Drake Wishes Justin Bieber Kept 'Trust Issues' Unedited

LOS ANGELES — When Justin Bieber dropped his remix of Drake's "Trust Issues" over the weekend, many wondered whether the 17-year-old pop star would keep the lyrics intact and throw out F-bombs and the track's other profanities. The baby-faced singer most certainly did not, trading Drake's "F--- it, I'm on one" line for "You know I'm on one."

"I wish he would've left all the cuss words in it. I feel like that would've been so G, if he would've done all the swearing," Drake told MTV News from Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV release party on Sunday. "I was excited when I heard he remixed it, because there was like a gang of swearing in that song. I was like, 'Oh, we're about to hear the transformation of Bieber.' "

Despite its sweet and serene melody, the lyrics to Drizzy's "Trust Issues" are quite filthy at times. As the YMCMB solider sings about contempt for manipulative woman, he belts out, "You know what I'm sippin'/ I teach you how to mix it/ But you're the only one, 'cause I don't trust these bitches."

On his version, Bieber doesn't condone drinking nor does he refer to the song's subjects as bitches. Instead, the Biebs tweaks the line and sings, "You just need to listen/ Teach you how to fix it/ 'Cause you're the only one, because I don't trust these women."

JB, however, did keep Drake's dirty original rap verse on his version of the song.

All in all, Drake was pretty excited about the remake. "He's like a talented kid ... from Canada, so to hear him even remix that song is crazy," he said. "That's incredible."

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' I'm With You is the kind of album that comes with plenty of good stories — everything from the lengthy hiatus that preceded it to the departure of stalwart guitarist John Frusciante and the rejuvenation that came with the addition of new ax-man Josh Klinghoffer. Shoot, even first single "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" and I'm With You's title come with rather sizeable preambles.

But on an album brimming with backstories, none is as poignant as the tale attached to "Brendan's Death Song," an ode to the Chili Peppers' longtime friend (and L.A. legend) Brendan Mullen, who not only gave the band their first break, but co-wrote the book that documented their first 25 years. And, when he died in 2009 at the age of 60, his passing was symbolic, in more ways than you might think.

"He died [close to] his birthday, which was also the rebirth day of the Red Hot Chili Peppers," Anthony Kiedis told MTV News. "It was the very first day that we got together to play with Josh. And so all of those confluencing things led to that song being written on the first song of the Josh era."

While "Death Song" is certainly a somber affair, it is also a celebration of Mullen's life and the beliefs he held dear to his heart. That's why, even though it was written very early in the process, the Peppers knew it was a lock for I'm With You all along.

"He was a true pioneer in the avant-punk rock-music scene of Hollywood in the late '70s, for the purest and most beautiful of reasons. His job was to create a place and space for a new music to exist and a new scene to exist, and he did that by starting a club called the Masque, a basement club on Hollywood Boulevard," Kiedis explained. "He lit the match. And then he never lost that love and that enthusiasm for art and music and literature and people and kind of an underground scene; he kept that alive in his heart until the day he died.

"He ended up booking Club Lingerie shows through the '80s, which was just the place to get a show if you were an L.A. band or a New York band or a D.C. band, and Flea and I made our first demo tape for a few hundred bucks, with Spit Stix as the engineer, the drummer of Fear, and it was really good and we loved it and believed in it, and we took it everywhere and tried to play it for people, and most of the times they wouldn't listen," he continued. "And we took it to Brendan in the middle of the day and knocked on his door and said, 'Will you listen to this?' [We] put it in the boom box and danced our merry dance for Brendan, and he said, 'Next Thursday, you're opening for Bad Brains.' "

So, like much of I'm With You, "Brendan's Death Song" is very much about life and loss ... but, at the same time, it remains a tribute to the undying spirit and ethos of both the man and the band.

"There are people like that. You know it when you meet them and hang out with them; their integrity is real," Kiedis said. "And I'm so happy that song came around. It seemed preordained for it to fall into our laps on that day."

LOS ANGELES — It's finally here, but the road to Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV was no cakewalk. It's been a long journey, and according to Young Money President Mack Maine, Weezy F. conceptualized C4 in three stages: pre-prison, in-prison and post-prison.

"He did the 'Blunt Blowin' joint as soon as he got out. He actually wrote that one while he was in Rikers," Mack Maine told MTV News of the second track on Tha Carter IV. "But he also did 'So Special' and he did 'She Will' when he came home, which the ladies are gonna love. So that was kinda like the difference."

The first mentions of the LP came nearly three years ago in September 2008 when it was said that Wayne began recording the album. Instead of following up on his Carter series right after the third installment, Weezy switched gears and dropped his We Are Young Money label compilation album in December 2009 and then his rocked-out Rebirth LP and I Am Not a Human being in 2010 while he was serving an eight-month prison bid.

