Top 10 women are hit and miss, with Lilly Scott and Katelyn Epperly also scoring praise from the judges.

"American Idol" needed a shakeup, and on Wednesday night (March 3), Crystal Bowersox provided just the kick season nine has been missing. The Ohio native spent Tuesday night in the hospital, forcing a last-minute switch that had the guys performing a night early.

Though we didn't find out what led to Bowersox's hospitalization, host Ryan Seacrest addressed the issue right off the bat on Wednesday's show, asking the dreadlocked singer how she was feeling just hours after it was revealed on his radio show that she would be sent home if she couldn't perform. "I feel good," she said, looking more glammed up in a purple top draped with a fishnet peekaboo sweater and big silver earrings. "I'm a tough cookie. ... Let's do this."

Luckily for her, she was first up, revealing to America that she has a kind of "square" twin brother, Carl, and that she carries around a butterfly-bedecked trinket bag. After some harsh comments for her Alanis Morissette cover last week, Bowersox went with Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Long as I Can See the Light," slapping a gospel spin on the classic-rock tune.

Showing no signs of illness, she took it to church, coming off like an indie-rock Janis Joplin over a Hammond organ and her gently strummed acoustic guitar. Whatever was ailing her didn't show onstage, as Bowersox powerfully nailed the vocals, looking confident and strong.

Simon praised her for not playing the sympathy card, admitting in a George Bush-ian way that he "misunderestimated" her talents based on last week, calling her vocal "incredible" and comparing the performance to the first time the panel realized they had a star on their hands with Kelly Clarkson. "You are the truth. You do what you do," Randy Jackson told her, praising Bowersox for keeping it real. Ellen DeGeneres called her gift "pure, raw, natural talent" and Kara DioGuardi said the Americana rock vibe was the right one for her and it took her to new heights on the show.

Country wannabe Haeley Vaughn had some ground to make up after last week's Beatles stumble, and the 16-year-old headband artist tried to do it with Miley Cyrus' "The Climb," slipping into a more comfortable groove with the country ballad. The vocals were still a bit shaky at points and her lisp was sometimes distracting, prompting Randy to deem it a pitchy disaster and say that he felt she had no connection to the song by a fellow teen. Kara added that the 16-year-old could use another year of working on her voice, and Simon said it was just a "complete and utter mess. ... There's a certain irony about you singing a song about climbing when you actually fell off."

Antique refurbisher Lacey Brown, 24, got buried by Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" last week, so she went with Kara's advice and sang Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me." Unfortunately for her, while the song was more in her wheelhouse, the vocals were mostly uneven, and Randy said it was the right song choice but sounded like a karaoke performance with nothing added to it. Cowell called it "marginally better" than last week, faulting her for not being memorable enough.

Another singer who needed some redemption was Katie Stevens, 17, who revealed she can say "give me a kiss" in six languages but who got the kiss-off last week with a musty Michael Bublé cover. This time, she chose Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On," doing an admirable, if somewhat forgettable, cover in which her vocals went from chesty growl to thin falsetto.

Ellen praised her voice but said it still felt a bit old. "I don't want to hear something I would hear in my dentist's office," DeGeneres told her. For Kara and Randy, the vocals needed to be more controlled and focused, but Simon was brutally honest, saying she needed more experience and had to figure out what kind of recording artist she wants to be.

Former middle school mascot-turned-cheerleader Didi Benami took a turn from her singer/songwriter soft spot to a soul space with Bill Withers' classic "Lean on Me," which she tried to imbue with some gospel grit courtesy of wild gesticulation, foot stomping and high, reedy notes.

It was no good for Randy, who felt it pointed out her imperfections rather than highlighting her strengths, and while Ellen loves her voice, presence and smile, it was not the right Withers choice in her mind. "It wasn't good, it really wasn't good," said Kara, who urged her to stay in the singer/songwriter lane and go for consistency.

Another singer who needed to prove something, children's choir director Michelle Delamor, tried to break out of her R&B cage with Creed's "With Arms Wide Open." She turned the turgid rock song into a breathy soul ballad that felt and sounded like a big gamble, thanks to a fistful of bum notes.

