Demi Lovato will be on hand for MTV's New Year's Eve festivities to rock the night with a performance. But before the party kicks off, it seems fitting to look back on her big 2011, which wasn't just a banner year for Lovato's career, but also her personal life.

After leaving treatment in January, Lovato opened up about her issues (which included eating disorders and self-mutilation) and was on the mend. She thanked her fans for standing by her while she sought treatment and focused on getting healthy. "I can't tell you how much light you brought into my life in probably the darkest time of my life," Lovato said shortly after being released. "Without you guys I wouldn't be here today."

The former Disney princess decided to step away from her Hollywood career to focus on her pop career when she left her hit Disney show "Sonny With a Chance." " 'Sonny' was a chapter in my life I will be forever grateful for," she said in April. "Thank you all for watching."

By July, she was fully in pop-star mode, dropping not only the single for "Skyscraper" but also the equally empowering video for the stirring ballad. "I've been pretty honest," Lovato told MTV News about the track. "My whole journey has been about telling my story and hoping that when I share my story, it inspires somebody. So when I decided to come out with a single that was honest and about my journey and about standing strong and tall like a skyscraper, I hope that it inspired people.

"I thought that there was a bigger opportunity for me to come out with a song that would inspire people, rather than it be just another dance song on the radio," she added.

The song was the lead single off Unbroken, which she dropped in September. "I think it's grown-up, but it's not too grown-up," Lovato explained about the album. "It's not tasteless. It's growing up with my fans. It's [like] I'm not a kid anymore, but I'm also not a full-grown woman either. So I'm in that in-between stage, trying to figure out where that is. So I'm figuring it out, just like my fans are."

In addition to causing a stir with her own music, Lovato had everyone going crazy over her cover of Lil Wayne's "How to Love." She also performed a heartfelt rendition of the national anthem at the World Series and recently returned to the Illinois treatment center where she spent time as a guest speaker.

As the year wraps up, Lovato's fans will have a new single to look forward to, the feel-good track "Give Your Heart a Break."

Mac Miller has had a hell of a year, and the rising rap star from Pittsburgh will cap it all off in Times Square when he rings in 2012 performing on MTV's "NYE in NYC 2012," airing live at 11 p.m. ET/10 p.m. CT on December 31.

There are only a few more days left in 2011, and yes, anything can happen, but when reflecting back on the year in which he became a star, Mac has one event in particular that he considers a highlight: his November 8 debut album release and the fan reaction that landed him atop the Billboard albums chart a week later, after selling more than 144,000 copies.

"The whole album coming out was probably the #1 highlight," Mac told MTV News of his independently released Blue Slide Park. "I remember putting out the album and being really curious about what critics had to say about it because I felt like I made this album from the heart and it was by far my best work."

Unfortunately for Mac, the album reviews did not satisfy his expectations. To him, it seemed that the critics just didn't get it, and he began doubting whether or not he put out the right album. That was until his fans reassured him that he made the right move.

"All people of all different ages everywhere coming up to me and genuinely telling me how much they like the album," Mac recalled. "That's definitely the highlight, seeing this music that I've created and just seeing how much more powerful people are than publications. That's who I make music for."

Watch MTV's "NYE in NYC 2012," featuring Mac Miller, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and more, live on December 31 at 11 p.m. ET/10 p.m. CT on MTV! Head over to NYE.MTV.com for more info.

'Breaking Dawn' Reveals Make Best 'Twilight' Year Yet

'Twilight Tuesday' rounds up video of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner talking the wedding, honeymoon and being shirtless.

We knew 2011 was going to be a big year in the world of "Twilight" news. The fanbase seemed to keep growing by the hour, as did the excitement surrounding the release of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1." The release of a new "Twilight" film also meant that we'd be seeing a lot of the blockbuster franchise's superstars as they promoted the film — and, boy, was MTV News lucky with how much time we ended up spending with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and the rest of the gang this year. As such, this week's "Twilight Tuesday" is dedicated to the best and brightest of those interviews with our favorite stars.

Our first encounter with a "Twilight" star was our chat with Pattinson at the Golden Globes, during which he provided us with a giggly reaction to the first "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" still of Bella and Edward in bed, as well as his positive reviews of Stewart playing a vampire. "It's like she wanted to do it the entire time," he told us. "It's really funny, it's like a completely different environment on set when she's a vampire and when she's not. I think she's going to do it really well."

There were also plenty of teases about the film's most highly anticipated scenes, including the wedding of Edward and Bella and the honeymoon sex scene. Of seeing Stewart in a wedding dress during the filming of their characters' nuptials, Pattinson said, "She looked amazing. I really didn't do much than just stand there."

