'American Idol' Experts Weigh In On New Season

'I hope that it can be, if not a train wreck, then at least not boring,' Entertainment Weekly's Annie Barrett tells MTV News.

In some ways, the 10th season of "American Idol" is a whole new show. With legendary meanie judge Simon Cowell not on hand to offer up his cutting putdowns for the first time in the show's history and Jennie-come-lately panelists Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres off the panel as well, there's a chance for "Idol" to reboot after a lackluster season nine that saw ratings slip.

There are quite a few changes in store, many of which have gotten professional "Idol" watchers excited for the show for the first time in a long time. When the new season boots up Wednesday night (January 19), MTV News' "Idol" expert and "Idol in 60 Seconds" host Jim Cantiello said he'll be even more amped up than he usually is (which is super-duper amped up).

"I can't remember the last time I was this excited for 'Idol' to start," said Cantiello, who will host the live stream "Judging the Judges: An 'Idol' Without Simon" right after "Idol" airs, at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.com. "There's a lot on the line for the show, with Simon Cowell's 'X Factor' waiting in the wings. 'Idol' producers are no dummies. They know if they don't become part of America's water-cooler buzz each week that their show is officially done. I'm sure they've painstakingly cast the show and truly kept their eyes peeled for the best talent out there, not just the best backstories. After nine seasons, America is burnt out. They're ready to shake things up, and I, for one, cannot wait."

As much as he's going to miss Cowell's acerbic wit, Cantiello said he's really looking forward to new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. "I can't wait to see the insane energy Steven brings to the table," he said. "He's going to make for some great live TV. And then there's Lopez, who I imagine being deadly serious. I'm thinking business suits, furrowed brow. She's going to want to be taken seriously, especially next to crazy Steven."

After a few seasons of lackluster performers and stagnant ratings, Entertainment Weekly "Idol" writer Annie Barrett said she's just looking forward to what feels like a whole new show. "It will have to be, because there's no Simon," she said. "I have no idea what to expect, but I hope that it can be, if not a train wreck, then at least not boring. Without someone to be the villain, it's great if they all get along, but will that work on TV? Will it be compelling?"

Barrett said she'd love it, frankly, if it was a train wreck, if only because it would make the show more interesting. But she'll definitely miss Cowell, who for her was the main reason to watch the show in the past. "He was so adept at taking down people and everything he said got to the real heart of what was wrong with that person," she said. "If there's no one to do that and it's all sugarcoated, I will be disappointed."

Both Barrett and Cantiello said they were a bit concerned about the show's decision to drop the age limit down to 15. "I definitely don't think the show needs younger contestants," Barrett said. "It's already pretty painful to watch some teenagers who are so expertly molded into reality-show creatures ... it can be kind of creepy. ... I don't think 'Idol' was hurting for more youth."

Cantiello was also worried about the new youth movement, noting that some of the 16-year-old contestants "really choked" on live TV after making it into the top 12. "Opening the doors to 15-year-olds may only exacerbate that problem," he said. "As much as they want to find the next [Justin] Bieber, they better figure out a way to ensure that the kids don't crack under the pressure."

There was also some concern that the two new superstar judges might distract from the promised return to a focus on the contestants. "My biggest hope is that 'Idol' finds one-of-a-kind talent this season," Cantiello said. "Ellen DeGeneres proved that a big star on the judges' panel does not necessarily ensure a must-see 'Idol.' The show lives and dies by the contestants it highlights. If they don't find the most compelling, the most interesting and the most talented group of singers, the show is going to be as culturally relevant as 'Skating With the Celebrities.' "

Robert Pattinson Says 'Water For Elephants' Felt Like 'Big Movie'

For all of the Robert Pattinson fans counting down the days until your favorite actor hits the big screen again, know that there's now just about three months (94 days, to be exact) until the "Twilight" hunk's next movie, "Water for Elephants," opens.

When MTV News caught up with Pattinson at Sunday's Golden Globes (he co-presented the award for Best Foreign Film), we asked whether he thought "Elephants" was a big stepping stone for him, acting-wise.

"I think so," he said. "It definitely felt like I was doing a big movie when I was doing it and it felt totally different from doing something within the 'Twilight' world because now it just seems so familiar, the 'Twilight' stuff. It's just like going to a normal job, doing that," he explained of playing vampire Edward Cullen in the franchise.

Pattinson's "Elephants" co-star Reese Witherspoon told MTV News recently that she couldn't help but agree with millions of fans about one thing: "He is extraordinarily attractive," she told us. "I'm not gonna lie."

Witherspoon shares a kiss with Rpattz in the upcoming film and a new photo of the two in a lip-lock may make more than a few "Twilight" fans jealous.

But Witherspoon was quick to add that Pattinson is attractive both inside — and out.

"Robert is such a great guy from a great family," she told us last month. "That's the thing that's so funny. He's not really this bad boy; he's just a great guy and really worked hard on 'Water for Elephants.' He really worked long hours, long days. He looks totally different in the movie."

