Pitbull: Lindsay Lohan's VMA Tickets Are At Will Call

'I'm actually surprised and, in an ironic way, kind of honored,' Pit says of actress suing him over 'Give Me Everything.'

Pitbull made headlines when he invited Lindsay Lohan — currently suing him over the lyrics to his hit "Give Me Everything" — to Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, where Pit will be performing the song with Ne-Yo and Nayer.

"We'll be performing at the VMAs, and as a matter of fact, I'd like to send out an invitation to Lindsay Lohan," he said in a statement on his Planet Pit website. "Hopefully, she can come with me to the VMAs, and we can figure this out."

Of course, with the big show just around the corner, Lohan has yet to publicly RSVP, so when MTV News caught up with Pit during rehearsals for the VMAs, we had to ask if he'd heard from the actress. Lohan specifically took issue with the line "Got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan," which Pit actually saw as a positive lyric.

"As far as the whole Lindsay Lohan situation, it's real simple: I'm actually surprised and, in an ironic way, kind of honored. The record, if you listen to it from beginning to end, [is a] very positive record. I start off even talking about my own life," he said. "So in no way, shape or form am I here to defame, degrade or hurt anybody. It was my way of showing love or helping out, I would think.

"But either [way], I said, 'You know what? Performing it at the VMAs, [I] would like to invite her out,' " he continued. "And anybody who knows my reputation [knows I] don't do no publicity stunts. I'm not really about none of that. ... So I said it, I meant it, and if she takes it, great. If she doesn't, cool. But she will have her tickets at will call."

Pitbull didn't stop there: If (or when) Lohan picks up her tickets, he hopes she'll join him onstage for his performance of "Everything." Maybe she could even rap the offending line.

"That would be great, to be honest with you," he laughed. "That might just throw Lindsay Lohan through the roof. People would love her if she did that! But then again, that's just my two cents on her PR team and what they should be doing."

Tyler, The Creator Recalls His First Performance, On 'When I Was 17'

Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator talks about his achievements on "When I Was 17."

This week's new episode of "When I Was 17," airing Saturday (August 27) at 11 a.m., is all about three outspoken rising stars in the hip-hop and rap communities who also happen to be VMA Best New Artist nominees. The most outspoken and unpredictable of the three is Odd Future standout Tyler, the Creator, who revealed that his 17th year featured two career-making moments, the release of his album and his first-ever "concert" performance.

"When I was 17, I released The Odd Future Tape. That was my first album as a collective," Tyler said, adding that the release led to the group's first-ever performance.

"My first performance was a talent show. I didn't set us up for it, Hodgy did," he recalled. "I was really excited because I'd never performed before."

Evidently, Tyler went all out during the show and at one point ended up dropping his pants for a not-so-receptive crowd.

"I was jumping around, pulled my pants down. During parts of the songs, I would go in the crowd and just wild out and go crazy," he said. "The guy who put it together, his mom and other family members were in the front. I didn't know that they were heavy church people."

Unsurprisingly, the group's performance did not receive an encore at that particular venue.

"We were talking about 666 onstage and stuff," Tyler said. "And then they just cut the music and were like, 'Hey, get the f--- out of here."

Tyler isn't looking back with any regrets, of course. He's got two huge VMA nominations to think about, Best New Artist and Video of the Year.

"I'm really excited," Tyler told MTV News of his Video of the Year nod. "Shout out to Ron Artest. If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I'm gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele's."

The Cali rapper/ producer/ director was more willing to discuss his fellow Best New Artist nominees.

"The Best New Artist thing, that's cool," he said. "Wiz [Khalifa] is a really good dude and I've been a fan of his music, so if he wins I'll be pretty excited. I wanna win that for sure, but Wiz is awesome, I've been listening to him since '08," he said. "Even Kreayshawn, she's cool. So if she wins that too, I'll be pretty stoked. But you know, I wanna win, I'm just gonna keep it 100."

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring VMA nominees Big Sean, Tyler, the Creator and Kreayshawn — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice -- who may or may not be in Cobra Starship -- sound off on 2011 nominees.
By James Montgomery

In addition to looking a whole lot like Cobra Starship's Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez, world-renowned journalists Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice are also the go-to guys for hot scoops and slightly unnerving personal revelations. So it makes sense that they'd be in Los Angeles this week: After all, it's the location of the 2011 Video Music Awards. After a few hours spent marinating in the SoCal sun, boy, do the revelations get personal.

Earlier this week, as Cobra Starship were rehearsing for their VMA Pre-Show performance, MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with the dynamic duo to get their take on the field of nominees for the big show. Much like our previous encounters, Bagwell and Twice had an awful lot to say.

For example, both are beyond excited to see what Lady Gaga will do in her VMA-opening number ("If I could put my money on it, I'm gonna bet she's gonna be walking out in somebody else's skin!" Twice enthused), and both can't wait to see who takes home the Moonman for Best Male Video (Bagwell is partial to Cee Lo Green's "F--- You," since "[It's] how my ex-wife Teresa says good morning to me!").

And while they seemed mystified by most of the VMA noms -- in response to Nicki Minaj's Best Female Video nod for "Super Bass," Bagwell let it be known that he's "more of a tilapia fan," and Twice was convinced that not only were the Foo Fighters Asian, but their Best Rock Video-nominated "Walk" clip was actually spelled "Wok" — they both agreed on a favorite in the night's biggest category, Video of the Year.

