'Glee' Star Cheers Up Our Top 50 TV Characters Of 2011

'Walking Dead' and 'Game of Thrones' standouts also among MTV News' favorite TV characters of the year.

From vampire/werewolf hybrids to food-hungry travel enthusiasts, MTV News' list of the 50 greatest television characters of the year has been an eclectic one, to say the least. And as we're winding down toward our final set of small-screen titans, the list is only getting weirder!

Want a military sniper-turned-gangster assassin with a half-blown-off face? We've got you covered. How about a zombie-killing hillbilly or a sword-wielding 9-year-old? That's taken care of too. From "The Walking Dead" to "Glee" and beyond, here's our next set of the year's best TV characters!

20. Walter Bishop, "Fringe"
If there's another television show featuring a mad scientist who achieves impossible feats of fringe-science lunacy while snacking on double-dipped beer-battered onion rings from Sully's in his Harvard laboratory (where the awesomely named Gene the cow lives), I'm not watching it. And frankly, I don't want to. Walter Bishop is the best man of science on TV since Jack Shephard, and I'm not just saying that because he reminds me way too much of my own weird dad. (Though, seriously, the similarities are eerie and I'm beginning to wonder whether I'm from a parallel universe. That's neither here nor there.) Walter is hilarious, heartbreaking and horrific all in one stroke, thanks to the unparalleled genius of John Noble and the "Fringe" writing staff, and the fact that Dr. Bishop isn't an Emmy-winning character is absolutely beyond me — but hey, he's solved weirder problems in the past. Give the man some time. -Josh Wigler

19. Wilfred, "Wilfred"
I am a dog person. That is a fact. I am such a dog lover, in fact, that I don't speak to them in stupid dog voices, because that is disrespectful. But assuming I did speak to my dog in a stupid dog voice, would he talk back in an Australian accent? No. Would he spend hours upon hours smoking weed? No. Nor does my dog appear to me as a 6-foot-2, 35-year-old, slightly overweight guy in a gray dog suit — no, that's all Wilfred, portrayed on the offbeat F/X series by Jason Gann. And that's exactly why he's on this list. -Brian Phares

See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 50 to 41, including a masked bachelor and dashing novelist/crime-fighter.

18. Elliot Stabler, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"
Have you been watching "SVU" lately and felt like something was missing? Well, that's because it is, and that something is the butt-kicking Elliot Stabler, a layered man who just wanted to serve justice and catch bad guys. When Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) exited the "SVU" scene earlier this year, the war on sex-related crimes was really lost — for the viewers, at least. Sure, Benson has our collective backs, but it's a two-person job, and currently we are down a man. -Jocelyn Vena

17. Richard Harrow, "Boardwalk Empire"
What could be cooler than an eye patch? How about a half face mask? Richard Harrow was made to be a fan favorite. He's a sympathetic character (a disabled WWI vet) who has a badass ability (sweet sniper skills). That's classic awesomeness algebra. Richard (played by Jack Huston on the HBO series) stole the show's first season, made the jump to series regular for the second and hasn't looked back once, if you'll forgive the pun. -Kevin P. Sullivan

16. Jenna, "Awkward."
Relatable teen characters are hard to come by unless you grew up on the Upper East Side or in a certain Beverly Hills zip code. So it's always refreshing to see a high-schooler just like us — or how we once were. Jenna (Ashley Rickards) struggles with the kind of issues we're all familiar with: identity, relationships and a newfound infamy thanks to her rumored suicide attempt. (OK, maybe not so much on that last item.) Regardless, Jenna is the sort of self-conscious everyteen we can't help but root for. -Amy Wilkinson

See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 40 to 31, including a "hootie hoo!"-hollering chef and funnyman talk-show host.

15. Randy Marsh, "South Park"
Everyone's favorite borderline-OCD, super-embarrassing, stereotypical I-will-punch-the-coach-in-the-face-if-he-doesn't-put-my-kid-in-the-game dad had to be included on our list, because, let's face it, every season of "South Park," we are just praying for that one, always amazing Randy Marsh episode. Crème fraiche, anyone? Best condiment ever. -Brian Phares

14. Scott Disick, "Keeping Up With the Kardashians"
The man has cheated on his girlfriend, punched mirrors in rage, stuffed hundred-dollar bills down waiters' throats and battled with alcoholism and a bad attitude for many seasons on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" — yet he's also managed to score the second hottest of the K clan (Kourtney, if you were unsure), and audiences can't seem to get enough of Scott Disick's shenanigans. We're not even sure if he has a real job, but why does he need one? Piggybacking off your girlfriend and entertaining the heck out of the folks at home all the while seems a job in itself. Scott has become a welcome part of the Kardashian franchise, appearing in spin-offs like "Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami" and "Kourtney and Kim Take New York," and, unlike Kris Humphries, we hope he sticks around for good. -Natasha Chandel

13. Daryl Dixon, "The Walking Dead"
Zombies really do deserve to die. They're terrible. This is pretty much fact. So the world needs someone to kill them. And that someone, thankfully, is the one-and-only Daryl Dixon, played by the incredible Norman Reedus. There are few men in this world who manage to look so good while killing the living dead, and he is one of those men. He may actually be the top guy. So thank you, Daryl Dixon, for doing us all a favor and helping us live a little longer. -Jocelyn Vena

Check out our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 30-21, including a depressed meth cook and a football coach with a heart of gold.

12. Arya Stark, "Game of Thrones"
My love for Arya Stark — a.k.a. Cat of the Canals, Nan and No One — knows no bounds. As a devout reader of George R.R. Martin's brilliant books, it's difficult to limit my explanation of Arya's awesomeness to only the first season of HBO's award-winning TV adaptation, but this fearless, sassy, hero-in-the-making is a scene and series stealer. And she's only 9 years old! Arya (played by Maisie Williams) has enough charisma and sword-fighting skill to hopefully do some major damage in the future. Honorable mention: Needle — stick 'em with the pointy end! -Kara Warner

11. Santana, "Glee"
If any story arc has kept Gleeks from changing the channel, it's surely sassy, slam-ready Santana's struggle to accept her sexuality while taking her deserved spot at center stage in McKinley High's new glee club, the Trouble Tones. Once simply a vehicle for ridiculous one-liners, Santana (Naya Rivera) has grown to become a multifaceted character that's anything but a caricature — even if her #1 Latina, Paul Abdul, is actually Arabic. -Amy Wilkinson

'New Year's Eve' Stars Offer More Holiday Movie Ideas

Following 'Valentine's Day' and 'New Year's,' Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel come up with some new ideas.

