Two tapes in one day, Dram? OK — watch what we do this year. Cam'ron's and Yo Gotti's tapes came out Monday and Banks' joint is still bubbling in our office. But as we move forward with this already strong 2010 campaign, we gotta look back at '09 real quick. Drake checks in and accepts his honor for having our top tape from last year, So Far Gone.

"So Far Gone being named the Mixtape of the Year means a lot to me," Drake said in Toronto. "It was a risk we all took as a team to put out a mixtape that I'm exploring so many different genres of music — from the Santigolds to the Lykke Lis to Peter Bjorn and Johns, to even myself going from rapping to doing records that sound like old Jodeci songs. It was a mix of all the things that make up my character, and for people to embrace it the way they did and for MTV to name it the top mixtape of 2009 means the world to me."

For the first time ever, Drake goes in-depth about some of his and everyone else's favorite tracks on the tape.

Joints He Checked For

» "Uptown" (featuring Lil Wayne and Bun B). "It was one of the later records," Drake explained. "That was when I felt like the mixtape was moving a little too slow and it needed some energy. It gave me another chance to really just rap. I love to rap and say witty, clever things that people can say in the club. I like to give people that opportunity. When I heard the beat, I came up with this saying, 'It's OK, it's OK, it's OK.' And at the time I wasn't home, so I was like, 'You can run and tell my city I'm on.' It became this chant. Initially that wasn't even the hook. Wayne had the hook that was part of his verse. That's why it's called 'Uptown.' He was like, 'I'm so uptown.' Then we took that out and made the hook [heard on the mixtape]. Bun getting on there was exciting. Produced by Boi-1da — I thought it was the one. That record means a lot for me."

» "Unstoppable" (featuring Lil Wayne and Santigold). "Me and Oliver were into the Santigold record. 'Starstruck' was one of my favorite records. And 'Unstoppable,' the beat, it needed to be rapped on by somebody. I always try to do something with Wayne. Everyone has heard Wayne spit, but when Wayne's put in an awkward situation, he goes off and shines in that atmosphere. So I had given him the beat, and at first he probably heard it and was like, 'This is weird.' A month later, I got this verse in my e-mail back. I did my verse and we found a way to edit it together — 40 did his surgery. It became a record that moved. On the So Far Gone Tour it was my favorite record to perform.

» "A Night Off" (featuring Lloyd). " 'A Night Off' is my favorite song on the mixtape. It came from just ... the song right before it is 'Ignant Sh--' with Wayne. It was such an exhausting song, rap-wise. We rapped for so long, it was so much to digest. I was like, 'Man, after you hear that song, it would be so ill to just go into a slow jam.' At the time it was some girl probably had hit me up like, 'You never have any time. All I need is for you to take a night off.' I saw that written on my phone. I was like, 'A night off. That's a crazy concept.' Especially for anybody that works. You could be doing [any job] — to take a night off for somebody means the world. It was sexy and it made women feel special. That's what I like to do. Lloyd with his higher voice showcased two types of tones. I love that song and girls really like it, which is the best thing in the world."

» "Bria's Interlude" (featuring Omarion). "I was smitten over this girl from L.A. and I started writing a song about her. A lot of the R&B [I do] is really based off women that come into my life and inspire me to speak to them in song and say what I never would expose on just a talking level."

Ke$ha: The Partying Pop Genius We've All Been Waiting For

The 'Tik Tok' singer is completely of this moment, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Here's the thing about Ke$ha, the 22-year-old pop confectionery/ cautionary tale who very well might have the #1 album in the country by the time you read this: She is probably a genius, even if she doesn't know it just yet.

Some of this has to do with her music, a rattling mélange of high (and very low) art, heavily indebted to vocal effects and guys in "tight-ass leather pants," and her image, part Topanga Canyon bohemian, part Upper West Side socialite, all pulled off in an effortless manner that, really, truly requires a lot of effort. But, really, all those things are merely the work of Dr. Luke and a really overzealous team of stylists. What truly makes Ke$ha a genius is her very existence. She represents everything we've been clamoring for — or everything we've been afraid of — in pop music: an unrepentant party monster, an effortless assimilator of the past four decades of music and, perhaps most of all, a completely, utterly immediate star.

