'30 Minutes Or Less' Stars Call Car Chases 'Easy' At MTV's Sneak Peek Week

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — The bar was set super high Friday night (June 3) during MTV's final Sneak Peek Week screening. Since Monday, we'd been showing early looks at some of the summer's hottest films and having crazy chats with the various casts. Take, for instance, the moment "Horrible Bosses" star Jason Sudeikis launched into a filthily hilarious explanation of the "The Twilight Saga": the vampire story as told by a "Star Wars"-obsessed, mind-in-the-gutter comedian.

The pressure was on Friday, and the guys from "30 Minutes or Less" -- stars Aziz Ansari and Nick Swardson and director Reuben Fleischer -- were more than up to the task. Their upcoming action/comedy, it should be said, served as quite the warm-up act for the crowd at the Pacific Design Center. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg as a beer-guzzling, joint-sucking pizza delivery boy who gets sucked into a harebrained scheme, hatched by slackers played by Danny McBride and Swardson, to rob a bank. Eisenberg's character, with a bomb strapped to his chest and only hours to complete the heist, enlists his pal, a teacher played by Ansari, to help out in the crime. Things do not go very well, to hilarious results.

The part represents Ansari's biggest onscreen role to date. "This is the first time I've been around the whole movie," he said. "Usually I'll be around for a few minutes, and then they're like, 'Just say something about your penis and get out of here!' "

It was all new for Swardson, too, who cracked that perhaps he has the makings of an action-hero career. "Maybe I'll be the Predator!"

Is launching such a career as easy as that? According to Ansari, at least, the car-chase portion of action flicks is a breeze. "Car chases are pretty easy," he said. "You're like, 'Oooohhhhhhh!' OK, let's get another one. 'Whooooooooa! Look out!' "

On second thought, though, maybe these guys aren't cut out to inherent the cinematic thrones of Stallone and Schwarzenegger. It just takes so damn long to shoot one of these flicks, Ansari said. After production wrapped on "30 Minutes," he added, "I watched 'Fast Five,' and I was like, 'How did this movie not take 20 years to make? Did Vin Diesel start making this when he was 5?' "

Though Eisenberg and McBride couldn't make the Q&A, the duo did tape a message for the crowd. "I sent my family a similar taped message at Thanksgiving," McBride confessed.

Said Eisenberg, "We hope you liked the movie. But if you didn't, by this point it's on you, because you're still there."

As the laughter rolled in, no one seemed to be complaining about spending their Friday night at Sneak Peek Week.

In the last couple days leading up to the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, we've been all about bringing fans as close to the awards-show action as possible.

The intrepid MTV News team working from the show's site in Universal City, California, has been privy to countless exclusive sneak peeks, like advance screenings of "Horrible Bosses," "The Help" and more during our Sneak Peek Week; the promise of an awesome "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" exclusive during the big show; and the very first look at "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1."

If that isn't enough to get you to tune in Sunday, MTV News' Jim Cantiello tracked down the show's supervising producer, Jane Mun, to get inside info about what viewers can expect to see during the first act of the show.

"In Act 1, we have Jason Sudeikis, our host, going in and out of our movies, but I can't tell you what [exactly] that is, because that's a surprise that we have to keep," Mun teased. "You'll notice right here a name [Taylor Lautner] on this board," she added, gesturing to a large poster board covered in different-colored pieces of paper, each with names of people and events that will occur during the telecast.

"I can't spill the deets," Mun said when pressed about what the "Twilight" superstar will be doing onstage. Cantiello suggested that whatever Lautner does, it should be shirtless -- which Mun didn't confirm or deny.

"Then we have Jason come out and greet the room and our viewers to a really awesome monologue, " Mun continued, adding that she's alerted her censor team that they might have some extra work during Sudeikis' opener.

"I've already talked to the censors, and they are in for a treat," she said with a smile.

The first award of the night will be Best Male Performance, which pits supernatural studs Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner ("The Twilight Saga: Eclipse") against each other and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1" star Daniel Radcliffe, Jesse Eisenberg ("The Social Network") and Zac Efron ("Charlie St. Cloud"). Who will come out on top?

"Then, we just announced [Thursday] morning, is going to be the exclusive sneak peek of 'Super 8,' " with director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg and stars Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney presenting. "And that is our Act 1!"