With the release of this year's most star-studded romantic comedy, "New Year's Eve," just a day away, it's time to consider what holiday director Garry Marshall might tackle next in order to add to his holiday-themed ensemble canon, which also includes last year's hit "Valentine's Day."

When MTV News caught up with a few of the stars of "New Year's Eve," we asked them to put their thinking caps on to select a worthy and appropriate holiday to write around. The task proved slightly difficult, in that not all holidays are universally celebrated and accepted.

"I was actually thinking about that yesterday," Katherine Heigl said. "It has to be universal so it can sell domestically and internationally. But what are other holidays that the whole world celebrates? Thanksgiving is out, Christmas, I guess he could do Christmas, but now that he's done New Year's Eve, can you do it in reverse? I don't know. Well, I know Columbus Day is out, President's Day is out, Memorial Day? Doesn't everyone celebrate that?"

Like Heigl, Josh Duhamel seemed to have already put thought into the question as well.

"St. Patrick's Day, yes. It's about a crazy little leprechaun in Ireland," he said. "Does everyone celebrate St. Patrick's Day? You got to pick a holiday that everybody celebrates. We couldn't do Columbus Day; even Canadians don't celebrate that."

"Veterans Day," offered Jake T. Austin. "I think the next film I got offered was Christmas Eve," he joked. "Let's do it, I'm ready!"

Check out everything we've got on "New Year's Eve."

Coldplay Announce 2012 North American Tour

Band will kick off Mylo Xyloto tour on April 17.
By Gil Kaufman

They've teased us all year with spot festival dates, but beginning April 17 Coldplay will launch their first proper North American tour in three years when they hit the stage in Edmonton, Alberta to promote their latest, Mylo Xyloto.

With three Grammy nominations under their belt -- two for "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" and one for "Paradise" -- the band will be on the road from April through August in the U.S. and Canada, currently slated to wrap things up at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on August 11.

Before they pack up their road cases, they will drop the third single from the album, "Charlie Brown," which goes to radio later this month. They will also appear on the first-ever 90-minute episode of the world's longest-running live music TV series, "Austin City Limits".
They'll ring in the new year on the program, which will air on PBS station nationwide on December 31 beginning at 11 p.m. "Coldplay New Year's Eve: An Austin City Limits Special" can also be viewed on demand on www.pbs.org starting at 11 p.m. ET that evening.

If you didn't get a chance to catch any of Coldplay's festival appearances earlier this year, singer Chris Martin promises that the new Xyloto songs will fit in with their soaring catalog, but might also feel a bit ... different. "It's definitely a schizophrenic album ... it keeps changing sounds," he told MTV News. "That's why we called it such a strange thing, Mylo Xyloto. Because we felt like so many people have already made up their minds about us, both good and bad, that we can sort of start again from scratch and try and reflect all the music we listen to and we love."

And while you may not see album guest Rihanna hop up on stage with the band during the outing to sing "Princess of China"
, there's a shot you might see them do their take on her current hit, "We Found Love," which they covered on BBC Radio 1
 recently.

Dates for Coldplay Mylo Xyloto North American tour:
April 17 - Edmonton, AB @ Rexall Place
April 18 - Calgary, AB @ Scotiabank Saddledome
April 20 - Vancouver, BC @ Rogers Arena
April 24 - Portland, OR @ Rose Garden Arena

Drake's Boy The Weeknd Drops My Favorite 2011 Album

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 03:53 AM PST

Lil Wayne sold a milli, the Throne made history and Drake took great care crafting his LP, but House of Balloons tops this MTV News writer's list.
By Rob Markman

There was no shortage of high-profile 2011 album releases. When all is said and done, Jay-Z and Kanye West's team-up Watch the Throne, Lil Wayne's platinum-plus Tha Carter IV and Drake's Take Care will most likely define the year in hip-hop — the genre I love, champion and cover here for MTV News. I've purchased, rode out to and enjoyed all of those albums, but when I think of the album I connected with the most in 2011, the Weeknd's soul-drenched debut, House of Balloons, tops my Best of 2011 list.

The Weeknd got a hell of a push after fellow Canadian Drake tweeted, "Bring your love baby I could bring my shame," a line from "Wicked Games," the standout track from House of Balloons. Released in March, HoB is a soulful string of nine sexual-yet-tragic hymns. It's sex, drugs and rock and roll, but with a twist.

Produced by Doc McKinney, Zodiac and Illangelo, House of Balloons starts with the mood-setting "High for This." Over a buzzing bass and thudding drums, the Weeknd wails with an emotiveness reminiscent of Prince. Throughout the track, the singer (born Abel Tesfaye) coaches his nervous lover, likening his sexual prowess to a drug. It's isn't all chocolates and roses, however. Actually, things get dangerous as he warns, "Hold tight for this ride, we don't need no protection," before bellowing, "Trust me, girl, you wanna be high for this."

Throughout the LP, Tesfaye puts his risquéé lifestyle on display, and therein lies the appeal. Much like how gangsta rap is credited with bringing suburban kids close enough to the danger without ever having to fully experience the consequences, the Weeknd sings of rampant drug use and free love without fear of judgment or penalty. It's a lifestyle typically enjoyed by freewheeling artists and one that remains a fantasy for 9-to-5ers and family men. I guess the grass is always greener.

With "What You Need," he goes after another man's woman, and as much as we'd like to deny it or be politically correct, at one time or another, we've all schemed on someone else's pot of honey. The Weeknd draws strength from singing what most dare not say. We all like to listen and say it's just music, but it really isn't. I mean, who really tells their partner, "I always want you when I'm coming down"?

On "Coming Down" the emerging rock star admits that when he's out partying, popping pills and getting high, he forgets about the woman who has always been there for him through thick and thin. In fact, he starts by singing, "I got something to tell you, but I don't know how to say it" — and then he just blurts it out.

Not much is known about Tesfaye. He is a 21-year-old Canadian singer whose family hails from Ethiopia. His story, however, is all too familiar, even to those too ashamed to admit it. Take the slow-rolling "Wicked Games," for example. On the rock-tinged ballad, the Weeknd admittedly empties his bank account in search of a love he knows can't and won't last. He croons anyway and consciously plays pretend just to build his confidence after a bad breakup. "So tell me you love me ... even though you don't love me," he begs a stripper, who will oblige until the money runs out.

