Paula Abdul Will Be Back In 'A Huge Way,' Randy Jackson Promises

'American Idol' judge says Paula-free panel is 'gonna take a little getting used to.'

Since Paula Abdul left "American Idol" back in August, fans have been speculating what her next move might be. Some are still clinging to the idea that she'll make a triumphant return to "Idol" (highly unlikely, since the ninth season kicks off next week), while others are hoping rumors about a job on Simon Cowell's U.S. version of "X Factor" are true.

What does Randy Jackson want for his former colleague? Well, he doesn't know where Abdul will end up, but he's pretty confident she'll land on her feet.

"I know that she's gonna be back in something in a huge way, because she's mad talented," he said when asked Friday (January 8) about the "X Factor" reports. "The thing that I always say about this genre or about anything on the music/entertainment side is, 'Expect the unexpected.' You never know."

Jackson's main concern with all the Paula talk is that viewers might forget what "American Idol" is all about: the singers.

"In terms of the show, I'm sure it's pretty much a distraction, because people get a little sidetracked with that," he said about rumors swirling around the judges. "I mean, there are contestants. 'Wait a minute, this is a singing competition!' [Laughs.] Not to belittle what we do, because I think the show is completely about the four of us judges and Ryan and the contestants, but let's also focus on what we're judging and what the actual more meat of the show really is: It's about finding that next superstar talent."

New judge Ellen DeGeneres is now helping Jackson and company track down that superstar talent, which has made for some surreal moments on the post-Paula panel.

"The whole thing started with me, Ryan, Simon and [Paula]," Jackson said. "She was one of our best friends, and she still is. I miss that. We look down the table and go, 'Wait a minute, where's Paula?' And I expect to hear something from my left ear, and I go, 'Wait a minute, that doesn't sound like Paula!' [Laughs.] It's gonna take a little getting used to. We're really sad about that. But, you know, welcoming Ellen to the fold is a good look."

The ninth season of "Idol" kicks off Tuesday at 8 p.m.

By now, you may have given up trying to follow the bouncing ball that is Lil Wayne's Rebirth album. The disc has had more than a half dozen release dates and while the latest, February 2, seemed pretty solid, it remains unclear if that is just the latest placeholder until the next one rolls around.

A report earlier this week claimed that the disc had been pushed once again to June 22, based on an alleged post on Walmart's Web site announcing the new date that was quickly taken down, if it had ever been posted at all. But a spokesperson for Wayne's label, Cash Money Records, told MTV News, "Wayne's album is still on schedule for Feb 2nd." A spokesperson for Cash Money distributor Universal Records, however, has not responded to repeated requests for confirmation on the release date of the album.

If the February release holds, the rock-inspired Rebirth will hit shelves just a week before Wayne reports for his one-year sentence on gun charges.

It's also unknown if the version of Rebirth due out next month will be the same as the one that was accidentally shipped last month to 500 Amazon.com customers who had pre-ordered the album (based on its early December release). The disc has since leaked in its entirety online, leading to speculation that Cash Money will rework the official version before it hits stores: Young Money President Mack Maine tweeted last month that "leaked 09 Rebirth isn't going to be 2010 Rebirth." The album's track list has apparently changed, perhaps considerably, since Wayne told MTV News back in June that it was ready to go.

In the meantime, Wayne continues to push ahead with Rebirth's promotion, premiering the over-the-top video for the album's "On Fire" on MTV earlier this week.

Brittany Murphy's mom and husband desperately tried to revive the actress the morning she died, according to a 911 call released Friday (January 8) to The Associated Press.

"My daughter's passed out," Sharon Murphy tells the 911 operator, who proceeds to relay CPR instructions to the distraught mom. Brittany Murphy's husband, Simon Monjack, can be heard in the background trying to revive the actress and following Sharon's instructions via the dispatcher.

During the eight-minute call, Sharon is heard wailing and screaming, "Brittany, please come back!" She told the operator that Murphy had been ill earlier and had vomited.

An initial autopsy was performed on Murphy in Los Angeles on December 21, the day after she was found unconscious in her Hollywood Hills home and later pronounced dead at the hospital. In an e-mail to MTV News, representatives for the Los Angeles County Coroner's office disclosed the initial results.