'Teen Wolf' Stars Promise 'Blood, Shirtless Men And Mystery'

For fans of all things supernatural, Sunday's MTV Movie Awards were made for you. Thanks to exclusives from "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" and the big premiere of the new MTV series "Teen Wolf" right after the show, it's all about sexy creatures of the night.

So why should you check out the latest incarnation of "Teen Wolf"? Well, the stars gave MTV News some really convincing reasons. For one, Tyler Hoechlin said, "There's a lot of mystery."

Crystal Reed added, "Two, there's a lot of shirtless men," and Tyler Posey added, "There's a lot of blood, and that's all you need in life: blood, shirtless men and mystery. Get ready for the gnarliest show you can feast your eyes on. It's just going to be a really cool show."

With a werewolf and a pretty girl at the center of the romance of the show, it's easy to make comparisons to "Twilight." Posey happens to play a teen wolf on "Teen Wolf" just like Taylor Lautner, but he explained the big difference between his show's wolves and, you know, those other ones.

"We're not the only werewolves here at the MTV Movie Awards. The kids from 'Twilight' also have a couple werewolves of their own, but do they match up to us?" he asked. "My argument [is], we will win in a fight because we have opposable thumbs and we can jab their eyes out, and what's cooler than jabbing another werewolves' eyes out?"

Hosted by Jason Sudeikis, the 20th annual MTV Movie Awards air live this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT, from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

'30 Minutes Or Less' Stars Explain Taylor Lautner's Rumored Cameo

Aziz Ansari and Nick Swardson keep the rumor going at MTV's Sneak Peek Week.
By Eric Ditzian

Ruben Fleischer, in his directorial debut, established himself as a savvy proponent of the celebrity cameo. Midway through 2009's "Zombieland," Bill Murray popped up in perfect out-of-nowhere fashion to steal some scenes and leave everyone wondering, "How'd they convince a comedy legend to dress up in zombie makeup and send up his own larger-than-life persona?"

And when Fleischer embarked upon his second feature, the action/comedy "30 Minutes or Less," rumors began to swirl that the director had done it again, albeit with a far younger Hollywood player. Last summer, the Web began to buzz with word that Taylor Lautner had dropped into the Grand Rapids, Michigan set to shoot a cameo. Could it be true? When MTV News visited the set a few weeks later, Fleischer's lips were sealed when we asked about the Twi-cameo.

On Friday night (June 3), at MTV's Sneak Peak Week presentation of "30 Minutes," it turned out that Lautner, in fact, was not in the film. So, during the post-screening Q&A, we put the question to Fleischer and stars Aziz Ansari and Nick Swardson.

"He's in it!" Ansari said.

Wait, what? Did we somehow miss the most famous abs in Hollywood?

"He plays a bum," Swardson chimed in.

Or not. The whole thing, it turns out, was just a rumor. "I read that somewhere. I was like, 'I didn't know about that,' " Ansari said, before reconsidering. Perhaps the suggestion that the "Twilight" star shows his face onscreen can goose the film's box-office prospects.

"Let's start that rumor," Ansari cracked. "People like him, right? Just say he's in the movie. 'That Lautner cameo is dope, man! You gotta see that movie with Taylor Lautner!' I'm just going to say that at the MTV Movie Awards. 'Taylor Lautner's in "30 Minutes or Less" Good night!' "

It all ends on July 15, but at this Sunday's MTV Movie Awards, Emma Watson will present a sneak peek at "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2".

With only three days left until the big show, we've been rolling out the many reasons you'll want to tune in to this year's Jason Sudeikis-hosted event, and a preview clip of the hotly anticipated final installment in the "Potter" series is just the latest. At last year's Movie Awards, MTV debuted an exclusive look at part 1 of "Deathly Hallows," which teased the movie's dark tone; "Part 2" looks to be even darker — and more action-packed. Also on Sunday, "Twilight" stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be presenting an exclusive scene from "Breaking Dawn" at the show, which kicks off at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. (And as if that weren't enough, a "Breaking Dawn" surprise is coming your way during the 7:30 p.m. ET/PT pre-show.)

"Deathly Hallows, Part 1" is up for six awards at Sunday's ceremony, including Best Kiss, Best Fight, Best Villain, Best Female Performance, Best Male Performance and Best Movie.

