'American Idol' Top 12: Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus Come Out On Top

Didi Benami and Casey James also get praise from the judges during big-stage debut.

The "American Idol" season-nine top 12 made it to the big stage Tuesday night (March 16) to take on the songs of the Rolling Stones. And, in a wakeup call on the first night of mixed-gender competition, the women served notice that they really are the ones to beat this year as Siobhan Magnus drew more raves and Crystal Bowersox had yet another solid performance.

Brawny football-player-turned-singer Michael Lynche was up first, singing the appropriately sexy "Miss You," playing it like a Sam Cooke-style soul burner, complete with plenty of falsetto whoops and hollers and vigorous hand gestures.

Randy Jackson and Ellen DeGeneres thought it continued Lynche's winning ways and provided a nice kickoff to the night. Kara DioGuardi thought Michael delivered on the swagger inherent in the Stones' live show, and Simon Cowell praised him for his confidence but thought the dancing was a bit "corny" at times.

Knoxville, Tennessee, native Didi Benami went torchy with "Play With Fire," singing the song as a dark jazz ballad while slinking across the big stage and emoting into the camera.

Kara thought the eeriness of the song combined with the sweetness of Benami's voice was a nice mixture. "For the first time for me in weeks, Didi, you're on fire," Randy said. Cowell thought the tune began to show what kind of artist Benami could be.

Casey James rocked out "It's All Over Now," playing a Dixie-fried boogie take on the tune while occasionally strumming an electric guitar and tossing his golden locks at all the right moments.

After telling him several weeks ago to stop trying to be a rock star, Kara said James finally was a rock star in his best performance yet. But Simon said, despite looking great and singing well, it felt more like an audition that didn't really make use of the big stage. "You've got to push yourself," he said. "Not just be a guy standing in the middle of the stage playing the guitar. It has to be more than that. ... Just be a star."

Another Texas kid, Lacey Brown, went with an orchestral version of 1967's "Ruby Tuesday" complete with a string quartet. She sang in her coquettish 1960s pixie pop voice, seated on the edge of the stage while tweaking the melody just enough to make it her own.

Cowell said Brown's vocals are strong but that she performs like an actress and overthinks it too much. Ellen didn't like how she sat down during the most uptempo bits and felt it was a bit sleepy.

Needing to get back into his early groove, Andrew Garcia let it bleed with "Gimme Shelter," laying on some gritty Cee-Lo-like soul as he awkwardly paced across the front of the stage with the mic stand while hitting a series of big notes at the end.

For Randy it was way pitchy, while Ellen dubbed it his best performance to date. Kara focused on the meaning of the lyrics again, saying the anti-Vietnam War intensity didn't come through even as the vocal chops finally crept back. "I wanted to feel that from you, what you were talking about," she said. "I felt it at times, but most of the times I didn't." Cowell mocked DioGuardi for taking the song too literally and said the vocals were good, if a bit weaker then they were in rehearsal.

Teenager Katie Stevens needed to go big to stay in the game, which she did with the iconic ballad "Wild Horses." Sitting on a stool under a harsh spotlight center stage, Stevens sang a big pop-diva version of the tune recently covered by Susan Boyle, struggling at first with the melody and then finding her big voice on the long final note.

Randy and Paula thought, despite some pitch problems, it was a strong performance, and Simon said it was the first time she's chosen a good song, even if the emotion drained out in the second half.

Clawing back from the abyss, Tim Urban had a chance to solidify his place on the show with a Jason Mraz-y acoustic reggae run through "Under My Thumb." The arrangement was lively and fun, though the vocals fell flat at points.

Kara and Simon applauded him for going out on a limb and making it his own, but Cowell said it just didn't work and probably offended Stones fans. "I think it was a crazy decision," he said.

Resident quirky girl Siobhan Magnus went with "Paint It Black." Wearing a gothy dress, Magnus opened the tune as a turgid symphonic ballad, then rocked it out, unleashing another one of her Adam Lambert-esque rebel yells as the song built to a wild crescendo.