Randy loved her cute outfit and felt she had a great opportunity to switch it up but didn't do enough with the tune. Ellen thought it almost worked, forgetting for a minute that it was a rock song, while Kara said it was her favorite Delamor performance so far and that it was a risk that didn't always work vocally but was believable. Cowell agreed with Kara, giving her props for choosing an unusual song and doing her best to make it her own.

One of the singers who needed to work on her stagecraft was multi-instrumentalist Lilly Scott, who got props for her indie Beatles cover last week. So she tried it again, strapping on a 12-string guitar for Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." Her unique, quavering voice gave the song a modern edge and her folky redo showed some strong artistic chops.

What Randy loves about Scott is her individuality, and he liked how she nailed a very tough song. "I don't know what 'it' is, but you've got 'it,' " Ellen said. Kara agreed that it was the best performance of the night and that Scott had her moment. "You are gonna change the game," she promised, heaping praise for not trying to fit into a cookie-cutter style.

Rocking some giant doorknocker earrings and a sedate updo, Katelyn Epperly, who has aspirations of opening her own recording studio someday, went music geek with a solo piano version of Coldplay's "The Scientist." Transforming it into a jazzy torch song, Epperly made the tune her own, imbuing it with stirring emotion as she stared sad-eyed into the camera.

"I kind of love you," DioGuardi said. "You have an incredible instrument and you can do a lot of things with it, and that's your biggest problem." She counseled Epperly to stop jumping around from style to style each week and focus on figuring out who she is. Cowell called it a smart, contemporary song choice and advised her to be less corny. Ellen had her first Paula moment, praising Epperly's guitar work before correcting herself and saying the arrangement was just too snoozy and slow.

Paige Miles, 24, an avid crayon enthusiast who Simon said has the best voice of all the girls, curried some more favor with the judges by singing Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away," a song co-written by Kara. The staccato R&B take on the tune highlighted Miles' scratchy, seductive vocals and strong, soulful howl.

Ellen loved how Miles changed it up and had fun with the song, even if it was just OK for Randy, who felt the landslide of words didn't allow Miles to show off her vocals enough. Though she liked the version, Kara said Miles' cheerful, smiling take didn't really fit the intent of the lyric that should have been a bit more angsty. "I think you're getting lost in these songs ... it's like the songs are overtaking you," Cowell said, suggesting she was picking the wrong tunes and needs to find one that will mark her as the one to beat.

The primo final spot belonged to former mohawked rocker Siobhan Magnus, 19, who ripped off a big chunk of danger with Aretha Franklin's "Think." Magnus proved she had the pipes to float the big soul classic, even if her stage presence was a bit odd at times and her gigantic power wail near song's end was startling.

"You are so bold and so fearless," Randy said, howling about her unhinged bravery. "It was dope!" Ellen couldn't have agreed more, and Kara was still smiling about the gigantic note, which Magnus said she learned how to hit while singing Clarkson songs in the shower. "You are such a strange person," Simon said as a compliment. "I thought there were parts of that song which were terrible, but that note was incredible."

After another rough week of highs and lows, two men and two women will go home on Thursday night.

Young Jeezy said getting Plies on his new record "Lose My Mind" is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to guest spots on his upcoming LP, Thug Motivation 103.

"I was hoping 'Lose My Mind' was gonna have people on [their toes], because there was no telling what I'm gonna do," Jeezy said. "Let it be known, this album will be special and have some special features on it. I don't wanna let the cat out the bag.

"But June, by the way," he said of the LP's release date. "That's what I'm thinking. If you the boss, you can talk like that. I'm thinking June. I wanna own the summer. If you coming out [with an album] in June, you might wanna think about that, bruh. TM103, I will be there."

Young has had sessions with producers from Kanye West to Swizz Beatz, but he promised that he's going to have one of the guys who helped build the foundation of his sound: Shawty Redd. Redd was arrested on New Year's Day for murder, but the producer's legal problems have not stopped him from working with Young.

"Ah, man. I don't like to give it up," he said when asked to explain one song on the album. "I got this song with Shawty Redd called 'Let Me Handle My Business.' The beat is ... matter of fact, I'm not going to sell it like that. Shawty Redd, Young Jeezy, you know what it is. I'm just going in, basically handling my business. I gotta say what's on my mind. But I'm not here to sell you on no album. Like I said, June, you will be surprised, homie. That's real talk. I been working on this. I been back in the lab. ... I got you."