Stewart later said of the experience: "It was very, very emotional for me."

Pattinson added, "You kind of realize what the groom's position in a wedding is, which, in reality, is basically a prop. You stand there in a suit, and then everyone is looking at the girl."

One scene in which everyone was most certainly not just looking at the girl is the first sex scene between Edward and Bella on their wedding night. "I think we had some really interesting ideas about [the love scene]," Pattinson said when we caught up with him at the "Water for Elephants" press junket. "It's kind of interesting, as well, having to do it in the context of PG-13. It makes it more interesting."

Speaking to all the hype about the big moment, Pattinson said that although there was a lot of pressure to deliver some major fireworks in the scene, he was confident he'd give a convincing performance. "That's the one time I have felt like the coolest person," Pattinson admitted with a laugh. "I was like, 'This is easy!' I can fulfill people's sexual fantasy expectations without even thinking, piece of cake. That isn't acting," he joked. "The only thing [that was difficult] is the vanity aspect," Pattinson continued. "Taylor [Lautner] just ruined the whole series for me. As soon as he buffed up, I'm like, 'Well, I'm throwing in the towel' on 'New Moon.' "

Speaking of Lautner and his chiseled abs, the heartthrob told us that he had to actively campaign to director Bill Condon and the powers that be to limit his amount of shirtlessness in the film, much to the disappointment of his devoted fan following.

"I got it down to one time, one time in the movie, and it literally lasts for two seconds," Lautner said proudly of his single shirtless shot. "There was some negotiating for sure. There was more [shirtless scenes] when I read the original script, trust me," he said. "And I got it down to a very, very small amount, which I was so happy with."

Other interview highlights included the unexpected, off-the-cuff, informal moments wherein our favorite stars played ball with a few of our more-outlandish requests and questions. Case in point: When we asked Jackson Rathbone to help read off a few of the 2011 MTV Movie Awards nominees in song, which he did in good spirits and with aplomb. Then there was the "Breaking Dawn" version of the always-entertaining "Yes/No Show" with Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner.

And those are just a small collection of our favorites from 2011 alone. Only time will tell what 2012 will bring as we gear up for the "epic" conclusion to the franchise, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2." It goes without saying that we can't wait.

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Top 'Celebs Gone Good'

DoSomething.org's annual list ranks the 20 most charity-friendly stars.

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and George Clooney better have received something nice from Santa this year, because they certainly weren't on his naughty list. Those three toplined DoSomething.org's Top 20 Celebs Gone Good, the organization's annual roundup of the most charity-friendly stars in the business.

This is Gaga's second year in a row at the #1 spot. In 2011 she dedicated much of her time to putting an end to bullying and even started a new charitable organization called Born This Way. The "Marry the Night" singer did plenty more to help out those less fortunate in 2011, including auctioning off a nude sketch for charity and performing at the Bill Clinton Foundation fundraiser.

However, this was really Bieber's year to shine. He rocketed up DoSomething.org's list from #10 last year to #2 this year. It helps that Bieber donated some of his profits from his Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe, and his self-named perfume to various charitable organizations. Bieber also kept up his work with Pencils of Promise, a group that has built 41 schools in Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala and was founded by his manager's brother.

Rounding out the top five were Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio. This was a year for celeb power couples, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie clocking at #8, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore at #12 and newlyweds Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert at #14.

Other notable standouts this year were Demi Lovato at #10, Lea Michele making her charitable debut at #16, Daniel Radcliffe at #17, Miley Cyrus at #18 and Taylor Swift rounding out the list at #20.

Heavy D's Cause Of Death Announced

Rapper succumbed to pulmonary embolism, a result of a blood clot that traveled to his lung.

Though he was only 44 years old, a medical examiner has concluded that Heavy D's death last month was a result of natural causes. TMZ reported that Heavy, born Dwight Myers, died from a pulmonary embolism caused by deep vein thrombosis.

Pulmonary embolism is usually caused by a blood clot formed in the leg that eventually travels up to the lung, stopping blood flow. In most cases, the clots formed aren't deadly, but officials from L.A. County Coroner's Office also told TMZ that the rapper suffered from heart disease and that may have been a contributing factor to his death as well.

According to WebMD, common symptoms associated with pulmonary embolism are sudden shortness of breath, sharp chest pains, lightheadedness and fainting. Police reported that on November 8 they arrived at Heavy D's Beverly Hills home after a call was made to report an unconscious man. When the cops arrived, they found the rapper conscious, though he had difficulty breathing. The self-proclaimed Overweight Lover was then transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. TMZ also reported that a flight that Heavy took back from Europe after performing at a Michael Jackson tribute concert in Wales may have been a factor in his death as well. It is believed that the blood clots formed in Heavy's legs due to his prolonged immobility on the long flight.