Wayne was released in November 2010, and a month later, he dropped the first official C4 single, "6 Foot 7 Foot," featuring Cory Gunz. In March came the Rick Ross-assisted street single "John." After releasing a pair of rap-centric tracks, things got much more rhythmic with the album's third single, "How to Love," and "She Will" with Drake.

"I don't think he would've did "She Will" or "So Special" right before he went in," Mack said of two of Tha Carter IV's more female-friendly tracks. "That wasn't where his mind was at, but all in all, you got some of Wayne before he went in, you actually got some of Wayne while he was in there, and you got some when he came out. So you got three different sides of Wayne."

LOS ANGELES — With Beyoncé and Jay-Z now expecting their first child, the Watch the Throne track "New Day" takes on a whole new meaning.

On the self-reflecting soul track, Hov and Kanye West rap to their unborn children, but now that Jigga will be a big poppa, some fans are wondering: Are the song's lyrics a life-imitating-art situation, or was the father-to-be dropping early clues?

Though his lyrical motivations are unclear right now, "New Day" producer RZA likes the message Jay-Z and Kanye are sending. "I love what they do, so I just felt good to hear what they do," RZA said on the red carpet for the BMI Urban Awards over the weekend. "And then for them to talk about the future generation of their children, they continue to show their solid dopeness and their growth as well."

"I'm sorry, Junior, I already ruined ya," Jay raps with regret as he fears that his past sins could come back like a karma boomerang to affect his unborn. Still, in the same breath, Hov rhymes about simply being able to take his kid to a barber shop and charter private planes.

When the Brooklyn MC began his path to becoming one of rap's greats by dropping his debut Reasonable Doubt in 1996, he was already a grown man. On "New Day," he aims to provide the right amount of guidance, so things don't take quite as long for his seed. "It took me 26 years to find my path/ My only job is cutting time in half."

There are other jewels passed on, like looking a person in the eyes when you talk to them and the importance of keeping your word. In the end, Jay gives his most heartfelt pledge: "Promise to never leave him, even if his mama tweaking/ 'Cause my dad left, and I promise never repeat him."

Last year Drake had to release his platinum debut while his mentor Lil Wayne was in the midst of an eight-month jail bid. This year, as he gears up to drop his sophomore LP, Take Care, the Toronto MC is looking to Wayne for some firsthand inspiration.

"I think for me to be part of a team and have the general, the boss, go sit it down for like eight months is always a difficult thing," Drake told MTV News at the album release party for Weezy's Tha Carter IV in Los Angeles on Sunday night. "That's like a real responsibility. I'm just proud of the fact that myself and Nicki [Minaj] and the entire family were able to keep things afloat until he got out and was able to release this album."

Now that C4 is finally in stores and looks to be successful — Billboard is projecting the album to sell as many as 900,000 copies in its first week — Drake is up next.

Drizzy is currently putting the finishing touches on Take Care, and with his October 24 release date fast approaching, Young Angel doesn't have much time. Watching Weezy's work ethic gives him plenty of inspiration, even in the YMCMB crew's most celebratory moments. "It's like if I choose to go after this and go kick it with a woman or go out for drinks, I know I'm potentially slippin' because I have brothers like [Rick] Ross and Wayne that are working nonstop," Drake said of his possible post-party plans. "Me being a kid from Canada coming into this whole thing, being able to observe my heroes do this sh--, it's like all I want to do is work. I just want to make this album as incredible as I can."

Ross is also getting ready to drop an album — his fifth to be exact. His upcoming God Forgives, I Don't is due later this year, and he is proud of his friend Wayne, who closed out the 2011 MTV VMAs on Sunday and then dropped his album digitally at midnight to mark the occasion. "He dropped his album at the VMAs like a boss. That's something an artist can only dream of, when you talk about timing, after doin' time," he said before turning his attention back to his work. "So I just think it's time for us to keep focus, keep grinding. Of course, we're gonna celebrate tonight, but tomorrow we're back at it."

Though he's released a few songs like "Headlines" and "Marvins Room," it is still too early to try to make any qualitative judgment on Drake's Take Care, but it sure seems like he's putting that work in. "I really see the hardest-working people to ever do this. I see them, we speak, we have moments and talk and we're in the same sessions," Drizzy said of Wayne and Ross. "So I really sit back and digest it all and try to apply it to my own craft."

LOS ANGELES — Lil Wayne may have just dropped Tha Carter IV, but don't expect his Young Money artists to just stand around and bask in Weezy's multiplatinum glow. Drake's Take Care will be the next album to drop on the label, and Tyga's Careless World is coming soon, as well as Birdman's Cash Money release Bigga Than Life. Dallas rapper Lil Twist is cooking up his debut too, and fans can expect a big-time collaboration.