No pop act has ever represented the zeitgeist quite like she has. She is completely of this moment. She makes no bones about any of this. Everything about her career has been carefully crafted for the now.

Her hit single "Tik Tok" — which, truth be told, is pretty terrific — is an unapologetic ode to getting totally wasted, one that manages to bridge the gaps between white-girl rapping, rock-star posturing and Euro-trash electro and throw in a line about wanting to make it with Mick Jagger too. Most pop stars would realize the inherent silliness of the whole thing, or try to play it off as some bit of biting social commentary. But not Ke$ha. In the brief conversation I had with her about the song — which took place on a red carpet, so she might have been a bit tired of answering the same four questions over and over again — she played it up as a big, biographical thing: a snapshot of a typical day in her very atypical life. She really did wake up most mornings feeling like P. Diddy, and if I opened her medicine cabinet, I most certainly would find a bottle of Jack in there. And in every performance or interview I've seen since, she's kept it up — high art be damned, let's get hammered.

At first, it sort of made me mad. I wished she'd just get down to the business of making really brainy, deeply personal pop. But then I heard the rest of her debut album, Animal, and it began to make sense. Ke$ha isn't trying to be Kelly Clarkson or Lily Allen (or even Britney Spears). I'm going out on a limb and saying that "a lengthy career" might not be at the top of her agenda. She just wants it all, and she wants it now. And really, what's wrong with that?

Listening to Animal is sort of like being trapped inside an endless Hollywood Hills house party, if the DJ were only playing ringtones and the kegs were filled with Auto-Tune. There are songs called "Take It Off" and "Party at a Rich Dude's House" and "Hung Over." The whole thing is coated in a buzzing, electronic lacquer, courtesy of Dr. Luke. Ke$ha's untreated voice is heard maybe three times through the entire album. I mean all that in the best possible way, of course. This is very much a 2010 pop album, one that you could put in a time capsule and unearth in 100 years, to show your great-grandchildren how Mimi and Pop-Pop used to get down back in the early 'aughts. They probably wouldn't believe you otherwise.

Some have singled out "Boots & Boys" as a sort of feminist anthem, mostly because Ke$ha flips the sexual standards of popular music and objectifies men, bragging about collecting "cowboy boots and cowboy boys." I have no problem with that (mostly because it's probably correct), and really, perhaps Ke$ha is the most empowering artist on the planet. But I'd wager she'd disagree with that entire assessment. It flies in the face of everything she stands for, because it's a message and she's got no time for any of that. There's a beautiful simplicity to her. She's said it all, she puts it all out there. Not because she fears judgment, but because she doesn't care.

What can she do for a second act? Really, what more can she say? How else can she shock? And why would she want to? She's got a #1 single and a (probable) #1 album, which means she's had her cake and ate it too. Ke$ha wins, without really trying, and without really aspiring to much of anything. It's sort of genius, if you think about it. Like the old saying goes, "F--- art, let's dance."

Simon Cowell's Greatest 'American Idol' Put-Downs

Posted: 12 Jan 2010 02:05 AM PST

Before his final season kicks off, we've compiled the judge's wittiest slams.
By James Montgomery

Over the past eight seasons of "American Idol," Simon Cowell has been an endless fount of witticisms, put-downs and downright bizarre metaphors (to ginger-haired troubadour John Stevens, in season three: "You and Latin music go together like chocolate ice cream and an onion"). He's crushed dreams, broken egos and — in at least one instance that we can remember — suggested a contestant get a job hooking down on the docks.

