Justin Bieber On VMA Promo: 'I Like Girls Chasing Me'

Justin Bieber is up for a Best New Artist VMA at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, and in a promo for the September 12 show, the Biebs is tailed by his rabid female fans.

"I'm kind of like the Beatles running, and there's girls chasing after me," he told MTV News of the "Hard Day's Night"-style teaser.

Given that girls chasing him is a standard day on the job for Bieber, he admitted that faking it wasn't all that hard to do. "Everything's been going pretty smooth," he said. "I like girls chasing me, so it's good."

This isn't Bieber's first time in an MTV awards-show promo: He very hysterically appeared in a Movie Awards teaser earlier this year with host Aziz Ansari and "Hurt Locker" star Jeremy Renner. While the shoots were equally fun, the tone of this promo is a bit different. "Aziz was really fun to work with," he said of the Movie Awards promo. "It was really funny, and this is kind of more serious."

When Justin looks back on past VMAs, one of his fellow nominees stands out as a highlight. "All-time favorite moments of the VMAs? Probably when Eminem performed," he said. "I'm just a big Eminem fan, and I remember turning on the VMAs and seeing Eminem perform."

Who would he like to see take the stage this year? "I'd love to see Beyoncé perform — because she's so hot," he smiled.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.

Trae Tha Truth Gives Back With Trae Day, New Mixtape

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 03:50 AM PDT

'Sometimes people need a soldier to lean on and give them that hope and motivation,' he tells Mixtape Daily.
By Shaheem Reid

Cornerstone Credentials: Trae Tha Truth

Trae Tha Truth proudly reps his crew name ABN (that's A-holes by Nature) but when it comes to the kids, he's anything but.

The Texas truth speaker gives his all. There was footage that Trae showed us personally of him visiting a paralyzed kid in a hospital that had your favorite hip-hop editor turning on the waterworks. The youngster was moved by Trae's music and started to try to dance.

Trae's fans are gearing up for his proper LP, Tha Truth, but before that, they'll get a mixtape. He just finished his latest, Can't Ban Tha Truth. The title has to do with his lawsuit with Radio One, and the content has everything to do with the streets. Look for guest spots from Young Buck and Lupe Fiasco on the project.

A few weeks back, Trae held his annual Trae Day event in Houston where he gave back to the kids, with school supplies, carnival rides, immunizations and music. Lupe and Buck were there to support as well, as were Gorilla Zoe, Jody Breeze, NBA star Stephen Jackson, adult-film star Pinky and Yo Gotti.

"As soon as we started to perform, it started raining," Jae Millz recalled. He was there with his Young Money family Lil Chuckee, Lil Twist, Gudda Gudda, Shawt Dog and Shanell. "It started pouring. It was already on and off rain, but we still rocked anyway. Everybody came out to rock for Trae Day. This is big, man. Everybody needs to have a little bit more of this in their state. They out here. [The fans] stood out here in the rain for him. He had a jungle gym, a Ferris wheel, he did this on his own. That's love. You don't get too many artists like this. When you come across an artist like this and he rocks with you, you rock with him, you support him. The people stayed. Parking lot still full."

"We do this: rain, sleet or snow," Yo Gotti laughed about the inclement weather. "Nothing is gonna stop us from doing that.

"It's a good cause," Gotti added. "He's been doing [Trae Day] for a few years, for the kids. He's my homeboy too. He said he's gonna put it together, he wanted me to come out, I'm here."

"This is one of the most beautiful individuals that I've come into contact in the music business," Lupe Fiasco said. "He's a trusted friend, partner, family. Anything I can do to show support, especially something as beautiful as Trae Day and what it stands for — getting kids prepared to go back to school, immunizations, HIV testing — that's what I do. Any time I see somebody do that, I'm on it."

For Trae, he said he tries to make the event bigger every year.

"It's pressure, man. At the end of the day, it makes me proud that even though the rain came out, they stayed out here for the supplies, they stayed out here with the homie," Trae said. "We got to be able to touch the people, touch their hearts and give them a smile, because that's what they need. People think it's about money. ... Sometimes people need a soldier to lean on and give them that hope and motivation. So that's what I do every Trae Day. Even though it's my holiday, I made it a holiday for the city."

'Fright Night' Remake Has 'Changed A Lot,' Dave Franco Says

'That movie would not work today,' actor tells MTV News of 1985 original.

Aside from casting announcements and filming locations, the buzz surrounding the "Fright Night" remake has been relatively quiet of late.

Not that the stellar lineup isn't excitement enough, which includes Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Toni Collette and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. MTV News recently caught up with newly announced castmember Dave Franco ("Scrubs") to get insider info on his character, as well as his take on the remake of Tom Holland's 1985 campy horror classic.

"I play the a--hole," Franco said of his character. "It's fun, but I just keep getting cast as the a--hole, which I don't know how to take. ... I promise, I'm a really nice guy," he insisted, adding that his character is basically the school bully. "He has no redeeming qualities, so you're just going to hate me throughout this whole thing and be praying for my death." Subtle foreshadowing perhaps, Dave?

Regarding the new version of the '85 slasher, Franco said director Craig Gillespie has put his own spin on it. "The original is very campy, very '80s in an awesome way. ... It's a cult classic. That movie would not work today," Franco said. "It's obviously the same concept, but a lot has changed to make everything make sense now. For example, my character wasn't even in the original, so they've changed a lot and added a lot of school elements, just let it build a little more."

Franco went on to say that the one element that will remain unchanged is the gore factor.

