Bill Clinton To Barack Obama: MTV's History With Politics

Tradition continues with Obama's youth town hall Thursday.

"If you had it to do over again, would you inhale?"

With that one question posed to then-Governor Bill Clinton, MTV officially announced itself as a player in the political process. That was back in 1992, when Clinton was still a White House hopeful and MTV had just launched its "Choose or Lose" campaign to inform, educate and encourage young people to grow from electoral spectators into active participants. During a network-sponsored forum, a young woman artfully posed that question of Clinton's prior marijuana use.

"Sure, if I could," the presidential candidate replied. "I tried before."

It was a disarming response from a talented politician on a hot-button issue. And it made clear that MTV could be a home for legitimate debate in a less stuffy, more youth-oriented way than was traditionally possible. Clinton went on to win the election, and he tipped his hat to the network on his way to Washington.

"I think everyone here knows that MTV had a lot to do with the Clinton/Gore victory," he said.

In the years since, MTV has hosted a slew of other forums, welcoming candidates on both sides of the political spectrum, from Al Gore to John McCain. The tradition continues Thursday, when we join President Barack Obama for "A Conversation With President Obama." During the one-hour event, which will air live and commercial-free on MTV and its sister networks, as well as MTV.com, the president will answer questions on a wide range of topics from the studio audience and from viewers who submit questions via Twitter.

As we prepare for the event, we've been looking back at the history of MTV's involvement with politics. While we first made our mark with that question about inhaling, we didn't stop there. Over almost two decades, MTV has been heavily involved in every presidential election and has partnered with campaigns such as Rock the Vote and Diddy's Citizen Change. Tabitha Soren interviewed George Bush and Bill Clinton. Gideon Yago chatted with George W. Bush and John Kerry. Sway talked with Barack Obama.

"I think passing a law about people wearing sagging pants is a waste of time" then-Senator Obama told MTV News. "We should be focused on creating jobs, improving schools, getting heath care, dealing with the war in Iraq. Having said that, brothers should pull up their pants."

From televised forums to intimate, sit-down interviews, the effort since '92 has been geared toward one goal: helping young people engage with and understand candidates running for public office so they can have a voice in the political process.

As Diddy said, "We have the power, this election, to decide who's the next president, but we have to get out and vote."

Along the way, of course, MTV has put our own special stamp on politics. Who can forget that moment in '94 when a young voter posed this most iconic of questions to Clinton: "Mr. President, all the world's dying to know: Is it boxers or briefs?"

Hey, that's just how we roll. Clinton understood this ("Mostly briefs," he responded), as did every candidate who took the time to chat with MTV about issues important to young people. It's a tradition we started in the early '90s and that continues to resonate today, as President Obama joins us for this latest forum.

"When you look at the history of this campaign," he said last year, "what started out as an improbable journey was carried forward, was inspired by, was energized by young people all across America."

"A Conversation With President Obama," a production of MTV News and BET News, will be hosted by MTV News' Sway Calloway, BET's April Woodard and CMT's Katie Cook. The show will air live at 4 p.m. ET/ 3 p.m. CT (and tape-delayed at 4 p.m. PT) on MTV, BET, CMT, mtvU, Centric and Tr3s. The show will also stream on MTV.com, BET.com, CMT.com and Tr3s.com and will be made available on-demand 30 days after its initial airing.

In this season's second episode of "The Buried Life," Taylor Swift unknowingly made an appearance when one of the show's stars, Duncan Penn, asked her out on a date.

Much to the singer's dismay, the plea, of course, ended up on television.

"I had absolutely no idea that that stuff was filmed, so there was this realization when I got an e-mail from my manager," she told MTV News while promoting her upcoming album Speak Now. "And he was like, 'Hey, can you approve this? It's this episode of episode of "The Buried Life," ' and I was like, 'They had a camera on that?' "

In the episode, Penn storms the CMT Awards to accomplish #59 on his buried list: Ask Out the Girl of Your Dreams. Swift eventually agreed to go out on a date with Penn, however, the details of their date remain a secret. "I'm not gonna tell you what happened after that," she teased.