It's a sad reality for some and a lush fantasy for others. For Tesfaye, it just seems to be life as he knows it. On the outside, the House of Balloons looks like a great place to visit, but maybe just for the weekend.

Then, it's back to reality.

MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV's Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage.

'X Factor': Chris Rene's Original Song Wins The Night

Josh Krajcik also impresses judges with the Beatles' 'Something.'

Nicole Scherzinger coined the term "Krajcik Magic" on Wednesday's (December 7) "X Factor," but it was Chris Rene who worked his mojo the hardest, arguably winning the night with his show-closing original, "Where Do We Go From Here."

Rene's performance finished out a night that saw the top five contestants performing two songs apiece: one dance hit and one song of each contestant's choosing.

The episode's drama (because what would "The X Factor" be without a little drama?) came from an "error in communication" that saw the contestants having to switch up their final songs with only 24 hours' notice. How would they perform under the pressure? Would they remember their lyrics? And what kind of crazy hyperbole would Paula Abdul heap upon the contestants?

Turns out they all handled the twist pretty well, with Rene stealing the evening with his original song. Cross-legged and strumming an acoustic guitar, Rene seemed perfectly at ease with "Where Do We Go From Here," which brought to mind his initial audition when he performed another original, "Young Homie." "Where Do We Go From Here" had a laid-back, easygoing vibe and wouldn't have felt out of place being released on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records. Simon Cowell remarked that at this point in the competition, performing an original is either "stupidity or a stroke of genius." He ended up calling it the latter, with Rene reacting by jumping up and down in place.

Up until Rene's finale it appeared to be Josh Krajcik's night, even though it started out shaky with a so-so orchestral take on Rihanna's "We Found Love." But he came around on his second song, punching up the Beatles' "Sometimes" and having Scherzinger call him "the male Adele in the industry right now" before coining the term "Krajcik Magic." Abdul literally couldn't find the words to sing his praises, telling the burrito maker, "Adjectives just don't describe your brilliance anymore, they just don't measure up." (Note: Will someone please lend Paula a thesaurus?)

Speaking of Adele, Melanie Amaro opened the show with a clubby take on the Brit soul singer's "Someone Like You" and later took on Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey's "When You Believe." Those are three gigantic singers to tackle over the course of a season let alone a single night, but Amaro acquitted herself nicely, with Cowell calling her "outstanding" and urging viewers to pick up their phones to vote so he doesn't end up with another situation like he had with Drew last week.

Bubbly 13-year-old Rachel Crow chose B.o.B and Bruno Mars' "Nothin' on You" for her opener and returned to last week's Michael Jackson theme for "Music & Me" for her second performance of the evening. To say Abdul was ecstatic about the two songs would be an understatement. "Your vocal depth transcends all generations" she told Crow after the former, while explaining to her, "You are a wonderful role model. You are every girl's best friend and every parent's daydream. You are fantastic and magical," after the second. Did we mention Abdul also called her "beautifully fearless"?

Marcus Canty, who has landed in the bottom two the last two weeks in a row, took on Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" and Leon Russell's "A Song for You." The first song played more to his strengths, while the second honed in on his vocals, which often suffer in comparison to his abilities as an all-around entertainer. Cowell blew off the second song as "a bit boring," but Canty's mentor, L.A. Reid, compared his ability to get up after getting knocked down to no less than Muhammad Ali. "I've got your back," Reid told him. But do voters?

One artist is scheduled to be sent home on Thursday's episode of "The X Factor."

Willow Smith And Nicki Minaj Heat Up 'Fireball' Video

Don't let Willow Smith's age fool you: This on-the-rise starlet already knows how to command the center of attention. Her fiery presence is evident in her new "Fireball" video, featuring Nicki Minaj, which premiered Wednesday (December 7) on BET's "106 & Park."

Directed by Roman Lee, "Fireball" is a simplistic take on Smith's sassy and youthful energy. It begins with a shot of a deserted sidewalk and cuts to a scene of the 11-year-old singer in front of blazing flames in an elaborately decked out ensemble, including a headpiece. As dancers perform a choreographed routine, Smith is seen strutting down the street with everlasting swag and attitude.

"Since I landed here, I gon' phone up a Obama/ Shook the world up, now I caused a little drama/ Leader of the new school, and yes I'm gonna light up the block to the stage when I wanna," she sings.

It's not long before Young Willow also shows her dancing skills when she joins in on the extravaganza, throwing in a few hair whips here and there. Minaj visits the street takeover soon after in an over-the-top dress made of fluorescent-colored teddy bears and matching fur boots. While streetlights glimmer on the wet pavement, the Young Money diva dances beside the singer as she spits her guest verse.

In a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest, Smith gushed about working with the Harajuku Barbie, saying, "Nicki Minaj is absolutely an amazing person. She has so much energy, and working with her was like just [a] spark. We were coming together with all our art and everything, and it was amazing."

"Fireball" is Smith's latest single from her debut album, Willow: You Think You Know Me, which is scheduled to hit stores April 3. It's been just about two months since the pintsize starlet dropped the Stoopid Robots-produced tune.

'X Factor' Sneak Peek: A Slew Of Dancers, And A Guitar!

Simon Cowell tells MTV News he has recovered after Drew Ryniewicz's shocking elimination last week.
By Jim Cantiello

MTV News' own Jim Cantiello is exclusively covering "The X Factor" rehearsals. Read on for his fly-on-the-wall backstage report!

LOS ANGELES — Breaking news from "The X Factor" set: They've moved the craft service table to a secret undisclosed location. Who knew fruit roll-ups, granola bars and coffee had so much in common with Dick Cheney?

In all seriousness, things are tense in the "X Factor" world. The contestants are still processing last week's shocking double-elimination. With two of the early front-runners gone, it's anyone's $5 million contract to win, and the five remaining singers know it — as does judge Simon Cowell, who was spotted having a cigarette break with a contestant with whom he hadn't interacted much previously. The words, "You could very well win it all," might have been uttered.

Speaking of Simon, Mr. X has cooled down considerably since last Thursday's live-TV fit, but he has yet to say one word to fellow judges Paula Abdul or Nicole Scherzinger after they axed contestant Drew Ryniewicz, one of his favorites. However, Simon said in an interview — slated to premiere on the live preshow around 7 p.m. ET tonight on TheXFactorUSA.com — that he's totally over it, respects his fellow judges for following their hearts, and has no ill will toward them.