Are you looking forward to how Reese compares to KStew as an onscreen leading lady to RPattz? Tell us in the comments!

This Week In 'American Idol': From Premiere To 'Pants On The Ground'

We take a look back at moments in 'Idol' history before season 10 kicks off.
By Katie Byrne

To celebrate the 10th season of "American Idol" (does that make anyone else feel ancient?), we're digging into the MTV News archives each week to take a look at monumental moments in "Idol" history.

Back in 2002, Kelly Clarkson was just a gleam in America's eye, not the chart-topping pop/rock diva she's become. Will the new season — which kicks off Wednesday night (January 19) — find just as stellar a superstar? Only time will tell. Until then, let's take a look back at This Week in "Idol":

2010: General Larry Platt Drops Trou
Of all the original songs heard during the audition rounds, none made a bigger impact on pop culture than General Larry Platt's "Pants on the Ground." At the time, we declared that the ode to saggy drawers "was no 'I Am Your Brother.' " Did "I Am Your Brother" get covered by Jimmy Fallon as Neil Young and teach Justin Bieber the value of a belt? Not so much.

2009: Kara DioGuardi vs. Bikini Girl
During Kara DioGuardi's first night on the show, "Idol" viewers were wondering what kind of impression she would leave. Their questions were answered when the new judge got into the cattiest of all catfights with Katrina "Bikini Girl" Darrell, an auditioner wearing nothing more than a two-piece who fancied herself the next Mariah Carey. DioGuardi defended her claws-out attack on the "Idol" wannabe but also gave Darrell props for self-promotion. "To her credit, she's gotten so much attention. It was probably a good call to wear the bikini at the end of the day," DioGuardi said at the time. "But we wouldn't be talking about the bikini if she killed the song."

2008: Not-So-Undiscovered Talent
"American Idol" has always prided itself in giving ordinary people a shot at an extraordinary music career. But what if the "Idol" contestants weren't so ordinary? Heading into season seven of the reality juggernaut, fans were outraged to learn that two early favorites — Kristy Lee Cook and Carly Smithson — both had previous recording contracts. Executive producer Ken Warwick defended the hopefuls' professional pasts: "The truth of the matter is, there are too many people who come on to audition for us to go into all their backgrounds. We judge it purely on, when they walk through the door, if they have a record company attached to them already, then we're not interested. If they have a management contract, they've got to lose it. ... We take them on the merits of 'Can they sing or not?' " But that explanation didn't cut it for some "Idol" watchers. "I don't think I'm liking the direction 'AI' is heading," one fan told MTV News in January 2008. "What happened to undiscovered talent like Kellie Pickler and Elliott Yamin, that are regular people with side jobs and school and stuff?"

2006: Brittenum Twins in Double Trouble
Terrell and Derrell Brittenum are probably best remembered for their disruptive Hollywood Week appearance, but just after their initial auditions, the media caught wind of their equally disruptive criminal past. As it turned out, Terrell Brittenum was in jail when America was introduced to his smooth singing voice, and Derrell was wanted by police. Both were charged in Rockdale County, Georgia, with forgery, theft by deception and financial identity fraud when the brothers allegedly used another man's identity to buy a car. Legal issues or no, the twins' "Idol" chances were done in by their Hollywood Week tantrums.

2003: Dunkleman, Out
Brian who? Original "Idol" co-host Brian Dunkleman chose to leave the show after its first season to pursue a career in stand-up comedy and acting, leaving Ryan Seacrest to man the ship solo — and create a media empire in the meantime. Dunkleman has since appeared on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club" and admitted to Howard Stern that his "Idol" exit might not have been the best move.

2002: This ... Is "American Idol"
Nine years ago, a little singing competition judged by a prickly British guy, a behind-the-scenes music producer and a has-been pop star premiered. It had "surefire hit" written all over it, right? Well, not really. But the show gained steam each week, powered by the raw talent of Kelly Clarkson, Justin Guarini and Tamyra Gray and the "how mean can he get?" critiques of Simon Cowell. A national sensation was born, and we haven't looked back since. [Editor's note: Sure, the show premiered in June, not January, but we can't leave out the biggest "Idol" moment of them all!]

Will the latest "Idol" makeover keep it trucking for another 10 years or stop it dead in its tracks? We'll have to wait until next year's This Week in "Idol" to find out ...

Joe Jonas 'Really Interested' To See 'American Idol' Panel

'That's pretty intense,' Jonas Brother says of season 10 judging changes.

During the ninth season of "American Idol," when the show was going through some lineup changes, Joe Jonas sat at the judge's table to help Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi while the fourth seat of the panel was in flux. The seat was later filled by Ellen DeGeneres, who, along with DioGuardi and Cowell, departed at the end of the season.

With a new season launching Wednesday night (January 18) and two new faces (Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler) joining Jackson at the table, Jonas admitted he's excited to see what the show has in store.

