This Week's Main Pick
Street King: Rick Ross

Holding It Down For: Miami

Mixtape: Ashes to Ashes

Real Spit: We're back! Mixtape Daily returns, and just like the Bawse, we're in a new space and ready for the promise of a new year. Shout-outs to those who set the foundation and climbed to the top.

Ross had a hell of a 2010, dropping the thumping "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" from his excellent album Teflon Don, the fourth near-flawless LP in his discography.

Just before the holidays ended, though, Ross returned once more to drop his mixtape Ashes to Ashes, which he later re-released, revamping the effort with joints from Drake and his MMG acquisitions Meek Mill and Wale.

"I think it's the beginning of a lot of big things to come," Ross told Mixtape Daily about the collection. "So I wanted to give the people something before the year was out ... because I have a new album I'm cooking up. ... I feel like it's a new beginning.

"There's a lot of things that got to go. And this is the beginning of some new things that [will] pop off in music. Some new sounds, some new styles, some new techniques, some new bosses. And that's what it's about."

Joints to Check For
» "RetroSuperFuture" featuring Wiz Khalifa: Ross and Wiz endorse the Green Party on this slow, looping track. "Now, I stay high, while y'all stay low," Wiz sings on the hook. "Trying to tell me about the smell, I know/ My eyes stay red from all that smoke."

» "Made Men" featuring Drake: "Two-door Bugatti coupe, I call it Katy Perry," Ross raps on the boastful number. "Wiz Khalifa papers, my favorite berries/ That '65, I call it Rihanna/ It got a red top but it's white like Madonna."

» "Pandemonium" featuring Meek Mill and Wale: The Miami Don and his off-season pickups put it down over the brassy production. "They say I'm special as Devin Hester on fourth down," Wale spits. "So all that sh-- you n---as kicking, we ain't worried about."

'Skins' Cast Talks Sex, Drugs And American Teens

MTV's provocative new show is really about 'the relationships, and that's what teenagers relate to,' star Sofia Black-D'Elia says.

At first glance, it might seem easy to boil down the teen drama "Skins" to a simple format: teens doing lots of drugs while having lots of sex and listening to lots of rock and roll. But the cast of MTV's American version of the soapy U.K. show, which premiered on Monday night, say you're not watching closely enough if that's all you see.

"I don't think the sex and the drugs is really what's prominent. ... Throughout the season, what's more important is the relationships, and that's what teenagers relate to," Sofia Black-D'Elia explained. " 'Skins' isn't about drugs and sex. 'Skins' is about best friends and growing up."

But it does raise the question: Are kids really that wild? "There definitely are kids like this that exist in America," Daniel Flaherty, who plays Stanley, told MTV News recently. "There are those kids that love to party and go out and disobey their parents and do whatever they want and do take whatever pills and drugs, so not all of America is like that, but there's definitely kids in America that are like that."

"Things like this certainly happen [in real life]," added James Newman, who plays Tony. "I don't think they necessarily happen with the frequency that it happens on 'Skins,' but it's TV and we want it to be entertaining and it helps from a standpoint on sex and drugs. It doesn't happen as much, but I think as far as relationships the friends have with each other and the emotions, that stuff is dead-on, spot for spot what we went through in high school. ... Anytime you see sex and drugs on 'Skins,' it's about the story. It's never that for the sake of that."

Britne Oldford plays Cadie, and she told us she hopes viewers will be able to relate to the characters.

"I definitely hope that teens, even adults or parents that watch the show, take away a sense of security because, hey, maybe they'll see someone who's a lot like them going through the [same] situation," she said. "And they won't feel so alone. Everyone in the show is relatable to a certain extent."

Tom Felton, Ashley Greene Compare 'Harry Potter,' 'Twilight' Notes

'We would debate who would actually win out of Edward Cullen and Harry Potter,' jokes Felton, who co-stars with Greene in 'The Apparition.'

It goes without saying that the fan communities surrounding "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" are sizable. Ginormous, even. And while many Twilighters are also Potter-heads, when asked to choose a side in the always-loaded debate of "Who would win in a fight: vampires or wizards?" the conversation can get heated, to say the least.

