Casey Abrams Likens 'American Idol' Judges' Input To 'Jelly Beans'

Posted: 04 May 2011 04:12 AM PDT

'You piece it together and it's like the jelly beans in a big jar,' 'Idol' castoff tells MTV News, with Jennifer Lopez as 'buttered popcorn' flavor.

It's a lot to take in. Imagine being on TV for the first time in your life, in front of several hundred screaming fans in a Los Angeles studio and more than 20 million at home, and not only performing a cover of a song you may not even know, but listening to feedback on your work from three judges, mentor/ record industry legend Jimmy Iovine and the show's producers.

It can be a head-swimming proposition, but for just-booted "American Idol" bass-slapper Casey Abrams, filtering all of that information was not as hard as it sounds.

"I tended to listen to the coaches more," he said of the "Idol" team of behind-the-scenes vocal coaches that includes associate music director and arranger Michael Orland. "He's sick and he's funny in a weird way. And I just trusted him musically."

But Abrams, who studied music and music theory at California's Idyllwild Arts Academy, also combined that with the words of wisdom from the producers, Iovine and the judges' comments from the previous week. "You piece it together and it's like the jelly beans in a big jar," Abrams explained. "You're not gonna be like, 'Hey producer what do you think? Oh, you think that?' "

In other words, none of those other voices are enough to push a performance in one direction or another, but rather, they're all pieces of a tapestry. There are always those weird flavors in a jelly bean jar, though, like your cotton candy or root beer, right?

"The buttered-popcorn jelly bean would have to be J.Lo," Abrams said of the judge he famously smooched on the show. "Right? She's buttery?"

Beastie Boys' Hot Sauce History: Tossing Out The First Batch In 2009

With Hot Sauce Committee, Part Two just out, we look back to when the first batch was overdone.

The last time the Beastie Boys were contemplating the release of a new batch of their lyrical and funktastic goodness, they were anticipating the inauguration of President Obama and searching for inspiration in those four crucial letters: H-O-P-E.

"I'd say indirectly he has inspired us," a bundled-up Ad-Rock told MTV News back on January 9, 2009, 11 days before Obama took the oath of office. "You know, with hope brings a sort of sense of fun and some type of pleasure and I feel like we have had a pleasurable amount of fun recording our new record."

And while they didn't quite have their political moves down — Ad-Rock's answer to former President Clinton's signature emphatic thumbs-up was a kind of Howie Mandel-esque "come give daddy a hug" gesture — MCA predicted at the time that the then-untitled work would hit in May of that year.

That plan was thrown out, though, when MCA (born Adam Yauch) announced that he was battling cancer in his salivary glands and would be undergoing surgery. In addition to pushing back the album as he healed, the group canceled all their summer 2009 tour dates and announced tentative plans to release Hot Sauce Committee in fall 2010. That, of course, also didn't happen and somewhere along the way, as these things are wont to do in the world of Beastie, Part One morphed into Part Two.

But let's get back to 2009. At the time, there was, of course, the usual multiple dead-end comedic roads the Boys led us down in discussing the then in-the-works first version of the album. They included MCA seemingly announcing that "his" CD was gonna drop around May 5, which led Ad-Rock and Mike D to wonder what this solo album was that they were not aware of.

"Yo, my album gonna drop ... " MCA started in a mock tone.

"You have a solo album?," a hurt Mike D asked.

"You guys didn't know about that?" MCA countered.

"Is that coming out at the same time as the jewelry and perfume line?" D wondered.

"No, Justin Timberlake and I are working on the jewelry thing on the side," MCA explained. "Actually, a ladies' watch that he and I are designing, a beautiful ladies' watch crusted with diamonds."

And, in keeping with their legendary lyrical and vocal interplay, Ad-Rock had to chuckle at that description, sniggering, "crusted" like a live-action, long-lost cousin of "Beavis and Butt-head."

At the time, when asked about reported guests on the album, they confirmed spots by M.I.A., Young Jeezy and Snoop Dogg, as well as Jarvis Cocker from 1990s Britpop band Pulp. Oh, and "Barbara." Wait, who?

"Barbara ... Barbara's my neighbor," Ad-Rock said to a confused Mike D.