Heavy was laid to rest on November 18. The night before his funeral, his brother Floyd Myers spoke with MTV News about his brother's health from his family's home, apparently unaware of Heavy's heart disease. "Heavy was in great shape," Myers said. "You guys seen him at the BET Awards, and he just did the tribute to Michael Jackson; they flew him out to London to do that. Heav was in good shape, healthy, no heart problems. He constantly made sure that his health was in check."

At the time, the initial autopsy report had come back inconclusive and Heavy's family, friends and fans were still searching for answers. Still, rather than speculate, Heav's brother remembered the positivity that the rapper exhibited in his life. "He loved family, and that's who he was, but it wasn't too much different from how he treated his friends and his fans," he said. "He showed everybody love and affection, and we're gonna miss that."

B.o.B, Andre 3000 'Play The Guitar' On New Single

Since B.o.B's early mixtape days, the Atlanta hitmaker drew comparisons to another ATLien. With his out-of-this-world production and rap style, Bobby Ray was at times considered a new age Andre 3000, and on the axe-wielding Bob's latest single, "Play the Guitar," fans finally get to hear the two together.

Beginning with a bluesy guitar riff and samples based on Bob Marley's 1973 classic "I Shot the Sheriff" and T.I.'s verse on Drake's "Fancy," the Salaam Remi-produced track finds B.o.B and Three Stacks flexing their rap muscles. The song, which is the next single off of Bobby Ray's upcoming Strange Clouds LP, was released Tuesday (December 27) on iTunes.

The song's hook is built around scratched-in T.I. vocals. "B.o.B plays the guitar" is brought in and out to set up Bob's opening verse. "Well it's B.o.B, flyer than a stewardess/ Fresh to death like I'm dressed for a eulogy," he raps for starters. The "Nothin' on You" MC then continues to showcase his tightly packed rap flow, reminding fans of his lyrical prowess.

Rhyming alongside the highly regarded OutKast great had to provide some sort of inspiration for the youngster, and 3000 didn't disappoint. At the top of his verse, Dre begins spitting about standing atop a Church's Chicken restaurant playing a guitar, while B.o.B stands on the roof of an adjacent Dunkin' Donuts. Yes, it is a strange way to set off a rap verse, but it's fitting for an MC who prides himself on individuality.

Andre continues his free-wheeling rhyme, spitting about everything from the advice his grandmother has given him to an Internet rumor that he plays the violin. In the end, Three Stacks leaves something for the next generation of musicians, spitting, "I encourage any child to pick up some instrument."

Just like B.o.B.

Justin Bieber Has 'It,' Mark Wahlberg Says

Mark Wahlberg surprised movie fans everywhere when he announced plans to hook up with Justin Bieber on the big screen. But when MTV News caught up with the "Contraband" star recently, he explained why he wanted to work with the teen phenom on the basketball-themed drama.

"Intuition. I'm pretty intuitive," he said of why he thinks shooting a film with the pop star is the right choice. "I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him, and it's there."

Of course, if it doesn't come easily to the rookie actor, Wahlberg has a backup plan: "It's there — and if not, I will extract it."

When MTV News caught up with Wahlberg and Bieber earlier this year at the MTV Movie Awards, they opened up a bit more about the in-the-works flick.

"Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of, like, 'The Color of Money,' " Wahlberg said of his "old guy" role. "So I get this call from Paramount [with a story about] an old guy and a young guy. I'm like, 'Cool, let's get Jack [Nicholson]. Let's get Robert De Niro. Let's get Robert Duvall.' And they go, 'What about Garrett Hedlund?' I'm like, 'For what?' " he further recalled. "They're like, 'For the young guy.' "

Bieber, who previously appeared on the big screen in his 3-D concert flick "Never Say Never," said he hopes to be on a film set by sometime next summer. And while he kept his plans hush-hush, he added that his team is "working on the script."

Our Favorite Celebrity Couples Of 2011

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 09:29 AM PST

From Britney and Jason to K-Stew and R-Pattz, we look back at the best high-profile pair-ups of the year.
By Jocelyn Vena

From young love to established romantic empires, 2011 was all about PDA. Some of La La Land's most A-list couples weren't shy about flaunting the love they share. From musicians to actors to everyone in between, the last 12 months were all about sharing the love. As the year winds down, MTV News is reflecting on some of our favorite couples of the year.