In her sit-down with us, Swift also dished on "Back to December," one of the new songs from her album. The singer said it was her chance to apologize to a former boyfriend.

"Well, I've always sort of written songs about situations in life, things that needed to be said," she explained. "And I've always thought that, you know, I write songs about people who deserve to have songs written about them, and whatever they need to hear, whatever is the right thing to say to that person — ends up being said."

Are you surprised Taylor agreed to go out with "The Buried Life" star? Tell us in the comments!

'Glee' Is A 'Goldmine' For The Music Industry, Experts Say

Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:52 AM PDT

' 'Glee' is a total game changer,' one expert tells MTV News.
By James Montgomery

The cast of "Glee"
Photo: FOX

Last month, when "Glee" packed an entire episode with Britney Spears songs (and one Paramore tune), the show not only posted record-setting ratings, but placed a rather formidable stranglehold on the iTunes songs chart too. The following week, they decided to work a selection from the hallowed Lennon/McCartney songbook — "I Want to Hold Your Hand" — into things, a move that was equal parts cross-generational marketing masterstroke and, well, fist-thrusting victory lap.

Because, over the course of two-and-a-quarter seasons, "Glee" has transformed itself from a cult curiosity into to a bona fide sensation. It has spawned sold-out tours and chart-topping albums, but now, it's become something else entirely: the kind of show that can feature songs by the greatest pop star of the past decade one week and the greatest band of all time the next. It's a genuine, market-driving, industry-rejuvenating hit. And how did all this happen? Well, because certain folks realized that there was money to be made in partnering with the show.

"The industry has definitely started paying attention. If you're a songwriter or music publisher, you're definitely promoting your songs to the show," said Jeff Brabec, vice president of business affairs for music publisher Chrysalis, which has landed songs by the likes of Billy Idol and Paul Anka on "Glee." "It's truly something different, because, of course, there are downloads, and the albums, which have been phenomenally successful, especially for TV soundtracks, but ... there are so many other opportunities [the show] presents. For a songwriter or a music publisher, 'Glee' is a goldmine. It touches almost every single source of income that's possible."

"A show like 'Glee' only comes along once in a blue moon, and it's just such a great platform for our copyrights," added Wende Crowley, vice president of film and TV music for publisher Sony/ATV, which controls not only the bulk of the Lennon/McCartney songbook, but also the songs of Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, to name just a few. "It's not only embraced artists like Gaga, who are so huge in the collective consciousness, but it's breathed life into older songs too. It's been an amazing opportunity to work with them, and you wish more shows like it would come out each year. 'Glee' is a total game changer."

And while that may be the case, behind the scenes, the "Glee" machine runs on decidedly old-school fuel — namely, music licensing: a dicey, downright confusing (and supremely profitable) area that the casual Britney fan probably can't even begin to comprehend. But, suffice it to say, when the "Glee" producers decided to use " ... Baby One More Time," they had to pay a lot. And before a single note of the song can be re-recorded, those payments begin with a synchronization license.

"Every time a song is put into a TV show, the producer has to sign a synchronization license to get permission to use [it], and it's a purely negotiated license," explained Brabec, who, along with his brother Todd, wrote an entire book on this very subject, "Music, Money and Success." "[The producers] send you a request that lists the use of the song and, in this case, the scene description, and they give you a number of options, with respect to how they want to distribute the show, and all have various price points. The publisher fills in the blank lines next to the dollar signs. ... You can make a substantial amount of money just in the synchronization fee alone. And that's just step one."

Admittedly, that's a pretty simplified explanation — we glossed over stuff like "five-year, all-TV licenses" and "out-of-context trailer licenses" — but after the sync license is signed, the ball is put in motion. Once an episode of "Glee" airs, the next step of the process begins, because now, a songwriter and publisher are reaping the rewards of not only iTunes downloads and album sales, but international re-airings of the show too. As you can imagine, this is where the real money starts to roll in — and it's all guaranteed under a mechanical license.

