Is Lil Wayne Poised To Reclaim His Hottest MCs In The Game Crown?

Cash Money artist Jay Sean says 2007 champ Weezy is 'still very hungry.'

Lil Wayne became MTV's very first Hottest MC in the Game back in 2007. Weezy — with no album, a million mixtape tracks and guest appearances and a palpable buzz as big as the Louisiana Superdome — dominated the list, beating out T.I. and the Game for top spot.

Wayne's rhymes were out of control and his impact was downright brutal, transcending the hip-hop genre. Weezy had a moment where he was striking everyone with his music. That moment has lasted more than two years now. And as we move into the 2009 Hottest MCs in the Game list, Wayne — who placed third behind Kanye West and Jay-Z in 2008 — is aiming to get his crown back. (To see what it takes to make the list, check out our Hottest MCs criteria.)

"Cash Money is the hottest label right now, because those guys don't stop working," said Jay Sean, CMR's newest find. "Birdman and Lil Wayne are still very hungry. They're the only CEOs you'll see in the club with their artists. Wayne makes all these hits records, and his Young Money label is blowing up as well."

Weezy is putting together his entire package this year. To date, he's had the biggest first week of any artist, rap or otherwise, since Usher's 2004 Confessions LP. Weezy's Tha Carter III still has the numbers to beat, with it's sales of more than a million units the first week. Wayne also just broke the record take of any touring rap artist with $46 million earned during his I Am Music Tour and Young Money Presents: America's Most Wanted Music Festival this past year. Weezy has also spread the love, introducing the world to new superstar Drake.

Now, here come the question marks: Has continuing to do so many guest appearances watered down Wayne's rhymes? And will Wayne be hurt by pushing his new album, Rebirth, back so many times? Artists such as Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Eminem, Jadakiss and Fabolous have all had successful albums this year while Weezy's project has been delayed. Everything will come to light soon when the 2009 list of Hottest MCs is announced.

Who do you think is the Hottest MC in the Game? Don't forget to vote from now through September 21 to have your voice heard.

Exclusive: Lil Mama Realized Jay-Z 'Wasn't Feeling' Her VMA Stage Invasion

'After watching it from home ... I was like, 'Wow, Jay-Z wasn't feeling it,' ' the 'America's Best Dance Crew' judge says.

In the moment, Lil Mama thought she and Jay-Z were connecting after she crashed his performance of "Empire State of Mind" during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. However, when she saw the footage of her uninvited appearance online afterward, she realized the superstar wasn't too pleased by her stunt.

When the "Lip Gloss" rapper surprised Jay-Z by walking onstage, he remarked, "Oh, you T-Paining right now, huh," referring to the Auto-Tune singer's unplanned appearance onstage next to Hov at Hot 97's Summer Jam concert during "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)."

"I didn't know what Jay said," Lil Mama told MTV News. "I thought he was like, 'OK, enjoying the moment with me, interacting,' which was after I walked up. But after watching it from home, watching myself on the Internet, I'm bouncing and I'm coming up toward Jay-Z and he's backing up. And my emotions at the time was like a vibe, like, 'Yeah, New York.' I was definitely caught up in the moment. ... Now that I'm home, I was like, 'Wow, Jay-Z wasn't feeling it.' "

Lil Mama has been apologizing profusely ever since. She issued a statement on Monday, apologizing to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys and saying she never intended to offend either artist. She said she hopes to speak with both parties privately to resolve the matter if there was any misunderstanding.

The "America's Best Dance Crew" judge said her hometown pride just overcame her during the performance, and she thought she was honoring Jay-Z by jumping onstage next to him, not ruining his performance.

"I would never get up there and try to disrespect Jay-Z or take a moment that someone else created and try to live it," she explained. "I'm too original for that and I respect him too much for that.

"To Jay in particular, as a Brooklyn native — [which] I am also — in that moment it was nothing but respect and honor," she continued. "It was a joyous moment. Whenever we share happiness or a celebration takes place, usually it's graceful, it's never to disrespect. I never meant any harm. I was enjoying myself and I was enjoying his performance. I got love for him."