"I thought you were talking about Barbara Bush," MCA threw in, with all the boys laughing at the mention of the name.

"We actually don't have any of those people on the record, it's just a rumor," Ad-Rock clarified. "So far, it's us, though," he smiled, trying out his arms-wide-open, not-yet-signature political move one more time.

It's still unclear which songs from the unreleased Part One made it onto the sequel, but what we do know is that Nas and Santigold figure on a pair of songs and that the first single, "Make Some Noise," had a seriously classic coming-out party in the "Fight for Your Right Revisited" short film.

Although it's not quite summer yet, the summer movie season is already off to a fine start with souped-up car flick "Fast Five" dominating the box office. This week, the mighty "Thor" bows into theaters, the first of several superhero movies headed into cineplexes in 2011.

MTV News has been on the case of this film since the beginning, and thanks to a series of recent interviews with the cast, we have even more material to present, like character introductions, "Avengers" teases and now, a couple of hints at what you won't see in the theatrical version, but on the Blu-ray/DVD.

In addition to what director Kenneth Branagh said about the special features, we asked Tom Hiddleston, who plays Thor's brother and god of mischief Loki, what deleted scenes we might see on the DVD.

"There was a fun scene with myself and Chris before he gets crowned king where we were two brothers waiting in the wings in a way, which I quite enjoyed, but I can see exactly why Kenneth hasn't kept it in the film," he said of one of his favorite scenes to shoot that didn't make the final cut.

Jaimie Alexander, who plays Thor's childhood friend and fellow warrior Lady Sif, said she's worried there might be a lot of blooper footage.

"Oh man, they shot so much of us in rehearsal in stunt practice, getting hit in the face and being idiots," she revealed. "So I'm sure you'll see a lot of that, especially from me. There are a lot of extra battle sequences that they didn't put in the film. Extended Jotunheim battle and extended destroyer battle, which I'm sure they'll put on the DVD extras."

Check out everything we've got on "Thor."

For the second time in three years, the vampires of "Twilight" are leading the charge at the MTV Movie Awards. For this year's show, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's "Eclipse" flick nabbed eight nominations — including Best Movie, Best Fight and Best Kiss — narrowly besting the dream thieves of "Inception" (seven noms) and the wizards of "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1" (six noms). All three films have been nominated for Best Movie and will compete with "Black Swan" (four nods) and "The Social Network" (five nods) for the night's top prize. (Here is the complete list of 2011 MTV Movie Awards nominees.)

Hosted by Jason Sudeikis, the 20th annual MTV Movie Awards airs live on Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET, from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. Starting Tuesday (May 3) you'll be able to head to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for a winner in every category until June 4. Voting for Best Movie, however, will stay open throughout the awards show — meaning you'll have a chance to affect the night's biggest prize until the very last minute.

Stewart and Pattinson, who each took home a best performance win at last year's show, are again competing in those respective categories. For Female Performance, Stewart ("Eclipse") goes up against Emma Stone ("Easy A"), Emma Watson ("Deathly Hallows"), Jennifer Aniston ("Just Go With It") and Natalie Portman ("Black Swan"). Pattinson ("Eclipse") vies for Male Performance with Radcliffe ("Deathly Hallows"), Jesse Eisenberg ("The Social Network"), Taylor Lautner ("Eclipse") and Zac Efron ("Charlie St. Cloud").

This year, MTV is introducing a new category, Best Line From a Movie, which pits the likes of Jessie Eisenberg in "Social Network" ("If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you'd have invented Facebook") against Tom Hardy in "Inception" ("You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling") and Alexys Nycole Sanchez in "Grown Ups" ("I want to get chocolate wasted").

Justin Bieber makes his debut in the Movie Awards nomination process, as the 17-year-old pop phenom enters the Best Jaw-Dropping Moment fray. The "Never Say Never" star faces off against James Franco ("127 Hours"), Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page ("Inception"), Natalie Portman ("Black Swan") and Steve-O ("Jackass 3D").