"I'm going to have to go with [Tyler, the Creator's] 'Yonkers,' " Bagwell enthused. "I once dated a gal who lived up there whose [censored for your protection]. I miss you, Cheyenne. Give me a buzz sometime."

You know what? Perhaps it's best if you just watch it all for yourself. Check out the video above for Bagwell and Twice on the 2011 Video Music Awards. View at your own peril.

Jo Calderone is an acquired taste. The male alter ego of Lady Gaga -- he first surfaced in Vogue Hommes Japan last year -- was last seen in the Laurieann Gibson-directed "Yoü and I" video, and the two didn't immediately hit it off.

"When I first met Jo, I didn't particularly like him. He calls me Ms. Laurie. And when he came to work on my 'Yoü and I' video, he was like, 'Ms. Laurie, how long am I going to have to shoot?' And I was like, 'Jo, you're going to have to wait just like everyone else.' "

Now, the two get along swimmingly. So does that mean he'll make an appearance at Sunday's Video Music Awards?

"Will Jo be at the VMAs? Hmmm, I'm trying to book him. I'm talking to his manager now, so I'll keep you posted," she told MTV News correspondent Jim Cantiello.

She added: "He's not a diva; he's just a real dude. He's a little scary, but he's real."

Scary indeed. In the Vogue Hommes Japan issue, Calderone talked about his relationship with Mother Monster, saying, "[My occupation is] mechanic for my dad's business. This is the first time I've had my picture taken. Well, I always helped my dad at work, since I was a kid. I thought it would be fun to have my picture taken."

Gibson also talked up 2009's much-talked-about "Paparazzi" performance and joked about the excessive use of blood. "I thought it was an opera," she said. "I started out to create an opera. It was 'Paparazzi,' and it was the beginning of everyone seeing how crazy we are -- but crazy creative, and MTV [is] the most amazing platform to deliver that."

Big Sean's VMA-Nominated 'My Last' Almost Didn't Happen

Video Music Awards Best New Artist nominee originally didn't want to record the Chris Brown-assisted single.

On his 2011 MTV Video Music Awards nomination for his single "My Last," Big Sean told MTV News, "If I win Best New Artist, I'm gonna go crazy, because I really worked hard as hell." The funny thing is that as big as the Chris Brown-assisted single was for him, Kanye West's understudy originally bucked at the idea of recording the poppy single.

"When No ID gave me that beat for the song 'My Last,' I did not want to do it at all," the Finally Famous MC revealed.

Luckily for Sean, he was convinced otherwise. The song shot up the charts and peaked at #1 on the Billboard rap chart and #4 on the R&B/hip-hop chart. Ultimately, the single's success helped the Detroit rapper land the #3 album in the country, finishing behind Beyoncé's #1 LP, 4, and Adele's 21.

Sean continued to make strides in his breakout year, snagging an opening spot on Wiz Khalifa's Rolling Papers Tour, being named one of MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5 inductees and, of course, his Best New Artist nom at the VMAs.

He has producer No ID to thank. "He was like, 'Man, do you want to be a mixtape rapper forever, or do you want to make songs people can live to and dance to?' " Sean recalled. "And then I was in the studio with Chris, played it for him, and he went crazy."

Sounds like a no brainer.

Jessie J Is Going To 'Wild Out' As VMA House Artist

British 'Price Tag' singer won't let a broken foot slow her down on Sunday night.

Even if you haven't heard Jessie J's infectious, bouncy summer jam "Price Tag," you are probably familiar with some of her songs. "Party in the U.S.A."? Yeah, she co-wrote the Miley Cyrus hit. Chris Brown's "I Need This" — Jessie again. She's also worked on songs for Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys.

And, of course, Jessie J is the house artist for this year's VMAs, the capper to a year that saw her finally release her long-gestating debut, Who You Are, which included a tune she originally wrote for Rihanna, the raunchy "Do It Like a Dude."

What befits a budding British pop star's biggest moment on live American TV? How about a giant orthopedic brace? And we don't mean the fake Lady Gaga kind.

"I broke my foot, so I have this crazy 'Star Wars' moon boot," Jessie said on Thursday about being laid-up for her VMA debut. "I'm gonna pimp out my crutches for the red carpet." While rehearsing, Jessie fell off a stage and snapped her ankle, but she said it will have no effect on her performance at all, as she plans to take a seat on a throne and rock it out.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet," she said of the honor of serving as the house artist. "I've watched the VMAs every single year, and always wished I could be there. ... So, I'm going to be singing a lot, and people seeing me, and every single person I've ever looked up to in the music industry is going to be in the same room at once. Broken foot or not, I'm still going to wild out and do my thing."

With Britney, Lil Wayne, Beyoncé and a galaxy of other A-listers in the house, Jessie said she will probably be a bit nervous, but also super excited. "I'm still a little kid living her dream, and to know that that kind of thing's going to happen is just unreal."

Though she couldn't reveal too much about her set, Jessie promised that she'd be singing "a lot," and was just thrilled to be tapped for the gig, since she's still somewhat of a new commodity in the U.S.