"I've seen some footage of the bloodier scenes, and I personally am a huge horror fan. What I like about this movie is that they're really going for it," he said of the film's hard-R rating. "It is disgusting, but not in, like, a 'Saw'-type way, where it's overly horror-porn that's almost unnecessary. This one, they're definitely going for it. It's a hard R."

In the tradition of Wale, Mark Ronson, and late DJ AM and Travis Barker, house music icon Deadmau5 has been named as the house artist for the 2010 MTV VMAs. The mouse-head-wearing spinner will cue up songs all night during the September 12 event.   Deadmau5 (a.k.a. 28-year-old Toronto native Joel Zimmerman), who recently headlined a string of festivals from Coachella to Ultra Music and the Electric Daisy Carnival, is one of the most in-demand producers on the house music scene, and he'll join an already bursting roster of VMA performers that includes Kanye West, Drake and Best New Artist nominee Florence and the Machine.

"Dance wasn't always considered pop, and people like Lady Gaga and [David] Guetta and those guys really brought it out to the commercial market," he said about bringing his sound to the masses. "I'm just getting a lot more fans and God bless it, and that's the goal of being an artist is to get yourself heard by any means possible."

This year's VMAs — which air live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. (live ET, tape delayed PT) on September 12 — will also feature appearances by Nicki Minaj, Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Trey Songz, Selena Gomez and Ne-Yo. Additional performers, presenters and a host will be announced soon.

In addition to being named the house artist, DeadMau5 is also this week's MTV PUSH artist, meaning fans will have unparalleled access to his live performances, music videos, interviews and exclusive footage. Previous PUSH artists have included Jason Derulo, Trey Songz, Drake, Phoenix, Florence and the Machine, and 2 AM Club.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

Lil Wayne Talks Working Out, Playing Uno In New Letter From Jail

'The best lesson is to not come back,' he says of what he's learned in prison.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Lil Wayne posted yet another letter from prison on WeezyThanxYou.com, presumably one of his last ones as the incarcerated rapper now has fewer than 80 days left on his one-year sentence.

In his message, the Cash Money Records superstar discussed the weapons charges that landed him in Rikers Island (he's learned his lesson), his recreational activities (he's an Uno champ!) and his workout regime (he's buff, sort of).

"Well ain't nothing going on in here but the time, which seems like it's taking forever," the rapper wrote in his letter, the fifth he's posted so far. "I'm trying to make the most out of every second tho, mentally. There's some pretty cool people in here. Even though this isn't a cool place to be. I've learned plenty already and the best lesson is to not come back. Last night, I kicked ass in UNO! Anyway, that's neither here nor there. Just thought I'd let y'all know. Gotta stay hydrated. Though it's hot, I still work out. Now don't be expecting me to look like Hercules when I get out, but I should be a little bulky."

Weezy signed off by thanking many of his fans individually and personally; he often responds to letters fans have written him with a nod to the subject.

"Stay focused. Cool rap name!" he wrote to Dominick Johnson.

"I thank you for being such a longtime fan. And yes, you brought a smile to my face. So it was well worth it," he wrote to Violet Grann.

The letter might be a bit dated, as there's a message from Wayne to Chris Bosh telling the newly signed Miami Heat star he should team up with Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles. Wayne also promotes two projects of his in the letter: his EP I'm Not a Human Being and the DJ Scoob Doo-directed "Nino Brown Story 3," both slated for upcoming releases.

Young Jeezy Explains Why He Picked Plies And Yo Gotti For New LP

'You heard of them, but you don't know them,' he tells MTV News of working with the lesser-known MCs.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Young Jeezy might rock microphones alongside Jay-Z, but the Georgia rapper isn't ready to be exactly like the Brooklyn icon just yet.

The Def Jam star featured a pair of less-heralded acts in Plies ("Lose My Mind") and Yo Gotti ("All White Everything") for two of the first three singles from his forthcoming Thug Motivation 103. The Snowman said he tapped the Southern artists not only to put the spotlight on both of them, but also to show his new fans — who might not be familiar with his mixtape work — where he comes from.

"Me and Gotti kind of came up at the same time," Jeezy told MTV News. "But I respected his grind just as well as he respected mine. Same thing with Plies. We kind of cover the same routes with what we do. Of course I've sold records in other places, but I don't ever want to forget. 'Cause I was always that cat trying to get to the next level, and no one lent their hand out. I had to grind my way up. So I feel like the big homie, like, 'Come on, y'all, let me show you over here.' Just as well as showing the people over here who don't understand why I act the way I act, this is what I come from. And look who I'm bringing with me? You heard of them, but you don't know them. But now you know them."

Young Jeezy's Thug Motivation 103 is set for a September 28 release. In addition to the two aforementioned singles, Jeezy has also released the Lil Jon collaboration "Jizzle."

He also recently put out a mixtape, 1,000 Grams, Vol. 1, which featured the track "Death B4 Dishonor," a song seemingly directed at Rick Ross. Jeezy, however, denied the charge, saying the record is "not a dis."

James Cameron Discusses Sending 3-D Cameras (And People) To Mars

Posted: 23 Jan 2001 09:00 AM PST

'I want to make films about this and get people excited about [space] exploration,' the 'Avatar' director says.

For Oscar-winning director James Cameron, whose box-office clout at this point seems unmatchable, making mega-blockbusters like "Avatar" and "Titanic" might not be enough. So next year, Cameron is taking his filmmaking expertise to the final frontier.

In April, it was announced that Cameron had partnered with NASA to help build a 3-D camera mounted atop the Mars rover Curiosity for a mission planned for launch next year. When MTV News caught up with the filmmaker, we asked if, in addition to sending 3-D cameras to Mars, he's thinking about how to send humans there.