Jeezy is currently on the road with Jay-Z and Trey Songz for the Blueprint 3 Tour. On Tuesday night, Jeezy stole the show, bringing out Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Drake as surprise guests.

Lil Wayne And Eminem's 'Drop The World': Check Out A Preview!

Smashed TV sets, burning fires and pure chaos mark the proceedings for Lil Wayne's "Drop the World' music video featuring Eminem. An exclusive 30-second clip is available on MTV.com and the video is scheduled to premiere March 11 on MTV.

Director Chris Robinson told MTV News recently that the visuals would be aggressive and feature a heavy amount of technology and in the preview, Robinson's warning is apparent.

Wayne is standing at the crossroads of an abandoned block and as he raps the song's chorus — "I'm gonna pick the world up and drop it on your f---ing head" — while looters run back and forth, smashing items and making sure pandemonium ensues.

Robinson described the shoot as "just energy" and raved about Eminem's entrance.

"You got two guys who are basically huge supernovas coming together, and the way that the song is constructed is great," he said. "Because unless you see it coming, you don't know Eminem is on the track. The first two hooks and the first two verses are all Wayne, and it's kind of a surprise when Eminem comes through, and we matched it visually how Eminem enters the piece. From the concept and to just hearing the lyrics, with both of these amazing lyricists killing it, the whole video is just energy."

In the clip, a comet strikes the sky and seconds later Eminem appears among the debris. Wayne then joins Em as the two pose for cameras.

"It hurts but I'll never show/ 'Cause pain you'll never know/ If only you could see how lonely and how cold/ And frostbit I've become," the Detroit MC kicks off the third verse, singing his flow.

The collaboration is from Wayne's rock-leaning effort Rebirth. Wayne had long sought out Shady to join forces with him on a record. They were both part of the all-star "Forever," also featuring Kanye West and Drake, but fans clamored for just the two superstar lyricists to appear on a song together. However, it wasn't until recently that Eminem was available, after working on his comeback album and battling his drug addiction.

"There hasn't really necessarily been a time for me to go to collaborate and sh-- lately, because I been so locked down in the studio," Eminem said. "But I'm open for whatever. There's a lot of rappers in the game I respect, especially right now."

Lil Wayne, Kanye West Protege Mikkey Halstead Working On First Album

'It's really going to be done the way I want,' he tells Mixtape Daily.

Fire Starter: Mikkey Halsted

You would think that if Kanye West produced your demo with beats he hand-selected for you, you would be good to go. Now if that demo somehow found its way into the hands of Cash Money Records CEO Birdman, you'd definitely be topping the charts in no time. As a teenager, Mikkey Halsted was lucky enough to experience both of those scenarios, although things ended up not working out as planned.

Hailing from Chicago, Halsted was introduced to Kanye by his sister, Miss Criss, another artist West had been working with in 2001. Criss raved to the producer about her brother's lyrical skills but it wasn't until 'Ye overheard Halsted freestyling that he began to really pay attention.

"Just going over to Kanye's mama's house, I used to be just kicking it, freestyling," Halsted explained. "I really wasn't taking hip-hop seriously at that point. I was into trying to make it to the NBA — I was a ballplayer. We got over there freestyling one time and he was like, 'Damn, man, you're really raw for real. Your sister wasn't lying.' He was like, 'Man, take these beats, man, and see what you can do.' "

Halsted came back the next day with three records finished, and the duo worked on a 15-song demo that made it to the executive offices of Cash Money Records.

"This is before Kanye went to the Roc and all that ... got to Cash Money, they heard it. They went crazy. They actually tried to get Kanye and me to sign."

Mikkey and his sister both signed and actually went on tour with the label, and although things did not ultimately work out with Cash Money, he built great relationships — Lil Wayne is still one of his good friends. Weezy shouted out Halsted in the October 2008 issue of XXL saying, "If anybody had me really get on my sh--, [it was] Mikkey." Halsted also learned from the Cash Money work ethic.