When MTV News caught up with 2011 Best Villain nominee Tom Felton earlier this month, the "Harry Potter" star said he was "humbled" by the nod, a category in which he was also nominated and won last year. "All I can send is my endless appreciation to everyone who is online and campaigning," he said. "I really appreciate it. It's an endless, sweet gesture, after 10 years, that Draco gets a lot of love. It's ironic, in a way, but I love it and appreciate it very much."

Wondering how much longer you'll have to wait to see what kinds of antics the cast of "Jersey Shore" have managed to get into in Florence, Italy? Well, wonder no more! The fourth season of the show is set to premiere Thursday, August 4, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

The crew shuffled off to Florence to visit their mother country and bring GTL and fist-pumping to the home of fashion, art and delicious food, and fans are now months away from learning just what went down when they left America. Can't wait that long? Well, on Thursday, July 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, a one-hour special will air that gives fans an inside look at the rise of the show and its beloved cast of characters. The special will include buzzed-about moments, footage and interviews with the cast.

Two days prior to the special, the "Jersey Shore Uncensored: Season Three" DVD will hit stores, on Tuesday, July 26. In addition to the season's 13 episodes, it will also feature behind-the-scenes moments and the always-entertaining reunion special.

Before they headed abroad, MTV News spoke to some of the stars, who shared their excitement for shooting the show in Italy. "I honestly can't wait to get there and see the place," Deena told MTV News in March. "For some reason, I really want to go on a gondola ride. Or I would like, if we're in Rome, I would like to see the love fountain, so I'm thinking I'll steal a coin. ... Maybe I'll fall in love."

Meanwhile, Vinny shared that the group was approaching the season the same as they would any other. "Preparing for Italy is pretty much preparing for any of the other seasons: trying to get in shape, trying to spend some time with my family, chill out, the quiet before the storm," he said. "I'm excited to be thrown right into the water with whatever language skills I have."

A big part of the MTV Movie Awards is the stage, and every year the creative folks responsible for coming up with the look of the show manage to think up some eye-popping way to keep viewers entertained.

Although the stage design has often been sleek and modern, for the 2011 Movie Awards, the team went in a different direction, filling the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, with fantastical props like caves, butterflies, LED lights and glittery, hanging jewels.

Executive Producer Mark Burnett spoke to MTV News about the inspiration for the design, and he described it as "a little bit of a 'Lord of the Rings,' our nod to that part of the movie industry. ... And our production designer Roy, [this is] his nod to fantasy in the movies."

With "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1" leading the nominee pack, Burnett said the feel of this show also reflects those fantastical worlds that are ruled by wizards, werewolves and vampires. "I think there's been a lot of movies in the last few years that are very fantasy-driven," he said, adding that Tim Burton had been a major inspiration for the stage design.

And come Sunday, that stage will be filled with A-listers like Generation Award honoree Reese Witherspoon, Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone and, of course, host Jason Sudeikis.

If fantasy isn't your thing, Burnett offered an alternative way to interpret the swirling, eye-catching look of the show. He joked, "It could be 4 a.m., you've had too much to drink [and] it's the end of the party."

Emma Stone and Taylor Swift are best gal pals. Stone has opened up about Swift in the past, revealing that the superstar "has such a sick sense of humor," and when Stone sat down for a Q&A about "The Help" during MTV's Sneak Peek Week, she divulged a bit more about their relationship.

So is Stone digging Swift's latest album, Speak Now? "I am indeed. I was lucky enough to hear it pretty early on, so it's so exciting for it to be out and own the songs instead of just be singing them [in my head]," she dished, sharing that just because Swift is one of the biggest pop stars in the world doesn't mean she's at all critical of her friends who can't sing as well as her.

"Taylor's a pretty normal girl," Stone said. " ... She's not [like], 'I am one of the world's most popular singers.' "

Stone's kind words came shortly after an email was read to her from her superstar pal who wanted to know more about her love of baking. "I've been baking at least once a day," she shared, revealing some of the sweet treats she's been making the past few months.

While she's got some sweet skills when it comes to confections, when she attempts to bake for a large group, the results aren't as delicious. "I made 60 biscuits once for a party," she said. "They didn't turn out so great, though. I think in bulk I'm a little subpar."

