Long before Lady Gaga headed to Nebraska to shoot her "Yoü and I" video — which premieres Thursday at 7:49 p.m. ET/PT on MTV and Logo during "MTV First: Lady Gaga" — she hooked up with super-producer Mutt Lange and Queen guitarist Brian May to create the fourth single from Born This Way.

The song is about reconnecting with a great love — reportedly Gaga's bartender beau Luc Carl. Although the final Lange-produced version appears on the album, Gaga first premiered "Yoü and I" back in June 2010 at Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball. She had been dazzling fans with the acoustic version of the song on the Monster Ball Tour until the official version dropped this past May.

"She recorded a vocal backstage [on tour], because there was no time to fly anybody out anymore," Born This Way musical director Fernando Garibay recalled to MTV News. "It was the last round. She recorded it backstage, the vocal and the piano, and gave it to Mutt Lange. Her and Mutt Lange traded notes, and I just made sure that everything stayed intact."

Gaga traditionally has worked with up-and-coming producers like Garibay, RedOne and DJ White Shadow, but for the deeply personal track, she wanted a musical master like Lange, who has worked with everyone from Shania Twain and Maroon 5 to Def Leppard and AC/DC.

What might happen in the highly anticipated "Yoü and I" video? Here are some guesses ...

"Mutt Lange's a legend since the '80s, [and he's] been having huge songs," Garibay said. "Here you have such a legend and you have Gaga, [and] Gaga records the vocal herself and then gives it to Mutt and he does his stuff to the track, to the song, but kept it in her vision. It's pretty spectacular."

Don't miss the premiere of the "Yoü and I" video during "MTV First: Lady Gaga," Thursday night at 7:49 p.m. ET on MTV and Logo, followed by a live Q&A with Gaga and her fans on MTV.com. Tweet your questions for the Mother Monster with the hashtag #MTVGaga.

Waka Flocka Flame Explains Retirement Talk

'Yeah, I'm gonna retire — from the industry,' Waka says on 'RapFix Live.'

Jay-Z famously said that he would retire after he dropped his debut album Reasonable Doubt way back in 1996, and we all saw how that worked out. With only one solo album under his belt, could Waka Flocka Flame do what Jigga couldn't?

Last month, the "Hard in Da Paint" rapper tweeted "This game 2 fake I [quit] rap after this year," but when Sway asked Waka about his post-rap plans, he elaborated on the statement.

"Nah, I am gonna retire. I'm gonna retire from the industry," Waka said on last week's "RapFix Live." "I'm not gonna kick it in the industry no more. I'm gonna do what I wanna do, how I started like from the beginning. I'm gonna do exactly what I wanna do."

Flocka didn't exactly say that he'd quit making music, however. Instead, the Atlanta-based rapper said he would go on to operate outside the music industry's traditional avenues.

"I don't expect to win awards, I don't expect to go to big venues. I'm gonna really help the youth — this is what I started doin' it for, so I'm gonna finish doin' it," he said. "Yeah, I'm gonna retire — from the industry."

For now, though, fans can tide themselves over with Ferrari Boyz, Waka's joint album with mentor Gucci Mane, which dropped last Tuesday. "Man, we just came to smash the game — point blank, period," Waka told Sway when asked why the duo made Ferrari Boyz. "They chasin' our sound, folks' singles is on our sound, and we might as well just go 'head and give it all to 'em."

Do you think Waka Flocka Flame can make it on his own terms? Let us know in the comments!

Pill Aims To Cure Rap's Ills With <i>Diagnosis</i> Mixtape

Mixtape: The Diagnosis

Real Spit: Pill has already proven he's sicker than the average MC. After causing a stir with his pair of breakout 2009 mixtapes 4180: The Prescription and 4075: The Refill, the Atlanta rap rookie garnered all sorts of attention that would boil over when he appeared on the cover of XXL magazine's 2010 Freshmen cover.

Pill followed up with 1140: The Overdose and then made a power move earlier this year when he signed with Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group and appeared on the label's Self Made Vol. 1 compilation.

Pill's latest mixtape, The Diagnosis, is anchored by the hustle-focused, basketball-inspired single "Scottie Pippen, Tim Duncan," on which he linked with DJ Scream to tell tales from the bottom. On "Send One Down," Pill worked with Trae Tha Truth for a God-calling mellow tune.

