After an hour-and-a-half delay, Michael Jackson's funeral got under way around 8:30 p.m. PT on Thursday (September 3) at Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California.

The Jackson family and close friends, who departed their Encino compound in a police-escorted caravan around 7:30 p.m. PT, arrived at Forest Lawn at about 8:10. Solo piano renditions of Michael's songs began to play as the family — including Michael's three children, his sisters Janet and La Toya, brothers Jermaine and Tito, mother Katherine and father Joe — took their seats.

Jackson's body was driven into Forest Lawn in a hearse shortly before 8:30 p.m. and arrived at the Great Mausoleum burial site minutes later. As soon as the hearse pulled up, the cemetery-provided camera feeds shut off, ending the public's up-close, audio-assisted view of the proceedings. Helicopter shots continued to provide somewhat grainy footage of the ceremony.

Celebrities in attendance included Macaulay Culkin, Mila Kunis, Stevie Wonder, ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley, Corey Feldman, Elizabeth Taylor, Barry Bonds, Chris Tucker, Gladys Knight and the Reverend Al Sharpton.

On either side of a flower-decorated dais set up in front of the approximately 200 seats stood two pictures of Jackson in a bright yellow shirt and thick gold belt. Helicopter cameras hovering overhead showed that Jackson's family placed his flower-covered casket in front of the audience. Without audio, however, it was impossible to discern exactly what was taking place at the service. But at least one attendee used the power of social networking to communicate details from Forest Lawn.

"I just spoke at the conclusion of tributes," Sharpton wrote on his Twitter account during the ceremony. "Gladys Knight sang her heart out. Now we prepare to lay him to rest."

CNN reported that Knight sang the Lord's Prayer, Presley was extremely emotional when the casket was brought in from the hearse, and Taylor's wheelchair had to be lifted up a series of steps after the various tributes when attendees entered the mausoleum.

The ceremony lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes and wrapped up at approximately 9:45. "Michael Jackson has been laid to rest," Sharpton tweeted around this time.

50 Cent Says Soulja Boy's Music Is Big At Eminem's House

'He continues to make hit records that work,' 50 says of Soulja, in Mixtape Daily.

Voice of the People: 50 Cent

Last month, 50 Cent and Soulja Boy excited some fans and confused others during a West Coast stop on Young Money Presents: The America's Most Wanted Music Festival. Fif stepped onstage in California and performed with his much younger club-floor-catering peer. Those in attendance seemed to love it, but on the Net there was speculation about how and why the collaboration came together.

Reader 4EvaShady commented, "Curtis Jackson, what the **** are you doing? Get the **** off that stage and ******* bust a rap with Dre and Eminem!"

Meanwhile LAsalvi09 was way more receptive to the team-up. "Hot performance. Good stuff," they wrote.

"All the haters need to fall back," Blacko wrote. "Y'all just being negative towards two artists that did a show together? WTF is wrong with that? People who were there enjoyed it. Leave it at that. Point blank."

A reader under the handle of FriscoKid commented, "Stop being stupid guys. Soulja wouldn't have brought 50 to the show if [50] was played out. Doesn't make sense. Soulja Boy wanted to give the tour a different look. I didn't hear anything about LeBron James being over for showing up for Young Jeezy? No chatter about Chris Brown showing up for Lil Wayne either. It's just a chance for both of them to upstage the headliners ... This may have been the best part of that night."

Well, 50 Cent told us last week exactly why he wanted to come onstage with Soulja Boy. The answer is ... well, the General doesn't have to answer to anyone. The truth is, 50 and Soulja are cool. Fif even admires the youngster for writing and producing a hit as huge as "Crank That" and said that Soulja's popularity even resonates in Eminem's crib.

That's right.

"I was at Em's house," 50 said recently. "He has a basketball court that doubles as [daughter] Hailie's dance studio. That dance studio has the hardwood floors. I watched the kids do the Soulja Boy dance to the song. They're into organized dancing. That was something they were into. They're a world way from where Soulja Boy comes from. But it's translating and it's actually a hit record and he continues to make hit records that work."

So Fif says kick off his homie's back and let the teenager do his thing.

Mary J. Blige Joins Buckshot And KRS-One On 'The Way I Live'

'She's 'hood, she's elegant, she's real,' Buck says of Blige -- listen to the full song here!

