We Take You Inside The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter

Posted: 25 Mar 2010 03:51 AM PDT

'Time stands still when you're in there,' creative director Thierry Coup says of the attraction.
By Terri Schwartz

The attraction at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter that Universal Orlando is most excited about is Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, a ride they revealed to press and "Harry Potter" fan site webmasters on Wednesday. MTV got a chance to be one of the first inside Hogwarts castle, which is much more than just a pretty and accurate exterior.

Wizarding World creative director Thierry Coup said that just waiting in line for the ride portion of Forbidden Journey was worth the time, and Wednesday's visit explained why. Many of the iconic rooms and areas of Hogwarts castle that have been described in the "Harry Potter" books and seen in the movies have been re-created inside Universal's version of Hogwarts castle.

"It's the most immersive queue ever created," said Alan Gilmore, production consultant for the park and art director for some of the films. "Every moment here is a wonderful moment, really. You just take it all in."

The experience starts at the entrance to Hogwarts, where statues of winged boars like the ones from the film version of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" can be seen. A sign below says, "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry," but Gilmore revealed that when the park is opened on June 18, there will be a "magical" effect that will make it seem as though the words "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey" will appear etched by wand over the sign.

Guests will enter through the dungeon level of the park, where they will walk through in either the express, singles or regular line. The express line will miss out on the majority of the tour of Hogwarts. The dungeon area is designed with no "walls," to look as though it has been carved out of the mountain. Attendees will walk by the One-Eyed Witch statue and the Mirror of Erised, which Harry Potter sees in "The Sorcerer's Stone."

After passing through the dungeon area, visitors will go outside to the Hogwarts greenhouse, where Professor Sprout's class studies Herbology. Coup and Gilmore said there is still horticulture to be planted before the park opens — but there were "sleeping" mandrake roots in a cage near the entrance back into the castle and there will be a giant vine, like in the films, creeping around the greenhouse.

The entrance back into the castle is what Coup called the "Oxford Corridor," and was basically a re-creation of the many corridors Harry and his friends walk through in the films. There is a statue of the architect of Hogwarts, who is standing with a lion, badger, snake and eagle to represent the four houses. At the end of the corridor is the griffin statue which, in the books and film, provides a magical staircase to Dumbledore's office.

Past the statue are moving paintings, which Universal used special technology to re-create. The first is of Professor Swoopstikes, who is talking about insects to the guests. The next one is of people watching Quidditch, and if visitors watch long enough, Swoopstikes will enter the Quidditch painting. The next room is the portrait room with about 100 paintings, both moving and not, of the founders and major people involved in Hogwarts. The paintings talk to themselves and to the guests, mostly questioning why Muggles are in Hogwarts, with a script designed to avoid repetition.

Finally guests will arrive in Dumbledore's Office, which is their intended destination in the castle according to Forbidden Journey's story line. Express guests will have skipped all the previous rooms and end up in the office after walking from the dungeons through a different portrait gallery.

Gilmore said this room was a more faithful reproduction of the office than in the films — it was something he and the films' production designer, Stuart Craig, always wanted to do. It looks identical to the room in the films, with all the same paraphernalia and knickknacks lying around.

A 3-D projection of Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore greets the guests for their planned lecture from the ghost Professor Bins on the history of Hogwarts — after all, "today" (or every day in the Wizarding World) is the "first" day Muggles are being allowed to tour Hogwarts.

Guests then walk into the Defense Against Dark Arts classroom, with a skeleton of a dragon hanging from the ceiling while a chalkboard with a Dementors and "Expecto Patronum" lesson sits at the front of the room. Harry, Ron and Hermione appear in the back of the classroom from under an invisibility cloak and convince visitors to skip the lecture and go see a Quidditch tournament instead.

Visitors are supposed to meet Hermione in the Room of Requirement, but have to walk past the animated portrait of the Fat Lady and through Gryffindor common room in order to do so. There are three moving paintings in this room: one of a Quidditch player, one of an etiquette teacher and one of a professor who explains in magical terms how the ride portion of Forbidden Journey will work. Here guests who don't wish to ride the attraction but wanted to see the castle can leave if they wish.

The tour ends in the Gryffindor common room, though the Sorting Hat and Room of Requirement are still ahead. It is in the Room of Requirement that guests can get on the ride, described as a "magically enchanted bench," and see various beloved scenes from the series. Universal would not share the details of how this portion would work, instead saying they would prefer to maintain a "magical" element to the ride.

The entire experience of the queue and ride are expected to be around an hour, Coup said, though to him "time stands still when you're in there." He said he always loved the stories and would read the books and show the movies to his son when he was growing up.

