Red Hot Chili Peppers Feel The 'Love' On <i>I'm With You</i>

Chili Peppers reveal secret to their longevity — and their brand-new album — to MTV News.

You would think, given everything that went into the making of I'm With You, that perhaps the Red Hot Chili Peppers would be content to ride off into the sunset. After all, their place in rock history is more than secure, and, really, at this point, why would they endure another hiatus or departure from the fold?

Then again, if you really think that, then perhaps you don't know the Red Hot Chili Peppers. To them, calling it quits has never been an option, and, recharged by the addition of new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and their brand-new album, they're raring to go another 28 years.

"I feel as excited or more excited about this period — from the writing to the recording to the playing to the anticipation of going on tour — as I've ever felt about anything that we've done, from the beginning," RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis told MTV News. "Sitting here, doing these interviews, listening to Josh — I often just go into a daydream of playing these songs live. And it's the same feeling I got in 1983, when I couldn't sleep the night before a show, and if I did fall asleep, I'd have a surreal little dream about the show itself, and, you know, I still have that feeling about this record ... it's a good feeling."

And really, that feeling is the key. Because unlike the thousands of bands that have risen, peaked and crumbled during the Peppers' career, they've never faltered, even during their darkest hours (and there have been plenty of those). But ask them to explain their rather remarkable longevity, and they'll chalk it all up to one basic feeling: love. It's what's pushed them to remarkable heights and pulled them back from the brink more times than they'd care to count. And with I'm With You, that love remains stronger than ever.

"There's probably 1 billion keys, but love could be the strongest: love of what we do and each other," Kiedis explained. "And just being fortunate enough to create a band that survives this long kind of generates its own sustainability."

"And trusting yourself enough to be yourself and to take yourself as far as you can go," bassist Flea added. "Not ever trying to do any kind of art to fit in to anything else and just being yourself. We've gone out of being real cool, not real cool a bunch of times. So believing in that love: That's the key."

Demi Lovato Hopes To Inspire Others With Her 'Honest Journey'

Singer explains why she chose 'Skyscraper' as her first single instead of 'just another dance song.'

Demi Lovato proclaimed her inner strength on the emotional power ballad, "Skyscraper," the lead single off her album, Unbroken, which drops later this month. The track immediately connected with her fans, who have stuck by her side over the last year as she's battled personal issues.

Their support of the track, Lovato explained to MTV News last week, has given her newfound strength as she sets out to launch the next phase of her bustling music career. "When the song came out, it went #1 on iTunes instantly and it was so surprising to me," she said at a fan meet-and-greet in Los Angeles, where Lovatics lined up for blocks to meet Demi. "I wasn't expecting that at all. It's been such a whirlwind, and I've been so blessed and so thankful for it."

In "Skyscraper," Lovato confronts her issues — the ones for which she sought treatment last fall — because, she said, she wanted to keep her fans in the loop about her growth as a person.

"I've been pretty honest," she said. "My whole journey has been about telling my story and hoping that when I share my story, it inspires somebody. So, when I decided to come out with a single that was honest and about my journey and about standing strong and tall like a skyscraper, I hope that it inspired people.

"I thought that there was a bigger opportunity for me to come out with a song that would inspire people, rather than it be just another dance song on the radio," she added.

Sure, "Skyscraper" has a message, but there are also some fun tracks on the album, Demi promises, including her Missy Elliott/Timbaland collabo, "All Night Long."

"The song that Missy and I did together, Timbaland's actually on it, too, and it's fun," she said. "It's about staying up all night long and singing it to the boy that you like, and it's flirty and fun and it's not too grown-up, but it's grown-up enough."

'Apollo 18' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

We shed some light on the mysterious lunar adventure.
By Eric Ditzian

"Apollo 18"

Let's give the folks responsible for "Apollo 18" some credit: The viral marketing campaign behind their moon-landing horror flick has been convincing enough that NASA has had to come out and declare, " 'Apollo 18' is not a documentary. The film is a work of fiction."

We're not exactly convinced the American public was starting to believe Apollo 18 wasn't, in fact, a canceled moon mission but, as the film suggests, a cover-up to hide a gruesome lunar run-in with alien life forms. Nor are we certain a government statement will have any effect on conspiracy-minded kooks other than to make them think, "See, man, I told you — they're hiding something!"

"Apollo 18," for its part, certainly is hiding something. The Weinstein Company is following the "Paranormal Activity" playbook, doling out only pieces of information about the "found-footage" film and hoping moviegoers shell out cash this weekend to find out the full story. We've gathered all those pieces together so you'll know everything there is to know about "Apollo 18" before hitting the theater.