"Don't Get It Twisted is definitely coming before the year is over," the 18-year-old rapper said on the 2011 VMA black carpet. "I'm getting ready to put out my next record, which features Justin [Bieber], the one that everybody's been waitin' on. 'Wherever You Are' featuring Justin Bieber coming soon."

Twist and Bieb's friendship is no secret. Twizzy has been teasing a full collaborative mixtape between the two, but as of now, nothing has materialized. "Me and Justin, we actually met through a mutual friend, and after that, we got real cool, actually," he told MTV News last November. "[We] started working in the studio, sending stuff through the MacBook and everything. And then he was like, 'Yo, bro, we should do a mixtape. Let's go.' We just started then."

While there is no telling when the mixtape will come, Twist is confident that their single will surface shortly. "It's gonna be great. It's a cool summer record," Twist told MTV News of his and Justin's upcoming collaboration. "It's a party song. Straight for the sun. It's a Miami record."

In 2010, Twist dropped the album's first single, "Little Secret," featuring Bow Wow and came back this year with the Lil Wayne-assisted "Love Affair." The R&B-laced song found Twist singing about being caught in the middle of a love triangle, while Wayne crudely rapped around the same subject. For his current single, "New Money," the YMCMB young'un hooked up with R&B singer Mishon.

A promotional insert included with Tha Carter IV CD has Don't Get It Twisted slated for a November 8 release; whether that date sticks remains to be seen.

'American Reunion' First-Look Clip Hits The Net

The East Great Falls class of 1999 are coming back together for a good old-fashioned "American Reunion."

The first teaser for the fourth installment of the "American Pie" comedy series hit the Internet, courtesy of People.com, and the 60-second clip features a montage of pics of the main characters posing in a photo booth at their high-school reunion. "Get ready for one last slice," the video teases in a voiceover.

Starring Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Seann William Scott and Eddie Kaye Thomas, the final movie in the "Pie" series follows the beloved characters as they come together for their 10-year reunion. A recently released plot synopsis teases that things aren't so different for the old friends a decade later; Finch (Kaye Thomas), for one, is still longing for Stifler's (Scott) mom.

It turns out that the bond among the castmembers is also just as strong, even so many years after they filmed the '99 original. People.com caught up with Scott and Biggs, and they talked about the impact "American Pie" has had on their lives.

"We realized that no matter how much we may have changed individually, as a group, we will always be connected and have a special chemistry that arises immediately when we're together," Biggs said.

According to Scott, that involves a lot of boys being boys. "In many respects, we've grown up a lot," he said. "But on the other hand, we haven't grown up at all. On set, Jason Biggs was farting up a storm, Chris Klein was belching, and Eddie Kaye Thomas and Biggs were hitting each other in [the groin]."

Directed by "Harold & Kumar" helmers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, "American Reunion" has reunited its original cast en masse: Eugene Levy, Natasha Lyonne, Shannon Elizabeth and Jennifer Coolidge are all back. Newcomers Katrina Bowden and Chad Ochocinco also hit the reunion when the movie opens in theaters on April 6, 2012.

Demi Lovato 'Stoked' About Missy Elliott, Timbaland Collabo

LOS ANGELESDemi Lovato is ready to launch the next phase of her music career. She dropped her moving ballad "Skyscraper" earlier this summer and now fans are ready to hear what else the singer has up her sleeve when she releases her album Unbroken in September.

While the album will feature a number of collabos with artists like Jason Derülo, Iyaz and Dev, one track in particular, "All Night Long," features two of urban radio's biggest '90s superstars, Missy Elliott and Timbaland. Last week, Lovato spoke to MTV News and told us that working with the legendary duo, who helped shape the careers of singers like Aaliyah, couldn't have been more of a dream come true.

"I was so stoked when I went into the studio. I was working with Timbaland, and Missy was there, and she was like, she heard one of the songs and she asked if she could rap on it," Lovato recalled about their July recording session.

"And I was like, 'Of course, that's not even a question.' And she did, and she killed it."

According to Lovato, the party track is pretty much the polar opposite of "Skyscraper," showing off a whole new side of the 19-year-old. "The song that Missy and I did together, Timbaland's actually on it, too, and it's fun," she said. "It's about staying up all night long and singing it to the boy that you like, and it's flirty and fun and it's not too grown-up, but it's grown-up enough."

Lovato has already started making the rounds to promote the upcoming album, including a fan meet-and-greet in Los Angeles last week and a performance at Perez Hilton's pre-VMA party. She went on to present Best Collaboration at the VMAs on Sunday night.

Next month, Lovato will play two shows, one each in New York and one in Los Angeles.

Shia LaBeouf Calls Marilyn Manson Video 'A Cool Diversion'

File this story under the most surprising of pairings: "Transformers" superstar Shia LaBeouf and Marilyn Manson have teamed up for Manson's new music video, "Born Villain."