Taylor Swift Talks About Kanye West's 'Very Sincere' Apology For VMA Incident

'I'm just very thankful that everyone showed me so much love,' Swift says.

Not long after Kanye West apologized to Taylor Swift on Tuesday (September 15) for interrupting her acceptance speech at the Video Music Awards on Sunday night, she spoke with ABC Radio about their conversation.

"Kanye did call me and he was very sincere in his apology, and I accepted that apology," she said. When asked if the situation was now all right, she said, "Yeah.

"The support I got from other artists and from the fans, and so many people sticking up for me, that's what got me to the place where I could accept that apology," she continued. "And I'm just very thankful that everyone showed me so much love."

Earlier on Tuesday, Swift stopped by "The View," where she addressed the now-infamous incident. Echoing what she said to MTV News after the show, the 19-year-old told Barbara Walters and company that initially she was kind of more confused by it than anything else.

"Well, I think my overall thought process was something like, 'Wow, I can't believe I won, this is awesome, don't trip and fall, I'm gonna get to thank the fans, this is so cool,' " she recalled, narrating how her excitement quickly dwindled as she realized what West's actual intentions were. " 'Oh, Kanye West is here. Cool haircut. What are you doing there?' And then, 'Ouch.'  And then, 'I guess I'm not gonna get to thank the fans.' "

Swift described how she had to get over the shock quickly. "You know, I'm not gonna say that I wasn't rattled by it," she said. "But I had to perform live five minutes later, so I had to get myself back to the place where I could perform."

And the support she received backstage from fans and artists helped her get back to that place. "Well, there were a lot of people around that were just saying wonderful things and just having my back," she said. "I never imagined that there were so many people out there looking out for me. It was really wonderful to see people defending me, so I didn't have to."

At the time, West had yet to reach out to Swift, despite giving three public apologies and telling Jay Leno that he wanted to talk to her in person. But Swift did say that if he wanted to meet with her, she would. "I mean, he has not personally reached out to me or anything," she revealed. "But if he wanted to say 'hi,' [sure]."

Whitney Houston Tells Oprah Michael Jackson's Death Was 'Devastating'

The second portion of Whitney Houston's sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey aired on Tuesday (September 15) and, in addition to opening up more about her marriage to Bobby Brown and her issues with substance abuse, she also spoke candidly about how she reacted to the news of Michael Jackson's death.

"Devastating," Houston told Winfrey. "I have so many good memories of spending time with him. I've known his family for so many years that I thought, 'It can't be true.' "

Houston said that she was aware of his troubles over the years and even heard about his painkiller addiction at one point. "I knew he was on painkillers at one time ... I didn't know how far and how deep it was," she recalled.

She said that performing with him at his 30th-anniversary special in 2001 opened her eyes — she saw him as a "mirror" because he reflected her own problems with addictions. "I just remember doing the anniversary special and I remember looking at Michael and I remember looking at myself and I was getting scared looking at him," she said. "I was looking at myself. I don't want it to be like this. Mike and I were very close."

That concert was the last time that Houston remembers seeing him, but she does note that the pair stayed in touch over the years via the phone. "I think it was that time [that I saw him last], but I spoke to him during the trial a lot. He would speak to me on the phone, but he didn't want me to see him," she said. "[It] saddens me."

Panic! At The Disco Had Deja Vu Watching Taylor Swift/ Kanye West VMA Incident

Band was bum-rushed by stage-crasher when accepting award during 2006 VMAs.

On Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards, as Kanye West bum-rushed Taylor Swift's Best Female Video acceptance speech, there were millions of viewers who probably felt empathy for the country singer. But there were only a handful who could relate to her situation — and one of those was Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie.

See, back at the 2006 VMAs, Urie and his bandmates had to deal with a stage-rusher of their own: a fired up filmmaker named Sixx who crashed their Video of the Year acceptance speech, complained that MTV never gave him a show, and pimped a (now defunct) Web site before being escorted off stage by security.

So on Sunday night, while Urie watched the show from a New York hotel room, he felt pretty bad for her ... and he also felt something very similar to déjà vu.

"I watched the rerun [of the show] from our hotel room," he said. "I [started watching] like five minutes before that happened, and Taylor got that award, and then all of a sudden it was like, 'Wow! Déjà vu!' Like, 'Hey, I remember that happening to us in 2006!'

