It wasn't too long ago that Paramore were everyone's favorite new artist, but, thanks to the breakthrough success of 2007's Riot! and their continued maturation on last year's Brand New Eyes, they've become one of the most popular rock acts on the planet — the kind of band that's actually in the position to help up-and-coming groups.

So, to kick off MTV News' Rock Week — during which we'll be looking forward to some of the biggest albums and giving some shine to the brightest new stars of 2010 — we decided to ask Paramore's Hayley Williams to name some of her favorite new artists. After all, she knows what it's like to go from hotly tipped to surefire success just as well as anyone. From Motor City punk to hometown indie (with a little San Fran hardcore thrown in for good measure), here are her picks to click in 2010.

The Swellers — "These guys are new to our label, Fueled by Ramen. They crashed on my living-room floor once and, unknowingly to me, slapped one of their bumper stickers on my infamous car. I've loved them ever since, particularly their song 'Sleeper.' A bit of trivia: They are the only band that FBR signed in 2009. That's 'cause they rule."

Fireworks — "Met these guys with some friends at a show they played in Nashville in early 2008. We all ended up hanging out till 6 or so in the morning. We do, in fact, have a side project called 'Tomahawk Beat.' ... There are no songs or anything. It's actually more like an elite club. P.S. The video for their song 'Detroit' is up on mtvU.com so go check 'em out!"

Now, Now Every Children — "I met these folks on 4th of July last summer. We spent our Independence Day storming the Mall of America, test-tasting cheese samples and buying socks. I really like their song 'Everyone You Know.' FYI: Now, Now are the first female band we ever brought out on the road with us. But sadly, when it comes to the open road, girls will always be outnumbered by nasty, stinky boys."

Paper Route — "We shot our video for 'That's What You Get' at the Paper Route house! They're from Nashville too. Apparently, on our last tour together, a couple of the guys were arrested in Germany for pushing over a road sign? Or something? Sounds absolutely frightening. Well, they make good music — check out 'Gutter' — but I never said you could trust them."

Set Your Goals — "My old roomie Hannah had this hoodie that she sponge-stamped the words 'SET YOUR GOALS' onto and wore just about every day in high school. It wasn't until I was on the Warped Tour a couple years later that I ran up to these dudes and introduced myself. By this point, we've toured the country together, explored haunted venues, had some Buffalo Wild Wings and hung out in Hamburg, Germany, of all places. Their new album, This Will Be the Death of Us, is out now and slays me. I got to sing on one of the tracks, 'The Few That Remain,' too. I'm pretty lucky."

It's Rock Week at MTV News, and to celebrate, we're taking a look at some of the most-anticipated new albums of 2010. Stay tuned all week for more!

As the crisis in Haiti continues in the wake of Tuesday's devastating 7.0 earthquake, George Clooney and Wyclef Jean are getting set to stage a global telethon to rally support and raise money to help the embattled country. On the red carpet of the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night (January 17), Clooney revealed how the MTV Networks-sponsored benefit came together.

"You guys started it," the actor said. "The first call I made was to Judy [McGrath, MTV Networks' chief executive]. She said, 'Yes, everybody will do it, everybody's in' and that they were thinking of doing it too. They got the ball rolling and we got every single network after that. So congratulations to you!"

In the days since the telethon was first announced, Wyclef Jean and CNN's Anderson Cooper have joined in as hosts; they will broadcast from New York and Haiti, respectively, while Clooney will be in Los Angeles. The show will air commercial-free across ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, BET, the CW, HBO, MTV, VH1 and CMT on Friday, January 22, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. All donations will directly benefit Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF and Wyclef's Yele Haiti Foundation. Facebook and MySpace have signed on as official social-media partners to help steer viewers to the telethon and drive donations.

Elsewhere on the red carpet, Clooney told The Associated Press that Bono, Sting, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys will perform at the telethon; at press time, an official lineup had not been confirmed.

Before the telethon airs, Clooney wanted to remind young people that there are many ways to help the people of Haiti.

