As we continue our weeklong look back on the year in music — MTV kicked things off on Monday with a list of the Best EDM Artists of 2011 — it was hard not to notice that the biggest stars in pop, rock and hip-hop put on some of their most buzzed-about performances — right on our stages.

From Adele's spine-tingling ballad at the VMAs to Two Door Cinema Club's rendition of the rollicking "What You Know" at Webster Hall, we culled 16 of the best performances of the last 12 months and you, the fans, voted for your favorites. Here, we present #10 to #3. Stay with us as we reveal who walked away with the top spots at 4:59 p.m. ET on MTV!

10. Odd Future, "Sandwitches," mtvU Woodie Awards
Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All Loiter Squad, or Odd Future, for short, were one of this year's breakthrough acts. And when they hit the stage for this year's mtvU Woodie Awards, it was clear why. The performance started out tame enough. Tyler, the Creator's "Yonkers" kicked in and a little person impersonating Tyler approached the stage. The calm didn't last long, though, as the real Wolf Haley emerged and confronted the pint-size imposter. From that moment on, the raw, rambunctious, rabid energy that got OF noticed took over as Tyler, Hodgy Beats and the rest of the group launched into an unforgettable performance of "Sandwitches." — Steven Roberts

9. Adele, "Someone Like You," VMAs
Some artists surround themselves with dozens of dancers, seizure-inducing banks of flashing lights and other tricks when they take the stage. But when it comes to Adele's take on the heartbreaking second single from 21 at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, all it took was a grand piano, a single spotlight and some emotive hand gestures. Perfect. — Gil Kaufman

8. Jack's Mannequin, "Release Me," Buzzworthy Live
It doesn't get much more epic than a stripped-down performance right above Times Square. Andrew McMahon of Jack's Mannequin did exactly that with his ode to growing up and settling down, "Release Me," for Buzzworthy's special live series. It's just McMahon, his shades and a piano, and we don't need much else. — Kevin P. Sullivan

7. Chris Brown, "Yeah 3X/ Beautiful People," VMAs
The white suit, the swagger, the strobing VMA stage and some gravity-defying aerial tricks are what defined Breezy's jaw-dropping dance clinic at this year's VMAs. His high-stepping kung fu waltz through Wu-Tang Clan, head-banging ode to Nirvana and mid-air flips again showed that Brown is at his best on an awards-show stage. — G.K.

6. Lil Wayne, "Nightmares of the Bottom," MTV2 "Unplugged"
For his MTV2 "Unplugged" debut in June, Birdman Jr. took the stage wearing a black sweatshirt, black sunglasses and a red fitted baseball cap. Backed by a full band, Wayne launched into his catalog of hits, taking the crowd to musical heights. But one highlight in particular was the MC's premiere of "Nightmares of the Bottom," an instant smash-in-the-making that details Wayne's rise to the top and unwillingness to fail. — Rob Markman

5. Two Door Cinema Club, "What You Know," New York
To say it was a big year for Two Door Cinema Club, the indie-rock group out of Northern Ireland, would be an enormous understatement. The band toured the U.S. for the first time, opening for Tokyo Police Club, and debuted on the American alternative charts with "What You Know." Two Door Cinema played the song at an MTV Hive-hosted performance at the Studio at Webster Hall. The screaming NYC fans seemed to approve. — K.S.

4. Beyoncé, VMAs
At this year's MTV Video Music Awards, Beyoncé hit the stage in a sparkly tux and a glowing smile that never faded as — in typical Sasha Fierce fashion — she worked the crowd. From the effervescent single "Love on Top" (from her critically acclaimed 4) to her nod to the Motown era, the performance was ebullient. But it was the very last moment in her set that ensured it would go down in the VMA annals. Mrs. Carter, with a little hip-hop swagger, dropped the mic, opened her jacket and revealed an adorable baby bump. Leave it to the Queen B to rock the house, make headlines and set Twitter records all at once. — Andrea Duncan-Mao

3. Mac Miller, "Knock Knock," Chicago
Mac Miller's live performance of "Knock Knock" in Chicago is a pretty good peek at what you're in for at one of his concerts: very little gravity, a lot of movement and fans who could easily understudy for the rapper because they know every word to every track. And it's the Pittsburgh 19-year-old's pumped-up, feel-good presence that helped him land on another coveted list this year: MTV News' Hottest Breakthrough MC contest. — Rya Backer

We've counted down #10 to #3, but will 30 Seconds to Mars' "Unplugged" set or Paramore's performance at the Fueled by Ramen celebration come out on top in the final two? Stick with us as we reveal the Best Live MTV Performance of 2011 at 4:59 p.m. ET on MTV!

Robyn 'Surprised' By Grammy Nominations

As Swedish pop sensation Robyn wraps up 2011, there are a few accolades she still can't quite believe she bagged by year's end. One of those highlights was being the "Saturday Night Live" musical guest this past weekend, and another was being nominated not once, but twice, for a Grammy.