Word of the project first popped up last fall. "Wanted" director Timur Bekmambetov was spearheading the effort, a story that would take the existing urban legend about Apollo 18 and inject some alien scares into it. A press release declared that Bekmambetov had been hired to shoot a documentary about the Russian space station and came across never-before-seen footage of the space disaster in Russia's archives. Trevor Cawood, a visual-effects vet from the "Matrix" films, came onboard to direct, but he was quickly replaced by Spanish filmmaker Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego.

The new director, in turn, was soon joined by a teaser poster: an astronaut's boot print next to an alien creature's print and the tagline looming above: "There's a reason we've never gone back to the moon."

The trailer touched down on the Web in February. And we were immediately freaked out. What was up with the dusty, cracked space helmet? And that gnarly looking infection? And the zombie-looking dude?

Questions — many, many gross questions. But we started to piece some of them together. NASA and the Department of Defense sent two astronauts to the moon on a secret mission in 1972. They discovered some non-American footprints. Had the Russians been there too? Hmmm. One of the NASA astronauts was bitten by some kind of alien creature, leading to a psychotic breakdown. Damnnnnn. Thus began the cover-up. Or the conspiracy theories. Heck, even NASA might have seen something coming, as an agency-commissioned study, called the Brookings Report, seems to predict the "discovery of artifacts from alien life forms on the surfaces of the Moon, Mars or Venus." Spooky!

All shall be revealed Friday (September 2), when "Apollo 18" hit theaters. Before then, we've got one last piece of video to bring you — and freak you the eff out. It's got a terrified Russian astronaut, shaky footage of the lunar landscape and, well, we're not exactly sure what happens at the end. But we're pretty sure things didn't end well for the spaceman.

Check out everything we've got on "Apollo 18."

LMFAO Envisioned 'Party Rock Anthem' As Song Of The Summer

'It was a vision, a dream carried out,' RedFoo says of song's popularity.

It's been a good summer for party anthems thanks to jams from Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Pitbull, to name a few. But only LMFAO were committed enough to name their summer jam "Party Rock Anthem." The funky track launched onto the scene back in January, but really didn't pick up steam until the weather started to turn balmy, and now it's basically everywhere.

Written by LMFAO duo SkyBlu and RedFoo (along with Jamahl Listenbee, Peter Schroeder) and featuring production work from RedFoo and GoonRock (who is also on the track, along with British singer Lauren Bennett), the lead single off of Sorry For Party Rocking is a synthed-out ode to having a good time. Adding to its party credentials, the song samples Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" and Eric Prydz's "Call on Me."

As "Party Rock Anthem" faces off against the likes of "I Wanna Go" and "Edge of Glory" in our latest Song of the Summer poll, we wondered if LMFAO had any idea in the studio that the track would take off the way it has.

"Yeah, it was in the coordinates, so to speak, if you're gonna say 'take off,' " RedFoo told MTV News. "We knew that there would possibly be some turbulence; we rose above it. We elevated above it and navigated to that position. ... We had our sonar. It was a vision, a dream carried out."

Vote now in our Song of the Summer poll!

SkyBlu quipped, "Houston, we didn't have problem. We have success and nothing less than the best. Peace to the rest."

The VMA-nominated "Party Rock" video, which features some killer choreography and zombies, has also become a viral smash. SkyBlu guessed that "like 150 mil" had seen it.

"No, it's like 180 [million] or something crazy and I'm just guessing," RedFoo said, and he was pretty close to the over 184 million streams it had as of press time.

But the guys aren't resting on their laurels. They recently appeared in the video for Lil Jon's track "Drink," off his album Party Animal, and they just shot the video for "Sexy and I Know It" in Los Angeles. Keep on shuffling, boys!

Lil Wayne 'Never Had A Moment' Like Closing VMAs

When last year's Video Music Awards aired, Lil Wayne was in a Rikers Island jail cell serving out an eight-month bid. So when he agreed to participate in this year's VMAs, he knew it had to be big.

Not only did Weezy close out the awards show on Sunday night, he timed his Tha Carter IV for a midnight digital release, so fans could purchase the album shortly after watching him on TV.

"This was actually very important to me," Weezy F. told MTV News correspondent Jim Cantiello after closing the big show. "I've actually never had a moment like this."

Kicking off the performance with "How to Love," Wayne started out subdued. Dressed in a white tee, fedora and black-and-white cheetah-print pants, he crooned the words to the acoustic ballad. But by the end of the first verse, the Young Money CEO went into full-on rock mode, stripping his shirt and tossing his hat as he jammed out to a Black Sabbath-inspired rendition of his street single "John." Wayne even jumped into the crowd and greeted his friend and collaborator on the song, Rick Ross. After making his way back to the stage, the Rebirth rapper picked up a guitar and began to play a few notes before slamming it to the ground in true rock star fashion.