The Best Kiss category features a lip-smacking showdown of "Twilight" franchise stars: Stewart and Pattinson versus Stewart and Lautner, in addition to Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon-Levitt ("Inception"), Watson and Radcliffe ("Deathly Hallows") and Portman and Mila Kunis ("Black Swan"). Reigning Best Villain champ Tom Felton ("Deathly Hallows") returns to the fold once again to battle Christoph Waltz ("The Green Hornet"), as well as Leighton Meester ("The Roommate"), Mickey Rourke ("Iron Man 2") and Ned Beatty ("Toy Story 3").

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 20th annual MTV Movie Awards air live on Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET.

Britney Spears Says Femme Fatale Tour Will Be 'Spectacular'

Britney Spears is known for delivering an over-the-top stage show, and she promises that her forthcoming Femme Fatale Tour alongside Nicki Minaj will be no different.

In a new video interview posted on her website, the pop princess opens up about her 26-date summer venture, which is set to kick off June 16 in Sacramento and make its way across North America, before concluding August 13 in Toronto.

"The Femme Fatale Tour will hopefully just be outrageously spectacular," Spears said when asked about the trek. "I'm just hoping that the choreographers will come up with just the most outrageous things, and I'm really excited."

While it's been just over a month since the release of Femme Fatale, Brit gushed about the outing, saying, "This is one of the most excited I've been about a project in a really long time, so I can't wait."

While a set list has yet to surface, it would make sense that some of Spears' personal favorite Femme Fatale cuts will be performed throughout her concert, which she revealed as "He About to Lose Me," "Criminal" and "Till the World Ends."

Fans caught an early glimpse at the forthcoming tour last week when video footage of the pop star rehearsing the Bloodshy & Avant-produced "How I Roll" surfaced online. Wearing a baby-blue sports bra and sweatpants, a smiling Spears showed off some playful dance moves surrounded by a group of dancers.

Spears' manager, Larry Rudolph, told MTV News back in March that the tour is expected to have a postapocalyptic theme in tune with her latest single, "Till the World Ends." "This is exactly the direction we're moving in," he said. " 'Till the World Ends' keeps becoming a theme for us. ... The way we come up with a concept for a show like this is we sit with Britney, she talks to us about what she's interested in and what excites her."

Waka Flocka Flame Cleared Of Drug Charges

Authorities lacked sufficient evidence to take Atlanta MC to trial after raid on Atlanta rapper's home.

A grand jury in Henry County, Georgia, cleared Waka Flocka Flame of drug charges related to a raid of his home in late 2010. Authorities lacked sufficient evidence to justify taking the Atlanta rapper to trial, according to TMZ.

On December 16, Waka's home was raided by Atlanta authorities amid rumors that it was being used to house a prostitution ring, which reps for the "No Hands" rapper vehemently denied. Waka wasn't home at the time it was searched. However, his manager/mother, Deb Antney, and Gucci Mane, were there and subsequently detained by police for a short time. A warrant for Waka's arrest was issued but he didn't turn himself in until January 3, when he was booked on charges that included possession of marijuana and Hydrocodone, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violation of probation for driving on a suspended license.

Waka was released a couple of days later after posting a $31,950 bond. The only charges that eventually made it to the grand jury (all the others were dropped) were for possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana measuring less than an ounce.

Waka (born Juaquin Malphurs) let his Twitter followers know about his good fortune yesterday. "All charges droped from when police ran N my house #GoDsGooD #squad," he tweeted.

In April, Waka appeared on MTV News' "RapFix Live" and relayed that he plans to avoid any future legal entanglements. "A lot of situations I probably put myself into," Waka admitted. "So you just learn from your mistakes."

Lil B, Consequence And Pharoahe Monch Are Coming To 'Rap Fix Live'!

Things will be heating up on Wednesday's edition of MTV News "Rap Fix Live." Not only do we have an exclusive interview with one of the game's hottest up-and-comers, Lil B, we also have fire flame spitter Pharoahe Monch stopping by as well.

If that isn't enough, Consequence will be sitting on the couch with Sway, and he's ready to address all the drama surrounding him, Kanye West and G.O.O.D. Music on "Rap Fix Live" Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Consequence broke onto the rap scene in 1996, appearing on a number of tracks with the iconic Queens rap group A Tribe Called Quest on their Beats, Rhymes and Life LP. From there, Cons continued to make his mark on the mixtape scene before linking up with Kanye West a few years later. Once 'Ye climbed up the rap ranks and developed his own label (G.O.O.D. Music), Consequence was added to the roster, as were other notable acts like Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Pusha T.

