Through the years, Lil Wayne developed as an artist. The onetime neophyte of Cash Money records has grown from a slick-talking corn-rowed kid to the multi-platinum face of the label. Now, 12 years after releasing his 1999 solo debut, Wayne heads his own Young Money label, and as he explained to Sway after taping his "MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged," he's serious about the careful artistic development of all of his signees.

"I'm not gonna shove him in your face right now and make him a one-hit wonder," Wayne said of his "6 Foot, 7 Foot" collaborator Cory GunzCory Gunz. "He's nowhere near ready. He's gonna do this the way artists should do it, the way Drake did it.

"I'm not gonna make a one-hit wonder," Wayne repeated emphatically. "That's not what I do."

Lil Twist, who is currently finding increasing success with his latest single, "Love Affair," will not be a flash in the pan either, according to Weezy. "Twist is ready. Twist is a well-developed artist, and it's about to be Twist's turn."

The 18-year-old Dallas rapper joined the Young Money fold as a minor, but rather than have him go for the usually successful, cutesy route, Wayne chose to wait. "That's why I didn't shove Twist in nobody's face. I could've been like, 'This is our young artist'; the young, cute little artist of the label with all the adults," he said. "I could've did that, but no, we're gonna do this right. I didn't want to put him out and have him as a kid star, and sometimes you don't know what to do after that. So now he's 18, he's a teenager, and I don't even have to look at the kid-star thing."

Young Money plans to release Twist's debut album Don't Get It Twisted later this year.

Wayne expresses a similar amount of confidence in his alternative R&B female artist Shanell.

"Shanell is past ready. Actually she came into the game ready," Wayne said beaming with pride. "That was no developing; that's a superstar, that's a very talented woman. It's just that you have to properly handle her situation the right way, 'cause you don't want nobody to miss the point, and the point is, that is a very talented woman, and that's what I want everybody to see."

Don't miss "MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged," premiering Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com.

Shortly after taping an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" on Thursday, Selena Gomez was taken to the hospital, MTV News has confirmed.

"Last night after Selena's appearance on 'The Tonight Show,' she wasn't feeling well and was taken to the hospital," Gomez's rep said in a statement to MTV News. "She is currently undergoing routine tests."

The news was first reported by TMZ, which said the singer/actress had been suffering from nausea and a headache before going to a Los Angeles-area hospital. Further information about her illness is unknown.

Wish Selena well on our Facebook page.

During her interview, which aired Thursday night, Gomez, wearing a little maroon dress, opened up about growing up with a single mom. "She was a chameleon, my mom, because she was a single mom," she said. "She basically raised me and had to work a lot of jobs. She did a lot of theater, though; she never did television. I loved watching my mom."

Does her mom approve of beau Justin Bieber? "Yes [she met Justin]. He passed the test," she said, giggling. Other hot topics included appearing on the covers of magazines, getting her driver's license, getting into a fender bender and her love of fellow guest Jim Carrey's movies.

Gomez was on the show to promote her new flick "Monte Carlo." She's also set to release an album this year. People reports that the singer's appearance in Santa Monica on Friday has been canceled.

'Super 8' Stars Super Tight-Lipped About 'Secret' Plot

We did manage to eke this tidbit out of Elle Fanning: 'People start going missing, dogs are running away.'
By Kara Warner

For fans who've been following the buzz surrounding J.J. Abrams' mystery-thriller "Super 8," know that there is, in fact, a big mystery at the center of the film. What that is, the filmmakers will not say, of course. (And those of us who have seen the film cannot and should not say.) In talking to the cast and filmmakers at the L.A. premiere, we had some fun soliciting the best theories they've heard about the secret — without giving anything away.

All jokes aside, though, we wondered what exactly the scene-stealing youngsters could say about the plot of J.J. Abrams-directed film? Not too much, it turns out. MTV News asked the young stars to give us their best non-spoilery "Super 8" summary of what the film is all about.

"I think that it's so hard to tell, it's hard to say," Elle Fanning said. "J.J.'s had us [keeping] the secret. The train crash happens, everything starts going wrong in the town, basically," she added. "People start going missing, dogs are running away."

"We're saying that whatever it is, it's scary," Ryan Lee said succinctly.

"A bunch of things disappear in the town," Gabriel Basso added.

"House appliances go missing, dogs go missing," Lee continued. "People go missing. Basically, throughout the whole thing, we're just trying to find out what's happening."

"It's a major event that changes this town's life forever," Riley Griffiths said.