"Watching his face when he was watching the movie and realizing we were going to be able to bring this to life ... for me, it was the experience of a lifetime."

Paige Miles Sent Packing On 'American Idol'

Less than 24 hours after "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell chastised this year's crop of contestants — well, all of them except for Crystal Bowersox — for not pushing themselves hard enough, voters got a chance to have their say on the matter during Wednesday night's (March 24) results show. And, well, they pretty much said the same thing.

Yes, it was judgment night for the "Idol" top 11, and Paige Miles, whose take on Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" Tuesday night was pretty underwhelming, was the one voters sent packing.

"It was a roller coaster of a lifetime," the emotional Miles told host Ryan Seacrest after learning her fate. "I had a lot of health issues going on out here, laryngitis ... and [some] bad song choices, but I still had a blast, and it was a great learning experience."

Miles didn't even get the chance to sing for her safety, as Cowell shot down any hope of her earning the judges' save immediately after she was eliminated.

"Regardless of your singing, you're going to end up going home tonight," Cowell said. "It's gotten to a point where it's not working. I don't want to give you any false hope here. It's the end."

Dang.

Joining Miles in the bottom three was Tim Urban, whose saccharine version of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and subsequent onstage knee slide mystified viewers and judges alike (though, it should be noted that guest mentor Miley Cyrus thought said slide "was awesome"). Katie Stevens, who turned Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" into an adult-contemporary number, also ended up among the lowest vote-getters.

Stevens was immediately saved, meaning she was guaranteed a slot on this summer's Idols Live! Tour (as you are probably aware, the top 10 contestants land a bunk on the tour bus), but Urban was left to sweat it out until the very end of the broadcast, while an audience that included Siobhan Magnus' blood-soaked cheering session — the so-called "Siobhanbies" ... you know, like zombies — looked on.

They actually got to see a pretty good show too. Cyrus performed a sweeping version of her single "When I Look at You," aided by a grand piano, a backing band and tons of dry-ice smoke, and real-life sweethearts Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato dueted on "Make a Wave."

But the show closed with Miles hitting the road and the "Idol" top 10 firmly in place. Next week, they'll tackle soul and R&B with special guest mentor Usher.

Were you sad to see Paige go? What did you think of the night's performances? Let us know in the comments!

'The Hills': Next Season Will Be Its Last

'The Hills: Final Season' to premiere April 27.
By MTV News staff

The season finale of "The Hills" in December left a lot of unanswered questions: Will Kristin and Justin Bobby last? Was that really the last time Audrina and Justin Bobby will ever speak? Will Brody actually break up with Jayde? And will Heidi and Spencer ever have a little Pratt? Those questions will become a lot more dramatic during the show's sixth and final season, which was announced by Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday (March 24).

Yes, the forthcoming season will be the show's last. "I think we've told the story of struggle and of finding yourself in L.A.," creator Adam DiVello told EW. "A lot of these kids have found themselves and have certainly embarked on different careers and different paths."

Indeed, many of the events of the past few months find their way into the season, including Heidi Montag's plastic surgery, the results of which she shows to her mother in the first episode. "We tell the whole story," DiVello said. "We pick right up where Heidi goes and sees her parents. And our cameras are there that minute the mother opens the door and sees her daughter for the first time." Executive producer Liz Gateley added, "It's a really touching but heartbreaking scene to watch."

DiVello also commented on rumors that Montag's husband Spencer Pratt had left the show. "Spencer is dealing with some stuff right now, and once he gets through that, we'll be back to shooting with Spencer again. Bottom line is you will see him. He'll be in most of the episodes."

Also in the show's final 12 episodes, fans will see Audrina Patridge dating singer Ryan Cabrera and Kristin Cavallari contending with rumors of drug abuse. "When Kristin was in Miami for the Super Bowl, there was definitely some late nights for her and some speculation that she might be partying a little too hard," Gateley said. "So we're definitely going to cover that part of Kristin. We're pretty much covering everything you've read [about in the tabloids]."

And perhaps most pressing of all, will Lauren Conrad, who left the show in 2009, be back? We'll just have to wait and see, although DiVello did say: "I always joked it would be nice to see Lauren get married."

"The Hills: Final Season" premieres on April 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT followed by "The City" at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Tech N9ne Says He Found Success On The Road

Posted: 25 Mar 2010 03:51 AM PDT

The independent rapper explains to Mixtape Daily how touring builds his fanbase.
By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Shaheem Reid

Cornerstone Credentials

Tech N9ne certainly isn't a household name. He isn't necessarily a big name in the realm of hip-hop either, but thanks to appearing at festivals like Rock the Bells and touring on his own, he's been able to sell over a million records and build a solid, dedicated fanbase. As he prepares to drop his newest album, The Ollie Gates Mixed Plate, named after a restaurant in his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, he told Mixtape Daily about the unconventional road he took to get here.