"I would say, 'Get involved, whatever you do,' " the Oscar-winner said. "This is about compassion. There are times in our lives when people are really without help and in real danger, and this is one of those times. So whatever they can do — give money to one of the organizations that they like the best."

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive
Call the goodfellas the Mob Squad. Jay-Z, Young Jeezy and Trey Songz are getting ready to start the next leg of the BP3 tour and have adopted a nickname.

"The way Jay explained it to me, he wanted to give people the best show possible," Songz told Mixtape Daily Thursday. "They could have easily done it by themselves and it'd be great. But [Jay] wanted to give the best show. All of us bring a separate aspect to the table, making it a great show all the way. I'm there for the ladies, of course. Then I bring an R&B soul vibe and my hip-hop. Jeezy got the streets. And Hov is Hov.

"You gotta be there because it's action-packed from the jump," the singer added.

As big a venture as the trio will have onstage, they just might be doing it big offstage as well. Songz said they may do at least one record together.

"It's definitely all in the talks," Trigger Trey admitted. "It's the Mob Squad. Me, Jay, Jeezy, we plan on working together while we on this tour because the energy we have together when we get around each other is amazing. And like I said, all aspects like that on a record is amazing. Maybe while we out on the road we get it done."

Songz will definitely be working on his new mixtape and putting it out soon.

"I been in the studio. The first thing I did when I got back in the studio was the Rihanna 'Hard' [remix]. I explain how I go hard. As far as music is concerned, the grind is concerned, as far as women are concerned, I go hard. Then I went in and got four or five great records. That's actually four or five original records. I definitely want to release a mixtape to show people that [the skills] ain't went nowhere."

The telethon will be hosted by Clooney in Los Angeles, Jean in New York and Cooper in Haiti. All donations will directly benefit Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF and Wyclef's Yele Haiti Foundation.

"Hope for Haiti" will feature performances and celebrity appearances to be announced in the coming days, as well as live news reports from CNN. "Hope for Haiti" will also be made available to MTV Networks International and CNN International.

Facebook and MySpace have signed on as official social-media partners to help steer viewers to the telethon and drive donations.

"This is apocalypse," Jean said about the destruction in his home country. "We spent the day picking up dead bodies, all day that's what we did. There's so much bodies in the streets that the morgues are filled up, the cemeteries are filled up."

Olivia Wilde, Meryl Streep, Others To Auction Globes Gowns To Benefit Haiti

As the champagne flowed and the diamonds sparkled inside the Beverly Hilton at the Golden Globes on Sunday night (January 17), celebrities still managed to keep a focus on the crisis unfolding in Haiti. Everyone from Meryl Streep to Drew Barrymore to Jason Reitman touched on the tragedy during their acceptance speeches.

Streep and many of her fellow Hollywooders, in fact, are using the event as a way to raise money for Haitian relief efforts, as "House" star Olivia Wilde told MTV News on the Globes red carpet.

"We're not only here for 'House' and doing this for ourselves, but we are here for Haiti," she said.

Wilde and her colleagues — including Streep, Josh Brolin, Gerard Butler, Amy Poehler and Jenna Fischer — are auctioning off their Globe outfits for an organization called Artists for Peace and Justice, with all proceeds going to help the people of Haiti. One hundred percent of the proceeds with go directly toward the relief effort.

"It's a really cool thing and hopefully we can turn all this fashion coverage into something positive," said Wilde, who wore a Gucci gown.

The 25-year-old actress traveled to Haiti in December to help build a school, which, according to Us Weekly, was destroyed in the earthquake. As Wilde and the rest of Hollywood gear up to drive donations toward the embattled island nation — including MTV Networks' George Clooney-led telethon set to air on multiple networks and cable channels on Friday (January 22) — the "House" doc also emphasized that young people can pitch in to help, staging everything from bake sales to barbecues to raise much-needed funds.

"Young people can get together and come up with incredible ideas," she said. "Right now they need cash more than anything."