In 2007, the Queens MC released his debut album Don't Quit Your Day Job, but his follow-up LP Cons TV has been oft-delayed. As a result, a noticeable, but largely unspoken, rift has grown between Cons and Kanye. When it comes to the situation with West and G.O.O.D. Music, Consequence has been relatively quiet — until now.

That's not all: Pharoahe Monch, whose latest album, W.A.R. (We Are Renegades), has received tons of critical acclaim, will come through to talk about his place in the rap game, while Lil B will give viewers insight into his controversial upcoming album I'm Gay.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Is 'Genuine To Her,' Producer Says

When Lady Gaga released her Born This Way track listing Monday, "Born This Way" producer Fernando Garibay's name was all over it — as was expected, considering he worked intimately with Gaga to produce the tracks that made the final cut. In late February, Garibay spoke to MTV News in detail about Mother Monster's vision for her highly anticipated release.

"She asked me to musically direct the album with her," he explained. "Basically, that means for me, that meant to push her vision out for these records, for the album, but every song is really special.

"Every song tells almost like a musical. It just kind of keeps going forward. We did this [dance] song that possibly might be the third single; it's called 'Marry the Night.' It's probably one of my favorite songs on the album. It tells about being yourself and individuality and never forgetting who you are."

Garibay explained how he and Gaga, along with the other producers on the album such as RedOne and DJ White Shadow, worked on the album.

"What's interesting is that the great thing about dance songs is for me most of the time they start off as ballads and that's the approach I've been trying to keep going," he said. "We wrote songs, particularly Gaga wrote these songs, to live in a dance environment. Yeah, they're dance, but I think the whole thing, too, is that they're songs and genuine to her."

Fans are excited to see what Gaga has up her always-evolving sleeve on this album. And while Garibay knows what it sounds like, he won't give away too many details other than the fact that he's really proud of it.

"I'm excited about the whole album. I'm proud of the way we got together and made this album," he said. "It's a collective of some cool people all trying to facilitate her and to explore her vision, her statement. I'm excited for albums to be albums again, and this is leading in that direction. ... I think the message, the big statement was obviously the single, and I think it's the single, 'Born This Way,' serves as an introduction to the album. Again, it's a statement about equality."

It's been a while since fans have gotten to see Eve spitting some fiery verses while rocking killer couture. But the MC is back now, appearing on Swizz Beatz's funky track "Everyday (Coolin')," from his Haute Living album. She gives her quick cameo her signature sass.

She spits, "Eve-y E, I'm back on my bullsh--/ Came back, came back, back with a full clip/ Who want problem, wah, wah, wah, who want flip?/ Gun taste, one lick, wanna get some of this/ You see that hot pink Birkin, that's a problem/ I'm hot like everything kickin', I'm a problem/ Yeah, I'm a walking bow/ You might talk a lil' one, but your looks are 'oh.' "

MTV News caught up with Eve on Monday, and she spoke to us about "Everyday (Coolin')" and the sleek new black-and-white video for it, which features lots of high-end fashion and one of Diddy's sons as one of the kid dancers.

"The video, well, like you said, that's Swizz [being himself]. People don't know, Swizz's energy is through the roof, but that's what makes him him," Eve said. "It was a dope video. It's very stylish. It's in black-and-white, but you can see everything and Taj, who's an up-and-coming director, directed it and he's real dope."

Flashing lights, high-octane energy and playful set-ups make for one eye-catching video. "[Taj] has a great eye and a lot of the stuff looks like it could have been a still picture, and I think that's how he wanted it," she said of the fashion-shoot vibe. "And I think, just look-wise, obviously, I wanted to make sure I looked amazing, so Swizz is beyond it. He's got his dance moves; I couldn't keep up. I couldn't keep up with the dance moves, but I think a lot of people are going to like the video."

Lil B is unpredictable. The polarizing rapper, who has most recently made headlines for naming his upcoming album I'm Gay, is now collaborating with Roc Nation signee Jay Electronica. According to B, the pair are working together on an EP.

