The 2009 Grammy Nominees Revealed ... Probably, In Bigger Than The Sound

If, at some point today, you feel one side of your body go numb, have trouble walking, and/or are overcome with the desire to hear Herbie Hancock covering Joni Mitchell songs, well, chances are you've just got a severe case of Grammy Fever. Either that, or you are having a stroke.

If it's the former, you are not alone. On Wednesday night (December 3), in much-hyped live concert on CBS, the nominees for the 51st Annual Grammy Awards will be announced, and the excitement is palpable. There is electricity in the air — seriously, reach out and touch it! — and a buzz in the streets. People are overcome with joy and crippling paralysis. At the same time. Cars are driving off the road. Dogs are walking themselves. It's bedlam, I tell you ... bedlam!

Actually, I'm exaggerating. Not many people really care about the Grammy Awards anymore, except music-industry suits, people who are afraid to buy anything online and anyone who still listens to Herbie Hancock records (though, often, these are all the same people). This is largely because the Grammys are largely out-of-touch with reality, don't make much sense and are voted on by a shadowy cabal of "industry professionals" who have, over the years, never seen it fit to bestow an award on Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, the Beach Boys or Diana Ross, but have given Sheryl Crow nine of them.

Combine that, uh, "track record" with the rather byzantine scope and state of the voting process — for this year's awards, Recording Academy members may nominate only albums and songs released between October 1, 2007 and September 30, 2008, and those nominees are spread out across 31 fields (pop, gospel, etc.) and 110 categories within those fields — and you're faced with one resounding fact: attempting to predict just who is going to be nominated for a Grammy is near impossible.

Still, that doesn't mean I'm not going to try. After all, I did the same thing earlier this year before the Video Music Awards (a.k.a. "the only awards show that makes less sense than the Grammys"), and I ended up picking the winners in three of the eight categories — a smashing success, indeed.

So, to prevent you from having to even tune in to the Grammy nominee concert bonanza jamboree (because, really, how many times do you need to see Taylor Swift perform at a televised event?), I'm presenting my fearless (and more than likely incorrect) Grammy Nominee Predictions. I didn't pick noms in all 110 categories, because that would take about a year (and there are w-a-a-y too many choices for "Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package"), but I've taken a run at a few of the biggies. Remember, I am not a professional prognosticator, so wager accordingly.

Record of the Year

This is the award given to the song of the year (in olden tymes, songs used to be called "records"). Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" won last year, beating out the likes of Rihanna's "Umbrella," Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around ... Comes Around" and the Foo Fighters' "The Pretender" (seriously). Given that every year, this category consists of four solid, massive radio hits and one decidedly WTF track, I'm thinking the 2008 nominees will look something like this:

» Coldplay's "Viva la Vida"
» Kid Rock's "All Summer Long"
» Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love"
» Something from Al Green's Lay It Down or Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' Raising Sand (a.k.a. the token "rewarding the aging legend selection")
» Taylor Swift's "Teardrops on My Guitar"

If Swift's "Teardrops" is ineligible (and, to be honest, there is a very good chance it is, given the in-and-out game it played on country and adult-contemporary radio), look for Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" or Usher's "Love in This Club" to sneak in instead. Or perhaps Pink's "So What?" Sadly, I think my choice, the Hold Steady's "Sequestered in Memphis," is a long shot to snag a nom.

Album of the Year

Given to the actual album of the year. Last year, Herbie Hancock took this one home for his River: The Joni Letters album, besting Kanye's Graduation, the Foos' Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace and Vince Gill's These Days, among others. Given the perplexing release-date requirements, there's a pretty good chance an album competing for a Grammy at this year's awards was actually released sometime in 2007 ... also, sadly, efforts by West and Beyoncé missed the cut for inclusion, since they were released after September 30 of this year. I know, confusing indeed. Anyway, the nominees for the 2008 Album of the Year are:

» Alicia Keys' As I Am
» Coldplay' Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends
» Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III
» Metallica's Death Magnetic
» Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' Raising Sand

Keys' album was released after the cutoff date for last year's Grammys, so look for her to land a nod this year (Academy voters lover her). Same goes for Plant and Krauss' Sand. Coldplay are safe and generic and massively successful. Wayne sold a million copies in a week and should be rewarded here. Metallica's Death Magnetic is the long shot here, though it did sell well, garner positive reviews and have the benefit of having Rick Rubin's hands all over it. If not them, then perhaps Mariah or Leona Lewis take their spot.