Meanwhile, his remaining singers — Melanie Amaro and Rachel Crow — told the press that Simon's been way more open to their suggestions since the Drew drama went down. Something tells me we'll see them stretch big time tonight.

Another contestant tried something new during rehearsals: a guitar! Things didn't work out at first. After a couple of run-throughs, the contestant's mentor immediately nixed the strumming. But by Tuesday's camera rehearsals, the guitar was back. Will the risk pay off?

On the lot, I spied another mentor's contestant having a deep chat inside Simon's trailer. I tracked down Cowell later to see if he was feeding the competition some bad advice or playing mind games, but Simon insists his door is open for all the contestants if they're feeling stressed or overwhelmed. The tea gets brewed, a pep talk is had, and all is right in the world again.

I've had Simon's famous ginger tea, by the way, and let me tell you: It could solve all of the world's problems. It's that good. The first sip stings, and then a sweetness takes over. It's like Simon Cowell in a glass!

I'm not allowed to reveal song choices, but I can tell you that one singer is performing an inescapable ballad from 2011 that might not be recognizable after the show's retooling. All I can say is: Brian Friedman is employing tons of dancers for this particular number. (Ooh, I just spied choreographer Sonya Tayeh working with Brian too.)

On the flipside, another contestant is re-imagining a recent uptempo radio hit as a ballad. In other words, expect lots of cool twists on your fave songs this week.

Now if only the crew could find that elusive crafty table.

Catch Jim on "The X Factor Pepsi Preshow Live," streaming at 7 p.m. ET tonight on TheXFactorUSA.com!

Rick Ross, Drake, Wiz Khalifa Lead 2012 Mixtapes

With our awards for 2011's best online release in the rearview, Mixtape Daily selects next year's most anticipated.

Mixtape Daily: Most Anticipated Tapes Of 2012
2011 has been notable for hip-hop mixtape releases. Veteran artists like Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy released mixtapes Sorry 4 the Wait and The Real Is Back, respectively, to build anticipation for their major-label albums. Pusha T and 2 Chainz used their '11 tapes to brand themselves as soloists after breaking out from their respective Clipse and Playaz Circle roots, while Future and A$AP Rocky emerged as two of the year's top newcomers.

So with the past 12 months almost completely in our rearview, Mixtape Daily looks ahead to 2012 in anticipation of some upcoming gems.

Rick Ross and Drake's Y.O.L.O. (You Only Live Once)
Their chemistry is undeniable. After getting together on songs like "Aston Martin Music," DJ Khaled's "I'm On One" and "Lord Knows" (the latter off Drizzy's Take Care), Drake and Ricky Rozay are planning to hook up on a tag-team mixtape. At first, it sounded as if this was one of those dream collaborations that gets talked about but never executed, but both Drake and Ross have separately confirmed the project. "It's official, the music is most definitely official," Ross assured MTV News. "But, you know, me being a boss, I'm trying to find a way that we could put that on the shelves for the world, baby. But it's most definitely official."

Lil Wayne, A$AP Rocky, Wale and more took prizes for Best 2011 Mixtapes!

Fabolous' There Is No Competition 3 (Death Comes in 3s)
Funeral Fab is going back in. In 2011, he took a break from his There Is No Competition series and instead offered up The S.O.U.L. Tape, but on last month F-A-B-O tweeted an update: "There Is No Competition 3 — Death Comes In 3's.... Coming Soon #TiNc3[." Niiiiiiiice.

Wiz Khalifa's Taylor Allderdice
In 2010, Wiz brought us the modern-day classic Kush and Orange Juice. This year, he not only dropped the much darker Cabin Fever, he also released his debut album, Rolling Papers. Next up is Khalifa's ninth solo mixtape, Taylor Allderdice, named after his Pittsburgh high school. In preparation for the tape, the TGOD captain has already released a smoked-out video for "Dessert," his take on Wale's "Bait."

Big Sean's FFOE (Finally Famous Over Everything)
Snagging a #1 rap hit this year hasn't curbed Big Sean's hunger. Before he drops his sophomore LP in 2012, the G.O.O.D. Music spitter will release FFOE. "I feel like a lot of people who get to put albums out either forget about the mixtape circuit or disregard it. But I know that's what got me here, the mixtapes," Sean recently told "RapFix Live." "I was able to sell out shows doing mixtapes, so I don't take that lightly. I'm working on the new mixtape, putting real time into it."

Big K.R.I.T.'s 4Eva & a Day
With his previous mixtapes — K.R.I.T. Wuz Here, 2011 Mixtape Daily favorite ReturnOf4Eva — K.R.I.T. has set a standard that focuses on high-quality production and album-style attention to detail. Now, the Mississippi upstart can boast one of the game's most anticipated major-label debuts with his upcoming Live From the Underground. But before that, K.R.I.T. will drop 4Eva & a Day as a free online download. "Based off the experience of touring in the past year, I'm creating this free album from scratch as we speak," he told Pitchfork. "I have locked myself back in the studio — 4Eva & a Day coming soon on bigkrit.com."

Kendrick Lamar Kicks Off Hottest Breakthrough MCs!

Cali MC got a boost from Drake and Dr. Dre, but he didn't rely on co-signs to make MTV News' 2011 Hottest Breakthrough list — vote now!
By Rob Markman

The year started off with a bang for Kendrick Lamar. After appearing on the cover of XXL's Freshmen issue and in MTV News' New West coverage, the Compton, California, MC proceeded to show and prove.

Now, K. Dot is a 2011 MTV News Hottest Breakthrough MC candidate.

He may have received a co-sign from Dr. Dre, but Kendrick didn't use the Doc's glowing endorsement as a crutch. Instead, he hit the studio and in July released Section.80, a tightly woven independent album on which he examined his place in the world. Songs like the J. Cole-produced "HiiiPower," the soulful "Kush & Corinthians" and the socially enlightening "Ronald Reagan Era" proved that not only is Kendrick one of the most exciting newcomers, he also has substance to rival most veterans. Not just message-heavy, Section.80 also displayed Lamar's ability to spit raw rhymes on "Rigamortus" and "The Spiteful Chant."

Kendrick — who made his name releasing free music online — for the first time set a price point with Section.80 and sold it on iTunes. It was another mark of his growth.

