NEW YORK — Are you ready to Watch the Throne again? With Jay-Z and Kanye West still riding high off the success of their summer masterpiece, the duo just may get back in the studio and give fans another dose, Hov revealed to MTV News.

"It depends on how this thing finishes up," Jay said in reference to his and Kanye's current Watch the Throne Tour. "We — I say 'we' because I'm in Throne mode — we're in a great place creatively. You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a Throne album next year. You know, we're really in a great place creatively. We really found our zone."

Back in July, during an intimate listening session for the then-unreleased WTT, Jay revealed to a room of reporters that he had two songs already recorded for his yet-untitled 11th solo album but hasn't talked about it very much since.

It's been two years since Jigga dropped his last LP, The Blueprint 3. Kanye, on the other hand, released his last solo album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, in 2010. It was both a commercial and critical success, but was noticeably absent from the Album of the Year category when Grammy nominations were announced last month. During a December 1 Throne concert in his hometown of Chicago, Yeezy addressed the snub, surprisingly blaming himself for releasing Fantasy and Watch the Throne in the same year. "Don't worry, because me and Hov are gonna keep on making sh--," he told the crowd.

Jay, who on Thursday announced a pair of charity concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall, didn't give official word about when fans can expect any of the three projects, but he is definitely in his zone!

How excited are you for new Jay-Z, Kanye West and Throne albums? Tell us in the comments!

Snooki Sneaks Into Our Top 10 TV Characters Of 2011

'Parks and Recreation' antihero Ron Swanson lands at #1, with 'Breaking Bad' meth cook Walter and the 'Jersey Shore' guidette behind him.

It's all come down to this: Only 10 remain in our countdown of the Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, and the results might surprise you.

It goes without saying that one of our favorite "Jersey Shore" stars found her way toward the top of our list, but it's a certain "Parks and Rec" administrator who took home all the bacon (and all the eggs while he was at it). Combine those characters with two nods for "Breaking Bad," an Emmy-winning "Game of Thrones" actor and one comedian who risked his very life to bring some of the biggest laughs the small screen has ever enjoyed, and you'll find yourself looking at our Top 10 TV Characters of 2011.

Stay tuned to MTV News for interviews with several of our top honorees.

See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 50 to 41, including a masked bachelor and dashing novelist/crime-fighter.

10. Gus Fring, "Breaking Bad"
I've never smoked meth, but my guess is the effects are similar to the feeling shooting through my body when the crank kingpin — SPOILER ALERT! — exited the smoky scene of a suicide bombing, straightened his tie and revealed that in place of his face was a steaming mass of Fring-like goo. He was in death as he was in life: debonair, a spiller of blood and totally goddamn frightening. Contemplating a "Breaking Bad" without Gus makes us want to reach for the pipe. -Eric Ditzian

9. Constance Langdon, "American Horror Story"
Both television and the horror genre are no strangers to terrible mothers, but Jessica Lange's deliciously dark Constance on "American Horror Story" truly takes the cake. How many moms have you known to allow their children to die in a house that keeps the dead's spirits locked in our mortal realm for all eternity? The two-time Oscar winner marks her first regular television gig with "AHS," and it's a phenomenal debut. As awful as Constance can be, as mean and nasty as she gets, she's impossible to look away from. And, so help us, you actually feel bad for this woman and her cursed womb. Only an actress of Lange's caliber could make the ruthless Constance into someone you can root for despite yourself — and with only one season under her belt, we can only imagine the "Horror" Lange will bring in the future. -Josh Wigler

8. Fat Mac, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"
Remember Robert De Niro's turn in "Raging Bull," when he gained 60 pounds to play Jake La Motta? Of course you don't; there weren't any sparkling vampires in "Raging Bull." Long story short, De Niro packed on the lb's and subsequently won every award on the planet. Rob McElhenney, on the other hand, added a solid 50 pounds of fat to play Mac on the current season of "Sunny," and he'll be lucky to be nominated for a Blockbuster Entertainment Award. So let's honor him here — not only for ruining his body for the sake of comedy, but for spoiling one of TV's oldest tropes: As shows go on, characters don't age, they get better looking. On the seventh season of "Sunny," Mac looks worse than ever, yet his best moments — carrying around a trash bag filled with chimichangas, insisting he's just "cultivating mass" — steal the show. Whether it's method acting or some sociological experiment, you've got to appreciate McElhenney's willingness to bust boundaries — and waistbands. -James Montgomery

See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 40 to 31, including a "hootie hoo!"-hollering chef and funnyman talk-show host.

7. Milania Giudice, "Real Housewives of New Jersey
"You have such muscular legs when you do gymnastics, sometimes you gotta rest your toes," Gia sang to little sister Milania — both daughters of "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Teresa Giudice — on her fifth birthday. The song is irrelevant to all the adorable little Milania represents, but I just love that line. Milania remained blissfully unaware of the drama her mother and castmates stirred up on "RHONJ" and instead delivered such irreverent pearls as "give me pizza, you old troll" to her father and climbed onto couches, into supermarket freezer displays and, most importantly, into our hearts. -Rya Backer

6. Phil Dunphy, "Modern Family"
In the sea of characters on "Modern Family," the biggest one of all just might be Phil Dunphy, played by Emmy winner Ty Burrell. Prime time's most well-meaning husband, dad and son-in-law, Phil lives his life with his own joie de vivre, blind to the fact that sometimes (when he lets his feet get off the ground) he borders on the ridiculous. He's over-the-top and underappreciated, but at the end of the day, it's his love for life, shenanigans and family that keeps audiences, and the Dunphy clan, coming back for more. -Jocelyn Vena

5. Eric Northman, "True Blood"
There are plenty of badass bloodsuckers littering vampire canon, so what makes Eric Northman (played by Alexander Skarsgård) of HBO's "True Blood" so special? Well, have you seen the man? OK, in addition to his stunning Swedish looks, the hardened vampire sheriff let us see his little-seen soft side this season, thanks to a bout of witch-induced amnesia. It was a standout story line in an otherwise meh season. Here's hoping that even though he has his memory back, Eric will still forget his shirt from time to time. -Amy Wilkinson

Check out our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 30 to 21, including a depressed meth cook and a football coach with a heart of gold.

