Beastie Boys' <i>Hot Sauce</i> History: Lee Perry Rides The Subway

Posted: 03 May 2011 03:52 AM PDT

With Hot Sauce Committee, Part Two due in stores today, we look back to 1998, when the Beasties rode the wheels of steel with 'Scratch.'

In 1998, the Beastie Boys had entered a new phase in their career. Buoyed by the success of 1992's Check Your Head and '95's Ill Communication, they had become a respected, downright revered act, the kind capable of doing whatever they want, with whomever they saw fit. They had certainly earned that right, and on their Hello Nasty album, they were determined to take full advantage.

And while we can only speculate how songs like "I Don't Know" (featuring Miho Hatori, then of Cibo Matto, on guest vocals), the Krautrock-indebted "And Me," the jazzy, bossa-nova instrumentals-laden "Sneakin' Out the Hospital" and "Song for Junior" ended up making the cut, we know for sure that the Beasties' "whenever/whomever" mantra was directly responsible for Nasty's most out-there cut, "Dr. Lee, PhD."

As the title implies, it features none other than Lee "Scratch" Perry, the legendary Jamaican dub icon/ amateur shaman/ madman whom the Beasties had famously featured on the cover of the second issue of their Grand Royal magazine, shouted-out on '94's "Sure Shot" and toured with in Japan in '96. Over the course of its five minutes, Perry grunts and whinnies, bobs and weaves, plays the odd percussive instrument and drops dancehall toasts like, "The Beastly Brothers, and the Beastly Boys, with their beastly toys, they give ya some beastly joys." Needless to say, it not only captures everything that was — and still is — wonderfully odd about Perry, but serves as a pretty good example of the kind of clout the Beasties had achieved at this point.

And so, with their new album, Hot Sauce Committee, Part Two, out on Tuesday (May 3), we decided to dig a little further into the Beasties/Perry collaboration. Much like we did on Monday, we're taking you back in time ... all the way back to April 1998, when MTV News sat down with Ad-Rock, Mike D and MCA to discuss the (then) upcoming Hello Nasty and the experience of working with Scratch in the studio. And, as you can probably guess, it certainly was an experience.

"Lee Perry dresses kind of wild, kind of different than the average bear, and he came in on Halloween, so it was pretty cool," MCA told us. "We went to his hotel and picked him up, and he walked to the studio with us, and he has all these mirrors on his shoes and different color bits of spray paint on his clothes. So he was just walking down the street, and nobody really thought he looked out of the ordinary."

"It was definitely interesting that the fateful night it happened was Halloween, it was perfect," Mike D added at the time. "Because it was, like, downtown New York, where everybody's nuts for Halloween anyway and then, Lee Perry in the midst of that, dressed how he was."

After they got Perry to their studio — where he hammered out his verses in two takes — there was still the matter of getting him to a show he had scheduled for that night ... and since there were no taxis to be found, the Beasties were forced to improvise.

"He just came in, immediately heard the track, had his lyrics written out on a poster, one of his posters, just knew exactly what he was doing, like, 'OK, give me the mic, let's do this.' Did like two takes, did like a couple background vocal takes, and then he had to go do a gig that night, a little further downtown," Mike D laughed. "And there's no cabs, no car service, so we actually had to take the subway. Lee 'Scratch' Perry on the subway, which that, in itself was amazing."

What do you think of Hot Sauce Committee, Part Two? We want to hear from you in the comments below!

When Lady Gaga debuts her music video for "Judas" on Thursday, we'll be one step closer to the release of what she once called "the greatest album of this decade." And on Monday, she tweeted the track listing for Born This Way, which hits the streets on May 23.

The "original" album tracks include "Marry the Night," "Born This Way," "Government Hooker," "Judas," "Americano," "Hair," "Scheibe," "Bloody Mary," "Bad Kids," "Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)," "Heavy Metal Lover," "Electric Chapel," "You and I" and "Edge of Glory."

The "special edition" will have five more tracks. "Born This Way Country Road Version," "Judas DJ White Shadow Remix," "Marry the Night Fernando Garibay Remix," "Scheibe DJ White Shadow Mugler" and "Fashion of His Love Fernando Garibay Remix."

DJ White Shadow spoke to MTV News earlier this year and about the album. "I don't even know how to explain it. [Born This Way] is not a pop album; it's a pop masterpiece of music. If there was no category of pop music, you wouldn't call it pop music," he said.

"She thinks of sh-- that I can't comprehend," he added. "It doesn't make sense to me, and I'm a creative person. ... Working with her is totally different than anyone else I've ever done anything with. She's the most hands-on person I've ever run into. She could walk into Steve Jobs' office and tell him he's doing Apple wrong, and he'd listen. As a producer, it's super cool to be with somebody who generally cares and is fully involved."

Gaga also tweeted her excitement over the "Judas" video. "JUDASVIDEO PREMIERE 5.5.11 on E! 7/6c + 11:30/10c. Motorcycle Fellini PopArt FantasyFilm + Haus Directorial Debut," she shared and tweeted an image from the video. In it, Gaga rides a motorcycle and leads a gang as they ride a highway.