When it comes to Young Pillionaire's music, it isn't necessarily thugging for the sake of thugging; more often than not, there is a message behind the bullying bars. If judged by the title alone, one would think that "New Clothes and New Shoes" would be filled with empty rap rhetoric and boasts of overpriced diamonds and exaggerated shopping sprees. Pill goes another route: Instead of glorifying his drug sales, he explains the reason behind his hustle. On "One of These Days," the rapper ponders his dreams, wondering when they will actually come true.

With The Diagnosis, it seems that Young Pill is that much closer to realizing his dreams.

Joint to Check For
» "Scottie Pippen, Tim Duncan" — " 'Scottie Pippen, Tim Duncan,' that's kinda like a 'Trap Goin Ham' — me basically lettin' y'all know what's goin' on in the trap. It's off the backboard, 'Scottie Pippen, Tim Duncan'; it be so hard it's off the backboard, ya feel me? It's just basically an ode to the trappers and an ode to the streets and some real hustler music that they can relate to, because that's where I came from and I can't stray away from it."

Lady Gaga has some news for all her Little Monsters. The Mother Monster herself will sit down with MTV News and Sway Calloway on Thursday night (August 18) during "MTV First: Lady Gaga" to premiere her highly anticipated music video for "Yoü and I." And during her live interview, she's also set to make another big announcement.

After the video premieres at 7:49 p.m. ET on MTV and Logo, it will appear on mtvU, MTV Hits and Tr3s at 8 p.m. on Thursday. And immediately following the on-air portion, Gaga's interview and fan Q&A will stream live on MTV.com.

Want to get in on the fun? Submit questions beginning Monday (August 15) via Twitter using the hashtag #MTVGaga.

"Yoü and I" is the fourth video off of Gaga's chart-topping Born This Way. She's already dazzled fans with high-concept clips for "Born This Way" and "Judas" and then kicked it more lo-fi and old school in her video for "The Edge of Glory," which co-starred the late Clarence Clemons.

Gaga promised fans that she'll post a link to the video as her 1,000th tweet. So far she's posted several hints about the video as she approaches that number. Tweet #993 reads, "Love is a Result. We bare an Unbearable Human Inability: to just 'be.' " It also features a photo of a woman, presumably Gaga, in a white dress, sitting at a piano in the woods. Her next two tweets hinted that the premiere would take place in "Less than a week" and then the accompanying photo was of dirty feet in high-heeled platforms.

Last week Gaga tweeted out single artwork for "Yoü and I," which featured her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone. Gaga previously teased that the video would include another one of her alter egos, that of her mermaid incarnation, Yuyi.

Gaga shot the video in Nebraska last month and explained that it is about taking a journey to win back the one you love. "The [video is about the] idea that when you're away from someone you love, it's torture," she said. "I knew I wanted the video to be about me sprinting back and walking hundreds of thousands of miles to get him back."

Tiesto To Be Featured On Max Vangeli Podcast

Steve Angello's Size Records will release Vangeli and AN21's album, including single 'People of the Night.'
By Akshay Bhansali

House-music producing partners Max Vangeli and AN21 ascended the ranks in the dance music world through notable remixes and a knack for the blockbuster DJ swagger required to captivate thousands of people with a pair of decks at any given time. And while renditions of Ellie Goulding's "Starry Eyed" and Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up" remain in their arsenal, the duo are on the precipice of new material, set to be unleashed by a mammoth single bearing co-production by a titanic name.

"People of the Night," which the BBC's Pete Tong debuted about a month ago, is anthemic and features a soothing vocal by Eleanor Bodenham from the band Lover Lover, a blessing delivered by the track's production partner, dance music legend Tiësto.

"We met Tijs [Verwest, a.k.a. Tiësto] in Stockholm, and we talked about doing some kind of work together," San Francisco-based Vangeli shared with MTV News recently. "And when we were in L.A. with AN21 at Steve [Angello]'s studio, we came up with this initial idea, and we just sent it over to Tijs, and he loved it right away.

"He brought the vocals. It was a track that didn't have to be forced, to be honest with you," Vangeli continued. "The vocals, we did one take, literally. We didn't re-record or anything. And here we are with a track with Tiësto. It turned out phat!"

AN21 said, "The response we got from 'People of the Night' is 100 percent. I've never seen this much response every day on the Internet. It's like, '100 new mentions; 100 new mentions.' And that's an amazing feeling."