Robyn is up for Best Dance/Electronica Album for Body Talk Pt. 3 (one of several installments from the Body Talk album cycle she launched in 2010), as well as Best Dance Recording for the album's swirling "Call Your Girlfriend."

"I'm excited about the fact that I'm on this show ['SNL'] and the fact that I've been Grammy-nominated two times for this last part of Body Talk at a point where I'm like, 'I thought I was done with this album,' " she explained to MTV News last week during "SNL" rehearsals. "I did my last show at the Hollywood Bowl a month ago, and I didn't expect to still be working and promoting this piece of music, so I'm very excited to end the year in this way.

"I was surprised that I was nominated for two [Grammys]," she later added. "That's a really nice thing for me; whether I win or not [is] not the important thing. It's about being nominated and being in that group of people that gets the chance to win it. So, I'm cool."

In addition to still getting Grammy love for Body Talk, Robyn is also looking ahead at what's next. And, yes, Robyn fans, that does include new tunes. "I'm going to go back into the studio soon, maybe next year, with this great feeling of ending the album this way," she explained, before adding that she still has no idea how her next release will sound.

"I'm trying to not think about working at the moment," she said. "After ['SNL'], I'm going to go home to Sweden and celebrate Christmas with my family and just take some time off and think about other things other than music for a while and reboot, eat food, sleep."

'Twilight' Fans Keep Busy Until 'Breaking Dawn - Part 2'

Fans tells 'Twilight' Tuesday how they're passing the time until the November 2012 release of the final film.

As anyone who has eagerly anticipated the arrival of a film, book, TV show or album knows, waiting can be painful. Such is the case for the very dedicated "Twilight" fans, who have nearly a full year to wait until "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" is released in theaters.

For this installment of "Twilight" Tuesday, MTV News asked Twilighters how they're passing the time from now until November 16, 2012, and keeping their obsessions alive. They did not disappoint and came up with some solid, creative plans.

Our friends at Twilight Lexicon offered a shout-out to Internet stars/comedic sister duo Hannah and Hilly Hindi's "The Hillywood Show," who recently reached their goal of raising $10,000 to produce a "Breaking Dawn" parody. "Looking forward to the @HillywoodShow Breaking Dawn parody. They raised 10K to do it," the Lexicon tweeted.

Others suggested re-watching "Twilight," "New Moon" "Eclipse" and "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" and re-reading Stephenie Meyer's books that inspired it all.

"@Twilight movie marathons, re-reading the books for my 6th time and of course twitter :)," wrote Jimena Martinez.

Sarah M., who is one of the lovely ladies behind the Kristen Stewart's Hot Bodyguard Facebook page, seems to be developing a budget so she can come to Los Angeles next year for the premiere and camp out again in Tent City.

"Work, work, work to save $ for Tent City 2012 and hoping for some #SWATH promos/premieres w/ Kristen & @KStewsHBG :)," Sarah tweeted, referring to Stewart's other big movie, "Snow White and the Huntsman."

The most creative planning goes to Brooke Lockhart, who had these humorous suggestions for how to pass the time. "Watch all the B list character's awful movies," she tweeted, adding: "Live in Hot Topic. Pick a side in the robsten vs. nonsten epic battle."

Then there's a few who might — gasp! — take a break from it all.

"Finally sleep & save money 4 my 20+ viewings of #BD2," superfan TwiSherry revealed, adding later that she'll be reading again too: "Read FanFic to fill in the 'fade to black' moments." Sounds like a good idea!

Also, if these suggestions don't tickle your fancy, James Franco wrote a review of "Breaking Dawn - Part 1," which is a nice meaty read that should take some time to get through.

What do you think, "Twilight" fans? How are you spending the time from now until the release of "Breaking Dawn-Part 2"? Let us know in the comments or tweet me @karawarner!

Lady Gaga Doesn't Take Credit For EDM Explosion

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 03:04 AM PST

'I was just one of a few artists at a certain sort of time in radio where more dance music was being played on top 40,' she tells MTV News.

Lady Gaga burst on the scene in 2008 declaring that the world should "Just Dance." From there, everyone kind of did.

A few years back, the pop star was one of the few singers infusing mainstream pop records with electronic dance music influences. In the years since her breakthrough, Gaga's use of the musical form has certainly gotten darker and more in-depth, especially on 2011's Born This Way.

These days, she's hardly in the minority. EDM is all over pop and urban radio. Performers like Rihanna, Usher, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj are working with some of the top EDM producers and DJs in the game, some of whom MTV has recognized as the Best EDM Artists of 2011, churning out chart-topping, genre-busting tunes.

When MTV News caught up with the Mother Monster earlier this month in L.A., she weighed in on 2011's EDM/pop explosion, noting that she was hardly the main factor in the recent blast of crossover hits.