"You rise above. ... You're like Snooki's poof — you just stand out and I like it," Ellen gushed. Cowell said it was the standout performance of the night because some people would love it while others would hate it.

Former paint-store clerk Lee Dewyze took on "Beast of Burden," transforming the sultry rock tune into a clap-along bro-down acoustic ditty with shades of Hootie and the Blowfish-meets-Dave Matthews.

Simon said he likes Lee and his voice but that he again chose a safe, forgettable song. "Stamp your mark on the competition and stop thinking other people are better than you," he said. Kara, meanwhile, said he's growing more than any other contestant from week-to-week.

Paige Miles just squeaked into the top 12 despite a rough week, so choosing the country swinging "Honky Tonk Women" was a bold move. The bump-and-grind urban-cowgirl arrangement suited her scratchy-soul vocal style.

Randy liked it but wanted more energy, and both women and Simon applauded her for hitting big notes despite struggling with laryngitis, though Cowell thinks she still needs to find a way to connect.

The other remaining teen in the competition, Pennsylvania native Aaron Kelly, took the sensitive route with a piano-ballad take on "Angie." Though it was low-energy and a bit glum, Kelly's urgent vocals were strong, and he brought his country twang to the soft-rock arrangement.

"Your mom was right — you were born to sing," Randy said, comparing Kelly to a young Justin Timberlake. After slamming him for not connecting with his song last week, Kara said the high-schooler set her straight with his emotional delivery. Cowell predicted disaster during Stones week but was pleasantly surprised by how Kelly sang the song well within his range.

Closing the show was this year's singer to beat, Crystal Bowersox, who couldn't miss with "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Strumming her beat-up acoustic, Bowersox strolled out and laid her bluesy pipes on a funky soul reworking of the legendary ode to yearning.

None of the judges thought it was her best performance, though Ellen started to see some personality for the first time in the competition as Crystal loosened up onstage. Despite coming out the clear favorite, Cowell said Magnus bested Crystal because her song had more of a dramatic flair.

Lil Wayne Issued Bench Warrant In Arizona Drug Case

Rapper missed court date because he's serving New York prison sentence.

A Superior Court judge in Yuma, Arizona, issued a bench warrant for Lil Wayne on Tuesday when the rapper failed to appear in court to face drug and weapons charges. Of course, the rapper (born Dwayne Michael Carter) missed the court date because he recently began a one-year prison stretch in New York on gun charges.

The warrant was issued because Wayne did not appear in court for a final trial management conference, according to The Associated Press, but his attorney James Tilson said his client could not make it because of the sentence he has been serving at New York's Rikers Island jail since March 8.

The Arizona case stems from a January 2008 stop at the a border checkpoint 78 miles east of Yuma, in which authorities claim they found cocaine, ecstasy and a handgun on Wayne's bus. Wayne was charged with possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Though Tilson said he has filed motions to have Wayne's March 30 trial date vacated and asked that his client be allowed to appear in Yuma when he finishes his New York jail sentence, Yuma County prosecutor Deann Sandry said Arizona now considers the rapper a convicted felon and believes a bench warrant should be issued and his bond increased to $150,000.

Neither Arizona prosecutors nor Tilson could be reached for comment at press time.

MTV's Musical March Madness: Band Bracketology

Posted: 17 Mar 2010 03:50 AM PDT

We pit the top 65 rock bands in the business against one another, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Look, I love college. I love basketball. And I love gambling. So March Madness is sort of like Christmas, Thanksgiving and my 21st birthday all rolled into one. For one glorious month, I am overjoyed, overstuffed and frequently make bad decisions (like picking Baylor to go to the Final Four this year). And on Sunday, as I sat on my couch watching ESPN's apoplectic coverage of the 2010 NCAA basketball tournament bracket, I had a thought: What if I combined my love of those things with my other true passion, music? (Oh, and making superfluous lists too.)