Needless to say, we've enjoyed every minute of it. Charming, delightfully cheeky, alarmingly spiteful but always honest in his assessments, Cowell was the gift that just kept on giving. Now, as he embarks on his ninth — and, sadly, last — season behind the judges' table, we decided it was time to say, "Thanks for the memories." So we've compiled a list of his finest "Idol" moments: his meanest critiques, his most nonsensical assessments and his most hilarious put-downs.

And, to be honest, we're sure there are a few amazing moments we've forgotten, so let us know any we've missed in the comments below. On with the acrimony!

To season-three semifinalist Ashley Thomas: "What that reminded me of when I was sitting here was, like, instead of being on the stage of 'American Idol,' you're at a local rodeo, you've just been crowned the prom queen, and it was like the song before you lasso a bull. I'm being serious."

To season-six wannabe Kenneth Swale: "You look a little odd, your dancing is terrible, the singing was horrendous, and you look like one of those creatures hat live in the jungle with the massive eyes. What are they called? Bush babies."

To season-six semifinalist Haley Scarnato: "Can I tell you the problem? Do you know what I said to Paula halfway through the song? I don't know your name."

To season-five semifinalist Bobby Bennett: "If you hear a scream from a hotel room in Las Vegas, that's where Barry Manilow's watching this show. ... Horror films entertain me. You know, it's a different kind of entertainment."

To season-seven auditioner Ashley Lawing: "I'm going to steal your dog."

To season-four contestant Constantine Maroulis: "It would be rather like ordering a guard dog for your home and getting delivered a poodle in a leather jacket. It's not the real thing."

To season-six auditioner Jennifer Chapton: "Why don't you get a job down in the port?"

Check out the video for even more classic Simon slams, and if we missed any, let us know below, or upload a video to Your.MTV.com!

Adam Lambert's 'Whataya Want From Me' Video: Watch A Sneak Peek!

'American Idol' star's full video premieres Friday on MTV and VH1!
By James Montgomery

With all the leather and glitter and controversial awards-show performances, it's sometimes easy to overlook the human side of "American Idol" star Adam Lambert.

He gets sad. He feels lonely. He is insecure. And all of those things are on display in the video for his new single, "Whataya Want From Me" (from his For Your Entertainment LP), which premieres on MTV and VH1 Friday. For proof, we offer you this sneak peek.

In the clip, we see Lambert stripped of his trappings, wandering around a sparse (yet tastefully minimal) apartment. There are no outlandish costumes, no creative eyeliner applications — just a guy feeling very much like an island unto himself, which is something Lambert probably feels from time to time. It's no secret that it's pretty lonely at the top.

Which is why he looks so utterly honest when he sings the chorus of the song: He's literally asking the listener what they want from him. He's begging to know how much more he is expected to give. Lambert is a man who takes pride in being true to himself, yet, as the song — and video — seem to imply, being the center of that kind of attention is a double-edged sword, and comes with a big downside. If he edits himself, one portion of his fanbase will chastise him. If he goes all out, he draws the ire of the FCC. So, really, what does everyone want from him?

It's a pretty deep question — one we'll no doubt find the answer to when the "Whataya Want From Me" video premiers on Friday.

Now that we've gotten to know more about this year's female and male Pop Week rookies, it's time to see what the more established celebs will be up to in 2010. What will female MVPs like Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Kristen Stewart be doing to pass the time in the coming 12 months? MTV News investigates.

Katy Perry
Age: 25

Hails From: Santa Barbara, California

In 2009: Perry hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards, shared the stage with future fiancé Russell Brand at the VMAs and performed at the Grammy Awards. She also was nominated for another Grammy and collaborated with 3OH!3 on their song "Starstrukk."

What She's Up to in 2010: She just got engaged to Brand and is currently in the studio working on her new album. She's already hooked up with Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo for the album, which she promises will be different from One of the Boys. On January 27, Perry will appear as a guest judge on "American Idol," and on January 31, we'll see if she can collect on that Grammy.

Choice Quote: "I'm doing my record as 'Lovefool' by the Cardigans and Ace of Base," Perry said of her upcoming album. "I want to make songs that people want to hold hands and roller skate to."