Kreayshawn Says Record Label Told Her: 'Do You'

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 11:47 PM PDT

'They were like, 'We want to do exactly what you've been doing,' ' the 'Gucci Gucci' femcee tells MTV News of why she inked with Columbia.
By Steven Roberts

A month ago Kreayshawn was the girl "cooking" and partaking in other recreational activities with Lil B the Based God in a random online video (they're listening to Soulja Boy's "Dat Piff," naturally). And honestly, unless you were from the Bay Area, hung out around Fairfax in Los Angeles or had your finger on the pulse of underground hip-hop, you probably didn't know her name. That quickly changed about four weeks ago when she dropped the video for her song "Gucci Gucci."

The video featured the pint-size, Bay Area rapper performing alongside Odd Future's Left Brain, Jasper Dolphin and many of their friends, at OF's stomping grounds on L.A.'s Fairfax Avenue. At a house party, she's seen rapping about the swag dripping out her "ovaries." The video soon made her an instant sensation on several blogs and eventually earned the interest of several record labels.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Kreayshawn had signed with Columbia Records. MTV News caught up with one-third of the White Girl Mob on Thursday afternoon, and she said the deal offered her an incredible amount of artistic freedom, which she was already enjoying.

"Columbia was the best because they were like, 'We want to do exactly what you've been doing.' I've been directing music videos, so they're like, 'We want you to keep doing that.' I do a little graphic design, and they had me make my logo. The music that I'm making — 'Gucci Gucci' — [is] going to be the single that they push," Kreayshawn told us.

The femcee also said she's conscious that some have already pegged her as a viral, one-hit wonder, but promised she has a lot more to offer. Still, she admitted, it can be frustrating to have critics put her in a box. There's a lot of Kreayshawn material — beyond her 2010 mixtape Kittys x Choppas — the public hasn't heard yet.

On the flip side, the MC is enjoying the love from fans. The best part of the recent music industry whirlwind, Kreayshawn said, is how organically her early success has unfolded.

"We never made the ['Gucci Gucci'] video with the intention of anything. We knew it was a great song, we knew that the video [was] going to be dope. We didn't put it out like we knew this was secretly going to launch everything, because everything was organic."

What do you think of Kreayshawn? Sound off in our comments section!

Ryan Reynolds: 'Green Lantern' Is 'Better Than I Had Hoped'

After initially lukewarm reception to first trailer, Reynolds was relieved to see fans' reaction to footage at WonderCon.

Ryan Reynolds might not have been freaked out about the initially lukewarm reception that greeted the first "Green Lantern" trailer, but he was certainly frustrated. After that footage dropped in November, there was precious little new multimedia to offer the public and prove that Warner Bros. really did have a winning comic book adaptation on its hands. "I just want it out there faster than Warner Bros. can unfortunately produce it," Reynolds told us in late March at CinemaCon. "If anyone's rushing it, it's me."

It was a few days later at WonderCon, though, that Reynolds felt the tide begin to turn — not only for fans, but for himself. "The first time I saw it was just breathtaking. I think the first time it hit me that we really did it right was in WonderCon," he told us recently. "I'd been shooting in Africa at the time, so I flew back just to be there, and I was exhausted, and they put up this 10 or 11 minutes of footage, and you could feel it going like a wave through the audience."

Reynolds walked away from the convention with a startling realization: "It's better than I had hoped."

The 34-year-old actor may not have known exactly what to expect. Though he has been familiar with the comic book his whole life, he told us back in 2009 that he only "fell in love with the character" when he met with director Martin Campbell and heard the pitch for the film. Since then, he's slogged through a lengthy shoot and a marathon post-production schedule during which so much of the film's CGI-heavy world was created. To begin, all he wanted to do was learn exactly what it takes to make a summer blockbuster. Reynolds ended up walking away with the certainty that "Green Lantern" is a kick-ass movie.

"For me, going into it, my expectations were really just to learn — not just about the character but about filmmaking like that. I was just so blown away to see what they accomplished juxtaposed with what they shot," he said. "We were shooting in a blue-screen stage with nothing to interact with at all. And these incredible artists that they hired — Grant Major from 'Lord of the Rings' and Ngila Dickson as well, from the same franchise — they just created an entire living, breathing universe around us. That was amazing to see."

Jack White and his wife, model/singer Karen Elson, have announced their divorce, but it doesn't seem like there are hard feelings between them. They plan to commemorate the ending of their six-year marriage with a divorce party this weekend, according to People.com.

"Karen Elson and Jack White announce today that they are getting divorced," a statement about their divorce reads. "We remain dear and trusted friends and co-parents to our wonderful children Scarlett and Henry Lee. We feel so fortunate for the time we have shared and the time we will continue to spend both separately and together watching our children grow.

"In honor of that time shared, we are throwing a divorce party," the statement continues. "An evening together in Nashville to reaffirm our friendship and celebrate the past and future with close friends and family."