"I think that radio has had the biggest influence on the rise of electronic dance music," she said. "I was just one of a few artists at a certain sort of time in radio where more dance music was being played on top 40, but I'm not the person to thank for that. The people to thank for that are at KIIS-FM and at the other stations around the country who gave dance music a chance."

Not only is radio taking note, but also the whole music industry. Just last month, EDM star Skrillex was nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy, the first DJ recognized in that category ever. Gaga thinks there's still room for growth.

"I think we have some more work to do, especially with the different academies that honor music," she said. "I think that dance music should also be credited as pop music where it's due and vice versa, the way that country and pop is, the way that R&B and pop are. So we still have a ways to go, but it's moving in a wonderfully fast and interesting direction."

Skrillex Is MTV's EDM Artist Of 2011!

DJ/producer cements his breakthrough year with five Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist.

Back in late 2010, EDM superstar DJ/producer deadmau5 told MTV News a star was on the rise. He said his friend and former post-hardcore/emo rocker Sonny Moore — producing and performing under the name Skrillex — was going to be a force to be reckoned with.

"He's taking over — I think he's going to outdo me," deadmau5 told MTV News at the time. "I think he's going to be the first artist on Beatport to eat my lunch and take over the top 10. I don't think anyone in Beatport history has ever done it, but if he does it, I'll be so proud of him, the little goblin!"

Now, the ever-prophetic 'mau5 has more to be proud of. A lot more. In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV's roundtable has named Skrillex the #1 EDM Artist of 2011, underscored by his most recent series of accolades: He scored a whopping five Grammy nominations, including being the first DJ to land a Best New Artist nod.

Indeed, Moore's musical background — both on his own and as a member of his former group, From First to Last — has carried over into Skrillex's brand of fiery electronica. Skrillex has garnered an audience the world over that includes ravers, house heads and rockers alike. In today's laptop generation of music, Skrillex is the new "rock."

From his remix of Benny Benassi and Gary Go's "Cinema" to the recent Avicii pop song "Le7els" (not officially released yet), Skrillex dropped massive re-workings in '11, in addition to his More Monsters and Sprites EP. He scored video games, produced records for Korn, launched his own OWSLA label and hit almost every major festival in the States, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. An exceptional catalog of releases coupled with an incessant touring schedule has made Skrillex the biggest EDM star of the year. In 2012, he plans to tour 322 of the 365 days.

While he didn't expect to become recognized as this year's biggest success story, Skrillex's peers say the swell of critical and fan support is fitting.

"He definitely deserves it," former OWSLA tourmate, DJ/producer Porter Robinson, told MTV News. "I've been saying it all year: He's the most influential musician of this year, in any genre. Incredible sound designer. Incredible songwriter. Amazing performer."

"He's been in bands before," EDM artist and collaborator Sofi told us. "He's an excellent songwriter. He can sing. He's just so versatile that I think that comes through in his music. He kind of brought this 'rock,' 'raw' element into electronic music. He's the punk rock of the new generation."

Even industry veteran David Guetta, who lands at #2 on our list of the Best EDM Artists of 2011, agreed with all the praise heaped on Skrillex.

"He's extremely talented, and I'm very happy for him," Guetta said of Skrill's Grammy noms. "It's a statement: I think it's really good that an artist from our community is nominated just as 'an artist.' Not as a 'dance' artist, you know? I think that it's good that [our] music is now getting the attention and the respect that all the other styles of music, like hip-hop, are getting."

MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV's Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage.

Will 'Star Trek' Sequel Include Khan?

Actor Simon Pegg and producer Bryan Burk talk to MTV News about the infamous villain and other details.

The dedicated fan following of J.J. Abrams knows that the talented writer/director is great at keeping secrets — particularly when those secrets revolve around the highly anticipated and heavily guarded "Star Trek" sequel. And while a few details have started to emerge about the 2013 release, including cast additions (like Alice Eve) and villain speculation, we don't know much.

When MTV News caught up with Simon Pegg and producer Bryan Burk when they were promoting "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," we asked what they know so far and if they'd seen or heard any official talk about Khan, the rumored fan-favorite villain.

Pegg swore he doesn't know anything about new characters that have joined the story, but he does know that his Scotty will have a particularly creative sex scene.

"There is a large group sex scene with Scotty and some green chicks. That's all I know; that's all I've been told. It was a sweetener," he joked. "That was my condition for doing the film."

While Pegg assured us that what he had read of the script is, in fact, really "good," he knows nothing about Khan.

"I haven't heard the name Khan come up. Not to say it won't come up, but I have heard no mention of him whatsoever," he said. "He is a great villain. I don't want to say too much and then have to eat my words as I often do, but we've seen Khan [in a 'Trek' movie before]. To see him again, how much value is there in that? I don't know."

Burk was equally coy about the superhuman tyrant's place in "Trek 2."