So how did these two artists come together? Well, they met at a Kills concert, where LaBeouf, a longtime Manson fan, casually approached the "Beautiful People" singer and struck up a conversation that sparked a genuine friendship.

"Marilyn Manson to me is an indelible figure," LaBeouf told MTV News, speaking exclusively about the collaboration for the first time. "He's a big deal to me, and in my childhood, I don't know of a scarier figure in art. He, in my teenage years, was the scariest thing in the world, so part of me has always been intrigued."

LaBeouf told Manson that he would love to direct his next video and showed him his previous work, Cage's "Maniac" clip, as proof that he knows what he's doing behind the camera.

"I played 'Maniac' for [Manson], and he freaked the f--- out," LaBeouf recalled. "Manson goes crazy. Manson's like, 'I want you to do my video.' "

The two then began prep work on "Born Villain," which draws heavily from very intense, graphic imagery, specifically a famous French surrealist short film, Shakespeare and theology.

"The song has all these references to 'Macbeth' and all this Shakespeare and heavy theology, so we tried to make Manson's 'Un Chien Andalou' macabre 'Macbeth' — that's sort of what that became."

To celebrate the LaBeouf-directed video, which is much more short film than standard clip, LaBeouf and Manson will be appearing together at a one-time-only book signing and screening Thursday at Hennessey + Ingalls bookstore in Los Angeles from 8 to 10 p.m. The 18-and-up event is private and limited to 150 attendees on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to receive tickets, those who wish to attend must purchase the limited-edition "Born Villain" photo book at the Hennessey + Ingalls website, which also comes with a copy of the short film.

Unsurprisingly, the imagery in the video is very graphic and very adult. Those who only know LaBeouf from his clean-cut film roles will likely be shocked by this directorial effort, but LaBeouf isn't worried about those reactions.

"This, for me, this is a really cool diversion for me when I'm not making a movie," LaBeouf explained. "It gives me an opportunity to work with musicians I admire who I would otherwise never get to work with in any other capacity. I really have a fun time doing it. It allows me to be creative in another art form and work with heroes.

"I also think there are fans of mine who aren't fans of Manson's and vice versa; that's why I think our collaboration is interesting. I don't really see it on paper," he continued. "I don't see fans of mine who went to see 'Holes' when they were 12 loving this. I don't think my audience is the only thing I should exercise my artistic muscle for. I don't necessarily always do things for the audience; this is one of those.

"I love Marilyn," LaBeouf said. "Manson is like a brother to me now. He's a real sweet dude, a real close friend."

Busta Rhymes 'Honored' To Be On <i>Tha Carter IV</i>

LOS ANGELES — With all his versatility, Lil Wayne puts his range on display on Tha Carter IV. Songs like the acoustic-R&B "How to Love" and the John Legend-laced "So Special" show Weezy's penchant for crafting female-friendly radio hits, while tracks like "6 Foot 7 Foot" and "John" revolve around Tunechi's rap roots. The album's "Intro," "Interlude" and "Outro" also celebrate rapping for rapping's sake.

On the "Intro," Wayne raps solo over a pounding, bottom-heavy beat supplied by newcomer Willy Will. Halfway through the album, Missouri MC Tech N9ne and Outkast spitter Andre 3000 appear atop the same instrumental on the C4 "Interlude." Finally, on the LP's "Outro," Bun B, Nas, Shyne and Busta Rhymes take their turns over that beat. As standalone cuts, the three tracks feature some pretty aggressive rap bars, but we couldn't help but notice that if Wayne were to string them together into one track, it might have been one of rap's most star-studded posse cuts.

"I actually close out Tha Carter IV. I'm the last voice you hear on Tha Carter IV," Busta Rhymes pointed out to MTV News on the 2011 VMA black carpet. "It's special because I didn't know that's what [Wayne] was gonna do with it."

With his rapid-fire verse, Busta boasts of his "uncompetewitable" rhyme style before toasting to Weezy by rhyming, "OK, enough of that, now I'm out the door/ Tunechi, thanks for giving us a whole 'nother classic with Tha Carter IV."

"When we did the joint, he didn't really tell us how he was gonna put it together. All I knew was that when it was done, it was me, Bun B, Nas and Shyne, and I was the last voice to be heard on the album, so I feel honored for that," Busta said.

Although he had yet to hear the completed version of C4, Bussa Bus was excited for his friend and frequent collaborator, Wayne. "I didn't really get to hear it in its entirety yet, but I hope that everybody understands that that man put his foot in this album," he said. "From what I did hear, being in the studio with him, he goin' ape sh-- on it."

Flo Rida Samples Etta James On 'Good Feeling'

Soul singers are making a comeback in 2011. First Jay-Z and Kanye resurrected Otis Redding on their single "Otis," and now Flo Rida reworks some classic Etta James vocals for his new single "Good Feeling."

