In some ways, the first two weeks of this year's "American Idol" semifinals have felt a lot like an extension of the brutal Hollywood Week: a painful but necessary mass culling of the herd in order to get to the good stuff.

Four more singers went down Thursday night (March 4), including Michelle Delamor, Jermaine Sellers, Haeley Vaughn and John Park. Inexplicably, Tim Urban, the cute boy who has proven two weeks running that he is the luckiest guy on the stage, was given a pass, which allowed him to bust out his "what? me?" face yet again along with Todrick Hall, whose Tina Turner cover drew serious fire but also enough votes to keep him in the running.

Pumped-up Michael Lynche did it again with a solid James Brown cover, and Casey James was waved through despite a split decision from the panel on his cover of the oft-sung "I Don't Want To Be." That left Purple Haze singer Park standing after another messy week courtesy of John Mayer's "Gravity," which, in typical "Idol" fashion, Park sang way better on his way out after being eliminated, almost hitting half the notes and showing more personality and verve than he had in weeks.

The second man to go was testy soul man Jermaine Sellers, who got the dreaded "cabaret" putdown from Simon for his smooth-jazz version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." He was paired center stage with onetime front-runner Andrew Garcia, who kept on chugging despite a just so-so reception for his version of James Morrison's "You Give Me Something," which the panel felt lacked pizzazz.

That left suddenly surging rocker Lee Dewyze in the running after his solid take on Hinder's "Lips of an Angel." Nervous teen Aaron Kelly and equally nervous Alex Lambert, who is starting to come around thanks to a nuanced cover of John Legend's "Everybody Knows," also survived.

Sellers said it wasn't his unpredictable personality that did him in. "Where I sing from, you can't be taught how to riff and run and sing high notes," he said. "I'm a church singer. That's where my heart is." He tried to take it to church one more time as he gently sang his way off with the Gaye classic, hitting all the same nutty, seesaw notes that did him in to begin with.

For the ladies, the first casualty was Michelle Delamor, the somewhat bland R&B singer who took a chance that didn't pan out with Creed's power ballad "With Arms Wide Open." "I think I was so wrapped up in trying to do everything right while being judged that I kind of lost sight of just performing," she said dejectedly, promising to keep on keepin' on. The second run through "Arms" was no better and maybe a bit sharper, so America appeared to have gotten it right.

Didi Benami dodged a bullet, even after Simon compared her to a screeching cat thanks to her bomb-tastic cover of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me." Also making the grade were quirky jazz bird Lilly Scott, soul belter and possible new front-runner Paige Miles and high-schooler Katie Stevens, who still hasn't found her groove but did just enough with "Put Your Records On" to stick around again.

The second ax then fell on Haeley Vaughn, the teenage cow-pop wannabe who fell down hard with her attempt at Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" and appeared to sense she was not going to stick around. Standing next to her was Lacey Brown, who did what the judges suggested and sang Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me," even if they didn't like the results, and made it through anyway.

"I think I could definitely use some more experience," Vaughn said, lamenting that she's going to have to return to high school next week before making the rocky climb one more time.

Even with mixed results from the judges for her gutsy but very slow solo piano ramble through Coldplay's "The Scientist," Katelyn Epperly lived another day; resurgent leader Crystal Bowersox bounced back from possible elimination after her hospitalization Tuesday thanks to a winning version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Long as I Can See the Light"; and resident oddball Siobhan Magnus blew the room away with her note-heard-'round-the-world throwdown on Aretha Franklin's "Think."

Returning to the stage was last year's #3 finisher, Danny Gokey, who performed "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me," the debut single from his upcoming album. Rocking a leather jacket, jeans, a burgundy shirt and his signature specs, Gokey's gravelly soul voice was warmly received as he sang the peppy country/pop tune about the power of positive thinking. "I can be whatever I want to be/ My best days are ahead of me," he crooned over a twanging pedal-steel riff. "I've got sunsets to witness, dreams to dance with/ And beaches to walk on and lovers to kiss."

After spending most of his "Idol" run being tagged as "the guy with the tragedy" — a reference to the death of his young wife Sophia four weeks before his audition — Gokey said he wanted to come out with a first single that showed how much hope "Idol" gave him. "I just found out the writer of the song lost his wife too, and he wrote this song a few months after she passed away. And without me knowing it, I picked it up, I recorded it and put it on radio. ... It's an anthem for me. I'm excited about life again."

The group sing-along was to the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," with the girls doing a much better job of selling he corny lip-synch than the boys, who seemed like they were extras on a "Sesame Street" skit about positive hip-hop. The painfully cheesy segment did give us a glimpse of mullet man Lambert fake-shouting the lyric "Mazel Tov!" and Urban throwing up some painfully suburban rapper hands, as well as the quirky Magnus just saying no to tight skirts and leggings and going with ripped jean shorts over tights.