"There are amazing villains all throughout the 'Star Trek' universe as well as new villains," he said when asked for his thoughts on whether Khan belongs in the new film. "As we did in the last film, there's a lot of directions you can go with the film. In this case, we chose to do something we thought would be original and unique and different, and I think on paper, we made the right choice. Now we have to go shoot."

Burk also promised that the second film will pick up where things left off.

"Unlike the last film, where we were restarting and setting up the characters ... we're going to jump right back in, and we don't have to set up everybody and we can go right in it," he explained. "We're kind of in a mad dash at the beginning of the film. In all of our conversation, we reference a lot of our favorite films and how 'Empire Strikes Back' was spectacular and how they were able to pick up and keep going."

Abrams' "Star Trek" sequel starts shooting in 3-D in January and is scheduled to be released May 17, 2013.

LMFAO's 'Party Rock Anthem' A 'Big Thing' In 2011

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 03:29 AM PST

'I think for some of the critics, being #1 for six weeks in a row on the Billboard, people said, 'Now this is a real thing,' ' Redfoo tells MTV News.

To say 2011 has been a big year for LMFAO is an understatement. They released their second album, Sorry for Party Rocking, in June, and from that album came the fist-pumping megahit "Party Rock Anthem." The #1 song, from the electro-pop duo of Redfoo and SkyBlu, got all music genres (and dancing hamsters) to band together for some excessive party rocking.

"Party Rock Anthem" achieved serious success in 2011, staying at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for six straight weeks and becoming the seventh song to spend at least 25 weeks in the top 10. It also came in at the #2 for the best-selling single of the year on iTunes, topped only by Adele's "Rolling in the Deep."

The video for "Party Rock Anthem" caused a movement all its own, showing everyone how to shuffle and garnering more than 314 million YouTube views. Now they're outdoing themselves with their latest single, "Sexy and I Know It," which has reached #1 on the iTunes chart.

MTV News caught up with Redfoo at Z100's Jingle Ball concert on Friday, and he explained how the success of their chart-topping single has had such an impact on their career.

"I think it just brought us into the households via the video, and it just got everybody more into dance music, because now they can shuffle, and so it was just a big thing." Redfoo said. "I think for some of the critics, being #1 for six weeks in a row on the Billboard, people said, 'Now this is a real thing.' "

LMFAO don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. They will ring in the new year along with Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj in New York's Times Square for the 40th annual "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve."

What did you think of LMFAO's big year? Let us know in the comments!

Angelina Jolie Calls 'Blood And Honey' Crew A 'Family'

In selecting a subject for her screenwriting and directorial debut, Angelina Jolie did not choose an easy one. While some first-time directors might have gone with a romantic comedy, small-scale film or mainstream subject to tackle, Jolie's "In the Land of Blood and Honey" is a harrowing, unrelenting drama set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War that highlights the horrors of the ethnic conflict that has occurred far too often throughout history.

The film revolves around the relationship between two Bosnians on opposite sides of the conflict, Danijel (Goran Kostic) and Ajla (Zana Marjanovic) and the devastating toll the war has on their lives. When MTV News caught up with Jolie, Kostic and Marjanovic recently, we asked what aspects they were able to enjoy during the filmmaking process, since so much of the work required of the cast and crew was intense and emotional.

"When we were in New York [at the premiere], and we were all together presenting something that we felt represented a part of history and brought dialogue, we were together and we were a family, and I was extremely moved by that," Jolie said. "That was the best moment."

Jolie tapped into "something that is very personal and very private and very fixed to the region," said Kostic, a Bosnian Serb who experienced the conflict firsthand. "This [story] could be applied to that region, but equally can be applied worldwide."

Marjanovic, a Bosnian Muslim, recounted her favorite moment being her childhood friend's reaction to seeing the film for the first time.

"Her reaction was so interesting, because she came up and said, 'I never really understood what it was about ... it's all so confusing, such a complicated area and region, and for the first time, I actually understood what was going on,' " Marjanovic recalled.

Black Keys Call 'Lonely Boy' Video A 'Complete Accident'

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 02:38 AM PST

After scrapping an official version, the Keys went with a clip of Derrick T. Tuggle and his smooth moves — even if no one thought they should.

The Black Keys' "Lonely Boy" video was one of the year's biggest viral hits, thanks mostly (if not entirely) to the dance stylings of actor/part-time security guard Derrick T. Tuggle, who, in one single take, shimmied his way through the song — and into Internet lore.

While there are roughly 100 amazing things about Tuggle's performance (we especially like his modified Carlton), perhaps the most incredible aspect is the fact that it almost never happened. After all, as the Keys told MTV News, their original "Lonely Boy" plans didn't involve Tuggle in the slightest.

"There was supposed to be [a proper video for the song], but there is not. We shot a whole video here in Los Angeles about two months ago, but we didn't like it, so we scrapped the whole thing," drummer Patrick Carney explained, "Except for the footage of Derrick Tuggle dancing, which was a complete accident. ... He had an hour to listen to the song, and he memorized all the lyrics and he came up with the dance, and he basically did that on his own. And if we didn't have that footage, we would not have a video for the song."