"Immediately, you've got the download situation. Under that situation, the songwriters and music publisher, for every single download, will get 9.1 cents. So if a song is downloaded 100,000 times in the first couple of days — and that's not unusual at all — the music publisher will get $9,100 and the publisher will share that with the songwriter," Brabec said. "And then, extend that to the physical albums. If you've got one song on the 'Glee' album, and that album sold 1 million units, that would be $91,000 in songwriter and music-publisher royalty.

"And that's all backend. These things go on and on, years after your initial downloads. ... If a song is sung by the 'Glee' cast, you're probably looking at $900 to $1,100 for one performance on the Fox network. And that's U.S. only. This show is broadcast or repeated worldwide; you collect on that too," Brabec added. "And then you've got the ringtone market. If the 'Glee' version is on a ringtone, the songwriter and music publisher will get 24 cents for each ring tone distributed — and then you've got sheet music, etc. Believe me, for years and years and years into the future, songwriters and music publishers will be making money on this."

So the bottom line is, if you're someone like Max Martin, and you wrote " ... Baby One More Time," well, chances are, you're loving life even more these days (and for the foreseeable future too). But the beauty of "Glee" is, you don't have to be a certified hitmaker (or even the Beatles) to benefit. Business is booming, and it doesn't show signs of slowing down anytime soon.

"When you have a song that appears on 'Glee,' the next day, it's on iTunes, and the number of downloads is astronomical, and it really reawakens people's interest in songs," said Kristin Durie, vice president of film and TV at EMI Music Publishing. "I think hearing these songs — both old and new — from 'Over the Rainbow' to 'Empire State of Mind,' is breathing new life into people's songs."

'Wire' Actor Tray Chaney Drops His First Mixtape

Celebrity Favorites: Tray Chaney

During the heyday of "The Wire," when the Baltimore-based HBO series earned critical praise and fan love (but no hardware from the Emmys?!?), Tray Chaney, who played the character Poot, could barely take a trip anywhere without being recognized.

Now that the gritty urban drama is re-airing on DirecTV, it's as if things never changed. Case in point: While visiting the MTV News offices, Chaney was stopped in his tracks by Busta Rhymes, who shared his appreciation for the Washington, D.C., native.

"At the time, we didn't really know how big the show would eventually become," Chaney told Mixtape Daily. "We had an idea that it was big. But how big, nah, no one could really tell. And now, for us to have a new generation of fans recognizing us and stopping us about things that happened in season one, it's great."

Since Chaney's departure from the show, he's ventured into other arenas of entertainment, mainly writing and rapping. He co-wrote and self-published an autobiographical book called "The Truth You Can't Betray" with Yolanda D. Coleman, and he released a video for his track "Dilemma," which featured Dru Hill crooner Jazz.

The multimedia plan of attack was always in the cards for the actor, who just this week put out his first mixtape, appropriately titled Jack of all Trays.

"I started in this business at the age of 8 years old [as a dancer who appeared on 'Showtime at the Apollo'], and I been surrounded by hip-hop all my life," he explained. "And I always did hip-hop music, but I never got a chance to showcase it, because my schedule was so busy with acting and 'The Wire' and doing other things as far as the acting world. I just wanted to showcase the ability of Tray Chaney to have the potential to make a hit song. When I started out a couple years ago, I was like, 'I'm gonna get in the studio and do a couple of records.' "

After the reception to "Dilemma" was mostly positive, Chaney put together his own team, Fire Drop Music, and put in motion his plans to release a project. So far, he has three songs on iTunes: "Make This Money," "Watch, Learn, Listen," and "Money in My Walk." He's still trying to get a gauge on fans' reactions to his music, but according to Chaney, everything has been positive.

"Things are going well, and I don't know if it's people are like, 'Yo, it's dude from "The Wire," ' " he admitted. "But with all the e-mails and comments I get on the records, I'm not trying to jinx myself, but there hasn't been a bad comment."

Taylor Swift Says 'Back To December' Lyrics Are An Apology

Singer says her new track is inspired by a situation in which she was 'careless.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

Taylor Swift is sorry, and she wants one of her former boyfriends to know. On her brand-new track "Back to December," she's in full-on apologetic mode.