Since her album dropped in February, J has already been having a stellar year, appearing on "Saturday Night Live," opening on Katy Perry's California Dreams tour and getting some attention for "Price Tag," which features B.o.B. (She also had the distinct honor of going on a "First Date" with an MTV News' own Steven Roberts earlier this year.)

"So surprised, because no one really knows me yet," she said of landing the house artist gig.

With a new single, "Domino," about to hit radio, Jessie made sure to do her homework and look back at what previous house artists such as deadmau5, Travis Barker and Wale served up. She'll try to live up to that standards they set, but will still "do me" on Sunday.

"I just hope that people don't notice that my foot's broken," she joked when asked what she hoped viewers will take away from her performance. "And just really notice that I have fun, don't take myself too seriously and that I've worked really hard and that they like my music. Just have fun. I just want people to get up and dance."

Lil Wayne Proud Of Drake, Nicki Minaj VMA Moments

This time last year Lil Wayne was behind bars as VMA weekend festivities were kicking off — not that his incarceration dampened his spirits. The Young Money CEO had Nicki Minaj and Drake to root for.

"I think it meant a whole lot more for me to see them onstage than it means for me to even be onstage this year, because I know they want this so bad and this is what they do it for," Wayne said of his artists' 2010 VMA moments versus his own involvement this year.

Last year, Nicki performed "Check It Out"with will.i.am during the VMA Pre-Show, wearing in a cotton candy-colored wig and form-fitting purple catsuit. Her YM cohort Drake had a hell of a night himself as he partnered with Swizz Beatz and Mary J. Blige to give a Frank Sinatra-inspired big show performance of his Thank Me Later single "Fancy."

Wayne's musical director Gil Smith promises a 'rock star' performance.

This year, while the Harajuku Barbie and Drizzy are scheduled to attend, it's Wayne who's planning a major moment. Not only is his "6 Foot 7 Foot" up for Best Hip-Hop Video, but Weezy will perform and then release the digital version of his long-awaited Tha Carter IV LP when the clock strikes midnight.

Still, for Tunechi, watching his Young Money team participate is rewarding enough. "They're young, they're fresh, and it's beautiful to them," Weezy said. "It's like you being a senior and you're watching the freshmen come in and enjoy the light. You remember, man, I remember being a freshman — that was amazing ... to see them do that, I felt relieved like, 'This is what it is all about, this is what it's for.' "

Lady Gaga's VMA Fashion 'Will Be Making A Statement'

For Lady Gaga, attending an awards show is not just about showing up and having a good time. For her, it's also about making a statement. And, many times, that statement is tied to the many, many wardrobe changes she makes throughout the night. That, of course, includes the MTV Video Music Awards, where Gaga will be in attendance Sunday night.

For her first VMAs, in 2009, Gaga made four costume changes, one of which included her seemingly bleeding onstage during her performance of "Paparazzi." Then, in 2010, she might have had three costume changes, but her most memorable was her Franc Fernandez-designed meat dress.

"When I came to VMAs that year, it was not perceived as performance, it was perceived as costume changes," she recently dished to MTV News. "My seat is my seat. In the overarching scheme of pop culture, I hope to change what things mean and have them branch into other areas."

While no one knows what or how many outfits she will wear during Sunday night's show, she did share what her bottom line is: "I will be making a statement."

That mirrors what she said during "MTV First: Lady Gaga" earlier this month, where she shared that her celebrity is a big art installation. "I think something that's always been very important to me ... is that the fame as an art form has always been an interesting stage," she said. "It begins on the subway or in the car on the way here. It begins when I wake up in the morning and I take a shower. It's not something that is temporal. It has no end, so I'm excited to continue as an artist to push the boundaries of where pop music can exist."

This year, Gaga is up for four Moonmen including Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message for "Born This Way," as well as Best Art Direction and Best Choreography for "Judas." Also, she will open the show with the night's first performance.

'Hunger Games' VMA Footage: Exclusive Sneak Peek!

Before Jennifer Lawrence introduces the first-look footage on Sunday, we have a taste for the Tributes.
By Eric Ditzian

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards are all about the ladies: Gaga, Adele, Beyoncé -- and Katniss.

Yes, Tributes, we're debuting an exclusive first look at footage from "The Hunger Games" during the VMAs, and after showing off a teaser photo early Friday morning (August 26), we've got another special donation for you: a snippet of video from the first look itself.

Hit play on the video to peep Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence as the reluctant warrior Katniss Everdeen, running for her life in the kill-or-be-killed tournament known as the Hunger Games. What's she fleeing from? A tribute with a hankering to spill some blood? A tracker jacker with a hallucinatory sting headed her way? So many questions! All will be revealed at the VMAs.

On show night, Jennifer Lawrence will be introducing the first look. Afterward, we'll be bringing you an exclusive online-video commentary from "Hunger Games" director Gary Ross, who will lend insight into the footage and answer some burning questions we have about the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-selling young adult novel.

The story follows Katniss and Peeta Mellark as two teenagers living in Panem, a land once known as North America but which is now comprised of 12 impoverished districts ruled over by a shining Capitol. Recruited for an annual reality-show tournament called the Hunger Games, the duo is forced to survive attacks, launch their own offensives and maybe just fall in love if they're ever to see their families again. It's a dystopian tale that's part "Truman Show," part "Gladiator," and yet utterly original.