While the band wouldn't elaborate on what was wrong with the real "Lonely Boy" video ("It just didn't work. It was supposed to be funny and it didn't work," frontman Dan Auerbach said matter-of-factly), they're thrilled by the response the Tuggle-fied clip has received — especially since no one thought releasing it was a good idea. And no, they don't have plans to shoot another version.

"I'm not sure the label believed the video would have the impact that it did, and then it took off and there was no need to put out another video," Auerbach said. "It already had gotten more hits than any regular video would have gotten."

"We got some emails from some people at the label saying that it might not be a good idea to release that as a video, but we did, and it worked," Carney said.

Dallas is about to get a dose of the Kardashians. On Saturday, Khloé Kardashian's husband, NBA star Lamar Odom, was traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Dallas Mavericks. Kardashian took to Twitter to express her bittersweet feelings about Odom's departure from the Lakers.

"We are all sad, but positive energy gets you farther than negative," Kardashian tweeted.

Kardashian later wrote, "I am sure I will love it but I am a tad thrown off." She also reassured her fans, tweeting, "I am excited :) I know this is for a reason."

Earlier in the week, rumors were swirling that Odom could be traded to the New Orleans Hornets, which prompted Kardashian to tweet that wherever her husband would go, she would follow. "I would go anywhere with my hubby," she wrote. "I can survive anywhere. People are acting crazy! LOL New Orleans is a great place. As long as I'm with Lam, I'm good."

MTV News caught up with Kardashian at Z100's Jingle Ball concert in New York on Friday, where she was on hand as a special guest host. The E! reality star told us her secret to her two-year marriage to Odom.

"I make my relationship my priority," Kardashian said. "I make sure I go to every home game; that means a lot to him and it means a lot to me. I just make sure I cook him dinner at least twice a week. I just have to make sure that's my priority, and you just have to make it. If you both want to make it work, you will."

It's safe to say that wherever a Kardashian goes, the cameras will follow. So when will we see the next season of "Khloé & Lamar"? "I don't know. We don't have air dates or anything like that," Kardashian said. "I feel like we're always filming ... and then whatever gets placed into what show does that, so it's never concrete."

Funds raised at the show will benefit Bieber's Believe charity. Portions of the proceeds raised by his holiday album, Under the Mistletoe, also went to the nonprofit. Believe raises money for organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Pencils of Promise, Musicians on Call, Project Medishare for Haiti, City of Hope, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Grammy Foundation.

"I am launching the Believe Charity Drive because I know firsthand that if you believe in your dreams, everything is possible," Bieber said in a statement about the initiative. "The Believe Charity Drive directly benefits charities that are making a difference in the world. You can ... donate as little as one dollar, or even donate your time, because everything will make a difference. Please join me in our quest to raise millions of dollars by the release of my new 2012 album, Believe. I know that with your help, we can make a change."

On Monday (December 12), in addition to announcing the holiday special, Bieber's manager Scooter Braun also tweeted about the overwhelming success Under the Mistletoe has had since its November debut.

"@JustinBieber's christmas album 'Under The Mistletoe' is the biggest selling International Christmas album for UMG in a decade!!" he tweeted. "That makes it the biggest selling holiday album on Universal in the last decade moving ahead of Andrea Bocelli. very proud and at this rate by Christmas @justinbieber's 'Under The Mistletoe' will be the biggest 4th qtr album release of the entire UMG-EMI system!"

Bieber recorded several classic tunes for the album, as well as original songs, including lead single "Mistletoe." He worked with artists like Mariah Carey, Usher, the Band Perry, Busta Rhymes and Boyz II Men on the project. "Thank u to everyone supporting this incredible album," Braun added. "All the stats are amazing but what Im most proud of is the music. REALLY GREAT MUSIC."

Mac Miller Is Wiz Khalifa's Hottest Breakthrough MC

'Mac gotta win that for sure,' Wiz tells 'RapFix Live' of fellow Pittsburgh rapper.

Wiz Khalifa knows a thing or two about breaking through to the mainstream. In 2010, the Taylor Gang general was voted by fans as MTV News' Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010. He beat out J. Cole and Nicki Minaj and went on to release his debut album, Rolling Papers, then had rap fans across the word singing his hits "Black and Yellow" and "On My Level."

When it comes to the 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC competition, Wiz is in support of all 10 of the nominees, but he does have his favorite. In a pool that includes A$AP Rocky, Future, Freddie Gibbs, French Montana, Kendrick Lamar, Machine Gun Kelly, Meek Mill, Lil Twist and Roscoe Dash, Khalifa is picking his Rostrum Records labelmate and fellow Pittsburgh MC to take it all: Mac Miller.

"Those are all great names, and I've met all of those kids — well, some of them aren't kids," Wiz told "RapFix Live" on Wednesday. "But I gotta go with the hometown, Mac."