And like his past #1 hits, including 2007's "Low" and '09's "Right Round," Flo is expecting to top the charts once again.

"It's legendary, we got Etta James featured on there, so it's crazy," he told MTV News from the 2011 VMA black carpet on Sunday. "Produced by Dr. Luke; you know we always with those #1 records. I'm very excited."

The song, which was released to iTunes on Monday, starts out with a dance-infused drum pattern, complete with electric bleeps that echo throughout the intro. After the eighth bar, Etta James' vocals are ushered in: "Ohhh, sometimes I get a good feeling."

The sample is lifted from James' 1962 "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and has been updated for a 2011 electro-feel. After the chorus, Flo comes in, rapping in double-time about his success in the music game. And the Carol City, Florida, MC has much to celebrate. Later this year, he'll release his fourth solo LP, Only One Rida (Part 2), the follow-up to his 2010 album, which included the hit singles "Club Can't Handle Me" and "Turn Around (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)."

Now he can add a song with Etta James — or at least an Etta James sample — to his list of musical moments. "You know, it just gotta be a blessing from God to make that happen," Flo Rida said. "We got that cleared and I'm very excited."

LOS ANGELES — David Guetta's just-dropped new album, Nothing but the Beat, features a handful of A-list contributors, including Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, will.i.am, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Akon and Usher. It's Guetta's latest entry into the world of mainstream music, and it seems that everyone in pop is scrambling to work with him.

When MTV News caught up with dance duo LMFAO, who worked with the French house-music DJ on the 2010 track "Gettin' Over You" (also featuring Fergie and Chris Willis), they revealed the real reason why everyone in the business wants to hop in the studio with Guetta.

"Well, he is a party starter; great DJ, great personality," RedFoo told MTV News last week before the 2011 Video Music Awards. "He shares his software with you. [He's like] 'Here's the whole bundle, enjoy.' I don't think we're supposed to talk about that ... but he would."

RedFoo's party partner, SkyBlu, said Guetta is such a pleasure to work with because he's an easygoing guy. "[He's the] happiest person you've ever met. He'll put a smile on your face no matter how bad your day's going. [If] you're gonna hang out with David, you're gonna have a smile on your face."

While they didn't share whether they had any plans to work with Guetta again, the guys did reveal that they shot the video for their next single, "Sexy and I Know It," in L.A. earlier this week.

Joe Jonas Is Perfecting His Dance Moves For <i>Fast Life</i>

Joe Jonas is gearing up for a very busy fall: He's heading out on the road with Jay Sean for a 19-city tour; his first solo album, Fast Life, hits stores October 11, and then he'll jet off with Britney Spears for the European leg of her Femme Fatale Tour. Though his single, "See No More," has been out for months, and he's been performing all over the place lately, there's still a chance this Jonas brother's new sound might surprise his longtime fans.

"The biggest difference is a little bit more urban and dance electronic stuff," Jonas told MTV News at the mtvU VMA Concert to Benefit Lifebeat - Music Fights HIV. "I've been influenced by a lot of different artists throughout my life and this is my opportunity to kind of show the world a little bit more about what I like writing and what I like coming up with musically."

If he's delivering that kind of sound, fans will probably expect him to show off his dance moves onstage, and Jonas says he's been working to perfect them for quite some time.

"It was a little bit difficult in the beginning to feel comfortable with it," Jonas said of learning his dance steps. " I've been rehearsing for a little over a year with Marty, who's a choreographer I work with, and he's made me feel a lot more comfortable onstage, a lot more comfortable in my own skin, which made the whole process 100 percent better."

Just last week, Jonas unveiled Fast Life's album cover, which he said is the perfect representation of the upcoming release.

"We had a couple of photo shoots trying to decide which direction we wanted to go in," Jonas said of the album cover. "And just kind of came together with having a really cool background and explaining Fast Life."

So what do those words mean for Jonas?

"I think my life has been so crazy busy for the past year and a half, and I kind of wanted to show people a little bit more of what my life is about, bring them into it a little bit more, so that's been a fun experience." Jonas said.

On September 24, Nirvana's epochal Nevermind album turns 20, a milestone that will be marked with much coverage, celebration and consternation in the media ... not to mention a sundry of other events, including a high-profile benefit concert at Seattle's Experience Music Project and a Jon Stewart-hosted Q&A with Nirvana's surviving members.

And understandably so. After all, Nevermind was a game-changer in every sense of the term — the kind of album that brought about seismic shifts in music, fashion and culture in general, one that defined a generation and, as such, deserves to be mythologized. And, in the coming weeks, we suspect you'll see no shortage of stories that do just that.