4. Tyrion Lannister, "Game of Thrones"
At first glance or read, Tyrion Lannister might seem the least compelling and least likely to live of all the formidable characters fighting for power and survival in George R.R. Martin's brutal, twisted world. But upon further inspection and screen time, he becomes the most intriguing man — or half-man, as Tyrion would say himself — on the show. His greatest weapons are his intellect and fearlessness, and he uses them all too well to manipulate everyone around him. Not to mention the fact that he gets the best lines in the show — "every dwarf is a bastard, but every bastard need not be a dwarf," for one. And who can forget his epic confessional monologue in the Eyrie? Not every TV character can say they once brought a jackass and a honeycomb to a brothel, then turn right around to admire his freshly earned Emmy Award. But Tyrion is a Lannister, after all — and a Lannister always pays his debts. -Kara Warner

3. Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, "Jersey Shore"
The most non-guidette guidette (Snooki is a Chilean-born cheerleader adopted into an Italian household) started as the most-loathed member of the "Jersey Shore" "family." Four seasons later, she's the most beloved. Snooki makes up one-half of Team Meatball (the meat or the ball is up to you), and has always searched for love on the show. Openly into tanned and 'roided "gorillas," Snooki has had trysts with fellow castmates Vinny and Mike "The Situation," but the little nugget is smarter than she seems, creating a brand out of her outrageousness including clothing, accessories, novelty items and a planned spin-off with "Jersey Shore" bestie JWoww. -Natasha Chandel

2. Walter White, "Breaking Bad"
Based on no facts and all gut, season four of this AMC hit was the greatest season in the history of TV. That statement is no crazier than Walt himself, a wicked genius who left behind the last shreds of his former morality and went full Heisenberg on us, bragging to his wife that he's a hardened criminal ("I am the danger!"), and — SPOILER ALERT, once again — poisoning a child to save his own hide. Like Jack Torrance and Dr. Evil before him, Walt is a bad man you can't help but love, even as you kinda wish he gets the horribly painful death he deserves. But not yet. He's too much fun to watch. -Eric Ditzian

Check out our Top 50 TV Characters, 20 to 11, featuring a sword-wielding nine-year-old and a Trouble Tones teen.

1. Ron Swanson, "Parks and Recreation"
Mustachioed Ron Swanson loves steak, the great outdoors and making sure the bureaucracy of Pawnee, Indiana, doesn't run as smoothly as it should. Ron (Nick Offerman), the Parks Department's antihero, may be manly and tough, but he's also got a lot of heart. It's his ability to deadpan his way through life while still only wanting the best for the people he loves that makes him the best TV character of the year. Now if only he can find a way keep the Tammys out of his hair and Leslie out of trouble the same way he's managed to hold down a job without doing any work, and we're sure he'd be a little less grumpy. -Jocelyn Vena

Evanescence's 'My Heart Is Broken': Behind The Video

Second clip from band's self-titled album is 'very surreal,' frontwoman Amy Lee tells MTV News.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

Earlier this summer, Evanescence took over a very cramped warehouse in Brooklyn to shoot the back-to-basics video for "What You Want," the first single from their self-titled (and subsequently chart-topping) comeback album. For several sweaty hours, Amy Lee and company rocked and roared, performing the song in front of a jam-packed crowd of superfans, most of whom had spent the day queuing up outside, in the heat, just to be part of the production.

In the end, all that perspiration was worth it: The "What You Want" video was definitely one of the most visceral the band has ever made, capturing both the throttling energy of their live sets and the genuine joy Ev (and their fans) were feeling after four years apart. It was a reunion — a super-charged, super-sweaty one.

But now, with their return clicking on all cylinders, Evanescence are prepping the video for "My Heart Is Broken," the second single from their album. And when MTV News caught up with Lee on the set in Los Angeles, she explained that this time, they're not going for visceral; they're going for ethereal. And a lot less sweltering too.

"We have an air conditioner this time," she laughed. "This [video] is going to look a lot different. Actually, I kind of wanted it to be the opposite. The first video, for 'What You Want,' was very real, and this is very surreal."

To help get that surreal feel, Lee explained that she drew inspiration from a decidedly below-the-radar source: the 1988 British fantasy/horror film "Paperhouse," which stuck with her since she first saw it as a teen.

"[It's about] this girl, and everything that she would draw would come to life in her dreams, and she was creating this dream world for herself. And at first, it was cool, but then it's like this nightmare," she explained. "So I sort of thought it would apply, and be cool, to have it be this dream that you're trapped in. So you're in a place that, at first, is a magical world, but at the same time, you're isolated and trapped there, and that's the reason you want to come back to reality after a time.

"We're playing with fiber optics, and so it's basically like I'm drawing the world around me from nothingness, and when I draw things with my hands, it's like they actually come to life," she continued. "So it's a lot of fun with creating this surreal dream world, and the guys' performance is sort of like the dream within the dream, in an abyss of darkness; it's very cool."

Even though the "Broken" clip delves deep into fantasy, the song itself was actually inspired by a very real (and very awful) situation: sex trafficking. Which is why, Lee said, the idea of being trapped in a nightmare applies so well. A friend of the band's had started , an organization in New York that helps rescue victims of sex trafficking.

"We were having conversations with her, and I was writing at the same time," Lee said. "And a lot of times when I write, I just sort of make up words, and something will stick, and I'll be like, 'Oh, that's from my subconscious. That's what I need to write the song about.' And that sort of happened halfway through. I was like, 'I think I'm writing about this thing, it's on my heart,' just imagining being in such a trapped place and how that might feel, so the song was actually inspired by that idea."

Tom Cruise Credits Katie Holmes For 'Rock Of Ages'

'You're just as surprised as I am,' actor tells MTV News about being in the movie musical.

When the cast announcements started pouring in for the big-screen adaptation of hit musical "Rock of Ages," we were surprised by how many A-listers director Adam Shankman and company lined up, including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J. Blige, Paul Giamatti and Julianne Hough.

And as it turns out, no one was more shocked to find himself in a movie musical than Cruise himself.

"You're just as surprised as I am," Cruise told MTV News while promoting "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," adding that his wife, Katie Holmes, was the driving force behind his consideration of the role. "Kate kept saying, 'You've got to make a musical.' The dancing of ['Tropic Thunder' character] Les Grossman is inspired because Kate is a dancer, she sings, and she would take us to [dance classes]," he revealed. "[She would say] 'I've got this dance class for the family, come on we've got to do it, we've got hip-hop class, we've got to do it.' "

Cruise went on to say that he put a lot of research into his character Stacee Jaxx and that he is not based on any one person. "I just kind of studied the whole time period and read a lot of books," he said.

While Cruise might still be a little coy about the role, Shankman told us recently that we're going to see a completely different side of the action star in this film. "For Tom, well, I would say he does an insane version of 'Pour Some Sugar on Me,' that every time I show it to people, they're like, 'Can we see that again?' He and Malin Akerman do one of the most outrageous interpretations of 'I Want to Know What Love Is'; I just hope I get it past the ratings board."

'X Factor': Rachel Crow Breaks Down After Elimination

While Marcus Canty landed in the bottom two for the third straight week, it was the 13-year-old songbird who got the lowest number of votes.

Another week, another dramatic finish to "The X Factor," as 13-year-old Rachel Crow was voted off the Fox singing competition Thursday (December 8) when judge Nicole Scherzinger purposely threw the vote to a tie and left the final decision in the hands of America's votes.

That placed Crow against Marcus Canty, who landed in the bottom two for the third week in a row. When host Steve Jones read the final tally, Crow — who moments earlier said she'd be fine with whatever decision was made — fell to the ground as if someone had punched her in the gut, sobbing loud and hard on the "X Factor" stage.

