Both could end up with multiple Moonmen on Sunday, according to music journalists.

You can always count on outrageous entrances, pimped out red (or white, or black) carpets and plenty of over-the-top performances at the VMAs. But until that envelope is cracked open and the name is called, nobody really knows who is going to take home those Moonmen during the broadcast. (And no, just because we work at MTV doesn't mean we're in on the winners' list.)

As the anticipation builds for Sunday night, we asked a couple of professional pop-culture junkies to help us predict the VMA class of 2011 using a complicated system of ... oh, let's face it, they were guessing just like the rest of us. (For a more mathematical approach, find out what Vegas oddsmakers predict for the VMAs.)

Video of the Year
Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
Beastie Boys, "Make Some Noise"
Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
Katy Perry, "Firework"
Tyler, the Creator, "Yonkers"

Ian Drew, Senior Music Editor, Us Weekly : "Adele will win. I think it was her year, and this will cement that she is the new face of the music industry."

Kyle Anderson, Staff Writer, Entertainment Weekly : "This seems like a really tough one. Adele has a lot of nominations, but I don't ever feel like there was any excitement for that video. ... I would think this would go to Katy, though it's not her most iconic video. It's her message video, and it's a clip that people talked about, and it has a lot of fireworks in it. Who could say no to that?"

Best New Artist
Big Sean (featuring Chris Brown), "My Last"
Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks"
Kreayshawn, "Gucci Gucci"
Tyler, the Creator, "Yonkers"
Wiz Khalifa, "Black and Yellow"

Drew: "I think it's Foster the People's breakout year. This is a way to honor this band that is bubbling up and taking over. They're kind of this year's Kings of Leon, because everyone is talking about them."

Anderson: "It's kind of weird that Foster the People are in there, but they seem to be peaking now, and they've had a slow burn. But this seems to be where they give Tyler the Moonman, even though I think the buzz around Odd Future has cooled off. ... Of all these videos, when Tyler's premiered everyone talked about it and he seems self-promotional enough and enough of a lightning rod [to make for good TV]. Plus, it's hard to get that image of him playing with the cockroach out of my head."

Best Pop Video
Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
Britney Spears, "Till the World Ends"
Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"
Pitbull (featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer), "Give Me Everything"

Drew: "I'll give this one to Katy, because I think Adele will take Video of the Year, and they'll want to give Katy something big and honor her for a slew of amazing videos. This one is the best; it's so poppy and high-concept. Katy's videos are a throwback to the great art of video making, while Adele's is very simple."

Anderson: "There's a lot of heavy hitters and, again, I would like to hand something shiny to Adele, but I don't think of 'Rolling' as a pop song in the way the rest of them are. I'm a real sucker for Katy Perry, and I think the 'Friday' video is kind of awesome. It's big and colorful, and she's clearly into it and trying very hard. It's a definitive statement of who she is and the year she's had. Plus, any time you can get a Rebecca Black cameo in there ..."

Best Rock Video
Cage the Elephant, "Shake Me Down"
Foo Fighters, "Walk"
Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks"
Mumford & Sons, "The Cave"
The Black Keys, "Howlin' For You"

Drew: "I have a feeling Foster will take Best New Artist, and this was the year of Mumford & Sons, so maybe this is the place to honor them. They had a high-concept video as well, but they could want to honor the veteran Foo Fighters because they did another one of their comedic, hilarious tongue-in-cheek videos."

Anderson: "I'm not a big Mumford fan, but I like that video because mopeds are funny. I think the win will go to the Foo Fighters, though. They've done parodies before, but it's such a strange choice to pick 'Falling Down' as an inspiration, and in a weird way it works. It's a movie about white-people problems, and there's no better middle-age white-people problems band than the Foo Fighters. It's the best song on that record, too, and it reminds of why that band is so great."

Best Video With a Message
Eminem (featuring Rihanna), "Love the Way You Lie"
Katy Perry, "Firework"
Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"
Pink, "F----- Perfect"
Rise Against, "Make It Stop (September's Children)"
Taylor Swift, "Mean"

Drew: "I think it's clearly Lady Gaga. There hasn't been that kind of example of a message song tied with a video in a long time, and the message is plastered across the video so strongly. Plus, they don't want her to leave empty-handed, because when it comes to acceptance speeches, she gives a great, echoing message and it guarantees a great on-air moment."

Anderson: "My favorite video out of all of these is the Pink one. Even it goes through very well-trod material in music videos that appears in every Lifetime movie, it gets the point across in nice way. I know the song 'Born This Way' has a message, but I'm not sure that video has a message unless it's about space travel. If I was a voter, I'd go for the Pink video, but of all of these, it seems like Katy's works the best, if only because she's never done anything like that before, whereas Eminem has a lot of videos about domestic violence. It's such a departure for Katy, who grew up so sheltered and is just now engaging with these kinds of issues that it feels like it could be a thing that could help be a culmination of her crazy-ass year."

