While MTV News has been following Justin Bieber all around Manhattan as he promotes his new album, My World 2.0, earlier this year, his life was being documented by a camera crew for a new special about him, airing this weekend. On Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET, fans can get a behind-the-scenes look at what it's like to be the teen idol in MTV's "The Diary of Justin Bieber."

In one clip from the special, Bieber is lying on his back with his backup singers all around him doing vocal exercises by singing the phrase "I know" over and over again. In another clip, Bieber, his backup singers and Sean Kingston groove and practice their track "Eenie Meenie" before Bieber sings his part all on his own.

In other clips from the show, Bieber is seen on a promotional tour for the album performing for various crowds and even playing a little basketball during his downtime. When asked how he finds inspiration for his love songs, he tells a reporter that anyone can find and experience love at any time.

"It's weird when people say, 'You're only 15,' because I know I am only 15, but at the same time I think at any age you can experience love," he said. "Whether you're 80 or 5, you're always gonna ... I don't know. There's a difference between love and being in love, because you can love someone but not necessarily be in love. So I think I've loved girls, but I don't know — I haven't been in love before."

Are you excited for Justin's "Diary"? Let us know in the comments!

MTV News will be rolling out previews from "The Diary of Justin Bieber" all week — don't miss the full show, airing on MTV Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET!

'American Idol' Top 11: Crystal Bowersox, Aaron Kelly Find Hits On #1 Night

Katie Stevens gains confidence with help from Miley Cyrus.
By Sabrina Rojas Weiss

With Tuesday night's (March 23) broad theme of #1 Billboard hits to choose from, "American Idol" contestants had the opportunity to choose the perfect vehicles to establish themselves as artists worthy of making the top 10 — and the lucrative Idols Live! summer tour. But several stumbled anyway, leaving the judges baffled by their wrong or too-easy song choices. Only Crystal Bowersox, Aaron Kelly and Katie Stevens earned praise across the board.

As this week's mentor, Miley Cyrus offered some generic praise and suggestions for the contestants to push themselves a little more. But she did offer some valuable support and advice to a handful of hopefuls.

First up was Lee Dewyze, with "The Letter" by the Box Tops (the group with which the late Alex Chilton, who died last week, got his start as a teenager). Miley said she tried to help Lee with his stage presence, and he did have a more relaxed posture as he grooved to a bluesy, upbeat version of the song. Ellen DeGeneres and Randy Jackson loved it, and Kara DioGuardi observed that he was "finally owning the stage." But Simon Cowell disapproved of the "quite corny" song choice and arrangement.

Paige Miles had been worried about her super-high strappy heels, but from the first notes of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds," it was clear she had bigger problems. Randy bluntly called her out-of-tune performance "honestly terrible." Ellen didn't even want to comment on the music, but Kara and Simon thought it seemed like Paige had stopped competing weeks ago.

Not suffering from a lack of confidence was Tim Urban, who seemed to embrace his teen-heartthrob image with Queen's '50s-retro tune "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." While moving into the audience, pointing at the fans and sliding across the stage, Tim actually managed to stay in tune. But his efforts earned him the label of "bad karaoke" from Randy, a comparison to a "High School Musical" audition from Ellen, and another Zac Efron reference from Kara. (It was fitting, since "Hairspray" director Adam Shankman was in the audience next to Miley.) Then Simon ripped into Tim for giving yet another "silly" performance.

Aaron Kelly managed to get over the triple obstacles of a crush on Miley, laryngitis and tonsillitis to deliver a solid rendition of Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." Ellen and Kara praised his song choice; Randy blamed a few bad notes on the laryngitis; and though Simon thought it was "old-fashioned," he admitted that there was zero chance Aaron would be going home this week.

Odds were pretty good that Crystal Bowersox would do a Janis Joplin song at some point in the season. But the dreadlocked singer's rocking gospel take on "Me and Bobby McGee" (a version that Simon noted was very similar to Pink's cover) was the night's highlight. After dishing out grumpy critiques all night, Randy declared, "I'm so happy now," after Crystal sang. Though Ellen and Kara urged Crystal to connect more with her audience in the future, Simon disagreed, saying, "I wouldn't change anything."

Michael Lynche rehearsed "When a Man Loves a Woman" staring straight into Miley's eyes, making the 17-year-old confess, "I'm falling in love with you." His soulful take on the song was without noticeable flaws, but Ellen called it "safe" and Kara pointed out that he got too "lounge-y and overindulgent." Simon repeated what he told several other contestants and wished that Big Mike had done a more contemporary arrangement.