The girls will be back performing Tuesday, followed by the guys on Wednesday.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Mixtape: Snoop Dogg Presents: We Da West Volume One

Headliners: Snoop Dogg, DJ Whoo Kid and DJ Skee

Co-Stars: Nipsey Hussle, Kurupt, Tha Twinz, Soopafly, Katt Williams, Jay-Z and Ludacris

Essential Info: Snoop Dogg said his coast still needs to unify and the artists have to be leaders.

"All I just want is the n---as out here to see if you make good music and we are one, they're gonna get onboard and they gonna give you what you deserve," Snoop explained to DJ Whoo Kid, who hosts the tape with DJ Skee. "You gonna get your radio play, your spins. But if you ain't organized, n---as can come out here and pick and choose. They can take Nipsey, put Nipsey on a remix. Put Kurupt on a remix. They can never pick all of us and say, 'You all go on a mission. The West Fest Tour. All West Coast n---as go on tour.' "

Tha Dogg said his latest mixtape is the first of many to showcase up-and-coming talent.

"Volume One is just me bringing awareness to the artists. I have a vehicle to put their sh-- out, through people such as yourself," he told Whoo Kidd. "After this sh-- comes out, n---as need to be running to the studio. Now you can be heard and seen. Even if a n---a only hears your record once or twice, you in a new system. You not just local no more. You not just in your neighborhood. You in a world system now."

Last year, Snoop dropped his I Wanna Rock mixtape, and he said it was better than Malice N Wonderland because it was uncut.

"That sh-- was banging harder than my album, 'cause the mixtape, we don't have to make records to release to the radio," he said. "My label looking at me: 'We need a couple of songs for pop. We wanna go top 40.' Then I call these radio stations: 'Snoop Dogg, you're working on a new album. When is your album coming out?' Mutha----a, my album is out, n---a! 'Your single "Gangsta Love" is top 40.' N---a, I'm on the next single, 'I Wanna Rock.' Some gangsta sh--.

"It's so square, man," he said about working with the top 40 stations. "I'm so far in my career, I'm at the pinnacle. It's a mode I have to go to. I don't knock that, but I knock it when they say you have to do that to be successful."

What Has Danny Gokey Been Up To Since 'American Idol'?

Season-eight alum shows off his country makeover on 'Idol' results show with 'My Best Days Are Ahead of Me.'

On Thursday night's (March 4) "American Idol" results show, amid the carnage and the castaways, Danny Gokey performed "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me," the first proper single from his just-released debut album, My Best Days. It was a pretty sage move by show producers, and not just because Gokey has a disc to promote. The newly departed "Idol" hopefuls could learn a thing or two from the song's inspirational message. And from Gokey himself.

Asked why he went country for his first album, Gokey — who tried to get an invite from Ellen DeGeneres to dance on her show after his performance — said it was suggested by one of last year's mentors, country icon Randy Travis. "When I did 'Jesus Take the Wheel,' he came up to me after ... and he said, 'Have you ever considered doing country?' And I started telling him how country influenced me when I was younger ... and he said, 'Well, you need to do country. The amount of soul and passion you put into it, the fans would embrace you and love you.' "

After spending most of his "Idol" run being tagged as "the guy with the tragedy" — a reference to the death of his young wife Sophia four weeks before his audition — Gokey said he wanted to come out with a first single that showed how much hope "Idol" gave him. "I just found out the writer of the song lost his wife too and he wrote this song a few months after she passed away. And without me knowing it, I picked it up, I recorded it and put it on radio. ... It's an anthem for me. I'm excited about life again."

Ever since he was eliminated from "Idol" last season, Gokey has been working tirelessly to make his dreams a reality. Over the summer, he began meeting with Nashville record execs and announced plans to reinvent himself as a country singer, telling MTV News that "country music kind of houses the message that I like ... and it carries a lot of meaning for me. So I never thought about it before, but I could see myself doing it, if we could just get the twang right."

In September, he officially signed with RCA Nashville (he was the last of season eight's final four to land a record deal) and began work on his debut album. In November, during a phone interview with hometown radio station FM 106.1, he unveiled the first song from the record, a ballad called "It's Only," which was written by Lady Antebellum's Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley and produced by Mark Bright, who had previously worked with Gokey's fellow "Idol" alum Carrie Underwood.