To get a sense of just how big Max and AN21 have become, one need only note that earlier this month, they subbed in for Eric Prydz at Amnesia in Ibiza, Spain, only to have Tiësto and Swedish House Mafia's Sebastian Ingrosso join in — four superstar DJs going track for track over the course of their whole set.

And now it would seem the top echelon of stardom is in sight. Together with blockbuster house music producer and SHM member Steve Angello, who is overseeing their project, Max and AN21 will be releasing their first album through Interscope and Angello's Size Records.

"We have a concept — a very cool concept," Max said. "We are waiting for a few more vocals to be complete. We have like 20 songs, but we are going to cut it down."

AN21 revealed: "It's pretty much done, to be honest with you: 85 percent."

Max added, "We are still finalizing things, but we've done work with [British singer] Example (a song titled "Whisper"). We're doing one song with Steve [Angello], obviously, on the album. And I can pretty much say that we are working on one with Dirty South and Kim Fai. Did one with Moguai, as well."

"People of the Night" will be dropping soon, and AN21 and Max Vangeli said they hope to put out their album by the end of the year and definitely before Winter Music Conference 2012. Until then, fans can get a healthy dose of what's to come starting Tuesday: Max will be putting out the next edition in his podcast series, which has already featured the likes of Kaskade and Roger Sanchez.

Of course, it's only fitting given their latest single that Max will be featuring a special guest: Tiësto. Just what will go down when Tijs "The Tank" comes through? You'll have to check out the podcast Tuesday to find out.

'Dark Knight Rises': Batwing First Look!

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 09:36 AM PDT

Photos from the Pittsburgh set continue to reveal new bits of the Christopher Nolan flick.
By Eric Ditzian

The Batwing on the set of "Dark Knight Rises"

Ultra-secretive "Dark Knight Rises" director Christopher Nolan has met his match in the city of Pittsburgh. The filmmaker is famous for keeping his actors on spoiler-dishing lockdown, with "Inception" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt once telling us how his boss "very specifically asked [him] not to talk about" the mind-bending thriller and Anne Hathaway joking about taking a blood oath not to reveal anything about her role of Catwoman.

Check out photos of the Batwing on the set of "Dark Knight Rises"!

But as "Rises" continues to shoot on location in Pittsburgh, almost every day brings a fresh batch of spoiler-filled photos and videos about the comic-book flick. The latest is the first glimpse of what appears to be the Batwing, the Caped Crusader's signature aircraft.

The aircraft appears to utilize fan-driven engines and be made of a series of interlocking plates, indicating that the ship may have some sort of shape-shifting quality. Such a transformational vehicle wouldn't be out of place in Nolan's Gotham City; in the "Dark Knight," part of Batman's Tumbler turned out to contain a hidden Batpod. A YouTube video from set shows the Batwing being driven down a street during the shoot, its massive body gyrating back and forth, a Batman dummy placed in the cockpit.

In his many comic book, TV and film incarnations, Batman has long had an aerial vehicle. Tim Burton, in 1989's "Batman," introduced the idea of (and the name for) the Batwing. Nolan thus far has not delivered anything of the sort. "Dark Knight Rises," however, seems to be utilizing a slew of vehicles for the film, from a bunch of camouflaged Tumblers to Hathaway's Catwoman on the Batpod itself to this new aircraft.

And while we know far more at this point about "Dark Knight Rises" than we ever could have expected, and certainly more than Nolan would likely prefer, there remains much we don't know. Even what we have seen, Hathaway let MTV News know, doesn't give everything away.

"What I am happy to say is: If you didn't like the photo," she said of the first look at her in character as Catwoman, "you only see about a 10th of what that suit can do."

Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."

Mac Miller Rounds Out MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5

Who is Mac Miller? Hip-hop's next rising star has an answer for the uninitiated: "He's a 19-year old rap phenomenon from Pittsburgh who enjoys life and enjoys making music every day and working very hard for everything he gets."

Well, all that hard work has paid off. Miller has been named one of MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5 artists.

Conceived in 2005 on MTV Jams, the Fab 5 is a collection of the most outstanding new hip-hop artists of the year who have made a visible impact on the road to releasing their debut albums. Fab 5 alumni include Juelz Santana, Tony Yayo, Paul Wall, Young Jeezy, Kid Cudi and Drake.

This year, MTV Jams, MTV News and Sucker Free will bring you 2011's hottest new hip-hop upstarts, including Big Sean, Future, Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T. and now Mac Miller.