Miley's advice to Andrew Garcia to put down his guitar for "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" seemed like a good idea. But it just led to a lot of awkwardly emphatic hand gestures during his pitchy rendition of the song, and Kara said he looked like a puppet onstage. Inevitably, the judges brought up his "Straight Up" performance, and Simon wondered if "maybe we overrated that moment."

Katie Stevens seemed to gather strength and confidence from her conversation with Miley about how to react to criticism. She also took the judges' advice and picked a more current song, Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry." Though her rendition sounded more adult-contemporary than teen pop, the judges praised her choice. "This is the lane for you," Kara said.

Casey James did a dead-on Huey Lewis impression for "The Power of Love," hardly changing a note from the '80s tune. While Randy, Ellen and Kara loved it, Simon called him out for being too identical to the original.

Didi Benami tried to show her range with Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good," and she said talking to Miley about stage fright helped her. But her sultry, forceful delivery didn't do much for the judges. "It felt like you were playing a character," Kara said, and Simon agreed that it didn't sound like Didi was being herself.

Siobhan Magnus closed the show with Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," with her trendy outfit and flashy fauxhawk belying a very faithful rendition of the original. She, of course, screamed out a climactic high note at the end, earning praise from Randy, Ellen and Kara. Simon thought the performance would divide fans, however. He ended the night with a warning for Siobhan and all the other contestants that they'd need to start pushing themselves a little harder in the coming weeks.

Nicki Minaj Lobbies For A Part In 'Nightmare On Elm Street' Remake

Celebrity Favorites: Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj has an affinity for a certain silver-screen serial killer. On Ludacris' "My Chick Bad," Minaj big-ups Mr. Freddy Krueger himself.

"Tuck yourself in, you better hold on to ya teddy," she raps. "It's 'Nightmare on Elm Street,' and guess who's playing Freddy?"

Before that, on the unofficial remix of Beyoncé's "Sweet Dreams," she name-drops the dream thief again. "Yo, Young Money right here/ Bike here, throw it up, no high chair/ Cold like a white bear/ Freddy Krueger, I'm a rap bi--- nightmare."

On the set of her "Massive Attack" video, we asked Nick if she was anticipating the upcoming remake of the popular 1980s horror film. The Jamaica Queens native said she just found out about it, but she should have had a role in the movie.

"I didn't even know they were doing it," Nicki said with her sunny smile. "They should have cast me. Like a freaking crazy lunatic running crazy down in a wig and the Freddy glove with pink fingernails on it? They missed the mark."

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Independent Album: Land of Make Believe

Headliners: Kidz in the Hall

Key Collaborations: "Jukebox" (featuring MC Lyte), "Fresh Academy" (featuring Donnis and Chip the Ripper) and "Will II Win" (featuring Marsha Ambrosius)

Essential Info: Naledge and Double-O dropped their latest LP earlier this month, and in between their always busy recording schedule, the duo dropped jewels on us about what some of the songs mean to them.

"This was a song that we did early on in the recording process," Double-O said about "Running." "We were going through internal issues and dealing with a lot of B.S. So this song really represents the frustration with everything. I made sure Naledge spit it with a certain energy, and then I distorted his vocals to really get the point across. We used some vocal effects on other songs on the album, but I left them all off on the bridge so you really get the raw emotion we were feeling."

Double-O was partial to "Out to Lunch" featuring the Kid Daytona. "This record was meant to be for the hip-hop heads who really enjoy lyrics and minimal beats," Double said. "Me and Daytona used this song as our ode to the Native Tongues era. We totally went for that fly, fashionista and abstract feel on this record. It's the perfect cipher beat."

O gets more personal later on in the album. "This record was essentially my version of 'Cleanin' Out My Closet,' " he said, comparing "Do It All Again" to Eminem's 2002 hit. "I often have gotten criticism for not being interesting enough or getting personal on our records. This record is one of many moments on this album I lay my inner me on the table."

Other Heat This Week

» Jay Rock - From Hood Tales to the Cover of XXL
» Tony Yayo - Gun Powder Guru 2: The Remixes

NEW YORK — Not only can Justin Bieber celebrate the release of his sophomore album My World 2.0, but he also rose to victory against Nick Cannon at his bowling-themed release party at Lucky Strike Lanes in Manhattan. It's made even sweeter since Cannon seemed pretty sure he was going to beat Bieber at his own game.