In an appearance as varied as one of her song medleys, on Friday's (January 15) "Oprah Winfrey Show," Lady Gaga performed, announced that she'll be donating the proceeds from one of her forthcoming concerts to relief for Haiti, and indirectly addressed her show cancellations in the wake of her collapse from exhaustion after a show on Thursday.

Regarding Haiti, Gaga said that all proceeds from her January 24 concert in New York will go to relief organizations for the earthquake in the embattled country.

"Haiti's still suffering," she said. "And I was thinking earlier, because I was in New York during 9/11 and I always felt, the level of disaster isn't in the neighborhood of what is happening in Haiti, but I just remember feeling nobody really understood. And I worry that young people don't know enough about what's going on there.

"And I will say today that on the 24th, the Monster Ball [show] in New York City, all of the money that I make in ticket sales and merchandise will go to Haiti. And on the 24th you can also go onto LadyGaga.com and any merchandise that you buy, the money will go to Haiti." Reached for comment, Gaga's label rep told MTV News the specifics of the contribution would be announced in the coming days. (Learn more about what you can do to help with earthquake-relief efforts in Haiti.)

Although the concerts she postponed or canceled on Friday due to exhaustion didn't come up directly in conversation, Gaga did admit, "I always have very trying weeks in terms of my physical schedule."

For Gaga's performance, she stepped onto the stage with a ball and chain and spiky getup — complete with a spiked hairstyle — that was part dress, part pantsuit and busted out a medley that started off with "Monster" before going into her hit "Bad Romance," complete with several dancers. She later took the ball and chain, jumped on a mock taxi and attempted to break through its windshield. (Oprah was shown pumping her fist in the crowd during the performance.) She then slowed it down by completing the set at her piano singing "Speechless."

Also appearing on the show was "Avatar" director James Cameron, and Gaga revealed that she had always wanted to paint herself blue, like the Na'vi in the film. "It's actually funny about James Cameron, because I've been talking about how I want to paint myself blue for a performance for the longest time," she explained. "I've been preparing to do it and then 'Avatar' came out."

In the interview with Winfrey, the singer addressed her long-simmering stardom aspirations. "I don't like that, actually. It feels so weird when people call me 'lady,' " she said about her stage name, adding, "I wake up in the morning and I get on my computer and I have files and reference boards and I call the Haus of Gaga all day and argue with them. For me it's all about being provocative. It's not just about getting attention, but about really saying something that affects people.

"The hardest part about my job is that I'm bossy, really. This is my only opportunity to live my dream."

Gaga also gave Winfrey's cameras a peek at the inner workings of her Monster Ball Tour, showing her wardrobe closet and her office. She added that before her team hits the stage they have a very specific pre-show ritual. "We always at the end of the prayer say 'Joanne' altogether because that was my father's sister, who died very young, and I believe she's onstage every night."

On the Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday night (January 17), much of the talk was about usual awards-show fare — but of course there was also much said about the disastrous earthquake in Haiti and what people can do to help. George Clooney, who has teamed up with MTV Networks for the "Hope for Haiti" telethon this Friday night, discussed his work on the telethon, all donations from which will directly benefit Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF and Wyclef's Yele Haiti foundation.

"We're going to have a lot of great musicians — we're putting them together as we speak, and then we'll be able to release the songs on iTunes the next day, so that they'll be a continuing ability to make money for several of the charities," he told E! News' Ryan Seacrest about the telethon. Performers and more details will be announced in the coming days.

"We do [such charity events] when there's an immediate need," he continued. "It's happened a few times: 9/11 we did it, and [after the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia] we did it. [Hurricane] Katrina, some people did a telethon. It's a way and a good time to focus a lot of attention when ... this is a very difficult time for people to be giving, so it just shows how compassionate people are."

MTV Networks' "Hope for Haiti" is a global telethon set to air commercial-free across ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, BET, the CW, HBO, MTV, VH1 and CMT on Friday, January 22, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The telethon will be hosted by Clooney in Los Angeles, Wyclef Jean in New York and CNN's Anderson Cooper in Haiti.