The Pittsburgh MC toiled in the local underground, releasing mixtapes under the name Easy Mac until he signed with Rostrum Records and broke out with his 2010 tape K.I.D.S. (Kickin' Incredibly Dope Sh--). "My grandpa started calling me Mac when I was born, so it stuck. It's cool; my grandpa was a huge Mack Maine fan," the rapper joked about his name change.

K.I.D.S.was led by the Lord Finesse-sampling "Kool-Aid and Frozen Pizza," which quickly became a fan favorite and helped grow Miller's faithful following. "Kool-Aid" alone has since registered 13.2 million views on YouTube, and TreeJTV — the YouTube channel Mac uploads all his footage to — has more than 111 million total views.

From there, Mac landed a spot on XXL magazine's 2011 freshmen cover in April and dropped his K.I.D.S. follow-up Best Day Ever, which in turn led to a national tour.

Mac is now putting the finishing touches on his independent debut album Blue Slide Park. "Blue Slide Park is a park in Pittsburgh we grew up at," Miller told MTV News of the album's title. "Being 2, going down slides, and then being 6, playing Little League and hanging out there, then being older coming back there to drink and smoke and party, running from the cops. And now going back there just to chill out and drink a beer."

Tune in to "RapFix Live" on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET to see a recap of all of MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5 inductees: Big Sean, Future, Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T. and Mac Miller.

'Glee': Five Reasons '3D Concert' Sunk At The Box Office

We take a closer look at flick's disappointing 11th-place debut.
By Eric Ditzian

All is not well with the crooning kids of New Directions. "Glee: The 3D Concert Movie" sunk at the multiplex this weekend, roping in just $5.7 million and landing in 11th place at the box office.

So what happened? The film starred show faves Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer, notched an A-plus CinemaScore from moviegoers under 25, and was coming off a "Glee" season that averaged more than 10 million viewers. MTV News consulted with a few industry insiders about the movie's opening and came up with five reasons to explain the box-office blunder:

The Demo
Successful 3-D concert films from Hannah Montana and Justin Bieber had one thing in common: a tween-centric audience. But as Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, points out, that's simply not the case with "Glee." "True fans of the TV series aren't just teens," he said. "The majority of fans are adults, and they certainly aren't the demographic that will run out to see a concert film, especially one that is in 3-D. Besides, Gleeks most likely went to see the live performances that the film is based on."

Bock argues that, for "Glee," the more accurate comparison is not Bieber's "Never Say Never" but "U2 3D." That film, he said, is the only other 3-D concert doc not geared toward a younger audience. "Despite U2 being one of the most popular bands on earth, that film barely scratched $10 million," he added.

The Marketing
"Glee" not only suffered from having a core audience unfriendly to 3-D concert docs, but its marketing campaign failed to attract new eyeballs. According to Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo, "In its marketing, 'Glee' was strictly for the hard-core Gleeks, as it came off as redundant and self-congratulatory to more casual watchers who can see the television series for free. Despite the show's hype, only around an estimated 500,000 tickets were sold for the movie."

Even Fox TV execs reportedly weren't pleased with the marketing effort, with an unnamed source from that department telling Deadline, "I think it was a sh---y campaign that did not effectively communicate what the movie was or that the people who had seen it reviewed it positively. I think the feature company took a very laid-back approach, feeling their only job was to alert the core fans, and that's not enough to fill seats."

"The Help"
Even if the marketing campaign had been stronger, "Glee" still had to battle at the box office with "The Help," Emma Stone's segregation-era drama (which opened with $25.5 million). The concert film came out on the losing end. "It's quite obvious that 'The Help' came along and scooped up the attention of a huge section of female moviegoers," said Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com. "When you have a film that over-performs like 'The Help,' it causes a ripple effect, and 'Glee' felt the brunt of it."

The 3-D
So there were problems with demographics, marketing and a crowded multiplex. But let's not forget the public has become less receptive to 3-D in general, often choosing to go the cheaper 2-D route if the movie at hand doesn't feel like a must-see-in-3-D event. As successful as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" was, for example, a majority of audiences still opted for 2-D screenings over opening weekend. For "Glee," the public had no such option. "Overall excitement was not too high, and the lack of a regular-priced 2-D option prompted cash-strapped teens to skip the film," wrote Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru.