For the most part, B — who is most famous for his simplistic songs like "Ellen DeGeneres" and "I'm Miley Cyrus" — isn't taken seriously as a lyricist, while Jay is regarded as one of the game's top up-and-coming MCs. So for hip-hop purists, the collaboration may seem odd, but it makes perfect sense to Lil B.

"If you listen to Jay Electronica's first mixtape that he had 'Exhibit C' on, and if you really listen to him, there's a lot of stuff that I feel in my heart are similarities," B said. "You know, like, subject matter. It's another level that we're in tune on, because we're here for the positivity and to make a change."

Although Lil B has collaborated with well-regarded hip-hop artists like producer 9th Wonder and MCs Phonte and Jean Grae in the past, he admits that much of what he does isn't necessarily rooted in lyricism but rather in making "the women go nuts." Still, the Based God promises to deliver substance on the upcoming collaboration.

"This project with Jay is gonna be very spiritual, very uplifting, very deep," he said. "It will be historical."

As of yet, there is no name or date for Lil B and Jay Electronica's upcoming release, but be sure to check MTV News for details as they develop.

And be sure to check out "RapFix Live" Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com for more on our interview with Lil B the Based God, along with Consequence and Pharoahe Monch.

Wiz Khalifa is constantly on the road, and with every tour and each city he visits, the Pittsburgh MC picks up more and more fans. When MTV News caught up with him on his tour bus backstage at Bamboozle, he said his fans aren't just the cool kids anymore.

"Before, it was all of the cool crowd or just the kids that were up on what was new. We kind of all dressed the same and looked the same and were into the same things," Wiz explained. "It kind of spread: a lot more females, a lot of different ages of people. There was a kid that I'm sure was 12 years old, singing every word pointing at me, so that in itself is really powerful."

The Rolling Papers Tour kicks off June 12 in Missouri and lasts through early August. And while Wiz is still enjoying the fruits of success from his latest single, "Roll Up," he already knows what the next single off his album will be.

"The third single on there is going to be 'No Sleep.' That's why we put it out on iTunes earlier, just to go ahead, to get people ready for it," Wiz said. "It goes crazy when we perform it," he added. "Right now, we just continuing with 'Roll Up.' It's still doing what it's doing at radio. It's building and it's selling so many more copies. We're going to wait a little bit and then probably do a video for 'No Sleep.'

The Insane Clown Posse made their festival comeback this past weekend at Bamboozle, alongside acts like Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars and Wiz Khalifa. Now, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope are set to make their musical return, too, with their upcoming album, The Mighty Death Pop!.

The LP marks ICP's second time working with longtime producer Mike E. Clark since their reconciliation. And while the duo haven't locked in a release date yet, they say they aren't looking to rush things, either.

"It don't have no official release date for right now, but we ain't rushing nothing," Shaggy told MTV News at Bamboozle. "We're taking our time. We're doing what we do in the studio, coming out with the best record that we can do and, right now, it's gravy man."

Each album the Detroit duo has released is referred to as a "joker's card," which means Mighty Death Pop! is the second joker's card of the second deck. The group released a "face" last year during their annual Hallowick Clown Show in their hometown; that was believed to be the face of the Mighty Death Pop!. But Violent J said there's more to the story.

"There's actually two faces of the Mighty Death Pop!. As soon as you see the other face, it will totally make sense. Right now, I know that's confusing, but when you see the other face, it's sort of a before-and-after deal. You'll see them both together and you'll totally get it.

Tom Felton Humbled By 'Deathly Hallows' MTV Movie Awards Nod

Last year at the MTV Movie Awards, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" villain Tom Felton conquered the likes of Christoph Waltz's stone-cold Nazi colonel in "Inglourious Basterds" and Ken Jeong's oft-naked mob boss from "The Hangover" to win Best Villain.

This year, Felton's conflicted wizard, Draco Malfoy, returns to the villain category, where he's got to be considered the frontrunner as he gets ready to fight off Waltz ("The Green Hornet"), Leighton Meester ("The Roommate"), Mickey Rourke ("Iron Man 2") and Ned Beatty ("Toy Story 3").

"That's awesome," Felton told MTV News about the new nomination. "People have been voting, so it's amazing."