"I'm really interested to see the new panel because that's pretty intense," he told MTV News while in the studio with producer Danja working on his solo album. "But there's always amazing artists that come out of there, so I always like to watch the end and the very beginning 'cause it's always really funny to watch. So I'm sure we'll have that on in the studio."

"AI" fans are most likely just as curious as the singer, since besides the additions to the judges table, there's also a number of new rules this season. They include the return of the "Idol" mansion, a sudden-death round that will determine the top 10 or 12, the return of a "wild card" round, as well as a Vegas audition round, to name a few.

'American Idol' Fan Anthony Hopkins Loves Randy Jackson's 'Soul'

'He's so fair with everyone,' the 'Rite' star tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Anthony Hopkins is a veteran actor of the stage and screen and an Oscar winner knighted by the queen of England for his services to the arts. With so many movies to make and other important, knightly things to do, one would never think of Sir Hopkins as a super-fan of "American Idol" — yet he is.

We had heard that he was a fan back in 2009, so much so that he'd happily star in a movie version of the singing reality competition. So when MTV News caught up with the esteemed thespian while he promoted his upcoming exorcism thriller "The Rite," we had to ask if he were excited about the show's season 10 premiere Wednesday (January 19).

" 'American Idol'? Oh, yeah, I love all those [talent shows]," he said. "Somebody says they're 'chewing gum for the mind,' but they're entertaining. ... My wife makes me watch them; I don't," he joked before admitting that he and his wife TiVo every episode.

"I went to one or two of the shows and met Simon Cowell," he revealed. "Somebody I really like is Randy Jackson. We became friends, although I don't see much of him. I think we invited him to the premiere of ['The Rite']."

Hopkins went on to say that he likes Jackson's spirit and did a little impression of the veteran "Idol" judge's trademark phrase.

"He's a terrific guy. I love his soul," Hopkins said. " 'Hey, dawg!' I think he's terrific. I love his compassion, because he's so fair with everyone."

On February 13, Lady Gaga will finally release the first single off her highly anticipated May release, Born This Way. Sure, Gaga has said she wants this to be the best album of the decade and that it will most likely "piss people off," but little is known about the album's vibe sonically.

Her producer, RedOne, wouldn't spill too many details about the single when MTV News caught up with him at the LA Times' The Envelope Roundtable - Music Producers, but he did let everyone know that the pair have once again made magic happen.

"I think it's too precious to talk about," RedOne explained. "It's so beautiful, and Gaga is very special to all of us — to the world."

Last fall, Gaga blew her fans away when she released "Bad Romance," a catchy, incredibly massive tune including her very own Gaga battle cry. The epic lead single off The Fame Monster has fans and haters wondering if she could ever top herself. RedOne said you don't have to worry about that.

"Honestly, the only thing we do is we get into the studio and suddenly magic happens," he said. "We never overthink, or we just do what we do. That's how it all started. With 'Just Dance,' we did it in one hour. There was no overthinking. Even though I remember when we did 'Poker Face,' people said musically it brought something new to the music and you won't be able to top it, we went into the studio and we did 'Bad Romance' on a bus.

"That explains how we do it, so I can't tell you anything about what's coming but that's what we do. We just get in and do music we love and feel it, and thank God it comes out good."

How do you expect Born This Way to sound? Give us your predictions in the comments!

The Lady Gaga vs. Britney Spears battle continues now that Gaga's "Telephone" video director, Jonas Åkerlund, has been tapped to direct Brit's "Hold It Against Me" clip.

"Dance, dance, and more dance," she tweeted Monday about working with the veteran music-video director. "Getting ready to shoot the video for HIAM this week with Jonas Akerlund. Super excited!"

Åkerlund has directed a number of controversial videos over the course of his two-decade career. The Swedish auteur achieved mainstream success when he joined forces with Madonna to direct her video for "Ray of Light" in 1998. The duo reunited in 2000 for "Music," starring then up-and-coming comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, and they courted controversy in 2003 with Madonna's dark "American Life" clip.

He later worked with Madge on "Jump" in 2006 and "Celebration" in 2009. He also directed Madonna in the 2006 documentary "I'm Going to Tell You a Secret," which chronicled Madonna's experiences during her Re-Invention World Tour.

Åkerlund hooked up with Gaga in 2009 for her cinematic "Paparazzi" clip, which starred "True Blood" star Alexander Skarsgård, but the duo stepped up their game in 2010 with Gaga's over-the-top "Telephone" video, which featured a prison break, a mass murder and "Thelma & Louise" undertones.

Prior to working with pop queens like Spears, Gaga and Madonna, Åkerlund made headlines and gained quite a reputation as a provocateur making videos for Moby's "James Bond Theme" and the Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up." Åkerlund's other big videos include Metallica's "Turn the Page," U2's "Walk On," Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" and Pink's "Sober."

While details are scant as to what the "Hold It Against Me" video will look like, it's being reported that the costuming will be done by Falguni & Shane Peacock, who have worked with Katy Perry, Fergie and Cheryl Cole. They will be working on Indian-inspired costumes, according to Brit fan site BreatheHeavy.com.