The Overexposure
Finally, "Glee" found itself not only fighting external competition, but itself. Perhaps there's just a little too much "Glee" going on at the moment. "Kids can watch the real 'Glee' for free on Fox and faux 'The Glee Project' on Oxygen, so why spend their milk money on a movie ticket?" wrote Nikki Finke at Deadline. "And maybe 'Glee' is just over-exposed right now and not as cool as it was initially."

Jay-Z Explains <i>Watch The Throne</i> Title

Jay-Z continues to promote his and Kanye West's Watch the Throne album. While his partner Yeezy was overseas in Sweden performing with Prince at the Way Out West festival this weekend, Hov held it down at home, beginning with the opening on Friday of the WTT pop-up store in New York City. He also dialed in to Miami's 99 Jamz for a radio interview, and Monday morning (August 15) it was announced that the God MC would join Bruno Mars, Black Eyed Peas and David Guetta as part of the iHeartRadio Festival on September 23 and 24 in Las Vegas.

On Friday night, after news of the surprise retail space broke, Jigga, along with Beyoncé, Swizz Beatz and producer Just Blaze, threw a party at the makeshift store, where the retooled Maybach from the Throne's "Otis" video was also on display.

See what car expert Myles Kovacs estimates the "Otis" Maybach's work cost.

Hov also called in to Miami's 99 Jamz radio show host Lorenzo "Ice Tea" Thomas for only his second interview in promotion of WTT. In the interview, Jay explained the Throne's album title:

"It's just protecting the music and the culture. It's people that's in the forefront of music, it's like Watch the Throne, protect it. You just watch how popular music shifts and how hip-hop has basically replaced rock and roll as the youth music. The same thing could happen to hip-hop, it could be replaced by other forms of music. So it's just making sure that we put that effort into making the best product so we can contend with all this other music, with all the dance music that's dominating the charts right now and indie music that's dominating the festivals and still hold off rock 'n' roll. Just to hold our place and make sure that the hip-hop culture is still the most dominant form of music around the world."

Read what critics have to say about Watch the Throne.

On Sunday, Jigga took the celebration to Miami's Club LIV, and on Monday, it was announced that Jay would take part the iHeartRadio music festival. It is unclear whether Kanye will join his Throne partner for the festival.

Game's Tweet 'Interfered' With Police, Sheriff's Department Says

Rapper claims a friend accidentally sent tweet of department phone numbers, resulting in 'overwhelmed' lines.

It's no secret that Game has an itchy Twitter finger, and now a tweet from his account has landed him in hot water with the police. After a message appeared on the West Coast rapper's Twitter asking aspiring interns to call the sheriff's station in Compton, the station's phone lines were flooded with calls. The resulting calls reportedly caused a delay in emergency services, including a missing person report, a spousal assault incident, two robberies and a stolen car incident. Now the sheriff's department is looking to hit the rapper up with a series of charges.

A press release issued to MTV News by the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department said that the phone calls started at about 5:23 p.m. PT on Friday (August 12) and didn't subside until a few hours later, at 8.

"These needless phone calls interfered with the ability of sheriff's desk personnel to answer the business line phones and 9-1-1 calls, and for dispatchers to send help to people who really needed it," said Captain Mike Parker of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. "We don't know how many people needed help but couldn't get through the overwhelmed phone lines."

Parker tweeted the Game directly, alerting him that his initial call-out was jeopardizing public safety. Game, however, told TMZ.com that he wasn't responsible for the tweet, and that a friend accidently sent the message from the rapper's phone while he was at a photo shoot on Friday.

The sheriff's department is now presenting their case to the district attorney's office in consideration of a criminal filing of three charges including annoying or harassing phone calls via electronic device or Internet, delaying or obstructing peace officers in the performance of their duties, and knowingly and maliciously disrupting or impeding communications over a public safety radio frequency.

MTV News reached out to Game's publicist regarding these reports and is still awaiting a response.

Lady Gaga's latest creative endeavor, a partnership with Barneys New York, can't be surprising to anyone who knows about her love for fashion, but its focus might be a bit out of left field. Gaga and the department store are teaming up for a holiday campaign called "Gaga's Workshop."

With the creative assistance of Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide Pierson of Assume Vivid Astro Focus, and Mugler creative director and Lady Gaga fashion director Nicola Formichetti, Barneys will re-imagine Santa's workshop through the lens of Lady Gaga. Beginning in mid-November, he Madison Avenue flagship location's Men's Store and legendary window display will be transformed by the project.