Song of the Year

Given to the writers and composers of a song. Aside from that, confused as to how this differs from Record of the Year? Me too. So let's just press on. Oh, Winehouse's "Rehab" won this last year too.

» Duffy's "Mercy"
» Sarah Bareilles' "Love Song"
» Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love"
» John Mayer's "Say"
» Sugarland's "Stay"

My thought process for this category was basically this: Think of a bunch of songs soccer moms listen to on the radio, and go with them. John Mayer is also performing during the Grammy nominations concert, which means he's bound to grab a big nod somewhere. This might be the spot. Also, I have never heard a Sugarland song in my entire live. BTW, I will probably go five-for-five in this category, given how little thought I put into it.

New Artist

Probably the most interesting award of the year, especially because, in the past, Academy voters have decided to give it to artists who are not exactly new (Maroon Five!) or are completely unknown by 95 percent of the general public (Ledisi!). Oh, also, there is an outside chance either Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers get nominated in this category. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

» Duffy
» Katy Perry
» Leona Lewis
» Miley Cyrus
» Vampire Weekend

Sorry, tweens. I think Miley gets the nod, the JBs don't (and are Tokio Hotel even eligible? If so, maybe they get it instead). In their place, I'm putting Vampire Weekend, just because I wanna see as many boat shoes as possible at the awards ceremony. Duffy and Lewis are mortal-fricking-locks here. I also think that this is the only one of the "big four" categories Perry gets a nomination in, despite having one of the year's biggest songs. Academy voters have a long-standing policy against kissing girls and liking it.

Best Polka Album

The biggest of the big. Seriously. And not just previous winning albums have names like Polkasonic and Let's Polka 'Round.

» Brave Combo's Polka's Revenge
» Bubba Hernandez and Alex Meixner's Polka Freak Out
» Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra's Come Share the Wine
» John Gora & Gorale's Bulletproof Polkas
» Walter Ostanek and Brian Sklar's Dueling Polkas

Actually, these are just the nominees from last year's Grammy Awards. Could you tell the difference?

Is Circus Britney Spears' True Comeback LP?

Posted: 02 Dec 2008 02:40 AM PST

Experts weigh in with their first-week sales predictions.
By Chris Harris

This time last year, it was as if Britney Spears was walking around with a target on her back.

The embattled pop star was the subject of media ridicule following her performance at the 2007 Video Music Awards, and her personal travails were splashed across the pages of the nation's tabloids on an almost weekly basis. She'd just released an album that some had prematurely hailed as her comeback, Blackout, and while the LP was largely considered a commercial hit, to this day, it's yet to eclipse the 1 million-sold mark.

Fast-forward 10 months, and it's a whole new ball game. Spears is still in the spotlight, but rather than attack her, the media has been more sympathetic. Instead of delivering a shaky performance, Brit walked away a winner at the 2008 VMAs, taking home the Moonmen for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year. She's the most searched topic on Yahoo, and on Sunday, more than 3.7 million viewers tuned in to catch her MTV documentary, "Britney: For the Record." On Tuesday (December 2), she appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America," the same day she released what they're calling her "true comeback" album, Circus.

These days, it seems like everything's coming up Britney. And if early sales estimates are to be believed, Circus will likely outsell Blackout, which opened at #2 with 289,700 sold, behind the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden.

Roy Trakin, senior editor of Hits magazine, said that his sources inside the industry are predicting Circus will sell more than 300,000 units — and could even reach 400,000 — during its first week in stores, but admitted it could do even more.

"It looks like, at the very minimum, it will hit 300,000, but some people are saying it could do better than that," he said. "But this market, it's not a good market, obviously, and there have already been a couple of real disappointments coming out of the chute, with Kanye West and Guns N' Roses not performing to what they were supposed to perform even three weeks ago. I still think that's pretty good for her."

While 300,000 records might not sound like a lot for an artist as well-known as Spears, in this economic climate, it's tremendous. People are being more frugal with their cash, which could ultimately hurt sales. Then again, when Spears released Blackout, it dropped in early November — not early December, when people spend more time in stores.

Billboard senior correspondent Ed Christman said Spears' recent television appearances, the MTV special and several favorable reviews will likely help sales of the new album, even though sales are down 15 percent from last year. And while 300,000 sold is a modest number, he predicts Circus will sell more over time than Blackout has.