"Oh, yeah, I've been thinking about the issues of sending human beings to Mars for a long time," he admitted during a press day for the re-release of "Avatar." "I started 11 years ago working on a Mars project that led me to doing a lot of research, meeting a lot of people at NASA, getting involved with people, and then at a certain point, a couple years ago, they said, 'Wait a minute, this guy knows a lot about Mars, he knows a lot about 3-D cameras, zoom lenses, motion photography, all the things we're incorporating into this new camera system. Why don't we bring him in?' "

Cameron said one thing led to another, and suddenly, a partnership was born. "I'm actually on the team developing the new camera for the Mars Science Laboratory, which launches next year," he said, adding that if all goes well, we could see 3-D photos of the red planet in the very near future.

"Theoretically, we will have a motion-image stereoscopic camera on the surface of Mars in 2011, and it will be making the first 3-D movie on Mars — well, it's not a movie, but we'll be taking 3-D shots."

As for humans making the trip, Cameron added that it will require a couple of things — namely, a shift in our national interest.

"The public has to want it — that's number one — because it has to be paid for. I think commercial, new, lean enterprises like [PayPal co-founder] Elon Musk's company SpaceX, which is going to be creating human transportation to the space station. They're a good candidate to build the systems that could get us to Mars, for example," he said. "But it still requires the national will, and right now, that national will, quite frankly, isn't up to the task. People don't care about it enough, which is why I want to make films about this and get people excited about exploration."

Cameron ended his thoughts with a question for the public: "Frankly, what would you rather spend your money on: pointless wars in the Middle East to support our oil addiction or going to another planet?"

What do you think about Cameron's involvement with NASA and space exploration? Let us know in the comments!

Nicki Minaj Told Jay Sean She Was 'Going In' On '2012'

Young Money rapper is uniquely 'fun and playful' on the track, British crooner tells MTV News.

It will come as no surprise to fans of Jay Sean that his new single, "2012 (It Ain't the End)," boasts bars by Young Money princess Nicki Minaj. After all, his U.S. debut single, "Down," features Lil Wayne, which was followed by Lil Jon and Sean Paul jumping on "Do You Remember."

Still, the Hounslow hero (Jay Sean was born near the Wimbledon site in West London) was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call from Miss Minaj earlier this year.

"It was actually a surprise for me," Sean told MTV News last week. "Nicki Minaj heard ['2012'], she called me and ... she was like, 'I love it! It's sick. I'm going in on this!'

"I'm a fan of Nicki's. I think she's incredible," he continued. "And I had wanted to work with her for a while. But when she picked this song out herself, I was like, 'Go ahead. Bless it. Please.' "

Nicki Minaj is one of the most successful hip-hop artists at the moment, all before her debut album is released. And Jay Sean is pleased not only because her feature in "2012" brings the gravity of her presence, but that she attacked the song with a swagger different from her usual form.

"A testament to a great artist is the fact that they are able to interpret the song for what it is," Sean said. "Now, Nicki is a rapper. This is a pop record. She took the message of having fun and enjoying yourself, living like it's the end, living every minute like it's the last, and she put that vibe and that swagger on the track ... and that voice is fun and playful on it. It was great."

Minaj also appears in the video for "2012", which was shot last month in Los Angeles.

Jay Sean's sophomore U.S. effort, Freeze Time, is tentatively set for a November 2 release.

After she reportedly tried to commit suicide by overdosing on medication, Fantasia was released from the hospital last week. Now, with her third album, Back to Me, set for release on August 24, the singer is ready to begin promoting the LP, according to her label, J Records.

In a press release, the label said that the singer has a "renewed commitment to her music and her fans" since the incident. "I can't thank my fans enough for their prayers and support during such a challenging time. It has given me the motivation to get back to work and honor the commitments I made to promote Back to Me," Fantasia said in a statement. "I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this album and I pray that everyone enjoys it as much as I do."

Fantasia's busy schedule will include stops at "Good Morning America" (August 24), "Lopez Tonight"(August 25), "106 & Park" (September 8), "Live With Regis and Kelly" (September 9) and "The Wendy Williams Show" (September 10).

Currently, her single "Bittersweet" sits at #10 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. For her album, Fantasia worked with a number of hitmakers, including Ne-Yo, Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony as well as Rico Love and Jim Jonsin.

The good news comes just a week after the season-three "American Idol" victor was rushed to the hospital after she was found in a North Carolina home. "She has been lifted up by the outpouring of love and support from her fans," Barrino's manager, Brian Dickens, said in a statement to MTV News. "She is more committed than ever to her daughter and her work because they are her heart, her soul and inspiration."

'The Expendables' Arsenal: A Weapon-By-Weapon Guide

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 03:03 AM PDT

Weapons supervisor Kent Johnson leads us through the biggest, baddest arms from the action hit.
By Adam Rosenberg

Dolph Lundgren and Sylvester Stallone in "The Expendables"
Photo: Millennium Films

Sylvester Stallone proved that his action star still burns brightly with the box-office-winning performance of "The Expendables," which he wrote, directed and starred in. The veteran of action classics like "First Blood" and "Demolition Man" ceded some screen time in this latest outing to action stars of yesterday and today, particularly the core "Expendables" team of Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews and Randy Couture.

As impressive as that lineup is, the collected firepower of the group is what makes them really scary. Just try to identify some of those guns and blades in the heat of combat — it's impossible. So MTV News got on the phone with Kent Johnson, property master and weapons supervisor for "The Expendables," to get the inside scoop on who used what and why. For those who haven't seen the movie, spoilers ahead. You've been warned.