The 2011 MTV Movie Awards are only days away, and that means all the finishing touches are being made inside the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. MTV News' Jim Cantiello was on hand as the seating cards were placed inside the theater, and he learned which of Hollywood's biggest stars would be rubbing elbows during Sunday's big show.

"It's the most wonderful time of the year, you guys: Seat cards are down at the Movie Awards!" Jim said from inside the Gibson. "This is where all the A-listers are going to be sitting, and look! MTV Movie Awards isn't making a decision between Team Edward and Team Jacob," Jim noted, pointing out that Kristen Stewart will be placed smack-dab in the middle of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, much like her character in "Twilight."

When we caught up with Movie Awards seating manager Stephan Lenart, he explained how he goes about choosing who sits where. "It's like a puzzle," he said, adding that he reads up on a ton of entertainment blogs to determine which celebs are in the spotlight before deciding where to seat them.

Jim has a special explanation for how one celeb ended up with her seat: "We have Nicki Minaj here with three empty seats. MTV gave her plenty of room for all of her personalities," he joked about the presenter.

Other seating assignments include R&B superstar Trey Songz sitting next to ... "Super 8" director J.J. Abrams? "Here we have frequent collaborators Trey Songz and J.J. Abrams, creator of 'Lost.' "

Other big attendees and nominees include Emma Stone, Generation Award winner Reese Witherspoon, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Selena Gomez, Cameron Diaz, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, Shia LaBeouf, Patrick Dempsey, Josh Duhamel and many more. Where everyone will be sitting come the big night could lend itself to some interesting, unexpected moments.

If this whole "Twilight" thing doesn't work out, Jackson Rathbone could have a great career translating movie dialogue into catchy little jingles for big awards shows.

What better way to introduce a new category at the MTV Movie Awards than with song? And who better to turn one of the categories into a hummable tune than the multitalented Rathbone?

When the 26-year-old actor isn't occupied with all the thrilling engagements and obligations involved with being part of the massive "Twilight" franchise, he can be found rocking with his band 100 Monkeys. The man widely known as Jasper Hale in "The Twilight Saga" is a multi-instrumentalist capable of shredding on guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, mandolins, trumpets and harmonicas.

During a break from shooting a new movie called "Live at the Foxes Den," in which he plays a guy who quits a major law firm to become a singer, Rathbone was kind enough to strap on an instrument and put all the 2011 MTV Movie Awards Best Line from a Movie nominees to song.

Watch as Rathbone sings (and strums along with) some of the most memorable dialogue of the past year from blockbusters and Oscar contenders, including lines from Jessie Eisenberg in "The Social Network"; Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield in "The Social Network"; Tom Hardy in "Inception"; Amanda Bynes and Emma Stone in "Easy A"; and little Alexys Nycole Sanchez in "Grown Ups."

Check out the video and then be sure to vote for your favorite line.

Movie Awards Tip To Celebs: Pass (And Drop) The Golden Popcorn!

'Let it slip. It's no problem!' laughs Suz-Anna Dela Rosa, in search of good post-show gossip.

If there's one request Suz-Anna Dela Rosa, the woman in charge of handling the Movies Awards' Golden Popcorn trophies, has for celebs as they prepare for Sunday's big show, it's please, please drop the Popcorn.

It all started back in 2009, when Kristen Stewart dropped the Golden Popcorn statue she'd just received for Best Female Performance in "Twilight." The starlet was awkward (and adorable) about the misstep, and the moment is now part of MTV Movie Awards history.

Fast-forward to 2010: no dropped awards. Apparently last year's celebs didn't want to repeat KStew's stumble, so they came prepared — with steady hands and good balance. And, of course, that was a good thing, except that it meant Dela Rosa didn't have too many juicy celeb anecdotes for us when we asked her to dish some dirt after the show. Stewart's slip in '09 had gotten us a cute story about how the "Breaking Dawn" star asked Movie Awards staff for her broken Popcorn only to find out they had already tossed it.

But last year? "Nothing, not a thing," Dela Rosa said. "Celebrities, please help us out. Give us a story."

She even suggested that stars give the audience a little fake-out, a tease. "Drop it. Let it slip. It's no problem!" she joked.

With Jim Carrey set to present at the Movie Awards and Jason Sudeikis as the show's host, she may get her wish.

