According to Drake, his video for "Over" should be out very soon and the clip shows a choice he had to make in real life.

"It captures ... it takes the song to another place," he told MTV News in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, during the opening night of his Away From Home Tour. "It offers up a whole different look for the song. The song — to a lot of people — is ignorant, it's club. This video is what I was really thinking about. The song is like a bad dream — but it's not a bad dream, it's not a terrible dream. It's a little evil. The video really reflects that. It's a struggle between the purities of my past life and what this new life has to offer. Even in the video, you see me looking back and forth between the two and deciding. At the end of the video I don't necessarily make a decision, but when you get the album, you'll see what choice I make."

"Over" is early in the Thank Me Later track list, and is part of a story that's told through the album.

"Initially it was a warm-up record," he added of "Over." "I love the song. I love the message in the song. It's funny, because 'Over' is the fourth song on the album and it's the turning point in the album. It's like, you get three songs of me sort of trying to paint the picture of what the last year has been like for me — trying to fill you in, almost let you into my world as much as I can. 'Over' is that moment where you're almost worried on the album. 'Is this kid about to ... ? What's happening? Is he changing?' I wanted that to come out first. I wanted people to be a little nervous. This whole journey could have changed me drastically. Fortunately I'm able to step out of my shoes and reflect on it and give you some great music. 'Over' is a great alter-ego moment. It's the dark side of things and I really wanted that to come out first."

Thank Me Later is in stores June 15.

'American Idol' Judges Save Michael Lynche

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 07:50 AM PDT

He was joined by Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly in this week's bottom three.

On Tuesday night's "American Idol," we had extended didgeridoo bellowing, a winsome bagpiper slowly descending a staircase and a dude bounding onstage to embrace Siobhan Magnus. How would Wednesday's (April 7) results show top all that WTF-ness? With a controversial judges' save, of course!

Viewers decreed that it was big-hearted (and equally big-bodied) crooner Michael Lynche's turn to go — a bit of a shock after the "Idol" judges praised his reworking of the Beatles' "Eleanor Ribgy" — and as the studio audience howled their disapproval, Lynche strode to the center of the stage and belted out a version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work," the same song that brought judge Kara DioGuardi to tears a few weeks earlier.

As Lynche finished, the audience cheered wildly, his wife wept, and the judges conferred. Simon Cowell played the drama to the hilt, speaking in slow, pregnant pauses as the room fell deathly quiet.

"The frustrating thing is, Michael, is that we all wish you did something like that yesterday, and this is why you're in the position you're in right now," Cowell said. "We only have one save in the competition. This is unanimous, Michael, if it's any comfort, and we have decided we're going to see you next week."

With that, the audience squealed with delight (Lynche's wife nearly leapt out of her dress), and the man dubbed "Big Mike" was mobbed by his fellow "Idol" contestants. Even the judges seemed to be excited, giving him a standing ovation as Lynche pounded his chest and blew kisses to his wife.

Lynche's save, of course, means that two "Idol" hopefuls will be getting the boot next week, and we suspect things will be a lot less jovial then.

Wednesday's bottom three was made up entirely of guys — Lynche, Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly — a fact "Idol" producers didn't reveal until more than 30 minutes into the show and only after performances by Jason Derülo and former "Idol" fave David Archuleta. They also split the guys into two groups of three before revealing which trio was in the bottom. Kelly was immediately sent to safety, leaving Lynche and Garcia to sweat it out.

While they did that, Rihanna took the stage to perform her latest single, "Rockstar 101" (featuring her sorta shredding on guitar), and then Garcia was spared.

Before any of that happened, host Ryan Seacrest grouped the three remaining girls — Magnus, Crystal Bowersox and Katie Stevens — together and made them twist a bit under the spotlight before declaring them all safe.

All in all, it may have been a didgeridoo-free evening, but it was certainly not short on WTF — something that will seemingly continue on next week's show, when Adam Lambert will serve as the guest mentor.

Were you surprised Big Mike was saved? Let us know in the comments below!

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

It's been a while since we had Curtis Jackson around these parts in Mixtape Daily. Our fellow Queens native has been on the road for a while, making movies and touring overseas. While hollering at our colleagues at MTV UK, Fif revealed that he wants his Black Magic album to drop before summer is over — oh, and the title has nothing to do with witchcraft.