Gokey described the song as his favorite off the album. "It has such a touching lyric. It's so beautiful," he said. "I love all the songs that appear on my CD, but this one ... when I sing this song, a passion comes out of me. ... I feel it when I sing it."

He performed at the venerable Grand Ole Opry and shot a video for "Best Days," which replaced "It's Only" as the first single from his record. The song began climbing country radio's top 40 chart, and just last month, it was announced that Gokey would serve as the opening act on Sugarland's spring tour. The country makeover, it would seem, is complete.

In the meantime, he continues to work with Sophia's Heart, the charitable organization he established in honor of his late wife. In addition to using funds to provide relief to the victims of January's Haitian earthquake, the organization plans to launch a Nashville-based music and arts program this year.

Young Jeezy Says Shawty Redd's Murder Arrest 'Hit Close To Home'

On Thursday, we told you that Young Jeezy's longtime collaborator Shawty Redd will definitely be on Thug Motivation 103, due in June.

Redd has been entangled in a potentially life- and career-altering legal battle since he was arrested on New Year's Day for murder. Jeezy told MTV News he would never turn his back on his friend.

"I worked with Shawty more so on the album before he went in," said Jeezy, who revealed one song they have on the album called "Let Me Handle My Business." "Like I said, that's my little brother, so it kinda hit close to home [when he was arrested]. I definitely would have wanted homie for this [Trap or Die 2 mixtape], but it was good. We did the work we did and got in for the album."

Young said Shawty not being able to travel with him feels weird.

"It feels a little different, but I got us," the Snowman said. "I had us before; I got him now. He's not able to be here with us through the duration, but he's here with us in spirit. Better believe he's calling every day, like, 'What's going on? How we lookin'?' I'm talking to him or his people. He's good. Shawty is holding his head.

"He's always been a strong little dude," Jeezy added. "He's like my little brother. I kinda raised Shawty. I kinda brought him around that type of mentality. He wasn't a street dude off go. So whatever happened, that's not for me or you to speak on. But as far as him being my little brother, he's always gonna be in my prayers, and I'mma ride with him. He's incredible with what he do. He's like my Dr. Dre. I couldn't do a Thug Motivation album without Shawty Redd. So best believe, know, he's on that album. Real talk."

Drake Premieres First Official Single 'Over'

After a nearly yearlong wait for his fans, Drake's first single from his debut album Thank Me Later is here. The song, "Over," deals with Drake coming to grips with fame. And just like Drizzy chose to stay with his home team, Young Money, when signing his record deal, he also chose to debut his first official record in his hometown, on Toronto radio station 93.5 the Flow. The song is also available for download on Drake's Web site.

"Bottles on me, long as someone drink it," the 23-year-old raps in a slow, aggressive flow. "Never drop the ball, f--- is y'all thinking?/ Making sure the Young Money ship is never sinking/ 'Bout to set it off in this bi---, Jada Pinkett/ You too fine to be laying down in bed alone/ I can teach you how to speak my language, Rosetta Stone."

The track was produced by Boi-1da and has an energetic feel.

" 'Bout to go Thriller, Mike Jackson on these n---as," Drake later raps. "All I need is a f---ing red jacket with some zippers."

Even with anticipation for the record through the roof, Drake said he's keeping everything in perspective.

"This is my first song," he told radio-show hosts Jus Red and Jwyze. "This is still my first single off my first album. This is still the beginning, as great as everything has gone."

"I know way too many people here right now that I didn't know last year," Drake sings on the hook. "Who the f--- are y'all?/ I swear it feels like the last few nights we been everywhere and back/ But I just can't remember it all/ What am I doing? What am I doing?/ Oh yeah, that's right/ I'm doing me, I'm doing me/ I'm living life right now, man, and this what I'mma do till it's over/ Till it's over/ But it's far from over."

"I went with 'Over' as the first look because of the words in the hook," he said. "The hook being the most repetitive part. I got a lot of great songs on my album. I got songs for women who wanna feel special. I got songs for dudes — if you ever thought my music was too soft, this is one you will enjoy. I got a lot of variety on there, but the biggest thing was that opening line on the hook: 'I know way too many people here right now that I didn't know last year.'

"I've just gone so many places in a short amount of time," he added. "This record sums up where I am right now in my career. I think it's a great first impression. The album is going to be a great body of work for you to get lost in. Right now I just wanna have some fun. When we're out partying, I want people to have some fun too, because this is the one."

The video for "Over" is scheduled to be filmed soon in Los Angeles.

'RING RING it's coming little monsters,' Gaga tweeted on Thursday about the premiere of 'Telephone' video with Beyonce.