So tune in Sunday night, when Katniss joins Gaga and the rest of the music world's biggest names, and then check back to MTV.com for Ross' not-to-be-missed "Hunger Games" breakdown.

Lady Gaga VMA Wish List: Balloons, Bones And More

Little Monsters make predictions (and suggestions) for Gaga's fashion and opening performance come Sunday.
By Kara Klenk, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello

When Lady Gaga was asked about plans for her opening performance at Sunday's 2011 Video Music Awards, she told MTV News, "I'm pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do."

Mother Monster is certainly in tune with the needs of her Little Monsters, and if anyone could guess what the unpredictable pop star has planned on Sunday, it's them.

Some fans predict that her 2011 performance will be an extension of 2009's blood-soaked "Paparazzi" number. One of Gaga's Twitter followers wrote, "I reckon it's gonna be quite eery + scary, and full of blood!" Many thought it would mimic her VMA promos, which had a jazzy style and Gaga playing piano.

Others thought she would tap into themes from her "Yoü and I" video, with several fans suggesting she'll appear as her mermaid alter ego, Yuyi. When MTV News correspondent Jim Cantiello talked to fans in Times Square during "MTV First: Lady Gaga" last week, one silver-bra-clad Little Monster said, "I'm hoping for some mermaids and some fish," while @killermuses predicted she would perform "inside of a giant aquarium."

One thing fans definitely want to see is a guy named Jo Calderone. @Steveo_010 tweeted, "Hopefully she invites @JoCalderone as her 'date.' " @JustJustan predicts she'll accept awards as her male alter.

In terms of what song she'll perform, many fans guessed "Yoü and I," while others were pulling for "Heavy Metal Lover," "Bloody Mary" and "Government Hooker" with the possibility of a medley.

No one will ever forget the meat dress Gaga wore at last year's VMAs, so speculation about her potential fashion is widespread. @MonsterStarGaga thinks the singer will wear a "bone dress"; other bets were on outfits made of lights, leaves and balloons. A few fans like @rACHEL_hALE13 suggested the most shocking thing for Gaga to do would be to "dress 'normal' no costumes, just simple!" (Since Gaga promised to make a "statement" with her fashion, we're guessing simple is out of the question.)

Or maybe Gaga would consider a simple look for one outfit, but she will likely change multiple times. When asked to predict how many times she would change, one blond-Gaga-wig-wearing fan in Times Square guessed: "17."

Will Lady Gaga take the stage alone or is a duet in the cards? Fans predicted Beyoncé would join her to perform "Telephone," and @mafeux suggested she "invite @alyankovic to perform a duet of 'Perform This Way.' "

Who knows what is going to happen? But we can expect, as @tabithadavis17 tweeted, "On a scale of 1-10 for outrageousness...I'd say 100."

Katy Perry, Justin Bieber Are Sure Bets At The VMAs

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 01:13 AM PDT

Bodog oddsmaker also likes Lady Gaga's chances at Sunday's big show.
By James Montgomery

Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News/ Jessica Hyndman

Earlier this week, we tried our hand at picking the winners for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, but with the big show just around the corner -- airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday at 9 p.m. — we figured it was time to let the pros have their say.

We reached out to the folks at the Bodog Sportsbook to get their take on Sunday's show ... and, as it turns out, much like us, they see it being a big night for Katy Perry. But it definitely won't be a clean sweep for the California Gurl; they also like Justin Bieber's and Lady Gaga's chances too.

So here, for your wagering pleasure, are Bodog's odds for the 2011 VMAs. Remember, it's only considered a "gambling problem" if you lose.

Best Male Video
» Justin Bieber, "U Smile," 7/5
» Cee Lo Green, "F--- You," 7/4
» Eminem (featuring Rihanna), "Love the Way You Lie," 7/2
» Kanye West (featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi), "All of the Lights," 9/2
» Bruno Mars, "Grenade," 12/1

Bodog's Take: "Justin Bieber makes millions of girls smile, which in turn makes his record company smile," Bodog Sportsbook manager Richard Gardner says. "Over at Bodog's online sportsbook, we're inclined to think that Bieber Fever is still running high."

Best Female Video
» Lady Gaga, "Born This Way," 6/5
» Katy Perry, "Firework," 11/4
» Adele, "Rolling in the Deep," 11/4
» Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass," 9/2
» Beyoncé, "Run the World (Girls)," 8/1

Bodog's Take: "Lady Gaga has just been awarded the #1 spot on Forbes' Celebrity 100, #1 Social and #1 Web lists; she also owns the #2 position in Press, #3 in TV/Radio, #8 in Money and is sitting pretty at #11 on their 'World's Most Powerful Women' list," Gardner says. "This woman has to be a clear favorite to win Best Female Video."

Best Rock Video
» Mumford & Sons, "The Cave," 7/4
» Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks," 9/4
» Foo Fighters, "Walk," 3/1
» The Black Keys, "Howlin' for You," 4/1
» Cage the Elephant, "Shake Me Down," 6/1

Bodog's Take: "If Noel Gallagher loves [Mumford & Sons], then that's saying something, right?" Gardner says. "And what about Marcus Mumford and Carey Mulligan's recent engagement? That's huge. The awards they've picked up along the way for 'The Cave' are added insurance for our bettors."