All in all, it seemed to be an enjoyable night for Weezy and his YMCMB family. After Nicki Minaj won Best Hip-Hop Video, Wayne, Birdman, Mack Maine and Tyga happily celebrated in the aisles of the Nokia Theatre.

"This is my first time, period, so I'm just ecstatic, I'm amazed," Wayne said about closing the VMAs. "I already have Moonmen at home, so I was good with that. Nicki Minaj got a Moonman, so that was awesome. I got to perform, Drake introduced me, it was great."

Tell us what you thought of Wayne's VMA performance in the comments below!

Drake Compares Rick Ross' Next LP To B.I.G., Snoop

Drake and Rick Ross play up each other's upcoming albums.

LOS ANGELES — Trying to determine something as subjective as what constitutes a hip-hop classic is an impossible task, but there are a few albums that are widely recognized crown-holders. Among them are the Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die and Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle, and it is in this same regard that Drake holds Rick Ross' upcoming fifth album.

"This guy right here," Drake said motioning to Ross as the two sat at Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV release party Sunday, "That God Forgives I Don't; the only way I can describe it is like Doggystyle or Ready to Die or Clipse Lord Willin' or any of the albums that I collected and held on to as a kid — whether it was cassette or CD."

Drake's measure may not be an objective one, but it isn't farfetched, considering that many have credited Ross with improving as an artist with each album he puts out. As of now, the album is still being recorded and only a select few have been able to hear it.

DJ Khaled also sang Rozay's praises when MTV News interviewed him back in July. "God Forgives I Don't is a classic-in-the-making. Let me tell you something right now: This album is so crazy from the beginning of what I've been in the studio hearing already," he said. "I can't give you too much because I'm going to let him do that, because that's his project, but I could tell you right now it's classic and he is talking that talk."

The Bawse isn't the only one with an album dropping soon. On October 24, Drake plans to release his sophomore LP, but the Bawse has already gotten a sneak peek. "I feel extremely grateful to hear a bulk of Take Care. Just to hear this man's tone of voice and the sh-- that he's saying is just so visual," Ross said. "And if you're a true Drake fan — if you love his first album, this one right here, this sh-- is uncut."

Just before last Sunday's VMAs, "Jersey Shore" viewers saw some drama go down in the house. Specifically, Ronnie and the Situation, who are supposed to be living abroad experiencing the best of Italian culture, got into a heated fight over Ron and Sammi's on-again, off-again relationship.

Check out how Snooki, JWoww and Deena channel their inner 'Housewives' in Italy!

The fight quickly escalated, and before long, the Sitch had slammed his own head into a wall and landed himself in the hospital. It was a decidedly real moment for MTV viewers, but the "Jersey Shore" cast said watching those events play out on the small screen left them with mixed emotions.

"At the time it was pretty serious; now it's hilarious to watch," Vinny admitted to MTV News on the VMA black carpet.

So, does the Situation feel the same way? "He thinks it's pretty funny too," Vinny told us. "They get over it pretty quickly; boys move on."

Pauly D and the Situation got, er, makeovers. Head over to MTV's Remote Control for a look!

For DJ Pauly D, who typically tries to steer clear of all the hoopla that goes down between his roommates, watching the fight again on TV was actually entertaining. "It's fun! I love watching it," he said. "You want to know what's crazy? ... I watch it, too, 'cause I like to stay away from the drama, so I like to watch the drama [on TV]."

The guys' pal Deena pointed out that the fighting and the drama is only one slice of life for the "Shore" crew. "It just brings back a lot of the feelings. The fight was insane and really made you realize even though we have ups and downs, we really care about one another," she said.

Don't miss "Jersey Shore" every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!

'X Factor' Will Be A Reality Show 'On Steroids'

Creative director of Simon Cowell's upcoming competition series tells MTV News it will be 'like the VMAs every week.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Fans have been wondering for months now what to expect when Simon Cowell's Stateside interpretation of "The X Factor" starts up on September 21. According to the Fox show's creative director, Brian Friedman, it's going to be ... big.

"Basically 'The X Factor' in the U.S. is every reality show you've [ever] seen on steroids," he told MTV News when we caught up with him on the 2011 VMA black carpet. "It is like the VMAs every week."