"I don't believe in voodoo," he said. "But it'll be very addictive. The first time you'll hear it, you'll remember the songs that's on there. It's designed for fun — for listening pleasure.

"I'm not in a hurry," he added about the recording process and release date. "I kind of planned on releasing Black Magic ... I gave myself a goal to try and put it out by the end of the summer, so I'll work that hard on the actual project. If I don't feel it's ready by the end of the summer, I'll just jeep it."

Fif is also going on tour this summer, but said members of his current G-Unit family, including Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo, most likely won't make the trek.

"It's interesting because they probably won't be coming with me. In the U.S., Banks has momentum with the first single off his new album, 'Beamer, Benz or Bentley.' So he'll be out [on his own tour] with H.F.M. 2 (The Hunger For More 2). While he's doing that, it probably wouldn't make sense for Yayo to come with me because his record is almost done now — he should use that time to complete his record and release it shortly after. But I'll be running around."

No Banks or Yayo, but Fif says he will not be alone — he's recruiting new members to his camp now.

"You'll see new faces, because I'm looking for new artists now. I'll sign new artists and take them with me and kinda groom them. I don't specifically say, 'I want this kind of artist' — I look for talent that inspires me, that complements what I do with their own thing. Some of the stuff you can't teach a person; they gotta have it."

While 50 didn't name any specific prospects, but did say he wouldn't mind adding movie heartthrob Robert Pattinson to the Unit's fold. The star of the "Twilight" franchise (50 said he's seen "New Moon") has dabbled in singing in addition to his acting.

"Robert Pattinson. He has a big enough following to be the frontline," 50 laughed. " 'Twilight' ain't no joke."

'American Idol' Midterm: Experts Grade Ellen DeGeneres So Far

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 01:43 AM PDT

Jury is mixed on how DeGeneres has fit into the club.
By Gil Kaufman

As anyone who has switched high schools mid-year can tell you, it's never easy fitting in with the cool kids.

Midway through her first season on "American Idol," talk-show host/ comedian Ellen DeGeneres hasn't tripped and dropped her lunch tray in front of the whole school yet, but she also hasn't exactly gotten the lead in the school production of "Grease," according to our panel of experts.

DeGeneres was ostensibly brought in to add a touch of humor to the judges' table following the departure of judge Paula Abdul. But our "Idol" watchers said she was also tapped to beef up the panel before Simon Cowell's departure, which became an eventuality before Ellen even had a chance to warm up her seat. And while she hasn't set the show on fire, she's made her presence felt with some patented wacky metaphors (see "ripe banana") and her signature "I really like you" compliments.

"Ellen started off strong in Hollywood Week," said MTV News "Idol" aficionado Jim Cantiello. "As a die-hard 'Idol' fan, I was relieved that she took the job so seriously. ... Ellen was intoit. She kept her comic shtick to a minimum. It appeared she had a nice balance between Paula's compassion and Simon's acerbic wit. I was stoked."

Once the live shows started, though, Cantiello said DeGeneres' critiques turned into endless run-on sentences, and the bad reviews almost always ended with "but I like you!" or "you're adorable!"

"I guess she was trying to cushion the blow, but it just clouded her criticism," he said, lamenting that DeGeneres' hug for Tim Urban after his cover of "Hallelujah" probably helped the iffy singer solidify a spot in the top 12.

Bob Thompson, professor of television and popular culture of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse and an avid "Idol" watcher since day one, said he could sum up his feelings on DeGeneres in one word: disappointment.

"Ellen is a very talented comic presence," he said. "I've seen her do stand-up, and she's really good at off-the-cuff stuff on her talk show. When I first heard she was becoming a judge, I thought two things: What credibility does Ellen DeGeneres have in judging future music stars? And, besides that massive gap in her résumé, she has to be really amusing on the show."

This far into the season, Thompson said he is surprised at how unfunny DeGeneres has been and how she seems to be a totally different person than she is on her highly rated, very entertaining daytime talker. "The reason I think she can't be funny and charming on 'Idol' is that there's a sense that she feels out of her element ... that she's been put into a job she doesn't have the credentials to do," he said.