Handguns and Revolvers
Stallone actually makes use of three handguns in the movie: a pair of semi-automatic pistols and a more traditional six-shooter, the sort that you'd see in a Western — only far more dangerous-looking. Johnson identified the pistols as custom-made Kimber Gold Combat IIs. "It's a .45 [caliber]," Johnson said. "Kimber put them together for us. Sly wanted something a little bit different, a little more unique, a little more of an individual style, so we were able to make the body of the gun a little darker with black grips and little chrome pieces on it. Just very subtle, to make it more personal."

As anyone who's seen the movie knows, Stallone fires those twin pistols at a remarkable rate. According to Johnson, that's perfectly realistic and all based on the skill of the shooter, who in this case is one of the most accomplished action stars of the past 30 years. "A gun will fire as quick as you let the gun work, because it's a gas-activated gun — meaning the gas in the chamber causes the recoil — which causes everything to work in the gun and the next shell coming up. So as fast as you could possibly pull the trigger is how fast that gun will."

Compare that to Sly's revolver, which is an "1873 six-shooter with a 3-inch barrel" seen in the first and last scenes of the movie. "It's a single-action gun, which means it won't cock, it won't fire like [the Kimbers], where you just pull the trigger and it'll go bang, click, bang, click. With a single-action, you have to pull the hammer back," Johnson explained.

"[Stallone] was using it like the old Western style, like a fanner-type gun. What it is, is you have your finger on the trigger pulled at all times, and you fire and rotate, fire and rotate, by pulling the hammer back on the gun [and then letting it go], which is what a lot of quick-draw and fast-draw artists [do]."

Shotguns and Rifles
As cool as Sly's paired pistols are, the undisputed star weapon of the movie is Hale Caesar's (Terry Crews) automatic shotgun, an "MPS AA-12 Sledgehammer." The weapon itself is a beastly thing, capable of laying down rapid-fire shotgun blasts. What makes it a force to be reckoned with in "The Expendables" however is the ammo that Caesar fills it with, which he describes in great detail during one particular scene.

Said Johnson: "It has fins and it explodes before it hits the target. ... It's like a little missile, a little ground-to-air missile. You could load a shotgun shell with a solid pellet, you could load it with birdshot, you could load it with buckshot, you could load it with all different things. The way we did it [in 'The Expendables'] was, basically, [we built it] to take down buildings, and it does. In real life, this shotgun would do pretty close to what you see on the screen."

Even more frightening is the idea that such a destructive bit of firepower exists. It does, Johnson said — sort of. "There's something like that that does exist, yeah. We basically made up our own shell, but we copied one that was a prototype that is in development for the military."

A range of assault rifles are also on display in the movie, though the climactic battle is highlighted by two in particular. First, you have the bad guys, led by David Zayas' General Garza. "All of Garza's military guys we had [equipped] with AK-47s," Johnson revealed. "Which is the right gun, [because], basically, they work all the time. So the AK-47, which is the old traditional standard workhorse, versus our boys with their modern weaponry."

In the case of the Expendables, "modern weaponry" is one tactical assault rifle in particular: the Noveske N4. "In the real world, it's high-tactical, more in Europe than the States. It's a high-caliber, it's a very uniquely balanced weapon, a close-quarters weapon. It's short and has a lot of firepower," Johnson said.

As with most of the other weapons on display in the movie, the N4 was Stallone's pick. "He liked the look; it works off of rail systems, so we were able to put smaller but better sights on it. We were able to put better scopes on it. Visually, it was just a better, more futuristic-but-contemporary look without getting into silver [plating] or other crazy things. It's just a real kick-ass weapon."

The Sharpened Blade
Not all of the weapons in "The Expendables" go boom. Some slice through the air with nary a sound. Dolph Lundgren's Gunner Jensen and Jason Statham's Lee Christmas both make notable use of bladed weapons. "[Lundgren's] Bowie knife ... that was a Gil Hibben. That's the knife that Gunner gives Christmas [at the beginning of the movie].

"Gil Hibben made a custom knife for us, for Sly. He and Sly have worked throughout the years together," Johnson continued. "It was a white-bone handle and had the Expendables logo, the same logo that was on the motorcycles. It's a traditional Bowie knife, but he custom-made it for us for the movie. The design was Gil's, but he [used] some subtleties in the handle, very small little subtle things to make it a unique piece."

Then there's Statham's Christmas, who excels at killing silently from a distance with his throwing knives. "That was director's choice on the [throwing] knives to have a little ring at the top so [Statham] could flip them and do different things," Johnson explained. "We worked in different ways on making [Statham's draw look right]. We went from a shoulder draw to a hip draw to kind of like a gun draw almost. That's pretty much what we ended up with, where we had the three knives on each side of his hips.

"That was the director's idea in working with Jason, what made him feel comfortable and made him feel like he could be as quick as anybody with a gun with that knife. You've got to be able to get that knife and then be able to get the second one and the third one. He always carried at least six knives with him at all times when he was in his combat gear."

Finding the Right Weapons for the Job
With all the killing force detailed above, the obvious question is: Where does it all come from? Johnson, being the man who makes it all happen, has the answer.

"There's different prop rental houses and different weapon rental people. I'll work with the director and what his vision is for the movie, and basically I'll go out and bring him an assortment of guns. Sly's even gone to the gun room, multiple times, where he wanted to look at things," Johnson said. He's worked on Stallone projects since 1989's "Tango & Cash," and on "Big Trouble in Little China," "Death Wish II," "The Final Countdown" and others before that. "There's one shop that I work with extensively called Independent Studio Service. They're in Sun Valley, California, and they have the biggest weaponry [selection] probably in the world for the movie business," he said.