Luckily for fans of both franchises, they'll have something to cheer about and support together when "The Apparition" is released later this year. The film stars not one, but two fan favorites: "Twilight" star Ashley Greene and "Potter" alum Tom Felton.

Coincidentally, both actors made MTV News' 11 for '11 stars-to-watch list, and when we caught up with them recently, we asked if the co-stars talked about "Twilight" vs. "Potter" fans or compared notes about being in highly popular film franchises.

"Not so much comparing the fans as acknowledging how incredible they are," Greene said. "We are both so lucky to be a part of franchises that have ignited such a passion in young people. Very few actors get to be a part of that experience, so it's humbling."

A very sweet and sincere response from Greene, which was appreciated. But Felton gave us more of the playful angle we hoped for.

"Oh yeah, we had lengthy debates," Felton said of his and Greene's "Potter" vs. "Twilight" chats. "We actually spent most evenings, instead of rehearsing lines we would debate who would actually win out of Edward Cullen and Harry Potter. It's still ongoing. We haven't settled it," he joked.

"No, I jest," he admitted. "We're both very proud of our work for our franchises, so to speak, and it was nice to be the first film that really collaborates them together. It's a very cool thing to be a part of."

So, who do you think would win in a fight: vampires or wizards? Sound off in the comments below!

A Tribe Called Quest fans can officially rejoice: The documentary chronicling the group's rise to fame as well as their legacy has been accepted into the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Held in Park City, Utah, the gathering is where Michael Rapaport, director of the documentary, cut his teeth in the film world.

"My personal goal for the movie was always to premiere it at Sundance Film Festival," he said. "I've always had affection for the festival: The first time I ever saw myself in a movie was in 1992 at the world premiere of my first movie, 'Zebrahead.' I couldn't be happier. For me, it's the premier film festival."

"Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest," which has drawn scrutiny from group member Q-Tip, boasts a rough and ready quality found in previous documentaries about legendary bands such as Led Zeppelin and the Beatles.

"I wanted it to be a classic rock-and-roll-style documentary," Rapaport said. "If you grew up listening to hip-hop and you were around A Tribe Called Quest, it was a part of your life.

"They are the equivalent to Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I've been fans of those groups and fans of documentaries about those groups for a long time, and when I approached doing this film, I wanted to treat it in the same way. I didn't want it to be over-produced; I wanted it to have a rawness to it."

As for who stops by to chat about the group, Rapaport lined up a storied list of talent: "I shot Pharrell, ?uestlove and Black Thought from the Roots, obviously Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Mos Def, Monie Love, the Jungle Brothers, Too Short, Ludacris ... a bunch of people," he said. "All of those people pop up in one incarnation or another."

Joe Jonas Credits 'Tron' As Musical Influence For Next Album

'We are huge fans of the new 'Tron' movie,' Jonas says of what he and producer Danja are listening to.

When you listen to the Jonas Brothers' music, you might not think that electronic dance music has any influence on the famous trio. But for Joe Jonas, who is currently recording his solo album with producer Danja, that's the sound and mood he's going for.

For the last few years, Joe Jonas has released pop rock albums, with an emphasis on pop, whether on a "Camp Rock" or Disney TV series soundtrack or alongside his brothers as a regular JoBros album. The sound has worked for them, but now Joe is trying out something new and it is very, very different.

"I think for me the biggest influences are Daft Punk," he explained to MTV News in the middle of a recording session, with Danja by his side. "I love their music. There's a guy, Frankmusik, out of London, a lot of electro DJs out in Europe are doing some cool stuff right now."

Adding dance duo Justice as another influence for the album, which might be released before the end of 2011, Jonas said that he just wants people to have fun with this album. And given pop music's current dance vibe, it's clear that Joe is trying to be on the cutting edge. "I just listen to a bunch of stuff you dance to, kind of electro-based," he said. "A lot of stuff that's so amazing [that] you can create on the computer."

So, what's the one really big influence on this album? Well, it's not even a specific band. "I think, for both of us, we are huge fans of the new 'Tron' movie," adding that after seeing the film at its premiere, he knew that it had to be one of the reference points for this album.