Britney Spears and Jason Trawick
The couple walked red carpets, gave each other shout-outs at awards shows and even got naked together in Britney's "Criminal" video, but it wasn't until December that they decided to make it official. After two years of dating, Spears and Trawick took their relationship to the next level, with confirmation that Jason put a ring on it. The pair celebrated their love and their impending nuptials in Las Vegas. Their engagement sparked headlines and left Spears "glowing."

Who is your top couple of 2011? Vote in our Newsroom poll!

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez
Summing up Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's year into a little blurb isn't that easy. They went to events together, and Bieber lavishly rented the Staples Center just to watch "Titanic." And when they weren't chilling out, they were giving shine to each other's hard work. Or bringing each other gifts. Remember when Bieber showed Selena his pet snake, Johnson, at the VMAs? Yes, we knew you wouldn't forget.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
The two "Twilight" stars seem poised to make our favorite couples lists for years to come. While in years past, they've remained under the radar, this year they came out of their shell and opened up about one another in interviews. Who could forget the time that K-Stew referred to her not-so-mysterious "English" boyfriend in an interview? We're assuming not R-Pattz.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z
OK, so Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been together for, like, an eternity, but it wasn't until this year that the pair really had everyone buzzing. When Beyoncé stepped out at the VMAs, her expanding midsection and flashy performance was the ultimate pregnancy announcement. Jay-Z didn't seem to mind all the attention. He celebrated the baby news in the audience with his pal Kanye West.

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose
Amber Rose rebounded from her relationship with Kanye West by falling in love with Wiz Khalifa. The couple took the world on their wild relationship ride, from doing interviews together to sparking rumors that they had tied the knot. These two kept everyone talking and they don't seem to mind the attention, or spending lots of time with one another.

Fabolous Will 'Evolve' On <i>Loso's Way 2</i>

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 11:17 PM PST

'Musically, everything I do, I want to keep growing,' rapper tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

Fabolous

Now that Fabolous has killed off his competition with Christmas mixtape There Is No Competition 3: Death Comes in 3s, the Brooklyn MC is fast at work on his sixth studio album, Loso's Way 2.

"Loso's Way 2 is a work-in-process. I put a lot in my mixtapes, but I definitely put a lot into my albums as well," Fab told MTV News, referencing the DJ Drama-helmed TINC 3 and the upcoming album. "I know a lot of people like mixtape Fab, and albums, to me, you're speaking to a broader audience sometimes. I take that at hand. I guess everybody doesn't see that."

Since his rise in the late 1990s on DJ Clue's street mixtapes, Fab has carved a niche as a witty lyricist, thanks to his clever punch lines and lyrics. It's a style that he expertly employs on each of his mixtapes, but when the "Make Me Better" MC gets into album mode, he has a different focus.

"With the album, I'm looking to evolve as well. Musically, everything I do, I want to keep growing," he said. "I think people have seen my growth album to album. From Ghetto Fabolous to Street Dreams to Real Talk to From Nothin' to Somethin' to Loso's Way, and now they will continue to see that with Loso's Way 2."

It wasn't that Fab lacked substance in any of his previous works. On each of his LPs he included a vast array of topics, packaging party anthems, love songs and story rhymes. But while many of the top MCs like Eminem, Kanye West and at times Jay-Z began to open up about their personal lives, the largely private Loso remained so.

Fab began to change things in 2009 when he released Loso's Way. The #1 LP was anchored by Fabolous-style radio hits like "Throw It in the Bag" and "Everything, Everyday, Everywhere," but the nimble-tongued MC also exhibited welcome artistic growth when he rapped about his love for his son Johan on the Marsha Ambrosius-assisted "Stay."

"It's all a process for me; I'm in a different place," he said. "My last album I was having my first son and now my son is almost 4 years old, so these are processes and you get to talk about those things. I will share them on the next album."

Since releasing "Stay," Fab has seen much more of his personal life spill out into reality shows and the tabloids. His son's mother, Emily Bustamante, is a star on VH1's "Love & Hip Hop" and has been sharing tidbits of her and Fab's relationship on the show. The rapper is not a fan. "It's just not my cup of tea," Fabolous told New York radio host Angie Martinez on her Hot 97 show earlier this month. "It's one side of what's going on. I don't bash it, but I'm not really in support of it, either. I don't think it depicts me the way I am. It just depicts a one-sided version of what's going on."

Fab's feelings about the show won't deter him from opening up on Loso's Way 2. "Children change a lot of stuff in your life," he said to MTV News. "They change the way you look at things and do things. And I think the music will reflect that, too."

Are you looking forward to Loso's Way 2? Tell us in the comments!