Best Hip-Hop Video
Chris Brown (featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes), "Look at Me Now"
Kanye West (featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi), "All of the Lights"
Lil Wayne (featuring Cory Gunz), "6 Foot, 7 Foot"
Lupe Fiasco, "The Show Goes On"
Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass"

Anderson: "I really, really like that Wayne video if only because I'm very charmed by the idea that Lil Wayne would go see 'Inception' and say, 'I gotta do that!' It seems like exactly how his brain works, 'I'll slow-motion fall into water!' But it seems like Nicki Minaj's to lose. That song and video have been weirdly sticky."

Best Female Video
Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
Beyoncé, "Run the World (Girls)"
Katy Perry, "Firework"
Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"
Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass"

Drew: "This is probably the toughest category. You figure Adele will get Video of the Year and she could sweep this one as well. Katy's a contender, but Gaga won't get it and Nicki's not as a big in terms of the impact of her video. Beyoncé's video is very high-tech, high-energy and very well choreographed and stylized and is one of those ones they typically would honor. But it will be down to Katy or Adele, and even though her video was not the best one, I think they might try to do a sweep with Adele [to make a statement]."

Anderson: "I feel like Adele has to win one of these and this may be the one, just because among these people, she also feels like the outlier. Everybody else is very polished and in the mainstream, and I like an outlier."

Best Male Video
Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
Cee Lo Green, "F--- You"
Eminem (featuring Rihanna), "Love the Way You Lie"
Justin Bieber, "U Smile"
Kanye West (featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi), "All of the Lights"

Drew: "I think Cee Lo should win, even though Bruno is performing, and it's tempting to give him something. There's no denying the impact of Cee Lo's video, and you will get a hilarious moment of his accepting the award onstage."

Anderson: "Even though my favorite is Cee Lo, it seems like his window might have been missed, so I'm gonna give this to Eminem, although it's weird giving Best Male to a video that prominently features a woman. It's very well done and cinematic and it gets the point across."

LOS ANGELES — Fans were promised a rock-star-like Lil Wayne VMA performance, and judging from his stage rehearsal Saturday (August 27) at the Nokia Theatre, Weezy F. will deliver for Sunday's big show.

"We've been brainstorming and taking from things that we put together on the road, so I think they can just expect a new-and-improved Wayne, a different Wayne," Weezy's musical director Gil Smith told MTV News. "You know, he always comes different: One day he's a rock star, one day he's a skater; he's singing R&B. I think we can expect a little bit of everything in this performance."

Backed by a full band, the Cash Money Billionaire ran through his set, which included a heavy-metal take on one of his songs. The energetic MC bounced around the stage as he worked out the particulars, perfecting his set.

After the awards show, Wayne's C4 will be released at midnight on iTunes and other digital retailers before the physical CD version is dropped Tuesday.

"The MTV Video Music Awards are one of the most watched and respected shows in the industry," Ronald "Slim" Williams, CEO of Cash Money Records, said in a statement. "Wayne is one of the most respected and prolific artists in the industry. By pairing the release of Tha Carter IV with the VMAs, it will certainly add to the overall anticipation and excitement for fans everywhere for what will surely be an unforgettable evening."

As Hurricane Irene bore down on the East Coast and the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards heated up on the West, "Jersey Shore" stars Snooki, Vinny, Deena and Sammi hopped a last-minute private jet from New Jersey to Los Angeles. Nothing was going to stop them from missing the VMAs.

"We had to get out here for the VMAs," Vinny told MTV News hours after touching down in Los Angeles. "MTV did whatever they could to get us out here. We wouldn't miss it for the world."

His pal Pauly D, meanwhile, had been safely kicking back in Oklahoma City after an earlier brush with the hurricane in North Carolina while touring with Britney Spears. "Irene got nothing on my blowout," he declared, while acknowledging the storm poses a serious risk to the public.

"I was nervous. This storm's no joke," he said. "Immediately I texted Vinny, because I didn't think we were going to make it. ... I thought I was going to have to fill in for everybody. I can't talk for everybody. I talk a lot. But it was no joke, and I was not missing the VMAs for nothing. Seriously, I was coming here. I didn't care how I was coming here, but I was going to make it."

It's no doubt going to be a big night for the "Shore" kids. The highly anticipated episode showcasing the resolution of Ronnie's dustup with the Situation is set to air at 7 p.m. ET immediately before the VMA Pre-Show. And as soon as "Jersey Shore" ends, the cast will be making their way down the VMA Pre-Show black carpet and settling into prime seats for the main event. But while they kick back and enjoy all the VMA craziness, they'll be thinking of their friends and family back home.

"Our prayers go out for everyone on the East Coast," Vinny said. "We're looking out for them, but I think they're going to be all right."