"Being involved in all of those major labels in the past, nobody knew really how to do me, how to put me," Tech said. "But who knows how to do me better than anybody: me."

He and his business partner, Travis O'Guin, formed their independent Strange Music label in 1999. Since then, they have enjoyed complete autonomy to do whatever they wanted with their music and their appearance.

That's also meant that he's been able to go on tour to places where no one knew who he was. Tech said that they would play small-town shows with only 10 people in the audience, and he would still perform. When they came back the next time, there would be 30 people, and 200 people the following time.

"If you want to be the hip-hop president, you've got to get out there and politic," reasoned the rapper who won the Left Field Woodie Award from mtvU last year.

Tech estimated that he does about 200 shows per year, a schedule that's more typical of a rock band. All the money they make on tour is pumped back into Strange Music as they sign other artists to the label. They've also built a huge $1.2 million facility in Kansas City.

He isn't surprised that other artists have started to go independent and tour heavily to support themselves. In the digital world, artists have had to find new ways to sell their music to the people. Meanwhile, he said major labels are failing because they don't take the time to build their artists' fanbase.

"We have that core fanbase that's always going to be there, so whether we put out CDs, whether it's going to be on iTunes or whatever, our fans are always going to be there," Tech N9ne said. "A lot of these major cats don't even have that. A lot of these major cats have sold over a million copies, but can't get 1,000 people to come see them. ... That ain't for us, though."

On Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET, fans can get a behind-the-scenes look at what it's like to be the teen idol as he travels the globe promoting his music. MTV News has been giving you some hints as to what you can expect from the special and here's another: While in Europe on a promotional tour, Bieber sat down to answer questions submitted by fans.

One question posed asks the singer what it's like to go from being a normal kid to being a pop-music sensation. "It was pretty crazy — waking up one day just regular, going to school and then next day going out performing for thousands of people," he said. "It's pretty crazy."

And how does he feel about his screaming fans? "You know, it's really crazy to just have so many fans and have them support me," he said. "I really like it." Bieber also shared that he's spied a cute girl or two in the masses. "I've seen [girls] in the crowd that have been pretty, for sure."

Speaking of fans, Bieber offered that he's had a fan's mom do something really crazy one time to meet him. "The craziest fan experience has probably been ... well, actually I was in America and there was this one girl's mom that got a tattoo of the radio DJ's face so that [her daughter] can meet me," he explained.

Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato And Joe Jonas Take Over 'American Idol'

On Tuesday night, Miley Cyrus dished out advice to the "American Idol" contestants to maximize their performances. On Wednesday night (March 24), however, the Disney princess took the stage herself to sing "When I Look at You" from her upcoming movie "The Last Song."

Cyrus seemed to take her own advice by connecting with the audience and making eye contact during the dramatic performance. Dressed in a long, white-satin dress, she started out playing a grand piano engulfed in fog and singing in a hushed tone. The quiet beginning belied what was still to come.

Once Miley stood up from the piano bench and took center stage for the second verse, she started belting out the song. Fitting the song's power-ballad feel, she even did some head-banging, whipping her long, wavy hair around violently as her guitarist tackled his solo.

The last line of the song — "You appear just like a dream to me" — matched the fantasy-like stage design, which included trees covered in twinkling lights.

The next performers in the jam-packed results show were new couple Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato, who sang their Friends for Change: Project Green song "Make a Wave." The inspirational track — which is set to be featured in the upcoming Disney film "Oceans" — stresses the importance of protecting the world's water habitat.

The pair stood side-by-side for the first verse before finally facing each other during the chorus, giving the audience just what they wanted. Demi even sang right to her Jonas Brother during the line: "Let's show a little love."

"Good chemistry between these two onstage right now," host Ryan Seacrest joked at the end of the performance.

What did you think of Miley's performance and Demi and Joe's duet? Let us know in the comments!

Nicki Minaj Calls Lil Wayne's Jail Time 'An Emotional Roller Coaster'

It's been a trying time for the Young Money camp since Lil Wayne began his yearlong prison bid. The rapper's sentencing and subsequent jail stint were delayed numerous times before he finally entered New York's Rikers Island. Nicki Minaj called the experience "confusing."

"His actual time to go in had been changing, up and down," she said during mtvU Spring Break. "So it's been an emotional roller coaster for all of us involved because we never knew when the last text message or that last hug was the actual last text message or hug. It was very, very strange. We wouldn't wish it on any crew in the game."