'Moulin Rouge' Could Have Starred Heath Ledger, Baz Luhrmann Reveals

"Moulin Rouge At 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event" on Monday (May 2) brought out the best of the best via a live-stream chat with director Baz Luhrmann, actor John Leguizamo and Catherine Martin, who won the Oscar for costume design and art direction, not to mention a Skype interview with star Ewan McGregor.

And although we can't imagine a "Moulin Rouge" without stars Nicole Kidman and McGregor, one of the interesting tidbits that came out of the discussion was the fact that there were several high-profile actors in contention for those roles, including Heath Ledger, Courtney Love and Jake Gyllenhaal.

"I saw everyone," Luhrmann said of his lengthy audition process. "I have audition material of people you wouldn't believe. I know who can really sing, people who've got amazing voices, from that process.

"Dear Heath Ledger, [he had] incredible scenes with Nicole," Luhrmann revealed. "Because at one stage, Christian [the role that went to McGregor] was very young, he was a younger guy, and then I was aware of Ewan but I didn't know if he could sing."

Another familiar face up for the role of Christian was Jake Gyllenhaal.

"Jake should do a musical," Luhrmann said. "He's a wonderful actor, but [he has a] great voice, tremendous voice. He sang some [Stephen] Sondheim for me, complicated singing, great voice. When is he going to guest on 'Glee?' "

Luhrmann went on to talk about Courtney Love's involvement with the film, as a potential actress and as the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.

"Courtney had two parts to the process," he revealed. "I worked with Courtney. She was fascinating, she was beguiling. Also, without Courtney's approval, we would never have [Nirvana's] 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' in 'Moulin Rouge,' and I had to go and show her the whole piece," he said. "She's absolutely fantastic. I adore her spirit. She's wild and unpredictable and a great performer."

Osama Bin Laden's Death Brings 'Closure' For Some NYU Students

'It's a sense of not only victory, but taking back what was taken from us,' Olivia Morris tells MTV News.

Michael Saidian, 21, was only in sixth grade when the Twin Towers fell. At the time, he said he felt afraid and unprotected. Now, nearly a decade later, with the news Sunday that Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. military operatives in Pakistan, the New York University student said he finally feels a sense of closure.

"It was really a moment where I felt some joy and I felt some closure for everything that happened in 9/11," he told MTV News.

His sentiments were echoed by other students interviewed at New York University's campus Monday afternoon, many of whom were too young to understand the events of September 11, 2001, but still remember the event that marked their generation.

Olivia Morris, a freshman at NYU, who was in fourth grade at the time of the World Trade Center attacks, said she felt a wave of frenzied energy and excitement when her roommates relayed the news that Bin Laden had been killed.

"I feel that, as a generation and having really grown up with this being perpetuated for 10 years, it's a sense of not only victory, but taking back what was taken from us," Morris said.

Aakash Bhatia, a freshman at the school from Princeton, New Jersey, said he and his roommates went to Ground Zero after hearing the news of Bin Laden's death.

"After all these years, when I heard what had happened, it hit me directly too, because I was such a kid and I saw all the things changed as a result of 9/11. ... The whole track of the nation was altered by this momentous event, and I was there to witness that from the beginning," he said.

Bhatia added that, while the death of Bin Laden signifies an end to one chapter of 9/11, it's not a resolution to terrorism in general.

"I think this moment does represent closure to some degree, but there is so much more in the war on terror, in stopping al Qaeda, in protecting our nation's borders, that I feel as though this is definitely a certain step, but it's certainly not the end."

Ewan McGregor Recalls Pressure To Sing On 'Moulin Rouge At 10'

On Monday (May 2), MTV News paid homage to the 10-year anniversary of Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge" with help from the film's stars, including Ewan McGregor. The actor recalled how exciting it was to work with Luhrmann and leading lady Nicole Kidman. McGregor also remembered that there was lots of excitement for the project — even before he signed on.

"There was a real buzz about it. Everyone knew about 'Moulin Rouge' before I met with Baz," McGregor said during "Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event."

"He asked to meet me to do a kind of workshop and I had done the same thing with Baz before when he was casting for 'Romeo + Juliet.' He remembered my audition for that."

Hollywood insiders weren't the only ones excited for the project: pop-music fanatics and musical movie-lovers also caught the buzz. With Luhrmann planning spectacular numbers that used beloved pop songs, McGregor knew he had to step up his singing game for the part. McGregor plays Christian, a writer who falls (tragically) in love with a Moulin Rouge performer after moving to Paris during what's called the Bohemian Revolution in the film.

"I had never sung like I was expected to sing for 'Moulin Rouge,' where the singing was a part of the storytelling and not just part of the character. I've only ever sung as a character, if you like, before, where if my singing wasn't very good, it didn't matter," he explained. He added about the music, "It had to be on a certain level. ... We certainly did a lot of singing training.

"I think I like the tango," he said about his favorite number, which takes place as Christian and Satine (Kidman) are caught in a love triangle with the Duke, who helps fund the musical the Moulin Rouge cast is staging. The song uses the Police's 80s classic "Roxanne."

"There's something really desperate and fantastic about the tango. And I'll never forget walking down through the rows of dancers really upset and singing. That was fantastic."