Crow was picked up off the ground by her mentor, Simon Cowell, and consoled by her mother. "Mommy!" Crow wept, while cameras cut to a shocked Scherzinger, who looked like she couldn't believe what she'd just done.

When she could finally speak, Crow told host Jones, "I just, I love you so much, everybody, for voting for me, even though you didn't. ... Thank you for giving me this, because without you, I'm nothing. And I hope this is not my ending. You know what? I know it's not. And I will go so far, I promise you. And I love you." She went on to thank her family for their support.

Said Cowell after the decision: "I want to thank everyone that's voted for this young girl. I believe she went out on the highest she could have gone out on. Like I said, from the very first time I met you, we're going to be hearing a lot more about Rachel Crow, I give you my word on that."

Jones approached Scherzinger and asked if she had anything to say, and the ex-Pussycat Doll, who was heavily booed by the audience, turned away without comment.

Earlier in the evening, both Crow and Canty were forced to sing for their lives in the competition. Canty took on "I'm Going Down," while Crow tackled "I'd Rather Go Blind." Following the performances, L.A. Reid praised Crow for her "amazing" rendition but voted for Canty to stay, while Cowell and Paula Abdul cast their votes in favor of Crow. That left the deciding vote to Scherzinger, who through tears said she couldn't make the decision herself, so she voted for Canty to stay so the tiebreaker would lie in the hands of viewer votes.

The night prior, Crow sang B.o.B and Bruno Mars' "Nothin' on You" and Michael Jackson's "Music & Me," prompting Abdul to call her "beautifully fearless," "a wonderful role model," "every girl's best friend and every parent's daydream," "fantastic and magical" and with a "vocal depth [that] transcends all generations." Canty, meanwhile, sang Chaka Kahn's "Ain't Nobody" and Leon Russell's "A Song for You," the latter of which was dubbed "a bit boring" by Cowell. But L.A. Reid compared Canty to Muhammad Ali, praising his ability to get up after being repeatedly knocked down. "I've got your back," Reid told him, and he kept his word on Thursday.

Earlier in the evening, Josh Krajcik, Melanie Amaro and Chris Rene advanced to next week's semifinal. When Canty learned he would have to once again sing for his life, he remarked, "Bottom two, again? Gosh, man. But, top five, man, I just gotta go out and deliver."

The episode also featured live performances by Lenny Kravitz and Mary J. Blige.

Katy Perry Gets 'SNL' Advice From Russell Brand

'I've only ever hosted, like, dinner parties and birthday parties,' Perry jokes during rehearsals for this week's 'Saturday Night Live' episode.

NEW YORK — On Saturday when "Saturday Night Live" goes, well, live, Katy Perry will be the lady of the night. The pop singer is currently in rehearsals for her hosting gig, and despite some butterflies, she has in her corner someone who really understands the responsibilities of hosting helping her out from afar: her husband, comedian Russell Brand.

"I've only ever hosted, like, dinner parties and birthday parties. This is a bit more than that," she joked on set with MTV News. "It's not as intimidating when you get here because it's a bit smaller than it looks on TV, and I'm up for a challenge, for something new. I love to be challenged ... I married Russell Brand."

Speaking of the devil, Brand hosted the show back in February and his wife has been reaching out to him for any and all advice he might be able to offer. "My husband, of course, every day I call him and I'm like 'this happened' and he's like, 'I know what that means and here's the next play-by-play for tomorrow,' so he's gotten me really prepared for this week, thankfully."

He's not the only past "SNL" host that Perry is looking to for guidance. She's also obsessing over Melissa McCarthy's October hosting appearance. "Well, I saw the Melissa McCarthy episode and I thought she did a great job," she said. "She's so fun to watch and she really brings it, so that's what I was soaking in this week — Melissa McCarthy and all of her nuances."

This marks the second time this year that Perry has been on the show. She was the musical guest back in 2010, but still managed to show off just how funny she can be during a sketch in which she poked fun at some controversy regarding her ample bosom and a canceled "Sesame Street" appearance.

"Well, you're gonna see some Hello Kitty, some cockney accents, maybe, and some me flubbing my lines, probably laughing out loud at Kristen Wiig 'cause she's amazing," Perry teased of this week's show, which will also include musical guest and past tourmate Robyn. "They're all really amazing. I feel supercool to be able to be in the same breathing space as them."

Speaking of Wiig, Perry recalls one interesting encounter the two have already shared on set. "It's a bit stalkerish 'cause last time I was here, I Twittered that I would like a lock of Kristen Wiig's hair so that I can put it under my pillow every night," she explained. "And she read it and she actually gave me a card with a lock of her hair with a tiny blue bow in it. ... Ever since then, I've been obsessed."

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Tour Will Be 'Exaggerated'

When Lady Gaga released Born This Way earlier this year, she had just wrapped up the Monster Ball Tour. Now, with 2011 coming to an end, it's only a matter of time before she launches her next stage spectacle. So what should fans expect? Anything and everything.

"This album was the most personal [because of] the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion [and] emotion from her and the team," Fernando Garibay, Gaga's producer, told MTV News last week. "Every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme. We're excited now, putting that into the tour and expressing that on a live performance level.

"You can imagine what happened on the Monster Ball, so use your imagination," he said. "That's what's going to happen, exaggerated."

For now, Gaga is playing radio shows — smaller shows like KIIS-FM's Jingle Ball in Los Angeles, which she headlined last weekend.

"I would love to go out there and do my entire new album, but everyone out there wants to hear the songs that [radio] has made hits for me over the years," she told us backstage at Jingle Ball. "So I wanted to honor the radio station as well as the fans tonight and give them a little bit of my new record, but also all the songs from the past three years."

She explained to MTV News that these mini-gigs are a good tease of what fans will see on the Born This Way trek. Gaga's recent performances have been pop shows full of spectacle, including bouncy, hospital-themed dance numbers (an homage to the "Marry the Night" video) and dedications to metal culture with gang-inspired fashion that certainly reflects the looks she wore on parts of the Monster Ball Tour. But they are on such a smaller scale that Gaga admitted she couldn't do everything she wanted to do.

"I couldn't fit my Olympic-size moon onto [the] stage," she laughed. "It's going to have the feeling of it in some ways. It's hard to explain. It's very different aesthetics. But the vision of the show tonight is sort of a continuation of this junkyard motorcycle gang mixed with a dark Christmas. I'm excited; we worked really hard on it."

In addition to beginning to conceive the Born This Way Tour, Gaga just dropped her "Marry The Night" video, is up for three Grammys and is beginning to work on her next album.