"Britney's manager contacted us and we exchanged some e-mails with her about style and fashion. We sent sketches of our models to Britney and she chose the ones she liked the most," Falguni told the site. "Britney wanted to experiment with our style. She will be seen wearing a long black dress with pink and red detailing."

In other Spears news, not only should fans be excited for the video, but "Hold It Against Me" producer Dr. Luke also teased fans about the singer's second single. "Britney's 2nd single gonna be fire!!!!!!" he tweeted. "Watch out!!!!!!"

What are you expecting from Britney's new video? Let us know in the comments!

'American Idol' Judge Randy Jackson: Sitting In Simon's Chair Is 'Weird'

For nine seasons of "American Idol," Simon Cowell anchored the judges' table as a rotating cast of industry personalities cycled in and out. Paula Abdul headed for the exit after eight years, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres came and quickly went, and then Cowell himself officially departed after at least one season in which he seemed to have grown somewhat bored of the competition show.

Now Randy Jackson is the last remaining original judge and has commandeered Cowell's chair at the end of the judges' table. But with season 10 set to premiere on Wednesday, he's still not totally comfortable.

"It is a little weird, and sometimes I look down the table and I go, 'Kara? No. Paula? No. Ellen? No. Simon? No. Where am I?' " Jackson told MTV News recently.

"American Idol," he admits, is a vastly transformed show this season. Various rules have been changed, producers talk openly about injecting new vigor into the competition, and two new faces in Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have joined up as judges.

"It's just a different kind of show," said Jackson. "Simon is irreplaceable. People have been saying, 'Who's going to be the mean one?' Simon is still the mean one."

Yet as much as things will change this season, other elements will remain the same: sometimes the judges will be of one mind about a contestant, and at others their opinions will diverge — perhaps with a quarrel.

"Jennifer, Steven and I all agree a lot [and] we disagree a lot," he said. "You're going to see all flavors of the rainbow because we all think sort of the same way because we're music industry professionals."

As "The Twilight Saga" comes to a close, fans will finally get a chance to see Kristen Stewart's Bella transform into a vampire in "Breaking Dawn". Her onscreen husband, Robert Pattinson, admits that seeing Stewart hang out onset as one of the undead seems to be a natural thing for the actress.

"It's like she wanted to do it the entire time," he told MTV News over the weekend. "It's really funny, it's like a completely different environment onset when she's a vampire and when she's not. I think she's going to do it really well."

Pattinson's onscreen dad, Peter Facinelli, also had only accolades for Stewart as she officially joins the Cullen clan in the franchise's final films.

"She's doing really well. She looks fantastic," Facinelli raved. "For some reason, once they put those contact lenses in, you look very statuesque."

Fans are not only excited to see Stewart as a vampire, they're also stoked to see all the action go down in the epic "Breaking Dawn" battle scene, which Pattinson explained has been a bit of a daunting process to shoot.

"There's like a 27-minute sequence in the final sequence, and it takes forever to shoot," he said. "There's about 75 people in it. Being on a piece of fake snow surrounded by green screen for like a month, it's driving me absolutely insane."

It will be some time before the films hit theaters, but fans have already gotten the chance to see Bella and Edward in bed together.

"I love how they release that for the first one," he said sarcastically about the honeymoon sneak peek photo featuring the pair naked in bed together. "They just give it all away.

"It's always awkward [doing a sex scene], in a way, doing it with anybody," he admitted. "But at the same time ... it really depends on how it's staged and stuff. It's like doing Twister."

Last year was quiet on the music front for 50 Cent but the G-Unit superstar is looking to change that in 2011.

"I'm about 80 percent done with my new album," he told MTV News over the weekend about his forthcoming LP, Black Magic. "It should be out this summer, I'm working on that. It's exciting; we'll see how everyone responds to that."

For the collection, 50 is expected to hearken back to his early projects, like the material from his debut, Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

"The content had extreme aggression," he said of his first album. "What I offered on Get Rich or Die Tryin' was all the dysfunctional behavior I had seen all my entire life and I became the album to the general public."

The rapper's most recent project, 2009's Before I Self Destruct, became the lowest-selling album in the self-described "SoundScan Killer" 's career. Yet, as always, he remained relevant in part because of his business savvy, pushing Lloyd Banks' The Hunger for More 2 on the revamped G-Unit Records.

Banks, who worked with 50's former music rival Kanye West on HFM2, suggested late last year that the G-Unit head and West could unite soon on record. And although there aren't any set plans for a collaboration, 50 has been following West's moves, in particular, his joint album with Jay-Z, slated to arrive this year.

"It should be interesting," Fif said of Watch the Throne. "When you've got two artists, it's a good combination, good collaborations should come out of it."

Do you think 50 should revisit his "Get Rich" sound on his next album? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!

Ryan Gosling Still 'Processing' Meeting Bruce Willis

At Golden Globes afterparty, MTV News pressed the 'Blue Valentine' star for details moments after his exchange with the action hero.