So, would McGregor sign on to work with Kidman and Luhrmann again? "I'd love to," he said. "I'm really up for that."

West Coast producer DJ Khalil may be hard at work on Dr. Dre's Detox, but in between crafting tracks with the Good Doctor, he is working on landing beats on another highly anticipated album: Drake's Take Care.

"With Drake, I'm working on music for him because I know that he's working on his album. So I keep in touch with 40 from his camp; we always talk, and I know Boi-1Da," Khalil told MTV News. "So I'm just in the lab, just tryin' to cook up stuff for him and just tryin' to hopefully come up with another great record, because he's just an incredible artist."

Khalil is already on tap to work with a number of rap superstars. Besides Dre, he has garnered a spot on Eminem and Royce Da 5'9" 's upcoming Bad Meets Evil project and is laying down tracks for Game's forthcoming R.E.D. Album.

Even with all that work, collaborating with the Young Money spitter appeals to the California-based boardsman. "Drake, to me, he's a lyricist, he understands songs," the producer said of Drizzy's appeal. "He can really write, he's an incredible writer. He has a great sense of melody. He just knows how to make great records."

Drake and Khalil's last collaboration, "Fear," appeared on the 2009 retail version of So Far Gone, but the producer didn't get a chance to land any of his work on Drake's official debut, Thank Me Later. With Take Care looking likely for a 2011 release, Khalil hopes to recapture some of that magic.

"We did a track two years ago called 'Fear' off of So Far Gone, and it's like one of his favorite songs — he told me himself," Khalil said. "I didn't get a chance to make his last album, so hopefully on this one, we'll get in the lab and knock it out."

Danny Al Hassan, 21, didn't learn about Osama bin Laden's death from a news website or television broadcast. He found out on Facebook.

"I checked my Facebook, and I noticed that all these Osama bin Laden statuses are up, and so that's how I figured it out," said Hassan, a senior at New York University.

He wasn't the only one. Many people took to Twitter, Facebook and other social-media platforms to express their thoughts on Bin Laden's death. Twitter, especially, saw a spike in activity, with the site announcing this morning that it saw the "highest sustained rate of tweets ever" during Sunday night's breaking news.

"There was a huge reaction, at least social-media-wise, definitely," said Lauren Pikman, a junior at NYU.

While Pikman learned about Bin Laden's death from watching the news, she said she signed on to Facebook promptly after to post a reaction. "I wanted to Facebook immediately, and I saw that at the same time, probably like 10 of my friends already posted statuses and changed statuses and changed their profile pictures," she said.

While Facebook has not yet made a statement about changes in user activity following the news of Bin Laden's death, the site did see a jump in visits to Facebook pages for U.S. Navy, the SEALs and U.S. Army, according to Wired. The photo-sharing site Instagram also saw an increase in activity Sunday night, with The New York Times reporting that the company saw a 35 percent jump in user photo uploads for a Sunday evening.

New York University sophomore Alan Abbott said he thinks people turned to social media because it allowed for instant reactions.

"It makes it easier for us to see everybody's opinion right away," he said. "That's why we wanted to go on social media and see the status feed, because we knew that that was going to be the place where people were going to be commenting exactly on what they were thinking."

The 2011 Bamboozle Festival went down over the weekend and featured both established and flourishing hip-hop acts, from Lil Wayne to Wiz Khalifa. Another flourishing MC on the bill who's still getting his feet wet but packs plenty of great expectations was Diggy Simmons.

Diggy inked a recording deal with Atlantic Records last year and plans to release his first official single this month. MTV News caught up with the 16-year-old rap prodigy and son of Rev Run after his set to squeeze some info out of him about his upcoming debut album.

"I can't really say any detail on it yet," Diggy told us at Bamboozle. "But premeditating, I wanna keep it humble but it's gonna do damage to the summer, that's what I'mma say."

The teenaged MC was hush about the title of the lead single, adding that, "We're still thinking about the name of the album." The "Run's House" star did share that during the summer months, he plans to put the finishing touches on his debut, which he says is 70 to 80 percent done. He'll also be hitting the road as part of the Scream Tour starting July 13.

Diggy expressed pleasure at how his fans have been reacting at shows and to the music he's been releasing.

"People they say when they're down, they can relate to it," he said. "It'll lift their spirits up or they can just have fun with it. They just love it and that's what I love because it comes from my heart. I don't talk about nothing I don't do, man. I don't talk about nothing that's not real. I talk about my life, so the fact that they really connect with it and love it, it makes my life, man."

Fans got to see Diggy's development as an artist, learning he could rhyme, on MTV's "Run's House," to watching him become a top hip-hop prospect with a cover spot on XXL magazine's 2011 Freshmen issue. "As I get older, I got more to talk about," Diggy explained. "As I evolved, just the wordplay, the content, everything, I just keep getting better and better song-wise, format-wise. The album, it's nothing compared to the mixtapes and what I have out now. It's at a different level."

Of his Bamboozle performance, Diggy said, "It's a blessing that people really mess with me," and he to keep rocking stages and winning over more fans along the way.

