Green Day Bring The Power, Phoenix Add The Finesse: Saturday At Lollapalooza

Saturday night's headliners were a scintillating study of contrasts.

CHICAGO — Unless you happen to play in one of Perry Farrell's bands (and that band happens to be Jane's Addiction), the opportunity to headline Lollapalooza doesn't come around all that often. So, if you get your shot, you might as well go for it. And that was very much the mindset of both of Saturday's (August 7) bill-toppers, though, much like Friday night's Lady Gaga/Strokes face-off, Green Day and Phoenix were a study in contrasts. Both definitely rocked, they just did in very different ways.

Green Day, of course, pummeled, powered, and pulled out all the stops during their two-plus hour set, reaching deep into their expansive back catalog and using every crowd-pleasing trick in the rock-band hat. And then they invented a few more stunts just for the sake of it. Seriously, if it weren't for the city of Chicago's noise ordinances, they'd probably still be at it.

Bottle-blonde Billie Joe Armstrong bounded back and forth across the stage, led the crowd in countless sing-a-longs, pranced, danced, collapsed, rose again, and at one point, played a solo with his guitar behind his head. While standing on one leg. He pulled kids young and old from the crowd--letting them sing choruses (on "East Jesus Nowhere") or entire songs ("Longview," which was belted out by a kid who totally, completely killed it), assisting them in stage dives, or fire off water cannons. He shouted "Chicago!" more times than the entire Daley clan combined. He donned a feather boa. He mooned the crowd. He fired off T-shirt cannons and toilet paper guns. And at no point did he appear to even be the slightest bit tired.

"They said they're gonna pull the plug on us at 10 ... I told them to kiss my f--king ass, we'll play for as long as we want," he shouted at one point.

"You paid your hard-earned money to buy a ticket to tonight," he yelled later in the set. "It is my honor and my privilege to give you the best f---ing show you've ever seen in your life."

And judging by the boundless energy displayed by his Green Day mates, he wasn't the only one feeling this way. Mike Dirnt scowled and strutted, always keeping his bass thuddingly precise. Tre Cool vamped it up on an extended version of the Isley Brother's "Shout" (while wearing a sun hat, horn-rimmed spectacles and a red brazier, it should be noted), and kept the back beat cracking. At this point, Green Day are a poundingly precise Rock and Roll machine, as evidenced by the covers they effortlessly worked into the set--everything from the opening riffs of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man," and the first verse of the Guns 'N Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" to the chorus of the Beatles' "Hey Jude"--and the sheer spectacle of their show, an eye-popping, ear-splitting series of pyro bursts and fireworks explosions.

Oh, and obviously, the songs were pretty terrific too: "21st Century Breakdown" spanned several changes but was always focused and crowd-uniting, "Hitching A Ride" thundered along and eventually broke into a fiery crescendo, "She" was zip-gun speedy, and "Brain Stew/Jaded" started crunchy and static, stretched into a lengthy jam (complete with water/T-shirt cannon interlude), then came rifling home at a breakneck pace. There were a dozen other highlights. Simply put, Green Day know how to put on a rock show. A big, loud, bombastic one. And when they finally closed with "Jesus of Suburbia," they certainly didn't need a break ... but the crowd might very well have.

Meanwhile, on the other side of Grant Park, there was a rock show of a different sort happening. On the one hand, Phoenix aren't the typical Lollapalooza headliner. For one thing, they are French -- as in, extremely French. Their brand of European formalism doesn't necessarily jive with the freewheeling energy on the grounds at Lolla.

Then again, they're really the ideal headliner for Saturday night. Their jaunty mix of jangly indie rock, easy singalong melodies and groovy, dance-friendly electronic froth sound like the favorite band of one of the characters on Perry Farrell's Satellite Party record. After a warm day at Lollapalooza, they provided a soothing antidote to the heat and the growing exhaustion among the festival-goers. Their smooth, easy tunes cascaded over Grant Park and engulfed the thousands gathered in a swirl of Euro-disco-rock giddiness.