We may never know who she's singing about on the ballad, which will appear on her October 25 release Speak Now. But she told MTV News that the time was right for her to write a song in which she said sorry.

"Well, I've always sort of written songs about situations in life, things that needed to be said," she said. "I write songs about people who deserve to have songs written about them, and whatever they need to hear, whatever is the right thing to say to that person, ends up being said."

On the tune's chorus, Swift sings, "So this is me swallowing my pride/ Standing in front of you saying 'I'm sorry' for that night/ And I go back to December all the time/ It turns out freedom ain't nothing/ Missing you, wishing I'd realized what I had when you were mine/ I'd go back to December, turn around and make it all right/ I go back to December all the time."

She says now that those feelings stemmed from a relationship during which she was "careless."

"I've never felt the need to apologize in a song before. But in the last two years I've experienced a lot, [including] a lot of different kinds of learning lessons," she said. "And sometimes you learn a lesson too late and at that point you need to apologize because you were careless."

This is the fourth song released in advance of Speak Now's late-October release. The release of the album's first official single, "Mine," was followed by the debut of "Innocent" at the VMAs in September. The album's title track debuted on October 5.

'Jackass 3D' Stars Say The Situation Acted 'Too Cool' For Steve-O

'Steve-O loved him too,' Wee Man says about how the Sitch brushed off the 'Jersey Shore' superfan at this year's VMAs.
By Kara Warner

Although Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino has likely been earning thousands of new fans since starting his highly publicized stint on the latest season of "Dancing With the Stars," it seems the overly confident "Jersey Shore" stud might have some repair work to do if he wants votes from a few of his fellow MTV stars. The cast of "Jackass 3D" — including Jason "Wee Man" Acuña, Preston Lacy, Ehren McGhehey and Ryan Dunn — have some beef with the Sitch.

"We do not like the Situation," Wee Man recently revealed to MTV News. "He cool-guy'd Steve-O at the VMAs."

"Cool-guy'd"? We needed a translation.

McGhehey explained that it was akin to brushing someone off with an uninterested nod of the head. "Cool-guy'd. Like, whateva," he said demonstrating with a turn of the neck.

"He was too cool for him," Acuña added.

"He was not that impressed with Steve-O," Lacy reiterated. "Go figure," Dunn joked.

"Uh-oh. Now we're starting sh--," McGhehey warned.

But Wee Man went on to clarify that this wasn't simply about being snubbed at a big awards show. What made the incident particularly irksome, he said, is that Steve-O is such a big fan of Sorrentino's hit show, "Jersey Shore."

"And Steve-O loved him too," Acuña said. We then pointed out that the Situation is technically following in Steve-O's footsteps with his "DWTS" gig. Perhaps he'll be eliminated soon?

"Soon," he laughed. "Not soon enough."

Still, in spite of the "Jackass" castmates' beef with the Sitch, Steve-O said the snub hadn't dimmed his appreciation for the reality series.

"I have a rescue dog named Walter, and Walter and I are such fans of the 'Jersey Shore' that we changed his name to DJ Wally D," Steve-O confessed. "Yeah, he pulled a little bit of a 'cool guy' routine," Steve-O confirmed. "But then again, that's kind of what he's supposed to do, right? Be a douche bag?" he laughed. "What am I, like, going to be shocked?"

This Thursday, MTV, BET, CMT, Tr3s, mtvU and Centric will air "A Conversation With President Obama," an hour-long, commercial-free town hall, held before an audience of 250 young people in Washington, D.C. But you don't have to be in the house to take part in the discussion. We want to hear from viewers everywhere.

Because while President Obama will be answering questions from the studio audience, the forum will also be streaming on MTV.com, BET.com, CMT.com and Tr3s.com too. And while they watch, online viewers will also be able to take part, thanks to a special Twitter Tracker tool.