"The crowd, I just really had them and they were open to me as soon as I walked on the stage. That type of stuff, it doesn't even get my head big and gas me, it humbles me, 'cause I'm like, 'Wow.' It just makes me feel good that people mess with me like that."

Mixtape: Juice

Real Spit: Soulja Boy's got the juice now. At least, according to his latest mixtape, he does. and used it to fuel Juice, his DJ Scream and DJ Swamp Izzo-helmed project. Inspired by Shakur's 1992 film of the same name, Soulja says he's simply feeding the people.

"This mixtape is called Juice. I'm giving the people what they want, giving the people what they need," he told Mixtape Daily.

While the tape's cover is a recreation of the original "Juice" movie poster — with SB posing as 'Pac — the tape's first single and title track, is no throwback. Kinetic synths, buoyant 808s and slow-prodding drums drive "Juice," as Soulja delivers a repetitive hook that screams 2011.

Following suit is the bright and airy "That Right," featuring Diamond. On the track, SB and his new love interest both rap Auto-Tuned bars, bragging about their cash and all of the trappings that the rap game brings. In fact, SB's bank account comes up quite often on the tape. "Shawty Got Racks" is another ode to cash, while "Money Gang Anthem" borrows Wiz Khalifa and Lex Luger's "Taylor Gang" instrumental. "Racks" is an SB take on YC's latest single, and "Rich Hoe," featuring Lil B, continues the trend.

With an accompanying "Juice" film on the way from Soulja's camp, the rapper aims to take the entire theme and brand it just as he did with his Crank That dance and swag trend. "I already killed the people with the Swag movement," he said. "We finna turn it into the Juice movement."

Joints to Check For

» "Juice" - "This the single to set the tone for the whole mixtape for the streets and where we goin' with it this summer and that's what it is," SB said.

» "Zan & Lean" - "I just wanted to give people some promo of the tape right before we dropped it. [Wanted] to give a preview of a song. Turn it up when you hear it, 'We Juice. Let's go!"

» "That Right." - "Produced by my man, new artist Cash; SODMG. It's featuring Diamond, another ATL rapper. Y'all gotta check this out. This right here is goin' hard."

Newly signed CTE artist Freddie Gibbs wasted no time collaborating with his label boss Young Jeezy. The song, "Stripes," set to premiere on radio on Tuesday (May 3), features the Gary, Indiana, native and the Snowman over a synth-heavy, hard-as-nails track.

"We definitely talkin' about the same gangsta topics, but I think that day we were bumpin' some Run-DMC so we got into that stripe mode," Gibbs said about the track, which was inspired by the popular 1980s rap group.

The record was produced by Lodi, a beatmaker from Memphis who Jeezy has recently took under his wing. "He one of the coldest in the game right now and he's doin' a lot of work with CTE and we're ready to get it in," Gibbs said after wrapping up his set at the Bamboozle Festival this past Sunday.

Fans can expect this Jeezy/Gibbs collaboration to be the first of many, as Freddie told us that the ATL trap star can help elevate his already-growing buzz.

"The main thing, really, was my admiration I had for Jeezy and the respect I had for him," Gibbs told MTV News. "It definitely wasn't about the money or any of that. I looked at what he does musically and what I do musically and I thought that he could take it to the next level."

As for which major label will distribute Gibbs' upcoming C.T.E. project, Freddie wouldn't reveal, but did say that it wouldn't necessarily be Def Jam--Young Jeezy's current label home. "Nah we got options. We got an ace in the hole with that one though. We got a lot more room to grow doin' it this way," he said. "We got an A-bomb about to drop on that end."

Violent J says group was excited to perform at Bamboozle Festival.
By James Montgomery

Insane Clown Posse
Photo: MTV News

Within Insane Clown Posse's Juggalo fanbase, there is a small but increasingly vocal minority who insist their bludgeoning, beloved duo are inching closer to the mainstream with each passing month, thanks to the media attention they've garnered and the wall-to-wall coverage of their every move by publications including The New York Times and Wired magazine, to name just a few.

Not surprisingly, those same fans were none-too-happy when ICP were announced as performers at the Bamboozle Festival, alongside multi-platinum acts like Lil Wayne and Bruno Mars. To them, it was just the latest -- and perhaps most egregious -- example of the group's move toward the majority.

But according to ICP themselves, nothing could be further from the truth. They're still the same group they've been for nearly 20 years, and they agreed to play Bamboozle because, well, why not?

'We got the offer to play here, and we were like, 'Man, we haven't done something like this in a long time,' so we said, 'Let's do it,' ' Violent J told MTV News backstage at the festival. 'Just being offered to come here and play the same festival as Lil Wayne and Mötley Crüe and everybody, that's dope to us. .. We don't want to do it every weekend, but it's probably been 10 years since we did anything like this, so we wanted to do it.

'We just wanted to poke our head up from the underground, see what's going on with the mainstream. The fact that they asked us to come out here, we don't get those offers every day,' he continued. 'They said, 'Bring you like you are.' They didn't say, Come here with no Faygo or Come here without the cussing. They said, Come do what you do, and we're like, Hell yeah, we'd love to.'