Inspired, I spent the next few days compiling a list of the top 65 rock bands in the business — a task that was considerably (and sadly) much tougher than I had previously imagined (because, well, I don't know if you've noticed or not, but rock is sort of going through a rough patch at the moment). Frustrated, I checked the Billboard rock charts, listened to the radio and even read a blog or two, and finally, I had my field of 65. These are the bands that — in my best estimation — people actually care about, the ones who sell out arenas, lodge songs on the charts and manage to move units. Some of them I love, others I know nothing about, but they're all here.

Next, I ranked them, based on my own personal foibles and some actual data too. I moved a few teams around based on geography (because no one wants to travel all that far during the tournament); weighed questions like "Would 3OH!3 be the second-place team in the WAC?" and "Do All Time Low belong in the ACC or the Atlantic Sun?" (strength of schedule matters, after all); stared at my list for about a day; and then set my field. I was determined. I was a selection committee of one. I am probably going crazy.

So here, after much consternation, is my Musical March Madness — my Band Bracketology (alliteration!). How do teams advance? I have no idea. What do they get for winning the championship? You got me. All I know is that I had to do this, and so it is done.

You can see my entire bracket here, and I've broken down each region to highlight key matchups and whatnot. Oh, and maybe we can turn this into some sort of contest or something. If you want to print out my bracket, fill out your picks, scan 'em in, then e-mail the bracket back to me. I'll select the most creative (and logical ... no 16 seed is gonna win it all) entry, which will win a prize of some indeterminate value. Maybe you could write some of this column one week — who knows?

Anyway, if you've got an insane amount of free time (like me) and are insane (again, like me), then you can send your brackets to BTTS@MTVStaff.com.

And, without further ado, let's let the (largely arbitrary) madness begin. Oh, and P.S., I spent waaay more time on this than I probably should have.

The #1 Seeds
Nickelback:The Canadian rockers landed the #1 seed in the Midwest region, if only because that's where their music is played the most (broad generalizations are essential when you're the sole member of the selection committee). Also, though their Dark Horse album came out in late 2008, it continues to dominate to this day, having sold more than 2.5 million copies. Someone you know owns it. You may not like them, but you've got to admire their consistency. Sort of like Duke.

Blink-182: The committee gave them the #1 spot in the West region based on the strength of their comeback tour and the never-ending hype surrounding their still-in-the-works sixth album, which could come out in time for them to grab a #1 in next year's tournament (but probably won't). Also, Mark Hoppus is a nice dude. That goes a long way with the committee. A band with a storied history and a solid track record. So ... Kansas?

Coldplay: Still one of the hugest bands in the world, despite not releasing a new album last year, Coldplay are #1 in the East region (it's closest to their native England, and geography always plays a part in seeding). The debate rages if they'll play in their home uniforms (tattered military jackets, epaulets and ribbons) or their away (tattered military jackets, epaulets and ribbons). A classic finesse team, Coldplay won't beat you into submission, but they find a way to win. They are Kentucky. Brian Eno is their Adolph Rupp.

Kings of Leon: #1 in the South — and practically everywhere else — the Kings enter the tournament as my top-ranked team, based largely on their massive 2009. They finally broke through to U.S. audiences, after years of scrumming and slumming. The committee loved their strength of schedule, unyielding work ethic and grinding style of play. In other words, they are Syracuse.

Midwest
The so-called "flyover states" get a bracket positively brimming with appropriate bands, including fifth-seeded Slipknot, 10th-seeded Breaking Benjamin and 11th-seeded Shinedown (once again, broad generalizations are the rule of the day come tourney time). Muse is the surprise #2 seed, since they keep hanging around on modern-rock radio. Not sure why Cobra Starship ended up out here, but Saporta and company better bring their A-game for their opening-round matchup against Shinedown. The Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers are name picks, making the field despite all evidence to the contrary (sort of like Michigan State). The Pete Wentz/ Patrick Stump tussle should be a barn-burner. The Hold Steady grabbed the automatic bid as champions of the Mid-American Conference and because something like 90 percent of their songs are set in the Midwest. Possible sleeper? OK Go at #12, still riding high on the success of their "This Too Shall Pass" video.