Former Black Moon frontman Buckshot said getting Mary J. Blige on his new single wasn't about money — it was about friendship. Buck and the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul go back to the '90s, when Buck's artists and Boot Camp Clik members Smif-N-Wessun rapped on the remix to MJB's "I Love You." The two have been cool ever since.

"One of the last times I saw her before this song was in front of Sony studios," Buck remembered. "Me and Mary played a game of basketball right in front of Sony studios. You know how you would be in front of your building and you would use the wall as a hoop? So me and Mary was literally on the sidewalk just playing ball, bugging out. Mary, she really is Mary J. Blige. She's 'hood, she's elegant, she's real."

Buck also developed a great relationship with Blige's husband/manger Kendu over the years, so when he and KRS-One were coming up with the first single from their dual LP Survival Skills, they decided to call on old friends.

"The song is called 'The Way I Live,' " Buck said. "In the chorus, Mary says, 'I'm in the grind every day and that's the way I live.' When she started to sing that chorus, it's like, OK, [the song] became that much brighter. KRS-One said in the song, 'When you lose your job, you find your work.' A job is a job, when you lose it, you feel your work and your worth. The song is about being on the grind, but not accepting the grind — changing the grind.

"Everybody's got a song: 'I'm out there hustling, putting in work,' " Buck added. "But everybody does the same thing. What make this song different ... we're not talking about trapping and hustling. We say we go to the depths of who we are to find our true hustle. And that's why I love Mary J. When she started to go in on the end of the song, she has a name we call her: MC Brook. So we was like, 'Brook is about to go in.' She loves rhyming. Mary loves to flow and she's nasty. That's basically what the song is about — reaching within the depths of yourself to find a grind you created."

Survival Skills is due in stores September 15. Buck says he and KRS have known each other for over 15 years and decided to make an album together for the love of the sport.

"Kris has got this hunger that's impeccable," Buck said. "He's like a 16-year-old kid. You gotta be there to watch somebody who really loves to construct, build a house. You get to see the bedroom, the bathroom — you get a whole love for it because you see it constructed right before your eyes."

Death Cab For Cutie Talk Edward Vs. Jacob On 'New Moon' Video Set

'Meet Me on the Equinox' band was invited to screen a five-hour-long cut of 'Twilight' sequel.

By their own admission, only one-fourth of Death Cab for Cutie have actually read anything from the "Twilight" series (guitarist Chris Walla, we're looking at you), but that hasn't stopped them from penning the first single from the upcoming "New Moon" soundtrack, "Meet Me on the Equinox."

And that hasn't stopped them from weighing in on one of the series' central conflicts — the whole Team Edward vs. Team Jacob thing — when we visited the set of the "Equinox" video in Toronto on Wednesday.

"OK, so again, having only finished the second book, I feel like I'm sort of out on a limb a little bit, because I haven't started the third book," Walla told MTV News. "So I'm really excited to see the film and sort of see if I feel like I'm still out on a limb. Like, I love Jacob. He's great. In the middle of the book, he's the one who's taking care of Bella, and, like, where's Edward? What is he doing? What an a--hole! But he comes through in the end, and, you know, we'll see what happens."

So there you go: Chris Walla thinks Edward Cullen is an a--hole. And that wasn't the only revelation Walla had for us on the "Equinox" set. Apparently, there currently exists a five-hour version of the "New Moon" film — and, no, he hasn't seen it either.

"We were invited to see a cut that was five hours long. It didn't have any effects or Foley or music or anything in it. And we couldn't make the schedule work, because it was five hours long," Walla laughed. "We haven't seen anything more than anyone else has seen. We've seen the trailer, and that's really about it. ... I think the trailer looks great. There was the one scene where Jacob explodes into the werewolf, and it's like, 'How are they gonna pull that off? What are they gonna do?' And it looks great. So I feel like the whole thing is really going to work."

And while we'll have more information about the "Equinox" song — which premieres September 13 on MTV.com — and video in the coming days (trust us, it looks great), there's still one more bit of information we'd like to leave you with: Walla wants you to know that he's planning to finish the "Twilight" series very shortly. So if you run into him on the street, don't reveal how the whole Jacob/Edward thing plays out, OK?

"I'm a big fan of everything I've read so far. I've read both the first books, and it's kind of perfect for me, because I stopped after 'New Moon,' and I'm waiting to pick up on the next book," he said. "As this thing kinda gets going, I think I'm actually gonna dive into the third book. I really can't wait to see how it all ends up."