"I felt for her," he continued. "Yeah totally, I think everybody did. Like, man, I feel really bad. That kind of sucks."

But Urie was quick to point out that his situation was different than Swift's. After all, say what you will about the guy who stormed the stage when Panic won, he was polite about it.

"It is a different situation, because what happened to us was, we walked up, and were gonna grab the mic, and he just came up — Sixx was his name, I still remember his name — and he just came up, grabbed the microphone and plugged his stuff, and he wasn't rude to us at all," Urie laughed. "He was just like, 'Hey, give it up for these guys, they're dong a great job. Also, check out my Web site.' He just plugged his stuff. So it was totally a different situation, than, getting bashed for your video, saying somebody else should win.

"But, hey, at least [Kanye] apologized."

Fans React To Kanye West's Apology On 'Leno'

Though the rapper has a few supporters, most think his apologies lack sincerity and are just attempts at damage control.
By Jocelyn Vena

After issuing two apologies on his blog, Kanye West appeared on "The Jay Leno Show" for his third public offering of remorse to Taylor Swift for jumping onstage during Swift's Best Female Video acceptance speech at the VMAs.

West expressed his regret over the incident, citing the fact that he's still dealing with the "hurt" of losing his mother, Donda, who died in 2007 of complications resulting from plastic surgery, and offered to apologize to Swift in person. But many music fans are still not happy with West for his outburst at Sunday night's VMAs.

"Kanye, How could you be so heartless? I'm very disappointed in you!!" Simoneaird wrote, alluding to West's 2008 song.

West does have a few supporters here and there among the many commenters, like Nekel, who noted, "Everyone makes mistakes and no one can deny that. He is apologizing, isn't that a good thing or worth something anymore?"

But many fans think his apologies were just a form of damage control and were not sincere. "His apology still didn't seem genuine to me. It was better done than his first one, but still felt more like a hand caught in the cookie jar apology," StephenC wrote. "You know, where it's more of a sorry you got caught — 'cause it seems the punishment [and] chastising never seems to end — than a sorry for the act itself."

Herculean wrote, "This seems to be one of those instances when an adult says, 'You're only sorry because [you] got caught.' Would he have been this distraught without all the backlash? Doubt it ... Besides that his outburst messed up the Tracy Morgan and Eminem Skit that followed Taylor Swift's exit."

One commenter, George, seems to think that at this point, West is using the situation for attention and not really trying to make amends for his actions. "I am sick of seeing so-called 'stars' milking these situations for their own personal gain after the fact," he wrote. "Don't apologize for it, and just don't do it in the first place. That's it. No more self-indulgence. Deal with your issues in private and with friends and family. What an idiot."

Another fan decided that if someone else had won the award, West wouldn't have felt the need to jump onstage and rant. "Kanye can kiss my a**!!" LASAlvi09 wrote. "If it was Lady Gaga or Katy Perry, you know he wouldn't have done that, period !!!"

Meanwhile, Cheriss empathized with West for still being distraught over his mother's death but didn't feel his actions were justified. "I understand that his mothers death still hurts him and I feel kinda bad for him, but that's not an excuse," she wrote. " 'Ye, it's just not! I hope he will get it together and finds out what his real issue is cuz I don't like seeing people like this! So get it together!"

And there are many fans out there who think that this latest West tantrum is the straw that broke the camel's back. Brad wrote, "Sorry Kanye, but you're done. We've put up with your self-centered, egotistical, 'What planet are you from?' B.S. for long enough. This was your Michael Richards moment, you've jumped the shark, put a fork in you, you're done. Go home. Shut up. And keep thinking you're more than you are."

After three public apologies, Kanye West has personally apologized to Taylor Swift for disrupting her VMA win on Sunday Night. MTV News confirmed that Swift has accepted West's apology, which was made on Tuesday (September 15).

On "The View" earlier on Tuesday, Swift said West had yet to contact her personally to apologize, even though he blogged two apologies and made an additional one on Monday night during his appearance on "The Jay Leno Show." Apparently quite soon after her appearance, West called the VMA winner to apologize — and according to her reps, she has accepted his apology.