(1) Nickelback vs. (16) The Hold Steady
(2) Muse vs. (15) Red Hot Chili Peppers
(3) Foo Fighters vs. (14) AFI
(4) The White Stripes vs. (13) Rise Against
(5) Slipknot vs. (12) OK Go
(6) Cobra Starship vs. (11) Shinedown
(7) 3OH!3 vs. (10) Breaking Benjamin
(8) Pete Wentz vs. (9) Patrick Stump

West
A bracket loaded with talent (probably the second-toughest field in the tournament), nostalgia (the reunited Sublime and Soundgarden, both former tournament champions looking to reclaim past glories) and good vibes (thanks mostly to fourth-seeded Jack Johnson), the West region is solid from top to bottom. Key first-round matchups include the top-seeded Blink taking on feisty 16 seed Angels & Airwaves (these two have a history), a battle for Pacific Northwest supremacy between Death Cab for Cutie and Soundgarden (upset alert) and a tough draw for fifth-seeded (yet scuffling) My Chemical Romance, who take on the upstart Gorillaz. Panic! at the Disco and the Young Veins are co-champions of the Mountain West Conference, in case you were wondering.

(1) Blink-182 vs. (16) Angels & Airwaves
(2) Green Day vs. (15) Panic! at the Disco
(3) Jack Johnson vs. (14) The Young Veins
(4) Pearl Jam vs. (13) Hollywood Undead
(5) My Chemical Romance vs. (12) Gorillaz
(6) Weezer vs. (11) Sublime
(7) Death Cab for Cutie vs. (10) Soundgarden
(8) Modest Mouse vs. (9) 30 Seconds to Mars

East
The self-proclaimed "intellectual enclave" (OK, I just made that up, but I bet someone from the Upper West Side has said this at some point) gets the "blog bracket," packed with buzz bands, aging indie acts and, well, U2 (I had to put them somewhere). Animal Collective are the #2 seed in the East, something that will come as a surprise to 99 percent of the U.S. but not the blogging elite, who probably wanted them as the #1 (or, deciding that they like Panda Bear's solo stuff better, not have them in the tournament at all). Also making appearances are finesse bands like Owl City, Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear and Phoenix. The Radiohead/Spoon matchup should have the thin-and-pasty set glued to their seats, and fifth-seeded Phoenix faces a tough test from #12 seed the National. Also, inexplicably in as the #15 seed, Faith No More could bully their way past AnCo then terrify the winner of the MGMT/ Arcade Fire matchup and wind up in the Sweet 16. But, really, this bracket is Coldplay's to lose. Oh, and Tokio Hotel are the #16 seed on the basis of their last album, so deal with it. The committee cannot overlook cold, hard facts.

(1) Coldplay vs. (16) Tokio Hotel
(2) Animal Collective vs. (15) Faith No More
(3) Owl City vs. (14) The Gaslight Anthem
(4) Vampire Weekend vs. (13) Pavement
(5) Phoenix vs. (12) The National
(6) Grizzly Bear vs. (11) U2
(7) MGMT vs. (10) Arcade Fire
(8) Radiohead vs. (9) Spoon

South
The bracket of death. Huge talent will go head-to-head down South, where the field is so stacked that Nick Jonas only got in as a #12 seed. But the real wild card here is Lil Wayne, who nabbed a #4 seed despite only sorta being a rock act. If he shows up (and showing up isn't exactly his strong suit), he could run the table here. I probably should have flipped Paramore and the Dave Matthews Band, but I already filled out the official bracket in ink, so, too late. Huge first-round tilts include the 8/9 game, which pits Kris Allen against Adam Lambert in a rematch of last season's "American Idol" finale, John Mayer versus Nick Jonas (an old-fashioned "heartthrob-off") and Phish vs. My Morning Jacket, which could possibly make the jam-band universe explode. The top-seeded Kings get the winner of the Against Me!/ Creed play-in game, an all-Florida matchup of good versus evil. I've just decided that Phish grabbed the automatic bid as champions of the super-stony America East Conference, btw.

