Britney Spears' Femme Fatale: My Favorite 2011 Album

Spears reinforced her bad-girl persona with an ode to nightclubs and hot boys.

To say that 2011 was an outstanding year for pop is a bit of an understatement. Rihanna wanted her fans to Talk That Talk, Lady Gaga was Born This Way, Demi Lovato declared herself Unbroken, and Beyoncé and Adele pledged their allegiance to the numbers 4 and 21.

But no album was as booty-shakingly fun as Britney Spears' Femme Fatale. The first time I heard the album, I was hooked. It reminded me why I fell in love with Britney and her music over a decade ago.

Quite possibly the best work of her career, Femme Fatale — which dropped in March — is a cohesive, sonically unwavering piece of dance pop. It makes no grandiose political statements, except Spears' pro stance on hot guys and dance clubs, and it certainly makes no apologies for just being a really, really good time.

It's thumping, sassy, loud and sexy. It's Britney Spears doing what she does best: cooing about dancing and boys over club beats and synths. She rounded up the best of the best on the production end of things (Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly and will.i.am, to name a few) and proved she still has what it takes to kill it from beginning to end. It's heavy on club anthems full of mind-bending beats and samples that add flair but never make it too busy.

At times, it's even self-referential. On "Inside Out," Spears drops lyrics from some of her biggest hits like " ... Baby One More Time" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy." There aren't many relevant artists with a catalogue deep enough or beloved enough to pull that off.

On "I Wanna Go," Spears reminds us that even though everyone is waiting for her to burst, she still wants to cut loose every once in a while. She's one of those people who can poke fun at her public image and be completely endearing while doing it.

You never count out a femme fatale; they're mysterious and wily, foxy and sexy. And 2011 confirmed the lesson pop culture can't seem to learn: You never count out Britney Spears. She is pop's ultimate femme fatale. Now go dance your butt off — it's what Britney would want.

'Vampire Diaries' Star Bites Into Top 2011 TV Characters

'Doctor Who' and 'Community' stars also make MTV News' top 50.
By MTV News staff

What do Mandy Patinkin, Anthony Bourdain and Aaron Paul all have in common? They're all on MTV News' list of the Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, for one thing — and for very different reasons too!

Whether it's Patinkin busting terrorists as the Jewish Jack Bauer on "Homeland," Bourdain traveling the globe for his two Travel Channel shows or Paul up to no good again on "Breaking Bad," each one of these actors — and more, mind you — are easily among the best television characters of the year.

See who else ranked up there with Mandy, Tony and Aaron as our countdown of 2011's Top 50 TV Characters continues!

30. Adam Demamp ("Workaholics")
"Workaholics" is the best new show on television, and Adam is the best character. I can't actually verbalize why he's so amazing, so here's a list of memories: 1. When he entered a bodybuilding contest; 2. When he couldn't party at Hedonism II because his penis fell off; 3. When he explained that Fred Durst is "a dry guy." Honestly, you kind of had to be there. But rest assured, it's worth going! -Rya Backer

29. Tammy One ("Parks and Recreation")
As you read this, Tammy 1 might be out there in the world plotting some terrible ways to make Ron Swanson's life a living nightmare. Cold, calculated and a complete sociopath, Patricia Clarkson's interpretation of the most feared person to ever walk through Pawnee, Indiana, is nothing less than brilliant. Plus, any woman who can convince Ron that voluntarily shaving off his signature mustache is good for him gets a free pass to be on this list. -Jocelyn Vena

28. Saul Berenson ("Homeland")
To the young patriots out there who are thinking about a career with the CIA, please first consider the life of Saul Berenson, Mandy Patinkin's character on "Homeland." It's a life filled with high-pressure days and lonely nights that often include eating in a dark, empty office, spreading peanut butter with a ruler found in a desk drawer. Yet even while carrying the weight — and fate — of the world on his shoulders, Berenson manages to do it with a wicked sense of humor. And mellow, even-keeled Berenson is a great foil for his moody, impulsive protégé Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes). Patinkin has had larger roles on shows like "Criminal Minds" and "Chicago Hope," but we prefer him in smaller doses; we sincerely hope Berenson doesn't end up taking a bullet for his country. -Tami Katzoff

See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 50 to 41, including a masked bachelor and dashing novelist/crime-fighter.