This is the second split for White this year. Earlier this year, Jack and Meg White officially dissolved the White Stripes. The musical partners had also been previously married to one another. White married Elson (who appeared in the Stripes' "Blue Orchid" video) in 2005 in Brazil, quickly expanding their family with a son and daughter. They reside in Nashville where the party is expected to take place on Friday night (June 10).

An invitation says that the unusual party will have "dancing, photos, memories and drinks with alcohol in them. ... Please help us celebrate together this anniversary of the making and breaking of the sacred union of marriage with our best friends and animals." So, who made the guest list? The invite adds, "This is only for close personal friends and family. So please no plus ones or dead beats."

The weather just didn't want to cooperate with the Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift and the other artists slated to perform in New York's Central Park on Thursday night at a concert to benefit the Robin Hood Foundation anti-poverty organization. After a number of delays, and before anyone could take the stage, the Concert 4 NYC had been canceled.

The show, which had been slated to take place on Central Park's Great Lawn and was expected to draw an audience of approximately 60,000 fans, initially was just delayed but concert promoters eventually decided to pull the plug on the event as the weather worsened and thunder and rain rolled in, Billboard.com reports. Among the other acts that had been scheduled to perform were Debbie Harry, LL Cool J and Natasha Bedingfield.

A rep for the concert has confirmed to MTV News that no new date has been scheduled. In a statement, the Robin Hood Foundation said, "The heat wasn't going to stop them, the rain wasn't going to stop them, but the lightning — it stopped them. It came down to safety for everyone. Organizers are hoping to reschedule, so ticket buyers should hold onto their tickets. Robinhood.org will have information in the next week or so."

The artists themselves also have apologized to fans for the cancelation. Swift tweeted, "I was like 'I get to sing with Fergie in NYC?!' and then there was rain and lightning and they're like 'it's cancelled' and I was like [sad emoticon]."

The Black Eyed Peas, who reportedly performed an intimate show backstage for fans, also took to Twitter to posted about the nixed concert. "I'm so sad the show got postponed," will.i.am wrote.

"Fergie is really sorry it's not happening we feel horrible," Taboo added on his Twitter page. "We are devastated and Fergie told me to tweet this she loves u all ... I hope that the concert will be rescheduled ASAP, our pea-ple deserve it, my pea-ple from chase and robinhood deserve this NYC we love u."

'Super 8': The Reviews Are In!

J.J. Abrams' film is an antidote to the 'emotional-vitamin deficiency' brought on by 'low-cal' superhero sequels, one critic writes.
By Eric Ditzian

From the Spielbergian nostalgia factor to the first-rate performances of a group of largely unknown young actors to the ultra-satisfying reveal of the monster, we've got plenty of reasons you should check out "Super 8" this weekend.

But we're not alone in our full-throated support of director J.J. Abrams' ode to '70s-era adolescence and alien invasion flicks. Based on a wholly original idea (a true rarity in an era of iconic superheroes, wizards and alien bots) and with no A-list talent in front of the camera, "Super 8" has nonetheless been nabbing overwhelmingly positive reviews and is expected to earn around $35 million over the weekend.

While some critics have suggested the film's ultimate mystery remains disappointing when finally revealed, far more have been raving about the flick's throwback vibe, efficient storytelling, and satisfying emotional and cinematic similarity to movies like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Read on for a deep dive into "Super 8" reviews.

The Story
" "Super 8" centers on Joe (Joel Courtney), a middle-schooler who has lost his mom and is spending his summer helping his chum Charles (Riley Griffiths) make a zombie movie. Shooting surreptitiously one night at a train station, the kids witness a horrific accident that opens a mystery involving a science teacher, an Air Force investigation, Joe's policeman dad (Kyle Chandler) and ... something out there in the night. There are harum-scarum jokes aplenty, lots of Spielbergian camera work, a cute girl to woo (Elle Fanning), and some broken psyches in need of repair. Is it as powerful as "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" or "E. T."? Not quite, no. But it's spirited and funny and deeply entertaining, a summer movie for kids who think like adults and adults who feel like kids." — Shawn Levy, The Oregonian

The Performances
"The pacing is superb, quick and agile without being frenzied, and the special effects are jaw-dropping. Abrams gets excellent performances from his young cast, not only from his leads — Elle Fanning, as the pretty girl from the wrong side of the tracks, and Joel Courtney, as a sensitive boy who has lost his mother — but from the supporting players. For example, Riley Griffiths tears ferociously into the role of the boy director, as a kind of eighth-grade Orson Welles. There are also two wounded fathers, well played: Kyle Chandler plays the town's deputy for all he's worth, and Ron Eldard, looking like a slimmed-down Gerard Depardieu, plays Fanning's confused father." — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