Friedman — a veteran choreographer who has worked with a number of pop stars, most notably Britney Spears — has a history with "The X Factor" franchise. He not only hosted the British version for some time, but he also served as its creative director. The Fox show will step up its game week after week to ensure that it's all about going big or going home, Friedman promised.

"The performances that we do on there are boundless; there are no boundaries," he continued. "We don't stand inside a box. There is no right or wrong. Every rule you could possibly break in TV, [we do]. So expect to be wowed every week."

Friedman joins host Steve Jones, as well as the judges: Cowell and his former "American Idol" co-star Paula Abdul, record executive L.A. Reid and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger

"American Idol" has always had scratch-your-head-type contestants, and earlier this year Cowell confessed that he hoped to keep that spirit alive on his new show.

"I love unusual people. I always say, you've got to embrace the madness," Cowell laughed. "I like that we're going to be very open-minded. I think we're going to have good enough people on this panel that we're not gonna miss out on anyone who's got potential."

Beyonce, Adele, Lil Wayne Get VMA Bump On iTunes

Beyoncé's surprise pregnancy reveal wasn't the only bump to show up this week. A number of artists also got an expected iTunes VMA bump, as their singles shot up the iTunes digital charts in the wake of their performances on the record-setting broadcast.

The biggest leap was made by Adele, whose second single, "Someone Like You," shot right up to #1 on the tally in the wake of her dramatic appearance on the broadcast, a rise of 441 percent. The song was not even in the top 10 when iTunes released the charts for the week ending August 22. Though iTunes does not release sales figures, there was clearly some serious online purchasing that went on, in addition to a major flood of Twitter traffic caused by the VMAs.

Among the other beneficiaries were Lady Gaga, whose Jo Calderone-fueled take on "Yoü and I" pushed that song back into the top 10 to #4 as of Thursday (September 1). And, after dropping Tha Carter IV at midnight on Sunday, Lil Wayne was all over, with "Mirror" moving into the #5 position, "Blunt Blowin' " at #13, "MegaMan" at #23 and "How to Love" at #15.

Beyoncé herself had a boost from the night, as her "Love on Top" performance pushed the not-officially-released-as-a-single single to #3 (currently at #9) as sales picked up by 221 percent. Pre-show performers Cobra Starship were feeling the love also, as "You Make Me Feel" moved up to #6 after having faded to #11 before the broadcast.

Also benefitting were rockers Young the Giant, whose performance likely helped breakthrough single, "My Body," shoot up 223 percent to land at #2 on the alternative singles charts and #24 on the overall chart. The band's self-titled disc also saw some serious love, with sales expanding by 220 percent, moving up to #4 on the iTunes album chart. House artist Jessie J got the bump as well, with sales of her album, Who You Are shooting up nearly 200 percent.

Chris Brown's high-flying VMA medley also pushed him up the charts, as his singles "Beautiful People" and "Yeah 3X" soared by 904 and 149 percent, respectively, on the iTunes singles chart.

The love was spread far and wide, as evidenced by the 1,375 percent jump for Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse's version of "Valerie" — performed by Bruno Mars during the Amy Winehouse tribute — and the Foo Fighters' VMA-winning "Walk," which had a 120 percent jump on the iTunes singles chart. Sales of Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends" were up 76 percent on the iTunes singles chart after the song was heard in the Britney tribute to the pop star and Pitbull's summer jam "Give Me Everything" surged 71 percent on the iTunes song tally following his performance.

Insane Clown Posse 'Hella Thankful' For Jack White Collabo

ICP team up with former White Stripes frontman to cover a Mozart canon — much to the consternation of White's fans.
By James Montgomery

It was the biggest (and decidedly WTF-est) news to hit in the post-"Beyoncé is preggers!" era: Jack White, revered retroist, songwriter and producer, had teamed up with the Insane Clown Posse, best known for wearing face paint and spraying Faygo everywhere, to cover a lesser-known Mozart canon, the title of which, literally, translates to "Lick me in the arse."

Yeah. In fact, the collaboration seemed so odd that most thought it was nothing more than an elaborate hoax. Only it wasn't — and the proof exists on White's Third Man Records' website, where the full version of "Lech Mich Im Arsch" can be heard in all its, uh, glory. And if this whole thing leaves you feeling a bit puzzled, well, you can imagine how ICP must be feeling right about now.

"He called us out of the blue and asked if we'd be down to come down to Nashville, to his studio, to do some work. And I think he knew, you know, he's one of the most respected musicians today, and we're one of the most non-respected musicians today, and I think he knew it would drop a lot of jaws and shock people," ICP's Violent J told MTV News on Thursday (September 1). "I asked him: 'Why us?' And he said he finds himself on the Internet, time and time again, looking at our stuff, and some of it he thinks is genius, other stuff he doesn't understand, but it always draws him back.