"I learned the independent game from them and I saw how they grinded. I took the Cash Money grind and applied it to my own situation and with my work ethic. I saw Wayne [work], and me and Wayne kind of came up together in a way," he said. "All of those things and all of those different people kind of made me who I am today."

After a short stint signed to Jermaine Dupri's So So Def imprint, Halsted found himself independent again — and relishing it. He hooked back up with Kanye's onetime mentor and Grammy-winning producer, No ID, and the two have steadily been putting out mixtapes and releasing songs to the hip-hop blogosphere. They are currently working on an independent album called The Darkroom.

"It's really going to be my first album and it's really going to be done the way I want — the way No ID and I wanted to do it if we didn't have any label interference," Halsted said. "But it's just a good thing. I've been through so many different things in a short period of time, so thank God I started as a teenager so, you know, you feel like you matured now, you ready for everything that's coming."

Nicole Scherzinger Shows Off Her 'Dancing With The Stars' War Wounds

'My feet are so beat up, after just a couple days of rehearsals,' the Pussycat Dolls star tells MTV News.
By Larry Carroll

Earlier this week, Nicole Scherzinger was unveiled as one of the contestants on the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars." Now she's hard at work getting herself into fighting shape — and she has the scabs to show for it.

"Dude, seriously? It's day two, and look at my heel," the Pussycat Dolls star grinned when she stopped by the MTV News studios Wednesday (March 3), pulling off a shoe to reveal a deep, red cut. "It's ugly. Look at that. My feet are so beat up, after just a couple days of rehearsals, and I'm not used to these shoes. Sure, I'm used to wearing 7-inch heels with the Pussycat Dolls, but this is a different style of dancing and a ballroom shoe.

"There's a lot of pain involved," Scherzinger admitted, moments before she'd leave our studio to head back for another rehearsal. "But it's nothing that I'm not used to."

These days, Scherzinger is getting used to a lot of new things, as she and her professional dancing partner begin prepping for season 10 of the hit show. "I have been paired with Mr. Derek Hough, and as soon as I can get some personality in that guy and some charisma, then I think we can go far," she teased. "Derek and I are pretty crazy. We're probably the goofiest cats ever. We were electric from the start.

"The first dance that we've been assigned is the Viennese waltz," Scherzinger revealed. "I just learned how to say that properly — I've been calling it the Vietnamese waltz.

"We've got some really interesting things planned. We want to do things differently, our own way," she said of the style she and Derek are planning to bring to the dance floor. "We've got some surprises that we're planning. There's so much to learn from him, because he's the best. He's an amazing choreographer. He's so innovative."

But after such a long stint with the Dolls, Scherzinger added that there's another "DWTS" element she's eager to embrace: the clothes. "They have very exciting costumes," she beamed. "You know what is so phenomenal about the show? Every week, you see all these beautiful, elaborate costumes and dresses. They make them personally for you and design a new one each week with you for each dance.

"I could come in and be like, 'I want to be Peter Pan this week,' and they'll make me look like the most beautiful Peter Pan," she marveled. "But I don't want to look like Peter Pan. It's amazing. I feel like the costume designers and wardrobe designers have perfected the art form of ballroom-dancing clothes, and I can't wait until they dress me."

Before she left to head back to the dance studio, we had to ask Nicole if she had any fighting words for a list of opponents that includes Pamela Anderson, Kate Gosselin, Shannen Doherty and others. With a smile, she said she wanted to single out one star in particular.

"Hey, Buzz!" she giggled, looking into the camera and calling out 80-year-old astronaut-turned-dancer Buzz Aldrin. "It's on, Buzz!"

The fire that caused Lil Wayne's sentencing to be delayed twice this week has been deemed an accident, according to the New York Daily News.

The smoke was caused by an electrical miscue in the basement of the courthouse, and as a result, the building was evacuated. The Manhattan Criminal Court building was later closed for the afternoon, which resulted in a number of hearings to be postponed, most notably Lil Wayne's. Scaled-down proceedings took place Wednesday (March 3), but an official confirmed to MTV News in the morning that the Cash Money Records lyricist would not be sentenced until Monday.

The courthouse was closed Wednesday as operations moved to a smaller building across the street.