Frontman Thomas Mars seemed genuinely touched by the heavy crowd gathered for their headlining set. They turned up the energy immediately, kicking off the set with "Lisztomania," the kickoff track from their Grammy-winning album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Though the clearly committed crowd greeted the group's older tunes (like "Long Distance Call" and "Everything Is Everything") warmly, it was the Wolfgang songs that really won the evening. The ubiquitous "1901" surfed its killer synth riff into the ether, while "Lasso" inspired all sorts of manic dance moves among the revelers.

It was a fitting end to a funky, groovy day at Lollapalooza. Cut Copy preempted the Phoenix set with a batch of pounding beat science, Spoon brought a classic rock swagger to their deep catalog, AFI super-charged the afternoon with a blast of glammy goth and Against Me! laid out the huge riffs of White Crosses for a refreshing aggro jolt. With 48 hours of Lollapalooza in the books, the energy remains high and the performances continue to deliver in surprising ways. Just probably not at the same level Green Day did. Or Phoenix, too.

TINLEY PARK, Illinois -- After Demi Lovato played a raucous set of her original songs, some old-school "Camp Rock" numbers and a few tunes from the September 3 Disney Channel movie "Camp Rock 2," Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas hit the stage for the inaugural stop of their new tour at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre on a steamy Saturday night.

The Jonas Brothers got their half of the party started with "Feeling Alive," "Hold On" and "Year 3000," and girls were immediately screaming, singing and dancing on their seats.

"How are you guys doing tonight? You excited for 'Camp Rock 2'?" Joe asked the crowd before dancers hit the stage for an uptempo, country-tinged new tune from the soundtrack.

The guys played a number of songs off the soundtrack, and when Kevin asked for fans' opinions of the new songs, he received a resounding cheer. The crowd went nuts when Demi came onstage to sing "This Is Me" along with the boys.

Joe and Demi also played their new duet, "Wouldn't Change a Thing."

"You guys are awesome," Demi told everyone before saying good night.

The next part of the night belonged to "L.A. Baby," from their "JONAS L.A." TV show. That led into a cover of the Beatles' "Drive My Car."

After "Paranoid," Joe and Kevin gave their little bro, Nick, the stage for his solo "Who I Am." "Thank you so much for loving me for who I am," he told everyone.

Nick was rejoined by his brothers and took to the piano for "Fly With Me." Then, girls went crazy for the ballad "When You Look Me in the Eyes."

Telling the fans they were going to "take them back in time," the Jonases played "Please Be Mine" as photos of the guys from over the years showed on a screen behind them.

Then the stage was transformed into a swanky jazz club, complete with dancers in '20s garb, for "Lovebug."

For the encore, brought out their hits "S.O.S." and then "Burnin' Up." And on this sweltering night, it took little to make the crowd burn up themselves, but Nick stripping down to a tank top made the girls scream even more as the show drew to a close.

'Jersey Shore' Newbie Deena Fits In With Castmates, Snooki Says

'Not [just] anybody can survive in this house,' Snooks says of her pal.

Deena Nicole Cortese is looking to make a splash as the newest addition to the "Jersey Shore" house.

The New Jersey native, who originally auditioned for season one, has been pals with Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, for two years. When the chance to party on the boardwalk with her rowdy bestie presented itself, Cortese said she jumped at the opportunity.

"When [Snooki] invited me down I was just like, 'I'm down the shore anyway. This is what I do for a good time always,' " Cortese reasoned, adding that she has tons of experience living it up in Seaside Heights. "I lose jobs because I'm down the shore so much," she said. "So, I was like, 'You know what. I'm packing my bags, let's go.' "

She may be ready to party like her friend but unlike Snooki, Cortese isn't combing beachside bashes for a relationship.