"He was really cool and, of course, we were really geeked. We were like, 'Hell yeah, we'll do a song with Jack White. That's awesome.' And we were hella thankful, but at the same time, we knew he was going to catch a lot of sh-- for it," J continued. "So we asked him why he'd be down, and he said that, out of everybody he's doing these 45s with, nobody has had the reaction that ICP has. When he tells his friends he wants to work with us, they stop what they're doing and say, 'What? Are you serious?' "

Indeed, White was serious. So in July, ICP headed down to Third Man Studios, still rather unsure of what exactly they'd be doing when they got there ("We talked on the phone a couple of times, but we didn't have a clue," J said). And even when White explained his plan, well, J and Shaggy were still sort of in the dark — mostly because neither are really down with Mozart's compositions, bawdy or otherwise.

"Nah, man, I'm not into Mozart. We don't know nothing about that sh--. And when we went into the studio, and he told us about the 'lick my ass' thing, we were like, 'OK, we get it.' A song called 'Lick My Ass,' put ICP on it. We like to think there's a little more method to our madness," J said. "But once he told us that Mozart had a fun side to him, and liked to f--- around with his friends and make funny songs and sh-- like that, we all jelled. And we went back to our hotel room that night, wrote the vocals for the song."

And, oh, those vocals. Most, of course, can't be published here, but suffice to say, they fall in line with the general, uh, theme of the song. In fact, they're definitely the raunchiest things to be associated with White and Third Man since, well, ever. That's probably why the collaboration (they recorded both "Arsch" and the B-side, "Mountain Girl," J's favorite, since "It's the more ICP of the two") has been greeted with such fervent acrimony from the music community. Well, at least part of the reason. Though, to hear J tell it, neither him nor White were particularly concerned with the public's opinion of the collaboration.

"People are so mad that we did this song with Jack White. They're mad at Jack White about it. We were reading sh-- in the studio yesterday. His whole fans are like, 'We lost respect [for him].' Just a--holes talking, but man, he's having fun," J said. "It's not like it's on his new album or anything. Like he said to me, he probably wondered what it was like with us in the studio, where we were coming up with these crazy rhymes. And we wondered what it was like to work with a guitar god, genius, to work with a genius like that in the studio. And we both fulfilled all our questions out of it. That's what we all got out of it."

And to that end, J said that he's pretty sure ICP's team-up with fellow Detroit native White would be a one-time-only affair — "When it was over, he was cool, man, but, we could tell it was time to go," he laughed — but it's definitely one he'll always remember. Of course, he's always open to another go-round — perhaps at next year's Gathering of the Juggalos?

"F--- yeah. We actually asked him this year! When we went out [to the studio], it was like a month before the Gathering. We were like, 'Hey, man, if you want to come watch the Gathering, we'd love to have you," J explained. "He laughed, said he makes sure to check out our infomercials every year, but he was just tied into the work. I don't think he wants to start a side-project with us, you know?"

Slaine Balances Rapping And Acting With Ben Affleck

'He just saw my face in the paper and he was casting,' the Boston MC tells Mixtape Daily of how he met Affleck.
By Rob Markman

Fire Starter: Slaine
Boston MC Slaine's first love is music, but after landing roles in the 2007 film "Gone Baby Gone" and last year's "The Town," his horizon has expanded a bit.

Born George Carroll, Slaine got his start alongside Boston rap legend Edo G. and fellow MC Jaysaun in the group Special Teamz, who released their debut album, Stereotypez, in 2007. From there, Slaine hooked up with another hip-hop luminary, Everlast from House of Pain. Together, Everlast, Slaine, Ill Bill, Danny Boy and DJ Lethal hooked up to form La Coka Nostra. As a rapper, Slaine made a name for himself in hip-hop's underground but wasn't a widely recognizable face — that is until actor/director Ben Affleck saw him in a local newspaper and expressed interest in casting the MC in his film "Gone Baby Gone."

"He had never heard my music. He just saw my face in the paper, and he was casting, I guess he thought I looked the part," Slaine said of how he hooked up with the Academy Award-winning Boston native. "My picture was in the Boston Herald talking about what I was doing with my music. I woke up one afternoon, and I had 66 missed phone calls. They called me in to do an audition — turned out I had to do five auditions."

Affleck had to fight with the producers to get the first-time actor the role of drug dealer Bubba Rogowski and then brought him back years later to play bank robber Albert Magloan in "The Town." Next up for the rapper/actor is "Cogan's Trade," a mob-inspired flick starring Brad Pitt and Ray Liotta.