The guns themselves are the other key to the puzzle. These are all actual weapons that have been converted for prop use, though in most cases converting them back to live weapons is possible. Some of them still are live weapons; they're simply loaded with blanks.

"A gun with blank ammo, all you're doing is making the gun think it's firing a bullet," Johnson explained. "They're all real guns, they all have been modified to shoot blanks. Sly's 3-inch 1873 six-shooter that he had in the small of his back, you could put live rounds in that gun and fire that gun because it's a non-plugged gun. Non-plugged meaning, when you fire a semi-automatic or a full automatic, you actually plug the barrel of the gun and control the amount of gas that stays there to make the gun think that it's shooting a live round out.

"So you're fooling the gun. All of these guns that are converted for studio use can be converted back to live fire."

Michael Douglas To Undergo Treatment For Throat Tumor

Michael Douglas is set to begin chemotherapy after doctors recently discovered a tumor in his throat.

People magazine reports that the "Wall Street" actor's doctors expect Douglas to make a full recovery as soon as he completes eight weeks of treatment, which will reportedly include a combination of radiation and chemotherapy.

"I am very optimistic," Douglas said in a statement to the magazine.

No word yet on how the treatment will affect his work schedule, as Douglas has a lot on his plate, including promotion for his return to the character Gordon Gekko in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," which opens at the end of September.

Douglas is also set to appear alongside a slew of stars in Steven Soderbergh's upcoming action thriller "Knockout." The cast includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michael Angarano, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton.

When MTV News last caught up with the 65-year-old actor, he appeared happy and healthy at the Film Society of Lincoln Center Honors, where he received the year's top honor, presented to Hollywood legends.

At the time, Douglas was hard-pressed to pick his favorite role from his four-decade-long career in the business. "You work as hard on your failures as on your successes," he said. "I'd say tonight, particularly because [director] Curtis [Hanson] is here, I liked 'Wonder Boys' a lot. 'Solitary Man' is right up there. I'm real happy with my batting average. I look at the rest, and it's pretty good. You pick your spots."

Drake Made 'Karaoke' Beat 'Personal,' Francis And The Lights Say

'He actually made it make sense in a way that didn't make sense to me before,' producer Francis Farewell Starlite tells MTV News.

Drake's Thank Me Later was produced mostly by his trusted collaborator Noah "40" Shebib, but the Toronto lyricist ventured into the studio with an array of hip-hop beatsmiths for his debut, from Swizz Beatz to Kanye West.

One standout on the project was indie-rock act Francis and the Lights. Frontman Francis Farewell Starlite produced the second song on Thank Me Later, the muted "Karaoke."

After he signed on to tour with Drake, Starlite was asked by the rapper's camp if he had any music available. Starlite struggled while trying craft the right number, before ultimately deciding to give up a track he was saving for himself.

"My immediate reaction was to go into the studio with [my producer], who I work with on most of my things, and we tried to make beats," he told MTV News. "And we sent one and heard nothing; we sent another and heard nothing. And I sort of realized: It has to be deeper than that. [For] Drake and his people, it has to be good above all, before it's any genre or anything. So I had a song that I had been working on for a while that I knew was good. I knew it was something special. And I made the decision to give it to him and let it go in that way. So I tracked ['Karaoke'] in one night in the middle of [recording] my record. I sent it to them, and I heard back in, like, three minutes," he laughed.

The result was a minimalist number on which Drake deftly mixes soft crooning before building up into a straightforward rap about a relationship gone awry. "I remember when you thought I was joking/ Now I'm off singing karaoke, further than I ever been," Drake sings. "So if you gotta go, if there's any way I can help."

The song parallels material more likely to be on a Francis and the Lights project than anything in a retailer's rap bin. Starlite said Drake didn't tweak the music much, but admitted the Young Money star's vocals gave the song a vitality it initially lacked.

"He made it better, unquestionably, from what I had," the singer said. "And that's a good feeling. He made it very personal, but making some very subtle changes and doing his thing on it, obviously, with the verses. He actually made it make sense in a way that didn't make sense to me before."

What do you think of Francis and the Lights' production work for Drake? Let us know in the comments!

Kanye West Remixes 'Power' With Nicki Minaj, John Legend, More

'I might have to put out 5 albums this year ... My spirit is full,' Kanye tweeted.
By Gil Kaufman

Now that Kanye West is back on his grind, the LV Don appears determined to push harder than ever to produce unique music. Case in point: Over the past five days, in addition to performing at an intimate club show on Thursday, where he covered songs by Rihanna and Billy Joel and was joined by Estelle, Yeezy hit the studio to work on a remix of "Power" with an all-star cast.

Given his new status as the Titan of Twitter, he, of course, tweeted about the progress of the sessions. "Scheduled studio visits 2day, Nikki [Minaj], John Legend, Mos Def, Swizz Beatz, Pusha T, Phillip Lim," he wrote of a remix session that roped in everyone from the newlywed producer he has called one of the greatest of all time (Beatz), to Clipse member T and piano man Legend, who tickled the ivories for 'Ye at Thursday night's show.

He likened the sessions to the all-star power summits of the early jazz era, writing, "remember jazz musicians used to collab and do 4 song albums or James Brown used to just keep dropping sh-- back to back." In that spirit, West added, "I might have to put out 5 albums this year ... My spirit is full ... My heart is open ... People want new music ... I can't hold it back."