Oprah Responds To Chris Brown's Comment About Domestic-Abuse Episode

In People interview, Brown calls 'Oprah Winfrey Show' episode 'a slap in my face.'

In the forthcoming issue of People magazine, Chris Brown talks about his life since the February altercation with then-girlfriend Rihanna. The issues the pop star discussed included his feelings for Rihanna, his brief reconciliation with her after the incident and how he doesn't think he'll hit a woman again.

But Brown also addressed a domestic-abuse-focused episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that aired just after the assault, saying he thinks the show could have portrayed him in a better light. "I commend Oprah on being like, 'This is a problem,' but it was a slap in my face," Brown told the magazine. "I did a lot of stuff for her, like going to Africa and performing for her school. She could have been more helpful, like, 'OK, I'm going to help both of these people out.' "

In a statement released to TMZ on Thursday (September 3), Oprah responded to Brown's sentiments about the show. "Oprah is very appreciative that Chris Brown performed at her school, but she takes domestic abuse very seriously," the statement reads. "She hopes he gets the counseling he needs."

In the People interview, Brown said he is meeting with a counselor. "If I do [have an anger problem], I will work with my counselor and hopefully channel my anger into something like dancing," he said. "I'm going to counseling. I want to understand my feelings. I don't think that I'd get that mad again. [I'd] walk away. This has matured me."

As for his place now as a role model to his fans, he knows it's going to take time to prove himself again. "Musically, I can still inspire," he said. "But I have a bigger responsibility to show the world I can overcome this, be a better person, and that I'm worthy of being a role model. I'm going to earn that status back."

Tony Yayo Picks His Hottest MCs -- And Throws His Name In The Ring

'It's the biggest thing for me that y'all even mention my name, man,' the G-Unit rapper says.
By Shaheem Reid

Does Tony Yayo belong on the Hottest MCs in the Game list? The G-Unit soldier has certainly been keeping his name out in the streets. The Southside Queens native has dropped two Swine Flu mixtapes, the Public Enemies CD and, his latest tape, Gangsta Paradise. The Talk of New York is heating up.

"I'm going hard. I'm glad my name is being talked about," Yayo told MTV News of the Hottest debate. (To see what it takes to make the list, check out our Hottest MCs criteria.) "Opinions are like a--holes. Everybody has one. All the rappers out there, don't get emotional [about the Hottest MCs list]. It's people's opinions, man.

"It's the biggest thing for me that y'all even mention my name, man," Yayo continued, talking directly to some of the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust members. "[The G-Unit] T.O.S. album, I went hard. All my mixtapes went hard. But I think y'all need to throw some DJs on that panel. Whatever DJs is brave enough to do it."

Talking to DJ Drama, who was standing next to him, Yayo began to run down his list for the Hottest MCs in the Game — no particular order, of course.

"I would definitely throw 50 [Cent] and [Lloyd] Banks on there," Yayo said. "50 is an animal, and he makes hits. Banks is an animal. I would throw myself on there. You would have to throw Drake on there. Throw Tip [T.I.] on there. Wayne. Kanye, of course. You have to throw him on there. Jada, Fab, Gucci, Jeezy — it's a lot of MCs out there doing their thing."

Who do you think is the Hottest MC in the Game? Don't forget to vote from now through September 21 to have your voice heard.

Hours before Michael Jackson was to be laid to rest on Thursday evening (September 3) at Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, family members and close friends began to gather at the Jackson home in Encino.

Closer to the scheduled 7 p.m. PT start of the service, friends also began to arrive at the site, according to CNN, including Macaulay Culkin, Mila Kunis, Stevie Wonder, Lisa Marie Presley, Corey Feldman, Elizabeth Taylor and Al Sharpton in a white Rolls-Royce. TMZ reported that Barry Bonds and Chris Tucker were also in attendance and that Motown legend Gladys Knight would sing during the ceremony.

The Jackson family, however, did not leave for Forest Lawn until after 7:30 p.m., and the service had not begun as of press time.

On CNN, a live helicopter shot and cemetery-provided camera feeds set up on the ground showed the area in which the ceremony was set to take place. About 20 rows of white chairs had been set up, separated by a wide aisle, approximately 200 seats in total. Flowers and columns had been arranged on a dais in front of the chairs. The service was to take place next to the Great Mausoleum, where Jackson would be buried.