Lady Gaga took to her Twitter account on Thursday (March 4) to tease her fans about the forthcoming release of her hotly anticipated "Telephone" music video with Beyoncé. Although there have been many rumors about exactly when the video might premiere, Gaga simply said it's on its way. She tweeted earlier this week that the clip was still being edited and she wants it to be "perfect."

She tweeted "RING RING its coming little monsters" along with a link to a photo of her in a prison-like room, wearing nothing more than crime-scene tape placed in all the right places and some deep-red lipstick.

She also tweeted the good news about the song itself, which is Gaga's latest #1 hit. "LITTLE MONSTERS!! Today is an exciting day. Telephone become our SIXTH NUMBER 1 RECORD IN A ROW IN AMERICA! I love you so much! Celebrate!"

The photo's prison setting would work with the rumored story line for the video. Reportedly Beyoncé, who is featured on the track, breaks Gaga out of prison for what is expected to be a Tarantino-inspired clip that even features the truck that Uma Thurman's Bride drove in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill."

While fellow video co-stars Semi Precious Weapons have described the chemistry between Beyoncé and Gaga as "magical"; B herself said the ladies got "crazy" on the California set of the Jonas Åkerlund-directed clip.

Gaga, who appears in the video in a number of characteristic get-ups (including phones on her head), shared that the video picks up where "Paparazzi" left off. "What I like about it is it's a real true pop event," she said. "And when I was younger, I was always excited when there was a big giant event happening in pop music and that's what I wanted this to be."

Are you excited for the "Telephone" video? What do you think the photo is all about? Let us know in the comments below!

T.I. To Finish Prison Sentence This Month

Posted: 03 Mar 2010 11:25 PM PST

Rapper is set to be released March 26.
By Jayson Rodriguez

March is shaping up to be a big month for T.I.

The rapper announced new single "I'm Back" through a promotional Twitter account, and his lawyer confirmed to MTV News on Thursday (March 4) that Tip will be released from prison later this month. Federal Bureau of Prison records list the rapper's release date as March 26.

"That date is correct," lawyer Steve Sadow said via e-mail. "T.I. is now serving the remainder of his sentence in home confinement under the supervision of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons."

The rapper is in a halfway house, where he was transferred in late December. Upon his release from Dismas Charities Atlanta West later this month, he's still expected to complete anywhere from 20 to 60 additional days of home confinement, stemming from an arrangement he made with prosecutors before his prison stint began.

Originally, the rapper reached a deal that required him to complete 1,500 hours of community service, 1,000 of which had to be finished in a year before he would be formally sentenced. In return, the rapper secured a reduced jail sentence of one year and one day in prison. The length was significant, legal experts noted, because it allowed the rapper the chance for an early release; had he been sentenced to exactly one year, his options would have been less flexible.

Through a series of speeches to troubled youths, the rapper recorded well over 1,000 hours, though he still needs to complete the remaining time after his release to reach the full 1,500. Per his sentencing guidelines, T.I. also must submit to drug counseling and financial audits and maintain a curfew through the remaining home-confinement period.

After that, the rapper will be free to resume his normal schedule, which will presumably include finishing a new album. In total, the rapper — who began his sentence in May — will have served 10 months of a 366-day sentence.

Lil Wayne Parties In NYC, Records In Miami Before His Sentencing

Lil Wayne headed back to Miami on Wednesday after an eventful few days in New York.

Weezy was supposed to be sentenced on weapons charges Tuesday afternoon, but after a basement fire at the Manhattan Criminal Court building, his court date was delayed. On Tuesday night, instead of spending time in his hotel room watching pay-per-view, Wayne made his way to Madison Square Garden, performing with Young Jeezy, Nicki Minaj and Drake during Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Tour.

After the show, Weezy hit the studio before going out to party. New York Daily News reporters say they spotted him at the club 1Oak with his Young Money family and Trey Songz.

On Wednesday night in Miami, Wayne was back in the studio until about 2:30 a.m. DJ Scoob Doo posted a TwitPic of Wayne, apparently in his Bugatti, driving by the studio. "@liltunechi & Bugatti Reunite 4 studio 2:30am," Scoob tweeted.

Scoob, who has been traveling with Wayne and shooting footage for the latest installment of their DVD series "The Nino Brown Story," also posted a TwitPic of one of Wayne's Grammy Awards. "@liltunechi & @djscoobdoo nino brown 3 on way," Scoob wrote. "Carter 4 on repeat on Jet. I'll give it several of these."

"The Nino Brown Story, Part 3" is coming soon; pick it up on Scoob's Web site.