Only minutes before he stepped inside to compete against Bieber, he spoke to MTV News about his plans to kick his butt at the game. "I'm going to! I'm about to show Justin that he has no skills," he said. "He can't bowl. We privately had this conversation and he said that his game is only decent. My game is ill. I'm next-level — I'm like the Tiger Woods of bowling, but without all the drama."

And while Bieber is seen bowling in his music video for his single "Baby," Cannon had been hitting the lanes to train for his bout against Bieber. "Practicing and everything," he shared. "Justin's gonna get it. I got the bowling attire. I'm ready to bowl."

But as it turned out, Cannon was all talk and was taken down by Bieber and lost to him in their big match. Despite losing to him, does Cannon have a case of Bieber fever? "Kind of. I feel it coming on. That kid is definitely busy ... he's got a lot of hot stuff going on. He's about to take over the world. We're gonna see him live and in person [tonight]."

Miley Cyrus Dishes Out Advice On 'American Idol'

Posted: 23 Mar 2010 07:31 AM PDT

Disney superstar has kind words (and words of warning) for the top 11.
By Katie Byrne

While previous "American Idol" mentors have included Barry Manilow, Randy Travis and Diana Ross, the show took things a bit younger this week with Miley Cyrus coaching the top 11 contestants. The theme of the week was #1 hits, and, as Ryan Seacrest pointed out at the top of the show, "This pop princess may only be 17, but she has a lifetime of experience."

When Seacrest caught up with Cyrus in the audience, she admitted that she was worried about critiquing the singers because, "I'm a fan of theirs." But she didn't hold back, offering just as much praise as constructive criticism.

With Lee Dewyze, Miley took the season's lone rocker to task for his lack of charisma onstage. "Lee, I think, has an amazing voice," Cyrus said. "The only thing that is lacking sometimes is his stage presence." She also called out his straightforward arrangement of the Box Tops' "The Letter." "Give them a few notes they wouldn't expect from you," she suggested.

Cyrus had Paige Miles' number from the start, warning: "I think as long as she watches her pitch, she'll be great." We all know how that turned out, but Miley also had some kind words for the smiley singer. "Your voice is just as powerful when you sing really soft as when you belt it out," Cyrus said.

Tim Urban's Bieber hairstyle must have cast a spell on Miley, because she was putty in his hands. "I would give you two thumbs up," she told him after a run-through of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." "I think you rock." She also answered the judges' concerns about Urban being boring. "It's not the personality he's lacking," she said. "It's just adding riffs or switching it up somehow."

Aaron Kelly, who sang Miley's "The Climb" during his audition, got a thumbs-up from the singer herself on his version. When he started singing Aerosmith's "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing," Cyrus' jaw dropped, which she later explained: "I made a face because I didn't realize how good he was."

Miley immediately praised Crystal Bowersox's "different" take on Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee." She did encourage the front-runner to take a few more risks at the end of the song. "There were some times when she hit those high notes that it sounded gospel," Cyrus said.

After Michael Lynche maintained eye contact with Miley the entire time he crooned "When a Man Loves a Woman," the pop star "had nothing bad to say" about the big teddy bear. "He sang that song to me the entire way," she marveled. "I couldn't do that. It's very nerve-racking to stare at someone and sing."

Andrew Garcia took some risky advice from Miley, agreeing to set his guitar aside so the performance wouldn't be so "stiff." "I feel like you could do it just singing and working the crowd. I think the chicks would dig it," she laughed. After he flubbed the lyrics to Marvin Gaye's "Heard It Through the Grapevine," Cyrus had one last piece of advice: "Learn your words!"

Miley met up with fellow 17-year-old Katie Stevens and urged her to "remember who you are as a musician and why you love music." She also had three words for Katie as she tackled Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" on the "Idol" stage: "Edge it up."

Cyrus was big on eye contact during her mentoring stint, and she repeated that advice to Casey James, relaying how important it is to her fans when she looks them in the eyes. "When I'm onstage, I always try to make eye contact with the people in the first few rows," she said. "If he does that and brings personality to it, I think he'll do great."

Didi Benami took advantage of her time with Cyrus by asking about stage fright. "Anyone that tells you that they're not nervous at all, you've got to be a little nervous," she said. "That's what drives you." But you just can't let the nerves "take over," Miley told Didi. As for the singing, Cyrus praised Benami's vibrato. "I think this is a really good song for her, because she can really showcase that," she said.