And while Nevermind casts an indelibly lengthy shadow, it bears mention that there was no shortage of other magical, massive and equally mythological albums that hit stores in 1991 ... ones that, had Nirvana never broken through, would probably be getting the royal treatment right now. In 1991, rock truly rocked, so, in celebration of that fact, we've asked some of today's biggest bands to discuss their favorite albums from that rather amazing year.

Don't worry, we'll give Nevermind its due ... but right now, we're paying tribute to 1991's other indispensible albums, in the words of their biggest fans.

Dinosaur Jr., Green Mind
Sludgy, somnambulant fourth album from Amherst, Massachusetts' premier purveyors of bad-posture rock, Green Mind represents Dino Jr. at a great divide: Not only is it their first album without original member Lou Barlow, it's also their first for major label Sire Records. Still, neither of those factors managed to sap its power, as mastermind J Mascis shouldered the load (it's basically a solo album) on tracks like the squalling "The Wagon" and the roiling "Puke & Cry." Of course, the band would later reconcile, but Green Mind still stands as a high-water mark, one that, from its iconic cover image to its shambolic moments of pure grandiosity, still stands the test of time.

As remembered by Mark Hoppus, Blink-182: "I got it when it came out and I just loved it, from the second that I listened to it. And I remember going to watch them at the Hollywood Palladium, and I think, actually, Nirvana opened that show maybe, or maybe not. [Editor's note: Nirvana did, in fact, open for Dino Jr. at the Palladium in June 1991.] But they played the Palladium, and it was the loudest show that I'd ever been to and my ears rang for three days afterwards and I was deathly afraid that I'd permanently ruined my hearing, which I probably did, but it was well worth it."

My Bloody Valentine, Loveless
The rare album that can be summarized entirely by its cover, MBV's Loveless is 48-odd minutes of guitars slowly corroding, collapsing and combusting into a gloriously woozy, decidedly pink hue. Then again, you should probably listen to it, if only to marvel at the sheer size of the thing: an epic sonic collage that echoes for days, full of ringing, winging chords, ruddy drum loops and ethereal, barely there vocals. It sounded like nothing else at the time and, really, that's still true today. Recorded in 19 different studios over the course of two years, it brought the band and its label, Creation, to the brink and was so huge an endeavor (in every regard) that, 20 years later, MBV have yet to record the follow-up. But that hasn't stopped an entire generation of musicians from taking cues from Kevin Shields' masterful din, most notably, the rather tricky art of learning how not to play guitar.

As remembered by Brian Oblivion, Cults: "In the same vein as Nevermind, Loveless is another game-changing album. There's that clichéd saying about the Velvet Underground, that they didn't have many fans, but all their fans started bands, and that's definitely the same thing with My Bloody Valentine. Like, every single one of my friends who heard that record immediately went out and bought a delay pedal and ... I'm not very good at guitar at this point in my life, and that's mostly because of My Bloody Valentine, because I'd just sit around in my basement and just make noise with loops and pedals and never learned how to actually play, like, 'Kevin Shields can't play, he's an artist.' To me, that album is all about texture, it's not about notes or melody or lyrics even ... the sound of a guitar became the sound of a cello, the sound of an orchestra, anything, and it kind of opened up the possibilities for everybody to do different kinds of music."

Slint, Spiderland
How is it possible that four kids from Louisville, Kentucky, could sound so preternaturally old? That's just one of the questions raised after listening to Spiderland, the second (and last) album from Slint, a band whose legacy far outweighs their actual output. A creaking, claustrophobic collection of songs that practically seethe tension (which sort of lends credence to the rumors that, following its recording, at least one member underwent psychiatric treatment), Spiderland crashes and coils in ways few other albums do: in a downright terrifying manner. Just give "Good Morning, Captain" a spin and try to say otherwise. And they looked like such nice young men on the cover.

As remembered by Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla, Death Cab for Cutie
Gibbard: "Kids, when they kind of get into music that they think is big and powerful and scary and loud, they gravitate towards hardcore, they gravitate towards punk rock, [because] to that point, that was the biggest, scariest, most aggressive kind of sounding thing that I had heard. But when I first heard Spiderland, it was the juxtaposition between the quiet and the loud that made it even a more powerful listening experience than listening to a hardcore band, because it was so quiet and it was so loud, and kind of feeling the dynamics between the loud and the quiet ... the scope between those things was really powerful."

Walla: "Spiderland is in a handful of records from the early '90s that are sort of recording-geek go-to's. And that was a record, for me, that was really a testament of how you can put together and structure a rock and roll recording in a way that didn't sound like Stone Temple Pilots. Rock and roll had gotten pretty big and pretty produced by that point and, for me, there were a handful of records that kids like me, who had a couple of microphones and an 8-track, sort of felt like, 'Oh, maybe I can do this and I should do this.' "

Drake Thinks JoJo 'Killed It' On 'Marvin's Room' Remix

LOS ANGELESJoJo has certainly grown up somewhere between releasing "Leave (Get Out)" back in 2004 as a 14-year-old and her very NSFW remix of Drake's "Marvin's Room."