And that wasn't all. He uploaded a photo from the studio that featured him with Beatz and Def, as well as another pal who knows a thing or two about harnessing the power: Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. "Kobe helped me finish my #POWER remix verse ... Just building on the concept of #POWE... and Mos helped me find the 'old me' lyrically," he explained early Sunday morning.

After a "super late" night in the lab with Mos that lasted early into Sunday morning, West said he was feeling so inspired that he actually had to unplug himself before he laid down the longest verse in rap history. "I had to cut my POWER remix verse short to not over do it with the million bar verse like the 2nd verse of 'See Me Now,' " he wrote. "There's so many ways to break down the subject of power ... me and Kobe went in on it... Perfect person to help out on that."

In addition to teasing a possible Justin Bieber/Raekwon collabo, throwing out some random props to M.I.A., Matt & Kim, and Fiona Apple, and taking a break to go jogging (in Lanvin gear, of course), 'Ye ended what sounded like a sleepless weekend on a creative and emotional high. "Sometimes I can't control my excitement," he wrote Sunday afternoon. "So happy ... so creative ... in the studio ... ready to create ... finished 'Power' verse ... more music."

And, in keeping with his status as the new pied piper poet of Twitter, 'Ye — who will appear at this year's MTV VMAs on September 12 — wrapped the creative marathon with an early morning tweet on Monday that summed up his new philosophy: "I'm just tryna keep it symmetrical." Right.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12.

Meet 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Star Rooney Mara

Before landing the dream role of Lisbeth Salander, Mara starred in 'Nightmare on Elm Street' remake and more.

Get used to hearing the name Rooney Mara.

After an extensive search that reportedly focused on A-list names like Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" director David Fincher selected Mara to play the role of dark and damaged Lisbeth Salander. While hardly a newcomer to Hollywood — she starred in this year's "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and her sister is "Iron Man 2" star Kate — Mara remains largely unknown to the public.

That's all about to change. "Dragon Tattoo" is based on the first of Stieg Larsson's best-selling crime novels, a trilogy that has been published in 44 countries and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. Anticipation for Fincher's adaptation, slated to get an Oscar-friendly December 2011 release, is already running high, with every casting rumor — Kristen Stewart as Salander? Ellen Page? — getting wide media attention.

So just who is Mara?

MTV News first met her in June 2009 on the set of "Elm Street." By this point, she had appeared in a few low-profile roles on the big and small screens. But the remake of the beloved horror flick would give the actress her widest exposure to date. And taking on the iconic role of Nancy — originated in 1984 by Heather Langenkamp — left Mara more than a little nervous.

"It's quite stressful," she confessed. "There are big shoes to fill, and people love Nancy. There's a lot of pressure to not let people down."

How will Mara deal with the burden of portraying Salander? As with "Elm Street" and Nancy, there is already a cinematic Salander. The Swedish version of "Dragon Tattoo," starring Noomi Rapace, opened in the U.S. earlier this year to wide acclaim. Perhaps, though, Mara's success on "Elm Street" has boosted her confidence: The film notched an impressive $33 million opening in April.

A few months earlier, Mara had appeared in a supporting role alongside Michael Cera in "Youth in Revolt." And by the time "Elm Street" hit theaters, she'd already lined up another high-profile flick, a prominent part in Fincher's "The Social Network," the story of the founding of Facebook, which arrives in October.

Before then, Mara will already be in Sweden, where "Dragon Tattoo" is expected to begin shooting in September. Last year on the "Elm Street" set, Mara revealed to us how she prepares for each day in front on the camera by creating specific playlists of songs that fit the day's shoot.

"It's sort of like reading my diary. It's very personal," she said, at first resisting the urge to open up about her musical tastes. But she eventually told us she listens to Red and Three Days Grace when she needs to get pumped up and, when she has a somber scene, Radiohead and every cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World" she can find.

"I have a playlist for Nancy for just every day, and I have a specific playlist for the stuff I have to do today, which is really hard-core and I really have to kick ass today," she explained.

Beyonce Says She's 'A Feminist, In A Way'

Singer also talks about retiring alter ego Sasha Fierce and starting a family, in You magazine.

Whether it's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" or the Destiny's Child classic "Independent Women," most of Beyoncé's catalog consists of strong female-empowerment anthems. So it's no surprise that the singer considers herself to be a feminist.

In an interview with the U.K.'s You magazine, the pop star opens up about the importance of female companionship, not needing to hide behind Sasha Fierce and her much-talked-about baby plans.

"I think I am a feminist, in a way. It's not something I consciously decided I was going to be; perhaps it's because I grew up in a singing group with other women, and that was so helpful to me," she told the magazine. "It kept me out of so much trouble and out of bad relationships. My friendships with my girls are just so much a part of me that there are things I am never going to do that would upset that bond. I never want to betray that friendship, because I love being a woman and I love being a friend to other women."

Most recently, Beyoncé has certainly made her share of female friends in the industry. In the past year, the singer has collaborated with Lady Gaga ("Video Phone" and "Telephone") and Alicia Keys ("Put It in a Love Song").

While the singer might always have female besties, there's one thing she's cut out of the picture: alter ego Sasha Fierce. Earlier this year, the pop star revealed that she "killed" Sasha, and now she said the alter-ego absence is due to her newfound self-awareness.

"I don't need Sasha so much anymore, because these days, I know who I am. It takes time to figure out who you are, and I am still discovering different things about myself. As I am exposed to different experiences, I think, 'Oh, I like this. I didn't know I liked this,' " she explained. "That's the journey of life that is so exciting. More and more, I know who I am, I know what I like, I know what I want, and that makes me feel so free."