Kristen Stewart
Age: 19

Hails From: Los Angeles

In 2009: She ruled the box office with "New Moon" and dominated gossip blogs, thanks to all the rumors about her relationship with co-star Robert Pattinson. She had everyone talking about her look and her personal life and she insisted that fans, and the media, should focus more on her work than her persona.

Why She'll Be Huge in 2010: As if releasing "Twilight Saga: Eclipse" in June isn't enough to have everyone excited, she's in two more buzzed-about flicks: She'll reteam with Dakota Fanning for the rock biopic "The Runaways," and she's going to get edgier playing a stripper in "Welcome to the Rileys."

Choice Quote: "I'm, like, vibrating," Stewart said about her turn as the legendary Joan Jett in "The Runaways." "I'm just so excited about that movie."

Miley Cyrus
Age: 17

Hails From: Nashville

In 2009: She released the EP Time of Our Lives and took over the airwaves with her hit "Party in the U.S.A." She also quit Twitter, was a hit at the box office with "Hannah Montana: The Movie," went on a successful tour and had everyone talking about her relationship with ex Nick Jonas and her controversial performance at the Teen Choice Awards.

What She's Up to in 2010: She announced she'll be ending "Hannah Montana" after season four, but with a year left in the series, fans shouldn't expect her to go anywhere on the small screen. She's set to release her more mature flick, "The Last Song," in which she plays rebellious teen Veronica Miller, in April. She'll also make a cameo in the sequel to the "Sex and the City" movie this spring. Plus, she's hard at work on some new music, which she says will be very different from her signature pop sound.

Choice Quote: "I changed a lot when I was in Tybee Island [Georgia, filming 'Last Song']. I feel like art really does imitate life," she said. "So just showing this movie, I feel like I'm really showing a part of my growth as a person as well. So I'm really excited for people to see it, just because of what it means to me, personally."

Nick Jonas 'Anxious' About Fans' Response To Solo Album

'I'm feeling the vamp-up,' he says.
By Jocelyn Vena

Nick Jonas

Nick Jonas is used to recording and releasing music with his brothers, but this time he's going at it on his own. His solo album, Who I Am, with his side project the Administration, will hit stores February 2 and Nick insisted he isn't going to worry about how it fares on the charts — he's more concerned with how the fans will respond.

"I'm feeling it ... I'm feeling the vamp-up," he told MTV News backstage at his recent show at the Beacon Theatre in New York. "It's exciting. It's just hard to believe it's all happening. I'm thankful to everyone who made it possible."

So is Jonas feeling the pre-album jitters? Nervous about how the fans will feel about his first album without his brothers by his side? Well, not at the moment, but ask him again closer to February 2. "Not so much nervous," he said. "I think once we get closer I might be anxious to see what the response is, but so far it's been good and that's encouraging."

While he's used to his albums hitting the top of the charts, he isn't expecting that to automatically happen with this effort — it's really just about the music. "I think you always think about it, but with this project it's different," he explained. "I don't have any expectations going into it. I just know I made a record that I'm proud of and hopefully people that buy it listen to it with open ears and open minds and enjoy what they hear."

Lloyd Banks Released From Jail, Detained By Immigration

G-Unit member Lloyd Banks and three associates, who were jailed after allegedly assaulting and robbing a concert promoter in Canada, were released on bail Tuesday (January 12), but Banks and associate Nicklas Sloane were remanded by Canadian immigration.

According to Olaf Heinzel, a spokesperson for the Kitchener (Ontario) Police, the two were held for unspecified immigration issues; a Canadian immigration spokesperson told MTV News that details about Banks' (real name: Christopher Lloyd) and Sloan's detention were not available at press time. A review is scheduled for later this week, after which the two could be released and allowed to return to the U.S.

Shawn McGee and Tyrell Cooper, who were also jailed in connection with the incident, are expected to return to the United States later Tuesday.