From now through the live show, Twitter users can submit questions for the town hall by using the hashtag "#ask" plus any specific issue of interest to them. So, if you'd like to ask President Obama about how he plans to create jobs, you'd tweet "#askjobs" and then your question. If it's a question about education, you'd tweet "#askeducation." The same can be done for comments about the event, using the hashtag "#comment," followed by your thoughts. Through the Twitter Tracker, which launches on Wednesday, users can submit questions directly on the site and watch to see which #ask topics are trending at the moment.

The show will also be made available on-demand 30 days after its initial airing.

'30 Rock' Stars Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan Reveal Live-Show Worries

'Many things could go terribly wrong,' Fey warns MTV's 'The Seven.' 'So tune in!'
By Kara Warner

Ask any fervent "30 Rock" fan what they like most about the zany NBC comedy, and they'll likely spout some variation of how original or hilarious it is, or how obsessed they are with (insert star's name here) Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Alec Baldwin.

The cast and crew will aim to please, in particular, the originality-loving wing of their fanbase when they go live for this week's episode. The "30 Rock" team will shoot one version for East Coast viewers and another for the West Coast audience. MTV's "The Seven" caught up with the show's stars to find out how they're preparing for Thursday's big event.

"I'll probably get my ankles taped up, put black marks under my eyes, pre-game warm-up, stretching," Morgan said on Tuesday's (October 12) episode. "Get one or two or three women pregnant," he joked. "My biggest fear about doing the live show? Somebody pulls the plug out of the wall."

For creator/writer/star Tina Fey — no stranger, of course, to live TV after years on "Saturday Night Live" — her biggest concern is her ... footwear.

"It seems that in this show I'm going to have to do the most running around the studio," Fey explained. "So I was a little nervous about that, but I think I literally asked the costume designer to get me black Easy Spirit sneakers; hopefully no one will see. I really need grandma-style shoes to run around the studio.

"Many things could go terribly wrong," she added. "So tune in!"

Fellow castmates Jack McBrayer and Jane Krakowski admitted that Morgan, who plays Tracy Jordan, might be their biggest obstacle, in that he's the castmember who most easily cracks them up.

"Tracy makes me laugh, whether he wants to or not," McBrayer said.

Potential outtakes or no, Morgan said he's committed to what's been written for him.

"I'm just going to stick to the script," he promised.

Do you think the "30 Rock" cast can pull off a live show? Tell us in the comments!

GLC Says Debut Album Isn't All About 'Kanye, Kanye, Kanye'

'I am an entity within myself,' G.O.O.D. Music artist tells MTV News.

Most people, especially anyone outside Chicago, are only familiar with GLC as a member of Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music family, since he's featured on West tracks like "Spaceship" and "Drive Slow." But GLC is stepping out, making a name for himself with his debut album, Love, Life & Loyalty, which dropped Tuesday (October 12), and he's glad fans will have a chance to hear what he has to say.

"A lot of people may have thought that my album was going to be centered around Kanye. It was going to be 'Kanye, Kanye, Kanye,' but I am an entity within myself, and I am the Ism, so I have to spread my ism."

GLC said that he's grateful to have been in the game for quite some time, but people will learn more about him through his solo album, which he said is filled with stories of growth and development. "Pull Me Back," a number about avoiding past mistakes, landed online Tuesday.

"We all have to grow from point A in order to get to point B, and the day that you stop learning is the day that you die," he told MTV News. "I learn something new every day, and I'm constantly in the pursuit of growth. I'm constantly in the pursuit of bettering myself and bettering those that are around me."

The album features a diverse cast of characters, from Bun B and Sir Mix-a-Lot to fellow G.O.O.D. family members Kid Cudi and John Legend. He even had Manfred Mann redo his band's version of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light." And, of course, West makes an appearance on the song "Flight School." That song leaked a couple of years back featuring West and T-Pain, but it's actually a song GLC played for West.

"He was like, 'Yo, I want to get on this.' And he took the sample out and reproduced the beat and had T-Pain sing the hook," GLC recalled. "And now we have 'Flight School.' "

'Jersey Shore' Cast's 'Dancing With The Stars' Jokes 'Disappoint' The Situation

Families bicker, make up, then bicker some more. The clan from "Jersey Shore" is no different.