One of the best things about covering awards-show red carpets — in addition to all of the glamorous fashion — is getting to watch all the celebrity-on-celebrity interactions.

A particularly exciting exchange went down at a Golden Globes afterparty hosted by the Weinsteins, where MTV News looked on as A-list actors Bruce Willis and Ryan Gosling met for the first time.

We were lucky enough to chat with Gosling moments after the big introduction so, of course, we had to ask what he and Willis had discussed, whether the seasoned action star imparted any wisdom to Gosling and so forth.

"I can't talk about it," Gosling quipped.

Sensing that the "Blue Valentine" star was holding back but secretly wanted to share some exciting tidbit with us, we pressed further, asking whether he was able to secure a part in "Die Hard 5" during their brief conversation.

"No comment," Gosling responded with a smile.

Fair enough. We ceased our probing and instead asked Gosling if it was in fact the first time he'd ever met the veteran actor.

"[That was the] first time I ever met Bruce Willis," Gosling confirmed. "I know, it's nice. I haven't had time to process it because I'm trying to talk about him. I don't know how I feel about it."

In spite of making introductions with numerous photographers and TV crews present, Gosling said he thought the exchange, though short, went well.

"I do feel good [about it]," he said. "I wanted it to be more private. In my mind, it wasn't in front of all these people."

Paul Rudd Talks Crocs, Beards On 'My Idiot Brother' Set

'I'm going to shave tomorrow,' he tells MTV News of overgrown facial hair he grew for the film, which premieres at Sundance.

We'll be honest: When we caught up with Paul Rudd this summer, he kind of looked like a mess. A Unabomber-esque beard had sprouted from his face, ripped-up shorts hung low on his hips and a pair of bright-orange Crocs hugged his feet.

"They suck," he said of the footwear. "I don't like 'em. They're not good, despite the fact that they look so cool."

No, Rudd was not down on his luck. He was still in wardrobe on the final day of shooting for "My Idiot Brother," an upcoming comedy in which Rudd stars as an idealistic organic farmer who apartment-hops among his three sisters' pads, sowing happiness and havoc in his wake.

"I immediately go to jail for selling marijuana to a uniformed police officer," Rudd revealed of his character, Ned Rochlin. "However, the character is not dumb. The character just kind of appeals to everybody's higher angels and thinks that if he throws goodness out there, it will in turn come back."

But it's just that it's-all-good-bro sensibility that ends up causing so much disruption in his sisters' lives. To begin, he stays with a career-oriented, overachieving sister played by Elizabeth Banks. Then it's on to a sister, played by Emily Mortimer, who lives in Park Slope and has just given birth to a child. Finally he ends up in a Williamsburg, Brooklyn, loft with a sister, played by Zooey Deschanel, and his sister's lesbian lover.

"We shot a lot of In Williamsburg," Rudd laughed. "People couldn't tell if I was a hipster or a Hassid."

Directed by Jesse Peretz, "My Idiot Brother" premieres at this year's Sundance Film Festival, which kicks off Thursday in Park City, Utah. By then, Rudd will have ditched the Crocs and the happy-hippie beard. In fact, he was planning on a much-anticipated shave as soon as production wrapped hours after we bid him goodbye on set.

"I'm going to shave tomorrow. I'll do it in segments," Rudd said. "You can never just shave a beard off. You have to do it piece by piece. Usually, the first thing I'll go for is the James A. Garfield or the Zachary Taylor. Just the chin shave. Actually, I don't know if Garfield had that. I'll have to Google it."

'American Idol' Season 10 Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

New judges, new set, new rules — we break down the major changes before new season kicks off Wednesday.
By Gil Kaufman

Like a high school girlfriend who comes back from her first semester at college looking totally different, no matter how much you think you knew her, the 10th season of "American Idol" will feel brand new.

After a tumultuous off season that saw a nearly wholesale remake of the judging panel, the new season will launch Wednesday with the first of the beloved audition episodes, which always bring the promise of new talent and a fresh crop of delusional weirdos to mock. After Wednesday night's premiere, head back here to MTV.com at 10 p.m. ET for "Judging the Judges: An 'Idol' Without Simon," a live stream featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests.

What can we expect this season? Here are the major changes in store:

» The debut of new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, along with Interscope Geffen A&M boss Jimmy Iovine, who will be acting as the in-house mentor.

» A Vegas audition round, where the top 60 singers were flown to Las Vegas to perform on the same stage as the Cirque du Soleil Beatles show "Love." Those 60 will be further whittled down before the semifinal round, when America finally gets to vote.

» The return of some sort of "wild card" round where the judges will bring back an as-yet-undetermined amount of finalists.

» A sudden-death round that will determine the top 12 (or, possibly, top 10).

» The end of gender parity. Producers have said that if they need to go with an all-female or all-male group of finalists or an uneven amount of boys and girls, so be it.

» A new set and a new music director in Ray Chew, formerly of the "Saturday Night Live" band.