If Adele is ever feeling unloved again, all she has to do is look at the charts and see that she has more than 3 million people who are really feeling her second album, 21. And as she prepares to take the stage at Sunday night's VMAs, where she's nominated for seven awards for the smash hit from her breakthrough effort, "Rolling in the Deep," she can also take heart in knowing that a lot of her fellow divas are crushing on her as well.

"She's a breath of fresh air and she's so exciting and her music is adding another dimension to radio that's so important," Lady Gaga, who is opening the 2011 VMAs, told MTV News. "She's [also] a truly lovely person -- which, to me, is always my favorite."

Whether they're enamored with her powerful singing voice, her sweet disposition or her stirring live performances, Adele has plenty of other professional admirers.

"I'm so proud [of her]," said "Price Tag" singer and pal Jessie J, who will be the house artist at Sunday's VMAs. "I did go to school with Adele and she's a good friend of mine, and I'm so proud of her and I'm so excited to see her. I definitely think she should win something this year. She deserves it."

"Victorious" star Victoria Justice is also a big fan. "I'm really excited to see Adele perform. ... 'Rolling in the Deep' is amazing, but her new album, 21, is just really, really great. I'm excited to see her live. I think she's so talented, and I'm so happy that she's become this huge star."

In addition to her multiple nods, Adele will take the stage Sunday night to perform at the VMAs, along with Beyoncé, Gaga, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and more.

LMFAO Say Past VMA Invitations 'Lost' In The Mail

While LMFAO acted as our red-carpet VMA DJs last year, Sunday will mark their first time at the main show, where their zombie-themed "Party Rock" video is up for Best Choreography.

So how is it that the dance-music duo are VMA virgins?

"This might be the first time we were invited, or we might not have gotten [the invitation] in the mail," SkyBlu joked to MTV News on Saturday (August 27), just one day before the show takes place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. "The last 28 invitations got lost."

His partner in party crimes, RedFoo, added: "We always move every year, and the Postal Service hasn't figured it out. And we always get the things, like, 'That was three months ago; could have went.' "

Well, now that they're going, LMFAO have some words for their competition in the category, which includes Britney Spears ("Till the World Ends"), Bruno Mars ("The Lazy Song"), Lady Gaga ("Judas") and Beyoncé ("Run the World [Girls]").

"We gonna have to go ahead and take that," SkyBlu warned. "We're gonna have to go take that back to the shack ... we've already won. The whole world's shuffling. We made so many people happy [and] so many people made us happy. I feel like we've already won, so thank you."

Britney Spears Is 'Epitome Of Pop,' Says Demi Lovato

Demi tells MTV News why she's looking forward to Britney's VMA tribute.

Britney Spears is set to get the tribute treatment this Sunday at the 2011 Video Music Awards. At 29, she may be younger than your typical awards show tribute subject, but looking back at Brit's catalog of great videos and memorable VMA moments, we think she deserves it.

As part of the new generation of pop stars following in Britney's footsteps, Demi Lovato is pretty excited to see how the icon will be honored on Sunday night.

"Who isn't a Britney Spears fan?" Lovato asked, just days before the show goes live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. "My favorite Britney Spears song is 'I Wanna Go,' 'cause it's the latest song that she has and I love it."

Go behind the scenes as Britney films her 2011 VMA promo.

Since Spears first took the VMA stage back in 1999, alongside 'NSYNC, she's managed to rack up five performances and take home four Moonmen, the first of which was back in 2008, over 11 years after her first appearance on the show. At this year's show, she's up for two awards for her video for "Till The World Ends," Best Pop Video and Best Choreography.

Demi has a simpler reason for a Britney tribute: " 'Cause she's the ultimate pop star; nobody can touch her," Lovato said. "She's been around for such a long time now and she's the epitome of pop. So when I think of pop music, I think of her."

While Demi is gushing about Brit's long pop career, she's poised to launch the next phase of her own. She will drop her album Unbroken next month. Its lead single, "Skyscraper," rocketed to the top of the charts when it was released earlier this summer.

What are you hoping to see in the Britney Spears tribute? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Katy Perry: From VMA Rookie To VMA Royalty

Posted: 27 Aug 2011 04:07 AM PDT

This year's top nominee has yet to win a Moonman, but she did nab a husband!
By Jocelyn Vena

At Sunday's VMAs, one very kooky, colorful California Gurl is poised to rule the night: Katy Perry tops the nominees with a whopping nine nods for "E.T.," "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," "Teenage Dream" and "Firework."

"It's always exciting to be a part of the VMAs because there's so much spontaneity," she told MTV News. "I just remember growing up seeing craziness ensued with the VMAs. I wasn't allowed to see it, but I done watched it!"