And, yes, J admitted he's heard complaints from some of their die-hard fans, but he's mostly laughing them off. After all, none of them have heard ICP's upcoming album, The Mighty Death Pop!, which he called 'the very best music we've ever done.' And, he added that no matter how many people are paying attention, Insane Clown Posse will always make music for their fans first and foremost. Mostly because those fans won't let them slip.

'We've evolved, because in the eyes of our fans, we keep it moving, we keep it exciting, and we keep it new,' J said. 'We keep dropping those bombs that are keeping their attention. We're not just living off the past or something. We're keeping it sizzling; we're keeping it hot, man. We're keeping hot coals on the fire. We're not going off of what used to be there, we're keeping that sh-- cracking, man.'

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — Lil Wayne stood tall this weekend. While major acts from Mötley Crüe to 30 Seconds to Mars and Wiz Khalifa all rocked the 2011 Bamboozle festival in the Meadowlands parking lot, it was Weezy who capped off the party with his Sunday set, which went on for a little over an hour.

With the sun completely set on a brisk 53-degree Jersey night, Wayne took the stage, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue fitted cap, and spit his verse to Drake's "I'm Going In." Tunechi fired up his band as he went on to thrill the crowd of thousands with his I Am Not a Human Being cut "Bill Gates" and Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now," before launching into a rock-tinged version of "A Milli." The crowd remained in full support throughout, shouting song lyrics on each of Wayne's cues, rapping "OK, you're a goon, but what's a goon to a goblin," as DJ 45 dropped out the beat.

While some expected a star-studded guest list, the Young Money boss proved that he needed no help, though he did invite Mack Maine onstage for "Got Money" and "Every Girl in the World." Birdman also emerged from backstage to do his 2009 hit "Money to Blow." There was no Nicki and no Drake, but Wayne made sure to rep for his YM soldiers, rocking Drizzy's "Miss Me" and "Forever."

In the past, Bamboozle has catered more to the punk and rock crowd. And though 2011 featured more hip-hop acts than ever before, Wayne gave a nod to the festival's history and dusted off tracks from his rock project Rebirth, jamming "Prom Queen" and "Drop the World."

Still, it is Weezy's upcoming album that seems to have his fans most excited these days. So when the DJ began to play Harry Belafonte's "Banana Boat," transforming the song into Tha Carter IV's first single, "6 Foot, 7 Foot," the crowd embraced the set-closing song with open arms.

As fans bounced toward the exits, it was clear, on a weekend that showcased over 100 acts on nine different stages, it was Lil Wayne who stood as number one.

Osama Bin Laden's Death A 'Poignant Moment For America,' Students Say

New York and Pennsylvania student journalists tell MTV News where they were when Obama addressed the nation.
By Gil Kaufman

Every generation has signature moments that will never be forgotten. For the current crop of students at New York University, the killing of al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden by U.S. special forces presented a bookmark to the first event that shaped their lives, the September 11 terror attacks.

"I think that 50 years from now, I will remember that I was in the NYU newsroom when that news broke," Katie Thompson, 19, deputy managing editor of the Washington Square News, said about where she was when she saw President Obama announce that the terror leader had been killed.

"When I was listening to President Obama's speech, I personally teared up a little bit. I think it was a very poignant moment for America. We've had this baggage of 9/11 for so long. This is a big step forward for us in the war on terror. This will be a seminal moment in American history following those attacks and President Obama's election."

As soon as President Obama finished addressing the nation Sunday night, Massachusetts native Thompson knew she would have to rip up the front page she had planned for Monday morning and hit the streets to get reaction. She first went to New York's Union Square around midnight, where she found a split reaction to the news, and then to Ground Zero, where there was also some joy mixed with trepidation.

"We found from the students we talked to at both locations that there was a bit of a mixed reaction," the journalism major said. "There were a lot of students who were ... I would say jubilant was the overall mood at Ground Zero. There was a lot of American pride, people chanting ... people who thought that Osama bin Laden deserved to die for what he did and happy that America had finally taken care of him."

But there were also students who were concerned that the types of celebrations that were taking place at Ground Zero and the celebratory mood were not appropriate and might perpetuate the cycle of violence. "That taking the life of this one man didn't necessarily make up for the lives that were lost in the wars in the Middle East and the September 11 attacks," she said of the response. "Especially for NYU students who know people who were affected or have loved ones who were either wounded or passed away in the attacks that us killing bin Laden is never going to bring those loved ones back. And that was a big concern for some students."

The excitement at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia was similar, but with finals looming, it provided not just an excellent reason to take a study break, but a major tension reliever for a campus that goes into virtual hibernation when the end of studies approach.

Lauren Plotnick, 20, executive editor of The Daily Pennsylvanian, happened to be in the paper's offices on Sunday night studying when a friend told her about a Twitter alert in advance of the president's speech. Though the paper has ceased its print edition for the year already, the enormity of the moment quickly dawned on Plotnick and she scrambled to coordinate coverage.

"People are deep in finals and it's difficult to get them covering stuff when we're no longer publishing a print edition," said Plotnick, an econ major from Maryland. She sent out an email to the entire staff and asked to them to start gathering student reaction and send in whatever they got: videos, interviews or tweets.