As wacky as Abdul was, she had a long career in music to back her up, credentials she shared with Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi, not to mention music veteran Cowell. "There may be a real sense of insecurity that she doesn't feel confident that she can be competent to judge these people, and it seems to have put a real damper on her usual presentational style," he said.

An admitted "Idol" booster, Rickey Yaneza of "AI" blog Rickey.org, begged to differ. He thought despite some rough bits at the beginning, DeGeneres had settled in very well and has so far dispelled fears from some show die-hards that her jokes would overpower the rest of the panel.

"That hasn't happened, and I think she's done a good job so far," he said, noting that the banana bit and her playful fighting/flirting with Cowell have provided some of the only water-cooler moments of an otherwise lackluster season. "I don't think that there was anything that was missing before that she's filling in. She's just being Ellen, and she's adding some nice comedy bits. In the past, the humor on the show has been Simon's sarcastic jokes, but now we can laugh at a contestant, and they can laugh back."

If there is any discomfort on the part of DeGeneres, who often looks torn when dissing singers, Yaneza said it probably comes from the queen of nice not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings.

Given that she's hosted the Emmys and Oscars and has decades of experience as a stand-up and TV host, Entertainment Weekly writer Michael Slezak said DeGeneres has been a surprisingly slow study at the judges' table.

"Visible nerves are an issue," he said. "But her biggest problem since we've reached the live-performance episodes is that she just doesn't take ownership of her opinion. She's almost apologetic for her critiques and will occasionally even point out her lack of music credentials." The latter is a shame, Slezak said, because a lot of times DeGeneres' instincts have been right, and she's undercut them by being self-deprecating.

"She doesn't have to hide behind the mask of 'I'm just like the people, I'm a music fan,' " he said. "Because she does have the right to say what is good in terms of performances as the host of a successful daytime talk show where music plays a big part."

After a strong start in Hollywood, Slezak said DeGeneres appeared to lose her way for several weeks when the show went live, finally getting her groove back last week when she quipped about fans at home participating in Tim Urban drinking games and speculating she wouldn't be able to gush about how adorable he is for much longer. "She was much tougher than she has been, and I hope that's the turning point," he said, speculating that she might have watched earlier shows and realized she was underperforming. "The two biggest things she needs to do is convey her points with authority and a sense of humor. She has to be willing to be viewed as someone who doesn't always give out gold stars."

On the upside, Cantiello is not as annoyed with DeGeneres as he was with DioGuardi at this point during the songwriter's first year on the panel, but he's also not jumping for joy.

"If I had one piece of advice for Ellen, I'd say learn when to shut up," he said of the comedian whose style often involves run-on, awkward stammering. "She is getting better at that. Say your piece, get in, get out."

How do you think Ellen has been doing on "Idol" so far? Do you have any pointers for her? Sound off in the comments below!

Coheed And Cambria Credit 'Devoted' Fans For MTV Musical March Madness Win

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 03:00 AM PDT

'They definitely won us this thing,' frontman Claudio Sanchez tells MTV News.
By James Montgomery

When Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez heard his band had won MTV's Musical March Madness, he reacted in a way most men would when they've just won a (fairly) major tournament of champions: He finished cleaning the algae off his deck.

"I was cleaning the deck of our house, getting the algae off of it, because we're about to leave for tour, and my wife came outside, laughing, and said, 'Oh my God, you guys won,' " Sanchez told MTV News on Wednesday (April 7). "That was about it. We didn't really have champagne or anything, but after I'm finished with this interview, I might crack a beer open and sit down to a game of 'God of War 3.' "

Yes, it was a pretty raucous celebration at the Sanchez household. But all kidding aside, Sanchez said he and his bandmates were legitimately honored to win MTV's inaugural tournament — especially because it was their rabid fanbase that led them to victory in the first place.

"Well, I don't know what the fanbases are for the other bands, but I know our fanbase is beyond devoted. They let us do the things we do, and they definitely won us this thing," Sanchez laughed. "I can't say enough about them. ... I mean, at first, I was only kind of following [the tournament] a little bit. My wife told me about it, and I gave it a glance. And I know some of the monitors on Cobalt and Calcium [a Coheed fan site], and they would send me a text message telling me who we were up against. For me, and for all of us, it was mostly about the fans and their dedication to our band."