"For losing the biggest courthouse in the state, we're doing pretty well," a spokesman for the Office of Court Administration told the Daily News. "We expected it to be a bit messy, but we're still up and running."

Lil Wayne will now have through the weekend until he faces Judge Charles H. Solomon. The rapper reached a plea deal with prosecutors in November, and as a result, he will serve a one-year prison term. He is expected to turn himself in immediately after formal sentencing.

On Tuesday night, Wayne appeared at Madison Square Garden alongside Young Jeezy during Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Tour.

As of press time, it's unclear if the superstar MC will stay in New York or return to Miami, where he resides. His lawyer, Stacey Richman, suggested Florida would be better to spend his remaining free time. "Maybe he's going to go home for the weekend," Richman said. "I think I would — the weather's nicer down there."

Diddy is going to the hometown of his friend and greatest artist Notorious B.I.G. next week to celebrate Big's life and legacy at Brooklyn club the Lab.

"We're trying to make March 9th a national hip-hop holiday," Diddy told MTV News. "It already is, on the low. MTV is going to have a big special. We're doing a party. I'm going to Brooklyn. It's gonna be the first time I'm throwing a party in Brooklyn. I'm from Harlem. Everybody in Harlem knows you don't usually go over the bridge to Brooklyn. It's a big, big deal. Me being such a Harlemite, I'm going over there to pay respect to my man. It's gonna be a big party in Brooklyn with Mister Cee. It's a big day. It's a day to celebrate his life. It's a day to celebrate the life of the man. We done did the movie, the records. It's something that, I guess, as a label we're obsessed with: making sure people don't forget about this man in a positive way. March 9 is Biggie Day. ... Bump Biggie all day, feel good and positive."

Diddy also said that, unlike some of the more swank shindigs like his 40th birthday party, it is not a black-tie affair. You do have to be extra fly, though.

"You could wear any of your sides of Biggie," he welcomed. "He had his 'Machine Gun Funk' attire. He had his 'Big Poppa' attire. Come as you are. Come with some positive energy. Get ready to shout his lyrics. We gonna have a special show we putting together for him. It's gonna be off the chain."

On Tuesday, MTV Jams will be playing videos by B.I.G. and a slew of other fallen musical soldiers, such as Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Aaliyah, Big Pun, the Lost Boyz and their deceased member Freaky Tah and Camoflauge. March 14 on MTV2, "Sucker Free Sunday" is running a special tribute to Biggie, hosted by Diddy.

'American Idol' Consolidates Singers' Twitter, Facebook Accounts

Instead of individual pages, all the contestants will communicate with fans through one season-nine account.
By James Montgomery

Want to tweet Katie Stevens? Or become Facebook pals with Tim Urban? Well, it might be too late.

On Wednesday (March 3), "American Idol" producers put the kibosh on season nine's grand social-networking experiment, consolidating the contestants' individual Twitter and Facebook accounts into a pair of official, show-related pages.

At roughly 6 p.m. ET, every season-nine hopeful sent out a generic tweet, advising fans that "all my updates from now on will be on our Official 'American Idol' 9 Contestant Page ... @AI9Contestants." And on each individual Facebook account, a message was posted that read, "Thanks so much for joining my Fan Page! All my updates from now on will be on our Official American Idol 9 Contestant Page, please become a fan there to read all my updates throughout the season!"

It's not known if the decision was simply housekeeping-related — i.e. a way to bring all individual "Idol" Facebook and Twitter accounts under one roof — or if producers had been gauging the number of followers each contestant had been racking up since the season began and made the move as a way of leveling the playing field. It's also not clear if each "Idol" contestant will continue communicating with fans through the individual accounts.

When the social-networking idea was announced earlier this season, we caught up with some "Idol" experts to see if they thought it would make a difference. Professor Robert Thompson, director of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, withheld judgment on just how big a deal the social-media openness could be. "It would be one thing if they said, 'All restrictions off,' and they allowed them to go on there and say whatever they want," he said. "That could be really interesting or really problematic. My guess is, if it's any indication of how the show's modus operandi has been in the past, these things will be highly controlled. That said, I would love to go on Facebook and Twitter and see them gossiping and dissing fellow competitors. That would have a certain juicy, 'Jersey Shore' deliciousness to it."