The Comparisons
"There's a thin line, though, between honoring what came before you and replicating it, and 'Super 8' occasionally wobbles over that line into predictability. Nor is Abrams quite sure what to make of his monster. Is it friend or foe? Can a movie split the difference and still hold on to our sympathies? Toward the end, you feel the filmmaking cutting corners, rushing past story points and shortchanging characters to get to the finale, which itself lacks the pop immensity of a movie like 'Close Encounters' even as it imitates it. 'Super 8' is a curious thing indeed: A good movie that makes you want to go home and re-watch a great one." — Ty Burr, Boston Globe

The Mystery
"Just what and who the monster is, forms the central question of 'Super 8.' But despite Abrams' best efforts to ratchet up the tension, the mystery never takes compelling hold, a weakness that becomes especially clear in the movie's anti-climax of an ending. At that point, the already thin story gets wrapped up so neatly that viewers will scarcely have time to process its plot holes. (What were those little white boxes for, anyway?)" — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Final Word
"How have we survived for so long on such a meager, high-cal, low-nutrition diet of processed summertime superhero sequels? 'Super 8' is an antidote to that emotional-vitamin deficiency. It's also a great specimen of original storytelling grounded in a sophisticated respect for storytellers who have come before. Writer/director J.J. Abrams has described his movie as a love letter to the kind of Super 8 monsters-and-chases stuff he made as a boy, which were influenced by the 'Raiders'/ 'Close Encounters' sagas of Steven Spielberg, who himself made 8mm monsters-and-chases stuff as a boy. (Spielberg is a 'Super 8 producer.') The loop works beautifully." — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

Justin Bieber: I'm A Country Boy

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 07:45 AM PDT

The newly minted CMT Music Award winner says he shares his mother's love of the country sound.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: The Insider

Before he took home the trophy for Collaborative Video of the Year at the CMT Music Awards on Wednesday night, Justin Bieber professed his love for all things country on the red carpet.

"I'm really glad to be here," he told CMT, with the guys of Rascal Flatts by his side. "It's great."

It wasn't just an exciting night for him, but also for Mama Bieber, who happens to be a big country music aficionado. "It's great; it's so many people my mother admires, 'cause she loves country music, and I do too," he continued. "So it's really great to be here with Rascal Flatts."

It was on the set for his winning video, "That Should Be Me," that Bieber first cut his hair. In the end, the sacrifice of his trademark locks seemed worth it.

"Some of the fans liked it; some of the fans didn't. They were just upset he cut it," Bieber joked, nodding to Rascal Flatts' Gary LeVox.

The video for "That Should Be Me," a Never Say Never - The Remixes track (which was a reworked version of the song that first appeared on My World 2.0) is a lo-fi, behind-the-scenes, "making of the video" performance clip. But it was good enough to beat out the likes of country music superstars like Jason Aldean with Kelly Clarkson; Kid Rock featuring Sheryl Crow; Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert and Sheryl Crow, as well as Aaron Lewis featuring George Jones and Charlie Daniels.

"First of all, I just want to say how honored I am to be here ... with Rascal Flatts," Bieber said while accepting his first country award. "How amazing are Rascal Flatts, everybody? I want to thank my mom. I want to thank my family. And I want to thank Rascal Flatts for even jumping on the song with me."

Nicole Scherzinger Avoids 'X Factor' Rumors

'I'm just so happy to be a part of this show, no matter what,' the singer says about her new role on the program.

Just days ago, official word came through that former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger would be sitting at the "X Factor" judges' panel instead of U.K. pop star Cheryl Cole. The announcement came after much speculation and debate about who the fourth judge on the Fox talent show would be alongside Simon Cowell, fellow former "American Idol" panelist Paula Abdul and music-biz executive L.A. Reid.

Scherzinger spoke to The Hollywood Reporter during her first tapings as an "X Factor" judge in New Jersey this week, commenting that she "tries not to read" all the stories surrounding her and Cole.

As for whether she found it difficult transitioning from being one of the program's co-hosts to a panelist, Scherzinger said, "Not at all. I'm just so happy to be a part of this show, no matter what ... I was nervous. I'm much more comfortable onstage." As for the woman she replaced as a judge, she called Cole "a lovely, beautiful girl."

Scherzinger went on to say that "L.A. is my idol," and seemed enthusiastic about adapting the hit British show for American audiences. "[It's] frickin' wicked awesome," she gushed. "It's like a spaceship coming to America to give the people what they want."

Abdul also had kind words for Cole. "As I've said, she's über-talented. She's lovely. We're friends. We have a great time together," she noted.

In addition, Adbul had nice things to say about her former on-screen rival, Cowell. "[We're] having the greatest time," she admitted. "This sounds out of character ... We're laughing a lot. He's actually saying, 'I have to agree' with me. I have the horrible feeling the other shoe will drop. He's being charming in a weird way."