"Lady Gaga is a rare cultural phenomenon, not only because of her exceptional talents as a singer, songwriter and performer, but also with regard to her support of equality and individuality and status as a fashion icon," Mark Lee, Barneys New York CEO, said in a statement about the collaboration. "Partnering with her in this unprecedented collaborative way to create the largest and most all-encompassing holiday theme that Barneys has ever mounted is a thrill. As a New York City landmark, we wanted to celebrate Lady Gaga as a fellow New Yorker and amazing talent."

Not enough Gaga for you? Formichetti will also be working with Barneys to create some gifts that can be purchased there, and 25 percent of their sales will go to a charity of Gaga's choice.

The cartoon artwork associated with the holiday event features the singer lying down in a gold-studded red bodysuit, surrounded by her floating turquoise hair.

Johnny Depp's 'Lone Ranger': Why Disney Shut It Down

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 08:38 AM PDT

Poor performance of 'Cowboys & Aliens' may have influenced studio.
By Eric Ditzian

As cinematic collaborators go, there are few in Hollywood who can match the storytelling cred and box-office clout of Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski. The duo has delivered a trifecta of "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, taking the property from hokey amusement-park ride to multibillion-dollar franchise juggernaut.

Last fall, well before their kooky, captivating animated adventure "Rango" opened to $38.1 million domestically, Depp and Verbinski announced their next live-action collaboration would be "The Lone Ranger," a project Depp and Disney had been trying to get off the ground for years.

Now, quite surprisingly, Disney has shut down the production amidst concerns about a Western-themed film with a budget north of $200 million. Deadline reported the development on Friday, and the Los Angeles Times followed up on Monday (August 15) with further details about the stoppage. The Times reports the "Lone Ranger" budget could have ballooned to $250 million at a time when studios are looking to keep costs under control, even as a heavily reliance on CG effects drives those costs up.

"It's our intention to take a very careful look at what films cost," Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Bob Iger said on a conference call with analysts on Tuesday, according to the Times. "And if we can't get them to a level that we're comfortable with, we think that we're better off actually reducing the size of our slate than making films that are bigger and increasingly more risky."

But there's also little doubt that Disney was influenced by the performance of "Cowboys & Aliens," a Western that faltered at the box office this summer despite A-list talent in front of and behind the camera. After the expensive, Harrison Ford-starring action flick opened to just $36.2 million during its first weekend, industry insiders fully anticipated that studios would shy away from the genre. "There is no getting around the fact that the Western-sci-fi genre mashup has been a terrible failure in Hollywood," Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, told MTV News at the time. "Expect studios to stay far away from this genre in the near future."

Not even Depp and Verbinski — and their long-standing relationship with Disney — were immune to Hollywood's growing understanding that big-budget Westerns just aren't resonating with moviegoers. The move means that unless a new approach (and a new budget) can be worked out, Depp won't get to bring Tonto, the Lone Ranger's dutiful sidekick, to the screen, despite years of involvement with the project. Armie Hammer, of "Social Network" fame, was set to play the Lone Ranger himself.

"This is the origin of Lone Ranger," producer Jerry Bruckheimer told MTV News in March 2010, "so you're gonna see how the Lone Ranger became the Lone Ranger. He was a Texas Ranger, and how he became the Lone Ranger."

Are the chances that audiences get to see that origin story in theaters totally dead? The Times floats an optimistic note, citing other projects shut down because of high costs, like Denzel Washington's "Unstoppable," that were resurrected at the last minute. For now, though, it seems more likely Depp would reprise his "Pirates" role of Jack Sparrow than step into Tonto's boots — though even a fifth seafaring adventure is uncertain at this point.

"It boils down to story, script and filmmaker," Depp said earlier this year about "Pirates 5." "It's not something where I would say, 'Let's shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012.' We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me."

Mike Myers 'Interested' In 'Austin Powers' Sequel

Reports that Myers had signed a deal for the follow-up to 'Goldmember' are contradicted by Deadline New York.

Oh behave, "Austin Powers" fans, because a sequel might not be in the works just yet.

News broke over the weekend that Mike Myers was "signed, sealed, delivered" for "Austin Powers 4," the long-awaited follow-up to 2002's "Goldmember." HitFix confirmed that Myers had signed a deal to return to the franchise, but now Deadline New York is reporting otherwise. The entertainment website is saying that, despite Myers' interest in the project, no deal has been signed yet.