All four men were arrested just after 5 a.m. on Saturday at a hotel in Kitchener. According to authorities, Banks and his associates assaulted and robbed a local show promoter/ booking agent in his hotel room early Saturday in a dispute over pay for a concert appearance. The four were charged with criminal confinement, robbery and aggravated assault. Although police have not named the alleged victim, Banks' lawyer, Patrick Ducharme, told MTV News that he is veteran booking agent Chris Hines.

"The case probably will proceed on the basis that it will be put over for three to four weeks for me to receive what is called the 'prosecutors disclosure.' That's all the information that supposedly supports the charges," Ducharme, who expects to enter a not-guilty plea on Banks' behalf in approximately month, told MTV News late Monday. "Then three to four weeks after I've had the chance to review that disclosure, I would be prepared to set the date for the trial or preliminary hearing, depending on some procedural matters. The case will proceed through the courts. If it stays in the lower courts, it takes about a year and a few months to resolve. If it goes to the higher courts, it could be as along as a year and a half to bring the matter to court."

At press time, Ducharme and the case's prosecutor had not responded to MTV News' requests for further comment.

'American Idol' Guest Judges Are An 'Eye-Opener,' Randy Jackson Says

Posted: 12 Jan 2010 01:27 AM PST

'They actually know how to critique,' he says of Mary J. Blige, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne and other celeb judges.
By Katie Byrne

Back in August, long before Simon Cowell's departure was the big story surrounding the "American Idol" judges' panel, Paula Abdul announced her exit from the show. The move left producers scrambling to fill her seat for the soon-to-tape auditions, and they rounded up an impressive roster of guest judges for the job.

With season nine set to start Tuesday night (January 12), we'll get our first glimpse of the celeb judges in action, with Victoria Beckham kicking things off at the Boston tryouts. Randy Jackson was impressed with Posh Spice, even giving her a new moniker.

"I gave her the nickname 'Lady V,' " he laughed. "So hopefully she goes out into the world and uses that. ... People know of her fame from the Spice Girls — they probably know more of it as being Mrs. David Beckham — but [the guest judges] are all performers in their own right that have achieved high acclaim and massive success in the entertainment field."

Those judges also include Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne and Joe Jonas, all of whom brought something different to the table, Jackson said.

"If you sat down and you watched Katy or you watched Avril or any of these people we had as guest judges, you realize that their success is based on that they actually know what they're doing," he said. "They actually know how to critique, because, in order to make it to any of these levels where Katy or Avril, for instance, have made it, you gotta be able to critique yourself first so you're able to improve. I think it's just an eye-opener. People take for granted that, 'Yeah, well, they just had a hit song. Whatever. What do they know?' But they actually really know what they're doing. It wasn't an eye-opener for me, but I think for a lot of people watching, they're gonna realize, 'Wow, they really do know what they're doing.' "

One judge the auditioners really stepped up their game for was Mary J. Blige, Jackson recalled.

"Mary is a serious, stand-in-your-shoes performer," he said. "She is not a performer that is gonna use a lot of props to make you enjoy the show more; you're really gonna enjoy her voice. I was just driving in the car the other day, and her version of [U2's] 'One' with Bono came on the radio. You're not seeing different weird outfits or weird dance moves; it's not about that. She's this stand-in-the-shoes kind of singer. I think a lot of kids that came in know that, and they were like, 'Whoa, this is Mary J.! We gotta show and prove now.' It was a good thing for these kids to step up and rev up to."

Shania Twain, Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris will also appear as guest judges until the audition episodes wrap up February 3.

The Unveiling Part 2: Lil Wayne's 'The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 2' DVD

Lil Wayne is always so focused and serious about his work in the vocal booth — it's amazing to watch, if you are ever lucky enough to be able to witness him putting the tracks together. It's not the stern face you get — Wayne smiles and laughs, because he's enjoying himself and he loves what he does.