Miley admitted right off the bat that she was a Siobhan Magnus fan. "Siobhan stuck out for me," she said. "She's just got something very interesting about her." But Magnus was really excited by one of Miley's compliments: "Your voice has such a swagger to it."

How do you think Miley did as a mentor? Are you excited to see her perform on "American Idol" on Wednesday night? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Bieber certainly has a devoted fanbase: In an amazingly short amount of time, they've taken him from Internet sensation to a household name. And during a week that sees a flurry of Bieber activity — his My World 2.0 came out today (March 23), he appeared twice on "The View" this week, he's performing at the Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday and "The Diary of Justin Bieber" airs on MTV Sunday at 7:30 p.m. — MTV News asked his fans to share a few other reasons why they love him.

"He has a great personality. He came from Canada and he connects with his fans a lot," Amanda Pine shared with MTV News. "And he tries really hard to see everyone."

While the fans certainly love his music, they were quick to weigh in on the 16-year-old pop star's looks. Another fan, Danielle Cerroni, said, "His voice, his hair, his smile, his eyes and everything else."

Like Cerroni, Stephanie DaSilva says there's not much she doesn't love about the 16-year-old pop star. "That's not even a question. It's everything!" she gushed. "I like his hair. I like his eyes. I love his lips. Nice butt!"

"How can you not [love him]?" Brooke Bonstead said. "He's just amazing. I mean, come on, everyone has Bieber fever. He's a teenage boy. All teenage girls like him and he can relate to all teenage people."

Rachel Bower admitted that while he relates to teens, he's not normal teen. "[I like him] a lot — like an infinite amount," she said. "I just think he's really talented and he's really mature for his age. He's not an ordinary teeny-bopper performer."

Ludacris is riding high off the success of his seventh album, Battle of the Sexes, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. The concept album, however, is just one in a slate of projects he's readying for release this year.

"Details are sketchy, but [my next album], it's called Ludaversal," he told HoneyMag.com for the cover of their March issue. "You'll probably have it at the end of 2010 or somewhere at the beginning of 2011."

Luda and his Disturbing Tha Peace contingent are celebrating their 10-year anniversary this year, and he told MTV News recently that the benchmark has recharged him. In 2000, he broke on the scene powered by "What's Your Fantasy?" the breakout hit from his major-label debut, Back For the First Time.

"To me, marking 10 years in the game, it feels like we're starting all over again," he said. "I'm just as hungry as the first day."

A lot has changed for the rapper since his days as an Atlanta radio jock. In addition to rapping and acting, he also wears the CEO hat for his Disturbing Tha Peace label, distributed by Def Jam. He said recent signee and former Lil Jon protégé Lil Scrappy should be one of the next DTP crew members to put out a project.

"We got Lil Scrappy about to drop something soon, we got Playaz Circle, of course, we got Lil Fate, I-20, and we're working on a lot of new artists that we're gonna unleash on the industry very soon," he said. "So we got some things in the works. Look for some stuff."

With only days left until T.I. is released from an Atlanta halfway house back to his own home, the Grand Hustle MC is making his musical return known.

First, Tip premiered "I'm Back" earlier this month on his Web site and announced plans for a new album to be released August 24. Now, the Grammy-winning rapper joins Jamie Foxx and Justin Timberlake on a song called "Winner."

The track, expected to land on Foxx's next album, was leaked last year featuring just the two singers. A new version, however, which premiered on Power 105 jock DJ Envy's New York radio show Tuesday afternoon (March 23), features a guest verse from T.I.

"I'm the fresher, go ask whoever that," Tip raps. "King back, money long as an old Cadillac."

The rapper was sentenced to one year and one day in prison last March after striking a plea deal with prosecutors stemming from October 2007 gun charges.

In December, T.I. was transferred from prison to a halfway house to serve out the rest of his term, where he was allowed to travel to the studio to work on music and he made a few public appearances, most notably at a charity function organized by his fiancée, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle.

T.I. hasn't spoken to the media since he turned himself in, but he issued a brief statement to DJs during a conference call after "I'm Back" debuted. The rapper graciously thanked the group for their support but did not take any questions afterward.