Jonas originally wanted to make a more organic, adult-contemporary-sounding album, but ended up with more of a dance vibe. "To be able to go on a musical journey for a while and finally with finding Danja and working with him, we've been able to collaborate on something that really works for me," he explained. "And to find me and not try to mold it into something it's not, to try and be myself and my music and kind of tell stories and be honest and just have something ... when people hear it, hopefully they'll be able to dance to it and have a good time."

'Jersey Shore' High Five: Drunken Snooki, The Remix

Plus: 'Seabiscuit,' JWoww's impromptu bathroom and more bonus 'Shore.'
By Jim Cantiello

Snooki on Monday's episode of "Jersey Shore"
Photo: MTV

Let's get right into the five best moments from Monday night's (January 17) "Jersey Shore":

5. I Have a Dream
So, we got a bonus episode this week, and on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, no less — just in time for Snooki and Pauly D to liken their contrasting tans to "jungle fever." Yikes.

Perhaps we should focus on drunk Snooki eating a raw potato instead!

4. Snooki and Seabiscuit
Vinny says, "We have this thing with Snooki that, when she drinks, you don't know what's gonna come out of her mouth" — but that works both ways.

Like that time, five seconds later, when she crawled into Vinny's bed in order to get some action from "Seabiscuit." Oh, right, that's Snooki's nickname for Vinny's manhood. Why hasn't this show won an Emmy yet?

3. Drunk Deena
Speaking of drunk people, Deena was kicked out of a club after falling off a stage. As security carried her out, she drunkenly slurred to them, "I'm fine. I'm fine."

No, really, she's fine. She's on "Jersey Shore"! MTV pays her more the drunker she gets! It's all good.

2. JWhoa, What the Hell Is JWoww Doing?!?
Speaking of other drunk people, JWoww decided to relieve herself behind a bar. Seriously. But, you know, she rinsed the area with a soda gun, so, "It doesn't smell anymore."

Note to self: Never order a beer upstairs at Karma.

1. Snooki Gets Arrested ... and Remixed
Snooki was basically a drunken mess the entire episode, and it was music to my ears. So I think now's a good time for a "Jersey Shore" r-r-r-r-REMIX! Check out the embedded video for a musical breakdown of Snickers' sauced shenanigans, including a 10 a.m. beer bong and body shots with a 65-year-old man. You will not be disappointed.

Don't miss "Jersey Shore," airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

'The Green Hornet' Buzzes To Top Of Weekend Box Office

Seth Rogen's action comedy stings its way to first place, while Vince Vaughn and Kevin James' 'The Dilemma' settles for second.

Seth Rogen as a superhero? Michel Gondry directing a big-budget mainstream action flick? If you had asked a handful of movies fan a year ago whether those were good or bad ideas, most would probably lean toward the latter. Well, those same fans would be wearing green egg all over their faces today, as Rogen and Gondry's "The Green Hornet" had a sharp enough sting to easily win first place at the box office this past weekend.

The Sony Pictures action comedy overcame years filled with bad buzz to rake in $34 million during its first weekend in theaters. It's not an astounding number given the production budget behind "Green Hornet," but the action-packed and gut-bursting story of pals Britt Reid (Rogen) and Kato (Jay Chou) seems to have the kind of longevity that could sustain itself over the next couple of weeks. Indeed, the only action competition it faces over the next month are "The Mechanic" and "I Am Number Four," the first of which premieres in two weeks while the latter arrives toward the end of February. That still gives plenty of time for "The Green Hornet" to leave its mark at the box office.

"The Dilemma," the controversial Ron Howard-directed comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, followed behind with $17.4 million in second place. Vaughn- and James-led films typically perform a lot higher — "Grown Ups" secured $40.5 million in its opening weekend in 2010 while "Couples Retreat" snagged $34.3 in 2009, and with the added ingredient of an Oscar-winning director at the helm, it's a bit curious that the comedy didn't meet the two leading men's usual standards.