Lil Wayne took advantage of the additional time he was afforded to shoot more videos — he shot nearly 20 clips leading up to his imprisonment — and to make a guest appearance during Young Jeezy's set on Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Tour stop in New York. While Wayne is away, his team has pledged to keep the YM torch scorching hot.

Drake vowed to take the lead in Wayne's absence. "I'm gonna do everything I told him I would do, what I said in the song ['Over']: keep us afloat till he gets back," he told MTV News. "You won't even notice he's gone. Promise."

Minaj described the unusual circumstances that led to her, Drake and the rest of the Young Money crew appearing at mtvU Spring Break without Lil Wayne. Last year, Wayne was a part of the festivities, which also included performances by Jim Jones, Asher Roth and Kid Cudi. He brought Drake and Nicki along as guests during his set.

Now, it's their turn to apply the lessons Wayne taught them, Nicki said. "We remember last year being at MTV Spring Break, and Wayne was obviously the headliner," she recalled. "He's so much more than a headliner, he's a person that I look at, and I can't believe this guy is still going, after 20 to 30 minutes in the hot sun. To not have him here, it's like a life lesson for all of us — always work as if we have no one else to depend on — and that's what he teaches us. He did, like, 1,000 videos before he went in, knowing that he had to go to jail. A lot of us wouldn't do that. A lot of us would be curled up on a ball like, 'Oh my God, my life is about to be over.' So shout-out to Lil Wayne. We're honored that he chose each and every one of us, handpicked us. And we love him."

Young Money will appear on the "Sucker Free Countdown" Sunday at noon on MTV2 when Funkmaster Flex will interview the camp.

Whose performance did you like best at Spring Break? What do you think about the lessons Nicki Minaj says she learned from Lil Wayne? Let us know in the comments below!

Justin Bieber's Manager Pleads Not Guilty In Mall Incident

Justin Bieber's manager, Scott "Scooter" Braun, pleaded not guilty Wednesday (March 24) to charges of reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, stemming from a scheduled Bieber mall appearance last November that turned into a stampede and injured five fans.

Police allege that Braun failed to properly control the situation at Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, New York, when the crowd of 30,000 became unruly. At the time of the incident, police ordered Braun to send a message via Twitter to notify Bieber's followers that the event was canceled. Braun, however, refused to send the message, police said. Authorities contend Braun eschewed safety in favor of publicity. As things got out of hand, police said, Bieber's Twitter still read, "On my way to Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, NY to sign and meet fans! I'm pumped. See u there."

After news broke that Braun, 29, had turned himself in to authorities, Bieber defended his manager in a statement to PerezHilton.com.

"The lawyers are saying I can't say anything specific about what's going on with my manager Scooter Braun," Bieber said. "However, what I can say is that Scooter always acts in the best interests of the safety of my fans and myself. Also, I just wanted to let all my fans know that Scooter has the full support of my mother and me and we couldn't be more grateful for all he's done for us. Scooter — I miss you, man. Wish you were here."

TMZ posted footage of Bieber in Chicago on Wednesday afternoon sporting a "Free Scooter" T-shirt.

Earlier Wednesday, Bieber tweeted his support for Braun, writing, "You've got my total support @scooterbraun. Wish you were here in Chicago with us #FreeScooter."

After the enormous attention Lady Gaga's elaborate "Telephone" video has received, expectations are very high for her next one. The singer, who is currently on tour in Australia, talked with radio station Nova 96.9 FM and dished a bit about what she has in store for "Alejandro," the third clip from her Fame Monster LP.

"I'm so excited about the 'Alejandro' video," she told the station. "Actually, we're shooting it very soon and I don't want to say who the director is yet because it's going to give a lot away."

When asked if she could reveal anything more, it was evident that she intends on keeping the music video's concept secret.

"Are you absolutely mad? I would never, ever tell you!" she laughed. "I would be more likely to lie through my teeth to you what the video's about so that you could all be surprised. But I will tell you it's not the sequel to the 'Telephone' video."

WWD reported on Tuesday that fashion photographer Steven Klein will helm the clip, but that information had not been confirmed at press time; reps for Gaga and Klein had not confirmed or provided MTV News with details about the video.

For the moment, Gaga is enjoying touring Australia. "What mayhem in Melbourne tonight. Some kids just understand what it means live your eyeliner, breathe your lipstick, and kill for each other." she tweeted on Tuesday.

"Writing music, leopard tights, monster varsity jacket I'm grateful to have fans that continue to inspire me Ready to sweat tonight Melbourne," she Gaga tweeted a few hours later.