(1) Kings of Leon vs. (16) Against Me!/ Creed
(2) Paramore vs. (15) Coheed and Cambria
(3) Dave Matthews Band vs. (14) Them Crooked Vultures
(4) Lil Wayne vs. (13) Alice in Chains
(5) John Mayer vs. (12) Nick Jonas & the Administration
(6) Phish vs. (11) My Morning Jacket
(7) All-Time Low vs. (10) Mastodon
(8) Kris Allen vs. (9) Adam Lambert

St. Patrick's Day fanatics are facing another tough decision this year, with the annual celebration of Irish culture falling in the middle of the week for the second year in a row.

One of the nation's premier shamrocking bands, Boston punks the Dropkick Murphys, happen to have a new live album, Live on Lansdowne, which was recorded last year during their seven-show, six-night St. Paddy's run. They're back at the House of Blues in Boston on Wednesday night (March 17) for the second night of a sold-out stand with Sick of It All and gypsy punks Larry and His Flask.

As usual, Boston is a nexus of Irish rock gigs, with Toronto's appropriately named Celtic rock band Enter the Haggis teaming up with Hoots and Hellmouth at the city's Showcase Live! one of the city's favorite sons, former Murphys singer Mick McColgan, and his Street Dogs hit the Cobra Lounge in Chicago on Wednesday as well.

California's answer to the Murphys, Flogging Molly — who also have a new live album out, Live at the Greek Theatre — are in the midst of their annual Green 17 Tour, which will find them in Tempe, Arizona, for the big night playing at the Luckyman's St. Patrick's Day Bash at Tempe Beach Park.

Another long-running Irish punk act, Black 47, who warmed up for the big day with a show at Boston's Showcase Live! on Tuesday night, will touch down at B.B. King's in New York to play their 21st St. Patrick's Day gig, also a celebration of a new CD, Bankers & Gangsters. One of the most popular traditional Irish bands on the planet, the long-running Chieftains, have a gig at New York's Town Hall in support of their new album, San Patricio, which blends the music of the Emerald Isle and Mexico with guest spots from Linda Ronstadt, Liam Neeson and Los Tigres del Norte.

And while legendary pub rockers the Pogues don't have any gigs planned this year, sadly, Chicago's the Tossers will do their best to honor the spirit of Shane MacGowan and company with a throwdown at one of their hometown's premier rock clubs, the Metro.

And finally, celtic rockers the Young Dubliners will play the ShamRock in the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego in the evening and then hit the House of Blues in Los Angeles for a 10:30 gig later that night. The ShamRock will also feature sets from Irish pub rockers the Fooks, No Doubt cover band No Duh and a headline spot from SD's favorite Irish punk band the Down Family.

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Lloyd Banks and Juelz Santana have perhaps the biggest record in New York City right now with "Beamer, Benz or Bentley." Santana recently told us about the next shout-out to the Big Apple — he's lined up some of NYC's finest for a track from his upcoming The Reagan Era mixtape.

"We got another record for the mixtape," Juelz explained of how he and Banks plan to follow up their current smash. "That record's actually got me, Fabolous, Jadakiss and Banks on it. ... We took the Estelle sample from 'American Boy' that goes 'Take me to New York' and kept repeating that. I sent it to everybody that I felt [could kill it], which was me, Fab, Banks and Jada. But me and Banks gonna have to do another one together with just me and him. That record is crazy. That Reagan Era is gonna be a problem — that's why I been taking my time strategically building up. I think now is a better time. Every day I'm drawing more attention to myself."

While Juelz has the video for his record with Lil Wayne "Home Run" — also off of The Reagan Era — coming soon, he's still excited about "Beamer, Benz or Bentley."

"I knew what that song was gonna be when we did the record," Juelz said about his duet with Banks. "The beat is so unique, then you got two artists that's never done a record before. And it's a record that people would like to hear. It's a 'hood record and we was both spitting on there — you rarely get that anymore, especially with two artists like me and Banks. A lot of time people teaming up and they just making records because the names sound good. But the records don't sound good because they either rushed or n---as just getting up just to get up. You know how they say when two artists get together and make a song how it is supposed to be? It completes everything we do. It's radio, but it's still hard. 'Beamer, Benz or Bentley,' that's still 'hood rich. It captures the essence that people would have liked for it to have with me and Banks on the same record."