Mac Miller, like Khalifa, hails from Pittsburgh. He made a name for himself with his 2010 mixtape K.I.D.S. and its 2011 follow-up, Best Day Ever. In 2011, Mac toured the country, sold out shows and saw his "Donald Trump" single chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Miller pulled off his biggest feat, however, when his independent debut, Blue Slide Park, became the #1 album in the country.

"Mac gotta win that for sure, 'cause he did the numbers, he did the tour, he got the fans, he's got the merch," Khalifa said. "All those guys that you named definitely had successful and fun years, but I gotta go with my hometown, Malcolm."

Each day, we'll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before concluding Tuesday when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during Wednesday's "RapFix Live," during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News' upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate.

To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010's Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won't be part of this conversation.

David Guetta Is MTV's #2 EDM Artist Of 2011!

Between radio hits, headlining gigs and even his own documentary, the French DJ/producer is a dance-music heavyweight.

If he built a bridge between urban music and electronic music last year, in 2011, French DJ/producer David Guetta now presides over a superhighway that extends around the world.

In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV's roundtable has named Guetta our #2 EDM Artist of 2011 — but that doesn't begin to explain his impact on the industry. David Guetta is now a pop-music superstar.

After collecting a Grammy in February for his remix of Madonna's "Revolver," Guetta teased his next opus, Nothing but the Beat, during Miami Music Week in March. His highly anticipated follow-up to last year's One Love would deliver a feature list on steroids, including Ludacris and Taio Cruz teaming up for first single "Little Bad Girl."

Radio hits came in the form of Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida rapping on "Where Them Girls At" and then the album's latest single, "Without You," an emotional track with Usher that David calls "the biggest song" on NBTB. Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson, Sia and Timbaland also all lent their vocals to the double disc.

For EDM purists, Nothing but the Beat had plenty to offer, like stellar co-productions with Afrojack ("Lunar" and "The Future") and Avicii (on the Grammy-nominated "Sunshine"). DJ Mag crowned Guetta the #1 DJ on the planet, and he headlined the world's biggest festival's, including Belgium's Tomorrowland Festival, Miami's Ultra Music Festival and Las Vegas' Electric Daisy Carnival.

Guetta has also hit screens small and large this year. His documentary with Burn, also titled "Nothing but the Beat," has been screened in New York and L.A. He's hit "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," with Usher, and filmed a viral video with Web sensation Keenan Cahill.

His American Music Awards performance with Nicki Minaj seems to indicate that "Turn Me On" will be the next single from Nothing but the Beat, and fans can expect a shocking new video (and much more, we're sure) early next year.

MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV's Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage.

A$AP Rocky Keeps It 'Trill' As Hottest Breakthrough MC Contender

Drake hit the road with the 'Purple Swag' MC, but it took more than a co-sign to land him on MTV News' 2011 list — vote now!

Is Harlem catching wreck still? A$AP Rocky thinks so. And now the 23-year-old MC and his lean-loving, Always Strive and Prosper crew are angling for the baton that was carved and chiseled by Uptown captains the Diplomats. Truth be told, Dipset boss Jim Jones did as much for the rap relay when he briefly ceded the stage to the upstart and his team at the Dips' October reunion in New York. But while Rocky reps for the 1-2-5, his outlook is as much NY as it is TX.

His chopped-and-screwed flow propelled this summer's Deep Purple mixtape, a woozy piece of work that had the temerity to ride the Verve's indie staple on "New York Bittersweet Symphony." Of course, that tape also gave us the inescapable "Purple Swag" and helped A$AP Rocky earn a shot at MTV News' 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC title.

"It came so natural, the Southern flow," the rapper said of his penchant for blurring borders, on Shade 45. Midwest '90s rap outfit Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Houston heroes like UGK are clear influences. "I just made my own lane."

His haze-inducing, Mixtape Daily Award-winning project, Live.Love.A$AP follows in the Houston-by-way-of-Harlem vein, as the "pretty" MC with the fat plaits gets a major assist from beatsmith Clams Casino on tracks like the rock-hard "Palace." (Schoolboy Q and A$AP associates Twelvy and Ferg also drop memorable features.)

But don't let the syrup fool you, A$AP (born name: Rakim Mayers) is very much a product of his Harlem 'hood, and he pays tribute in his "Peso" video: bodega windows papered with lottery scratch-off tickets, malt liquor bottles at a dice game and rolling MTA buses all make for a familiar backdrop.

Next up for Rocky is a compilation LP, Long.Live.A$AP, due spring 2012, and work on his solo album for RCA/ Polo Grounds, where the rap rookie was drafted for a cool $3 million. Oh, did we forget to mention that Drake recruited him and fellow Hottest Breakthrough nominee Kendrick Lamar for his Club Paradise Tour? "I'm trying to earn the right to call myself A$AP Drizzy one day," the YMCMB spitter joked in backstage footage.