"The industry is telling me she'll do 300,000," he said. "That's from label sales guys, whose job it is to project sales. It's a big album, and there's a lot of goodwill toward her now. In the history of SoundScan, pop artists generally don't have big first weeks. The pop fan is more casual. They go out and get the album when they get the album. It's fans of either metal bands or rap acts who are frantic for the record — salivating — that run out the first day to get the record. So, there are plenty of big albums that have gone on to sell 6 million records that didn't sell 1 million the first week, and Britney falls into that pop category."

According to Trakin, this year's comeback feels more authentic than last year's supposed return.

"Certainly, it seems she's more prepared to come back," he said. "Given what went down on the documentary, I think there are still questions about her stability, her stamina and her desire, as well. Those are certainly issues that need to be dealt with. But there's still tremendous public interest in her. The media is pulling for her, and the critical reviews and word of mouth are certainly a lot better than last time. That will all help her sell records."

If Circus performs well, so will her upcoming tour, which kicks off in March with the Pussycat Dolls as direct support. According to Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief of Pollstar, the fact that Spears didn't tour in support of Breakdown also bodes well for ticket sales.

"My initial reaction [to Spears' tour announcement] was probably negative, but the more I've thought about it and watched things go on around here, I think this one might be a risk that ends up paying off," he said. "The initial buzz around the record seems to be pretty good, so this one might actually be a winner. It's going to be one of the first tours that goes out in the early part of the year, so it will be interesting to see how well it does."

While album sales aren't currently a strong indicator of how well a tour will do, he said that in Britney's case, A could lead to B.

"There used to be a much more direct correlation between album sales and ticket sales, but it can still be a very good indicator," he said. "If the record falls flat, that would be an indication that whatever audience you thought was there is not. If the record does well, the tour will do well."

Still, Bongiovanni continued, America is experiencing one of the most uncertain economic times in decades, "and how that's going to impact any given tour is always an open question. The thing Britney has going for her is that she's been off the scene for a while. No one has seen her recently, and that could help sell tickets."

Kevin Federline Says Britney Spears 'Blindsided' Him With Divorce

Britney's ex is happy with new child-custody agreement: 'It's totally turning around.'
By Gil Kaufman

You heard Britney Spears talk about her man problems during Sunday night's "For the Record" documentary, but now her ex-husband Kevin Federline is doing his own talking. The wannabe rapper and father of 3-year-old Preston and 2-year-old Jayden said in a new interview with People magazine that he was "blindsided" by Spears' divorce filing in 2006 and that even though the couple had trouble in their brief marriage, he never expected it to end like it did.

"It's hard enough to be in a marriage, and then have a kid, then kids. It changes everything," Federline said. "For me, I'd become more concerned with my children. Not that I ignored Britney, but my kids are always most important. ... I mean, we were having complications. I didn't give her an ultimatum, but I was trying to work stuff out with her, and she didn't even talk to me or anything and went behind my back and filed [for divorce]. [I was] completely blindsided."

Federline, 30, recalled some of the happy times as well, telling the magazine that the couple's low-key 2004 wedding is a cherished memory. "I never thought that I would get married, but it wound up happening," he said. "That was a really, really, happy, exciting moment. I pretty much realized that I was giving my life to her, and I was doing it without question." The former backup dancer also reminisces about the first time he met Spears, 27, at the Hollywood club Joseph's. "Our eyes met and that was it. We just hit it off right away. I learned real fast how much of a whirlwind the press and everything was," he said.

Attempting to counter his image in the tabloid press as an alleged gold digger, Federline told People that despite suggestions that he was fighting for custody of the couple's sons for money, he was willing to spend every dime he had to retain the right to see the boys.

"My first question to [my lawyer] was, 'Am I ever going to be able to see my children?' " said Federline, who has sole custody of the children while Spears retains visitation rights. "I told him that I would spend every last dime that I had to make sure that my children are OK. That's all that mattered. I didn't know how much power Britney had. That really scared me."

Another thing Federline said scared him was the scene in January when Spears locked herself and Jayden in her bathroom rather than hand him over to Federline's representative, not to mention the pictures later that night of the singer being carted off to a hospital on a gurney.

"That whole night is a blur," he said. "You want to talk about one of my lowest points of depression, that was probably one of them. I was very, very worried for her 'cause I care about her. That's the mother of my children. Just because I'm not in love with her doesn't mean that I don't love her. I'm definitely rooting for her. There's nothing more that I want than for her to be in the best health and doing what she loves to do."