As soon as JoJo dropped the sultry, sassy track, redubbed "Marvin's Room (Can't Do Better)," earlier this summer, blogs and music lovers went crazy over her mature voice and even more mature lyrical content. In the song, she coos lines like "F--- that new girl that you like so bad/ She's not crazy like me, I bet you like that."

Much like the Drizzy version, JoJo's version is a swirling ode to drunk dialing that special someone, and the longing of the track seemed to resonate with folks — which is the most surprising part to JoJo, considering she drops a few F-bombs.

"I was shocked!" she told MTV News on Sunday night on the VMA black carpet about the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the remix.

So how did she end up recording her answer to Drake's track? "Well, one of my friends was like, 'Jo, you gotta hear this new Drake song!' I loved it, and I thought Drake was really emotional and honest," she explained. "I was like, 'This a great record,' so I had a little time in the car ride [on my way to the airport]. So I wrote my version in the car ride, and I landed in L.A., I went to the studio, I recorded it, and the next day I put it on the Internet, and people really, really loved it. And I was totally shocked, 'cause I was scared to use the F-word, and I didn't know how people would respond to it."

The track, produced by Jordan Gatsby and featuring vocals from Travis Garland, is not only fan-approved, but also approved by the Canadian rapper himself.

"He said I killed it and that he was really happy with everyone's response," she said of Drake's reaction. "It meant a lot coming from him. It was all out of respect."

Red Hot Chili Peppers Say Josh Klinghoffer Was 'The Only Choice'

Over the course of their 28 years, change has been a near constant for the Red Hot Chili Peppers ... particularly when it comes to the man charged with playing guitar. Beginning with Jack Sherman, the Peppers have run through a string of ax men, including Hillel Slovak (who tragically died of a heroin overdose in 1988), Arik Marshall, Dave Navarro and, of course, John Frusciante, who not only played with the band the longest, but was famously responsible — in some form or another — for their biggest hits and best albums.

As you probably know by now, Frusciante continued the transitional trend when he left the Peppers during the hiatus that preceded their brand-new I'm With You album ... leaving a rather sizable hole in the band's lineup, and an even larger pair of shoes to fill.

Luckily, the band didn't have to look far to find his replacement: 31-year-old Josh Klinghoffer, who was not only a friend of Frusciante but had toured with the Chili Peppers towards the end of their Stadium Arcadium trek. And no, they didn't even think about going with anyone else.

"He was the only choice, and a lot of it had to do with the fact that he was our friend, and it's just rare that you have someone who's right there and completely overqualified for the job. I mean, that combination doesn't happen every day, so to ignore it would have been stupid," RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis told MTV News. "And it felt really good to call your friend and ask if they wanted to play music, as opposed to going to a stranger and asking them that."

So Klinghoffer stepped in and almost immediately found himself in the studio, as the Peppers began work on I'm With You. And if he was intimidated, well, the soft-spoken guitarist certainly wasn't about to let his new bandmates know about it.

"I just tried to stay in the moment, remain present," he said, smiling slightly. "I mean, I've known them for a long time, and knowing how they work and just how much they care about what they do ... The band, from its inception, has always been about four people getting into a room and making music together. And that's whether I brought in a chord progression or Flea did, or John in the past, or anyone before that, it was the same. We were doing it together."

Of course, Kiedis was more effusive with his praise, saying that Klinghoffer not only fit in with the band but breathed new life into it. And it was because of him that I'm With You pushes the Peppers' sound further than it's ever gone before.

"We had a load of faith in Josh coming into this band, and it was kind of understood that we are a band of equals when it comes to writing and contributing. The more the merrier," Kiedis said. "There's something that happens during that process of just playing for the sake of playing, for communicating, for letting your abilities mingle with those of the guy next to you.

"Both Josh and Flea would come in with ideas, homework, that they had done, and since Flea had been to school to learn piano and theory, he was coming in more frequently with piano chords instead of bass lines," he continued. "Josh kind of understands it without school, and Flea understands it, so their conversations were quite beautiful, and it sounded like Thelonious Monk talking to Coltrane or something. I mean that, honestly."

'Man Of Steel' Seen Up Close In New Set Photos

"Man of Steel" is taking a decidedly different turn from previous Superman films. Lois Lane is a redhead. Laurence Fishburne is playing the first non-white Perry White. And those red underpants are long gone.

Based on the latest set photos that have hit the Web, Superman's suit has gotten a serious update as well. The first image of Henry Cavill as Superman was released earlier this month, but his position in the shot made it hard to get a complete look at the suit. These new stills offer the first up-close, full-body looks at the outfit in Zack Snyder's Superman movie, and the response to the new look has been positive so far.