"It was something that I had to understand, that my company had to make me understand. I'm putting out this free music, constantly putting it out," Lamar told MTV News back in July of his old way of thinking. "My whole thing is bringing music back to where people actually buy it, but at the same time, you know what? I don't think I'm ready yet to start selling my project, because I feel the world don't know me yet."

This year, thanks to his hustle, drive and, of course, overall talent, Kendrick is in contention. Aside from his solo material, the nimble-tongued MC has been working with Dre on Detox and landed key appearances on Game's The R.E.D. Album, TechN9ne's All 6's and 7's and his own solo track "Buried Alive" on Drake's Take Care. In fact, Drizzy has taken such a liking to Kendrick that he has booked the budding MC to open for him during his Club Paradise Tour in 2012.

Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established in 2010 by MTV News as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year, you can vote for Kendrick (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com, and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results.

Each day, we'll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude December 13 when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during December 14's "RapFix Live," during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News' upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate.

To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010's Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won't be part of this conversation.

Tom Cruise Talks 'Top Gun 2': 'We're Working On It'

'I hope we can figure this out to go do it again,' Cruise tells MTV News.

"We're working on it."

That's the official word on "Top Gun 2," straight from the star himself, Tom Cruise, who spoke with MTV News' Josh Horowitz during an event in Dubai for

In the fourth "M:I" movie, Cruise returns as castoff secret agent Ethan Hunt — the only character he has ever revisited during his decades-long career. The question remains: Will he ever don the Navy jumpsuit again and hop into a cockpit as Maverick?

A little more than a year ago, the Internet went abuzz with rumors about Cruise, director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer reuniting for a potential "Top Gun" sequel. Scott confirmed he would be directing, but Cruise's involvement remained a mystery.

When Christopher McQuarrie, the writer of "The Usual Suspects" and the man hired to pen the script for "Top Gun 2," said Maverick would be the lead for the follow-up, all engines seemed go. But then things went quiet. As the major players moved on to other projects — including "One Shot," directed by McQuarrie and starring Cruise — sequel talk died down.

When Horowitz sat down with Cruise in Dubai, the actor updated the project's status and shed new light on the script. "I don't think Chris [McQuarrie] is going to write it," Cruise said. "Chris is directing 'One Shot' right now, which I'm acting. We've got to go back in January and finish it."

With McQuarrie out, that leaves Cruise, Scott and Bruckheimer as the only major players left with the project, but Cruise insists he could still do a sequel.

"I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since 'Days of Thunder,' " Cruise said. "Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be ... what we could do now.' "

For Cruise, the two key elements to a sequel would be a worthy script and the freedom to make the movie as they did in 1986. "I hope we can figure this out to go do it again," he said. "If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot 'Top Gun.' "

Blink-182's 'After Midnight' An 'Homage' To 'I Miss You'

Tom DeLonge jokes that his and Mark Hoppus' lyrics are about 'me and him kissing and making love to each other.'

Blink-182's Neighborhoods album was rather famously recorded in fits and starts, so it's sort of odd to learn the story behind "After Midnight," the latest single from the disc, because, unlike pretty much everything else, this one was easy.

" 'After Midnight' was one of the last songs that we actually wrote for the album, and it originated from a beat that Travis [Barker] made up one day when he was working in the studio," Mark Hoppus told MTV News on the set of the "Midnight" video in California. "We went in, listened to the beat, [and] it grabbed us immediately. It was one of those moments on the album where everybody just had a bunch of ideas all at once, and it came together pretty quickly. I think like in two or three hours, we had the basics of the song all written out."

"Midnight" is like most older Blink songs in its speedy creation, and its similarities with the band's back catalog don't end there: Much like "I Miss You," a single from Blink's 2003 self-titled album, the lyrics were handled by both Hoppus and DeLonge.

"Tom and I divided the responsibility of writing the lyrics — Tom did the verses and I did the chorus — and we didn't necessarily know what the other was writing about, but it fit together pretty well," Hoppus explained.

And DeLonge took things one step further by including lyrical nods to "I Miss You" in his verses on "Midnight."

Of course, he explained, that was only mostly intentional. And it's not that he's running out of ideas, he said.

"Well, maybe a little bit, but not totally," DeLonge said. "I threw in a little homage to 'I Miss You,' because, specifically on this song, I remember Travis saying that we should have something in the category of 'I Miss You' [on this album], and that's when he showed us the beat. So when we wrote that, I remember that was in my mind."

Then again, DeLonge said he had ulterior motives for co-writing the song with Hoppus — ones that bordered (of course) on the sexual.

"What's cool about this song and 'I Miss You,' when Mark and I both write lyrics in different places, they come together and they're both about the same thing, usually me and him kissing and making love to each other," he laughed. "We end up writing super romantic songs. And I think it worked out really good on this one."

'Avengers' Trailer Tops 2011 Marvel Movie Moments

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 02:34 AM PST

First look and Robert Kirkman's subsequent commentary top our list of the greatest Marvel moments of the year.
By Josh Wigler

With "The Avengers" finally assembling in just a few months and other properties like "Spider-Man" and "Ghost Rider" swinging back into theaters as well, it's looking like a very bright 2012 for the Marvel brand. But don't discount the power of 2011: From Captain America throwing his mighty shield to Thor striking lightning at the box office, it was an awesome year for the House of Ideas.

From new releases and trailers to casting and crew announcements, these are our 10 favorite Marvel movie moments of 2011.

10. "First Class" Trailer Does Not Suck
The "First Class" production horror stories were quite troubling to read about during the latest "X-Men" movie's development, but that very first trailer more than cooled our fears. Matthew Vaughn's exploration of mutant-kind in the psychedelic '60s looked way up our alley based on that one trailer — and thankfully, we weren't disappointed when the movie arrived a few months later.

9. "Wolverine" Director Drama
We're still nursing our wounds over losing director Darren Aronofsky from "The Wolverine," but we won't deny that the drama was interesting to observe. Thankfully, the story has a happy ending: Though Aronofsky won't sink his claws into the Hugh Jackman superhero flick, "3:10 to Yuma" director James Mangold is coming aboard to save the day. We can't wait to see what the newly minted "Wolverine" director has up his sleeve.

8. David Slade Finds "Daredevil"
Likewise, we're thoroughly psyched about "Eclipse" and "30 Days of Night" filmmaker David Slade heading to Hell's Kitchen for Fox's planned "Daredevil" reboot. Even though we don't know who he has in mind to play the Man Without Fear, Slade's plans to adapt Frank Miller's classic "Born" story line are appealing enough all on their own.

