Taylor Swift Stays On Top Of Billboard Albums Chart; Fall Out Boy Squeak Into Top 10

Underwhelming debut for FOB's Folie a Deux and Soulja Boy Tell'em's latest.

The last time Fall Out Boy released an album, early 2007's Infinity On High, the Chicago group scored a couple of personal bests: their first #1 debut and a first-week high of nearly 260,000 copies sold.

It's different this time. With very little major competition in a fairly quiet late 2008 release period, FOB's Folie à Deux will just manage to sneak into the top 10 next week at #8 on sales of just over 149,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

Despite a single declaring "I Don't Care" and a media blitz that included an aborted free show in a New York park and some salty bedroom talk from bassist Pete Wentz on "The Howard Stern Show," FOB were bested in their chart debut by R&B singers Keyshia Cole — whose Different Me landed at #2 on sales of more than 321,000 — and Jamie Foxx, whose Intuition logged 265,000 for a #3 debut.

Holding strong at #1 for the second week was what appears to be the Christmas season go-to album, Taylor Swift's Fearless, which logged another 330,000 units, pushing the country singer's album past the 1.8 million in sales mark in just six weeks.

The new debuts squeezed Britney Spears' Circus down two spots to #4 on sales of 195,000, pushing Brit's latest close to the one million mark, followed by Beyoncé's I Am ... Sasha Fierce, which dipped two spots, trailing Spears by just over 300 copies.

The rest of the top 10 was merely shuffled, with Nickelback's Dark Horse stumbling two spots down to #6 with 194,000 in sales, followed by the soundtrack to "Twilight" with 155,000, AC/DC's still-strong Black Ice at #9 with 142,000 more satisfied Wal-Mart customers, and the Now 29 compilation rounding out the top 10 with 138,000.

Other debuts outside the top 10 include Plies with Da Realist at #14 on sales of 114,000, followed closely behind by the All-American Rejects' When the World Comes Down, which moved a shade over 111,000. The news was not as good for Souljaboy Tellem, whose iSouljaBoyTellem quietly debuted at #43 with 45,000 in sales. Punk veterans the Offspring also made it onto the charts, although way down at #186, with just over 8,000 copies of their latest, Rise & Fall, Rage & Grace.

A couple of last week's big debuts took serious hits, with sales of Brandy's Human falling more than 60 percent, dropping from #15 to #66. Musiq Soulchild's On My Radio suffering a similar double-digit plunge in sales, dropping that album from #11 to #52, and Common's Universal Mind Control shedded just under 60 percent of its previous week's sales with 34,000 units shifted, to drop from #12 to #56. Not surprisingly, it was a week of double-digit gains for a slew of Christmas-themed albums, with titles from Enya, Faith Hills, Elvis Presley, Yo-Yo Ma all enjoying healthy jumps, as well as the soundtrack to "Mamma Mia," which skated up 16 spots to #18 for one of its best sales weeks since its chart debut back in August.

Topping all those critics' year-end lists seems to have helped TV on the Radio, since their Dear Science had its third-best week of sales (4,600) since the album debuted on the charts back in September.

Our Top Stories Of 2008: Britney Spears, Heath Ledger, Chris Brown And More

Pieces on Lil Wayne, Mariah and Nick, the VMAs and more were also among the most-viewed videos of the year.

We get it. You can't get enough of "Twilight" or Britney Spears. And if the producers of the teen vamp flick had cast the Circus ring-mistress in their movie — we could have all gone home early every night instead of staying here and racking our brains to figure out how to give you more of what you crave.

But, based on our list of the most-viewed MTV News videos of 2008, those weren't the only hot topics of the year. You also wanted to see Lil Wayne, a soft-focus visit to "American Idol" castoff Josiah Leming's hometown, scoop on Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, a stiff arm from Chris Brown and, of course, our recap of this year's VMAs (which you probably watched to see Britney and the cast of "Twilight" anyway).

1. Of course #1 is our preview of "Britney: For the Record," the documentary that gives a sneak peek at the behind-the-scenes drama captured during a two-month stretch in Spears' life leading up to the release of her half-million selling Circus album.

2. Not far behind Brit is our resident 60-second man Jim Cantiello recapping the biggest night of MTV's year with "VMAs in One Minute." That, of course, was the night that made headlines when Britney took home the top three prizes and opened the show with a bit featuring "Superbad" star Jonah Hill.

3. A whole lot of you enjoyed seeing Chris Brown tell our own Tim Kash that he wishes people would stop gossiping about him and unofficial girlfriend Rihanna. "My personal life is my personal life, but that's not the case with us. We're just friends." In fact, Brown suggested that the key to making relationships work in Hollywood is to just be yourself and "see as many girls as possible." Well, then.

4. One artist who wasn't shy about talking about his life was our 2008 Man of the Year himself, Lil Wayne, who gave our crew a tour of his old high school art classroom in New Orleans and entertained a prom invite from one of his biggest fans back in February. He humbly told us that "hip-hop just ain't hip-hop without me" and that he is the "best rapper alive."