Despite all the drama, now that Spears appears to be getting her life back on track with the new album Circus and a world tour announced on Tuesday, Federline said things do seem to be getting better. "Oh, man, it's totally turning around," he said about the new arrangement recently worked out by a judge that gives Spears more time with the boys. "It works out that [the kids] get to see her. There's structure over there, there's structure at my house. We're trying to keep the same type of schedule. It doesn't have to be completely perfect, but the foundation is there."

Though Spears avoided directly lashing out at Federline during "For the Record," in a new interview with Glamour magazine the singer takes a not-so-thinly veiled swing at her ex, saying, "In five years, I would like to be married and have a father figure for my kids, someone who is a provider and can be really stable. It's hard doing it on your own."

Tell us what you thought of Britney's documentary over on the Newsroom blog, or upload a video to YouRHere.MTV.com. "Britney: For the Record" will be re-airing throughout the week and will be available in its entirety on demand on MTV.com beginning Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

William Balfour Charged With Murders Of Jennifer Hudson's Relatives

Police say Hudson family has been a 'key partner' in investigation.

William Balfour, the only suspect so far named in the murders of Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew, has been officially charged with their homicides, the Cook County State's Attorney's office told MTV News on Tuesday (December 2).

Balfour, 27, was charged at noon with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of home invasion in connection with the deaths of Darnell Donerson, Jason Hudson and Julian King.

An arrest warrant was issued for Balfour late Monday, prompting his transfer from the reception center at Stateville Correctional Center, where he was being held for an alleged parole violation, to the Cook County jail.

The Hudson family was informed of the charges, and are "relieved and happy that the Chicago police and firemen were able to bring this case to a successful conclusion," Chicago Police Deputy Supertintendent Steve Peterson told reporters at a press conference late Tuesday afternoon.

Peterson said that the Hudson family members had been "a key partner" in the investigation, assisting in establishing a timeline of events and other parts of the investigation "that we'd rather not say at this time.

"We don't want to delve too deeply into what was done with the family members," Peterson said.

Chicago police also commended the community for "stepping up to the plate and helping police solve this case." Peterson said that community involvement was key for locating the SUV in which Julian's body was found. Police believe Julian was killed in the SUV, and on the same day as Darnell and Jason, "however, we're not exactly sure as to the timing of that," Peterson said.

A hearing that was scheduled to take place Wednesday regarding the alleged parole violations — which extended to his involvement in this case — has been rescheduled for December 10, according to Jorge Montes, chairman of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, although a bond hearing will take place on Wednesday.

Montes said that it didn't make sense to hold the scheduled parole hearing as planned, since Balfour has been transferred and the charges will impact the parole board hearing. "[The charges] certainly enhance the evidence against him," Montes told MTV News.

But even if Balfour is able to make bond on the homicide charges at his hearing Wednesday, Montes said, "he's not going anywhere," at least until the parole board hearing on December 10.

"He's in a catch-22 situation," Montes said. If he is found to have violated his parole, "we would revoke his parole [through May 2009]," Montes said.

Balfour was out on parole from the Illinois River Correctional Center on attempted-murder, carjacking and stolen-property charges, for which he had been sentenced to serve seven years.

During a closed hearing last month, investigators presented evidence that Balfour had a gun matching the weapon used in the murders. At the press conference Tuesday, police said that the weapon recovered had been linked back to the homicides, by comparing the it with casings found at the scene. There was other physical evidence as well, Peterson said, "but we don't want to give too much up prior to the hearing" scheduled for Wednesday.

The bodies of Hudson's mother, Darnell Hudson Donerson, and older brother, Jason, were discovered inside the home Hudson grew up in on Chicago's South Side on November 24. Donerson was 57 years old, and Jason was 29. Julian King, Hudson's 7-year-old nephew, was reported missing soon after. Julian's body was found in an SUV on Chicago's West Side the following Monday. All three victims died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Balfour has been the sole suspect in the killings since they were first publicized. He has denied involvement to authorities, and his alibi on the day of the killings has been contradicted by his pregnant girlfriend, who was interviewed by police. (Chicago police said Tuesday that the girlfriend was not given a "deal" to testify against Balfour.) A neighbor who lives on the block where Balfour was arrested claimed he saw a man matching Balfour's description drive up in a white SUV and park on the block around noon on Friday, three hours after the slayings. The neighbor said the man reached into the glove compartment, got out of the car carrying what appeared to be a bottle of liquor and walked into the house where Balfour was later arrested.