His 2010 win ended up being a little wacky, as Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell hung above the stage after handing out the award and proceeded to give the young British actor some good-natured grief as he delivered an acceptance speech. This time around, Felton is hoping to have a second, less bizarre go of things. "It was a kind of a blur last year, so I'd be very excited if I get the chance to go back and do it again," he laughed.

The 20th annual MTV Movie Awards air live on Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET, from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. Starting Tuesday (May 3), you can head to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for a winner in every category, including Best Villain.

To his legions of fans that keep clicking over to the site and casting votes for Draco, Felton expressed his gratitude. "All I can send is my endless appreciation to everyone who is online and campaigning," he said. "I really appreciate it. It's an endless, sweet gesture, after 10 years, that Draco gets a lot of love. It's ironic, in a way, but I love it and appreciate it very much."

"In a way, even though he's known as a slimy bully, he's not really that villainous," Felton added. "There's actually a sweet little boy there. They love to hate me!"

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" is nominated for eight MTV Movie Awards, eclipsing the competition and leading the (wolf) pack as the most nominated film at this year's show.

With so many chances to take home some Golden Popcorn come Sunday, June 5, things look pretty good for "Eclipse," especially considering the franchise's Movie Awards history. Let's take a look at their 2011 prospects:

Best Movie
The competition: "Eclipse" is up against "Black Swan," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1," "Inception" and "The Social Network."

Has "Twilight" won before?: Yes. In 2009, "Twilight" took home the prize, and in 2010, "New Moon" won. Will the streak stay alive for a third year? That's up to fans.

Best Female Performance
The competition: Kristen Stewart is up against Emma Stone ("Easy A"), Emma Watson ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1"), Jennifer Aniston ("Just Go With It") and Natalie Portman ("Black Swan").

Has "Twilight" won before?: KStew won in 2009 and 2010 and has her eye on the threepeat.

Best Male Performance
The competition: Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson are up against Daniel Radcliffe ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1"), Jesse Eisenberg ("The Social Network") and Zac Efron ("Charlie St. Cloud").

Has "Twilight" won before?: In 2009, no one from "Twilight" was nominated, and Zac Efron took it home for "High School Musical 3." In 2010, both guys were nominated and RPattz won (he also took home the Global Superstar award). Could this be Taylor's year?

Best Breakout Star
The competition: Xavier Samuel is up against Andrew Garfield ("The Social Network"), Chloë Grace Moretz ("Kick-Ass"), Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit"), Jay Chou ("The Green Hornet") and Olivia Wilde ("Tron Legacy").

Has "Twilight" won before?: In 2009, RPattz won the then-gender-specific Breakthrough Male Performance award. In 2010, "Twilight" castmate Anna Kendrick won for her work in "Up in the Air." Perhaps some of that luck will rub off on Xavier?

Best Fight
The competition: Robert Pattinson's fight vs. Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel is up against Amy Adams vs. the Sisters ("The Fighter"), Chloë Grace Moretz vs. Mark Strong ("Kick-Ass"), Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint vs. Death Eaters ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1") and Joseph Gordon-Levitt vs. Hallway Attacker ("Inception").

Has "Twilight" won before?: Cam Gigandet and Pattinson's big fight won in 2009, but "The Twilight Saga" wasn't nominated last year, when Beyoncé and Ali Larter took it home for "Obsessed." Perhaps voters will declare vamp fights the new catfights in 2011.

Best Kiss
The competition: Kristen Stewart's kiss with Robert Pattinson and her smooch with Taylor Lautner are up against Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis ("Black Swan"), Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon-Levitt ("Inception") and Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1").

Has "Twilight" won before?: KStew and RPattz have ruled this category for two years running. Maybe fans will give the Bella and Jacob love a little shine at the 2011 Movie Awards.

DJ Khalil, Chace Infinite Go 'Viral' For Self Scientific

Mixtape: Trials of the Blackhearted

Essential Info: DJ Khalil hasn't forgotten where he came from. Before he was an in-demand West Coast producer working on projects from the likes of Drake, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Game and 50 Cent, Khalil made up one half of Self Scientific, along with MC Chace Infinite. And while the duo hasn't released a full-fledged project since their 2005 album, Change, they've re-emerged, dropping the eight-song Trials of the Blackhearted as a free download online.