SuperHeroHype compiled the photos, which show Cavill walking around on the set in between takes. The suit has a lot more texture than Superman's outfits in previous films, and also has added new accents, including silvery lines that wrap around the torso, and go up the back and down the legs.

This new take on Superman's look seems a lot more Kryptonian than the ones made famous by Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh. It's darker and more subdued hues and stylized form make it look a lot more alien than other manifestations of the suit. Also worth noting is the fact that Cavill isn't wearing his red cape in many of these pictures, which means there's a chance that the cape could be CGI for part of the movie. Of course, he also could have just taken the cape off between takes.

For fans still complaining about the lack of red underpants in Snyder's "Man of Steel," it should be noted that the decision is reflective of Superman's new costume in the DC Comics reboot that kicked off on Wednesday.

Game Scores #1 Debut With <i>R.E.D. Album</i>

After more delays than a space shuttle launch, Compton rapper the Game will finally have his reward next week when his endlessly pushed-back fourth effort, The R.E.D. Album, debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. According to figures provided by SoundScan, the disc moved just under 98,000 copies, enough to grab the top spot but well below the first-week figures for his 2008 album LAX, which opened with 239,000 in sales.

Either way, it's just enough to beat out Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne, which drops to #2 in its third week, as sales dove 47 percent to 94,000 for a three-week total just north of 707,000. Among the new entries in the top 10 is a Barbra Streisand collection, What Matters Most — Barbra Streisand Sings the Lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman (#4, 66,000), the debut from country supergroup Pistol Annies, Hell on Heels (#5, 44,000), which consists of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley, and Muppets: The Green Album (#8, 30,000), with modern interpretations of the lovable puppets' songs by OK Go, Weezer, My Morning Jacket, Amy Lee of Evanescence and the Fray.

The rest of the top 10: Adele's 21 (#3, 82,000), NOW 39 (#6, 44,000), Luke Bryan's Tailgates & Tanlines (#7, 35,000), Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party (#9, 29,000) and Eric Church's Chief (#10, 24,000).

Further down the line, Pavement singer Stephen Malkmus and his band the Jicks come in at #43 with Mirror Traffic (8,000), and 30 Seconds to Mars land at #76 with their new Unplugged set (6,000). Lil Wayne immediately jumped to the top of the iTunes album charts after Tha Carter IV dropped digitally following the VMAs on Sunday. He was followed by the Pistol Annies, Game, Adele, Jay and Kanye, Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' I'm With You, the Muppets album, Foster the People's Torches and Rihanna's resurgent Loud.

Maroon 5 continue to dominate the singles chart with "Moves Like Jagger," while Foster the People are right behind with "Pumped Up Kicks," Gym Class Heroes make a strong showing with "Stereo Hearts" (featuring Maroon's Adam Levine) and Rihanna has plenty to toast as "Cheers (Drink to That)" comes in at #4. Rounding out the tally: Bad Meets Evil's "Lighters," LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," Wayne's "She Will," Lady Gaga's "You and I," Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" and OneRepublic's Good Life."

Things will surely be shaken up next week when Wayne's Tha Carter IV crashes the charts with estimates that it could sell nearly 1 million copies. Also debuting are the Chili Peppers, as well as David Guetta, VMA pre-show performers Cobra Starship and Lenny Kravitz.

T.I. Released To Halfway House

Atlanta rapper released from prison and taken to community living facility for the last month of his sentence.

T.I. was released from prison early Wednesday morning (August 31) and is on his way to a halfway house to serve out the rest of his 11-month sentence for probation violation.

MTV News received confirmation from Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman Chris Burke that T.I. was released from Forrest City Correctional Facility in Arkansas at 7:29 a.m. and is on his way to a community living facility. The name of the facility will not be released until after his arrival. The Atlanta rapper has been serving time for a probation violation stemming from his arrest in Los Angeles on drug charges last year.

The King has already taken to Twitter to announce his return. "Feels great to be back where I belong...Back in the arms of those who need me the most," he tweeted from his verified @Tip account. "The storm is over & da sun back out. IT'S OUR TIME TO SHINE SHAWTY!!!!! Welcome to the beginning of our Happy Ending!!!!"

Fans will be getting an intimate look at T.I.'s return to freedom in December thanks to a new show with VH1. In the still untitled series, viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at T.I., and his wife Tameka "Tiny" Harris, as he tries to walk the straight and narrow and stay out of prison for good. The series is set to premiere on December 5 at 10 p.m.

Previously, T.I. had a reality series titled "T.I.'s Road to Redemption" that ran in 2009 on MTV. The show followed the MC as he provided guidance to teenagers on destructive paths while he himself prepared to serve a yearlong sentence for felony gun charges.