How trill is that?

Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established in 2010 by MTV News as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. This year, you can vote for A$AP (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com, and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results.

Each day, we'll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude Tuesday when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during Wednesday's "RapFix Live," during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News' upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate.

Who is the next big thing ... in the world? MTV Iggy has gathered MTV personalities Matt Pinfield, Sway Calloway and SuChin Pak, as well as Bollywood and TV actress Shenaz Treasury, for today's Best New Band 2011 live-stream concert special at 4 p.m. ET on MTVIggy.com to let you in on the answer.

South Korean girl group 2NE1 — who were announced as MTV Iggy's Best New Band in the World last month based on fan votes — will headline the concert, alongside this year's runners-up: Grammy-nominated Venezuelan dance-punk band La Vida Bohème, who released their album Nuestra earlier this year; Jamaican dancehall star Gyptian, who worked with Nicki Minaj on the track "Hold Yuh"; and Malaysian singer/songwriter Yuna.

"MTV Iggy's Best New Band concert symbolizes America opening its doors to pop music from around the world. It's a sign of the times. We live in a global, connected world in which music has no borders. We are going to see that come alive tonight," Nusrat Durrani, senior vice president and general manager of MTV World, told MTV News. "Fans have been lined up outside since midnight. They will experience the magic of being up-close and personal with their idols, who have flown across oceans to come to the USA to perform for them. Fans will also discover new artists they didn't know and bask in a thrilling MTV moment."

The concert will stream on MTVIggy.com, including a global chat with real-time translations in 53 languages run by Ortsbo.com, today at 4 p.m. ET, live from MTV's Times Square studio and the Best Buy Theater in Times Square.

"The term 'world music' does not describe the acts at this event. The Best New Band concert is about pop music ... in all its colorful, loud, chaotic glory — from K-pop to Jamaican dancehall to indie punk from Latin America," Durrani said. "It reflects the world we now live in — where the Internet and other factors have created a vast and exciting universe of music accessible to anyone with a connection.

"It brings about amazing opportunities for us to tap into," he added. "For example, tonight you will see Matt Pinfield opine on La Vida Bohème, a band from Venezuela, and people around the world watching the live stream will be introduced to both the band and to Matt Pinfield. You will see Bollywood actress Shenaz connecting the very passionate fans of 2NE1 to the artist. You will see Sway and SuChin Pak introduce all of this music to the world. It's what MTV does very well. It's a very cool show."

Don't miss MTV Iggy's Best New Band 2011 live-stream concert special today at 4 p.m. ET on MTVIggy.com.

Sandra Bullock Insists 'Gravity' Will 'Blow Your Mind'

Actress says 2012 Alfonso Cuarón film will be 'profoundly silent and big and loud.'
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

One of the great question marks of 2012 has to be Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity." The Mexican director hasn't made a feature film since the widely loved sci-fi film "Children of Men" in 2006, and so far, we've only heard about casting drama from his follow-up effort.

After cycling through several stars, including Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr., Cuarón finally landed his leads with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, but the news from the set stopped again soon after that.

When Bullock spoke with MTV News' Josh Horowitz while promoting "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," she finally shed some light on the mystery project. Whispers of the look and scale of the film have been some of the few details that have slipped through, and Bullock was certainly qualified to confirm the rumors.

"It is extraordinary, and I have the messed-up back to prove it," she said with a laugh, later adding that the film's technology will "blow your mind."

We also know the film's setting — space — and there's been talk of the isolation Bullock's character experiences throughout the film. Bullock spoke about working on the set and the rig she spent most of her days in.

"The first day of set, we're on a massive soundstage. All I see is this large, black arm. ... I realize that's what made the cars in Detroit," Bullock joked. "We called her 'Iris,' and she was on a long track, and there was a cube of lights with this metal contraption in it. They go, 'That's the light box where you're going to be.' "

Bullock said she was either locked in the box or strung up in a rigging system until Clooney arrived on set, but once he left, things returned to normal. "I never had a human being to interact with until George showed up, and when he left, it was like the great vacuum. It was isolation like I had never experienced in my life," she said.

When pressed to describe the tone of the film, Bullock struggled to pin down exactly how to describe it.

"It is going to be so profoundly silent and big and loud. I don't know how to explain it, because I have never seen anything like it. I never experienced anything like it," she said. "There are no words in my mental dictionary that can describe what this experience was, but once you see, you're just going to be like, 'Oh my f---ing God.' "

'Men In Black 3' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Posted: 11 Dec 2011 11:24 PM PST

Expect the Will Smith series' famously wacky aliens and humor, along with some time traveling.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Twelve years and a purported budget of $215 million later, the men in black will be back for a third go-around. The first trailer for "Men in Black 3" hit Monday (December 12), and Agents K (Tommy Lee Jones) and J (Will Smith) are up to their same old, same old: rogue aliens, memory-erasing — normal work stuff.