"Hold on, man, hold on, man," Wayne says to his engineer after cracking up in a Miami studio. It's 7 a.m. and while most everyone is asleep, Wayne is in the booth composing lines as the beat plays. His goal is to rap 60 bars straight — no hook — over N.O.R.E.'s classic Swizz Beatz-produced track for "Banned From TV," for last year's No Ceilings mixtape. While in the booth, a line that came into his head is bold and crass and causes Weezy to chuckle.

"I'm a beast, I'm a pit bull, I get my ass kissed." In this exclusive clip from DJ Scoob Doo's "The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 2," you see Wayne putting the rhymes together. Even though he has fun, he also makes sure that the rap is perfect before he leaves.

"Wayne is my favorite rapper of the new age," Noreaga told us Monday. "Although in rap years, he's just as old as me. But that's my favorite rapper for the new age. For him to not only do the joint, but it appear on Mixtape Daily video ... that's an honor. My kids love Lil Wayne. Do 'Super Thug' next, Wayne — keep my legacy alive. ... I'm trying to do Special Ed's 'I Got It Made' and a few other classics over. It's only to give respect to the people. If Wayne is a real MC like I know he is, he was doing it to show love and respect to the joint and what it meant to him. I'm speechless."

"That dude is the epitome of workaholic," Scoob Doo said about Wayne. "He doesn't even sit down in the studio. He could be in the studio for nine hours and he's not even sitting down. Everybody is nodding off, sleeping on the couch 'cause it's a $3 million studio, and he decides not to sit down. That gives you an idea where his mental is at."

"The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 2" is in stores on January 22, but you can purchase it now on DJ Scoob Doo's Web site.

Despite a nasty snowstorm that slowed their progress, the Summit on the Summit team made it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro on Tuesday (January 12), completing a six-day, 50-mile trek aimed at raising awareness about clean water.

"Even with as many grandiose illusions that I have had, this has gone beyond my wildest dreams and expectations," said trip leader Kenna in a statement about the ascent to the peak of the tallest mountain in Africa, on which he was joined by a crew that included actors Emile Hirsch, Jessica Biel and Isabel Lucas, musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, and a group of eminent scientists and activists. "The influencers, educators, staff, crew, and publicists have literally braved this on behalf of the world and, in a personally meaningful way, on behalf of my father."

The journey will be chronicled in a 90-minute documentary slated to air on March 14 at 9 p.m. on MTV.

Kenna, who unsuccessfully attempted to reach the 19,340-foot peak of the mountain five years ago, was overjoyed that every one of the trekkers on the trip made the difficult ascent, which was chronicled with video, tweets and photos on the Summit on the Summit Web site. The climb is intended to raise awareness about bringing desperately needed clean water to developing nations around the globe.

The final climb was arduous and left the participants exhausted, but thrilled about their achievement. "The last 48 hours have been the most intense and physically grueling experience of my life. miraculously we all made it to the top together," said Hirsch. "To have such a complete success for such a worthwhile cause — the global clean water crisis — more than reaching the summit is what is really satisfying."

After telling MTV News on Monday that he had struggled at times with keeping himself fueled up with enough food and water on the trip, Lupe Fiasco added, "The thrill of conquering your fears especially in such a physically and mentally taxing environment can't really be done justice in words."

The push to the top took seven hours. Despite battling weather conditions that included high winds, snow, sleet, rain and hail — as well as fatigue, altitude sickness, dizziness and headaches over the course of the nearly week-long climb — the team reached the peak on Tuesday night without incident; climbers striving for the peak have a success rate around 75 percent. With little time to celebrate, the group began a six-hour descent soon after summiting, walking their way down to 12,000 feet, where they will set up camp for their final night on the mountain.

"I also can't be more thankful for all the people that followed us, donated and have fought the global clean water crisis with us," added Kenna.

Check back with MTV News for more updates from Kenna and his team, and tune in to "Summit on the Summit" on March 14 at 9 p.m. on MTV.