Freddie Gibbs Is Tough Candidate For Hottest Breakthrough MC

Gangsta Gibbs' mixtapes earned him a deal with Young Jeezy and a spot on MTV News' 2011 Hottest Breakthrough list — vote now!
By Nadeska Alexis

When Freddie Gibbs joined Sway on "RapFix Live" in September, the Gary, Indiana, native was firm in insisting that he would never stray from the deeply lyrical gangster rap that fans now expect from him. His recent deal with Young Jeezy's CTE label bolstered his efforts and kept the spotlight on his releases this year, earning him a nomination for MTV News' Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011.

Despite a fizzled deal with Interscope Records in 2007, Gibbs (born Frederick Tipton) continued his rise to lyrical prominence by dropping popular mixtapes, including 2009's The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik. The success of those two mixtapes landed him a spot on XXL's 2010 Freshman cover, but that was only the beginning for Gangsta Gibbs.

The 29-year-old rapper continued his manic music run, releasing the independent EP Str8 Killa No Filla via Decon Records in 2010, and in April he made his biggest career move thus far, inking a new deal with Young Jeezy's CTE (Corporate Thugz Entertainment).

Besides teaming up with the Snowman on singles like "Run DMC" and "Do It for You," Gibbs put in some extra time in the lab, turning out his mixtape Cold Day in Hell in October. The project showcased his growth, with standout cuts including "Anything to Survive" and "Menace II Society" and a slew of guest features from Freeway, Jeezy, Juicy J and 2 Chainz.

Major label or not, don't expect Gibbs to soften the content of his material anytime soon. "I wanna be taboo. I want your parents to not want my music in your iPod," Gibbs told MTV News. "I want your mom to be scared of what I'm talking about because it's so real." His fellow contenders for Hottest Breakthrough MC should probably be scared too.

Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established by MTV News in 2010 as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year, you can vote for Machine Gun Kelly (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com, and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results.

Each day, we'll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude on December 13 when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during December 14's "RapFix Live," during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News' upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate.

To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010's Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won't be part of this conversation.

Who do you think should be 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC? Share your picks in the comments!

'Hunger Games': Top 10 Moments Of 2011

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 02:19 AM PST

In this week's Hobnobbing, we reflect on the movie's milestones from the past year.
By Amy Wilkinson

Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games"

If any film caught Internet fire this year, it was most certainly the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' young-adult novel "The Hunger Games." Though the film had been optioned by Lionsgate way back in 2009, 2011 was the year fans finally saw all the pieces come together, from casting the titular tournament's 24 tributes to a teaser tidbit and full-length trailer.

As such, MTV News is taking a look back at all things "Hunger Games" with a list of the franchise's best moments from 2011 (in chronological order). Let the Games begin!

X Marks the Release Date
The year began with a bang when Lionsgate announced in late January that "The Hunger Games" would swoop into theaters March 23, 2012. Lionsgate set that particular date in its crosshairs hoping to capitalize on spring breaks and Easter weekend for the (mostly) family-friendly release.

Jennifer Lawrence Is Katniss Everdeen
The Reaping then began in earnest, with seemingly every young Hollywood actress vying for the coveted role of District 12's female tribute. Would it be Hailee Steinfeld? Kaya Scodelario? Abigail Breslin? In the end, MTV News had the pleasure of revealing that then-20-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, who nabbed an Oscar nomination for her work in 2010's "Winter's Bone," would enter the arena as the much-loved heroine.

But Who Will Play Peeta and Gale?
Similar speculation followed the casting of Katniss' two love interests — fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark and hunting buddy Gale Hawthorne. Nine young actors were reportedly in contention for one of the two roles, including "Weeds" star Hunter Parrish and "Wizards of Waverly Place" actor David Henrie, but, ultimately, Josh Hutcherson landed the role of Peeta while Liam Hemsworth won Gale.

First Look at Lawrence as Katniss
Salivating fans didn't have to wait too long for their first taste of Lawrence as Katniss, as she posed for the cover of Entertainment Weekly, flaunting the tribute's soon-to-be-iconic uniform. The styled snap quieted many critics who'd said the actress was too blond, too tall, too pretty or too whatever for the role.

Cinna Will Rock
There were no shortage of casting announcements in spring 2011, but none seemed to catch watchful fans off guard more than that of Lenny Kravitz landing the role of Katniss' stylist Cinna. But, really, it made a lot of sense, considering the musician's fondness for fashion. "I like clothes, and I like playing with clothes. Every now and again, you go south. It's all good. I enjoy fashion as an art," he told MTV News.

The Mockingjay Catches Fire
In a nifty bit of promotion, Lionsgate released the first "Hunger Games" poster in July, and it was literally on fire. Well, sorta. The one-sheet depicted Katniss' infamous talisman — a mockingjay pin — wreathed in glowing flames. The eye-catching motion poster definitely gave fans something to chew on while they waited for more first looks.

We Spy Two "Hunger Games" Hotties
Following in co-star Lawrence's footsteps, the men of "The Hunger Games" landed their own EW cover story, in which Hutcherson took the opportunity to quiet a few nagging concerns about his stature."Jennifer's not 2 feet taller than me!" he told the magazine. "If anything, maybe she's a half-inch taller."

November 2013 Is "Catching Fire"
We hadn't even seen a frame of the first film yet, yet Lionsgate announced a November 22, 2013, release date for the follow-up, "Catching Fire." With "The Twilight Saga" taking its final winter bow in 2012, it looks like "The Hunger Games" is poised to be the new holiday tentpole.

A Tasty Tease
All those cover images and promotional stills went only so far to sate fans' appetites. A cinematic preview was in order, and we at MTV were happy to deliver. During the closing moments of this year's Video Music Awards, viewers were treated to a 30-second sneak peek, following Katniss as she sprinted through the arena's blazing forest, with Gale's words of encouragement resounding in her ears. Sure, the bite was short, but it was still satisfying.

First Full-Length Trailer
Nearly three lean months followed before the first full-length trailer made its entrance into the arena. And boy, was it worth the wait. From the tearful reaping to the Games' taut opening moments, the clip was one of our top teases of the year, offering a promise of the big-screen awesomeness to follow.

What were your favorite "Hunger Games" moments this year? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @hollywoodcrush with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

Jay-Z Marvels At Playing Carnegie Hall Charity Shows

'Any time I get a chance to expand and broaden the reach of hip-hop is a great thing,' Jay says of February 6 and 7 shows.

First he went from Marcy to Madison Square; now Jay-Z is going from Crooklyn to Carnegie Hall.

On February 6 and 7, Hov will play the famed Carnegie Hall — and it's all for a great cause. "Any time I get a chance to expand and broaden the reach of hip-hop is a great thing for me on a personal level," Jay said after announcing the shows Thursday (December 8).

"When we were looking at hip-hop, we were just happy to play club dates," Jay told MTV News. "And then Run-DMC started doing arenas, and you're like, 'Man, this is possible,' and it just keeps going further and further."

With the pair of shows — which will be held at Carnegie's Stern Auditorium — Jay aims to raise millions of dollars for the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation in an effort to put low-income NYC students in a position to attend college.

Shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, Hov — as well as top brass from Carnegie Hall, the United Way and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation — gathered in Carnegie to announce the concert and talk about their fundraising efforts. Tickets for the dates will be sold privately and priced at a premium rate, fetching anywhere from $500 to $2,500 to raise a significant pot of money for the charity.

Regular fans aren't completely shut out, though. On January 30, a number of reasonably priced tickets will go on sale to the public. The publicly sold seats are being released so close to the concert date in hopes of curtailing scalping.

After the press conference, Jigga sat down with MTV News to explain his motivation. "We're not just doing a show for the sake of it," Hov said. "For all these years, [the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation has] been really grassroots. My mom has been getting on the bus herself and taking kids to orientation and doing this work by herself. Now ... we're building this thing out."

Jay hasn't determined how his Carnegie set will look, if he will bring out any guests during his shows or how many times he will perform "N---as in Paris," but all those questions will be eventually be answered.

"We have to do a rendition of 'N---as in Paris' in Carnegie Hall; it just has to go down," Jay said, laughing after being posed the question. "I ain't think about that. That'll be great."

Karmin Say 'Crash Your Party' Video Tells 'Our Story'

Internet stars Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan say filming first major-label video is 'a little bit different.'
By Jim Cantiello

LOS ANGELES — The Internet has launched dozens of stars in 2011 for the wrong reasons (see: Courtney Stodden, Rebecca Black), and then there's Karmin, a scary-talented couple whose infectious and clever covers of hip-hop songs blew up your inbox back in April.

Their reinterpretation of Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now" got them on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and, more importantly, snatched up by L.A. Reid as he took over Epic Records this summer.

On the set of Karmin's brand-new music video for debut single "Crash Your Party," longtime lovebirds Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan were still trying to wrap their heads around their up-and-up career trajectory.

"We feel a lot different than we used to with [us] making the videos at home in the living room," Heidemann told MTV News. "We were joking about it earlier, how we used to run over to the camera and push record and run [back] and be like, 'OK, ready?' "

"And then we had to turn the air off so it was always, like, 106 degrees in there," Noonan recalled. "This is a little bit different."

"A little bit different" is putting it mildly. The set was packed with a massive crew, multiple sets, child actors and stage parents and wardrobe changes, and the air conditioning was keeping it all at a bearable temperature. No wonder Heidemann used the word "overwhelmed" to describe their feelings in the midst of a 21-hour shoot.

The just-premiered clip, directed by Syndrome, features Heidemann and Noonan rocking out on YouTube before the pair climb into a magical suitcase that transports them to strangers' kitchens, children's birthday parties, karaoke bars and, ultimately, a massive stage where they are performing for adoring fans.

"It's kind of our story, in a strange way," Heidemann said.

Is Mac Miller's Performance MTV's Best Of 2011?

'Knock Knock' is up for best MTV live performance of the year — cast your vote!
By Rya Backer

Mac Miller performs in Chicago in October
Photo: MTV

Mac Miller's live performance of "Knock Knock" in Chicago is a fairly good reflection of what you're in for at one of his concerts: very little gravity, a lot of movement and fans who could easily understudy for the rapper because they know every word to every track.

It's his pumped-up, feel-good presence that puts him on the list of contenders for the Best MTV Live Performance of 2011.

And we totally understand why he made the list. Just last week, when we checked out Mac's set at New York's Best Buy Theater, it wasn't so much a concert as it was a gigantic school's-out-forever party. He proved to be a very capable MC in both the literal and hip-hop definitions, ordering the audience to have fun and delivering tracks from his EPs and LP alike with the backing of a DJ, a handful of friends and a hype man. There were many times during the nearly hour-and-a-half-long set, however, when Miller didn't even need to perform: So dedicated is his following that there was literally not a line that wasn't also uttered by the audience.

Miller took advantage of their skills especially during "Party on Fifth Ave.," as they traded lines during the chorus. The loyal crowd seldom stayed still, dancing and fist-pumping their way through such tracks as a guitar-heavy "Smile Back" and standouts "Donald Trump" and "Frick Park Market."

Only adding to the concert's festive feel was the sing-along Mac performed in the middle of his set. Armed with only a Rickenbacker, Miller blazed through the choruses of such pop standards as Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and Biz Markie's "Just a Friend."

By night's end, the lights went up and friends high-fived, still ecstatic that they'd just seen their hero, their heavily tattooed peer who understands their obsessions and obstacles and assures them that, despite it all, everyone's due to have a "Best Day Ever."

That performance and many others have landed Mac a spot on this year's Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll. Support Miller (or your favorite rookie rapper) over on RapFix.MTV.com.

MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV's Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage.

30 Seconds To Mars Make History At Triumphant Show

Band entered the Guinness Book of World Records on Wednesday night at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom.

NEW YORK — For a band that, over the past three years, has been no stranger to adversity — everything from battles with their label to scraps with censors and the occasional stage collapse30 Seconds to Mars had probably never had to deal with the kind of trouble that occurred during the encore of their record-setting show Wednesday night in New York.

During the crashing crescendo of "Kings and Queens," a female fan was crushed against a barricade and required immediate medical assistance. "Queens" was the final song of the band's set, which was preceded by a lengthy presentation from the folks at Guinness World Records, who honored 30STM for Most Shows Played During An Album Cycle (309 was Guinness' count). Jared Leto invited fans to join them onstage for the finale. Spirits were high inside the Hammerstein Ballroom, and as "Queens" unfolded, they only got higher ... until Leto stopped the song and asked for medics to tend to the injured fan. After 20 solemn minutes, EMTs carried her away on a stretcher.

"As soon as she got oxygen, she sat up and is doing OK," 30STM's management told MTV News after the show. After getting the all-clear, 30 Seconds to Mars undauntedly finished the song and the night ended with the crowd triumphantly chanting its "woah-oh-oh" hook while streamers fell from the ceiling.

And not to downplay the severity of the situation, but it helped illustrate everything that made 30 Seconds to Mars' record-setting run with This Is War so unique. Their ability to overcome obstacles, their willingness to push on, and the otherworldly bond they share with their fans — displayed best when drummer Shannon Leto left the stage to assist the EMTs.

The band had already played more than 300 shows, and yet, they still pushed hard on Wednesday, imbuing songs like "Search and Destroy" and "Night of the Hunter" with walloping guitars, anthemic sing-along choruses and washes of spooky synths. Jared sprinted up and down the catwalk stage (not easy to do in a huge black cloak), shined a massive spotlight into the crowd to illuminate fans' faces, and even performed a few acoustic numbers mid-set. Shannon pounded his kit as sweat flew, and guitarist Tomo Milicevic crunched chords and charmed ethereal soundscapes out of his ax. It could have been show number one, not the final gig of a two-year trek.