27. Klaus ("The Vampire Diaries")
The vilest of all vampires, Klaus had been nothing more than a whispered foe until he made his big, bad debut on the CW's "Vampire Diaries" earlier this year. The hybrid (he's half bloodsucker and half wolf) is nearly impossible to kill, and we've got to believe he's used his nefarious powers of compulsion on us, because we certainly didn't expect to find him so ... appealing. Klaus (played by Joseph Morgan) is the quintessential emotionally battered bad boy (daddy issues!) who girls can't help but find utterly irresistible. It doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes (if not the carotid) either. -Amy Wilkinson

26. River Song ("Doctor Who")
With a breezy "Hello Sweetie," River Song strode her way into the Doctor's life, and fans' hearts. When she first appeared, "Doctor Who" fans didn't know what to make of the enigmatic archeologist. Equally intriguing and infuriating, River Song (played by the fabulous Alex Kingston) knows more about the Doctor than anyone, including his real name, but refuses to explain, saying only "Spoilers!" Even after fans finally learned who she is this season, we are still left with more questions than answers. River's flirty banter and aggressive nature make her a perfect foil to the witty-but-reserved Doctor. She pushes when he pulls and shoots when he runs. We may never know everything about River Song, but that's just the way we like it. -Christina Beale

25. Abed ("Community")
Abed may be a complete oddball, but we love him all the more for it, and now he needs our love more than ever. With "Community" on the bench at NBC, fans have shown their support with the "Save Greendale" campaign. And as long as we get more of Abed riffing on Christian Bale's Batman voice, you can count on our support. -Kevin P. Sullivan

24. Anthony Bourdain ("No Reservations," "The Layover")
The ultimate travel companion, Bourdain knows food and has the attitude to hold his own in any foreign city. We get to live vicariously through Bourdain as he travels the globe, trying new foods and generally living a cooler life than any of his viewers could ever hope to live. The reason we still love him is because he does it with style. -Kevin P. Sullivan

See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 40 to 31, including a "hootie hoo!"-hollering chef and funnyman talk-show host.

23. Wayne Unser ("Sons of Anarchy")
If it was up to me, every single member of SAMCRO would be on this list. We'll let good old Wayne Unser, played exceptionally by "Deadwood" vet Dayton Callie, represent the "Sons" instead. Retired from his post as Charming's chief of police, hopelessly in love with a woman he can't have and staring death in the face every single day, the cancer-stricken Unser is a ticking time bomb determined to right his wrongdoing past before the clock runs out. As Clay so wisely put it, there's nothing more dangerous than a guy who already knows he's dead. That's Unser to the letter — and that's why we can't get enough of him. -Josh Wigler

22. Coach Taylor ("Friday Night Lights")
I dare you right now, if you haven't already, to go watch the entire series of "Friday Night Lights" and not fall in love with Coach Eric Taylor. You can't. He is the perfect husband, father and coach. This year, we said goodbye to the coach, but he will live on forever because "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose." Dammit, now I'm crying again! -Kevin P. Sullivan

21. Jesse Pinkman ("Breaking Bad")
Aaron Paul's Jesse Pinkman can't win, and it's heartbreaking to watch. Seemingly destined always to be the pawn and to fall short of his heroic aspirations, this meth cook-turned-reluctant assassin basically didn't talk for the first half of the season, just floated around all dead inside, then spent the second half embracing newfound compassion and conviction. That moral renewal was all the more tragic because you just knew this unlucky kid would still end up getting pwned by season's end. Yet we root for him nonetheless. We need Jesse to become a hero. -Eric Ditzian

David Guetta, Others Laud Skrillex For Grammy Noms

Porter Robinson, Sofi and Tommy Lee congratulate Skrillex on his five Grammy nominations.

Last week, it was announced that Sonny Moore, the rocker-turned-DJ/producer that has exploded onto the electronic music scene as Skrillex, has been nominated for five Grammy Awards. Included among the noms is Best New Artist, a first in Grammy history for a "DJ."

And while Skrill's Grammy salutes may have come as a shock to him when he heard the news while in Manchester, U.K., his EDM cohorts say the recognition makes perfect sense.

"I am just so happy for Skrillex, man!" his 19-year-old friend and former OWSLA tourmate, Porter Robinson said. "He definitely deserves it. I've been saying it all year, he's the most influential musician of this year, in any genre. Incredible sound designer. Incredible songwriter. Amazing performer."

EDM artist, friend and collaborator Sofi said, "He's been in bands before. He's an excellent songwriter. He can sing. He's just so versatile that I think that comes through in his music. He kind of brought this 'rock,' 'raw' element into electronic music. He's the punk rock of the new generation."

In 2011, Skrillex has whipped up hearty remixes (his remix of Benny Benassi and Gary Go's "Cinema" remains a fan favorite), released his EP More Monsters and Sprites, supplied songs for video games, launched his OWSLA record label, played massive festivals, jumped on Kaskade's new album and produced songs for Korn's new album — just to name a sliver of his endeavors.

Regardless of how Skrillex is categorized as an artist (he's often called a "dubstep" artist — a moniker he doesn't agree with), fans, critics and artists alike, from niche to pop, all seem to be onboard the Skrillex train.