A spokesperson for 19 Entertainment, which produces "American Idol," could not be reached for comment on the matter by press time.

When Jessica Simpson sat down with Oprah Winfrey on her talk show Wednesday (March 3), she addressed everything from criticism about her weight to her relationship with John Mayer to her new VH1 show, "The Price of Beauty."

"I'm doing very good," she told Oprah, who she last sat down with five years ago, adding that the criticism she faces in the tabloids is always with her. "I can't say that I've allowed myself to ignore it, because it's everywhere. Those voices are inside my head, sometimes when I fall asleep."

As for Mayer and his comments in Playboy, in which he referred to his ex as "crack cocaine" and "sexual napalm," Simpson said, "I'm not angry. I'm not angry. I'm — well, I'm a little bit angry. ... I'm a little bit angry. Um ... well, I don't want people to know how I am in bed. I guess it could have been a lot worse. ... My phone is ringing off the hook, I have to say."

While Mayer's comments left her feeling "betrayed," she said it was more difficult when people started saying that she had gained weight, noting that the "mom jeans" photo taken while she was performing was her lowest point. "People [were] talking about my weight for an entire year," she said. "It's like people just couldn't stop talking about my weight fluctuating.

"It would bother any woman, I would think," she added. "I had to get to a place where I had to guard myself. The fact that I was famous last year for gaining 10 pounds, it's ridiculous, and it's really sad."

Although she doesn't feel it's fair that she's received so much negative attention, she does say she "opened myself up to the world of judgment and of people's opinions" after her reality show "Newlyweds" with ex-husband Nick Lachey. "The sad part about it is, when everything came out, I didn't want to say anything about the weight, because I felt guilty," she said. "I felt like if people look at me and maybe they're a size bigger and they think they're fat because of what the media says, I didn't want to feed into it. I didn't want to let people know it was affecting me."

Now, however, she said she loves her curves and is ready to expose the world's ideas of beauty on her new reality show, "The Price of Beauty," set for a March 15 debut. "I'm interested in learning more about myself and what I value in myself and letting that be the beautiful part of me, rather than putting on the makeup or wearing the right designer," she said. "It really is about the heart of a woman that makes her beautiful."

Calling the pressure from the media to be thin "disgusting," she said that's why she decided to make the show. She added that her strength comes from her family. "I have an incredible family. They are my backbone," she said. "And then I have my best friends that I surround myself with. I just try to journal and try to discover how I can fight this on my own, as well.

"Nobody else can [define] beauty but myself," she continued. "Nobody's words, nobody's compliments, nobody's love, none of that. ... It's all what I have within myself. Every day will continue to be a journey. Every day, we'll find something new out about ourselves that is authentic and is unique, but I really just finally relaxed. I don't care what people have to say about my weight. I really don't, because I think I look great."

Trina Talks More About Leaked Photos

By Jayson Rodriguez

Racy images of Trina from her stolen cell phone caused quite a stir when they leaked online recently, but it was the photos the Miami rapper took of a skin condition she had that created the most buzz. In those photos, Trina is seen holding up her arm, which had broken out in hives — and more blog comments were directed at those images than the nude photos of her that were made public.

"When you see something and you don't know what it is, I photograph it 'cause I want to know what it was," the rapper told MTV News. "When I went to the doctor, I didn't have it, it was gone, 'cause I took [medication] and it went away. I showed it, 'cause I wanted to know what it was. I need you to tell me what I'm allergic to."

Her doctor eventually referred her to an allergist who conducted a series of tests, according to the rapper. Her doctor originally suggested the breakout may have been caused by a food allergy or a reaction to makeup.

"We tried to figure out what triggered this breakout," she said. "It was explained to me that it was Urticaria, which is basically hives."

Stress, she said, might have ultimately been the reason, though she admitted she wasn't entirely sure why she broke out.

Trina is currently hard at work on her fifth album Amazin', featuring the single "Million Dollar Girl" with Diddy and Keri Hilson.

In the meantime, she and her management have called on authorities to investigate the leaked images.

"I'm actually having it looked into by the FBI and it's gonna be a bigger situation than just leaked photos," she told MTV News. "Hopefully we can deal with the situation and put an end to it."