5. And then there was Mariah Carey, who surprised us all with her hush-hush overnight marriage to "Wild 'N Out" star Nick Cannon. When we hooked up with Cannon back in April just before the couple's wedding, he called Carey "the most festive, remarkable person I've ever met" but was coy about their relationship. "Rumors happen," he laughed at the time, eyes evading the camera's gaze as his head bopped side-to-side like a boxer's.

6. Who could forget frequently teary 18-year-old "American Idol" castoff Josiah Leming? The Tennessean with the heart of glass didn't make the cut on the show. But when we visited his hometown of Morristown, Tennessee, the mop-topped troubadour was happy to play a few acoustic tunes on the streets of his city and show off the infamous 1989 Mercury Topaz he used to crash in.

7. Usher charmed our viewers with his talk of chivalry and wishful thinking in the video for "Trading Places," in which he fantasizes about the ladies taking control and lavishing compliments on him.

8. Just behind that daydream was the harsh reality of one of the year's most disturbing and saddening stories, the deadly plane crash that caused serious injuries to former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and musical partner DJ AM, and killed Barker's close friend and personal assistant, Lil Chris Baker and his bodyguard, Charles "Che" Still, as well as the jet's pilot and co-pilot. MTV brought you updates on the injuries to Barker and AM and words of support from Fall Out Boy just days after the September accident.

9. In other tragic news, there was the shocking accidental death of acclaimed "Dark Knight" actor Heath Ledger in January. Our tribute to 28-year-old Ledger's career-making performance in the comic book tale — which just earned him a posthumous Golden Globe nomination — also touched on some of his other memorable roles in movies such as "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Brokeback Mountain."

10. And, finally, where would a top 10 list be without a visit from our favorite dysfunctional girl group, Danity Kane? Our final spot is a catch-up with since-ousted DK cutie Aubrey O'Day, who talks way, way excitedly about the warm welcome she got when she joined the cast of "Hairspray" in July.

DJ AM Sues Over Plane Crash

DJ joins Travis Barker in filing suit against multiple defendants.

DJ AM (born Adam Goldstein) filed suit on Tuesday over the fiery plane crash that killed four people and seriously injured him and Travis Barker in September. AM claimed in the suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court that as the private Lear jet reached takeoff speed, the pilots realized that one or more of the tires had blown and that they aborted the takeoff, causing the plane to overrun the runway and crash into an embankment. Barker took similar legal action last month.

According to a copy of the suit obtained by TMZ, the filing contends that, "Rather than proceed to takeoff, they decided to abort and/or reject the takeoff in a negligent manner."

"The pilots were either poorly trained and/or failed to follow their training," the suit alleges, according to another report on People.com.

The legal action also alleges that the plane was "defective, not fit for its intended purposes and unreasonably dangerous."

Due to the aborted take-off, the plane overshot the runway, crossed a highway and crashed and burst into flames, taking the lives of the pilot, Sarah Lemmon, and co-pilot, James Bland, as well as Barker's close friend and personal assistant, "Lil" Chris Baker and bodyguard, Charles "Che" Still.

AM's suit names the estates of the two pilots, as well as Clay Lacy Aviation, Global Exec Aviation, Inter Travel & Services Inc., Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and Learjet. Baker's widow has filed a lawsuit against a similar list of defendants.

According to TMZ, AM — who, like Barker, suffered severe burns in the incident — is suing for pain and suffering, lost earnings, property damage, past and future medical and health-related expenses, and punitive damages. Barker has filed a similar suit, as has the mother of Still, though neither of those actions named the pilots' estates as defendants.

Shaheem Reid
: Obviously, that three-headed monster from the land of Interscope is going to be extremely successful when and if 50 Cent, Eminem and Dr. Dre put out albums. But I'm thinking Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 will be the album the year. Hov's rhymes and a lot of Kanye's beats? That's guaranteed timeless music. On a more underground level, I'm hoping Joe Budden and the Clipse get more shine. They have been some of the doper MCs in the game for the past few years. I thoroughly enjoyed all of Fabolous' guest appearances, so I have faith in the upcoming Loso's Way.

Rahman Dukes: I'm still waiting on that classic album from my boy Saigon's The Greatest Story Never Told. "Believe It" is still an amazing record, and that's just a taste of what to expect from the album. Of course, keeping it Queens, I can't wait to see what 50 Cent does. Fif is by far the realest cat doing it in the game. Jay-Z has been on a streak lately with all of the Kanye West-produced tracks, so his album will probably be the best of '09. Can't forget about the Clipse, and hopefully we'll finally get that Cuban Linx II. Lets go, Rae!

Of course, not everyone can win an award, so here's the best of the rest:

Standout Street CDs and Independent Albums of '08

50 Cent's Sincerely Yours, Southside
G-Unit's Return of the Body Snatchers and Elephant in the Sand
Lil Wayne and DJ Drama's Dedication 3

Prodigy's H.N.I.C. 2
J. Period's March 9th Mixtape and Best of Mary J. Blige (Three CD Edition)
Notorious B.I.G. and Big L's Live From Amsterdam
Nipsey Hussle's Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. I and II
Crooked I's Block Obama I and II

We are the best in the business, baby. See you in '09!