» The return of the "Idol" mansion, where the finalists will live during their run on the show.

» Additional mentoring from a handpicked group of producers whom Iovine has tapped to help the finalists hone their arrangements. Among them: Rodney Jerkins (Janet Jackson, Britney Spears), Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Pussycat Dolls), Timbaland (Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado) and Alex Da Kid (Rihanna, Eminem).

» A quicker turnaround on musical releases from the finalists. Geffen Records chairman Ron Fair said finalists will start releasing music as the season progresses.

» A less "dawg"-tastic Randy Jackson. The sole original judge has promised to cut down on the shtick this year as he takes up the memorial Simon Cowell seat.

» The youngest contestants ever thanks to dropping the age limit to 15.

» According to producers, fewer guitars, as they want to see contestants sing and not hide behind their instruments.

» The first chance for "Idol" contestants to try their hand at writing original songs.

» Broader themes keyed to decades or genres of music rather than specific artists, which also likely means fewer celebrity guest mentors.

» And while Jackson never misses a chance to name-drop the artists he's worked with during his critiques, look for Tyler and Lopez to allude to their experiences in the music business to help guide the budding singers get it right. As Nigel Lythgoe said in a recent interview, this season the show is going to be more about finding the eventual winner of the show and less about "stopping people getting there."

Steven Tyler Explains His 'American Idol' Judging Style

Posted: 18 Jan 2011 01:10 AM PST

'I take what I've grown up with, which is being a very harsh judge of myself, of my vocals, of my band,' Aerosmith frontman says.

The "American Idol" season 10 premiere is just a day away, and to celebrate, MTV News has been rolling out our big guns, with "Idol" cheat sheets, breaking news and everything you need to know before Wednesday night's big opener.

On Tuesday (January 18), we had the opportunity to chat with new judge Steven Tyler, by way of a conference call with a handful of curious reporters. The Aerosmith frontman was just as energetic and amusing as he's been in recent appearances, proving that his presence and commentary on the show will likely be a highlight each week.

Of his experience thus far, Tyler said it has been good, adding that his judging style comes from his personal experience in the business.

"I don't take what happened to me this morning or last night or with the band ... I don't take that into judging kids [like] other people might have," Tyler explained. "I kind of take what I've grown up with, which is being a very harsh judge of myself, of my vocals, of my band, and lay that across the talent that comes across my view."

Given that Tyler seems to be enjoying his new position — particularly that he gets to sit next to fellow newbie Jennifer Lopez, who he called "a fox," — everyone wants to know how long he plans to be on the show.

"I have more than a one-year contract," Tyler revealed. "But as you know, things are what they are. But I have more than a one-year contract. I'll give you that one."

Although we're still far from season 11, we also got an early tip for next season's contestants. Tyler cautioned against auditioning with Aerosmith tunes, specifically "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" — unless you can knock it out of the park.

"They have to sing it good, you know. They must have sung in the seven weeks [of auditions], they probably got, you know, 15, 16 [performances of] 'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing,' " Tyler said. "It was hard for me because it always seemed to me when they said they were going to sing it, I knew someone at home was ... like, 'If you sing that song, Tyler will be enamored.' And when I didn't like it, I felt a little ill at ease to tell them, 'You know what? You really didn't sing it good.' "

But Tyler said that if we should hear any Aerosmith on the show beyond the tryout rounds, those performances will likely be solid.

"If any of them sing it now, remember we are down to 20 great people. So if they did, it would be nothing but good."

Dr. Dre's Detox Not Due April 20, Rep Says

A rep for rapper/producer says viral video isn't referring to long-awaited album's release date.

After a video went viral of Dr. Dre seemingly announcing an April 20 release date for his long-awaited Detox, a rep for the rapper/producer told MTV News that the clip wasn't referring to the album's arrival.

So what was the legendary producer referring to in the clip? That remains unclear at press time.

Dr. Dre has been at work on his highly anticipated LP for years now, scraping together several versions of the songs at various times; in one case, he gave several beats slated for his project to 50 Cent for the G-Unit superstar's debut album.

In November, Dre's first single, "Kush," hit the Web and was soon followed by a potential follow-up, the Eminem-assisted "I Need a Doctor."

A month later, Dre premiered the video for "Kush" featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon. The clip, along with a cover story in the latest issue of hip-hop magazine XXL, seemed to confirm that the rap Chinese Democracy was finally slated for release.

The producer's penchant for perfectionism has long been the reason for the delay of Detox, which will be Dre's first album since his 2001 LP in 1999.

"[I'm] trying to put it out by the end of the fall," Dre said in an interview this past summer about Detox. "Trying to give everybody what they've been waitin' for and make sure they're not disappointed; that's all I'm doing."

What do you think Dre was referring to in the viral video? Share your theories in the comments.