Santana says The Reagan Era will be out before the end of the month.

Not only is Jessica Simpson returning to the world of reality TV for her new docu-series, "The Price of Beauty," but she's also giving fans some new music, thanks to the show's theme song, "Who We Are." Simpson worked with Billy Corgan, Evan Bogart, Shari Short and Kerry Brown on the track and said it really embraces the show's theme about loving the person you are.

"I ended up writing the song with some friends and it was about all these places that I'd gone to and the experience that I had," she told MTV News about the track written specifically for the show. The tune reflects what she learned as she traveled the globe and observed that different cultures find different things beautiful. "It's about the beauty of who we are and embracing that and knowing that we are all authentic — that every single person is different," she added. "But they all have something different about themselves that they need to discover."

In the song, Simpson seems to answer critics with lines like "We're beautiful/ Our flaws and all/ They're beautiful to me/ It's who we are, who we are/ It's who we're meant to be."

Filming the show also gave Simpson the power to silence her critics and the voices in her head. "I view the world very differently," she said. "Everything's not as big of a deal as people make it out to be, and that's a really great place to be in. I know there's nothing that anybody can say about me that will take me to a very low place, because I am stronger."

'Telephone' director Jonas Åkerlund says Gaga's work ethic and creativity remind him of Madge.

Jonas Åkerlund has collaborated with Madonna, including on her "Ray of Light" and "Music" videos. Most recently, he worked with Lady Gaga on two of her videos: "Paparazzi" and "Telephone." Given the obvious comparisons between the two ambitious blondes, is it inevitable that Gaga should one day take over Madge's pop throne?

"I really don't like to compare the artists that I work with, because they are all so unique and so different," he told MTV News about the Gaga/Madonna similarities. "One thing for sure is that Gaga is a true artist. She's really a huge talent, and she's such a hard worker. That makes me think of Madonna, because Madonna is always such a hard worker, more than anybody else."

Like Madonna, Gaga also has a unique vision. "She's always very creative," he said of Madge. "She always goes back to creativity. She has so much politics around and all these stupid rumors and gossip and all that, and some artists manage to stay above that. So in that sense, I'm fine with comparing [Gaga and Madonna], but then again, they're so different."

Åkerlund said he and Gaga have a long road ahead of them before they can have the relationship he has with the Queen of Pop. "I also have 12 years with Madonna and I have two videos with Gaga; it's the future to tell, but I think that Gaga has all the potential and all the tools and all the brain to take her creativity as far she wants to," he said. "But she's great.

"Madonna was early to be one of those artists who thought more about the concept then just focusing on the one thing," he continued. "And Gaga — that comes naturally for her. She sees her character and her career, and I'm happy to be part of it ... but it's not me; it's her. Everything comes from her."

Is Gaga the next Madonna? Tell us in the comments!

Siobhan Magnus' 'Paint It Black' Lights Up The 'American Idol' Stage

Randy Jackson tells the quirky singer she's 'bringing the drama to 'American Idol' season nine.'
By Larry Carroll

Siobhan Magnus on "American Idol" on Tuesday

She looks like Marcie from "Peanuts," embraces theatricality like Adam Lambert and sings Rolling Stones songs like she's Mick Jagger's long-lost daughter (which, knowing Mick's reputation, could be a possibility). Her name is Siobhan Magnus, and her rising star shone bright on Tuesday's (March 16) top 12 episode of "American Idol."

A resident of Barnstable, Massachusetts, Siobhan's huge family has always encouraged her artistic endeavors. And on Tuesday night, she took them to a level as big as Mick's lips, singing a dramatic interpretation of the Rolling Stones classic "Paint It Black."