"I appreciate the support and how hard I was going in during the brief hiatus," he said. "The support don't go unnoticed, and I don't take it lightly. This marks a special day for us, because we putting out the first song off the album — not an official first single, just something to keep the streets warm. It's properly entitled 'I'm Back.' It's a lot of things that needed to be spoken on. In my absence, it was a lot of things that went down, a lot of matters that needed to be addressed. This was the greatest platform for me to do it. It was the first song I did when I came home. You get me fresh out the box going in. I'm sure you guys will enjoy it."

M.I.A.'s New Album Is 'Weird' And 'Heavy,' Says Diplo

Producer thinks Kala follow-up could come out in July.
By James Montgomery

On Monday, blogs began noticing M.I.A.'s growing slate of summer festival gigs, which seemed to lend credence to earlier reports that she'd be releasing the follow-up to her Kala album in the coming months.

And according to producer Diplo, who worked on the album, that's very much the case. Though it's looking more like the record will see the light of day in July, rather than June as had been speculated. But that's not all he told MTV News when we caught up with him last weekend in Austin at South by Southwest.

"[The album] is cool. I think that she's just wrapping up the mixing and stuff. I was in New York on Thursday, before I came here, I was mixing down the last single for it," Dip explained. "It's a record I did for her that's sort of ... you can't even [explain] what it would sound like. It's sort of like an Animal Collective/ gospel/ giant-drum record. And she's singing on it. I think you might expect some rap/club music, but nothing on there. It's more of a heavy record. All kinds of different sounds. We did, like, a punk thing. ... It's weird."

That assessment seems to be in line with what M.I.A. told British mag NME earlier this year, saying that her new album is "really odd" and "more musical" and features "no gimmicks." And according to Diplo, those ambitions have made for a very interesting collection of songs.

"It's definitely more 'vibe-y,' I think. We'll see if people like it," he smiled. "My job is to kind of pull it together and make something of it."

Diplo singled out the track he had just finished mixing — a song called "Tell Me Why" — as a favorite, and said that the still-untitled album is very much an ambitious, deeply personal effort for M.I.A.

" 'Tell Me Why' is great," he said. "It's a big, kinda giant-sounding record. ... It sounds like some Wall of Sound, Motown kind of thing. It's just me and Switch producing the album, and Blaqstarr did a couple of tracks, too. There are no surprise producers. No guest stars. It's just her on it. She's got a good attitude about it. She's excited for people to hear it."

Justin Bieber's 'Biggest Fan' Shares Her Excitement Over My World 2.0

'It is absolutely amazing! You can tell he has grown up so much,' Tricia Maltibag says of Bieber's new album.

Last September, Tricia Maltibag was named the winner of Justin Bieber's VMA red-carpet shout-out competition. MTV News spoke to her after her win and she expressed her excitement over being recognized by the pop star for her devotion to him. Since then he has released two albums, including My World 2.0, in stores Tuesday (March 23). Maltibag said she can't believe how much Bieber's popularity has grown since that fateful day last fall.

"Since the VMAs Justin has gotten extremely big!" she gushed in an e-mail to MTV News. "Bieber fever has definitely spread and I couldn't be prouder of him! I remember when the first magazines with his tiny little picture came out and I bought doubles of each. Now, his face is on ALL of them!"

So, has Maltibag given up on the pop star now that everyone else in the world loves him too? Actually, it's quite the opposite. "As for me, I'm still pretty much his biggest fan, though some might disagree — but my room looks like Bieber fever has exploded all over the walls. You should see it! My friends are pretty shocked when they come in and I still can't stop talking about him, and a quarter of my wardrobe is Bieber attire," she explained about her devotion to her fellow Canadian. "A bit after the VMAs me and my friend drove down to Montreal and waited in line 12 hours to meet him, but it was worth it because we were the first of, like, 1,000 people."

And she obviously loves Bieber's new album. "And, yes, My World 2.0 is out today! I only bought, like, eight copies of his album last time but I'm aiming for the golden ticket so this time I'll need more," she shared. "It is absolutely amazing! You can tell he has grown up so much!

"I always knew he would make it big — I just didn't know it would be this fast. I'm so proud, but I still miss the days when he was a small-town boy who did notice girls like me," she continued. "But I support him 110 percent and I'm so glad that his name is finally really out there, so he can finally share his talent with the world, as corny as that sounds. It's been a while, but I still remember the day of the VMAs very clearly."

Are you as excited as Tricia is about My World 2.0? Let us know in the comments!