While Perry has yet to win a Moonman, the show has played an important role in her career and personal life in other interesting ways. Let's take a look back at Perry's short-but-memorable history with the Video Music Awards and look forward to what she can expect Sunday night:

2008
Kinga Burza, the director of Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" video, warned MTV News that the up-and-coming pop star would soon be a force to be reckoned with. "She's fresh, original, intelligent and talented, with a star-like charisma, which will have boys and girls all around the world cooing for more," Burza said.

And she was right. Perry made her VMA debut that year, singing along with the night's house band, Travis Barker and the late DJ AM. That night, "I Kissed a Girl" was up for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Female Video and Best New Artist.

She went home empty-handed, but the show was the first time (and certainly not the last) that she and host Russell Brand crossed paths.

2009
The VMAs returned to New York City, and Perry had become a household name. She was nominated for Best Female Video for "Hot n Cold" and opened the show with a rocking performance of Queen's "We Will Rock You" alongside Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry.

Although she didn't take any prizes home, she did manage to nab Brand, who hosted the show for a second year. Perry said she saw a different side of the comedian during and after the show. "I really appreciate his sense of humor," she explained. "It's real dark, it's real wrong and it's really funny."

Explore our "Katy Perry: By The Numbers" infographic:

2010
Perry hit the white-hot VMA carpet in Los Angeles, and was by then one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Her relationship with Brand had escalated to an engagement, and her sweet and sassy "California Gurls" video, featuring Snoop Dogg, was nominated for Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.

"I like the idea of this being like a board game," she said of the video in 2009. "It's kind of like Candy Land. That was probably one of my favorite games to play growing up. I like to bring back those pure childhood moments and give them a little bit of a naughty twist, of course."

2011
Perry is coming up on her fourth VMA appearance, and this could finally be her year. She's back in her home state of California, she's tied the knot with Brand, and she's broken all sorts of records with the songs from her Teenage Dream album, including becoming the first female artist with five #1 singles from the same album.

Considering she's up for hardware in categories like best Female Video ("Firework"), Video of the Year ("Firework") and Best Collaboration ("E.T.") featuring Kanye West, to name a few, her chances of bringing home a Moonman or two are looking good.

Cobra Starship Prep To Rock VMA Pre-Show

MTV Video Music Awards newbies say, 'You often like the appetizer more than the main course,' about performing Sunday night.
By Gil Kaufman

LOS ANGELES — Fried calamari, cheese logs, jalapeño poppers, nachos ... and Cobra Starship? All of the above are delicious appetizers, and according to the VMA pre-show black-carpet performers, so are they.

"We haven't played on the VMAs," said guitarist Ryland Blackinton about the group's chance to break into the ranks of MTV Video Music Awards veterans when they warm up Sunday night's broadcast with "You Make Me Feel" featuring Sabi.

"Is performing at the pre-show as prestigious as performing at the VMAs proper?" lead singer Gabe Saporta wondered.

MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway assured him that it was, explaining, "You're the first people that anyone sees."

Blackinton liked that answer, reasoning that, "You often like the appetizer more than the main course, because you're more hungry." Besides, he added, you might be so full by the time the main course comes around that you push the plate away and send it back.

With a lineup that includes Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Adele, Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars, Pitbull and Ne-Yo, newcomers Young the Giant and Chris Brown, chances are viewers will leave plenty of room for the entrée.

And based on their rehearsals Saturday afternoon (August 27), Starship will provide a nice run-up to the star-packed main event. Standing under a series of shimmering silver curtains hanging over a stage in the middle of the JW Marriott hotel lobby, the group played the song over, and over, and over as sound and lighting technicians got everything just right.

After several run-throughs, Saporta and Sabi practiced their long and winding road to the stage, which will take them through several of the major elements of the eye-popping black carpet. Once they hit the stage, it was flooded in cool blue and pink lights and strobe-light effects as they flirted their way through half-a-dozen takes.

The band's members also gave their pick for who they think will take home the coveted Video of the Year prize, a tight race between Adele, Bruno Mars, the Beastie Boys, Katy Perry and Tyler, the Creator.

"The Beastie Boys one was amazing," Blackinton said. "Incredible, but [Tyler's] 'Yonkers' just as a video concept, that's definitely mine."

Saporta said he's definitely onboard with Tyler as well, revealing that he was obsessed with the video when it first came out, watching it every day. "I tried to show it to my girlfriend, and she had to turn it off," he said, speculating that she might have been disturbed by all the bug-chomping action.

Kim Kardashian and her new hubby, basketballer Kris Humphries, are back Stateside. The pair made their way to Los Angeles after a mini-honeymoon abroad.

The two left earlier this week for their honeymoon, which they spent in Italy. On Friday night, they were spotted at LAX. Kardashian tweeted, "Back in the US and it feels sooo good! Had such a fun relaxing time away! Back to reality!"