"He's extremely talented, and I'm very happy for him," beamed dance music's most popular veteran, David Guetta. "It's a statement: I think it's really good that an artist from our community is nominated just as 'an artist.' Not as a 'dance' artist, you know? I think that it's good that [our] music is now getting the attention and the respect that all the other styles of music, like hip-hop, are getting."

To mark the Grammy recognition, Sonny's friends asked us to share their congratulations with him.

"Skrilly, congratulations, dude!" shouted Tommy Lee. "That's so rad, man. I'm sitting here thinking a year ago we were sitting in my studio and you were playing me your new sh--, and Blam! Grammy nods like a muthaf----! Congratulations, dude! Kill that sh--, brotha!"

"Sonny, man, I just want to congratulate you on the Grammys!" echoed Porter Robinson. "It's been an absolutely insane year. The tour that we did together, the OWSLA tour, was without question the best time of my life. You deserve this like nobody else, so congratulations!"

"Skrilly, congratulations on your many nominations!" Sofi exclaimed. "I'm just really thrilled for you buddy. You're awesomely talented and you know I've been a fan of yours since day one. I remember when you showed me your EP that came out on mau5trap (deadmau5' label) and I told you that you were going to get REAL busy! And guess what — I can't even get a hold of you anymore!" she laughed. "Good for you, buddy! Go get 'em!"

'Jersey Shore' Season Five Trailer: Home Sweet Home

Castmates return to New Jersey after Italian vacation for the new season, which premieres January 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

After spending some fish-out-of-water time across the pond in Italy, the "Jersey Shore" gang is heading back to their Seaside Heights stomping ground for the fifth installment of the MTV series, premiering Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. And after a quick glimpse at the just-released trailer, it appears as if the GTL crew is ready for tons of partying, booze and, of course, drama.

"Shore" is expected to pick things up where the season-four installment ended, as the eight housemates bid farewell to Florence, Italy, and prepare for their New Jersey return. In the two-minute teaser, the fist-pumping crew toasts to yet another crazy summer and is later greeted to what looks like a surprise welcome-home party. "We're back in our habitat and I'm ready to tear the speakers off this joint," Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino yells. Despite Snooki and Deena's meatball escapades, the usual club dance battles and pranks galore, it isn't all fun times for the gang — especially when Vinny decides to depart the Seaside Heights house.

"This is real. This is a reality right here. Vinny's out of here," Pauly D says during a confessional after his castmate's departure.

As teased during the previous season, the battle between Snooki and the Situation shows no signs of slowing down. With his badgering comments about the pint-size guidette's boyfriend, the Situation doesn't appear apologetic about playing the part of an instigator, saying, "I do have that secret and I'm blowing it wide open." While one scene depicts the two castmates in the middle of a food fight, another scene shows the Snookster swatting a plastic baseball bat at the womanizer.

MTV News caught up with Deena earlier this year, who spoke about her time back in the States. "All of us became so close," she said of their European vacation. "So here, it really was like we were brothers and sisters. You get annoyed with each other, then you're fine. But you'll see, we had a lot of fun in Jersey; we had so much fun. We were home, we were comfortable."

The fifth season of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. For continuing "Shore" coverage, be sure to check in with MTV's Remote Control blog.

50 Cent Calls Pauly D's Upcoming Album 'Exciting'

'We're gonna make a hit record,' rapper says of 'Jersey Shore' star's 2012 project.

As early as April of this year, rumblings on the Web hinted that 50 Cent might sign "Jersey Shore" star and former Britney Spears tourmate Pauly D to his label, G-Note Records. But the deal wasn't confirmed until this week when both Fif and his new signee spread the word on Twitter.

During the launch party for his SMS Audio headphones line in NYC on Monday night, 50 Cent gave MTV News a few details on Pauly D's upcoming album, due out in 2012.

"Pauly's project is not all his performance on the actual records," Fif explained. "It's more like what you would get from a DJ Khaled or DJ Drama but also what you would get from David Guetta — so it's a cross between those two worlds, and I think it's exciting."

A cross between two of the most notorious hip-hop DJs and one of the most popular electronic DJs certainly sounds like a winning combination for Pauly D, who has already built a solid fanbase in reality TV. And with plans for Pauly to star in his own MTV show in the coming months, 50 is even more confident that the hair-gel fanatic is primed to blow up.

"He obviously has a huge platform moving forward. His show is a spin-off from 'Jersey Shore,' " 50 said. "And being in front of large audiences every night DJing — we're gonna make a hit record out of the actual material that we have around and some of the new stuff that we'll put together."

Maybe fans will get a chance to see 50 Cent and Pauly D working together on the album when the Rhode Island native finally debuts his own reality show. Earlier this year, Pauly D gave MTV News an idea of what fans might expect from the story line.

"It'll be probably along the lines of, I used to be this DJ in Rhode Island, DJing two sets a week, hustling, promoting," he explained. "And all of a sudden, I'm on this show, and now they're sending private jets for me to DJ for these huge crowds, yet I'm still the same guy that was DJing for 200 people, just loving life."