7. "Avengers" Gets Conned
We weren't exactly thrilled about the lack of "Avengers" at San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, but the team at Marvel more than made up for that absence by attending the D-23 Expo and New York Comic Con a few months later. Featuring several of the film's castmembers and presenting never-before-seen footage to an incredibly lucky crowd, both of the year's major "Avengers" convention appearances proved to be valuable sources of information for fans of the upcoming superhero epic.

6. Spidey-Vision
The "Amazing Spider-Man" teaser trailer released in July got our spider-senses tingling, and not necessarily for the right reasons. The trailer-ending POV sequence was a divisive creative decision, and the darker tone the reboot seems to be striving for didn't sit well with everybody. That said, our curiosity about Andrew Garfield's take on Peter Parker has never been higher, and it's all thanks to that trailer's existence.

5. Ghost Rider Pees Fire
'Nuff said.

4. "Thor" and "Captain America" Arrive
Finally, after years of waiting for the other core members of the Avengers squad to make their big-screen arrivals, we finally got our wish with this summer's "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger." Chrises Hemsworth and Evans absolutely nailed it as the Asgardian warrior and super-soldier, respectively, and their return to theaters in next summer's "Avengers" can't possibly come soon enough.

3. "X-Men" Is "First Class"
If the "First Class" trailer hadn't already sold us on the Professor X and Magneto origin story, the movie itself sold us twice. "X-Men" was the surprise comic book hit of the year, if not commercially, then at least creatively. Brimming with phenomenal performances from Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Kevin Bacon, packed with outstanding action (Azazel FTW!) and clever connections to the pre-existing "X-Men" movie universe, "First Class" is my personal pick for best comic book movie of 2011. It's that good.

2. Earth's Mightiest Trailer
Ever since Nick Fury uttered the words "Avengers initiative" at the end of "Iron Man," we've been waiting for this trailer to drop. Finally, it did, and Joss Whedon's take on Earth's Mightiest Heroes looks even more awesome than it did in our dreams. May 4 cannot come soon enough.

1. Earth's Mightiest Trailer Commentary
OK, the only thing better than the "Avengers" trailer? "Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman's "Avengers" trailer commentary. If you haven't seen it yet, behold the hilarity for yourself in the video above.

Check out everything we've got on "The Avengers."

Meek Mill Shows Who's 'Boss' As Hottest Breakthrough MC Candidate

Rick Ross protégé's inescapable 'Ima Boss' and a grinding flow helped land him on MTV News' 2011 Hottest Breakthrough list — vote now!

This past summer, it would've been difficult to miss Meek Mill's hit single "Ima Boss" unless you were actively boycotting the radio, the Internet and clubs. In just 12 months, the Philadelphia rapper has catapulted himself from local fixture to artist set to drop his 2012 major-label debut via Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group. His power moves have also established him as a candidate for MTV News' 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC.

After his 2010 performance at the annual Powerhouse concert in Philly, the 24-year-old had a brief encounter with Rick Ross that would eventually lead to a deal on Rozay's MMG label. Meek Mill's street bangers "Ima Boss" and "Tupac Back" were two of the standout cuts from the MMG compilation album Self Made Vol. 1, released this spring, with the remix of "Ima Boss" commanding features from Lil Wayne, T.I., Swizz Beatz and, of course, Ross.

The MMG rookie's August mixtape Dreamchasers further cemented his status as one of the most talented and determined young MCs in the game. In addition to the popular singles "House Party" (featuring Young Chris) and "Work" (with Rick Ross), the street-savvy rapper showcased his raw talent for vivid storytelling on the track "Tony Story," a dark tale of a friendship turned sour over money.

Despite his upward moves, Meek has firmly held onto his loyal Philadelphia fanbase, who came out to support him when he returned to this year's Powerhouse show as an official MMG soldier. His debut solo album is expected to drop by summer 2012, and both Meek and Ross have promised that it will be "a classic." During MTV2's Sucker Free Awards last week, he took home the prize for "Who's Got Next: Best Artist Without an Album." Can he also take home the top prize for Hottest Breakthrough MC?

Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established in 2010 by MTV News as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done and the votes were tallied, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang general beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year you can go vote for Kendrick (or their favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com, and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results.

Each day we'll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude on December 13 when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during December 14's "RapFix Live," where he will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement concerning MTV New' upcoming "Hottest MCs in the Game" list and debate. To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010's Hottest Breakthrough MC poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration.

Just a month after posing for Playboy, Lindsay Lohan's cover has hit the Net.

On the cover, posted by "The Insider," Lohan appears fully nude in front of a red backdrop, her assets strategically covered by a chair in the shape of the magazine's iconic bunny ears, leaving mostly everything to the imagination. The cover is definitely a throwback to the vintage shoots from the magazine's early days.

Photos: The highs and lows of Lindsay Lohan.

Lohan, who faced a number of legal battles this year, will sit down with Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show December 15 to open up about the headline-making photo shoot for the January/February issue. According to the magazine rep, the "Ellen" stop is the only interview Lohan will give to promote the issue. During her chat, she will reveal another image from the magazine. She was originally slated to debut the cover on the show as well before it leaked online.

In an interview with "The Insider" in November, Lindsay's mom, Dina, opened up about her daughter's decision to pose for the magazine. "It will be tastefully done," Dina explained. "She's been working in front of the camera with Ford Models since she was a little girl, so she kinda knows how to work that."

E! News reported at the time of the November photo shoot that Lohan had to pose a second time for the magazine after her first shoot didn't get the seal of approval from Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The source added that while the photos needed to be reshot, Lohan would be keeping one thing the same: She wouldn't appear fully nude in the issue.

A rep for the magazine had not responded to MTV News' request for comment about the leaked cover by press time.

Lady Gaga Is 'Fearless' In 'Marry The Night' Video

Born This Way collaborator Fernando Garibay calls the clip a 'thank you' to Gaga's label, Interscope.

Lady Gaga has said the 14-minute "Marry the Night" video is an avant-garde look at her early struggles before hitting it big, and frequent musical collaborator Fernando Garibay told MTV News he remembers seeing a lot of that strife that plays out in the clip.