Of course, 30STM's fans matched, if not doubled, the band's enthusiasm. There were signs in the audience touting the Detroit chapter of the Echelon, and at one point, Leto brought a fan onstage who had traveled all the way from Maryland. Every chorus was sung back to the band loudly, each massive chant repeated at top volume, and the opening chords of each new song greeted with squeals of delight. Fans reached skyward as confetti fell, and ooh-ed and aah-ed as lasers shot from the stage. This was definitely a celebration, in just about every conceivable way.

Not surprisingly, the band seemed genuinely touched and a tad nostalgic. Jared told fans that the Guinness award was theirs, too, shouting, "I want everyone in here to carry this with them for the rest of their lives," as he thrust the certificate above his head.

As if their record-setting tour didn't already tip you off to it, the rather frightening delay proved that 30STM are a band seemingly at their best when forced to push on. And on. And on.

Foster The People 'Don't Stop' Video: High-Speed Chase

Band gets creative in new clip, which features 'Precious' actress Gabourey Sidibe.
By James Montgomery

Photo: Columbia Records

You've probably heard Foster The People's new single "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)" in those Nissan commercials where a bunch fabulous-looking, creatively haired millennials cavort in the backseat and a voice-over guy burbles about stuff like "the most headroom per dollar of any car in America."

In a way, it is sort of the perfect song for selling modestly priced compact cars aimed at young adults with a few dollars to burn (a target demo that, given the current economic conditions, is admittedly pretty slight): bright and shiny and poppy, vaguely bloggy — if that's even a thing — impossible to place in any given genre or era, instantly disposable in all the best possible ways. You'd think there are ad agencies who spend millions of dollars researching these things or something.

Anyway, it's probably only a coincidence (at least I hope it is) that the video for "Don't Stop" — which premiered Thursday (December 8) on MTV.com — also involves a car. Though, in this case, it's an old beater of a hatchback, and instead of starring someone straight out of central casting, it inexplicably features "Precious" actress Gabourey Sidibe. Also, it's roughly 450 times more clever than those Nissan spots.

Part good old-fashioned car chase, part improbable love story, it's sort of an updated take on "Bonnie and Clyde," with frontman Mark Foster starring as a wanton driving instructor who absconds with a satchel of cash from the DMV (who knew they had that much loot on hand?) and tricks Sidibe into being his getaway driver — namely because the cops (played by his bandmates Mark Pontius and Cubbie Fink) are hot on his trail. Things go about as well as you'd expect, as Gabby nearly slams into a cop car, stalls out, and then, at Foster's insistence, blows through a red light. As the two battle for control of the wheel, the car blows through intersections, runs fellow motorists off the road, slams through barricades and eventually crashes through some scaffolding, covering their car in paint and finally drawing the attention of the fuzz.

From there, the clip switches into full-on action mode, with Sidibe and Foster outrunning the law with some off-roading moves and falling in love in the process. After some vehicular back-and-forth, the duo is finally nabbed, and as Foster is cuffed, Gabby decides to makes one last break for it — but not before stopping to plant a kiss firmly on Foster's lips. Of course, we also find out that the two officers who have been in pursuit share a rather special bond of their own, and as Sidibe guns it and disappears over the horizon, the clip ends. The whole thing is sweet, silly and delightfully over-the-top, and, after repeated viewings, one can only wonder: Why didn't Nissan think of this first?

Zac Efron, Jessica Biel, More Hit 'New Year's Eve' Debut

'You're hungry, you're like, 'My back's sore,' ' Biel jokes to MTV News of symptoms of wearing a baby bump in Gary Marshall flick.

On Wednesday, the cast of "New Year's Eve," Gary Marshall's latest ensemble flick, gathered at New York City's Ziegfeld Theatre for a Tribeca Film Institute benefit in celebration of the star-studded film's release. The follow-up to the director's box-office hit "Valentine's Day" has a similar theme: multiple plotlines told in a series of vignettes.

MTV News hit the black carpet, where we caught up with castmembers, including Zac Efron, who revealed to us that veteran actress Michelle Pfeiffer had a lot to do with convincing him to take on the part.

"It was great," Efron told MTV News of working with Pfeiffer. "I remember the first time I met her was on 'Hairspray,' and she's Michelle Pfeiffer — she had that aura, star aura — so I was always very nervous around her; [she's] very beautiful.

"We never really got the chance to connect on that movie," he explained of the 2007 musical. "So on this film, I remember I got a voicemail from her, and she said, 'Look, I would love to do this if you want to do it, and I want to take it to the next level.' And I'm like, 'I'm in 1,000 percent, and I love you so much, thank you so much for that voicemail. I can't wait, let's do it!' And here we are. It was a dream come true."

And Marshall seems to have made another dream come true for young actor Jake T. Austin, who has his first big-screen kiss in the flick with co-star Abigail Breslin. "We met each other hours before," Austin told us. "It was more like, 'Hi, nice to meet you, you ready?' But it was not that awkward, it was cool."

"It wasn't that awkward because we kinda didn't treat it like a big deal," Breslin added. "He was very sweet, he was a gentleman. It all went well. We just kinda treated it like it was no big deal."

Jessica Biel also hit the black carpet in a stunning, shimmery Valentino gown, a far different look than what she sports in the movie.

"I actually kind of enjoyed it," Biel said of wearing a baby bump for her pregnant character. "It was a strange thing. I didn't think I was going to feel as comfortable as I did with it. When you put that thing on, you start to rock with it: You're rubbing it. You're like, 'Wow this is not so bad after all.' You're hungry, you're like, 'My back's sore' — no, its not, you're faking it — but you still feel that these symptoms are happening to you, it just felt really natural."

MTV To Celebrate Year's Best Music

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 08:21 AM PST

Daily debates will pick best song, artist of the year.
By Gil Kaufman

There are a lot of things to celebrate this time of year. But when you spend all day (and some of the night) obsessing about music, naturally your thoughts turn to best-of lists as December dawns. That's why MTV and MTV.com will launch a weeklong celebration of the year in music on December 12 in which our experts will debate the year's best songs, artists and performances.

For the first time ever, MTV is corralling staffers from MTV News, MTV.com and MTV Music and Talent to collaborate on three different year-end lists: EDM (electronic dance artist of the year), song of the year and artist of the year. Beginning Monday, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET, during MTV's morning music hours on AMTV, editors from MTV News, MTV Music & Talent, and MTV.com will take part in a spirited debate, where they will reveal their collective choices for best EDM (electronic dance artist of the year), joined by MTV Iggy. On Wednesday, we'll unveil the Song of the Year and on Thursday we'll name our Artist of the Year.

During AMTV, the panel will count down their selections from #10 to #3, leaving the audience in limbo to debate the lists and ponder which acts will take the top spots. Each day at 4:59 p.m. ET, MTV News' Sway Calloway will reveal the top choices and present the award to the #1 pick. After the winner is revealed, the acceptance speech will run sporadically throughout our primetime hours. The debates will also be featured on mtvU and MTV Hits, and extensive news stories will be featured on MTV News and various MTV.com sites.