In fact, B already has her eye on some personal life goals. "My ambition is to continue to learn about the world and to eventually have a family," she said. And while Beyoncé remained coy about when she and husband Jay-Z will expand the Carter family, she hinted that there's really "no dates, no times" to motherhood. "It will happen when I am ready."

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag seem to be well on their way to finalizing their divorce. The former "Hills" stars have reportedly taken the next step to dissolving their marriage, with Montag authorizing the service of her divorce papers to Pratt, TMZ reports.

Last week, Pratt reportedly received and signed the papers. This means the divorce can become finalized six months from the time Pratt received the documents. Montag's lawyer, Jodeane Farrell, said, "Both Heidi and Spencer are in agreement to settle their divorce as quickly as possible without the need of a court appearance."

While the pair are briskly moving along to the end of their marriage since tying the knot in April 2009, they have each been tweeting about their next moves. Pratt has been busy working on a 3-D beach movie, while Montag, who dropped out of a reality show with pal Jen Bunney, has been busy working on music and "finally hav[ing] some girl time in my life for the first time in years!" She added: "Cleaning house and getting rid of my old life, it feels good to live fresh."

Earlier this month, Montag commented on the state of her marriage to Pratt, noting that "this has been a heartbreaking experience to go through, and it's not that I don't love Spencer. We just want different things in life."

She explained that the two are trying to work through the last few steps before they can finally be divorced. "We don't live together," Montag said. "Spencer and I are finally moving forward with our lives, but with any divorce, there is much to work through. We've been together almost five years — there are assets to divide, work to be discussed, and we share our puppies."

The search for Lisbeth Salander is over.

Rooney Mara ("A Nightmare on Elm Street") has been cast as the motorcycle-driving computer hacker in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," David Fincher's upcoming adaptation of the best-selling Swedish crime thriller, according to a Sony press release.

Mara nabbed the highly sought-after role following an exhaustive search said to include names like Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page and Mia Wasikowska. Late last month, Mara, who stars in Fincher's "Social Network," was reportedly contending with four other actresses for the part. Now, Salander officially belongs to Mara.

She'll be joined by Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist, the disgraced journalist who is hired to investigate a decades-old missing-persons case and convinces Salander to assist the search. Based on the first of Stieg Larsson's three "Millennium" novels, the film will reportedly co-star Robin Wright as Erika Berger (Blomkvist's business partner and occasional lover) and Stellan Skarsgård as Martin Vanger (the brother of the missing woman), though the Sony press release did not mention either of these names.

The film is set to begin shooting in September in Sweden, with an eye on a December 21, 2011, release date. Fincher told MTV News last month that he planned to set the film in Sweden, rather than Americanize the story line. "What, are you going to put it in Seattle?" he laughed.

According to Deadline New York, Mara's deal includes an option for Larsson's two sequels, "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest." Contrary to earlier rumors, Fincher told us he will not film either of the sequels in conjunction with the first film.

"No, there's no plans for that right now," he said. "You got to make one that people want to see a sequel to before you can make a sequel."

Chris Bosh Says Rick Ross' Welcome To Miami Is 'Cool'

'They didn't have any problem expressing their opinions of their want for us down there,' Miami Heat's Bosh says.

Oh, you crazy Vinny Chase. You wait until you're over 30 years old before you decide to start riding the white horse. And we're not talking about the kind of stallion the Lone Ranger gallops in on either. Sunday night on HBO's "Entourage," the lead character had a wild party with loud music and a bunch of friends. And one of the guests in attendance was none other than Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat. The All-Star was playing it cool, chilling by the bar, saying what's up to Turtle.

"It's funny, you watch the show, you see how [this season is] going. I don't know how it's going to be 'Hey yo Chris. How is it going?' but the setting is in Vince's house, at a party," Bosh explained last week in New York. "It's regular. I brought the nice, wholesome vibe to the party ... I brought all the chocolate milk."

Bosh was joking about the milk part. He just became a spokesman for the "Got Milk?" campaign, promoting awareness to the children that chocolate milk is healthy ("It's good fuel for you after workouts as far as putting back proteins and carbs is concerned," he said). Bosh also just finished a documentary that takes us through the journey of his free-agency period, when he left the Toronto Raptors for the Miami Heat, and said that acting is something he could see himself venturing into in the future if the opportunity presents itself.

"That's always something that I'm very interested in. I love movies, I love TV shows," he said. "That's something I want to get into eventually. You never know what you like until you try it."

The Heat start the season in October and Bosh, along with his other superstar teammates Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, has already been embraced by the city, especially the hip-hop community.

"They didn't have any problem expressing their opinions of their want for us down there," Bosh said of rap luminaries such as DJ Khaled and Rick Ross being a part of the welcome wagon. "After 'The Decision,' it was known we were going down there. Somebody told me they saw Rick Ross on the Internet saying he was so excited about basketball, and he just had an album come out. I think it's cool that everybody's excited about us down there."

Kid Rock Busts Out Six New Songs During Hometown Show

Rocker says new album Born Free will hit stores in November.
By Gil Kaufman

What better place for Kid Rock to pull the curtain back on a six-pack of new songs than Detroit? The budding suds entrepreneur — who just launched the official website for his American Badass Beer — treated fans at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, to a hits-packed series of three sold-out shows that featured the live debut of songs from his long-in-the-works next album, Born Free.