While police noted that "some of the investigation is ongoing," their choice of words at the conference seems to suggest they believe the case has been solved. "At this time, it doesn't appear that anyone else was involved," Peterson said.

Young Jeezy And Nas Pay Tribute To Barack Obama, MLK, Public Enemy In 'My President' Video

Plus: Jeezy hints at a possible tour with fellow Georgians T.I. and Ludacris.

ATLANTA — On June 3, at 2:08 a.m., Young Jeezy created a new hip-hop national anthem. And at the very end of that song, "My President," Jeezy reminded everyone exactly when he recorded it: "June 3, 2008."

"[That's] why I chose to timestamp it," Young said about recording the tribute to President-elect Barack Obama. "A lot of people do things for gimmicky reasons. I ain't no gimmicky dude. I just decided to do it to show I had faith in him.

"I had faith in the whole situation," he added about the presidential election. "It was more so saying, 'This man is gonna win. There's nothing to do to stop him.' Yes we can. Yes we did. It takes a nation of millions to hold us back."

Jeezy and Nas finally filmed a video for the song last weekend in Atlanta. (There were some delays due to Nas' international touring.) The whole community came out to support.

"This is Martin Luther King's 'hood," Young said with a smile, standing in front of his tour bus during a break in filming. "I don't know if y'all know it or not. Auburn Avenue. A very monumental spot. Probably one of the most monumental, historic spots we've got in Atlanta. It's a monumental video, so I wanted to do it in a monumental spot. Auburn Ave., Ebenezer Baptist Church."

Ebenezer was the church where Martin Luther King Jr. preached, and it's located just minutes from the house he grew up in. Forty years after his death, MLK's dream came to fruition with Obama heading to the White House. Jeezy paid homage to both leaders in the video, as well as to Public Enemy. He shot some of the performance scenes with the neighborhood's residents in the background, similar to what PE did in 1989 in Brooklyn, New York, for the "Fight the Power" clip.

"I did [the video] with the 'Fight the Power' concept because I remember, back in the day, Flavor Flav and Chuck D marching down the street," Jeezy explained. "They had the old people, the young people, store owners, they had picket signs, everything. It was a sense of black pride, a sense of pride, period."

In another performance scene, Jeezy and Nas rap in front of Obama — at least a picture of the president-elect.

"This what I'm all about," Nas said. "It's a celebration. The celebration of the first black president on the song from a perspective of the streets. You can't get more 'hood than my man Young Jeezy. So this is the prefect combination."

"Nas been hitting on [political] subjects even before I started thinking that way," Jeezy added about his partner. "So I thought it was only right I reach out to him and see if he wanted to do it. We made history."

Young Jeezy was one of the more vocal voices in the hip-hop community urging people to go out and vote this year. His campaigning didn't stop on November 4, however. On Monday night, Jeezy, T.I. and Ludacris were at the Georgia Capitol campaigning to get Democrat Jim Martin elected to Congress in a runoff election against Republican Saxby Chambliss.

"We won the battle," YJ said in statement. "Now it's time we win the war. Vote Jim Martin."

Jeezy, 'Cris and Tip are all slated to appear together during a December 27 concert in New York. Luda told MTV News recently that he would love for the trio to turn their allegiance into a full-fledged tour. Jeezy seemed to be down with it.

"You never know about us. The Georgia boys might put something together," he said. "We've been talking about a tour, so don't be surprised if you see it real soon."

Nickelback Remain The Dark Horse Of Rock

'We just do it the way bands used to do it,' frontman Chad Kroeger says of band's straight-up rock-and-roll style.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

There's something funny about Nickelback. Well, actually, there's plenty that's funny about them, but for the context of this article, let's just focus on one rather glaring point: Despite the fact that they have sold something north of 25 million albums worldwide, and are probably one of the 10 hugest rock acts on the planet, they still consider themselves to be complete underdogs.

And they are steadfast in this. They maintain a constant "us against the world" mentality. They grind out tour dates not in weeks or months, but years, because they don't know any other way of operating. They get positively zero respect from rock critics, and are 100 percent fine with this. And all of that is why they chose to name their new album Dark Horse.

"It just came up, this phrase, you know ... 'dark horse,' " frontman Chad Kroeger laughed. "It was like the underdog, and I always liked the underdog. ... There was just something about it, you know, like, 'Always bet on the underdog,' so there you have it. Now it's on the front of many little compact discs out there."