While on "The View," the 19-year-old said that if West wanted to meet to talk about the incident she would be open to the idea, which he mentioned during his "Leno" appearance. "I mean, he has not personally reached out to me or anything," she revealed. "But if he wanted to say 'Hi,' [sure]."

West had said that he was "rude" for interrupting her acceptance speech for Best Female Video. "It was just very rude, period," West said to Leno. "I'd like to apologize to her in person."

On Sunday night, Swift spoke to MTV News about what went through her mind when West took the mic out of her hands to proclaim his preference for Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" video.

"Well, you know, I was up there and I was standing there and I saw Kanye up on the stage," she explained. "I was really excited ... and I kind of wasn't excited anymore."

Whitney Houston remained candid in the second part of her interview with Oprah Winfrey on Tuesday (September 15), speaking out about her drug addictions, her divorce from Bobby Brown, her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and why she felt the desire once again to get back into the music industry.

Houston, who also performed during her appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," said that she needed to figure out what her next move would be after she left her husband. "I had to get to the point where I had to make the choice and that one day came and I left," she said, revealing that she told Bobby she was going out for sugar and "I never came back and I went to L.A. I made some moves and then I took [daughter Bobbi Kristina] with me to California."

She also revealed that she had been separated from Brown for some time before anyone knew that the two were divorcing. "I had left, but nobody really knew. [My daughter] saw enough — the spitting in the face was enough," she said. "I wasn't going to be in an unholy matrimony. I wanted it to stop at that point — the drugs and everything — and I wanted [the evil] out and I was praying hard and my mother stepped in and she said, 'Let it go.' You can't play [my mom] Cissy, and she said , 'I'm not giving you up.' "

Bobbi Kristina supported the decision to divorce and for her mother to get her life back on track. "I went to California — I got me a little home there in Laguna. I got with a counselor, my friend who just helps people," she recalled, adding that eventually her daughter found out about Brown's exploits online.

"She was like, 'Mom, this is dad?' And I was like, 'Yeah, OK [it is].' And she saw him [with the other women] and just crazy things. She said, 'No, divorce him. Just let him go.' She said, 'You don't deserve that and neither do I.' "

Houston shared that she quit using drugs, but that every day is a struggle. "I mean, don't think I don't have desires for it," she said. "There are times when it takes a minute to cleanse, get off me — I have to pray it away. I have a drink every now and then ... don't get me wrong — that was not an issue for me. Oprah, one day at a time. Right now, no [I don't want drugs]. If ever I get low, I get weak, I know where I can go. I know where I can run to. And I know that God loves me. He loves me. I love the spirit of God so much. I'm not trading that for nothing."

She also knew she'd never trade in her career. Even at her lowest, she always knew that she had it in her to keep going and make music again. "You know what for some reason, Oprah, I never got to that point — something always had a fight in me," she said. "I always had a fight in me."

The criticism of Kanye West has rained down since the rapper snatched the microphone from Taylor Swift at the VMAs on Sunday night and interrupted her acceptance speech for Best Female Video. From fellow musicians to fans and even Donald Trump, the stage bum-rush has been almost universally panned. And now, even President Barack Obama — whom West supported during last year's presidential election campaign — has reportedly weighed in.

While speaking to CNBC on Monday (September 14), Obama reportedly referred to West as a "jackass" in an off-the-record conversation, according to reports based on a tweet from ABC reporter Terry Moran that has since been deleted.

"Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential," Moran tweeted. While the Tweet was only up for a short time, Moran has more than a million followers, so it quickly bounced around the Internet and led to an ABC spokesperson sending an explanation to the political site Politico.com about what happened.

"In the process of reporting on remarks by President Obama that were made during a CNBC interview, ABC News employees prematurely tweeted a portion of those remarks that turned out to be from an off-the-record portion of the interview," explained the spokesperson. "This was done before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again." The White House reportedly had no comment on the incident.

West has posted two different apologies to Swift on his blog and continued his apology tour on Monday night when he appeared on Jay Leno's new talk show and said he was "ashamed" of his outburst. The rapper said he plans to take some time off away from the spotlight in light of the incident.