The show hasn't received an airdate just yet, but by the time it does, DJ Pauly D may well be an international superstar.

'Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn': Year In Review

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 03:07 AM PST

We look back on an action-packed 2011 with Rob, Kristen, Taylor and more, in Twilight Tuesday.
By Kara Warner

This week's Twilight Tuesday is dedicated to the 10 best "Twilight" moments of 2011. Selecting the list proved to be a daunting task, considering an action-packed year full of "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" news, interviews, photos, videos and more. Among the biggest highlights were saucy honeymoon photos, much ado about a sex scene, the birth of a vampire/human hybrid baby and the return of the fan-created "tent city" in support of the L.A. premiere of "Part 1."

10. "Breaking Dawn" Soundtrack Revealed
The vampire franchise has not only made its stars super famous, but an artist who lands on any of the films' best-selling soundtracks can expect a special boost and instant exposure to a massive fanbase. Emerging acts like Sleeping At Last and Christina Perri, as well as rising stars like Bruno Mars have earned featured spots on the compilations. But "Twilight" stars have also contributed material, with Mia Maestro's "Carmen" making the cut.

9. The "Twilight" World Tour
There's nothing like the glitz of a red-carpet premiere to bring out the best in everyone, particularly with regard to wardrobe choices. When the "Breaking Dawn" cast embarked upon a whirlwind tour of world premieres, Twilighters couldn't wait to see who wore what. MTV News captured the glamorous looks in a handy photo gallery for repeated viewing pleasure.

8. "Breaking Dawn" Goes To Comic-Con
Those who've been following the franchise from the beginning will probably remember that it was at in 2008 San Diego Comic-Con that thousands of screaming fans descended upon the annual pop-culture convention and surprised convention-goers with their overwhelming enthusiasm. That first showing was such a huge success that going forward, Summit made Comic-Con a major priority with regard to promoting the films. At this summer's event MTV News got several particularly newsy tidbits about Renesmee and Jacob's imprinting, but we also really loved hearing Kristen Stewart talk about Bella's wedding.

7. Our Extended "Breaking Dawn" Interview
We've had the pleasure of catching up with the castmembers several times this year, so it was hard to narrow down all of those great interviews into just one favorite. That said, we loved hearing Robert Pattinson talk about Stewart playing a vampire in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2." And he really loved that she had to suffer through those uncomfortable contact lenses for the transition. "When she finally wore them and then was complaining about them every second of the day, it was kind of satisfying," he smiled.

6. The First Photo
Any piece of "Twilight" news is arguably cause for a few screams of delight for Twilighters. But when Summit released the first steamy, swoon-worthy photo of newlyweds Edward and Bella in bed together, we could practically hear the collective squeals and sighs from fans around the world. Talk about starting the New Year off with a bang.

5. The Trailer
This one really needs no introduction or explanation, but if there were squeals when the first photo was released, there may well have been mind-explosions and full-on fainting when we premiered the first full-length "Breaking Dawn" trailer during the '11 MTV Movie Awards. The clip offered glimpses of the wedding, a shirtless Jacob Black, the Cullens, the wolf pack, a very unexpected and dangerous pregnancy ... everything a Twilighter hoped for.

4. Fan-Made Reactions To The Trailer
When we asked "Twilight" fans to send in their reactions to the trailer, we couldn't have anticipated all of the crying. Fans shed tears of joy, of course, and with those emotional outpourings clinched prominent placement on our list.

3. "MTV First: Breaking Dawn," The Highlight Reel
As we've already mentioned, we were lucky to spend time with the cast this year. One of the best interviews we conducted was as part of our "MTV First" series. Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner introduced an exclusive clip and let loose in a lively Q&A. We even put together a highlight reel from the extra-special event that includes making Stewart uncomfortable and Pattinson complaining about Lautner's well-defined abs.

2. The L.A. Premiere
Excitement over the star-studded Los Angeles premiere of "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" was so intense it seemed to rival major Hollywood events like the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards. Celebrity super fans begged to attend and came out in droves to the premiere, many with their children and teenagers in tow. The fans' cheering was nonstop as the stars arrived on the black carpet, but it reached fever pitch with the arrival of Pattinson. Naturally, our quick chat with the heartthrob about all those sex scenes and their potential to give the film an R-rating made our Twilight Tuesday "best of" list.

1. Fans Unite In "Tent City"
Make no mistake, we have high regard for Pattinson, Stewart, Lautner, director Bill Condon and everyone who worked on "Breaking Dawn," but when it comes to the franchise's key components, the fans are the real secret to its success. When we visited the dedicated, die-hard bunch that descended upon downtown Los Angeles to camp out, we were delighted by their enthusiasm. Gathered in appropriately named "tent city," they amassed several days before the premiere in a show of ultimate fandom.