Sanchez said he would even vote in some of Coheed's early round matchups ("Oh, I voted for us, of course"), but he never really believed his band had a chance of winning. All that changed when C&C knocked off presumptive favorites Phish in the Sweet 16. Then they disposed of Alice in Chains in the Elite Eight and headed for a Final Four showdown with Tokio Hotel. Suddenly, everyone in the Coheed camp started paying attention.

"When we beat Phish, that's when I started to notice. I was like, 'Wow, this is, like, kind of serious.' And then, I wasn't really familiar with Tokio Hotel, but our management was like, 'They're a big band worldwide,' " Sanchez said. "So then I was like, 'It's been a good run for us, but maybe this is where we lose out.' Only, it wasn't."

And after beating Tokio in the Final Four, they rolled over My Chem in the title game. And at that point, Coheed's dream run through the tournament was complete: They were the unlikeliest of champions. And now that they've won, Sanchez is itching to swing by MTV News' HQ and pick up the trophy. He hasn't quite figured out what he'll do with it just yet, but he's kicking around a few ideas.

"This was a battle for the fans, so I'm trying to figure out a way to share it with them. It was their victory," he said. "I'm trying to contact the fellow that runs Cobalt and Calcium, because I might present it to him. Or maybe we'll take it out on tour and let all the fans see it and take pictures with it. Who knows?"

What did you think of Coheed's victory? Did you vote to make them champs? Let us know in the comments!

Rihanna Rocks Out 'American Idol' With New Single 'Rockstar 101'

She's one of the biggest stars in the music industry, and it's one of the most popular television shows in the world. It's no surprise, then, that millions eagerly anticipated Rihanna's much-hyped performance on Wednesday evening's (April 7) "American Idol." And by all accounts, the chart-topper delivered.

"I told ya, baby," Rihanna promised as she kicked off her new single "Rockstar 101." Taking a break from the competitors, "Idol" gave center stage to the black-leather-catsuit-clad singer, whose shoulder pads were nearly as huge as her presence.

Surrounded by flames and a video screen displaying rock staples like guitars, lightning bolts and skulls, Rihanna belted out the Rated R track in a half-sung, half-spoken voice. As she slid across the stage and interacted with backup singers, she made sure that her first "American Idol" performance was a memorable one — even picking up a Flying V at one point, although her guitar skills seemed limited to running a finger up one string.

"Rocking these diamonds, I'm rocking this chain/ Make sure you get a picture, I'm rocking my fame," she sang in a song as much about dressing like a rocker as actually being one. "To be what you is, you gotta be what you are/ The only thing I'm missing is a black guitar."

When she wasn't rocking out, Rihanna was apparently posing for photos backstage with "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest. "Rockstar 101" is the new single from her Rated R album, which the Barbadian singer released last November, debuting at #4 on the Billboard chart.

While on tour in the UK recently, 50 Cent talked about Lady Gaga and Beyoncé's recent "Telephone" video and used it as a jumping-off point to talk about what he feels are double standards in video censorship.

"I think it's hot," he told MTV UK of the video. "It's interesting how [the censors] let things go. Standards on each artist are held completely different. The 'P---y [Wagon].' I'd like to see them leave that [license plate] clear and not blur it out when I make my next vehicle and it has the 'P---y Wagon' in it. You know? It's interesting they let that fly. 'It's Britney, bitch!' Nobody has a problem with that, but if I say, 'It's 50, bitch,' they say, 'Oh my God! You gotta edit that.'

"It's their personal perception of your intentions," 50 added about censors. "There's actually a shot [in 'Telephone'] at the table in the diner where it's just [breasts]. It looks great. But if I shot the same shot in my music video, they would make me edit it immediately. Even if I had a female talent that was a recognizable talent that I asked to be a part of the project, they wouldn't let that go. They'd think in some way you are taking advantage of a woman for marketing purposes. It's different standards. They'll ask [me] to ask tell the girl to not turn around ... if she's dancing, for her to not turn around [in my video]. That's the whole J.Lo show! It's interesting, the standards they place on each artists."