"The social-media presence just ignited," she said. "We were using Twitter and Facebook to fan out the preliminary reactions ... people were saying how exciting it was for America and how exciting it was they were finding out more through social media than through television."

Even with finals looming, Plotnick said work stopped at the on-campus libraries, students gathered around televisions and laptops and started cheering, and for a little while, it seemed as if everyone in every house and public gathering spot stopped what they were doing to watch the news unfolding.

"On this campus, to see everyone reacting in such an excited way was really remarkable for us," she said. "It really unified the campus and got everyone excited." While she called it one of the most thrilling moments she can remember in her 20 years, she noted that one student who was interviewed said their father is an architect working on the plans for the Freedom Tower in New York and they were scared about him going to work on Monday.

Similarly, living and studying just a few subway stops from Ground Zero in New York, Thompson said a number of students expressed fear of retaliation and concern the city might be a target again. But, in the scheme of news she's covered and experienced in her life, Thompson put Sunday night's events up there with the night of Obama's inauguration as one of the seminal news moments for this generation. She also described how everything in the paper's newsroom stopped the moment it was announced that the president would address the nation.

"We all just gathered around a laptop. ... We didn't know what he was going to address the nation about, and then the news started leaking. ... We knew our whole front page was going to be scrapped and this was that moment," she said.

Plotnick said many of the students who offered their responses also called this one of those moments in life where you will always remember where you were. "For me, it has a whole other dimension. The idea of being in the newsroom and working for a newspaper when events like this occur and having the responsibility to the student body ... it's so special and it transcends time," she said, noting the paper's 126-year history of covering everything from WWI and WWII to the Kennedy assassination and 9/11. "It was really exciting to be in the newsroom and be part of that experience. It felt like a continuation of the role of newspapers and of modern media."

If the hypeman of a seminal hip-hop group offers you a ride — pass. Flavor Flav (born William Jonathan Drayton Jr.) was arrested over the weekend in Las Vegas and released after being stopped in his car for a traffic violation.

According to TMZ, Las Vegas police pulled over the rapper/ reality star at 10:57 p.m. on Friday night. After the Sin City cops ran Flav's name through their system, they discovered he had four outstanding warrants. MTV News confirmed that all of Flav's warrants originated in the Las Vegas area. The outstanding warrants were for parking violations, driving without a license and driving without insurance.

Flav isn't the only rapper to get in trouble with authorities over unpaid parking tickets in recent weeks. Dipset capo Jim Jones was in New York Criminal County Court last week because of his previous arrest for driving with a suspended license.

As for Flav, besides trouble with authorities, one of his business ventures has also hit a snag. Flavor Flav's Fried Chicken in Clinton, Iowa, closed its doors after being open for only four months.

Nick Cimino, Flav's partner in the restaurant, has called the rapper a fraud, saying the "Flavor of Love" reality star didn't contribute much to the business. On the other side, Flav cited shoddy business practices and workers not getting paid as some of the reasons why he chose to withdraw support from the Iowa chicken joint. "I had a licensing agreement with Nick Cimino, and that's all we had," Flav told TMZ. "It was his business to run from there and the business was not run right."

Flav is set to open a new restaurant called Flavor Flav's House of Flavor this month, ironically, at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in ... Las Vegas.

Osama Bin Laden's Death Gives 'Hope,' 'Relief' To Young New Yorkers

NEW YORK — As the world reacted to the news that Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. military operatives in Abbottabad, Pakistan, many gathered near Ground Zero to celebrate and reflect. Nearly 10 years after the attack on the World Trade Center, young New Yorkers and tourists looked back on how the last decade and the actions of Bin Laden have drastically changed their world views.

"I'm very proud to be standing here right now," Kristen, who was a sophomore in high school when the 9/11 attacks took place, told MTV News. "I'd love to give a shout out to my cousin who is a troop and he is a ranger in the Army. His name is David, he's on his fourth tour in Afghanistan, and he's awesome. And I'm very proud of him, and I'm very proud of all our troops."

Elise, who works in the area near Ground Zero, said that the news left her conflicted. "Well, initially, personally, I approached it with skepticism," she said. "But you know, after hearing the details, I'm just proud. After Obama's speech, I was just proud to be an American. And I'm supporting our troops 100 percent. There's so much support out here. Of course we're cautious about retaliation, but those affected by September 11 can finally get some closure and some justice, so I'm definitely proud to be an American today.

Elise said the tragedy of 9/11 "dramatically" affected her generation. "The memorial, just seeing Ground Zero restored — how can we ever forget? I know I was a freshman in high school, and I was definitely affected, although no one I was close to was victimized but I was still affected, I was still traumatized."

Victoria, who also works downtown, anticipated a sense of relief in the neighborhood. "I think the mood would be relief and joy and happiness that we finally have accomplished something very big," she said. "And Osama dying ... that's awesome. ... I remember 10 years ago, when this all went down, and I was home on Cape Cod listening to all of this on the news. And growing up with all of it and now being in New York, it's definitely going to affect my generation and how we view the United States. I think positivity will definitely rise in our nation, a lot of hope."