"We kinda missed the whole Internet, viral thing," DJ Khalil told Mixtape Daily. "We weren't really heavy on that. Now, we're kinda building up our buzz again. It's almost like we're starting from scratch, but it's great."

Blackhearted, produced entirely by Khalil, features Chace on the mic and guest appearances from Game, Talib Kweli, Big K.R.IT. and Freddie Gibbs. The goal is to open up the group to a new audience, one already used to getting their music on the Net for free. For Self Scientific, it was a matter of keeping up with their contemporaries and fitting their brand of hip-hop into this new method of distribution.

"We have new fans, more people are on to what we're doing and we're just gonna consistently drop music," Khalil said. "We have a lot to say. It's the perfect timing for us. We feel like we have music that can match anybody at this point."

The heart-wrenching "War Stories" tells the tale of young hustlers in the inner city who do what they have to in order to survive. Game and Kweli help out on the inspirational "Everywhere I Go," while "Peaceful" is a dedication to Oscar Grant, the young Black man who was murdered by a police officer in Oakland back in 2009.

"I feel we've always been ahead of the curve with music and what we talk about," the producer boasted. "Right now, where music is, everybody wants to hear something different' they want to hear something real."

For the die-hard Stephenie Meyer fans out there worried about going into withdrawal after "Breaking Dawn: Part 2" descends upon theaters in November 2012, fear not. The movie adaptation of author's other best-seller, "The Host," has found a star in Saoirse Ronan.

According to Deadline, the film, which was written by Andrew Niccol for independent production company Inferno, will reportedly be looking to find a distributor at the Cannes International Film Festival next week.

Meyer is said to have been heavily involved in the process, and selected writer/director Niccol because she was a fan of his films "Gattaca" and his script for "The Truman Show."

"The Host" is the story of Melanie Stryder, one of the last humans to have avoided capture by an alien race called Souls. The Souls operate more like parasites in that they invade human bodies, fuse to each person's consciousness and erase their personalities. Melanie is eventually implanted by a Soul called Wanderer. Somehow, however, Melanie avoids surrendering her consciousness to Wanderer, who is so overwhelmed by her host's memories and feelings, the alien is driven to reconnect with Melanie's old life. As the two share Melanie's body, they find an underground colony of humans hiding from the Souls.

The 17-year-old Ronan, known for her noteworthy performances in films like "Atonement," "The Lovely Bones" and most recently, "Hanna," will reportedly play both Melanie and Wanderer.

Meyer will be attending the festival to help present the project to prospective buyers.

It seems that every interview with Katy Perry focuses on three topics: her boobs, her marriage to Russell Brand and her Evangelical childhood. She addresses all those topics once again in the June issue of Vanity Fair, which hits newsstands nationwide next week.

Gracing the cover in a nude-colored bodysuit, her hair cascading in front of her famous face, Perry says that while those three topics are certainly a part of her core, there's a lot more to her than just that. "I don't care what people say about my relationship; I don't care what they say about my boobs. People are buying my songs. I have a sold-out tour," she says of the California Dreams trek. "I'm getting incredible feedback from my music."

To this day, she remains hungry, noting, "I don't take anything for granted. There are 500 other girls right behind me, and I know that, because I was one of them. I remember what it's like to be someone who's always trying to get there — sending out tons of e-mails ... trying to connect with some person who could connect me with some other person. And I wouldn't be working at this pace now if I didn't truly know that fame is fleeting."

There are distractions, she says, but she has people in her life who keep her grounded. "If the core, the honesty, my story, isn't working, then all those bells and whistles aren't going to work, either," she explains. "Sometimes I can be distracted by the glamor and the fabulousness. But my husband always reminds me to keep the core intact.

"I just think I have to appreciate every day, every opportunity, work hard, and continue to evolve as an artist," she continues. "I already know my future evolution, where I'm going to go. I mean, I'm touring in f---ing Indonesia, for crying out loud."

Perry reveals that her relationship with Brand is always exciting. "[He] never lied to me once. I trust him; there's just a level of trust that we've built up," she says of the man she married in 2010 adding that a Twitpic Brand tweeted of her in bed without makeup didn't bother her.