Lately, Slaine has been working overtime with the music. This past summer, he released his State of Grace mixtape with DJ Statik Selektah and then quickly followed up with his latest album, A World With No Skies 2.0. "I'm at the same level, if not further along, with my film career than I am with my music career," Slaine said of the balance between his two arts. "I've had a long independent music career, but people almost know me more now for films. So it's hard, because it's not the same as a Ludacris or an Ice Cube, where they have that mega-success in music and then they can kinda just take time off and shoot movies.

"Music is something that's more therapeutic for me. I have to do it. I have to do it when I wake up in the morning, I have to write," he said. "Where acting hasn't been a part of my DNA from the beginning, it's something that I've added to my repertoire."

With the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind around the corner, today's biggest acts recall 1991's other classic albums.

In a few short weeks, Nirvana's epochal Nevermind album turns 20, a milestone that will be marked with much coverage, celebration and consternation in the media — and understandably so. After all, it was a game-changer in every sense of the term, the kind of album that brought about seismic shifts in music, fashion and culture in general, one that defined a generation and, as such, deserves to be mythologized. And, in the coming weeks, we suspect you'll see no shortage of stories that do just that.

While Nevermind casts an indelibly lengthy shadow, it bears mention that there were no shortage of other magical, massive and equally mythological albums that hit stores in 1991 — from mega-platinum rock blockbusters to best-kept indie secrets, and just about everything in between — classics that, had Nirvana never broken through, would probably be getting the royal treatment right now. In 1991, rock truly rocked, so, in celebration of that fact, we've asked some of today's biggest bands to discuss their favorite albums from that rather amazing year. On Wednesday, we heard from Death Cab for Cutie and Blink-182; now, Skrillex and Foster the People share their faves.

Don't worry, we'll give Nevermind its due — but right now, we're paying tribute to 1991's other indispensible albums, in the words of their biggest fans.

The one where "old" Metallica ended and "new" Metallica began — at least according to the die-hards — the band's fifth studio album (it's technically self-titled, though, come on, who doesn't call it The Black Album?) saw them drifting away from their slash-and-burn thrash-metal past into a new, decidedly fuller phase, one fleshed out with orchestral flourishes and an increased focus on the booming rhythm section of Jason Newstead and Lars Ulrich. Though its recording was plagued by battles with producer Bob Rock, The Black Album features the band's most iconic songs — "Enter Sandman," "The Unforgiven," "Nothing Else Matters," etc. — and remains their best-selling to date, moving a staggering 22 million copies worldwide. Love it or hate it, you can't deny its impact, both on the band and the next two decades of hard rock.

As Remembered by Skrillex: "Man, The Black Album was me sitting in my room when I was 9 years old, trying to learn all the songs on guitar. That was, for me, rocking out, no reservations, like I was on the stage. And learning the 'Holier Than Thou' riff was, like, the biggest achievement, because it's so hard. Every record on that album is so amazing. ... Obviously, 'Enter Sandman,' 'Wherever I May Roam' ... that was the first Metallica song I learned, after 'Enter Sandman.' I love The Black Album. It's perfect; it's a masterpiece in every way, from front to back, and it's inspired me, consciously or subconsciously, because I had such a connection to it."

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik
One of the most important, celebrated albums of the '90s alt-rock explosion, Blood Sugar saw the Chili Peppers grow up, get deep and, of course, become hugely famous. While songs like "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss" still bobbed and weaved with the band's visceral energy, it was on tracks like the massive "Under the Bridge" and "Breaking the Girl" where they slowed things down and found their biggest commercial successes. Recorded by producer Rick Rubin in a supposedly haunted mansion in Laurel Canyon, its creation has become the stuff of rock legend, and though the Peppers would subsequently sag beneath its success (guitarist John Frusciante, unable to cope with his sudden fame, quit the band mid-tour), Blood Sugar still stands as perhaps the finest accomplishment of their 28-year career. It would be nearly four years before they released a follow-up, though, given the album's hugely influential status, you really couldn't blame them.

As Remembered by Mark Pontius, Foster the People: "My favorite record of 1991, and I think the only reason I got this record was my sister had it, and she's older than me, so it just sort of fell into my lap, is Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I think I have to credit that record [for teaching me] a lot of my drumming skills. I loved playing their records, and that one always stuck out to me. It had so much grit, and that was rock and roll at that time of my life."

Machine Gun Kelly Shoots His First Bad Boy Video

'I never been on a real video set,' MGK admits to MTV News.