So here's to you, "Twilight" fans, and see you again next year for "Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1."

'X Factor' Judge Simon Cowell 'Pretty Cool' To Astro

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 03:27 AM PST

'Simon knows what he's talking about,' former contestant tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

In a rare moment of self-examination, the typically unwavering Simon Cowell admitted he was wrong.

When hip-hop whiz kid Astro refused to perform for his life after being placed in the bottom two during the November 17 episode of "X Factor," Cowell tore into the 15-year-old MC. But Astro, who was eventually eliminated from the competition weeks later, isn't holding any grudges. Actually, he thinks Simon — who later admitted he felt "a bit" bad for Astro — is a pretty cool guy overall.

"Simon knows what he's talking about. Everybody has different opinions, so I'm not always 100 percent agreeing with Simon, but it is what it is," he told MTV News on Monday before giving the reality-show judge his props. "I don't think he's a jerk like they portray him on TV; he's actually pretty cool."

Throughout his run on "X Factor," the Brooklyn rapper was criticized for his confident and at-times cocky attitude. Still, he isn't too concerned with what others think. "Everybody has different opinions," he said. "You can't really control what this person thinks of your performance or what that person thinks."

A clear standout in the competition, Astro did hit bumps in the road. During the November 17 elimination show, after Cowell came down on the Astronomical Kid, things got tense. "I gotta say, on the night, I was really annoyed, and not for anything else other than for him," Cowell told MTV News. "And then I watched it back that night, and then I felt sorry for him."

Astro did live to see another day but was eventually eliminated on the November 30 show. Now, the teenage MC is looking forward to completing his mixtape and hopefully signing a deal eventually.

"I just want to be in a place where I'm comfortable 100 percent. I just want to be able to release my music, do my movies [and] everything is fair," he said of his dream deal. "I just want to be able to have fun doing it. I don't want music to be a job for me; I want it to be something I'm doing for fun. As long it's not a job, then you're straight."

'Thor 2' Loses Director Patty Jenkins

According to Deadline New York, the 'Monster' director left due to creative differences.

Patty Jenkins' journey to Asgard has been cut short.

According to Deadline New York, the "Monster" director has left the production of "Thor 2." The site reports that Marvel Studios is already in communication with agencies in its search for a new director. Given the sequel's July 26, 2013, release date, a replacement is expected to be found quickly.

Although Jenkins allegedly left due to creative differences, Deadline also reported that she is still in good standing with Marvel and might end up working on another of the studio's numerous superhero films in development.

Jenkins is now the second director to leave "Thor 2," following director Kenneth Branagh's announcement earlier this year that he wouldn't be returning to the franchise. Branagh said his experience with "Thor" was a "joy" and that his decision was due to timing, not any ill will toward the franchise or the studio.

"Of all the American comics, 'Thor' was the only one I was really familiar with from my childhood, and it intrigued me, maybe because it was a bit more European, with those Viking helmets and its basis in Norse myth," Branagh told Variety. "The scale was exciting, and I did love the character and the story. It had depth and gravity in addition to being an entertaining ride.

"I certainly wouldn't rule out a return to Marvel," he added. "We had an excellent collaboration."

Check out everything we've got on "Thor 2."

By Rob Markman

Wiz Khalifa has always been a fan of Three 6 Mafia, and what's not to love? With a rowdy rap catalog that includes the hits "Tear da Club Up," "Sippin' on Some Syrup" and "Stay Fly," Three 6 has grown to become one of hip-hop's most iconic groups. And the Pittsburgh hitmaker will be working with the Mafia's Juicy J closely now that he has signed him to his Taylor Gang label.

"Yeah that's official, that's good to go," Khalifa confirmed with MTV News on Wednesday night before he took the stage with Snoop Dogg at Terminal 5 in New York.

Juice, who just released his latest mixtape, Blue Dream & Lean, on November 29, revealed the signing during an interview with Hood Rich Radio. "Juicy J is now with Taylor Gang, we goin' in this year, man. 2012, we goin' in," he said.

Longtime Taylor Gang artist Chevy Woods is looking forward to adding the rapper/producer to the crew. "It's fun for me, because I really just sit back and watch," he told MTV News. "[Wiz is] always doin' somethin' different."

For Wiz, this is an opportunity to link up with an artist that he has looked up to for a long time. "Well, I've always been a huge fan of Juicy J and Three 6 Mafia and what they brought to the game," he said. "As far as their music, as far as their consistency, as far as just if you're in that mood and you know what you wanna hear, they brought it and I respected that. And they brought it for years, since I was young."

"I remember when 'Tear da Club Up' first came out and I remember when 'Stay Fly' came out, and those are two huge songs from the same group of people who never fell off or lost it at all. And I really look up to that and respect that."