"True Grit" continued to blaze forward on the ol' dusty trail with a third-place finish that brings the Coen brothers Western's grand total up to $127.4 million. Rounding out the weekend's top five performers were "The King's Speech" in fourth place and "Black Swan" in fifth, solid results that come hot on the heels of their respective wins for Best Actor (Colin Firth) and Best Actress (Natalie Portman) at the 2011 Golden Globes.

The Box-Office Top Five

#1 "The Green Hornet" ($34 million)
#2 "The Dilemma" ($17.4 million)
#3 "True Grit" ($11.2 million)
#4 "The King's Speech" ($9.1 million)
#5 "Black Swan" ($8.1 million)

Upcoming Releases

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher have "No Strings Attached" at the box office next weekend, while Ed Harris and Colin Farrell search for "The Way Back" in Peter Weir's new film.

Check out everything we've got on "The Green Hornet," "The Dilemma" and "True Grit."

50 Cent Comments On Kanye West, Jay-Z Collabo

Ever since Jay-Z and Kanye West announced official plans to put out an album together, fans and the world of hip-hop at large have been eagerly awaiting the release. And although we still have some time ahead of us before for the collection, titled Watch the Throne, hits stores, the release of first single "H.A.M" last week has been received with open, eager ears.

MTV News caught up with fellow rap superstar 50 Cent at the Weinstein Golden Globes afterparty on Sunday, and we asked him his thoughts on the big team-up.

"It should be interesting," he said. "When you've got two artists, it's a good combination, good collaborations should come out of it."

A number of other notables from the hip-hop world have been putting in their two cents about Watch the Throne and "H.A.M."

"I don't know if it's a hit radio record but it's an event," said Reggie Hawkins, program director for Hip-Hop Nation and talent manager for Eminem's Shade 45 satellite radio station.

Producer Swizz Beats, who's worked with both Kanye and Jay-Z and will be involved in Watch the Throne, called the overall collaboration a step in the right direction.

"I think that those being both of my friends, and knowing that people can team up on such a high-caliber level as musicians, as rappers, as friends, as peers — I think it's super positive," he said. "And I think that if more of the industry did moves like this it would be a better place for everybody."

"This is good for hip-hop," Jake Paine, editor-in-chief of HipHopDX.com, said last week. "It's been a long time since there was a highly anticipated first-quarter release. The media is guaranteed a win, but I think the music will equally benefit."

So what are your thoughts on "H.A.M." and Kanye and Jay-Z's upcoming album? Tell us in the comments.

Aziz Ansari Rates Golden Globes Host Ricky Gervais

'It's a tough job ... I thought he was really funny,' the MTV Movie Awards host said of Gervais' emceeing performance on Sunday.

Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais didn't seem to pull any punches on Sunday during his second year emceeing the glamorous gathering of film and TV casts and crews. His opening monologue alone took shots at several of the biggest stars in attendance ("The Tourist" actors Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, to name two), and directed a few playful jabs at naughty absent ones (including Charlie Sheen).

Still, no matter what you thought of Gervais' performance, he did manage to keep the audience on the edge of their seat, since you never quite knew what outlandish comment was going to come out of his mouth next. Like when he introduced Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher's dad, for example.

MTV News caught up with another esteemed awards show host, Aziz Ansari, at the HBO's Golden Globes afterparty, and we thought the comedian would be the perfect person to offer an opinion on Gervais' jokes.

"I thought he did a great job," Ansari said. "Sometimes with these award shows it's tough because the audiences are drinking and not really paying attention. It's a tough job. I thought he did a great job. I thought he was really funny. I really enjoyed it."

We then brought up the fact that it's lucky Ansari hosted the MTV Movie Awards, whose attendees are generally younger and not able to imbibe quite as heavily.

"Yeah. Jaden Smith wasn't doing tequila shots during the Movie Awards," the "Parks and Recreation" star pointed out.

So with the pool of people who've hosted awards show hosts not being a very large one, we asked Ansari if they have some special club or secret society.

"Yeah, we hang out at TJ Maxx," Ansari quipped. "Comedians are not cool. We don't have anything cool, so we just go to TJ Maxx and drink from flasks and hang out."

Sounds like a party to us.