We've watched the trailer a few times now and have picked out the five scenes you should be paying attention to. Here's a tip: You should probably brush up on your "Back to the Future" vocabulary.

The Graffiti Alien
One of the staples of the series has been the routine calls to aliens who have stepped out of their bounds, and it's always when the series is at its best. The "Men in Black" films have consistently delivered with interesting looking aliens, and the trailer for the third is no exception. Here, we get to see an E.T. who can disguise himself as street art. Expect even more out-of-this-world aliens when the movie hits theaters in May.

Neuralizer
You know it's a "Men in Black" movie once the neuralizers come out. Although the trailer mostly sets up the premise for the third movie without exploring the last two acts, the one thing that is perfectly clear is that we shouldn't expect anything different in a third film. The series seems to stick close to a tight formula, and that's fine. Let's just hope they mix it up more this time.

"Smiles Like This"
While other parts of the trailer might remind us of some of the more tired elements of the series, Smith's imitation of Jones' smile brings back memories of why the movies make money. It's been three years since a Will Smith flick, and now's definitely the time for that to change.

Time Jump
Toward the end of the trailer, we start to see hints of the bigger story. As we learn from Emma Thompson's Agent Oh, something happens to the space-time continuum, and K has been dead for 40 years. That introduces the movie's main arc, J's Marty McFly-like adventure back to the past to save his partner from the unfortunate new fate.

Young K
All is revealed at the end of the trailer. J wakes up next to a very confused, very young Agent K, played by the perfectly cast Josh Brolin. They sound and look so much alike, even with just one line from the younger version. J and Young K will work together for most of the movie to stop the events from the alternate future.

"Men in Black 3" opens on May 25, 2012.

Katy Perry's 'SNL' Florence Welch Imitation Was 'Amazing'

'I'm kind of really honored,' Florence and the Machine singer says of Perry's parody.

Last month, Florence and the Machine singer Florence Welch pulled double duty on "Saturday Night Live," not only performing but also making a rather unexpected cameo in a sketch called "New Jack Thanksgiving," during which she vamped her way through a sultry, turkey-themed R&B jam.

Of course, if you caught this past weekend's "SNL," you may have thought she showed up again, this time in a skit about a canine-centric courtroom drama called "Doggie Duty." Only it wasn't Welch: It was host Katy Perry, who nailed a note-perfect impression of Flo on a song called "The Dog Trial Is Over." Yes, it was about as random as you'd think, and yes, Welch found it to be quite amazing — even if she hadn't actually seen it yet.

"I haven't seen it yet! I've seen pictures!" she told MTV News backstage at KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas on Sunday. "I think she looks amazing! I was like, 'Yeah, that's it! You've got the hair, the dress, everything.' ... I've heard she did a really amazing job, and I'm kind of really honored."

Not only did Welch think Perry got her look just right, but, having seen everything that goes into getting a sketch on the air, she knows just how long it took to make it happen. Which is why she's doubly honored ... both by the impression and by the fact that not many folks can cameo on "SNL" without actually being there.

"We performed on 'SNL' and everyone's so nice," she said. "I sat in the writers' room with everybody when we were organizing the skit that I did, and just kind of seeing how everyone gets crowded into this tiny room and sits on the floor, and being there with all the writers and the actors, it was kind of really amazing. So I feel very honored to be part of a skit without actually being there!"

Despite feeling a little under the weather, Justin Bieber performed for President Obama and his family at the 30th annual Christmas in Washington concert on Sunday, the Press Association reports. The show, which benefits the Children's National Medical Center, also featured performances by Jennifer Hudson, the Band Perry, "Victorious" star Victoria Justice and Cee Lo Green.

According to Aceshowbiz.com, Bieber performed his track "Mistletoe" — off his holiday album, Under the Mistletoe — during the annual event. This marks the second time the teen star has appeared on the show. He performed two years ago.

"Waking up with a bad cold ... weather change. but will be ready tonight for CHRISTMAS in WASHINGTON. #resting," he tweeted in the hours leading up to the show, later adding, "Feeling good. Just had some fun at rehearsals and now we r ready. Time to sing for the President. #canadianrepresenter. Seeing the fans ... being here again 2 years later. Feeling very #blessed and #grateful. Thank U! Great night! President Obama is one cool Prez. He told me he was 'chillin.' #PresidentialSWAG."

During the event, a number of Christmas classics like "This Christmas," "Silent Night," "Let It Snow" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas" were performed. The night ended with all of the performers, as well as the Obamas and host Conan O'Brien, taking the stage for "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing."

While the night was all about the holidays, O'Brien did manage to poke a little fun at Bieber during the show. "It's especially exciting to be here during this joyous season, when we celebrate the arrival of a miracle child, worshiped by millions around the world," he said. "Of course I'm talking about Justin Bieber."

The full concert is set to air Friday on TNT.