In addition to the panel-selected lists, for the first time, MTV is asking fans to vote on MTV's best live musical performance of the year and support their favorite artist and song by tweeting #MTVBest2011. The nominees span MTV's various award shows and concert series including MTV Video Music Awards, MTV Unplugged, mtvU Woodie Awards, O Music Awards, Live in NYC, Spring Break, mtvU Movies and Music Fest and Buzzworthy Live. Nominees include Adele's "Someone Like You" from the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Odd Future's "Sandwiches" and "Yonkers" from the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards, 30 Seconds to Mars' "Hurricane" from MTV Unplugged, Robyn's "Dancing on My Own" from the O Music Awards 2 and Two Door Cinema Club's "What You Know" from Live In NYC.

The top-voted performances will be revealed during MTV's AMTV between 8am-9am ET on Tuesday, December 14, with the two top fan selections revealed by Sway later that day at 4:59 p.m. ET.

Machine Gun Kelly Calls Hottest Breakthrough MC Nod 'An Honor'

Bad Boy signee MGK says, 'I want to be the hottest,' on MTV News' 2011 list — vote now!

Machine Gun Kelly went from a troubled youth trying to find his way in the streets of Cleveland to one of rap's top prospects in a year's time. Now, not only has the rapid-fire lyricist gone on to sign with Diddy's Bad Boy Records, he's already cutting records with Waka Flocka Flame and his idol, DMX. MGK has created so much of a stir in the rap game that he is now a nominee for MTV News' 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC.

"To be considered for the hottest breakthrough MC of 2011, it's obviously an honor, but I want to be the hottest. I've never been comfortable with sharing anything: I was a single child," Machine Gun Kelly said on Wednesday's "RapFix Live."

Kells began battle-rapping around 2004 while he was still in high school, and graduated to the studio in 2006 when he dropped his very first mixtape, Stamp of Approval. All the while, he struggled through school, but eventually graduated. Kells went on to work a few odd jobs and become a dad. In 2010, he dropped another tape, 100 Words and Runnin' — but it was with his second tape that year, Lace Up, that folks really began to take notice.

Songs like his hometown ode "Cleveland" and the heartfelt "End of the Road" went on to establish MGK as not only a relatable MC, but a fully capable spitter as well. Kells went on to tour and perform across the country, then in August, he announced on "RapFix Live" he had signed a deal with Diddy's Bad Boy Records.

Now MGK is putting the finishing touches on his debut, set to drop in 2012. One of the album's guests will be Kells' all-time favorite rapper, DMX. For MGK, recording with the dog was surreal. "I felt like he was going to think I was weird because I kept staring at him the whole time, 'cause I'm like, 'Dude, this is my idol,' " MGK said.

Each day, we'll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude December 13 when the polls close at 11:59 p.m.

Stick with MTV News as we profile the 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MCs before announcing the winner December 13 on "RapFix Live" — vote now!

Having already sufficiently fired up fans with a (thoroughly badass) teaser clip for their upcoming Reign of Terror album, Sleigh Bells are now revealing details about the disc — albeit in a slightly less radical way.

According to a press release issued by the band's publicist, Terror will hit stores February 14 (it's sure to be a bloody valentine) and features 11 tracks, with appropriately Sleigh Bells-y titles like "True Shred Guitar," "Demons" and "Road to Hell." It was produced by guitarist Derek E. Miller, and, as the press release puts it, features "songs that are as crushing and authoritative as their title suggests; they're effortlessly robust and heavier than any of the band's previous output ... the sonic equivalent of a beautiful shotgun to the head."

Now that's descriptive! The Bells will also embark on a tour leading up to the release of Terror, making stops all across Miller's home state of Florida (and nowhere else). The trek kicks off February 2 at the Florida Theatre in Gainesville, and they'll be taking fellow Floridian Diplo along for the ride, along with Brooklyn's Liturgy.

Reign of Terror is the follow-up to Sleigh Bells' breakout 2010 album Treats, which they rode to a thunderous performance at the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards and a collaboration with none other than Beyoncé (which, sadly, has never seen the light of day).

The track list for Sleigh Bells' Reign of Terror:

» "True Shred Guitar"
» "Born to Lose"
» "Crush"
» "End of the Line"
» "Leader of the Pack"
» "Comeback Kid"
» "Demons"
» "Road to Hell"
» "You Lost Me"
» "Never Say Die"
» "D.O.A."

Nicki Minaj took to Twitter on Wednesday to let her fans know she was on set with the one and only Madonna.

Minaj and Madonna were busy shooting the video for "Give Me All Your Love," the first single off Madge's forthcoming album. The fierce MC wasn't holding back on the social networking site, giving all her Barbz and Kenz the up-to-the-minute details of the shoot.

Minaj gushed about the shoot, even relaying one major detail that she hopes will make the final cut. She tweeted, "OH MY f'ingggg Gahhhh!!!!! MADONNA jus kissed me!!!!! On the lips!!!!!!! It felt sooooo good. Soooo soft!!!! *passes out* aaahhhhh!!!!!!!!!" That news immediately sent her fans on a Twitter spree, peppering the rapper with questions about the smooch.

M.I.A. also will appear on the track. The rapper confirmed she recorded with the Queen of Pop late last month in New York, after speculation about a collabo between the three women hit a fevered pitch in November. M.I.A. also tweeted about chilling with Madonna on set. "Madonna killed it! A legend! said she'd have me, i said ill have her too, we had a 3sum M.N.M. MEGAFORCE @TheMegaforce thanku," she wrote to the video director team.

A version of the demo first leaked in early November. It featured Madonna and Nicki, but not M.I.A. The leak may have pleased fans, but it left Madonna and her camp pretty unhappy. Shortly after the track hit the Web, Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary, took to Twitter to address the leak.

"The plan was for new music to come out in the new year," he said. "I'm very happy with the positive reaction to the demo, but we are very upset with whoever leaked the song!!!!!!!! we are asking that the fans please help us police any more leaks. we have a lot in store for you. but please respect the process."

Madonna, via Oseary, also expressed her feelings about the leak. "Madonna told me this morning 'my true fans wouldn't do this,' " he wrote. "Whoever is responsible for this leak, we ask that you please stop!"

The as-yet-untitled new album is expected to drop in the spring of 2012 and will feature production from Ray of Light producer William Orbit. Madonna will perform at the Super Bowl in February, which coincides with the release of her film "W.E."

'Walking Dead' Star Norman Reedus Talks Daryl Dixon's Appeal

'It's hard not to look cool while holding a crossbow,' Reedus says of Dixon, one of MTV News' Top 50 TV Characters of 2011.
By Josh Wigler

Norman Reedus
Photo: MTV News

Maybe it's the crossbow. Maybe it's his prickly disposition towards his fellow survivors, an armor he casts aside when lost little children are dropped into the mix. Or maybe it's just the simple fact that Norman Reedus is a bit of a badass. Whatever the reason (let's face it, it's the crossbow), there's no question that Daryl Dixon is the coolest character on "The Walking Dead." In fact, he's one of the coolest characters on television, evidenced by his #13 position on MTV News' Top 50 TV Characters of 2011 list.