She then went on to tweet about some of the things she missed while away, like the premiere of Beyoncé's dewy, sexy "1+1" video. She added, "Beyoncé looks soooo stunningly gorgeous in her new video 1 + 1 !"

Kardashian will appear at Sunday's 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The reality starlet will be a presenter at the show, which includes performances from Pitbull with Ne-Yo, Lady Gaga (who will open the show), Adele, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Bruno Mars and Beyoncé.

The show will certainly be filled with A-listers besides Kardashian: Taylor Lautner, Joe Jonas, Selena Gomez (who will also be MTV News' pre-show correspondent), Jonah Hill, Odd Future, Rick Ross and Seth Rogen will all be on hand to present.

Kardashian and Humphries married a week ago in California, and the bride's friends are raving about the lavish ceremony. "The dresses were so gorgeous," "Footloose" star Julianne Hough gushed, with "The Spin Crowd" star Jonathan Cheban adding, "Just watching Kim walk down the aisle was probably the best thing ever."

Adele's VMA Performance Is Chiddy Bang's Most-Anticipated

'She probably gonna kill it,' Chiddy Bang's Xaphoon Jones predicts.

LOS ANGELESChiddy Bang won't be performing at this year's big show, but the hip-hop breakout duo got a chance to warm things up alongside Swizz Beatz at the Taco Bell Feed the Beat MTV2 VMA concert on Friday at the Music Box. And when asked which act they were most excited to see at Sunday's Video Music Awards, both group members agreed that Adele tops the list.

"Man, we saw Adele at the Brit Awards in the U.K., which is like the British Grammy Awards, and she just made everyone weep with her strong vocals," the group's MC, Chiddy, told MTV News' Sway.

The other half of Chiddy, producer Xaphoon Jones, also recalled the February awards show, which featured performances by Tinie Tempah, Cee Lo Green, Rihanna and Adele, who sang "Someone Like You," the second single from her wildly successful 21 album.

"Adele just came out there with just a piano, and she was just making obese, grown British men just cry. It was unbelievable," Jones said, before speculating on what the British singer might do at the VMAs. "She probably gonna kill it again."

The "Rolling in the Deep" singer's spirited stage show has provided some unique inspiration for Chiddy Bang. "That's something I aspire to down the road," Xaphoon joked, "I just want to make British dudes cry, pretty much."

Pitbull Brings Miami's Most Beautiful To The VMAs

Miami MC says the dancers in his performance on Sunday night will 'create Pandora's box.'

Pitbull gets pretty demanding on his hit "Give Me Everything,", but for his 2011 VMA performance, Mr. 305 looks to turn the tables and offer fans a taste of Miami.

"I did get the most beautiful women from Miami to come over and create Pandora's box," Pit told MTV News. "So if you're bringing your wife, your girlfriend, boyfriend to the show, you might lose 'em."

MTV News was present at Mr. Worldwide's VMA rehearsal on Thursday at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, and the rapper comes through as promised. Pit and collaborators Ne-Yo and Nayer ran through their number, flanked by approximately 60 curvaceous female dancers.

"We have some backup dancers: one or two or 60," Ne-Yo teased. "And two of the best-dressed men in the business. What more can you ask for?"

Lindsay Lohan's lawsuit hasn't dampened Pit's party plans. The troubled actresses filed suit against the Cuban pop sensation, claiming that his lyrics on "Give Me Everything" were defamatory. But during the run-through, Mr. 305 didn't bite his tongue as he freely rapped the line in question without censoring himself. "I got it locked like Lindsay Lohan," Pit spit.

On Thursday, Pit addressed the suit in a video on his Planet Pit website, inviting La Lohan to join him at the VMAs. "We'll be performing ['Give Me Everything"] at the VMAs and, as a matter of fact, I'd like to send out an invitation to Lindsay Lohan," Pitbull said. "Hopefully she can come with me to the VMAs, and we can figure this out." According to TMZ, however, the actress has declined.

Still, Pit's offer stands. "I said it, I meant it, and if she takes it, great. If she doesn't, cool. But she will have her tickets at will call," he told MTV News.

In the meantime, the show goes on, and if the bilingual hit-maker's practice run is any indication, Pit plans to leave everything he's got on the stage, proving that it's better to give than receive. Que rico!

Katy Perry, Adele To Continue Ladies' VMA Hot Streak?

Video of the Year Moonman has gone to a woman every year since the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.

Every year since 2007, a woman has taken home the Video of the Year Moonman at the MTV Video Music Awards. The ladies really have become the undeniable stars of the category. So, who has won the prize the past four VMAs?

In 2007, Rihanna (featuring Jay-Z) won it for "Umbrella." A year later, in 2008, Britney Spears dominated with "Piece of Me." Beyoncé took it in 2009 for her anthem "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)," and Lady Gaga (and her meat dress) won it last year, 2010, for her "Bad Romance" video. Sunday night, will a woman once again take home the ultimate Moonman for Video of the Year?