In addition to the new hometown anthem "Times Like These," which he unveiled last summer during a similar set of shows at Comerica Park, The Detroit News reported that the new tunes include the album's title track and first single. The song was described as a patriotic, "chugging, Springsteen-like rocker" that showed serious promise thanks to Americana-dripping lyrics referencing rivers, canyons, the sun and the moon that he said was inspired by his trips overseas to visit U.S. troops.

Rock also played the midtempo "Slow My Roll," which is about, well, slowing down and taking it all in, and the somber "Rock On," which he described as a tune about a "dark" relationship that chronicled a rough breakup. "Feels Good to Me" came off like a 1970s FM-radio rock shuffle and featured a sax solo.

The rapping rocker also reportedly mentioned several times that the Detroit-area shows would be his "last hurrah" before he puts the finishing touches on the album and hits the road in earnest next year. Rock has been laying low over the past year as he worked on the follow-up to 2007's slow-burn hit album, Rock n Roll Jesus.

Billboard reported that the disc, originally slated for September 7, will not come out until November 16, according to a message flashed on the onstage video screen at the end of Saturday night's show. A spokesperson for Rock could not be reached for comment at press time.

Among the other new songs Rock played were the snaky, Rolling Stones-like lunch-pail rocker "God Bless Saturday," according to Billboard, which also noted that the uptempo "Feels Good to Me" will feature country singer Trace Adkins on the album.

In addition to playing covers of songs by Sly & the Family Stone and country rebel Jamey Johnson, Rock was joined by "Scream 4" actor David Arquette, who danced onstage during "Three Sheets to the Wind" on Saturday night. Johnson opened Sunday's show, and one of Rock's idols, Detroit rock legend Bob Seger, dueted with Rock and Johnson on his hit "Turn the Page."

Why 'Expendables' Soared, 'Scott Pilgrim' Crashed At Box Office

Posted: 15 Aug 2010 11:57 PM PDT

Megastars, marketing and hard-core action won out over comic-book adaptation.
By Eric Ditzian

At one end of the cinema landscape this weekend stood a bunch of past-their-prime action heroes with quick trigger fingers and arthritic knees. At the other end lounged some hipster ass-kickers, spouting jaded one-liners and every so often brawling like "Mortal Kombat" warriors.

Given such a matchup, you might be forgiven for thinking that 64-year-old Sylvester Stallone and "The Expendables" had no chance in competing with Michael Cera's "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" at the box office. But Sly dominated, even outperforming early estimates, pulling in $35 million. Meanwhile, "Scott Pilgrim," which was tracking poorly to begin with, managed only a disappointing $10.5 million.

So what happened? Why did "Expendables" kill it, while "Scott Pilgrim" couldn't expand its audience from the niche fans who went all foamy-at-the-mouth during the flick's Comic-Con panel?

"Lionsgate is the best in the business at targeting adult men with ultra-violent fare," said Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru. " 'Expendables' worked well at the box office because it offered a value-pack of stars and had great marketing. Stallone by himself doesn't sell, but backed by an army of familiar faces, it became a can't-miss action film for many people. The misleading push of how Stallone, [Arnold] Schwarzenegger, and [Bruce] Willis were doing their first action movie together probably fooled a few folks into buying tickets too."

Yet action flicks have been anything but reliable box-office draws this summer. Films such as "The A-Team" and "Knight and Day" — like "Expendables," flicks starring well-known talent and not dressed up with 3-D or a ton of CG work — underperformed this year. Did "Expendables" simply benefit from a vastly superior marketing campaign, or was there something about its particular brand of action that resonated with the public? Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, argues that Sly's flick benefited from an emphasis on grenades instead of laughs.

" 'A-Team' and 'Knight and Day' are action/comedies, whereas 'The Expendables' is a balls-to-the-wall action flick," he said. "When action junkies want their fix, hardcore is the only answer, and until 'The Expendables' was released, we hadn't seen a straight-up action flick all summer long."

"Scott Pilgrim," conversely, arrived on the scene during a year that had already seen lesser-known comic properties like "Kick-Ass" and "Jonah Hex" fail to connect with mainstream audiences. Box-office experts cited a number of factors to explain why "Scott Pilgrim," based on graphic novels that have become cult hits but are largely unfamiliar to most moviegoers, didn't become a breakout hit.

" 'Scott Pilgrim' is an awesome film, just like 'Kick-Ass' was, but it's too cool for its own good," Bock said. "When you only appeal to teens and hipsters, you're limiting your audience, and your film better only cost $30 million. Pilgrim cost at least twice that amount. Don't spend more than $30 million on films that are too hip for the general populace."

Given its limited demographic appeal, the movie was simply a huge financial risk for Universal. Still, as we've seen with "Expendables," a stellar marketing campaign can work wonders at the box office. Phil Contrino, editor at BoxOffice.com, said that the studio's marketing effort could have "played up the romance a little bit more, [which] may have brought in more female moviegoers, but it wouldn't have made a huge difference."

"It's a film with a narrow appeal and Michael Cera is far from a reliable draw at the box office," he added. "It's destined to be a cult hit and it could make up for its lackluster theatrical performance with strong sales on home-viewing platforms."

Pandya points to the summer's crowded release schedule as another reason for the movie's $10.5 million opening (which put it in fifth place, just behind "Inception" in its fifth weekend). " 'Scott Pilgrim' could have worked better at a different time of the year," he said. "The target audience of young people tend to get tapped out of cash by late summer and become even more picky with their few dollars left, especially this year with so much more they have to spend on 3-D movies. Studios and production companies should think more about costs before turning comic properties into movies, given how flooded the market is becoming. Fans don't have the time and money to see everything."