Apparently all that's happened is that Myers has expressed interest in a proposal for the movie that New Line presented six months ago, and it's not a full-blown deal. The project had seemingly fallen by the wayside after Myers' 2008 flick "The Love Guru" tanked at the box office, and he disappeared from Hollywood (barring a brief appearance in "Inglourious Basterds"). But New Line sought to revitalize the project recently and sent out a new offer about six months ago. Deadline is reporting that Myers' representatives have finally responded that Myers is interested.

There's no word yet on whether Myers' writing partner Michael McCullers will be back for the fourth installment. "Austin Powers" director Jay Roach also has not been announced for the upcoming flick. In fact, there's no confirmation that a script has even been written, though New Line commissioned one in 2008 and Myers has frequently said that it's a work in progress. But this news definitely seems to inspire hope that an "Austin Powers 4" deal is on its way at some point soon.

The last MTV News heard about the project was at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival. Only a month earlier, Roach told MTV News that Myers was working on ideas for the script, though it wasn't completed yet. Myers later echoed that while promoting "Shrek Forever After" at Tribeca.

"Things are on track. It's hard to keep a Stanley Cup team together and I'm very happy how insanely well it's gone. Then it gets hard to get everybody all together. It's chugging along," Myers said. "I'd be very happy to do it in 7-D. I can't tell you exactly how it works. Actually, I left the plans for it in a bar and somebody saw it. But it's very exciting."

No word on "7-D" in either the Deadline or the HitFix reports, but fans of the franchise can rest easy knowing that it seems like an "Austin Powers 4" will likely hit theaters over the next few years. All together now: Sake it to me, baby!

A memorial is planned on Monday (August 15) for the five people who were killed on Saturday night when a stage collapsed at a Sugarland concert at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis. According to the event's official website, the fair will reopen on Monday with Governor Mitch Daniels in attendance at the memorial service.

The memorial is set to take place at the Free Stage; the website also laid out plans for the remainder of events during the Indiana State Fair. The Chicago Tribune reports strong wind gusts may have contributed to the stage's collapse at the show, which was attended by upwards of 12,000 people. USA Today reports that a severe thunderstorm warning had been issued in the hours leading up to the concert.

In addition to the five who died, four dozen people were injured in the incident, which took place before the headliners took the stage. Sugarland are currently on tour with Sara Bareilles. "The accident at the Indiana State Fair felt like a bad dream," Bareilles wrote on her site. "The weather changed in a matter of minutes and the stage collapsed in a matter of seconds."

Sugarland's frontwoman, Jennifer Nettles, released a lengthy statement on the band's official site about the incident. "I am so moved. Moved by the grief of those families who lost loved ones. Moved by the pain of those who were injured and the fear of their families. Moved by the great heroism as I watched so many brave Indianapolis fans actually run toward the stage to try and help lift and rescue those injured. Moved by the quickness and organization of the emergency workers who set up the triage and tended to the injured," she wrote. "There are no words to process a moment of this magnitude and gravity. There are only prayers for peace in the hearts of the bereft, and prayers of thanksgiving for those who were spared or safe. A piece of our heart is left in that grandstand. May God provide peace and healing to the people of Indianapolis."

The statement continued, "We wish to pass along our most sincere thanks for the messages of love, prayer and support from our fan family. We'll post any further updates here as they become available."

Honor has a baby sister. Jessica Alba announced on Facebook that she had given birth to her second child, a girl, on Saturday.

"Hope you're enjoying the weekend," she wrote. "Cash and I are so excited to announce the birth of our daughter, Haven Garner Warren. She was born on Saturday, weighed 7 lbs, and was 19 inches long. Healthy and happy! Big Sister Honor couldn't be more excited about the new addition to our family. Thank you for all of your support during my pregnancy. It means the world to me."

Back in February, Alba announced her pregnancy in a similar way, sharing with her fans that she and her husband, Cash Warren, were expanding their family. The couple married in 2008. Their other daughter, Honor, is 3.

Alba is playing a mom on the big screen this week in Robert Rodriguez's latest installment in the "Spy Kids" franchise, "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World 4D." She appeared at the film's Los Angeles premiere on July 31 and has been making the rounds promoting the film, which opens this weekend.

Hollywood's mini-baby boom continued when "30 Rock" star Tina Fey announced over the weekend that she had given birth to her second child, Penelope Athena Richmond, last Wednesday, according to People.com. It's her second daughter with her composer husband, Jeffrey Richmond. The couple has a 5-year-old daughter named Alice. Fey announced her big baby news on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in April.