Financial District resident Devin mirrored Elise's sentiments. "I'm here to feel the sense of relief the next day," he said. "Last night was very much bringing everyone together. It was a night of celebration, and I definitely felt the love. ... Ten years ago, this was a totally different scene. So it went from tragedy 10 years ago to a scene of love, so in that time, there was a lot of suffering and last night and today was our day to let it all out.

"This generation and the generation that was younger [during the 9/11 attacks], it definitely shows them you can say a lot about the country, but we come together in times of suffering and times of celebration," he added. "It shows a lot of hope for the younger generation."

"Moulin Rouge" wasn't just about the music; it was also about the fashion. Costume designer Catherine Martin took home the Oscar when the film premiered, thanks to taking turn-of-the-century styles and updating them for a brand-new century. Nicole Kidman dazzled in a bevy of corsets, feathers and sequins.

"When 'Moulin Rouge' came out 10 years ago, the entire fashion world was on the edge of their seat waiting to see the looks that were going to appear in the movie," celebrity stylist Robert Verdi recalled. "Fifteen years prior, we hadn't seen those shape-changing looks that women really love. We had gone away from it. The '90s were kind of bleak and austere and dark, and here comes 'Moulin Rouge' and restores our faith in fantasy and in fashion."

Fashion PR maven Kelly Cutrone had a similar recollection of the film's fashion, which had fans trying to re-create those bombshell looks. "It was one of the first films in a really long time to actually invade and take over the fashion industry," she said. "We went from kind of asymmetrical oversized clothing to everybody's wearing corsets. ... It was great for all the corsets designers."

For more on the film, check out MTV News' special "Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event," which looks at the influence of the film on all things pop culture, including fashion.

MTV News will reunite director Baz Luhrmann and Ewan McGregor, today at 3 p.m. ET on MTV.com. The director and actor will be joined by co-star John Leguizamo, who played artist Toulouse-Lautrec, and Martin, who won the Oscar not only for costume design and but also for art direction. Hosted by MTV News' Josh Horowitz, the live stream will include special appearances and live interviews while looking back at how the film came to be and how its legacy continues to grow.

Producer Bangladesh has been in high demand lately. With "6 Foot, 7 Foot" — Lil Wayne's lead single off Tha Carter IV — climbing up the rap charts, Bang has been tapped by Kanye West and Jay-Z to contribute to their upcoming Watch the Throne project.

In an exclusive interview with MTV News last week, the producer confirmed that he was in Paris working with the duo.

"I was requested to come out there and just give a little insight on the album and give them a beat or two and add and create with 'Ye, which was a big honor," he said. "I been a fan of 'Ye since the first song he ever dropped."

Bangladesh wouldn't go into much detail. In fact, he doesn't even know if the duo will end up using the tracks he submitted for the album.

"It's never a guarantee until that time comes, but the track I left [Kanye] with, he was very satisfied with," he said. "He really expressed that he loved the beat and he's ready to buy it. That's a good sign, but you never know at the end of the day. I don't really talk about stuff until it's signed, sealed and delivered."

In addition to trying to land a track on the high-profile project, Bangladesh got to listen to the tracks Hov and Yeezy recorded. "Sh-- is dope!" he exclaimed. "You know what they do. It's not gonna be nothing less of what y'all expect them to do. It's actually on another level."

As of now, there is no release date for Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne, but a track called "Lift Off" featuring Beyoncé and Bruno Mars is rumored to be the next single.

Stay tuned to MTV News for more details on Watch the Throne as they develop.

Fans eager to hear new music from Dr. Dre can thank boxers Manny Pacquiao and "Sugar" Shane Mosley. The latest single from the good doctor's ridiculously delayed Detox album, "Die Hard" featuring Eminem, will premiere on Friday's episode of "Fight Camp 360°: Pacquiao vs. Mosley" on Showtime.

The impending debut of the third official single from Dr. Dre's third album was announced at the conclusion of last week's episode of Showtime's four-part documentary series. The show goes behind the scenes of the preparation for the welterweight championship bout between Pacquiao and Mosley on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Miami rapper Rick Ross tweeted that he will be accompanying Pacquiao to the ring on fight night.

As for "Die Hard," it is the second of Detox's three official singles to feature Dre's protégé Eminem, who appeared on "I Need a Doctor." Dre and Eminem have also teamed with Chrysler to endorse the Detroit automaker's vehicles.

Eminem first starred in a commercial spot for the Chrysler 200 that debuted during this year's Super Bowl. More recently, Dr. Dre was recruited to appear in new ads for the Chrysler 300 — the 300S version will include a Beats by Dre audio system — set to start airing in May.

In other news, Eminem will be formally teaming with a protégé of his own, of sorts, in Royce Da 5'9". The two Motor City lyricists — who at one time were feuding but are now on good terms — will release an EP under the moniker Bad Meets Evil in June via Shady Records.

In January, Em signed the supergroup Slaughterhouse, featuring Royce, Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden and Crooked I, to his Shady imprint, which is distributed by Interscope Records.

As for the Aftermath/Interscope album Detox, there is still no release date.