'American Idol' Judge Steven Tyler Talks Sex, Drugs On 'Howard Stern'

Aerosmith singer doesn't hold back on the eve of his family-friendly new gig.
By Gil Kaufman

This is not going to be your grandma's "American Idol." When the show that's beloved by everyone from tweens with blue hair to their indigo-coiffed nanas comes back Wednesday night with the first episode of season 10, it will have more surprises than the ones we've already told you about.

"Idol" has always been a kind of wholesome family affair that the entire clan can sit down and watch together without worrying about foul language, nudity or any other PG-13 antics. That's before new judge Steven Tyler came onboard, so don't be surprised if your sixth-grader starts asking, "Mommy, what's a Lunesta?" or "Daddy, what's a three-way?"

Tyler has done it all as the lead singer of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act Aerosmith, and he's not afraid to talk about it in its X-rated glory, even when promoting his new G-rated gig. Appearing as the surprise guest on Howard Stern's Sirius satellite radio show Tuesday (January 18), the motor-mouthed rocker made a modest attempt to play down his colorful past, but still ended up discussing the kind of sex, drugs and rock-and-roll debauchery you've never heard about from any of the past "Idol" judges.

Tyler left no stone unturned, speaking about everything from the inspiration for the song "Big 10 Inch Record" (hint: it's not about vinyl) to masturbation, his active (and colorful) sex life with his current girlfriend, his love of guns, multiple trips to rehab for drugs and Penthouse Forum-worthy backstage activities with his sweetie and an eager groupie during a recent Aerosmith tour.

"He's angry with me for what? Because I took f---ing 'Idol'? What a crock of sh--!" he responded vehemently when Stern asked if the TV gig was putting even more distance between Tyler and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. "Wait till Wednesday," he teased. "I saw the debut ... I'm not a TV guy, I'm a rock-and-roll junkie whore. I'm not used to your stuff, [but] it blew me away," he added about the emotions he felt watching the first 10 minutes of the debut episode.

Though he complained about his bandmates sometimes kicking him when he's down (or in rehab), Tyler said he loves his Aerosmith pals dearly and said he explained to them that "Idol" was a good chance for him to slow down and get off the road for a while to rest his chronic and painful foot condition. "This is something else I could get into and see if it was a good fit," he said.

Putting aside his belief that no one can really be a star without paying their dues in a million dingy clubs (though his wording was much more colorful on Stern's show), Tyler, 62, said he realized it's a new day in the music biz, and after boiling 700 contestants down to 20, he finally gets the show. "It's something that I've never got into because I never caught the rhythm of the show," he said. "When you watch it, you kind of fall in love with this guy ... there's some people who sing their ass off."

He also explained for the first time how he got the gig, saying he was writing a song with former judge Kara DioGuardi last year for a Japanese movie, and she got him thinking about the show. Tyler said producers came to him after Aerosmith's 2010 summer tour ended and made an offer. "She [DioGuardi] was talking to [executive producer] Nigel [Lythgoe] ... and so Nigel got to management," and that got the ball rolling, though Tyler said he swiftly rejected the show's first offer with a brusque "f--- that!"

And, in another breach of past "Idol" etiquette, Tyler alluded to his payday for the gig. When Stern suggested that fellow newbie judge Jennifer Lopez was earning $12 million a year on the show, Tyler sniggered and said, "More!," then instantly realized he may have crossed a line in discussing his paycheck. When Stern countered that perhaps it was more like $18 million, Tyler declined to answer, but did admit that he's free to bail after one season if things don't work out.

But when it came to discussing their sex life, Tyler wasn't so shy, with his girlfriend admitting that he's still got plenty of stamina and never needs Viagra to get his motor running. "It gives me a headache!" he demurred of the male impotence drug, before describing his first experience on the pill a few years ago, as well as the laundry list of exotic drugs he did back in the bad old days of his addiction.

In fact, it was Tyler who asked Stern if he'd ever been with two women at the same time, telling the radio host that it was "the secret to life." But when the singer's girlfriend suggested that she and Tyler had already invited another woman into their circle of trust, the Aerosmith frontman suddenly got a bit more squeamish and tried to change the subject. "Ah, Jesus, we're on television!" he moaned about the Stern TV cameras focused on him, before again insisting that it hadn't (yet) happened, but might in the future.

But, soon enough, the story about the backstage tryst unfolded and Tyler groaned, "Wouldn't you know, it would go to here?" Finally, after nearly an hour of the most unconventional "Idol" judge interview ever, he'd had enough when she divulged the gritty details of the encounter.

"You're going too far!" he yelled. "No more! No more Joe Perry, no more the band! No more sex. We got too close. It's enough." Asked if he was being shy because of " 'Idol' and his new image," Tyler snorted, "F--- no!"

Lil Wayne Lends Verse To Nicki Minaj's 'Roman's Revenge 2.0'

'All I do is win; my name should be Victor,' Weezy raps on remix.

Better late than never for Lil Wayne. The Cash Money superstar wasn't able to record a collaboration with his protégée Nick Minaj in time to make her debut album, Pink Friday, due to his incarceration. But Weezy more than made up for it two months later by lending a verse to a remix of her spastic "Roman's Revenge," dubbed "Roman's Revenge 2.0."