'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo': Why It Didn't Dominate

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 09:17 AM PST

Experts explain to MTV News why the best-selling book didn't translate to a box-office #1.
By Eric Ditzian

Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy of crime thrillers has sold about 17 million copies in the United States alone. The first novel in the series, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," is the first book ever to sell a million digital copies. The books have become nothing short of cultural touchstones, the collective response of devoted fans to the uninitiated being something along the lines of "You haven't read 'Dragon Tattoo'? What's wrong with you?"

That's the entertainment scene onto which David Fincher's American adaptation of "Dragon Tattoo" came last week. What's more, the movie received strong critical reviews, Sony's marketing campaign was lauded by industry insiders and MTV named it the Best Movie of 2011. Yet "Dragon Tattoo" wound up with a six-day gross of just $27.8 million — the highest total of any new release but good for just fourth place overall and undoubtedly disappointing given its lofty pedigree.

So what happened?

"Maybe fans of the Stieg Larsson novel were satisfied by last year's Swedish film and weren't feeling David Fincher's Hollywood version," writes Deadline editor in chief Nikki Finke, who notes the weak opening is especially surprising given the film was the only rated-R wide-release over the Christmas season and that "adults are flocking to specialty box-office hits like Fox Searchlight's 'The Descendants' and the Weinstein Co's 'The Artist.' "

The release date could also have been a factor, even as Sony positioned "Dragon Tattoo" as the "feel-bad movie of Christmas." "The dark and violent subject matter coupled with intense competition for the attention of mature adults led to an underwhelming result over the happy and cheery yuletide holiday," says Gitesh Pandya, editor of Box Office Guru.

With no wide releases slated for the upcoming weekend, however, "Dragon Tattoo" could see its box-office haul grow significantly. Sony's distribution chief, Rory Bruer, told TheWrap that the film "is off to a good start and it's just going to get better with every day through the rest of the holiday season and well into the new year."

Finke, too, expects the film's B.O. numbers to pick up this week, and Pandya suggests "a domestic final of $100 million cannot be ruled out this early in the run as moviegoers continue to catch up on films they are interested in."

That's good news for fans of the series and of Fincher's film, who have their fingers crossed that the Oscar-nominated director gets the go-ahead to make the final two pictures in Larsson's series. As Fincher told us recently, he hopes that the first film is received well enough that he's able to revisit, in journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander, "two fascinating characters who I have really come to care about."

In the end, though, the chance to see Fincher's adaptations of "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" might be entirely out of the hands — or, rather, the wallets — of American moviegoers. "Ironically, the biggest factor in this sequelizing or not will come down to how well it does in foreign market — a place where the Swedish version of the film already made nearly $100 million just a couple years ago," said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. "Do overseas audiences really want to see the Hollywood version after the original is so fresh in their minds and was equally well-received?"

Check out everything we've got on "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

Taylor Lautner 'Out & Proud' <i>People</i> Cover A Fake

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 08:07 AM PST

Fabricated cover touts an exclusive interview with the 'Twilight' actor about his sexuality.
By Gil Kaufman

The fake Taylor Lautner <i>People</i> magazine cover

The January 7 cover of People magazine that touts an exclusive interview with "Twilight" star Taylor Lautner about his sexuality is a fake.

The mocked-up cover hit the Web on Monday and instantly raised eyebrows with its claims of an exclusive story titled "Out & Proud." A spokesperson for People confirmed to GossipCop.com that the cover — complete with other celeb images that are five years old — is "absolutely fake" but would not comment further when contacted by MTV News.

The Internet joke that began with a Twitter post comes just a few months after GQ Australia was forced to issue an apology to the actor after he took issue with a line of questioning in the interview. The actor was asked whether he was hit on during a meeting with director Gus Van Sant and "Milk" writer Dustin Lance Black, who are both openly gay.

"It's not a coincidence that there was a writer, a director and an actor at dinner," Lautner told GQ about the professional meal. "No, definitely not. I think they know I'm straight. But they're great guys. They're a lot of fun."

Days after the interview made its way online, Black took to his blog to weigh in on the magazine's line of questioning. "Really Mr. GQ writer? I'm curious, will you be asking all of the handsome actors I've ever had the privilege of working with or meeting if I made passes at them as well?" he wrote. "I'd love to be there when you ask Sean Penn that same question. Or, Mr. GQ writer, were you projecting your own unprofessional desires onto me and Gus? Perhaps? Or worse still, are you a homophobe?

"Above and beyond this clear attack on my character, I'm shocked that GQ would allow their writer to lean on the scurrilous, outdated stereotype that gay men are by nature sexual predators," he continued. "I mean, would you have asked this same question if it were Diablo Cody and Kathryn Bigelow at dinner with Mr. Lautner? Leaning on lies, myths and stereotypes about gay people is hateful, harmful and outdated."