"My husband and I really decided that we felt rather than risk having '30 Rock' end in several years and feeling like part of our family is missing that we were going to prioritize our family," she said of the decision to have another baby.

On Sunday, Hilary Duff and her hockey-player hubby, Mike Comrie, celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary. But they had even bigger news for their fans over the weekend. Duff announced on her official website that they are expecting their first child.

"Hello everyone! This weekend, Mike and I are celebrating our 1 year anniversary! In memory of the special day, we decided to post some of our favorite pictures from our wedding!" the 23-year-old wrote. "I can't believe it has already been a year, time really flies when you're having fun! We also want to share the exciting news that ...... BABY MAKES THREE!!!"

She added, "We are extremely happy and ready to start this new chapter of our lives. Thanks to everyone for the continued love and support throughout the years! Wow! I am just overwhelmed by all of the wonderful messages everyone is sending! Thank you so much! Big hugs! Xxo"

Duff, who rose to fame on the Disney Channel playing Lizzie McGuire, has gone on to become a Hollywood mogul. She met the Edmonton Oilers star in 2009. "[Comrie's] a great guy. I've never met anyone who could say a bad word about him. He's generous, caring, funny. We just laugh our heads off, which I need in my life," Duff has said of her husband. "He's unique. I wouldn't want to be with someone who wasn't unique."

Days before she officially announced she was expecting, she spoke to Usmagazine.com about having kids with Comrie, telling the website, "We both love kids and we're really excited. It was a big deal for us because we had a year to be married."

Send your congrats on Facebook!

'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' Holds Up Against 'The Help'

'30 Minutes or Less,' 'Glee: The 3D Concert Movie,' 'Final Destination 5' disappoint at box office.

Not only did the apes begin to conquer the human world onscreen, but they managed to retain their top spot at the box office as well. Despite competition from four diverse new movies, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" remained the #1 movie in America over the weekend.

The sci-fi prequel took in another $27.5 million during its second weekend of release for a $104.8 million total, according to studio estimates. Starring James Franco, "Rise" is a descendent of 1968's original "Planet of the Apes" which was itself based on Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel of the same name.

Whereas "Apes" was written in the '60s but set in a distant future, "The Help" was written just a couple of years ago but is set in the '60s. The movie adaptation of the hit book about a Southern belle who collects the stories of several African-American maids opened at #2 with $25.5 million, which was much stronger than observers predicted. Perhaps they should have known better: The book, by Kathryn Stockett, was legendarily turned down by some 60 literary agents before becoming a best-seller.

Both of the movies in the top two spots have benefited from positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth, while two of the weekend's big flops — "Final Destination 5" and the heavily promoted "30 Minutes or Less" — suffered from mostly poor reviews, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

"Final Destination 5" was the first flick in the horror movie franchise to open lower than its predecessor, mustering up just $18.4 million to open at #3. Pricier 3-D screenings accounted for roughly 75 percent of the gory sequel's business.

The last time Jessie Eisenberg worked with director Ruben Fleischer was on "Zombieland," which opened to overwhelmingly strong reviews and nearly $25 million two years ago. Their latest collaboration, the comedy "30 Minutes or Less," took in just $13 million over the weekend to open at #5.

With a reported budget of just $28 million, the movie, which stars Eisenberg as a pizza deliveryman who is kidnapped by two low-rent hoods (played by Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) who intend to force him to rob a bank, opened much lower than low-budget R-rated sleeper hit "Bridesmaids" did earlier this summer.

"Glee: The 3D Concert Movie" suffered the worst opening of all of the new major wide releases, coming in at a distant #11 with $5.7 million — even worse than the 3-D Jonas Brothers movie. The budget for the film, featuring the stars of the hit Fox series, was roughly $9 million. Another movie about a group of singing friends, "The Smurfs," was #4 with $13.5 million. The live-action/animated mix has made $101.5 million since it opened three weeks ago.

This weekend's new releases include franchise reboot "Conan the Barbarian," which sees Jason Momoa taking over from Arnold Schwarzenegger; "Fright Night," a remake of the 1985 vampire-moves-in-next-door horror romp; Anne Hathaway's romantic "One Day"; and the latest installment of Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids" series, "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D," which will screen in what producers are calling "Aromascope Smellovision."

Check out everything we've got on "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."