"I snook for love and she snooks for a good time," Snooki said. Cortese concurred, adding that she's not looking for a gorilla to call her own anytime soon. "We're two peas in a pod but a little bit different," she said. Cortese plans to help her girl in her quest for seaside romance but insisted viewers won't catch the two scrapping over the same juicehead. "We won't step on each other's toes," Cortese said.

The 23-year-old is stepping into a house packed with colorful personalities, including Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, Jenni "JWoww" Farley and Paul "DJ Pauly D" Del Vecchio. Cortese said her chill nature sets her apart from the crew.

"I'm different because I'm just a personable person. I don't take things to heart. People can make fun of me 'til the day I die and I will just take it in and be like, 'Yeah, you know what? Whatever,' " Cortese laughed. "I just don't care what people think and I think that's what everybody in the house loves about me. They can bust on me all the time and the next day I'll just be like, 'All right, get real.' "

Snooki said that Cortese fits right in with the "Shore" collective and that her transition into the cast has been drama-free.

"Not [just] anybody can survive in this house and the fact that the first 24 hours that I brought her in ... everything was cool, I was like, 'All right, this is gonna be a good summer,' " Snooki said.

Jennifer Aniston May Join 'Arrested Development' Movie, Jason Bateman Says

The actor says he plans to suggest a role for Aniston in the much-anticipated project.

If it were up to Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston would appear in the much-anticipated big-screen adaptation of a popular television show. But, the actor isn't thinking of sending the "Friends" actress back to Central Perk. Bateman said he plans to rope Aniston into the "Arrested Development" flick.

"Yeah, actually, there's a real good part for her in the 'Arrested Development' movie," Bateman told MTV News on Saturday (August 7). Aniston and Bateman have been spending a lot of time together as co-stars in both "The Switch," a rom-com about a sperm donor mix-up, and the upcoming flick, "Horrible Bosses." Even though Bateman thinks Aniston would fit right in among the delightfully absurd "Development" crew, he said the A-lister will have to prove herself to get the part.

"There's no offers on this one. She's gonna have to sing for her supper," Bateman said. "I don't know, we'll see if she's available. She's busy. She's pretty famous; I don't know if you've heard of her. She's pretty backed up. Hopefully the guy who's in charge will like her for that part because I'm going to suggest her."

Bateman didn't give up any other details about the role, but all of this casting talk means the "Arrested Development" movie is definitely a go, right? Even though he's scheming to get Aniston onboard, Bateman said several things still need to fall into place before production can get under way.

"The truth is that there's really no significant update beyond ... what [creator] Mitch Hurwitz said a couple weeks ago, which was he's got half the script written. He's gotta finish the second half and then the studio's gotta love it and the cast's gotta love it and we all have to ... have time to do it," Bateman explained. However, after years of speculation and doubts that "Development" will ever get off the ground, Bateman assured fans that the flick will hit theaters: "It's happening," he said.

He's a chart-topping entertainer by trade, but Usher also looks out for the kids.

The singer celebrated his New Look Foundation's first World Leadership Awards on Friday night (August 6) in Atlanta, alongside some high-profile pals. ATL star Ciara and Usher protégé Justin Bieber treated guests to a performance. Former President Clinton, also stopped by and So So Def boss Jermaine Dupri showed up with his daughter, who has a serious case of Bieber Fever. "Justin Bieber's here — she ain't gonna miss that," the mogul riffed.

With his celebrity pals showing their support, Usher said he was excited to witness the success of the event. "As a philanthropist I'm very happy to see this incredible event come to fruition. It was an idea that was born in New York City with President Clinton," Usher told MTV News. "Being a part of the Clinton Global Initiative every year has given me the opportunity to do something with the youth that I felt like would talk to the rest of the world."

The singer added that he enjoyed empowering young people and helping them create change around the globe. "Us donating $150,000 dollars from the foundation with the help of the youth to a mobile clinic that will go to Haiti, is a huge step towards youth addressing world issues. I really am just happy that I'm able to not only recognize the kids but to see the New Look Foundation do something that is on a world scale."