Why 'Fast Five' Dominates Box Office A Decade After Franchise Debut

Posted: 01 May 2011 10:50 PM PDT

Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, IMAX tickets and a dearth of action flicks helped it race to the top.
By Eric Ditzian

As observers of both Hollywood and United States national security have noted, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been enjoying a pretty incredible last few days. He apparently learned about Osama bin Laden's death hours before the rest of us and hinted about the news on Twitter ("Just got word that will shock the world," he wrote). Monday is his 39th birthday. Oh, and his new action flick, "Fast Five," opened to $83.6 million in ticket sales — not the biggest debut of the year but Universal's largest opening since "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" in 1997.

As remarkable as Johnson's national security sources are, perhaps even more impressive is how well "Fast Five" performed at the box office a decade after "The Fast and the Furious" first hit the multiplex. Franchises tend to max out their public good will after two or three installments, but with this new picture, there can be little doubt that the "Fast and Furious" series has joined the likes of "Die Hard" in the pop-culture establishment. Much of the credit goes to Vin Diesel, industry insiders point out.

"Like Sly Stallone as Rambo, Bruce Willis as John McClane and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, Diesel embodies the role of Dom Toretto, fusing his public persona with his fictional character, and in doing so making him an action icon," said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. "Simply put, in the pantheon of action studs, Diesel is now immortalized as Dom."

But even one iconic character can't fully explain such a mega-debut. After all, the latest "Rambo" opened to just $18.2 million in 2008, while "Live Free or Die Hard" grossed $33.4 million in 2007. Universal reinvigorated the "Fast and Furious" franchise in 2009 by bringing back not only Diesel but Paul Walker, leading to a $71 million opening (then an April record). "Fast Five," in turn, became something of a franchise all-star flick, not only with those two guys but with faces from previous installments, like Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris, plus the introduction of an action stalwart like the Rock.

What's more, box-office experts also noted a wide-open market place for a high-energy blockbuster in a year thus far largely devoid of them. "2011 got off to a very slow start, and that caused a lot of 'people aren't going to the movies anymore' talk," said Phil Contrino, editor of BoxOffice.com. "That's nonsense. Moviegoers were just hungry for reliable entertainment, and that's exactly what they got with 'Fast Five.' A movie like this needs to be seen in theaters. It doesn't deliver the same rush in your living room."

The result, Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru pointed out, was a PG-13 film that averaged $22,950 in 3,644 theaters, "including a record 243 IMAX sites where tickets cost as much as $19 each." That translated to an impressive 54 percent market share over the weekend.

Next weekend, the summer movie season officially kicks off with the debut of "Thor." The question for that superhero flick is how its debut will be affected by "Fast Five." Contrino notes that even though "Fast Five" will inevitably see a steep drop-off in ticket sales, "it'll still eat into a portion of 'Thor' 's business."

Or, as Bock put it, " 'Fast Five' already stole 'Thor' 's thunder." He added, "It's going to have a very difficult time matching the debut of 'Fast Five.' Dom has already dropped the hammer on the summer box office."

Check out everything we've got on "Fast Five."

Travie McCoy Says Gym Class Heroes Revisting 'Rawness'

Band begins production on The Papercut Chronicles II.

By now, you're probably aware that Gym Class Heroes are heading into the home stretch on their long-awaited The Papercut Chronicles II album (and if you're not, here's Travie McCoy talking about it in December 2009 and again in March 2011), but you might be wondering just why, after pushing boundaries with 2008's The Quilt, the band is headed back to their beginnings this time out.

Well, as McCoy explained to MTV News during this past weekend's Bamboozle Festival, they're doing it not to reconnect with fans who might have been mystified by the hip-hop leanings on The Quilt or to score another radio hit a la "Cupid's Chokehold," but to rediscover the reasons they started the band in the first place.

"I think I can speak for the rest of the fellas: We kinda wanted to revisit the innocence and the rawness that The Papercut Chronicles had," McCoy said. "They say you have your entire life to write your first album, and a lot of those songs were written when we were 16, 17 years old, so there's definitely this sense of innocence and urgency almost that we don't necessarily want to recreate, but revisit, and see where that takes us musically.

"For me, I went back and listened to the record for, like, a month straight, listening to some of the patterns that I was doing and just some of the crazy stuff. Because back then, I had no idea about song structure, we weren't thinking about being on the radio or being on television," he continued. "So, like I said, it's that innocence and that naivety, and within that, is just something that we wanted to kind of recapture and put on this record. Just us not being concerned with our songs being three-and-a-half minutes long, or not being concerned with our verses being 16 bars, you know?"

McCoy added that GCH will officially begin production on PCC II on Monday (May 2) and hope to have the album in stores "by late summer." And even though you might think the band is no longer his top priority — what with the success of his solo album, Lazarus — McCoy said nothing could be further from the truth.

"A lot of people think I took a break from Gym Class to do Lazarus, but even before it was finished, we were already starting pre-production on Papercut Chronicles II. So this entire time I've been out promoting and touring, I've also been pulling double duty, working on the Gym Class record, so there hasn't really been a break," he said. "We've been knocking out pre-production; we have close to 30 demos, and now it's time to lay all the puzzle pieces out on the floor and pick out the ones that'll make out the album."

What do you hope The Papercut Chronicles II sounds like? Tell us below!