Rihanna's 'Man Down' Video: Experts Weigh In On Controversy

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:24 AM PDT

'I don't think viewers are necessarily getting healthy messages from it,' one expert says.
By Gil Kaufman

Like any good piece of art, Rihanna's controversial "Man Down" video has elicited a wide variety of opinions, running the gamut from condemnation for its bloodshed to praise for its attempt to grapple with the complex issue of violence against women.

"It strikes me first and foremost that she is working out personal issues through her art," said Terry O'Neill, national president of the National Organization for Women, who lauded the singer's talent and stressed that she did not find the video exploitive at all.

A number of groups slammed the clip after its premiere, taking issue with the opening scene, in which a hidden Rihanna is shown shooting an unarmed man in the back of the head in the middle of a crowded train station. Viewers later learn that the act was in retaliation for a previous sexual assault.

" 'Man Down' is an inexcusable, shock-only, shoot-and-kill theme song," said Industry Ears co-founder Paul Porter, a former programming director at BET, where the video debuted earlier this week and remains in rotation.

But O'Neill said that like Rihanna's collaboration with Eminem on the "Love the Way You Lie" video — which also tackled issues of domestic abuse — "Man Down" is another example of Rihanna "trying to grapple with the multifaceted nature of violence against women as an artist. Obviously violence is not the way to solve anything and both videos depict violence. In one, it's a man who feels justified in committing violence against a woman and in the other a woman who feels instantly very remorseful in her killing." For O'Neill, "Man Down" does not cross the line into portraying violence in an effort to titillate.

"One of the main messages it leaves you with is violence breeds more violence and everyone can see that and also detect some problems with that," said Stephanie Nilva, Executive Director of Day One, New York's leading teen relationship abuse-focused organization. "I respect the fact that Rihanna is trying to draw attention to these issues, but I don't think viewers are necessarily getting healthy messages from it."

Another concern for Nilva, given the implied sexual abuse in the clip, is the underlying impression that young women who dress a certain way or go dancing in clubs are naive or should feel at risk. That too, she said, sends a muddled message about sexual assault. "What it doesn't do is open up a discussion about how men's violence is frequently about controlling women and not about violence they've experienced at that person's hands," she said.

After posting a defense of the clip, Rihanna got plenty of support from her fans on Twitter, where the comments included such sentiments as "it's really ironic how women r always exploited n videos ... we watch women be raped & murdered. Now a woman flips the coin & look!"

Another fan wrote, "You opened the eyes of all women living under a dark cloud that needed a voice. 'Man Down' is the voice. I love you." Others called it "inspiring" and praised Rihanna for tackling the issue of sexual abuse, writing, " 'Man Down' video portrays REAL situations that can happen to ANYONE! Do yoo thing ri!" Rihanna also pleaded with her fans to stop making threats against members of the PTC, writing, "We love it, they don't ... that is all, and the world keeps turning."

Given the message of empowerment some of Rihanna's fans appear to have taken from the video, Nilva noted that one of the messages Day One imparts to young people is that violence is never appropriate. "I wouldn't say that perpetrating violence against someone is a form of empowerment, just like you wouldn't say a man raping a woman is a form of empowerment," she said. "It's a complicated message to get young people to absorb that — what it means to be an empowered person — and it would be nice to see more images of strength that are not about exercising violence or power over other people."

As a survivor of relationship violence at the hands of her ex, Chris Brown, Nilva said the singer is clearly under the microscope when it comes to this topic. But given that people are likely to pay more attention to what she has to say about it because of her fame and the notoriety surrounding Brown's 2009 assault, Nilva said it would be preferable to see a more positive message from Rihanna on the topic.

O'Neill said she's confident that Rihanna's fans will understand the message of the clip because any woman who has experienced violence from a partner or acquaintance knows that among the emotions you feel in addition to anger and rage are humiliation and fear and a desire for revenge.

"Many women who have experienced violence, of course, have those feelings and this video seems to be a fictional portrayal of those feelings and is not intended to be instructional," O'Neill said, calling it a kind of catharsis for viewers. "The other aspect that is part of the message is the fact that if you act on your desire to kill this rapist, you will then throw yourself down the rabbit hole of remorse and criminal accountability and be sent to prison. There are repercussions and the video clearly says that."