Best Pop Video
» Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," 6/5
» Adele, "Rolling in the Deep," 7/5
» Pitbull (featuring Ne-Yo, Nayer and Afrojack), "Give Me Everything," 5/1
» Bruno Mars, "Grenade," 7/1
» Britney Spears, "Till the World Ends," 14/1

Bodog's Take: " 'Last Friday Night' made Billboard history last week as it made Katy Perry the first woman to hit five #1 spots with one album," Gardner explains. "Clearly, Perry is the reigning pop princess."

Best Hip-Hop Video
» Kanye West (featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi), "All of the Lights," 2/1
» Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass," 9/4
» Lil Wayne (featuring Cory Gunz), "6 Foot 7 Foot," 5/2
» Chris Brown (featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes), "Look at me Now," 3/1
» Lupe Fiasco, "The Show Goes On," 12/1

Bodog's Take: "Kanye may have fallen onstage while performing this song in Norway, but he'll get the last laugh when he picks up the award for 'Best Hip-Hop Video' at this year's MTV Video Music Awards," Gardner says. "At least that's how we think this one will go down with bettors."

Best New Artist
» Wiz Khalifa, "Black and Yellow," 7/5
» Kreayshawn, "Gucci Gucci," 7/4
» Tyler, the Creator, "Yonkers," 3/1
» Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks," 6/1
» Big Sean (featuring Chris Brown), "My Last," 12/1

Bodog's Take: "Khalifa's $11 million haul over the past year earned him the #11 spot on Forbes' annual Hip-Hop Cash Kings list," Gardner pointed out. "But it was when 'Black and Yellow' became the Pittsburgh Steelers' anthem during their Super Bowl run ... that's what our bettors will be counting on."

Video of the Year
» Katy Perry, "Firework," 6/5
» Adele, "Rolling in the Deep," 7/4
» Beastie Boys, "Make Some Noise," 4/1

Bodog's Take: "This one comes down to basic math. Katy Perry has been nominated for 10 [awards]," Gardner explained. "While there's no such thing as a sure thing, she's cutting it pretty darn close with this one."

Lil Wayne's 'Mirror' Had A Long Road To <i>Carter IV</i>

REO beat was passed up by Kanye West, Nas and Drake before ending up on VMA performer's album, in Mixtape Daily.

Behind the Beats: Ramon "REO" Owens
As an up-and-coming producer, having Kanye West, Nas and Drake pass up on your beats can be dejecting, but Ramon "REO" Owens proves that persistence pays. After crafting a beat nearly three years ago, the 30-year-old finally got his instrumental placed on Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV as the deluxe bonus track "Mirror," featuring Bruno Mars.

"Kanye heard it, Drake heard it, and it already had the Bruno [hook]," he said. "Basically, Nas had it for a while, and it just ended up in the hands of Wayne and he loved it."

With the help of Atlantic Records A&R Mike Caren, REO, who producers in tandem with his group the Soundkillers, was able to get his beat in the hands of some heavy-hitters. Originally, his goal was to land placement on 'Ye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but had to settle for Tha Carter IV instead. REO said his placement boiled down to one thing: luck.

"It's to the point that they record so many songs over the time period that they're making the album, so you just hope to God that your song resonates with everybody that has to yes it," he told Mixtape Daily.

While many online reports are crediting Bruno Mars' production outfit the Smeezingtons with production on the track, REO insists that by the time Tha Carter IV is released at midnight after the VMAs -- where Wayne will also perform -- and the CD's liner notes revealed he will be properly credited as the producer and the Smeezingtons as writers on the song.

Though REO was informed that his song had made the album, he didn't believe it until C4 leaked Wednesday, and he still doesn't quite believe it. "I'm still kinda paranoid until I pick up that damn CD myself," he said.

On the aptly titled track, Wayne gets reflective. The sample-free instrumental features an eerie wail in the background and a smothered kick- and snare-drum pattern. Its appeal isn't in its intricacy, but rather in its driving emotion. "I had to listen to it a few times because I've just been hearing my beat for so many years, and I was like, 'Yo, this guy got off on that sh--,' " he said of Wayne's performance.

Hurricane Irene Forces NYC Concert Cancellations

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 02:11 AM PDT

Dave Matthews Band Caravan events, Afro-Punk Fest with Das Racist, final Summerstage show and many more succumb to approaching storm.

New Yorkers: Trade your earplugs for some frozen dinners and a couple seasons of your favorite TV show on DVD, because chances are the concert you bought tickets to this weekend has been canceled.

With Hurricane Irene tearing her way up the East Coast, many bands and venues that had shows planned in areas likely to be hit by the bad weather conditions are either rescheduling or canceling the gigs in anticipation of the storm. Forecasts are predicting the hurricane will affect states including South Carolina and Virginia and on all the way up to the eastern coast of Canada through Monday.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency, and the city's transit system will be completely suspended beginning at noon on Saturday, which is having a direct impact on previously scheduled NYC concerts. A spokesperson for the Bowery Presents confirmed to MTV News that the Dave Matthews Band Caravan events at Governors Island on Saturday and Sunday have been postponed. New dates have not been announced, but ticketholders are being encouraged to attend the event on Friday (August 26) instead.