It's a well-earned victory for the zombie-killing hillbilly: In one and a half seasons, we've seen Daryl bash zombie brains with rocks, slash open throats with double axes, and even hallucinate a conversation with his brother while killing even more zombies. Between all that, Daryl has spent much of the current second season searching tirelessly for the missing Sophia — a search that ended tragically during the midseason finale. Whether Sophia's death will push Daryl back to being the antisocial bully of yesterday or galvanize him even further as a protector of this group of survivors remains to be seen, but we can tell you this much: No matter where Daryl goes next, we'll be along for the ride.

Reedus swung by MTV News headquarters to talk about the awesomeness that is Daryl Dixon, touching upon the character's damaged past, his coolest kills and his future with the series.

MTV News: Fans have been hugely supportive of Daryl Dixon. Even ["Walking Dead" creator] Robert Kirkman has admitted that Daryl is a favorite of his. It just seems to be the general consensus that people love this character. What has the fan reaction been like in your experience?

Norman Reedus: Actually, walking across the street [in Times Square] just now, a cop grabbed me by the arm and said, "I love your character on 'The Walking Dead!' " I get it a lot, actually. I [even] have my own Daryl Dixon "Hello Kitty" iPhone case. It's been really good, you know? The fans really like Daryl, and I'm really appreciative.

MTV: What is it about Daryl Dixon that's just so f---ing cool?

Reedus: Well, it's hard not to look cool while holding a crossbow, first off. But he's interesting in that he has a different sort of struggle than anyone else. He's trying to just get along with people for the first time, I think. That one moment where Carol reaches down to kiss him on the forehead and he [recoils], he thinks he's about to get hit. There's this damaged thing about him that's really interesting. And when you have a backdrop like "The Walking Dead," it's even more powerful. But you have Rick and Shane fighting for what's the best thing in this group, and Daryl is just sort of trying to find his footing. He's not used to people telling him he's worth a damn. So once people start telling him that, his first reaction is fight or flight. He's such an interesting person. You could have that personality type in a Wall Street movie and he'd still be interesting.

MTV: You touched on it briefly, but this season has been largely about the struggle between Rick and Shane. Is this a world where you can spend multiple days searching for a missing girl — even though chances are good that she's dead in a barn next door — or is it time to abandon those values and forge ahead? Daryl seems to have come down on a side, with his whole mission this season focused on finding Sophia. What was his motivation there? Why was he so obsessed with finding Sophia?

Reedus: A couple of things. First off, in that scene I mentioned with Carol, I'm covered in scars. You couldn't see them super up close in that scene, but I'm shredded with scars. There's a backstory with Daryl that he was a beaten child and he was [abandoned], and I'm really trying to play that up. He's a very damaged person. When Sophia gets lost, he takes it upon himself to look for her, to clear up some of the demons he has. He took it very personally. Besides, he can handle himself in the woods. He doesn't really need these people for survival — he's looking at them for a very different kind of survival, for interaction that he's not used to, which is a new world for him. Looking for Sophia alone in the woods isn't a scary thing for him; he can go out there himself. But he took it personally because that girl represented something to him that was larger than just this world we're living in, trying to survive. He went after her with a lot of gusto.

MTV: Of course, we got an answer to Sophia's whereabouts, though it wasn't the answer Daryl was hoping for. Can you talk about that experience, shooting that scene in the barn and losing [actress Madison Lintz] from the cast?

Reedus: That day sucked, because I really like Madison. She's such a cool little girl. It was really emotional. Jon [Bernthal] had a lot of dialogue and was doing his amped-up thing. Melissa [McBride] was doing her emotional oh-my-god thing, and [Andrew Lincoln] was doing his "no, stop!" thing. [Chandler Riggs] was doing his "no, I can't believe that's true!" thing. And Daryl's just like, "Let's kill somebody!" Then [Sophia emerges] and there were a few different ways you could go. With Melissa running in, for Daryl to take her on — damaged people gravitate toward damaged people, and he took it upon himself to hold her. I know there are lots of rumors about [Daryl and Carol] having a romantic affair, but I think it's more than that. I think it's more of a protection thing, which I find much more interesting than kissy-kissy sexy-sex stuff. That day was big. It was a large day. We shot it for a few days, actually, to get it all down.

MTV: Daryl has made a lot of personal progress this season, but will Sophia's death set him back? How does he react to finding out that she's gone?

Reedus: It's going to be interesting. It sets him back in certain ways, in that the hope's gone. That little girl that he's looking for, if she's one of them, he doesn't really give a crap anymore. You can have these so-called leaders of the group saying "do this, do that," and he doesn't really need them anymore. So you find out that Daryl sort of separates himself a little bit. He reacts violently to anything emotional revolving around that story line. There's another side of that in that he's looked upon more as one of the leaders now, so there's a new set of responsibilities that Daryl has to deal with. Whether he wants them, whether he wants to take them, [is another story]. But it's interesting to see him looked upon as a leader. Fireworks fly. It's not necessarily something he wanted or asked for. He's not super thrilled about it.

MTV: Daryl has had some of the best zombie kills of the series. Which one was your favorite this season?

Reedus: Ooh. My best kill of the season? Well, I like last season, the double-ax to the throat. That was fun. [This season], I liked slashing the zombie churchgoer across the face; that was kind of fun. And I liked shooting the well-dressed zombie in the woods [in the season premiere], that was kind of fun too, then cutting his chest open and reaching inside of him, the gut bag. That was cool. That was a lot of fun. That was Andy and me being, "Ooh, gross!" You'd put your hand inside and it goes [makes a balloon deflating noise], and they put tubes of hot air that would blow in your face with gas inside the intestines. It was disgusting. [Co-executive producer and makeup effects designer] Greg Nicotero is completely twisted.

MTV: Looking beyond Daryl, this show has taken off in a big way. Ratings are huge, and it's been getting a lot of attention. Obviously you're very close to the show, but what's your take: Why is "Walking Dead" so huge?

Reedus: There's a whole thing about the economy that I've heard, that when the economy is bad, for some reason zombies and horror films are huge. Maybe that's part of something. But also because it's not really about zombies. It's about these people trying to get together and working together and making lives for themselves, whether life is even worth living anymore. There's this desperate smell in the air that people have to come together who won't normally come together, and I think that's the appeal, really. It's like that show "Survivor." These people try to figure it out, cut each other's throats, be a--holes here and there and rip each other off — that's part of it [on "Walking Dead"]. Plus, our special effects are so amazing. Our cinematography is so great. Our writing is really good. There are a lot of elements that have come together. It's more than just a zombie show. I think that's a big deal.