The cast has taken pleasure the past few weeks in playfully dissing Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, who's been jumping and jiving on "Dancing With the Stars." "Mike has legs, so does a chair — it doesn't mean the chair can dance, right?" Ronnie joked to MTV News.

Yet for all their smack talk, they all support the Situation at the end of the day. But Sitch just wishes they'd ramp up the encouragement and tamp down on the insults.

"I'm glad that they are supporting me, because I would do the same," he told us, adding, "I'm a little disappointed in their response. But at the same time, I'm a positive person, and that would never get me down. At the end of the day, I have to practice, practice, practice, and I have to get down my dance enough to move on to the next round."

Whether Mike will, in fact, move on to the next round after a rather awkward take on the Argentine tango Monday remains to be seen. Yet he's proud of how far he's come and is skeptical that his "Shore" roomies could do any better.

"At one particular point, I remember my castmates didn't think I was going to get past the first round," he said. "Now it's already the fourth round, and I've already proved wrong the people that didn't support me. If they're not supporting me and saying the dances aren't the best, that's obviously a little disappointing, but I'm going out there and trying. The fans are seeing that.

"I would love to see them go out there and even attempt — even attempt — to put on a dancing shoe," he continued.

The 2010 list will be revealed beginning October 18, and experienced artists like Big Boi and Bun B are angling for a position on it, as are upstarts like Waka Flocka Flame and Nicki Minaj.

Raekwon is rooting for the veterans to make the cut.

"All of them are winners to me, honestly," he told MTV News. "I can't say who should get it and who shouldn't, because [Big Boi and Bun B] are both superstars to me. Whoever gets it, they deserve it."

The Wu-Tang MC said it's up to the vets to keep pushing forward if they expect to receive the same nods their younger contemporaries earn.

"I think it's all in the mind," he explained. "If you're somebody that really paved the way in the game, it's all on you. And that's something that I had to [realize] at the end of the day. It's like, I just want people to know I still love this. I'm in love with this.' It's like being with a woman that you care about, that you really love — no matter how far you're away from her, you still love her.

"If you say that you can do something and you know that people know you're capable of doing it, then do it to your best ability," Raekwon added. "Do it 'till the wheels falls off."

Come back to MTVNews.com next Monday, October 18, when we'll begin revealing the Hottest MCs in the Game of 2010. And until then, talk about your picks in the comments below.

Christina Aguilera Confirms Split From Jordan Bratman

'Although Jordan and I are separated, our commitment to our son Max remains as strong as ever,' she says in a statement.

It's shaping up to be the week of celebrity breakups. Not long after David Arquette's call to Howard Stern on Tuesday morning (October 12) to discuss his split with wife Courteney Cox, Christina Aguilera issued a statement to confirm her separation from husband Jordan Bratman.

"Although Jordan and I are separated, our commitment to our son Max remains as strong as ever," Aguilera said in the statement.

A source told UsMagazine.com that they "have been separated for a few months ... they are now living apart, and they will see how that goes." The pair have not yet decided to divorce, and both remain committed to their child who right now is "their main concern." "They were very much in love. But over the last six months, it became clear they were more like friends than husband and wife." The source added that Aguilera even "proposed their August trip to Italy to rekindle their relationship, but it didn't help."

After meeting the music marketing executive at her music management firm, Azoff Music Management, in 2002, Aguilera and Bratman married in November 2005 in Napa Valley. They had their son, Max, in January 2008.

While promoting her album Bionic earlier this year, Aguilera didn't shy away from speaking about her family and gave no indication of the impending split, noting that she and Bratman still had "naked Sundays."

"I think it's important that [Max] sees mommy not be ashamed for her sexuality. ... We're art collectors, there are a lot of female nudes around the house. Max will be growing up in a house where it's just the norm. ... It's only weird when you shame it," she said. "I'm more confident and comfortable in my own skin. I think I'm even a more sexual Christina."

'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Policy Struck Down By Judge

U.S. District Court judge declares the military's policy unconstitutional.