Of course, it's also unclear whether bands that were set to play alongside DMB at this weekend's concerts will be around to perform at a later date. The Roots were supposed to perform Saturday, and Gogol Bordello were slated to perform Sunday.

The Afro-Punk Fest was also a casualty of Governor Cuomo rescinding all event permits for the weekend. "The Afro-Punk festival has been barred from holding any public assembly in Commodore Barry Park this weekend. Afro-Punk staff have been meeting with officials and sponsors to try and avoid cancellation but have had to cancel this weekend's festival due to safety concerns," the festival planners said in a statement. "The event organizers are regrouping to plan the next steps and will keep the public updated."

Himanshu Suri of Das Racist, who was to perform at the festival, apologized to his fans over Twitter and said he might fly out to St. Louis early to avoid missing that gig as well. Fellow Afro-Punk performer Chaz Bundick of Toro Y Moi similarly apologized in a tweet.

Fans planning to see ZZ Top perform in Westbury, New York, on Sunday are in luck, because the show has only been delayed until Monday, August 29, Pollstar is reporting. But fans that can't make the new date will be refunded; the same goes for ticketholders who planned to attend Saturday's now-canceled Bill Medley with Paul Revere & the Raiders concert.

The last of the free Central Park Summerstage shows this season, set for Sunday, has been rescheduled. Jagged Edge, Avant and Melanie Fiona will perform on September 21 instead, according to Brooklyn Vegan.

On Thursday, the Museum of Modern Art's PS1 announced on Twitter that their Saturday night Warm Up outdoor music series would go on in spite of the forecast. But on Friday afternoon, they tweeted a follow-up, saying, "Sadly, we have to cancel."

At press time, many Broadway shows were set to go on, though Entertainment Weekly reported that all Saturday and Sunday performances of "The Lion King" and "Mary Poppins" have been canceled.

Many events are being canceled and rescheduled outside of the New York area, as well. Journey's concert at Jiffy Lube Live on Sunday has been postponed to September 4, MTV News confirmed with a Live Nation spokesperson. As a result of the date change, Foreigner will be unavailable to perform on the new date. (All tickets will be honored on the new date.) Unfortunately, fans planning to attend Saturday's Silopanna Music Festival in Crownsville, Maryland, are out of luck, because the festival has been canceled and won't be rescheduled, according to Pollstar. (Refunds are being issued at points of purchase.)

Kenny Chesney's Sunday concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, has been moved up to Friday (August 26), the country singer announced on his website.

The Boston Herald is reporting that Sunday's Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival show at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts, has been moved back two days to August 30. And the Essex Music Festival in Essex, Massachusetts, has been rescheduled to September 3, The Gloucester Times said.

VMA Black Carpet: By The Numbers

Take a look at the nitty-gritty details of transforming a hotel lobby into an intergalactic fantasia.

LOS ANGELES — It takes an army to build the massive set for the 2011 VMAs. And over the course of the last week, that tireless militia has been working around the clock to transform the lobby of the J.W. Marriott hotel in downtown Los Angeles into the intergalactic fantasia that will greet stars on Sunday night.

The production has taken over just about every corner of the lobby, with lighting designers hanging a series of shimmering white curtains laced with more than 300 twinkly lights over a space that was previously a couch-filled lounging area. They've also laid down more than 12,000 square feet of black carpet throughout the lobby, covering the nearly 18,000 square feet of real estate the hotel has ceded to the production.

Watch the black-carpet live stream to see the action as it unfolds!

The first thing fans will see when they tune in to the VMA pre-show is the space-age "portal" celebs will be stepping through, a series of four undulating white shapes, the tallest of which is more than 16 feet high. That will eventually lead them to a 100-foot long, glittering paparazzi plaza, where the night's biggest names will face a sea of flashes. That space will be blazed by 1,700 silver-tipped incandescent bulbs that will light up the A-listers for their close-ups.

VMA pre-show production designer Scott Storey promised that viewers at home would not see the same old "step-and-repeat" space they always get at the average awards show, and he wasn't kidding. His vision of eight rib-cage-like towers that will "hug" the talent loom large, their wavy forms broken up by more than 40 pop-art-esque angular "pow" signs for this year's awards show.

The production crew also ensured that the whole thing would look fabulous by laying sheets of black plastic over more than 300 windows and doors on the front and back of the hotel.

'Our Idiot Brother': The Reviews Are In!

Paul Rudd, in the title role, walks away with much of the critics' praise in this ensemble comedy.
By Terri Schwartz

Even with strong performances from the ensemble cast in "Our Idiot Brother," the Sundance darling is being heralded as Paul Rudd's movie. Reviews for the comedy, which opened on Friday (August 25), are heralding Rudd's turn as one of the best of his career. And although the response has been generally positive, critics did take issue with some of the other idiotic parts of the movie.

Some found the script's approach to the characters too formulaic: Rudd's character might be an idiot, but he is actually a commendable guy when compared to his three jaded sisters, his hippie ex-girlfriend and his wine-drinking mother. Others thought the movie was a bit unconvincing despite its well-meaning message. Still, the jump from "My Idiot Brother" at Sundance to "Our Idiot Brother" in wide-release seems to imply a more inclusive element to the film that resounded with critics.