Bigger deals mean bigger budgets. While on the come-up, Cleveland, Ohio's Machine Gun Kelly made the most of his independent music grind, but his new deal with Diddy's Bad Boy Records has allowed the rapid-fire rapper to do things slightly bigger.

"This is the first video we're doing with Bad Boy/Interscope," MGK told MTV News on Monday while on the set of the Colin Tilley-directed clip for his mixtape cut "Stereo."

"Man, our videos? C'mon man, they're like all directed by us; like jokes, then we turn it and flip it and make it great," he said of his past vids like "Cleveland" and "Salute."

For "Stereo," Kells invaded Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility in Whittier, California. "We shut the whole thing down, moved all the prisoners in one room ... it's pretty crazy," he joked. "It's just a bunch of just badass girls, and we're all just getting shipped to the correctional facility and we're just having a bad time. It's like the music comes on and it kinda cheers us up, kinda just excited and ready to do whatever."

In August, Diddy announced that he signed MGK on "RapFix Live," and while Kelly doesn't exactly fit the Bad Boy rapper mold set by the likes of the Notorious B.I.G., Mase and the LOX, Combs insisted that he doesn't want the youngster to change a thing. "He will not be changing for Bad Boy; he will not have a typical Bad Boy swag," Diddy said. "He's not going to be popping champagne or driving around in Bentleys. He's gonna be him and true to himself. He has a lot of creative control in his project."

After breaking through with his 2010 mixtape Lace Up, MGK caught hip-hop's attention. His popularity began to grow so much that the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers began to play his hometown ode "Cleveland" at home games during the 2010-2011 basketball season. On the upbeat "Stereo," MGK raps metaphorically about his love affair with music and his stereo.

For Kells, turning his underground fan-favorite into his first big visual means the world to him. "We're just about being organic and keeping everything how it was before the deal, so we're taking one of the older songs that the fans love," he said. "I never been on a real video set. I'm so happy I'm from Cleveland, Ohio, dude. This whole experience is just crazy."

New York City welcomed newlyweds Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries with open arms on Wednesday night. The pair attended a bash thrown in their honor and held at downtown Manhattan's Capitale, officially welcoming the couple as the latest members of the city's upper echelon.

The party had a black-and-white theme, like the pair's nuptials late last month, and was dubbed the "Night of Style and Glamour" soiree, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The pair's family, fellow celebrities, socialites and reality stars, including Lance Bass, Paul Shaffer, Tinsley Mortimer, and "Real Housewives of New York" stars Ramona Singer, Alex McCord, and Simon Van Kempen, were all in attendance, and Colin Cowie hosted the event.

"Welcome to New York!!!! @ KrisHumphries @ ScottDisick @ KourtneyKardash @ JonathanCheban @ scottsartiano @ CarlaDiBello @ lala! What a fun nite!" Kim tweeted about the bash. "Such a glam night NYC! Thanks for the warm welcome! Thanks again @ JasonBinn @ ColinCowie!!! Now I get to sleep in! I need some major rest!"

The glamorous event featured a violinist dressed in lingerie playing alongside a DJ. When the couple walked into the party, the DJ played Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind." They later cut into a cake emblazoned with "Welcome to NYC Kim & Kris."

A two-part TV special, "Kim's Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event," is slated to air in October on E! Cameras were rolling at the party, presumably to be included in the special. Humphries plays for the New Jersey Nets, while Kim, along with her sister Kourtney, is back in NYC to shoot the new season of "Kourtney & Kim Take New York."

Linkin Park's Chester Bennington Talks Earthquake Relief Show

Linkin Park got together with 1,100 of their biggest fans on Wednesday night to play a very special show. Normally used to rocking tens of thousands, the group squeezed into the very intimate Mayan Theater in Los Angeles for a benefit for Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief that was fueled by their followers' energetic fundraising efforts.

"It's a really exciting night tonight. We're performing a show with he B'z from Japan, [the] biggest rock band in Japanese history," explained singer Chester Bennington before the gig. "It's an honor to be able to play with these guys, and it's especially an honor to be able to give back to the Japanese community that's been so devastated and been so great in supporting us."

The show was populated by fans who met the group's challenge to each raise $500 or more for Japanese tsunami relief in order to earn a pair of tickets. It was a continuation of LP's Music for Relief charity, which was started in the wake of the 2005 Indian Ocean tsunami, which has subsequently raised funds for victims of other natural disasters, including the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

"We wanted to do something where we kind of engaged our fans to give money, because we're always asking them to give money all the time because unfortunately, there are natural disasters affecting so many places all over the earth that we're always asking our fans for money," explained Bennington of the group's ongoing fundraising efforts. "We wanted to do something that was exciting for our fans and gave them something to look forward to, a goal that was beyond anything they'd done before."