Though a bill that would have repealed the "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the U.S. military died on the Senate floor a few weeks ago, the ban on troops being openly gay got a serious blow earlier Tuesday (October 12): U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips issued an injunction declaring an immediate end to the policy.

Judge Phillips declared the policy unconstitutional on the grounds that it violates both the free-speech and due-process rights of people serving in the military.

That's not to say everything is all clear for gay, lesbian and transgender soldiers. U.S. Department of Justice attorneys have 60 days to appeal the ruling (though it was not immediately clear if they would). Though the White House had no immediate comment, it has been President Obama's stance that "don't ask, don't tell" should be resolved by an act of Congress and not by the court system.

However, the ruling was declared a victory by gay-rights activists who have been working hard to avenge the some 14,000 former service members who have been affected by the 17-year-old policy.

Back on September 20, Lady Gaga hosted a rally in Maine in an attempt to get the two moderate senators from that state to vote in favor of bringing the bill that could have repealed "don't ask, don't tell" to the Senate floor. It was part of a larger crusade that Gaga fronted that included an oft-tweeted YouTube video and a trip to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards with a handful of discharged gay soldiers in tow.

The threat of a Republican filibuster shot down the piece of legislation, and the upcoming midterm elections could end up shifting the numbers in Congress in a way that could bury action on "don't ask, don't tell" for years.

On Tuesday (October 12), Taylor Swift released a new tune, the breakup ballad "Back to December," and fans quickly started speculating that the song was about former flame Taylor Lautner.

We might never know who the song is really about, but in the new issue of Ladies' Home Journal, Swift admits that she might always have feelings for the "Twilight" heartthrob. When asked to name her current crush, Swift replied, "Taylor Lautner. It's always going to be Taylor."

Aside from her Lautner love, Swift also talked about what she looks for in a guy. "Someone who loves you for who you are. I like doing cute art projects with glitter, and there have been guys who've made me feel like that's weird," she explained. "But then there are guys who find it endearing."

Swift didn't just open up about her love life; she also talked about her upcoming album, Speak Now, which she called "diverse, detailed, relationship-y. I'm turning relationship into an adjective."

She shared a bit about the creative process that went into making the project, which is due October 25. "My songs are like open letters. They say everything I wished I had said when certain people were standing right next to me. I imagine I'll be getting a few text messages from these people once the album comes out. I have an app on my iPhone that's a voice recorder. I'll be in the middle of a conversation, and I'll literally walk away to record a bridge, a pre-chorus or half of a hook, then go right back to the conversation like nothing happened."

The superstar also revealed a surprising dream collaborator: Jay-Z. "Our genres are completely different, but there could be something cool about that," she said.

The full list of nominees for the 2010 American Music Awards were announced Tuesday (October 12) in Los Angeles, and, much like he's done for most of the year, Eminem stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Em is up for five awards at the 2010 AMAs, tied with country juggernauts Lady Antebellum for the most of any artist. Justin Bieber scored four nods, while B.o.B, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Usher are each up for three. Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna and Drake are also nominated in various categories.

Eminem is nominated in both the Favorite Male Artist - Pop or Rock (up against Bieber and Usher) and Hip-Hop categories and Artist of the Year (where he'll face off against Gaga, Perry, Bieber and Ke$ha). His massively successful Recovery disc is also up for Favorite Album - Rap or Hip-Hop. Bieber's four nods are for Favorite Male - Pop or Rock, Artist of the Year and Breakthrough Artist of the Year. My World 2.0 is also in the running for Album of the Year - Pop or Rock.

AMA nominees are selected from BigChampagne's Ultimate Chart, which ranks the most popular artists and songs based on a weighted combination of music sales, radio and TV broadcast, Internet streaming and video viewing and "additional online metrics," including social-media activity.

Winners will be determined by online voting, at AMAVote.com; voting is now under way in all categories.

The 38th annual AMAs will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in L.A. on Sunday, November 21, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Kanye West has been working hard in the run-up to his forthcoming album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Among his activities: previewing his new album at social media companies; premiering the long-form video for his latest single, "Runaway," overseas; and releasing new material every week as part of his G.O.O.D. Fridays project.