At press time, MTV's Facebook poll asking whether the video goes too far had the "no" votes leading the "yes" votes by a margin of three-to-one.

Death Cab For Cutie's Guide To Seattle: Well-Worn Studios, Bathroom Libraries

In the final stop on our 'Seattle Sonics' tour, DCFC take us to the city's legendary Avast! Studio.

SEATTLE — The Avast! Recording Company, the final stop on our "Death Cab for Cutie: Seattle Sonics" tour, jokingly proclaims on their official site, "We pledge to have a website by 2010." Of course, they've got one, but the humor lies in the fact that the pledge is a very Seattle statement: slightly self-effacing, sure, but also steadfastly defiant. This is a town that, when it comes to music, likes to adhere to the old standard that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Which is why, in the many studios that dot the landscape here, you won't find a whole lot of high-end gadgetry. Instead, the rooms are packet with rickety pianos, dented Fenders and, in Avast!'s case, a massive Trident A-Range console, a legendary bit of gear (only 13 were ever assembled) that has attained near-mythic status in the recording industry. It's just part of the reason local bands have flocked to the studio over its 20-year history — everyone from Soundgarden to Fleet Foxes have recorded here — and it's most definitely why Chris Walla decided to take us here.

Because not only is Walla an unapologetic studio guy (he operates his own, called Hall of Justice, which was in the middle of a rather messy overhaul when we were in town), but he's worked here too: DCFC's Transatlanticism was mixed at Avast!, and he used the studio to put the finishing touches on their just-released Codes and Keys. And, above all else, he considers Avast! to be a second home ... and a key cog in the city's studio scene.

"I think Seattle has my favorite collection of studios and studio community of any town I've worked in," he said. "This is really a town where you can call the studio down the street and say, 'My tape machine's broken; do you have something you're not using?' And someone will probably say, 'Yeah, we can totally help you out.' "

And the epicenter of that comfortable, community feel seems to be Avast!, which, with its wood-paneled walls, vintage consoles (in addition to the Trident, they've also got Lenny Kravitz's old API Legacy board in Studio B — "I feel like I'm sitting at the captain's chair of the Enterprise," Walla joked from behind its expanse) and delightfully worn décor, recalls nothing more than a massive rec room ... albeit one that comes with an espresso machine. It's where bands come to work on their records in a way that's largely unchanged from 20 years ago: no bells and whistles, just time-tested methods and well-aged gear. And it will probably never change.

For further proof of that, Walla showed us the studio's tape library — shelves of precariously stacked master recordings that contain a large portion of the recorded history of Seattle. And, somewhat fittingly, it's located in the bathroom.

"It's like half of what has ever been recorded in Seattle, I think, is probably stored in here," Walla laughed, ducking inside the tiny room. "[It's a] tape library; Seattle style."

Adele Cancels North American Tour Due To Laryngitis

The singer scraps the remaining nine dates on her sold-out tour under doctor's advice.

Adele has canceled the remainder of her sold-out North American tour due to "ongoing illness," a spokesperson for her label, Columbia Records, announced Friday.

Last week, the British belter was forced to cancel a show in Minneapolis due to a case of laryngitis, but came back to perform a concert in Denver. Then, earlier this week, under doctor's orders, she canceled five West Coast gigs and hoped that her voice would improve with rest. Adele had originally planned to return to the stage on Saturday at San Francisco's Warfield Theatre, but those plans went awry when her vocal condition didn't improve.

"Adele recently postponed five shows under doctor's orders when she was diagnosed with laryngitis," a statement from Columbia read. "While resting in Los Angeles, Adele met with an otolaryngology specialist who determined it was imperative that she take the next few weeks to recover with absolute voice rest."

All told, the final nine dates of her tour will be scrapped.

"I'm really frustrated," Adele said in a statement. "I was hoping with a week's rest, I'd be better to sing again straight away. However, there is absolutely nothing I can do but take the doctor's advice and rest some more. I'm so sorry."

Columbia said that plans to reschedule the cancelled tour dates "are being investigated," and that more information would be provided.

Since launching in North America in early May, Adele's tour has been a sold-out smash, thanks in no small part to the continued success of her 21 album, which has sold nearly 2 million copies since being released in February and has topped the Billboard albums chart on nine different occasions.