"I eat your face off/ You n---as sweet as pie, like this is a bake off," Wayne spits to open his guest spot. "I love Nicki's curves/ Swing at the baseball."

The New Orleans MC later adds, "Life is a puzzle, jigsaw/ All I do is win; my name should be Victor."

Since Wayne's release from prison in November, he's sparingly appeared on a few tracks, including remixes to Birdman's "Fire Flame" and now Nicki's "Roman's Revenge 2.0." So far, he's only released one track of his own, "6 Foot 7 Foot" from his forthcoming album, Tha Carter IV.

Over the weekend in Miami, the rapper shot the video for the track, featuring Cory Gunz.

"I would love to tell everybody the concept, but there will be people trying to get the idea and put it out before '6 Foot 7 Foot' drops," Wayne's videographer DJ Scoob Doo told MTV News last week. "But once people see the '6 Foot 7 Foot,' I guarantee that it's going to be a game changer.

"I think the video's going to be shot ... not on Pluto, but I think on Mars," Scoob added, joking.

'Game Of Thrones' Star Sean Bean On Playing 'A Good Man For A Change'

Bean plays Eddard 'Ned' Stark in upcoming HBO drama.

The series premiere is still months away, but it's never too early to talk about HBO's upcoming epic "Game of Thrones," based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy book series "A Song of Ice and Fire." It's a loaded, layered drama, but to summarize, think one part sword-wielding medieval fantasy, a la "Lord of the Rings," and one part sex-charged fight for power, like "The Tudors" or "The Sopranos."

MTV News recently caught up with a few key cast members at the Television Critics Association press tour, where young star Emilia Clarke revealed the hazards of shooting racy scenes. We also spoke to actor Sean Bean, a veteran of sorts when it comes to the fantasy genre, although usually in roles of a villainous nature.

In "Game of Thrones," Bean plays Eddard "Ned" Stark, a noble commanding officer and Lord of Winterfell, the northernmost territory in Martin's fictional world. Given Bean's resume, particularly his work in "Lord of the Rings," we asked the English actor whether he had any reservations in taking on another role in the fantasy genre.

"I seem to be quite drawn to the medieval, magical fantasies, as it were," he said. "It was such a good part, and I read the book and the character, and I just really wanted to play it, so I didn't have any doubts whatsoever," Bean assured us.

He said diving into the world of "Thrones" was a completely new experience.

"I wasn't aware of the books at first, and I wasn't aware of how big a following it had," Bean admitted. "And then when I realized it, I talked to David Benioff, the writer, who I worked with on 'Troy.' He's a great guy, does some great dialogue, and it's just a wonderful production."

Bean went on to say that HBO's involvement sweetened the deal.

"Knowing you've got the backing of HBO and the quality of them, I thought, 'Wow, this is a great role,' " he said. "[Ned is] a good guy as well, a good man for a change for me," he said with a smile.

Jennifer Lopez Plays Dance Diva On New Single 'On The Floor'

RedOne-produced tune featuring Pitbull premiered on Ryan Seacrest's radio show.

With the new season of "American Idol" premiering Wednesday, you'd think Jennifer Lopez would have enough on her plate. However, the singer/actress is working hard at a full-blown musical comeback as her brand-new single, "On the Floor," featuring Pitbull, premiered early Tuesday morning (January 18) on Ryan Seacrest's radio show.

In the track produced by RedOne, Lopez commands the dance floor over a techno beat, which incorporates a sample of Kaoma's worldwide hit "Lambada." "If you go hard, you gotta get on the floor/ If you're a party freak, then step on the floor/ If you're an animal, then tear up the floor/ Break a sweat on the floor/ Yeah, we work on the floor," she sings.

Jenny fans got their early fix when the demo for the Pitbull-assisted tune hit the Internet on Friday. Later that day, Seacrest sent Lopez fans into a frenzy when he revealed he would debut the finalized version of the track this week. Lopez is expected to make a radio appearance with her "Idol" co-star on his radio show Wednesday. "Fun talking to you on the carpet last night ... look forward to catching up Wednesday morning on air!!!" she tweeted.

J. Lo has been teasing fans about her collaboration with super-producer RedOne (Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" and "Bad Romance") via Twitter. "I see u @RedOne_Official! We're making BIG things happen 'On the Floor' this new year!!!" she wrote last week.

Back in November, RedOne spoke to Blackbook magazine about his studio sessions with the singer, saying, "Musically, I'm trying to combine all the elements that [make] her who she is. We connected, and it was easy to work together. She's in another headspace. She's very positive and content. She knows what she wants to do."

In addition to "On the Floor," the entertainer's viral clip for her buzz track "Good Hit" also surfaced online. In the minute-and-a-half clip, the Latin bombshell instructs her all-female class on the latest in "Advanced Fierceology/ Work It Out 101."

What do you think of J. Lo's new tune? Share your reviews in the comments!