50 says even though some broadcast standards may not be fair, he does have love for Gaga and some of other queens of popular music. In a lighthearted part of the interview, Fif was asked whether he'd "kiss, marry or avoid?" Gaga, Beyoncé or Rihanna.

"I would kiss Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Rihanna," he replied with a laugh. "I'd marry Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Rihanna — in Africa. I'd have three wives! I would avoid wearing condoms and make really big families."

Just days after it was announced that Nicki Minaj would be joining Ke$ha as an opening act for Rihanna's Last Girl on Earth Tour this summer, the Young Money rapper has decided to not participate, according to a tweet she posted on Wednesday (April 7).

Late Tuesday, Minaj took to Twitter to hint at the news. "*sighs* how ... how do i say this ... hope the barbz [her fans] will understand ... hate letting them down. *sighs again while in deep thought*," she wrote.

And on Wednesday afternoon, the rapper dropped the news. "Barbz I'm sorry 2 say I will not be going out on RiRi's tour. I've decided 2 use that time 4 the completion of my album. Hope u understand," she tweeted.

A rep for Minaj confirmed to MTV News that the MC is leaving the tour to complete her album.

Minaj's decision to focus on her debut album comes as a bit of a surprise, since she told MTV News in February that she wasn't in a rush to release the album because she felt people need to get used to seeing a female rapper again.

"With the album, just like with my mixtape, I never like to rush it," she said. "With the album, I think it's more important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again. Before I drop an album, people need to come out and see. People don't even know what a female rapper does."

However, fans can certainly see Minaj in the video for her single "Massive Attack." The clip, which features Amber Rose and producer Sean Garrett, was released last week.

While Minaj's name is still on the tour announcement on Rihanna's official site, it appears likely that the tour will proceed with a new opening act.

Are you disappointed that Nicki won't be on Rihanna's tour? Are you looking forward to her debut album? Let us know in the comments below!

'Glee' Stars Tell Oprah How The Show Has Changed Their Lives

'To be a part of a project that celebrates your differences ... has been very therapeutic,' Chris Colfer says.
By Eric Ditzian

The Gleeks invaded "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Wednesday (April 7). Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch and the rest of the cast of Fox's hit high school musical drama performed a rendition of fan favorite "Somebody to Love," took "Oprah" on a tour of their set and spoke with the host about how "Glee" has changed their lives.

"I was known as the musical-theater girl and nobody looked at that as being cool," Michele said. "It was odd to them. They didn't understand it. They didn't understand people who did the plays or who sang. It was cool if you played sports. It was very typical. I love that our show shows we can be cool too."

Lynch, a comedy vet with a string of film roles alongside the likes of Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, has also seen her public perception change vastly since "Glee" hit the airwaves last year — albeit in a slightly different manner. "My demo is 16-year-old boys," she laughed. "They never noticed me when I was 16, you know? I wasn't in the hip crowd. But now all of a sudden there's these cool people in coffee shops going, 'Hey!' I go back to my 14-year-old self."

It's just that idea of being accepted by those around you, series co-creator Ryan Murphy explained, that the show is trying to get across. "To me, the show is about celebrating the difference in you," he said. "I think when you're that age, you think the difference in you is the worst thing, and I think the older you get, you find out that it's the best thing. So that's what the show is about."

Of course, it's also about the music-filled drama of William McKinley High School, and the cast welcomed "Oprah" onto the Paramount set for a day in the life of "Glee." Work started at 7 a.m. as the cast shuffled onto the lot and got started with a dance rehearsal set to Parliament's "Give Up the Funk." From there, it was on to hair and makeup and then to wardrobe. Guest star Neil Patrick Harris was on hand to play what he described as a villainous character. The episode is set to air May 18.

Back at "Oprah," the cast kept coming back to the idea about how working on "Glee" had helped them come to terms with their true selves. "When I was in high school, I was kind of daily reminded of my imperfections by other students and sometimes the teachers," co-star Chris Colfer said. "To be a part of a project that kind of celebrates your differences and makes your disadvantages your advantages has been very therapeutic."

"Glee" returns next Tuesday after "American Idol."