Turns out, according to Khalifa, Juice was a fan of Wiz as well. "It was like, 'Man we might as well bridge the gap and takeover,' because he's gonna be here forever and I'm gonna be here forever."

What do you think of Juicy J joining Taylor Gang? Tells us in the comments!

Usher's Next Album 'Soulful, Catchy,' Taio Cruz Teases

'He always wants there to be the soul in there,' Cruz tells MTV News about his 'Without You' collaborator.

Usher is hard at work on his next album. Set to work with fellow hitmaker Taio Cruz, the two already cooked up some magic with their David Guetta anthem "Without You," and it seems they are hoping to recapture that spirit for Usher's follow-up to 2010's Raymond v. Raymond.

"I saw Usher a few times, but I spoke to him at length at David [Guetta]'s house when we were in Ibiza [Spain]," he told MTV News in L.A. after his Jingle Ball set. "He has very specific ideas of where he wants to go musically and sound-wise."

Given that Usher has never shied away from exposing a bit of himself in his music, while also keeping the party going, Cruz wants to make sure they can connect the mind, body and soul for this next release. "He always wants there to be the soul in there," he explained. "I'm kind of, not the opposite, but I'm always like, 'Let's get straight to the point and be really clear with the message and be simple.'

"So we try to match those two worlds together: being soulful and, at the same time, catchy," he added.

Cruz can't yet discuss what they're working on: Besides "Without You," he said, "Everything else is secret."

Usher said he was drawn to the Guetta hit because he connected to it emotionally, explaining to MTV News recently what an important part that plays in his musical philosophy. "I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," he said. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. There is no denying that hip-hop veterans like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross have all had a remarkable 2011, but the past 12 months also saw the meteoric rise of some of the game's most exciting young MCs as well.

Since the top of the year, artists like Mac Miller and Meek Mill have established themselves as bona fide stars. On Wednesday at 4 p.m. on MTV.com, "RapFix Live" will explore the budding careers of some very notable rap rooks, as Machine Gun Kelly, Roscoe Dash and Kendrick Lamar check in to discuss their big year. During the show, MTV News will also reveal the list of 2011's Hottest Breakthrough MCs.

Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established in 2010 by MTV News as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done and the votes were tallied, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang general beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole.

"It's a great thing to be recognized on that level, and really just by my fans," Wiz told MTV News after his win. "That award right there, I feel it was real special to me, because I feel like my whole career has just been based off my fans. My fans just really came through and they just pushed me over."

The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during December 14's "RapFix Live," along with a special announcement about the next Hottest MCs in the Game.

To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010's Hottest Breakthrough MC poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won't be part of this conversation.

The fan-voted winner of Hottest Breakthrough MCs will be considered in the upcoming 2011 Hottest MCs in the Game list as well. Who will be crowned Hottest Breakthrough? It's all up to you, so tune into "RapFix Live" for the full list of rookie MCs.

Catch Machine Gun Kelly, Kendrick Lamar and Roscoe Dash on "RapFix Live" Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive!

Angelina Jolie Says Teens Will Identify With 'Blood And Honey'

'I think they will watch this film and say, 'That could be me' and 'What would I do?' ' director/writer tells MTV News.

Angelina Jolie lives her life in front of cameras. Even when she's off the job and not starring in action films like "Salt" or "Wanted," paparazzi follow her every move. But in the last three years, Jolie has only appeared onscreen in two films, representing a dialing back on her profile as an actress.

Now Jolie has returned in a big but unexpected way. Her feature-film directorial debut, "In the Land of Blood and Honey," follows the relationship of a man and a woman during the Bosnian War, and Jolie is nowhere to be found in front of the camera. Her work remains entirely behind the camera as the film's writer and director, leaving the acting to people native to the countries portrayed in the film.

At the New York premiere of her film, Jolie spoke with MTV News about why the movie is especially important for a younger audience, who may not have even been alive or remember the Bosnian War of the early 1990s.

"This young audience will be interested because [of] the characters — they'll identify with them," Jolie said. "This is the '90s. They may have been children or not alive during that time, but they're watching people who were 18 years old, 10 years old in a European cosmopolitan society, and it's what would have happened if they went to war."

It's this identification that Jolie believes will ultimately draw younger viewers to the film and will make them question how the same conflict would affect their own lives. "I think they will watch this film and say, 'That could be me' and 'What would I do?' and 'How would I handle this situation?' " she said. "So I think it will become very personal to them, and I think they will identify with it. And it's war in our generation, so we must pay attention."

Robert Pattinson 'Impressed' Paul Giamatti In 'Cosmopolis'

'He's a good judge of other actors,' director David Cronenberg tells MTV News of RPattz co-star's glowing review.

Last month, when MTV News asked David Cronenberg about working with Robert Pattinson on his upcoming film "Cosmopolis," the director put his feelings about the "Twilight" heartthrob simply: "He's sensational."