Well, there's a 40 percent chance, mathematically, that a female artist will win the prize. Two of the five nominees are women: Adele ("Rolling in the Deep") and Katy Perry ("Firework") face off against the Beastie Boys, Bruno Mars and Tyler, the Creator. Will the ladies cancel each other out, or will one of them rise victorious?

"I think it has to be a lady this year, as in my mind, it's a two-person race between Katy Perry and Adele," Entertainment Weekly staff writer Kyle Anderson told MTV News. "The former because it seems like an appropriate culmination to an unprecedented chart-ruling year, and the latter because it's a feel-good story of quality and skill triumphing over glitz and artificiality."

While Anderson notes it could go either way regarding Adele and Perry, celeb blogger Perez Hilton had a more definite idea who will win. "The women continue their hot streak. Without a doubt, the winner is going to be Adele," he predicted. "This is her year. She's been the critical darling and has also been embraced by the masses in a way we haven't seen in a really long time. She's actually selling albums, week after week, and lots of them. She deserves to win every single award she's nominated for."

Anderson added that the performances scheduled for the night are a major indication that a lady will win. "Either way, it's going to be five straight victories for XX chromosomes," he predicted. "And it should also be noted that considering the biggest performers will also be female — Adele, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé — it's going to be an especially lady-friendly show."

So, could any of the men snag the big prize? Perez said: "I do think the Beastie Boys could pull an upset."

Oscar-winner Sofia Coppola and her longtime rocker boyfriend, Thomas Mars, tied the knot Saturday (August 27) in Italy.

Coppola and Mars, frontman for Phoenix, said "I do" at a civil ceremony in the southern Italian hamlet of Bernalda, the hometown of Coppola's grandparents. People.com reported that about 80 people attended the ceremony at a historic building owned by the bride's famous father, director Francis Ford Coppola, who walked her down the aisle.

She was dressed in a lavender gown designed by Azzedine Alaia, and the ceremony was officiated by the town's mayor, Leonardo Chiruzzi.

"Everything went well," Chiruzzi told the Associated Press. "It was simple, calm, in the garden."

Another famous director, George Lucas, was in attendance. After the evening ceremony, the guests feasted on cheeses, figs, salads, pasta, fish, pork and, of course, the family's wine.

The couple announced their engagement in May and have two children: daughters Romy, 4, and Cosima, 15 months.

Earlier this year, Mars said his group was working on the follow-up to their breakout album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

"We're meeting an orchestra," Mars told Pedestrian.tv.

Bassist Deck D'Arcy added: "We're going to record a bunch of percussionists in [Australian beach town] Byron Bay."

"It's a test," Mars explained. "If it works, we'll probably come back and record something that's going to be on the album."

Kreayshawn jokes that she didn't grow up with cable TV, but that didn't stop her from acing an MTV News Video Music Awards quiz.

The Bay Area rapper took part in our mock game show, and even impressed herself with how much she knew about past VMA performances.

She stumbled a bit over the first question — Who closed last year's Video Music Awards? — guessing David Bowie, Eminem and Birdman before coming up with the correct answer: a red-suit-wearing Kanye West.

She also scored correct guesses when she answered which song Britney Spears sang in her debut Video Music Awards performance ("... Baby One More Time") and what Madonna song Katy Perry sang ("Like a Virgin") when she fronted the house band one year.

Sounds like she'll do just fine come Sunday night, when she works the black carpet as a host for MTV.com. Others who've filled this role in past years include Coco Rocha, Christian Siriano and Adrienne Bailon.

"I'm super excited to be the red-carpet host at this year's VMAs," Kreayshawn said. "I can harass celebrities about what they're wearing, what they ate before they got to the carpet, all sorts of funny stuff."

The 21-year-old was featured on Saturday's (August 27) new episode of "When I Was 17" with other VMA Best New Artist nominees Big Sean and Tyler, the Creator.

Ne-Yo is set to take the stage this Sunday at the 2011 Video Music Awards, but he's not going it alone. He'll be up there to assist his pal Pitbull on their hit "Give Me Everything."

Ne-Yo spoke to MTV News at the Nokia Theatre, where the show is set to go live tomorrow night, and he couldn't hide his excitement about getting to take the VMA stage. The video for the song, which also features Nayer and Afrojack, is also up for Best Pop Video and Best Collaboration.

"This is my first time performing at the VMAs, so this is going to be big," he pledged. "This was the show where, before I made it, where I was like, 'When I make it, yeah, I definitely got to do that one.' " He continued, "And I'm here. I'm happy. I'm definitely beyond happy. I'm gonna maintain; very ecstatic to be here." So, what should fans expect?