Now, Yeezy is adding a new activity to his docket: guest appearances on others' songs.

First, Yeezy lent his skills to Lloyd Banks' "Start It Up." On Tuesday (October 12) a remix of La Roux's "In for the Kill" that contains a new verse by the MC debuted on EW.com.

"I'm going in and I'mma go hard," 'Ye raps over the dance track, his lyrics paying homage to the Drake/ Lil Wayne/ Young Jeezy collab "I'm Goin' In." "I mean, what's the point if there ain't no scars/ A little teeth marks, blood on the collar/ That's real love.

"My American psycho/ An iller version of Ike, yo," he continues. "The Thriller version of Michael/ My recital is as bright as the light show up at the Eiffel/ A werewolf up in Paris, I'm living off your vitals."

During a Q&A with the British media earlier this month, West revealed that La Roux would appear on his forthcoming project. The duo recently appeared on MTV's "The Seven," where frontwoman Elly Jackson confirmed the collaboration.

"I've been doing stuff with him the last couple [of] days," she said during the interview.

"He's a very exciting person to be around," she continued. "He's a special breed of person. He's not quite like anyone I've ever met before. He's very, very, very creative. He comes up with ideas every five seconds."

What do you think of the remix? Let us know in the comments!

On her new track "Back To December," which was released to digital-music outlets on Tuesday (October 12), Taylor Swift wants an ex to know she is really sorry for not giving him the love that he deserved.

While fans — who are already eager for her third album Speak Now, which comes out October 25 — will probably focus on guessing the subject of the ballad, it's important to note that "December" reveals a shift in Swift's songwriting. She laments the way she messed up her relationship with a seemingly perfect boyfriend, who now finds it hard to trust her.

She sings, "You've been good, busier than ever/ Small talk, work and the weather/ Your guard is up and I know why/ Because the last time you saw me/ It still burns in the back of your mind/ You gave me roses and I left them there to die."

When the chorus kicks in, Swift tries to make amends. "So this is me swallowing my pride/ Standing in front of you saying 'I'm sorry' for that night/ And I go back to December all the time/ It turns out freedom ain't nothing/ Missing you, wishing I'd realized what I had when you were mine/ I'd go back to December, turn around and make it all right/ I go back to December all time."

Even Swift admits that this song reveals a new side. She told E!, "It addresses a first for me in that I've never apologized in song. The person I wrote this song about deserves this. This is about a person who was incredible to me, just perfect to me in a relationship, and I was really careless with him."

This is the fourth song released in advance of Speak Now's late-October due date. The release of the album's first official single, "Mine," was followed by the debut of "Innocent" at the VMAs in September. The album's title track debuted on October 5.

A day after the news of his separation from wife Courteney Cox broke, David Arquette called up Howard Stern to set the record straight on the split.

"We've [been] on a trial separation for a while now," Arquette told Stern and his co-host, Robin Quivers, during Stern's Sirius Radio show on Tuesday (October 12).

Arquette told Stern that he and Cox had not been intimate for months. "I completely understand," he said. "She's in a place of wanting to be real and emotional. ... She's an emotional being, she's an amazing woman. If it doesn't feel right, she doesn't feel like bonding in that way."

Arquette went on to admit to having sex with another woman, a reversal from a statement he gave to reporters a few months ago.

"We have a really great, beautiful relationship," he told People in June. "Whenever things come up, we deal with them. We communicate. I would never do anything to jeopardize our relationship, you know what I mean? I'm committed, and we're honest with each other. ... Relationships take a lot of work."

Cox, on the other hand, revealed that she and Arquette had been to couples therapy. "We've done couples therapy in the past," she said in an interview published in the July issue of InStyle. "We're not lazy about our marriage. We have the same arguments we've had for years."

According to TMZ, a source close to the couple — who met on the set of the original "Scream" in 1995 — claims Cox and Arquette are "still friends" and maintain a business relationship.