Cronenberg said that "Twilight" fans would see Pattinson in a way they aren't used to, since the role shares more in common with the actor's lesser-known films like "Little Ashes" and "Remember Me."

When the director walked the red carpet last week at the Gotham Independent Film Awards in support of his film "A Dangerous Method," he stopped to speak again with MTV News' Josh Horowitz, revealing which scenes in particular were the most challenging for Pattinson.

"Probably the last couple of days was where there was just a long, long, maybe 15-minute scene with Paul Giamatti, just the two of them in a couple of rooms," Cronenberg said. In "Cosmopolis," Pattinson plays Eric Packer, a young millionaire who just wants to get his hair cut. Things go awry when his limo gets stuck in traffic and a stalker, played by Giamatti, causes even more trouble.

Cronenberg said that one of the biggest testaments to Pattinson's skill as an actor was the effect he had on his Academy Award-nominated co-star. "They were both brilliant, and Paul was really impressed," he said. "If Paul's impressed, he's a good judge of other actors, and he said so publicly."

The director is simultaneously promoting "A Dangerous Method" and putting the finishing touches on "Cosmopolis." Cronenberg said that juggling both has never been an issue: "I've edited 'Cosmopolis,' and I'm about to go to Paris next week to do the sound mix of it, but I can switch over. It's like having two kids. When one kid comes through the door, you're there for that kid."

Wiz Khalifa And Snoop Dogg's 'Mac & Devin' Jams NY

Monday's New York concert promotes 'Mac & Devin Go to High School' soundtrack, due December 13.

Never mind that there's almost a 20-year age difference between Wiz Khalifa and his big homey Snoop Dogg: On Monday night, the smoked-out duo stood on equal ground for the first time, as co-headliners at New York City's Terminal 5.

The Cali rap vet and MTV News' Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010 were in the Big Apple to promote the soundtrack, set for release December 13, to their upcoming film, "Mac & Devin Go to High School."

After openers Chevy Woods and YG warmed up the crowd, Snoop walked out to his 2009 single "I Wanna Rock." Dressed in all black, with black shades and two braids in his hair, Tha Doggfather shuffled across the stage flanked by three curvaceous female dancers, who started out in Adidas tracksuits but had stripped down to skimpy lingerie by the time Snoop performed Akon's uncensored "I Wanna F--- You," three-quarters of the way through his set.

Snoop's half-hour solo portion of the show was filled with classics like Dr. Dre's "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" and "Next Episode" as well as his own "Bitch Please" and "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)"

Wiz emerged later to perform his newer rap favorites. Starting with "Cabin Fever," Khalifa bounced across the stage chanting, "If you see her, point her out," acknowledging all the "bad bitches" in the crowd. Most of Wiz's performance was centered around mixtape material. The Taylors gave overwhelming approval and applause as Cap ran through "Gang Bang" and Kush & Orange Juice faves "Never Been" and "In the Cut."

A brief intermission followed, during which scenes from "Mac & Devin Go to High School" played on the venue's big screen. Snoop and Wiz then returned, this time together, performing in tandem and passing joints to and fro. First up was "That Good," the initial collaborative "Mac & Devin" leak, on which Snoop dubs the stoner duo "the new Cheech and Chong." From there, the Dogg launched into his classic "Gin & Juice" while Khalifa served up some ad-libs.

Wiz encouraged his young Taylors to show the elder Snoop love, while the Dogg asked the crowd to congratulate the Pittsburgh breakout on his recent Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance, and the audience happily obliged both requests.

Though the two rocked solo songs like "Drop It Like It's Hot" and "On My Level," by the time Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa reached the show-closing "Young, Wild & Free," their onstage chemistry was undeniable. Though there are a number of years between the two MCs, the duo proved that when it comes to rocking crowds, age ain't nothing but a number.

Lady Gaga is perhaps the busiest monster of them all. Just six months after dropping her chart-topping Born This Way, the Mother Monster is already hard at work on its follow-up.

"I've started writing it and I have the name for it and all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place," she told MTV News at Jingle Ball in Los Angeles, where she also talked about her Grammy nods and "Marry the Night" video. "I'm excited to put it out, but it's not done yet. So I'll put it out when it's done."

BTW contributor Fernando Garibay recently stopped by the MTV News offices in Santa Monica, California, and shared the vision he has in mind for Gaga's next release.

"I get a little bit of anxiety thinking about that right now," the producer said of plans for the album. "I wanna just always try to outdo ourselves, our songs.

"They're already incredible songs. But I feel like she's so young," he said, adding that the record is in its early stages and that "there's a lot of room to grow."

While Gaga will hit the road on the Born This Way Tour next year, Garibay said that won't halt the recording process. "The last record we made in bus stops and hotel rooms," he said. "Wherever she's at, we'll make it."