Nas Says <i>Life Is Good</i> Will Be Music For 'Survivors'

'It's crazy how a phrase like that can change somebody's mentality,' Esco says about album title's good vibes.

Nas is living the good life. After the Queensbridge MC revealed the title of his 10th studio album over the weekend, he caught up with DJ Envy of MTV's Sucker Free and dropped more details about Life Is Good.

"Life is also good; the moment you think it ain't good, it's over," Nas said.

With his 1994 debut album, titled Illmatic, Nas introduced new slang; he sparked debate with his 2006 album title, Hip Hop Is Dead; and then he started a whirlwind of controversy when he first proposed to name his 2008 LP N-----. And for this upcoming project, Nas said the title has meaning too, a reflection of his positive outlook on life.

"Look at the life we're in, look at the world we're in — I just think people need to realize the blessings. Let's stop worrying about the dark side," he said. "The end result is life is good, and it's crazy how a phrase like that can change somebody's mentality."

Nas even revealed the name of the album's first single, "Nasty," which is a play on his original moniker, Nasty Nas. Still, even though he's giving a nod to his lyrical beginnings, the rapper promises that the track will fit the times. "We ain't going backwards, we're staying forward though," he said.

Life Is Good isn't finished (Nas said it's "almost there"), but it will be a very personal work. Nas insisted he won't shy away from addressing what he's been through in the past few years, including his divorce from singer Kelis.

"This album is just a piece of my blood, flesh and bones. This album right here is like — this is the one. They all are the ones, I love all my joints, but this one right here is, 'Life is good.' I'm letting a lot go on this. I'm happy that I'm here, man. I'm just a survivor and I look at a lot of us as survivors," he said. "Everything is addressed; it's all life. No matter what, at the end of the day, everything is a blessing. I'm a learner, I learn from my experiences."

And it's all good.

Paramore Roar Back With New Single, 'Monster'

Band's first song since the departure of Josh and Zac Farro seems to address breakup.
By James Montgomery

"You" can be a worrisome word. A weighty one. By its very definition — "the one or ones being addressed" — it is up for interpretation, and when it's used in a song, things get even more muddy. Does "you" refer to the listener or the public at large? Does it take the place of the subject of the lyric, someone who has wronged, inspired, doubted, betrayed the writer? Or does "you" even have to be a person? Couldn't someone "want" or "love" a refreshing beverage or an old car or, you know, drugs?

Shoot, now that we're on the subject, maybe we're never supposed to figure out who or what "you" is referring to (the classic example, of course, being Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," which is apparently about Warren Beatty ... or David Geffen ... or David Bowie, depending on whom you ask).

I only bring this up because in Paramore's brand-new song "Monster," which premiered Friday on the band's official site, Hayley Williams uses the Y-word a lot. And given everything that has lead up to the song's debut — a string of drama that included the departure of founding member (and Williams' old flame) Josh Farro, a rather nasty "exit statement," a tell-all interview with MTV News and the band's steadfast determination to continue onward — it's rather impossible not to wonder who she's referring to ... especially given the existence of kiss-offs like "You were my conscience, so solid/ Now you're like water, and we started drowning/ Not like we'd sink any further" and "Now that you're gone/ The world is ours."

So, is Williams singing about Josh Farro? It's difficult to think otherwise ... then again, perhaps, like Simon, she'll never let us know. Because, really, the subject of the song isn't as important as its very existence, a statement any Paramore fan will certainly agree with. "Monster" officially kicks off the next chapter in the band's story and does so roaringly, with spindly, chiming guitars (which recall one of Williams' favorite bands, mewithoutYou), crushing chords, a massive chorus and a stalking backbeat. Based on the song, it seems like new Paramore will be very much like old Paramore, seemingly minus the drama that drained them for years. Even if we don't know who Williams' "you" is, it's good to have her — and the band — back.

It's not often that two actresses who have appeared alongside one another in one movie have also played the same role in separate films at different times in their respective careers, but that's just the case with "The Help" co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Emma Stone.

If you're a bit confused now, let us quickly untangle this web of a description for you. Howard appeared as the character Gwen Stacy in 2007's "Spider-Man 3," while Stone has taken on the same part for the upcoming superhero reboot "The Amazing Spider-Man."