"We have some backup dancers: one or two or 60," Ne-Yo teased. "And two of the best-dressed men in the business, what more can you ask for?"

While Pitbull and Ne-Yo are certain to make the Nokia their own party central, they're not the only big names on the roster of VMA performers. Lady Gaga, Adele, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and Young the Giant are all set to take the stage as well.

'Tonight Tonight' band tells MTV News it plans to stalk Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga at the big show.

LOS ANGELES -- You always remember your first time. That's why Nashville buzz band Hot Chelle Rae have spent this weekend soaking up every ounce of energy they can from the vortex of awesome surrounding Sunday's 2011 VMAs.

"It feels amazing. We are so stoked to be out here and not watching from the couch this year," said "Tonight Tonight" singer Ryan Follese. "It's gonna be really, really exciting." Asked whom he would like to celeb-stalk at the show, Follese didn't hesitate, picking Nicki Minaj as his obsessive target of choice, based on his hope that she "might have on something insane."

Guitarist Nash Overstreet said he had his sights set on Lady Gaga, but was afraid she might be too dangerous to stalk because it's possible she'd be wearing something "that could kill you."

When they're not plotting who to spy on at the show, Hot Chelle Rae have been busy putting the finishing touches on their new album, which bassist Ian Keaggy said is slated to come out in November. "If you like 'Tonight Tonight,' honestly, then you're going to love the record," Follese said. "There are moments of songs about tense feelings, but for the most part it's an upbeat, really, really fun record."

Drake Responds To Lil Wayne's Jay-Z Dis

'That's a question for Wayne more than me,' Drizzy tells MTV News of apparent jabs on 'It's Good.'
By Rob Markman

LOS ANGELES -- If there is a Lil Wayne/Jay-Z beef brewing, Drake isn't indulging.

Although he is featured on Weezy's "It's Good" -- the leaked Carter IV track that finds Lil Tunechi throwing a subliminal shot in Hov's direction -- Drizzy downplayed any involvement.

"I just got a beat and did a verse over it," Drake told MTV News from the red carpet for the BMI Urban Awards in L.A. on Friday before he accepted the award for Songwriter of the Year. "Whatever any other individual has to say, you have to ask the man himself. I just did what I know how to do. I just got on a record. I heard the beat, did a verse and heard the final product."

On the song, VMA nominee Wayne raps, "Talkin' 'bout Baby money? I got your Baby money/ Kidnap yo' bitch, get that how-much-you-love-your-lady money." To the casual listener, the line doesn't sound like much, but fanatics can connect the lyric directly to Jay-Z's jab on the Throne's "H.A.M."

It all started in 2009 when Cash Money CEO Bryan "Baby" Williams objected to Jay-Z topping MTV News' Hottest MCs list for that year. "I don't think he the number one MC, in no kinda way," Baby said, casting the first stone. "Wayne is the best, he do the most and he make the most money. I don't think no n---a in the business make more money than us."

It took a few years, but Hov returned fire at the top of this year when he and Kanye leaked their first Watch the Throne track, claiming not only that Birdman and Wayne weren't seeing Jay-Z-caliber bucks, but that financially, they couldn't even compare to his wife, Beyoncé. "I'm like, 'Really, half-a-billi?' N---a, really, you got Baby money/ Keep it real with n---as, n---as ain't got my lady money," Jay lyrically retorted.

Wayne hinted at retaliation when he sat down with MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway in March. "Me and my wit, given my wit, I would probably play off of it," Wayne explained. "But I wouldn't make it a competition, because actually, the subject that he's talking about in that line, I can't box with the God. I'd be the first one to tell you that, given my wit, and the type of person that I am, I'd capitalize and I'd play off of it. Yeah, I definitely would."

And he definitely did. But when it comes to Weezy's response, in which he playfully threatened to kidnap Hov's lady and hold her for ransom, Drake didn't feel comfortable speaking for his YM mentor.

"At the end of the day, rap is an individual art," he said. "You express yourself and whatever you wanna say, you say it, so I guess that's a question for Wayne more than me."

In an August 25 interview with Vibe magazine, Wayne cryptically responded to a question about potential fallout form his track. "I know there won't be any repercussions behind what I did," Weezy boldly said. "I know for a fact music is about perception. You can't do anything but perceive what you hear. I know that for a fact. So I can't ever be upset about someone's reaction."

No word on whether Wayne will perform "It's Good" when he touches the VMA main stage on Sunday, but whatever happens, the YMCMB camp is promising a rock-star performance.

What do you think of Lil Wayne and Jay-Z's lyrical beef? Will Hov respond? Tell us in the comments.

Katy Perry's 'Firework': A VMA Cheat Sheet

Leading nominee got serious in the clip about staying true to yourself.
By Gil Kaufman

We all know that Katy Perry's videos are a blast in a glass. But the most-nominated artist at the 2011 VMAs got serious for four minutes this year, and it helped cap a record-breaking run and made for one of the most visually arresting and inspirational clips of the year.