The combination of the blowback from Black and other Internet commenters forced the magazine to issue an apology on its Facebook page.

"We've seen some of the comments floating around regarding our recent interview with Taylor Lautner and apologise if anyone was offended by anything in the article. It certainly wasn't our intention to paint anyone in the story as a sexual predator," the statement reads. "The point we were actually trying to push was that Taylor is irresistible to virtually everyone — regardless of sexuality or gender. Hence the film crew cheering at his shirtless scenes while shooting 'Twilight,' and Mark Wahlberg deeming him better looking than Leonardo DiCaprio."

Amy Winehouse: We Bid Farewell To A Titanic Talent In 2011

Singer's death at age 27 and the comeback that never was is our #10 Newsmaker of the year.
By Gil Kaufman

If I had gone to journalism school, I'm sure one of the first things they would have taught me would have been to remain objective in my reporting and not get too emotionally involved in the subjects I cover.

But, just like the deaths of Kurt Cobain, Aaliyah and Sublime's Brad Nowell, I cared more than was probably professionally prudent when I found out that Amy Winehouse had died.

I didn't personally know Winehouse, had never interviewed her and had only seen her perform a few times. But something about her titanic talent spoke to me, almost as much as the fascination I (and all of us, I suspect) had about her madcap, edge-of-a-knife life. We love reading (and writing) about the chaos of stars' lives because it allows us to live vicariously through the insanity they reap from the safety and security of our by-comparison tame lives.

We shook our heads when she had that disastrous show in Belgrade in June, fearing that it meant we would have to wait even longer for her forever-gestating follow-up to her 2006 breakthrough second album, Back to Black.

The news Winehouse had made since her 2008 Back to Black Grammy triumph was mostly bad — arrests, drug possession, punch-ups, divorce, rehab, canceled shows — but her pugnacious attitude and promise kept us interested. I was pulling for her because I know all too well from experience how this one usually ends. There was a part of me that couldn't wait for Winehouse to defy the critics and stage a triumphant comeback that would surprise and delight us all over again.

Once she passed, though, we paid tribute the only way we know how, with essays about her importance to music, shout-outs from contemporary acolytes like Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj (and the cast of "Glee"), a look back at her career highlights on MTV and as much information as we could give you about the details of her death. (That enduring interest in Winehouse's legacy became the #10 Top Newsmaker of 2011.)

We wondered if there would be more music from the singer who'd only managed two studio albums before her death, measured her influence beyond "Rehab" and dug up every bit of tape we had to shed more light on her creative process.

Because I wondered it myself, we also asked experts if sudden fame had crushed the fragile, troubled singer. And we told you everything we could about the VMA tribute to her featuring Bruno Mars and Russell Brand.

Once her cause of death was revealed, the first question that needed to be answered was, "how is that even possible?" And when details were revealed about her first posthumous album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, we spoke to everyone we could about the tracks, fearing it might be the last we'd hear from this suddenly silenced voice.

We were as sad as you were, but we kept it together to bring you the news. Well, almost.

In a Newsroom post, I reminisced about the first time I saw Winehouse perform, at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, in March 2007. I dug through the tens of thousands of pictures in my iPhoto folder to find the series of shots I'd snapped of her from just a few feet away at her Stateside debut. I remembered how blown away I was by the enormous, tear-stained sound coming from this tiny woman.

I wrote about how I sometimes reveled in reporting on her bad behavior. But mostly, I admitted that like a lot of you, I'm just sad we won't have Amy around anymore.

How did Amy Winehouse's death affect you? Share your thoughts below.

Rihanna Goes It Alone In 'You Da One' Video

Singer mugs for camera in a variety of glamorous looks in Melina Matsoukas-directed clip.

Rihanna might be singing about someone special on "You Da One," but the video is all about the singer. For the second clip off her Talk That Talk album, the singer once again worked with Melina Matsoukas, who also directed her provocative, swirling "We Found Love" video.

Unlike her "We Found Love" video, the "You Da One" clip has no real story. Instead, it is a series of glamour shots and artsy finishes, ranging from the lyrics of the song floating across the screen in a variety of fonts to Ri's mouth (including her previously teased grill) flashing across the screen. The pop star mugs it up for the camera, allowing the track to shine.

The singer channels everyone from 1960s fashion icon and Andy Warhol muse Twiggy to "A Clockwork Orange" leading man Alex DeLarge for the many looks of the video, which include platinum cropped wigs, suspenders, bowler hats and body-hugging catsuits. Dancing and slinking around the giant warehouse setting, Rihanna doesn't seem to be performing for anyone but the camera.