Wayne's video with Eminem for "Drop the World" will be premiering soon. Weezy also is featured in the brand-new video from one of the mothers of his children, Nivea; Wayne has a guest-starring role in the singer's "Love Hurts" video. We don't actually see his face until the very end of the video, but he is very recognizable as things get steamy between him and Nivea. She eventually moves out of their house in the video, however.

Lil Wayne is now scheduled to be sentenced Monday in New York.

B.o.B Says Breakthrough Single 'Nothin' On You' Is 'Sincere'

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 04:52 AM PST

'The biggest lesson I learned is patience,' Atlanta MC says.
By Jayson Rodriguez

B.o.B
Photo: MTV News

Upstart Atlanta MC B.o.B, a.k.a. Bobby Ray, isn't your average rapper by any means. First of all, he plays the guitar — and while Kanye West, Drake and Lil Wayne have tried their hands at shredding, none of them can spin a wayward, folksy tune like he can. Combine that with co-signs from Eminem and T.I., who signed the Mixtape Daily Fire starter alum to his Grand Hustle roster, and you have the makings of a breakout star.

So how, exactly, does Bobby Ray plan on introducing his soulful Southern lyricism? With his new single, "Nothin' On You," a sprightly, musical number from his forthcoming debut, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray.

"Introducing B.o.B or Bobby Ray — it takes more than one song to do it," the rapper told MTV News from the red carpet of BET's "Rip the Runway." "But I feel like this song is really genuine and really sincere, so I feel good about people finding out about me through 'Nothin' On You.' "

The song, featuring Bruno Mars, currently rests at #37 on the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B chart. Although "Nothin' On You" is still picking up steam, it's already received praise — the program director at Los Angeles' KIIS-FM told Entertainment Weekly that B.o.B would be the next big thing on radio.

Bruno who, along with Phillip Lawrence from production team the Smeezingtons, helmed the track, gushed over Bobby Ray's talent. "It's great — he's an incredible artist," the singer said. "We actually wrote and sung on the hook. We'd been fans of his for a minute and he came in and just murdered those verses. Hopefully the rest is gonna be history."

The rapper has been signed to Atlantic Records for some time now and graced the pages of 2009's XXL Freshman 10 issue, with fellow rookies Kid Cudi, Asher Roth and Wale, among others.

Waiting on the bench wasn't without its challenges. At one point B.o.B threatened to pull the plug on his promising career before it even started, though he later backtracked and said the rumors were exaggerated. "It does get frustrating, trying to be as free as possible but at the same time working with people," the rapper told MTV News last year.

But with a new mixtape — the DJ Drama-hosted May 25th — in the streets and a release date on deck for his debut, April 27, Bobby Ray said he learned the value of patience.

"I will tell you this about the journey as an artist to get to the point where you actually have a release date," he offered. "The biggest lesson I learned is patience. Once you get here it's like, OK, now you have to keep going. You never get to an end. So you have to be patient and pace yourself. Take time. It's like building a house. You gotta take time, build a foundation, get the walls right, get the electricity right, get the plumbing right and make sure when you turn the light on that the door don't open up."

'I just came from the White House,' Jay tells crowd at his show in D.C. Wednesday.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Jay-Z took advantage of his time in the Beltway on Wednesday to visit 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. "I just came from the White House," he told the audience at the Verizon Center on the Washington, D.C., stop of his Blueprint 3 tour. According to The Washington Post, Hov made the remark during the last minutes of his concert.

Officials confirmed to the Post on Thursday (March 4) that President Barack Obama had indeed met with the Brooklyn MC and the pair chatted briefly. In an interview overseas last month, Jay-Z revealed that when he once called President Obama, he heard BP3 playing in the background.

He also told British talk-show host Jonathan Ross he had been invited to the White House by the Obama administration "a couple of times," but at the time, the witty lyricist hadn't had a chance to take the president up on the offer. "Hopefully we'll keep him in for eight years, so I'll have time to get there," Jay joked.

The Roc Nation boss was an avid supporter of Obama during the presidential campaign. He also referred to him in a series of lyrics, most notably for Young Jeezy's hit "My President," to which Jay-Z contributed a verse on the remix that premiered during a party that coincided with the president's inauguration.

"Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther could walk/ Martin Luther walked so Barack Obama could run/ Barack Obama ran so all the children could fly," he raps on the track. "So I'mma spread my wings/ You could meet me in the sky."

"It's just the progression. ... You sat, you walked, you ran, you ran to fly," he said about his Obama rhyme last year on the eve of the inauguration. "You know, just the progression and how far we've come as a nation. It feels good to say that, 'cause I never had that type of feeling to say 'as a nation,' like I was part of the American dream. And I believe a lot of people didn't feel like a part of the American process for so long."