"We were just messing around," she said. "I didn't really care. I mean, when I go to rehearsals I look like that. I'm every woman. It takes a village to make me who I am. ... You don't have to wake up looking like, you know, Gisele [Bündchen]."

Nick Jonas Says Writing 'One Day' For Charice Was 'Organic'

Youngest JoBro also discusses possibility of following in Charice's footsteps by guest-starring on 'Glee.'

Nick Jonas has always been somewhat of a prodigy. So it's no surprise that he is spending his time away from the Jonas Brothers crafting tracks for other pop singers. And the track he wrote for Charice, "One Day," which recently premiered in an Acuvue commercial during an episode of "Glee," shows Jonas' ability to branch out and write for other singers' voices.

"I co-wrote the song while I was in Nashville, and it's a cool song," Jonas told MTV News. "Basically, the agency came and said, 'Hey we need a song with this lyric ['one day'] and if you could, find a way to craft it.' It was a really organic vibe that came from the songwriting session where we said, 'If we can infuse this word here, that'd be cool.' "

Nick took the task to heart and managed to write a funky, midtempo feel-good track. "The song just came to life then [and] working with Charice was amazing," he said. "I flew to Boston to produce the song for her, and she was shooting a movie there, so it was kind of a fun experience. We had a great time."

"The main thing about Charice that people really connect to ... and kind of really love about her, is the fact that she is a normal girl and really shines because of her vocal talent," he continued. "I was so blessed to produce her vocal. It's amazing to see this big voice come out of her, especially on the song we did." The song was written as apart of the Acuvue campaign, but Nick says it's about more than just contact lenses. "It's a great campaign," he explained. "It's about following your dreams."

And since Charice occasionally guest-stars on "Glee" and the song premiered during an airing of the show, we asked Nick if he's considered getting his Gleek on. "Definitely a fan of the show. I think anything that keeps music a part of popular culture is a great thing," he said. "As a music lover, I'm a big fan of it, especially because all of the songs are classics and I know a lot of the people that produce the music for that show and I think they do a great job. So if there was a role for me that they thought would be cool, I'd love to do it."

'Thor' Stars Anthony Hopkins, Kat Dennings Break Down Their Characters

Tom Hiddleston and and Jaimie Alexander also give MTV News the 'character 101' rundown on their roles.

When an actor takes on a role in a comic book movie, he or she signs up for more than the normal challenges associated with filmmaking and must embody a character beloved and obsessed over by fans for years (sometimes decades). The stars of "Thor" had more than their fair share of mythology to absorb before production began, save for Kat Dennings, whose character Darcy didn't exist prior to the movie.

When MTV News caught up with a few of the "Thor" players, we asked them to give us a brief "character 101" for those not familiar with the world of Asgard and the god of thunder.

"Odin is just god of the universe," Sir Anthony Hopkins said of his powerful character. "The father of Thor. That's all I know." He also admitted that, try as he might to understand the complex Nordic mythology, he didn't delve too deeply into it.

Tom Hiddleston, who plays Thor's underappreciated and overlooked brother Loki, had a little more to say about what his character is working with.

"Loki is the god of mischief, the Norse god of mischief. He's a prankster, he's a trickster, he's an agent of chaos," he explained. "A behind-the-curtain puppet master, pulling the strings of the universe. He's also Thor's brother, and he's betrayed and has a sort of suitcase of pain that he's carrying around the whole time. He's damaged, lost and alone and vulnerable."

Aww. But before you go feeling sorry for Loki, don't forget about his powers. "When he's that intelligent and that good at magic, you don't want to piss him off," Hiddleston advised.

"Darcy is Jane Foster [Natalie Portman]'s assistant and kind of her intern and little-sister figure," Dennings said. "But she's really bad at her job. She mostly just staples things and makes food and drives, but with love."

"Lady Sif is Thor's right-hand man," actress and Jaimie Alexander said. "She's his childhood friend and accompanies him into battle and protects him at all costs.

Alexander added that Sif is the only one who will challenge the haughty Thor about being too cocky. "I think that's the fun thing about Sif," she said.