"She directed the whole video. It was her concept from beginning to end," he said. "It was amazing to see. I was brought in to do the music for the video and additional scoring and such, and so I got to sit and watch the whole process. It's pretty spectacular. It's still breathtaking how much effort and input she has for concepts. ... I might be biased, but it's my favorite video so far. It looks great, and it captures the feeling of the song. It's her story."

So what exactly is that story? The video follows a fictionalized Gaga pursuing her dreams as a ballerina. After she's told to quit, she reinvents herself and becomes a pop sensation. It mirrors her real-life story of being dropped by Island/Def Jam before being signed to Interscope Records, and the rest is history.

"It wasn't easy — that's an understatement," Garibay said of Gaga's early days in the industry. "It wasn't easy for her to get started in the music business, and I was there early on when she was already taking extreme risks. And a lot of the stuff, it's tough to watch, 'cause I've seen that happen, some of those parts. And her honoring and paying homage to Interscope — 'cause it's great, 'cause it's our label and they were always believers in us, particularly her — so it's great to see that. It's like gratitude. It's like a 'thank you.' "

In the lead-up to the video, Garibay said his pop-star pal wasn't in any way scared to put so much of her life out there for public consumption.

"I don't think she's nervous at all," he said. "She's fearless. There's nothing to hide with her. She really put a lot of herself out there this time, but it's something we see all the time. It's nice for the public to see the story and what happened and the true expression of herself in video. It is very autobiographical. She's been wanting to tell the story, so she finally got the opportunity. So it'll be interesting to see what's gonna happen next with her vision."

30 Seconds To Mars Call Record-Setting Show A 'Thank You'

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 02:12 AM PST

Band will enter the Guinness Book of World Records with Wednesday's show, their 300th in support of This Is War.
By James Montgomery

Photo: MTV News

Like most things involving his band, Jared Leto's idea to gun for the Guinness Book of World Records was born out of one part determination, one part mania — and a whole lot of sleep deprivation.

"It was my idea. I'm the guilty party here," he laughed. "But people started to ask us, with an incredulous look, What the f--- is wrong with you? or they would kind of look at us and be like, 'You guys are still on tour?' And it started to seep in that maybe this was a little bit crazy. And then I remember as a kid, I was a big fan of the Guinness Book of World Records ... so I just started thinking, Maybe we should take a shot at it. "

So they did, and on Wednesday night (December 7), with a sold-out concert at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, 30 Seconds to Mars will officially set a Guinness World Record for most shows performed during a single album cycle. It's the 300th they've played in support of their This Is War album, and yes, though they're very tired, they're also quite honored to hold the record for the world's longest-running road dogs.

"I used to love the [Guinness] Book, you know, world's fattest twins or world's longest fingernails, and so it's fun to think we're a part of something that was a part of our childhood," Leto said. "Plus, it's Mars history, and something fun for us to do and another chance for us to stop, take note, say thank you to the people that have shared the journey and helped to take our dreams and make them reality."

Though the record-setting show is sold out, fans from around the world can still witness the band make history through VyRT.com, an interactive site that will stream the Hammerstein gig in all its glory. Once the show is completed, 30STM will play a pair of low-key benefit performances at New York's St. Peter's church, and then, finally, their schedules will be clear. And no, they're not quite sure what they'll do with all that free time.

"I think the most time we've had off over the past two years has been, maybe, two weeks, and we shot a video during that time," Leto laughed. "It's almost like taking away your wife or newborn baby and then saying, 'OK, go and live another life.' It's become such a deep, intrinsic part of our daily grind. ... It may not be as easy as we've all been assuming, but whatever it is ... it will be a step towards a really different future."

A future that includes more Mars music? Well, that remains to be seen. For this week, at least, 30 Seconds to Mars aren't thinking about what lies ahead; they're remembering everything that's led them to this point. After all, it's been quite a journey, to say the very least.

"It's a new beginning; that's always really strange, exciting, uncomfortable but important. We all know you close one door and another one can open, but I think the future of 30 Seconds to Mars, as undetermined as things may be right now, it's still very exciting," Leto said. "There are a lot of projects under that banner; music is one, and we're also really grateful, and this week is about sharing that with everyone as we say goodbye and thank everyone for the most amazing journey we've ever experienced in our lives. We'll always look back at this time as one of the most important and impactful periods of our creative lives, ever."

'Jersey Shore' Season Five 'One Of My Best,' Pauly D Says

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 08:08 AM PST

New season, which premieres January 5, finds the cast returning to the Shore and burying old beefs.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Pauly D
Photo: MTV

The last season of MTV's "Jersey Shore" was an Italian debacle on par with Silvio Berlusconi (look it up). It was 12 episodes of infighting, head-butting, vehicular mishaps, ill-fated hookup attempts and, of course, Sammi and Ronnie.

So when news broke that the gang would be returning to their spiritual home of Seaside Heights, New Jersey, for the upcoming fifth season, there was much rejoicing — especially from the stars themselves. As Pauly D recently told MTV News, they left all the drama back in Italy and focused instead on just having fun.

"There was a lot of tension in [Italy], because we were away from our friends, away from our family, so all we had was each other — that's it," Pauly said. "So now we literally ran to Jersey, because we missed it so much, and we just shared that bond, because we've been there before, so we enjoyed it with everybody this year. It was really one of my best years, I think." In the new season, Pauly said even the most ardent of foes — like, say, Snooki and the Situation, who traded barbs (among other things) during their Italian holiday — have buried the tension.

"They're better. It was tough for me to live in the house when they were doing that, because it was way out of left field, I wasn't expecting that," Pauly explained. "But what's crazy about it is that we'll fight, but we still come together at the end of the day, as a family almost. Kind of like a messed-up family."

Pauly also said that, despite previous reports, his best pal Vinny is still very much a part of the new season. While he has plenty of answers about the new "Shore" season, even Pauly was at a loss when it comes to the current relationship status of Sammi and Ronnie, the, uh, star-crossed couple whose constant bickering has become (for better or worse) a staple of the show.

"Man, I don't know. They change like the weather. Are they together, are they not? I don't even know," he laughed." I love them both. Together, it's crazy. I don't even need a relationship, because I'm living through theirs."

The fifth season of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. For continuing "Shore" coverage, be sure to check in with MTV's Remote Control blog.