On Thursday night, when Stone and Howard sat down for the latest installment of MTV's Sneak Peek Week, they opened up about both playing Spider-Man's love interest. When MTV News caught up with the ladies before the Q&A session, we just had to ask Stone what it was like to see the new Spidey, Andrew Garfield, all decked out in his webbed spandex best.

"He looks like Spider-Man, ya know?" she shared. "It's pretty exciting."

Howard also gave her thumbs-up to the latest Spider-Man. "I saw Andrew in a leaked photo," she said. "And he looked really good."

The former Gwen Stacy isn't only excited about Garfield picking up where Tobey Maguire left off, but she's given her blessing, quite enthusiastically, to Stone too.

"I'm one of those people that goes online and reads gossip about movies, so pretty early on, there was some buzz," Howard explained, adding that she visited Stone in her trailer on the set of "The Help" the minute she heard the casting news. "I was stoked."

Stone elaborated a bit more about her time on set as Stacy, sharing that she had a joyous time making "The Amazing Spider-Man," which was directed by Marc Webb. "It was great; it was really wonderful," she dished about shooting the film. "It's something we both, for some reason, get to be a part of, which is wonderful."

Stick with MTV News all week as we gear up for the 2011 MTV Movie Awards this Sunday with a Sneak Peek Week screening and live-stream Q&A session every night this week.

'X-Men: First Class': The Reviews Are In!

'McAvoy and Fassbender are a casting triumph,' EW's Lisa Schwarzbaum writes.
By Terri Schwartz

Now that we've introduced you to the mutants of "X-Men: First Class," movie reviewers are saying you might want to take that relationship to the next level. Heralded as the best installment in the franchise since the Bryan Singer-directed "X2," Matthew Vaughn's take on the "X-Men" story is said to be both smart and action-packed.

At the top of the pile of praise are leads James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, whom reviewers are commending for their roles whether they liked the film or not. The rest of the supporting cast, from Jennifer Lawrence to Kevin Bacon, are receiving plenty of love as well. Dissenters might find flaws with the movie's pacing or the way it strays from the previous films' and comics' mythology, but the underlying message is that this is the summer blockbuster that fans have been waiting for.

The Story
"Fortunately for the film, the missile crisis puts an end to the dramatic lull. As soon as war threatens, 'X-Men: First Class' regains its momentum, and then some, with Strangelovian twists — a circular war room, a rogue vessel that can't be reached — and a climax that uses newsreel clips of President Kennedy on TV to lend credibility to an exuberant rearrangement of history. This fifth episode in the series isn't a masterpiece — one puzzlement is the uneven cinematography — but it's summer entertainment of a very high grade that leaves you with an appetite for more of the same with the same core cast. And a couple of uncredited cameos turn the neat trick of being revenants from the future." — Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal

The Leads
"To get to the headline immediately, McAvoy and Fassbender are a casting triumph. These two have, yes, real star magnetism, both individually and together: They're both cool and intense, suave and unaffected, playful and dead serious about their grand comic-book work. I hope movie-studio telepaths reteam the two in the future." — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

The Legacy
"In fact, roughly the first half of this massive and very well-cast origins extravaganza is arguably the best hour of Marvel Comics-derived filmmaking among the torrent of it that's cascaded across screens in recent years. Audacious, confident and fueled by youthful energy, this is a surefire summer winner for a wide global audience." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

The "Bond" Connection
"In all but name, 'First Class' is a Bond movie, from the Cold War scheming of rival superpowers to the script's plethora of glamorous or treacherous locations — right up to the end, with an animated credits sequence very much in the spirit of Maurice Binder's work on the Bonds. Above all, it [features] a handsome, platinum-jawed agent: Erik [Lehnsherr, portrayed by Fassbender], with Sean Connery's aplomb and Daniel Craig's ruthless determination. (In this context, the more thoughtful, sedentary Charles Xavier [McAvoy] is M to Erik's Bond.)" — Richard Corliss, Time

The Final Word
"It's remarkable how many things 'First Class' gets right, whether it's the decision to have characters speak different languages as the film's frequent globe-trotting dictates, or the casting of Fassbender and McAvoy, who bear no resemblance to their respective older counterparts (Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart) but perfectly capture Charles and Erik's symbolic might-vs.-right dynamic." — Justin Chang, Variety