Released in 1966 from their fourth album Aftermath, the song was written by one of the all-time great rock teams: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. A #1 hit in both the U.S. and U.K., Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #174 on their 2004 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Interestingly enough, the song's signature sitar riff was hatched after Stones guitarist Brian Jones visited George Harrison of the Beatles, who at the time was experimenting with Middle Eastern sounds.

Sorrowful and dark but with an impossibly catchy chorus, the lyrics are believed to be about a man mourning his dead girlfriend. As such, the song has been employed in recent years as a pop-culture shortcut to signify death and mourning — from "Stir of Echoes" to "Full Metal Jacket" to "The Sopranos." The song was also given a shout-out in the My Chemical Romance tune "Welcome to the Black Parade."

Wearing an appropriately colored black dress and "bringing the drama to 'American Idol' season nine," as Randy Jackson put it, Siobhan painted the stage black — and you could color the judges impressed.

Lil Wayne and his Young Money cohorts Drake and Nicki Minaj stormed the stage at Madison Square Garden two weeks ago for a guest turn during Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Tour.

The Roc Nation head called the spot "fantastic." Turns out, Drake and Nicki Minaj thought so too.

Young Jeezy, who welcomed the trio to his set, first introduced Nicki Minaj to thunderous applause.

The Queens native said that prior to the concert, she and everyone else in Wayne's camp were spending time with the rapper after he learned he had an extra day of freedom. Lil Wayne was scheduled to turn himself in to begin his prison stint that afternoon. A fire at the courthouse, however, prevented Wayne's sentencing.

With some time to kill, the crew got a phone call to put the plans in motion.

"We were just talking to Wayne and he was being his crazy self," Nicki told MTV News. "I got a call from Gee [Wayne's co-manager and former executive at Roc-A-Fella] and the first name I heard was Jay-Z and I thought, 'There's no way Jay-Z approved me to be on this show.' And I was like, 'Do I want to?' I'm on the next thing, smoking. I canceled meetings that day and the next day.

"Madison Square Garden? I'm from New York," she continued. "This means the world to me — to be there with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Drake. It was the stuff that dreams are made of for a girl. Girls aren't usually in those unique little circles."

Drake heaped praise on his boss, Lil Wayne, for sharing his extra day (that turned into an extra week) with his fans.

"It was a moment where people thought Wayne had gone in and the surprise was he had an extra day, and a selfless individual came out and showed up for the people of New York," Drake told MTV News. "The city he got convicted in, of all places. It was a great night."

The "Best I Ever Had" MC even joked about violating Jay-Z's all-black dress code that was set for the festivities.

"That's just who I am," Drake said, laughing about his all-white getup. "Young Angel."

Every season, "American Idol" casts a new batch of aspiring singers. And every season, without fail, tabloids work overtime to dig up as much dirt on the newbies as possible. Whether it's Antonella Barba's risqué photos or Bo Bice's drug arrests, gossip rags and blogs get a ton of mileage out of "Idol" contestants' youthful indiscretions.

Season nine is no exception. Finalist Casey James is the latest in a long line of "Idol" singers with a rap sheet. Last week, Star magazine published James' 2001 mug shot, taken when the then-teenager was slapped with a DWI. (James eventually served a monthlong jail sentence in 2003 after getting busted an additional two times.)

But the laid-back Texan (who impressed the judges early on with a vulnerable-rocker vibe and a shirtless audition) is taking it all in stride. When MTV News caught up with Casey at the "American Idol" top 12 red carpet last week, James insisted he had nothing to hide. "There's not a lot there. What you see is what you get there," Casey said, adding, "I think everybody can do a quick Google search and pretty much catch everything there is to talk about me as far as bad stuff goes."

Casey also implied that tabloids are wasting their time by scouring his past, while giving them a helpful (albeit tongue-in-cheek) hint: "I'll create something new in the future," he laughed. "Just you all wait for it!" (But sorry, self-described "cougar" Kara DioGuardi. Casey promises no sex tapes are in the works.)

In the meantime, James is putting all his energy into recuperating from the flu and delivering an arresting performance. On Tuesday night (March 16), he'll take to the new "Idol" stage, along with the rest of the top 12 contestants, for Rolling Stones night.