Patricia Clarkson Talks Tammy One's Scary 'Parks And Rec' Arrival

Ron Swanson's cold-hearted ex-wife is #29 on MTV News' Top 50 TV characters.
By Jocelyn Vena

Before Patricia Clarkson's arrival on "Parks and Recreation," fans could only imagine what Ron Swanson's chilling, manipulative ex-wife was like. The mere thought of Tammy One returning sends Ron running for cover. But over a two-episode arc, Clarkson perfectly embodied the role of Tammy One, giving a cold-hearted face to the show's most-feared character.

Tammy One's arrival in Pawnee, Indiana, was bone-chilling and left fans crossing their fingers that Swanson would get out alive. That memorable introduction also helped her to place a solid #29 on MTV News' list of Top 2011 TV Characters.

We got on the phone with Clarkson on Tuesday, and she opened up about getting the chance to play the scariest woman in the "Parks and Rec" universe.

MTV: What was your reaction when you first read this character? She's the only person that seems to really get under Ron Swanson's skin. It takes a lot to get under his skin.

Jimmy Fallon, one Pretty Little Liar and more also make our TV Top 50!

Patricia Clarkson: Oh, yes it does! Well when I first read it I thought, "Oh my." You know I'm friends with Nick [Offerman] and Megan [Mullally] and they came to me urging me. And I thought, "Why do you think I'm this [character]? ... First of all, let's deal with that."

You know, I'm quite goofy, but I like doing characters that are a little bit of a stretch for me, and I do have a frightening aspect, and I think we all do as people. I think we can all summon the devils and the demons when we want. I am so thrilled I did this.

MTV: We had heard a lot about Ron Swanson's various Tammys, and you sort of embodied everything "Parks and Rec" fans had wanted to see for so long.

Clarkson: The lore that this character carries, the backstory — that was also intimidating, very intimidating to walk into that situation. That also was what made me hesitant, but then I said, "What the hell?" It was beautifully written and funny and perfectly etched. And I do really believe that this is one of the greatest shows ever. I do think it's an indelible cast of characters. It's just a superb show.

MTV: Are we going to see, maybe, the Tammys teaming up at all?

Clarkson: We're in the dark. Will Megan and I square off? ... Will we all come back and have a weenie roast? I don't know. First of all, the ceiling would have to be quite high, literally and figuratively.

MTV: Have you heard if you'll be back at all?

Clarkson: I don't know. I think they want the element of surprise, whether she does or doesn't. It's up to the writers and what they have in store for this season. We'll see; it would be a blast.

MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV's Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage.

'Three Stooges' Trailer Delivers Slapstick And Snooki

Farrelly brothers bring the Stooges into present day but leave their classic comedy style intact.

The Farrelly brothers have finally unleashed the first trailer for their "Three Stooges" movie, and if you're a fan of Larry, Moe and Curly's classic slapstick, consider it an early Christmas gift.

The nearly two-minute spot opens at the Sisters of Mercy Orphanage, where a burlap sack containing the baby Stooges is dropped at the doorstep, complete with the first eye-poke gag.

The rest of the trailer features a smorgasbord of classic "Three Stooges" quotes, gags and slapstick, with a couple of modern twists thrown in. There's the familiar "spread out!" shout when the boys prep for a fight, Curly's panting and dog barks when he spots a beautiful woman (one of whom is played by "Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara) and their "Mind your P's and Q's" gag. There are lobsters stuck to faces and dropped in pants, plus countless objects thrown at our main characters.

In one scene, the guys are introduced to the iPhone, which Curly puts up to his eye to try and blink-talk with someone.

The final shot of the trailer features some very familiar faces: JWoww and Snooki from our very own "Jersey Shore."

"Hiya, Snook, I gotcha a present," Larry says, holding out a cardboard box to an unsuspecting Snooki. "Go on, open it." Snooki opens the top and a hand jumps out and pokes her in the eye. "Owww!" she yells, and the trailer fades to black.

After years of false starts and attempts to reboot the classic eye-poking, head-bonking comedy franchise with stars such as Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Jim Carrey, the movie now is being headlined by the trio of Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamontopoulos.

Although the film is not yet rated, when MTV News caught up with the Farrellys earlier this year, they promised to keep things PG.

"The Stooges, by the way, are just naturally and organically PG," Peter Farrelly said. "That's what it is. We wouldn't want it to be what it isn't. It's like 'Napoleon Dynamite,' as funny as that was, that was a PG movie, not PG-13. It's just natural, and this is what the Stooges is.

"They are Moe, Larry, Curly as you remember them," he added when asked if the co-directors had plans to modernize the characters at all. "It's not a biopic. It's the episodes just as you saw but we rewrote, we have all new episodes. We have three episodes. Technically, each episode picks up where the last one left off. Each one begins with its own theme, so it's about an hour and 25 minutes. Three episodes, fun, old-fashioned, but it takes place present-day, and they look, dress and sound like the Three Stooges."

Paramore had what could charitably be described as an interesting 2011, recovering from the departure of founding members Josh and Zac Farro, rediscovering the joy of playing music in the midst of a South American tour, and reconnecting with fans through the debut of their song-a-month "Singles Club."

In short, it's been the kind of year that would break lesser bands, and yet, Paramore persist, with a reinvigorated sense of purpose and plans for a new album in 2012. And they make no bones about the fact that both of those things are due in no small part to the fervent support of their fanbase. Theirs is a bond that goes beyond mere fandom; they are, as frontwoman Hayley Williams told MTV News earlier this year, "family."

So it is somewhat fitting that, in a year where so much was focused on the inner workings of the band, we bring 2011 to a close by showcasing Paramore playing what amounted to one huge family gathering: their headlining performance at September's Fueled by Ramen 15th anniversary show, a rousing run-through of their biggest hits (and a couple new tunes) in front of a sold-out, spirited crowd. It was cathartic, it was energetic, and yes, it was plenty sweaty. In a year when MTV featured plenty of performances, it remains one of the highlights.

So it's equally fitting that Paramore's "Brick by Boring Brick" is in the running for the Best MTV Live Performance of 2011, up against the likes of Adele's chill-inducing VMA moment and Beyoncé's bump-revealing set at the same show. It captures the band connecting with their fans as only they can, with Williams largely abandoning her duties and letting the crowd sing every last note. And they did so with aplomb. In a field of flashy, big-budget performances, it's among the most thrilling (and honest) you're likely to see.

So check out Paramore's performance, and remember, the winner of the Best MTV Live Performance award will be revealed Monday at noon ET. If you're a member of the Paramore family, we know you'll be voting early and often.

MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV's Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage.