And Kroeger's right. There are many of those discs out there. Dark Horse bowed at #2 on last week's Billboard chart, bested only by Beyoncé's I Am ... Sasha Fierce. The first single off that album — the so-dumb-it's-brilliant "Something in Your Mouth" — is burning up rock radio (and a few feminists too), thanks to lyrics like, "I love the way you dance with anybody/ And tease them all by sucking on your thumb/ You're so much cooler when you never pull it out/ 'Cause you look so much cuter with something in your mouth." And in February, they'll launch yet another globe-spanning tour in support of the disc. You know, just business as usual for one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

"We just do it the way bands used to do it. We didn't adhere to it, we just did it. Record. Album. Go on the road. Stay on the road forever, until everyone is sick of that album. Go back to the studio and make a new album. Go on the road. That's it," Kroeger said. "We want to go back to all those towns and have those people show up and want to sing rock-and-roll songs twice as loud back at us as we are singing it to them, and that's why we keep doing what we're doing. This is a good gig. It's a lot of fun. It's every young kid's dream. ...We all just want to be rock stars and live in hilltop houses driving 15 cars."

And it's those sold-out shows — not to mention that success — that continues to befuddle Nickelback's many detractors. There is nothing many critics and bloggers would like to see more than Kroeger and company fall flat on their faces — which, of course, only makes Nickelback strive harder to get huger. Well, that and a healthy dose of humility.

"I used to have four roommates, and we used to live in this house and it just used to be a bunch of drunk kids barely getting by, trying to get enough money for beer at all times — weed and beer," Kroeger laughed. "Food was definitely low on the priority list for sure. We were just trying to get by and having the best times ever. And I always think about that. ... Oh, and what are these 'blogs' you speak of?"

They've eloped, they've returned from their honeymoon, and now, believe it or not, they're talking kids. Earlier this week, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt made their way home from their honeymoon in Mexico, and the couple said children are in their future.

Captured by TMZ's cameras as they left the airport — presumably returning from their honeymoon in Mexico — the couple was asked point-blank whether they're planning on starting a family soon.

"We are going to start it!" Heidi said, while holding hands with Pratt. "[It's the] next step!" he added.

When asked to show off their wedding bands, Spencer admitted that they're keeping them under lock and key: "We've got them locked in the safe." When asked how it feels to be married, he said simply, "It feels amazing."

Asked about their vacation, Pratt responded in true reality-TV fashion: "It's all on videotape, my friend!" he said.

The newlyweds phoned in to "The Hills: Live After Show" to confirm what MTV News exclusively reported last week: that "Hills" fans will get the chance to see the couple's elopement on the show. "Of course. Everything is always on 'The Hills,' " the groom joked.

During the call, Pratt also talked about why he felt the moment was right to marry his longtime girlfriend while they were on vacation in Mexico. "I have been trying to marry Heidi for two and a half years now. It came out of nowhere. I was like, 'This was my shot.' "

Montag recalled how emotional she got when the couple exchanged their vows. "Actually, I really started crying," she said. "My eyes just started tearing up. When you hear the love of your life just saying the most amazing, sweet things from his heart, I couldn't help it. It was the best moment in my life."

Britney Spears fans everywhere hope Tuesday (December 2) is the day their idol will show everyone that she's ready for her return to the spotlight. They came out bright and early in New York City to pick up copies of her new album, Circus.

"She never left," Blaise Lucaelli told MTV News. "She's an icon. No one does what she can do. She is her own style and her own light. Britney will always be on top. I think she's doing amazing. After the last couple of years, it's been rough on her and her fans. It's great to see her back on top. ... It's definitely going to be a #1 hit. I think it's the most innovative."

"Mannequin" appears to be the overwhelming favorite song on the album, according to our completely unscientific polling. "I like the song 'Mannequin,' " Dana Rose Carpentieri said. "I love the whole idea [of the circus theme]. I think her new stuff is a lot better than her old stuff, but I like it all. I think she's grown as an artist."

Other fans agreed that the circus theme is fitting for a person who lives her life in a world of flashing camera lights and hoards of handlers and assistants. "I think [the circus is] a good theme," superfan Jen Conley said after buying the album. "It's a good way to wrap it all up. I think it's probably going to have more meaning for her."

On their way to pick up the CD in Times Square, where Brit had just performed live for "Good Morning America," some fans said they never doubted Britney's talent. "Her albums are always great," Nicole Hoyt said. "I think she's still strong."

"I love her!" Charles Petit declared. "I just love that she knows how to be herself. She's just crazy and knows how to have fun."