The video's auteur, Matsoukas, had glowing words for the video on Twitter. "This sh-- is pretty punk and irreverent," she wrote. "This bitch @rihanna can pull off anything ... Even on negative sleep ..." Ri's response? Simply an "XOXO."

In the lead-up to the holiday release, Rihanna teased fans about the video in a series of behind-the-scenes videos and stills. "We're in London town!" the chart-topper tells the cameraman in a behind-the-scenes video released last week, while the Dr. Luke-produced track plays in the background.

"We tried to shoot our first setup outside, but it started to rain really, really hard. Then it stopped after we had to switch setups. ...I'm running on one hour of sleep. I'm not even going to remember this tomorrow. My eyes are burning a little bit."

The soundtrack to "The Hunger Games"
will feature a bumper crop of new and unreleased songs by Taylor Swift, the Arcade Fire and the Decemberists.

The album will be produced by Grammy-winning producer T Bone Burnett and released before the movie hits theaters on March 23. Burnett and the group the Civil Wars got together to write an original tune for the CD with Swift, the first single, "Safe and Sound," which was released to iTunes on December 23. The tune shot to #1 on the iTunes singles list within 24 hours of release.

Also serving up fresh tracks are the Arcade Fire, who collaborated with Burnett on "Horn of Plenty," and the Decemberists, who've offered up the original song "One Engine." The rest of the lineup has not been released, but according to a press release the soundtrack will feature all new songs based on themes that figure into the movie's storyline.

Oscar-winning composer Danny Elfman recently exited the film, citing scheduling issues as he works to finish up the music for "Dark Shadows" and "Men in Black 3." He was replaced by James Newton Howard, who is responsible for dozens of famous scores, including "Batman Begins."

Inspired by the best-selling young-adult novel by Suzanne Collins, "The Hunger Games" follows the path of 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who is chosen to compete in a vicious televised tournament in which 24 teenagers from a post-apocalyptic society fight to the death for the entertainment of the masses. The film also stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, as well as Woody Harrelson and rocker Lenny Kravitz.

Lawrence will not only star in the movie, but she will also lend her vocals
to the soundtrack. Producer Burnett had high praise for her singing, telling MTV it was "beautiful. She did great. She's singing great. Killer actor too."

Fans are totally geeked about the new big-screen adaptation that could be the next-generation "Twilight" series, which is why we put together our list of the top 10 "Games" moments of 2011.

John Legend is officially off the market. The singer asked his girlfriend, Chrissy Teigen, to marry him over the holidays.

The couple confirmed the news in a statement to People. "John Legend and his girlfriend, model Chrissy Teigen, got engaged over the holidays while vacationing in the Maldives," a rep confirmed.

People reports that while little else is known about how they celebrated the good news, Legend will be in Las Vegas this weekend performing at the Pearl at the Palms on New Year's Eve.

"We validate or shut down whatever each of us is doing," Legend told People in May about how the pair help style one another. "[It's] all of the time. We were together when we picked out our clothes today. She's better [at it]. It's harder to dress a woman — there are so many options and accessories. For guys we only have so many elements."

The couple began dating in 2007. Teigen is best known for her work as a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. It's a big week for Legend, who will also celebrate his birthday Wednesday.

Legend and Teigen weren't the only pair who got engaged over the holidays: Matthew McConaughey popped the question to his model girlfriend, Camila Alves, on Christmas Day. He took to Twitter to share the good news. "Just asked camila to marry me, merry Christmas," he tweeted, also posting a photo of him and Alves kissing next to Christmas decorations.

Van Halen fans got the best Christmas present of all over the weekend when the legendary Los Angeles rockers confirmed the long-standing rumor that they will be reuniting for a tour with original madcap lead singer David Lee Roth.

The announcement came via a video released on Monday on the band's official site in which the 57-year-old Roth is seen unleashing some of his classic high-kicking stage moves alongside his former bandmates guitarist Eddie Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen, as well as the group's current bass player, Eddie's son, Wolfgang.

Photos: Van Halen's early years.

The black and white video shows the band mugging along to their iconic hits "Jump," "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher" amid a shower of confetti and balloons on a club stage. The easy camaraderie belies the infamously testy relationship between Eddie Van Halen and Roth, as the pair seem to be getting along as they run around the stage of the Roxy Theatre on L.A.'s legendary Sunset Strip.

The site promises that the first tickets for the reunion tour will go on sale on January 10.

