| Beastie Boys' <i>Hot Sauce</i> History: Talking <i>License To Ill</i> In 1986 Posted: 02 May 2011 03:52 AM PDT Even though they were still openers on Run-DMC's tour, the Beastie Boys had big plans, as you can see in this classic MTV News clip.
In the summer of '86, the Beastie Boys toured the U.S. (aboard Elvis' old tour bus) as opening acts on Run-DMC's now-legendary Raising Hell Tour. At the time, they had just a handful of singles to their credit ("Hold It, Now Hit It," "She's On It," etc.) and were still months away from the release of their breakout album, License to Ill, but you wouldn't have known it from the way they handled themselves during interviews. They had — to use a phrase that carried absolutely no cultural significance during the meaty years of the Reagan administration — a fair amount of swag.
How do we know? Because MTV News covered the Raising Hell trek to no end, as evidenced by this July conversation with the Boys aboard their infamous tour bus (there were, of course, many shout-outs to their driver, Tadlock, and his glasses). In it, Ad-Rock, MCA and Mike D discuss the songs that would make up Ill — and one that ultimately didn't make the cut for legal reasons — and their plans for global domination. And, with comeback album The Hot Sauce Committee Part Two set to hit stores Tuesday, we decided to unearth some of that 1986 chat right now — just like we did a few weeks back, when they premiered their epic "Fight for Your Right Revisited" video. Try not to be blown away by just how young they look. Or by the fact that MCA keeps a bat at his side the entire time. "The Beastie Boys album is gonna be def ... kinda fly in a B-Boy way, mainly. Stupid def," Ad-Rock proclaimed. "It includes the most fun on any album ever, and that's why we have Elvis' bus. You can look forward to a lot of good times on the Beastie Boys album. It's real fun ... kinda like new wave, Euro disco type of stuff. " 'Paul Revere,' it's like the origin of the Beastie Boys, as told by Run," he continued. "And we got 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn' and 'Time to Get Ill,' 'I'm Down' and 'Girls' — we got a lot of cool songs on it." "I'm Down," of course, was a reworking of the Beatles' B-side of the same name (as Ad-Rock joked, "[It] was written by John Lennon. It was the last thing he wrote before he got dusted"), and thanks to a licensing issue, it was deleted from Ill at the last minute. Still, if the Beasties knew about any impending legal drama, they didn't let our interviewer know about it; rather, they were focused on taking over the world, one party-hearty anthem at a time. When Blake Lively found out she was going to be included on this year's Time 100 list of the world's most-influential people, she knew exactly who she wanted to get to write her blurb, even if it might be a stretch. The "Gossip Girl" star gushed about "Moulin Rouge" director Baz Luhrmann when she spoke to MTV News about the film's influence in anticipation of today's "Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event."
"Oh my gosh! I actually asked Baz to write this piece because he is somebody, my whole life, who I've idolized," she said. "Everything he's ever done has been so inspiring to me, so I thought, 'Well, let's just ask him. There's no way he'll do it.' But he did, and I can't believe it. It makes the honor that much greater." Her love isn't just for Luhrmann, but also his kitschy, fun 2001 flick. "Oh my gosh! You're lucky I'm not breaking into song right now," she joked. "As soon as I had red hair I was so excited 'cause I thought, 'Yes! I'm Satine!' " MTV News will reunite Luhrmann, and the movie's stars, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, on today at 3 p.m. ET on MTV.com. The director and actors will be joined by co-star John Leguizamo, who played artist Toulouse-Lautrec, and Catherine Martin, who won the Oscar for costume design and art direction. Hosted by MTV News' Josh Horowitz, the live stream will include special appearances and live interviews while looking back at how the film came to be and how its legacy continues to grow.