One initial idea had LP donating all the money from a show in Japan to relief efforts. But that felt like the obvious thing to do, so instead they came up with the notion of a secret show that would engage fans by having them "earn" the tickets.

"We set a goal that we thought was pretty high, at $250,000, and amazingly our fans — from both Linkin Park and B'z — have generated over $350,000 in 60 days," he said. "Which is unbelievable considering not only the devastation in Japan but also the economic struggles people are having here in the U.S. as well." In fact, he said proudly, the top fundraiser brought in more than $13,000.

Just after news hit that Justin Bieber had been involved in a minor car accident, the teen pop star, his manager and his producer began releasing details about his forthcoming Christmas album, including a possible Taylor Swift collaboration.

In a Twitter conversation with his manager, Scooter Braun, the pair revealed more info about the album, even sharing that it won't contain the holiday standards fans might expect. "This Christmas album is amazing. Might be the best album yet," Scooter Braun wrote on the social networking site. "All originals ... soon 2 b classics. every1 i play it 4 is blown away. #excited."

The 17-year-old superstar then shared, "@scooterbraun yeah we are going hard for Christmas!! #mistletoe." He later revealed that he had been recording tracks with some of his pals. "Had a great studio session with my big bro @seankingston and the talented @jonathanrotem #GOODMUSIC."

Producer Kuk Harrell (Rihanna, Katy Perry) has also been tweeting about hitting the studio with the singer and revealed another collaboration. "Wow!! Got to see @justinbieber & @taylorswift13 write a song together last night!!" he shared last week. "SMASH!!!! SMASH!!! SMASH!!! Let's do it again y'all!!!" Bieber hit the stage with Swift during one of her shows in Los Angeles last week.

Perhaps as a hint of what is to come, Bieber also retweeted a message from Braun in which Braun said, "Goin 2 bed listening 2 this new xmas album bieber is coming with. really #classic. original xmas tunes that r legit hit records. #greatmusic."

Bieber has been working hard on new music, both holiday-themed and other. When MTV News caught up with him earlier this summer, he wanted his fans to know that anything is possible on his next album. "[I'm] writing about how I feel and producing. I've been producing on my laptop and on my computer," he said. "I've been really into it and, hopefully, this next album will be huge."

He added, "I've done a lot on my acoustic guitar, so it's gonna have that vibe," he explained. "I'm not gonna really limit myself. I think music is music, and genre — I mean, I know there's country music, there's rock music, but my music is different. My voice is not meant for any style. I just want to make music."

Marc Anthony Says J.Lo Divorce Isn't 'Shocking'

'It wasn't something sensationalistic happening,' Anthony tells 'Nightline.'

While the couple appeared to be happily married and had plans for a joint reality show, clothing line and other business ventures, Marc Anthony said there's nothing shocking about the fact that he and soon-to-be-ex wife Jennifer Lopez are getting a divorce.

The Latin singer sat down with ABC's "Nightline" for an interview that will air Thursday night (September 1), in which he said that he was not surprised when Lopez, his wife of seven years, filed for divorce on July 15.

"I'll tell you that it wasn't something sensationalistic happening," Anthony said of their split. "It was a realization on both our parts. So, you know, it wasn't shocking. These things happen. It was a decision that we made jointly."

Anthony said the bottom line was that the marriage just no longer "worked," but despite the split, he will always have feelings for Lopez, with whom he has 3-year-old twins Max and Emme.

"I'll always love Jennifer," he said. "She knows that ... my kids know that. Jennifer's a wonderful, wonderful woman, a wonderful mother, a wonderful friend."

He also denied rumors that he was unfaithful during his marriage, but did not address recent reports about an alleged close relationship with married "HawthoRNe" star Jada Pinkett Smith that set off whispers about alleged trouble in her marriage to Will Smith. Since the split, he said he's been taking long motorcycle rides and spending time at his Long Island home, which he refers to as "Casa Marc Anthony."

"It is sad, because you think about the impact of all those people who believe in you," he said. "You think about your family and the possibilities, but we realized very early on that even though we're not together, our story's not over. There are things to do together; there is life to see together through Max and Emme. So it's all good, man."

The couple still apparently plans to work together on their Latin talent-search show "¡Q'Viva! The Chosen."

"This is not a funeral. This is not a burial," Anthony said. "This is just two people who came together and just realized ... I'm saying that it wasn't sustainable the way it was, and that's that."