So will "Our Idiot Brother" charm you? Here's what the critics had to say:

The Idiot Brother
"Though the ensemble cast is uniformly strong, this is Rudd's film. His inherent likability and genial manner are ideal for the character. He plays laid-back especially well. (His aging surfer dude in 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' was a variation on Ned.) Watching Rudd bring dimension to what could have been a clownish caricature is the best reason to see this good-natured family comedy. 'Our Idiot Brother' is as irresistible and easy to love as a golden retriever." — Claudia Puig, USA Today

The Characters
"Peeking out from a curtain of shaggy hair and a beard, Rudd invests Ned with every ounce of the effusive, natural warmth that has become his trademark. And like so many movies in his career, he makes Our Idiot Brother much more tolerable than it deserves to be. Screenwriters Evgenia Peretz and David Schisgall play up Ned's innocence by making his sisters thoroughly unappealing: Emily Mortimer plays a dowdy, sad-sack hausfrau married to a pompous documentarian (played with withering contempt by Steve Coogan); Elizabeth Banks flails in a misguided brunet pageboy as a ruthless Vanity Fair reporter; and Zooey Deschanel lends spaced-out self-absorption to a lesbian tempted by a similarly navel-gazing male artist." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Script
"You want to laugh at this, except the movie is forcing you to do so. Adultery and dysfunction are cute problems. Deschanel's character shares a loft with her girlfriend (Rashida Jones, underutilized again and still the best thing here) and a gang of bohemians who don't get up to anything interesting. Though Deschanel's compulsion to play another Quirky Performance Artist is satisfied. Banks (shrill careerist) and Mortimer (neurotic wimp) conform to type, too. Ned makes their relationships harder than they already appear to be. He's a gimmick, and yet without him the movie is just Hanna-Barbera and Her Sisters. Either way, it's all emotionally counterfeit, and that bogusness infects the comedy." — Wesley Morris, The Boston Globe

The Direction
"Efficiently directed by Jesse Peretz, (Ms. Peretz's brother, evidently quite capable), Our Idiot Brother is a thin, unconvincing movie made likable by the charm and skill of its cast and by a script (by Ms. Peretz and her husband, David Schisgall) peppered with wit and insight. ... A handful of scenes — a visit to a cultish self-help seminar, a family game of charades with Mom (Shirley Knight), a profile interview gone off the rails — are sharp, funny and surprising. But the filmmakers mostly look for humor in obvious, picked-over places. Can we please have a moratorium on private-school interviews? Like yoga classes (which this movie blessedly leaves alone), they are hard in real life and suspiciously easy in movies." — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

The Final Word
" My Idiot Brother might have made Ned more of a symbol and less of a person. Where the filmmakers, and Mr. Rudd, go right is making him such a round and sympathetic figure, rather than the desperate, pathetic and/or slapstick character he might have been in different hands. Our Idiot Brother — not My or Your or Their idiot brother — is goofily funny, and silly, and in many ways follows the currents of contemporary comedy into the gulf stream of inanity. And yet Ned turns out to be a strangely moving figure, a comic foil worthy of affection, perhaps even respect." — John Anderson, The Wall Street Journal

Chris Brown Will Do 'Something He's Never Done' At VMAs

'He's pulling out all his tricks on this one,' chorographers Rich and Tone say of Breezy's Sunday-night performance.

Chris Brown stole the show in Las Vegas with his table-hopping performance at the 2007 VMAs, and he's been a tough act to follow ever since. But now he faces an even bigger challenge: topping himself.

As they prepare Breezy's moves for the 2011 VMAs, veteran chorographers Rich and Tone are confident he'll pull it off on Sunday night.

"You're definitely gonna see Chris Brown; in a 1000 percent mode," said Rich of CB's plans. "Of course everybody knows he can sing, he has great music, and aside from that, you're going to see that he's an amazing dancer."

It's still anyone's guess which song (or songs) the pragmatic dance machine will perform, but his latest album F.A.M.E. has produced a number of hits, including "Deuces," the Michael Jackson-inspired "She Ain't You" and his Best Collaboration-nominated single "Look at Me Now" with Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. Any one of those aforementioned tracks is an option, or he could do a medley that includes multiple chart-toppers.

Rich and Tone, who choreographed this year's routine as well Chris' 2007 stage show, remained tight-lipped about what Breezy's stage will look like, but the veteran dancers are impressed with what they've seen in rehearsals so far. "We've been working with Chris for many years; I've never seen him this way on this performance ever," Tone teased. "He's pulling out all his tricks on this one. He's definitely gonna show you something fresh and new; something he has never done before."

But can Chris Brown top '07's display where he sang his single "Wall to Wall" while hopping table-to-table, incorporating the audience into his now-classic routine? "It's hard to top yourself, but that's the goal that we're trying to hit," Tone said. "So, yes, it's a yes to that question, we are trying to top the 2007 performance."

Young The Giant Promise Pterodactyls, Hendrix For VMAs

The up-and-coming California band will make sure you know who they are after Sunday night's show.
By James Montgomery

Young the Giant know you've probably got a few questions in the lead up to their performance on this Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. Like, for example, who the heck are they?

"Yeah," frontman Sameer Gadhia laughed. "You might not know who we are, but we're in Hollywood already preparing [for the show], and we're very, very excited to play for you guys."