However the recording schedule pans out, Garibay knows he and Gaga will continue experimenting with new sounds. "She's the perfect platform for me to express myself," he said. "You can do stuff with her that you can't do with anybody else. It's amazing."

What are you expecting from Gaga's next album? Share your ideas in the comments!

Nicki Minaj and Willow Smith shot the video for the kid star's pumped-up "Fireball" last month in Los Angeles, and the party-rocking duo plan to show the world the fruits of their labor Wednesday. Their clip for the newest single from Willow's upcoming debut album will premiere on BET's "106 & Park."

In a sea of scenes teased in a 30-second trailer on BET's website, Willow is decked out in a number of colorful, over-the-top, futuristic outfits. It also previews a big dance number in which Smith shows off some sassy moves.

A majority of the teaser takes place in a city setting. Minaj, in rainbow-colored fur boots and a dress made of teddy bears, dances around with the young singer.

Smith plans to release her debut album, Willow: You Think You Know Me, this April. According to Jukebox, who worked with the 10-year-old on several tracks, the album will focus on her youthfulness. "Willow is a combination of what 'Whip My Hair' was. Willow just isn't a pop star, she isn't just an urban artist; she's very international," he said. "A lot of her music has a very big influence of everything from rock to pop to hip-hop."

"Fireball" is the follow-up to Willow's other releases, "21st Century Girl" and the instant viral smash "Whip My Hair." "It's just the whole process," Jukebox added. "You got to think about it: She's a 10-year-old girl. She's gotta have a life, she's gotta be a kid."

'Hunger Games' Composer Leaves Film

Danny Elfman reportedly has scheduling issues as he's currently also working on 'Dark Shadows' and 'Men in Black 3.'

Danny Elfman, the man behind the iconic scores for most of Tim Burton's films, may not be heading to Panem.

The Academy Award-nominated composer has reportedly dropped out of "The Hunger Games," according to Variety. Elfman is said to have left the production for scheduling reasons, as he is currently working on the music for "Dark Shadows," and "Men in Black 3."

Lionsgate declined to comment, but a source close to the production confirmed Elfman's departure due to scheduling conflict with MTV News.

James Newton Howard, the composer responsible for dozens of famous scores, including "Batman Begins," has reportedly taken the reins from Elfman in what was described as a smooth transition. The change will have no effect on the post-production and release schedules for the film. Newton Howard has scored an impressive eight Academy Award nominations over the years for films that include "Defiance, "Michael Clayton" and "The Village."

Elfman was set to collaborate on the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' young-adult novel with T-Bone Burnett, the songwriter who won an Oscar for his work on 2009's "Crazy Heart." Burnett will reportedly remain on the production as the film's executive music producer. Burnett had previously raved to MTV News about working with Elfman on the project, telling us in August of his collaborator, "He's got an incredible space he's put together. It's the most incredible studio I've ever seen and he's got drums and marimbas and a cimbalom — just crazy instruments everywhere. We're just going to go over there and rock out. I think we're just going to play together. We're going to do it together."

Howard, meanwhile, has more than a full plate of upcoming projects. Among his future musical endeavors are two of next year's biggest films: "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "The Bourne Legacy."

"The Hunger Games" is set for release on March 23, 2012, and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, with Gary Ross directing.

Carrie Underwood Wins Big At American Country Awards

It was another lucky trip to Las Vegas for Carrie Underwood at Monday night's American Country Awards, where the former "American Idol" winner collected a trio of trophies at the star-studded event. While Jason Aldean was the top prize-getter with six awards, including Artist of the Year, Underwood took home three, including Female Artist of the Year, and Music Video and Single of the Year by a Female Artist for "Mama's Song."

Aldean was the night's biggest nominee, tied with eight nods with the Zac Brown Band. The singer's My Kinda Party swept up Album of the Year, Touring Artist of the Year and Single of the Year by a Male Artist for the album's title track. He also scored Single and Music Video of the Year for "Don't You Wanna Stay," a collaboration with original "Idol" winner .

Underwood and Clarkson weren't the only twang-pop "Idol" alumni to take home the Fender Stratocaster guitar-shaped hardware at the show, co-hosted by Kristin Chenoweth and Trace Adkins. Last year's winner, country crooning high schooler Scotty McCreery, was named New Artist of the Year on the same day his debut album, Clear as Day, went gold.

The night mostly belonged to Nashville's new school, as such up-and-comers as Thompson Square nabbed a trio of guitars -- Single of the Year by a New Artist and by a Group and Music Video by a New Artist for "Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not." The Breakthrough Artist of the Year winner Chris Young also won Single of the Year for "Voices." Grammy winners Lady Antebellum were named Group of the Year.

These kinds of shows are typically another notch in Taylor Swift's belt, but despite six nominations, she ended the night with no new hardware.