Outside the Encino compound, news media lined the streets hours in advance of the funeral. Private security guards and local police were posted in front of the house. The gate opened frequently to allow automobiles in and out, at least one accompanied by a police escort on a motorcycle. Dogs could be seen running around inside. Parking seemed to become an issue within the compound, as cars often had to pull out, back in and otherwise negotiate what appeared to be a tightening parking area. Michael's father Joe emerged after 5:30 p.m. PT to confer with security guards.

According to TMZ, five Rolls-Royce Phantoms were scheduled to transport the family to Forest Lawn less than 20 miles away. Joe and Jackson's mother Katherine were said to be set to ride in the lead vehicle.

TV crews converged on Forest Lawn as well, where security guards, undercover officers, dogs and helicopters patrolled the area. According to news reports, parking restrictions had been imposed on nearby streets and the Jackson family had obtained permits to control the grounds surrounding Forest Lawn. The Jackson family will reportedly reimburse the local police department for its security expenses, estimated to be as much as $150,000.

Michael Jackson Funeral To Take Place Tonight

Posted: 03 Sep 2009 06:40 AM PDT

After several delays, Jackson will be buried in a private ceremony at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
By Gil Kaufman

The Jackson family escorts Michael Jackson's casket out of the Staples Center in Los Angeles on July 7, 2009

More than two months after Michael Jackson's death, the singer will finally be buried on Thursday (September 3) at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California. But unlike the star-studded public memorial held in July, the final goodbye to the 50-year-old pop icon will be a private affair for friends and family only.

Jackson will be interred in the Great Mausoleum on the grounds of Forest Lawn, the final resting place for a number of Hollywood legends, including George Burns, Clark Gable, Nat King Cole, John Wayne and Walt Disney. Police promise a heavy presence during the event — including canine units and air support — and have encouraged gawkers to stay away. CNN reported that Gladys Knight, a longtime friend of Jackson's, will perform an undisclosed song at the service. No media will be allowed at the funeral and the family has not announced anything about the program.

In addition to replicas of Michelangelo's "David" and "Moses" sculptures, the mausoleum where Jackson will be buried features an ornate stained glass rendition of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper," making it a fitting resting place for the singer, who once commissioned for his bedroom a "Last Supper" portrait in which he appeared as Jesus among disciples that include Charlie Chaplin, Albert Einstein, John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Elvis and Walt Disney. The huge mausoleum is normally open to tourists but was closed on Wednesday in preparation for the funeral.

It is unclear where the golden casket that took center stage at the July celebration at the Staples Center in Los Angeles has been since that event, though it is rumored that it has been kept in the Forest Lawn crypt of Motown founder Berry Gordy.

As with most things relating to the singer, there has been controversy around the funeral, with some balking at initial reports that the city would pick up the costs of security for Thursday's event. A Glendale police official told the Los Angeles Times that the funeral could cost upwards of $150,000, but unlike the $1.4 million it cost the city of Los Angeles to provide security and traffic services for the Staples Center event, the Jackson family has said that the late singer's estate would pick up the tab for the funeral.

Another controversial aspect of the funeral centered on the reported divide in the family over where Jackson should be buried. Brother Jermaine Jackson has said he wanted to see Michael buried at the singer's Neverland Valley Ranch estate, a home Jackson vowed never to return to after a raid on the compound led to charges of child molestation for which Jackson was acquitted in 2005. Neighbors of the rural Santa Barbara County, California, ranch had balked at the idea and feared a potential onslaught of fan traffic to their bucolic neighborhood. Other members of the family also rejected the idea because of Jackson's expressed desire not to live there again.

Jackson, whose death is still under investigation by police, was originally set to be buried on what would have been his 51st birthday on August 29. But after those plans were announced by the late singer's father and later confirmed by his spokesperson, the funeral was pushed back without explanation.

Police have ruled Jackson's death a homicide, and the pop star's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, has reportedly become the focus of the criminal investigation. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office — which has concluded its investigation but withheld the final autopsy report in order to allow police to conclude their investigation — has determined the cause of death as "acute propofol intoxication," a reference to the surgical anesthetic Murray has reportedly told investigators he administered to Jackson several times in the hours before the singer's death on June 25. Murray has not been charged with any crime in the case.