Usher, who is gearing up to drop Versus, the re-release of his album Raymond v. Raymond, also said he has some music videos and some possible acting gigs in the works. Despite everything he's got bubbling on the entertainment front, the singer insisted, "music is what I do as my day job, philanthropy is my passion," and broke down what helping others means to him.

"As a philanthropist, I'm happy to do what I do," Usher said. "The idea of it comes from who I am as a businessman. That model is something that I share with the kids. That ... you can do anything you want to do, as long as you have the belief and come up with an idea [and] a goal [and] set it at a very young age. I remember being 18 years old saying that I wanted to do all of what is a reality now."

Usher's star pals were inspired by the evening as well. Ciara tweeted,"Tonight was sooo much fun performing. Both Usher and Justin Bieber rocked the show! today was all about positive energy and love! #perfectday."

Justin Bieber typed, "Proud of my big bro @usherraymondiv for putting 2gether the world leadership awards 2night. He is inspiring the youth. Great mentor and guy!"

'Avatar' Re-Release To Highlight Tsu'tey Death

James Cameron says nine minutes of deleted scenes will be added when the flick returns to theaters on August 27.

Fans will learn more about Na'vi life when James Cameron's blockbuster epic, "Avatar," returns to the big screen on August 27.

Cameron told MTV News that moviegoers will check out nine minutes of unseen footage featuring life on Pandora. Although news of the re-release originally touted roughly eight minutes of deleted scenes, the director said he threw in an additional 60 seconds. The footage also includes an expanded version of the demise of Na'vi hunter Tsu'tey, who was killed during the climactic clash between the Pandora natives and the human army.

"There's a pretty powerful emotional scene at the end which is Tsu'tey's death ... which happens off-camera in the original release. [In the original film] he kind of falls off the back of the shuttle and that's the last that you see of him but here we follow through. We have this emotional scene with Jake [Sully] and Neytiri and some other Na'vi that gather around him in the forest," Cameron said. The director added that the decision to cut down on Tsu'tey's passing was initially met with resistance from his team.

"It's a funny thing because everybody that was working on the film, when I said I'm taking out Tsu'tey's death, they said, 'What? You can't do that!' They had all fallen in love with it [because] it's a pretty powerful moment," he said. "It's such an amazing accomplishment on [visual effects supervisor Timothy] Webber's part because the emotionality in the CG is really quite stunning."

Cameron said the additional "Avatar" scenes involve four major moments, each around a couple minutes long, that turn up in the movie after the human soldiers fly a chopper into the lush Pandora rainforest for the first time. The revamped flick will also introduce fans to a new element of the alien environment: a herd-like creature called a Sturmbeest.

"There's a big scene we called the Sturmbeest hunt," Cameron said. "The Sturmbeest is an animal that basically will be new to audiences because all of the Sturmbeest stuff got cut out. Once I took out the hunt, I took out the scene where I establish it [and] I took out the moment where it appears in the final battle. All that stuff's now been reinstated so there's gonna be a lot of Sturmbeest in your diet."

Cameron lamented that many scenes were originally nixed to either keep the up pace of the flick or to avoid derailing the budget of the technologically innovative enterprise. However, the director said scenes that were added to the re-release are big on nonstop action.

"We've got a scene where the Na'vi attack the bulldozers after the scene where they've mowed down the willow glade," Cameron said. "It's kind of [an] action scene plus the aftermath with the human troopers finding the bodies of their friends." He added that the scene provides added context for the subsequent conflict between the Na'vi and the humans.

"It's sort of like the stepping stone of the escalation to war. We sort of jump over all of that in the [original] film. [Human leaders Colonel Miles Quaritch] and [Parker] Selfridge just say, 'OK, alright, let's go take 'em out.' But this sort of shows that there are steps in the process."