Van Halen's original bass player and backing vocalist, Michael Anthony, was booted from the band in 2006 after 32 years and replaced by teenager Wolfgang. After parting ways with Roth in 1985, Van Halen rebooted with singer Sammy Hagar in 1985, enjoying a string of hit albums and songs through 1996, when Hagar was shown the door and briefly replaced by former Extreme singer Gary Cherone, who only lasted three years in the slot. After bringing Hagar back in from 2003 to 2005, Van Halen invited Roth back into the fold several years ago and toured with him in 2007 and 2008.

In addition to the tour, the group are working on their first album of new material with Roth in 27 years. They recently signed to Interscope Records after spending their entire career on Warner Bros. Records.

Tom Cruise 'Impossible' To Beat At Box Office

'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' easily wins #1 spot over long holiday weekend.
By Ryan J. Downey

This Christmas, Tom Cruise was "impossible" to beat at the box office.

"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" was the #1 movie over the long holiday weekend, easily beating competition from two competing sequels with an additional $46.2 million as it expanded into wide release. The fourth entry in the Tom Cruise franchise, this one directed by Brad Bird ("The Incredibles"), has racked up $78.6 million in domestic receipts since it debuted in limited release 11 days ago.

"Ghost Protocol" is the best-reviewed entry in the franchise, which kicked off in 1996 with an inaugural film (based on the popular late '60s TV series) directed by Brian De Palma ("Scarface"). Action maestro John Woo ("The Killer") helmed "M:I 2" four years later. The J.J. Abrams-directed "Mission: Impossible III" grossed $134 million during its theatrical run in 2006.

Meanwhile, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" was reviewed far less favorably than its 2009 predecessor. The film, which reunites Robert Downey Jr. in the title role with Jude Law as his faithful partner, Watson, was #2 at the box office with $31.8 million for a two-week total of $90.6 million. "Downey may think this interpretation is an insight, or funny, but it pushes what was already a rude rewriting of the classic characters into eye-rolling camp," wrote the Newark Star Ledger. The first film sits at 70 percent on film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer," while "Game of Shadows" was at a "rotten" 59 percent at press time.

The #3 movie at the box office, itself the third in a series, continues a franchise-long tradition of poor reviews. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" carried a series worst 13 percent score on the "Tomatometer" as it collected $20 million for an 11-day $56.9 million total. Neither "Game of Shadows" nor "Shipwrecked" appear likely to get anywhere near the $200 million grosses of their predecessors.

Four of the other five new releases in theaters were from major filmmakers.

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the highly anticipated American adaptation of the popular Swedish book from director David Fincher ("Fight Club"), has made $27.7 million since it opened Tuesday night. Steven Spielberg has two new movies out, "The Adventures of Tintin" and "War Horse," which landed at #5 and #7 on the box office chart, respectively. "Tintin" has made $24.1 million while "War Horse" has made $15 million. The latest from director Cameron Crowe opened even lower than his last movie, "Elizabethtown." "We Bought a Zoo," at #6, earned just $15.6 million despite star power in the form of Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. Rock journalist turned filmmaker Crowe has worked with box-office topper Tom Cruise twice: first with "Jerry Maguire" in 1996 and later with "Vanilla Sky" in 2001.

Finally, alien invasion horror flick "The Darkest Hour" opened at #8 with just $5.5 million. The film was not screened in advance for critics, but The Hollywood Reporter, which reviewed the movie, blamed a "flatlining screenplay and the absence of even a single compelling character."

Two kids and nearly six years later, Matthew McConaughey popped the question to his longtime lady love, model Camila Alves, over the holiday weekend. Her answer? A big yes! The actor confirmed the engagement on Twitter.

"Just asked camila to marry me, merry Christmas," he tweeted on Christmas Day, also posting a photo of him and Alves kissing next to Christmas decorations. The couple have a 3-year-old son, Levi, and a daughter, Vida, who turns 2 next month.

In the March issue of Esquire, the actor gushed about his bride-to-be. "Before this, I had a super home in the Hollywood Hills that I did by myself — landscaping, detailing pretty much everything. But that house was mine. And yeah, we coulda gone in there right away. Camila would have said, 'Fine, don't change a thing.' But I thought, 'I found the woman I wanna do it with, the woman I wanna make a family with, hopefully live our life out together.' She needs to have 50 percent of that," he said. "I mean, it's a lot easier for me to be at 100 percent. I'd always been 100 percent. It's braver for me at 50 percent."

In September 2008, McConaughey opened up to People about Alves, calling her "the love of my life." The two began dating in 2006. "I always wanted to be a father and thought it would be great, but it just took the right woman and the right time to make it all happen," he said. "We're a family now. I see the future and it's clearer to me now. Walking around with this cool responsibility all the time, it's a wonderful thing."