Perry is rolling into Sunday's show with nine nominations, including Video of the Year for "Firework," which is also nominated in the new Best Video With a Message category.

The California Gurl knew she wanted to make a very special clip for her favorite track from the smash Teenage Dream album, so she hooked up with veteran video director Dave Meyers (Pink, Kelly Clarkson, T.I.) on the project. And luckily for her, they were totally on the same page.

Meyers was looking to "play with [her] image a bit ... sort of demystify the candy-colored pop icon that she's become." He said he had to switch gears a bit, though, when the more toned-down "Teenage Dream" video came out. But with a bit of tweaking, he dug deep into the very personal song's message and came up with a new vision that Katy was totally onboard with. "We wanted to articulate the meaning of that song: what it means to be an underdog and have the courage, if you're on the outskirts of society, to be your own person," he said.

Packing off to Budapest, Meyers stationed Perry on the top of a building downtown and cast unknown, real teens in the clip -- which has been viewed more than 226 million times on YouTube -- to tell a variety of stories, from a boy in a physically abusive home to a girl who feels like a stranger in her own skin, a same-sex couple sharing a kiss and a teen suffering from cancer. All the while, Perry urges them to see the beauty inside, as her love, literally, explodes from her chest in a hail of sparks.

In the days leading up to the "Firework" premiere, Perry dedicated the video to the "It Gets Better" campaign, and she was thrilled that in the weeks following its release, the clip took on a life of its own, as a beacon of hope for everyone who's battled bullies or struggled to find themselves.

"I think that's why I wrote it, is because I really believe in people and I believe that people have a spark to be a firework," she told MTV News. "It's just up to them, and a lot of times it's only us that's standing in the way of reaching our goals, fulfilling our destinies, being the best version of who we possibly can be, so that's why I wrote it."

With fireworks bursting from her chest, Katy's call to power inspires the teens to burst with their own multicolored explosions of self-confidence and empowerment, providing a stunning, candy-colored finale in which more than 250 kids light up the sky thanks to their liberation from bad feelings.

VMA Red Carpet History: From Diddy's Yacht To Gaga's Muppet

Posted: 27 Aug 2011 12:07 AM PDT

30 Seconds to Mars, T-Pain,Tokio Hotel and Snoop Dogg have all made for some memorable arrival moments.
By Gil Kaufman

Anyone can pull up to an awards show in a boring old limo. But when artists are cooking up their arrivals for the Video Music Awards, they like to think big. Real big. As in monster trucks, elephants, yachts, DeLoreans and bicycle mobs.

With stars like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Lil Wayne and Bruno Mars on tap to attend this year, the VMA black carpet is sure to be lit up by another cavalcade of jaw-droppers. The stars will be making their grand entrances in the lobby of Los Angeles' towering J.W. Marriott hotel, where they'll be greeted by pre-show correspondent Selena Gomez. And instead of the usual stroll down a red carpet, their journey will include a walk through a musical time portal and a paparazzi photo theater.

Check out photos of the VMAs' most historic arrivals here.

It'll take some work to outdo last year's show, which changed the game by rolling out a pristine stretch of white shag to welcome everyone from Justin Bieber to Drake, Ke$ha (who arrived in a "Back to the Future" DeLorean), Usher and Gaga, who strutted down in a glamorous Alexander McQueen gown along with some gay and lesbian service members.

The upscale Hollywood Hills mansion theme from last year was interrupted, though, by 30 Seconds to Mars, who re-created a scene from their "Kings and Queens" video by arriving with an army of grungy bicyclists.

Lady Gaga began her tradition of getting attention on the carpet, showing up in 2009 at Radio City Music Hall in New York with her pal Kermit the Frog on her arm and wearing a really uncomfortable-looking gilded neck brace.

If you're on the water, it just makes sense to make a liquid arrival, which is exactly what Diddy, Usher and Ricky Martin did in 2004, when the VMAs traveled to Miami and they pulled up to the festivities on luxury yachts. Things were no less ballin' the next year in Miami, when the theme was custom cars and Snoop Dogg rolled up in a 1967 Pontiac Parisienne convertible. Ludacris made his entrance in a bouncing 1975 Pontiac Grandville and Green Day piled into a beat-up '68 Mercury Monterey. 50 Cent and G-Unit opted for a giant customized bus that year, while My Chemical Romance put safety first by hunkering down in an armored truck.

But it was 2008 when lame limo arrivals were put to shame at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles. Tokio Hotel pulled up in a giant monster truck; Young Jeezy appeared in a presidential motorcade; Fall Out Boy got regal in a horse and carriage; T-Pain rode in on an elephant and Paramore went green in their smart cars.