So, yes, while the California quintet are relative unknowns — though, chances are, you've heard their hits "My Body" and "Cough Syrup" on rock radio — all that will likely change following Young the Giant's VMA performance. Which, sort of makes them this year's version of Florence and the Machine, who rode their bombastic performance at the 2010 show to Stateside success.

"We're definitely in the Florence slot," Gadhia said. "We consider it a real honor."

But that brings us to another question: Just what will that performance entail? Well, from the sound of things, it could be one for the ages ... the Mesozoic ages.

"For our VMA performance, [guitarist] Jacob [Tilley] is actually at work, breeding pterodactyls, and he's prepared for just this one event," Gadhia smiled. "We're going to be flying in on pterodactyls. They're going to do an air show; they're going to drop us in, fireworks, we're going to have Jimi Hendrix performing, it's going to be amazing."

Seriously. And while we suspect Gadhia was joking (especially since Tilley added "We're not really doing any gimmicks, it's just us doing what we do: playing live with lots of energy,") there's no debating the fact that their VMA performance is a very big deal for Young the Giant. And for proof, all you have to do is check their schedule, which, until very recently, included high-profile slots at the U.K.'s Reading and Leeds Festivals.

"We canceled Reading and Leeds because of the VMAs," Gadhia said. "I mean, we always watched them, ever since we were little ... and we're from Los Angeles, so we figured it would be a great opportunity. Hopefully people in the U.K. will forgive us. I know some people are already annoyed."

'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark': The Reviews Are In!

Guy Pearce, Katie Holmes and Bailee Madison star in Guillermo del Toro's reimagined horror flick.
By Terri Schwartz

Katie Holmes in "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark"
Photo: Miramax

There are few childhood fears more common than being afraid of the dark, but Bailee Madison's character, Sally, in Guillermo del Toro and Troy Nixey's reimagining of the '70s horror flick "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" certainly has good reason to be scared. And she'll likely never want to leave anything for the tooth fairy again.

Del Toro loved the 1973 TV movie of the same name that terrified him as a small child, and set about remaking it. Hoping to scare the pants off a new generation, the "Pan's Labyrinth" director co-wrote the screenplay and produced the film and handed it off to director Nixey.

So will "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" have you leaving the lights on all night, or let you sleep like a baby this weekend? Here's what the critics had to say:

The Story

" 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark,' which puts Guy Pearce, Katie Holmes and young Bailee Madison in some serious stomach-churning, can't-bear-to-watch-it jeopardy, is really, truly, very scary. ... At least until about 30 minutes in, when you start to be distracted by the lack of logic in the storytelling and the fact that the nasty little gremlins responsible for all the bumps in the night can be offed pretty easily. Possibly a good sturdy broom would have been enough to clean them out along with the cobwebs in the corners of the Gothic manse where the film is set." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

The Cast

"There isn't much for Guy Pearce to do as the tone-deaf, perennially irritated dad, but Holmes — whose acting is often overwhelmed by her Mrs. Tom Cruise fame — delivers a sensitive performance as Kim gradually builds a tender, hesitant rapport with Sally. Still, there are problems with the characters and story here that the cast can't fix. It feels as if del Toro and Robbins never clearly chose between leaving the film in the cruel, manipulative horror idiom of the '70s — in which telephones never work, cars never start, and minor coincidences and catastrophes keep the family inside the house long past the point when any ordinary idiot would have fled — or uprooting it." — Andrew O'Hehir, Salon

The Scares

"Nixey provides us with a very gradual introduction to the inhabitants of the flue, which opens over a dark, deep space. Into this space we earlier saw Emerson Blackwood fall. Or was he pulled? Exploring the area, Sally innocently checks out the grating, and we hear ominous whispers and rustlings, and glimpse the body parts of ... something. These creatures are eventually seen more clearly, which I must say is a disappointment. The mastery of CGI allow filmmakers to show just about anything they can imagine, when sometimes it's scarier to show nothing at all. Consider the timeless 'Cat People' (1942). We never saw a thing. But when the heroine goes alone for a late-night plunge in a swimming pool, she hears something growl, and pace, and nothing we could [possibly] see could improve on that scene." — Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun-Times

The Comparison To The Original

"Reimagining the 1973 television movie that terrified him as a boy, the producer, Guillermo del Toro — who wrote the screenplay with Matthew Robbins and who has made a career transforming childhood trauma into art house shivers — may have entrusted directing duties to Troy Nixey, but his fingerprints are all over the screen. The child's-eye view (the original Sally was an adult), the mash-up of history and fairy tale, the overly fussy story — all bear his stamp, as do the richly detailed visuals and prolix tension. None of Mr. del Toro's classy fiddling, however, can improve on the original's marvelously economical scares." — Jeanette Catsoulis, The New York Times

The Final Word

"Pearce and Holmes, often fine performers, here stoop to the kind of 'Amityville Horror' acting in which every line gets highlighted and overstated. (And why is Pearce wearing a scruffy dark brush cut that looks like a wig?) Of course, it's the kind of cheesy acting you can forgive when a horror film delivers, but 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' grows less suspenseful as it goes on. The spirits, heralded by echoey whispers ('Sall-eee! Now you'll see what it's like down here!'), are a small, scurrying army of 10-inch-tall, humpbacked simian beasties who look like they came out of a CGI demo reel. There's no mystery to them, which may be why there's no fear." — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