"The Los Angeles County Department of Coroner conducted an autopsy on the body of Brittany Anne Murphy-Monjack, age 32, on December 21, 2009," the statement reads. "The cause of death has been DEFERRED pending the receipt of additional toxicological tests and tissue studies that have been ordered by the deputy medical examiner.

"There will be no final ruling as to the cause and manner of death until all of the requested test results have been received and reviewed in context with the autopsy findings. It is anticipated that this process may take approximately 4 to 6 weeks or more. Anatomical findings show no evidence of trauma to the body."

As initial reports suggested, foul play is not suspected in her death. Murphy's family laid the actress to rest Christmas Eve.

'Hannah Montana' To End After Fourth Season

Season four of Miley Cyrus' hit Disney series, "Hannah Montana," will be the show's last. Rumors of the show's curtain call have been swirling for about a year now, and on Friday (January 8), a rep for Disney confirmed the upcoming finale to MTV News.

"You never know in this business ... but right now, we're scheduled to wrap after shooting this new batch of episodes," Disney Channel Worldwide programming exec Adam Bonnett said in a statement. "The [new] episodes will continue to roll out at least over a full year."

Production on the fourth season of the show, which debuted on the Disney Channel in 2006, will begin January 18 and continue throughout the summer, with breaks scheduled around Cyrus promoting her film "The Last Song" in April. The season is set to kick off in the spring, according to Bonnett.

The season-three finale, called "Is Miley Saying Goodbye?," is set to air as a one-hour special in mid-March, setting up the story line for the fourth season. Bonnett said it will be "a big one-hour event where we find out what Miley Stewart's decision is going to be."

In season four, Cyrus' character, Miley Stewart, will struggle with her dual lives as a pop star and as a regular girl. It's a similar situation to the one her character faced in the 2009 flick "Hannah Montana: The Movie." "It's one of the things she's been wrestling with for months — whether it's time to make a decision to continue being Hannah Montana or just be a regular, ordinary girl," Bonnett said.

The New York Post reported that Ray Liotta and "Two and a Half Men" teen star Angus T. Jones are set to appear on the show this season. "Ray Liotta will play a role that no one would ever expect him to play in a teen sitcom," Bonnett hinted.

In an interview for the February issue of Harper's Bazaar, Cyrus expressed her interest in seeking out more mature roles and noted that, although she's a role model, she doesn't feel the need to be her fans' parent.

"Everything is so dramatic in the world," she said. "My job is to be a role model, and that's what I want to do, but my job isn't to be a parent. My job isn't to tell your kids how to act or how not to act, because I'm still figuring that out for myself. So to take that away from me is a bit selfish. Your kids are going to make mistakes whether I do or not. That's just life."

Keyshia Cole Confirms Pregnancy, Addresses Family Conflict

Keyshia Cole has caused quite a stir on blogs in the past few months by keeping mum while pictures of her sporting a growing baby bump appeared online.

The singer, however, confirmed on Friday (January 8) both her pregnancy by Cleveland Cavaliers basketball player Daniel Gibson and her upcoming marriage to him in a statement that also included searing remarks about her relationship with her estranged family.

Cole's mother, Frankie Lons, a popular reality-TV star on BET, recently told Atlanta radio station V100 that her daughter was already married and did so to avoid having her child be born out of wedlock. In her statement, the singer announced she no longer is in communication with her mother. Cole appeared with Frankie and her sister Neffe in the series "Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is," which was a candid account of the Oakland, California, native reconnecting with the matriarch of her family.

"To all my friends and fans, it's time that I clear the air," Cole explained. "It's not a secret that I haven't been in contact with my mother Frankie, and my sisters Neffe and Elite and I never wanted to air out our differences to the public. While I won't go into detail here I find it necessary to let you guys know I decided to stop communication with them because I was at a point in my life where I needed serenity and peace to move forward. Please know I love my family very much but it was time to let it go. You guys are a witness to a lot of what was happening from watching on air and online. Now that I am becoming a mom my passion for having a loving and peaceful home for my child is my #1 priority."

Cole didn't directly address her mother's interview in the statement, but she did identify "constant false reports" that are interfering with her life, which includes her attempting to balance planning a wedding, preparing for the birth of her child, and finishing a forthcoming album. Cole characterized the stress as being unhealthy and emphatically said there are "only a few people that can official confirm or deny anything that's happening in my life." That list was limited to herself, Gibson and the singer's publicist, along with fellow singer and close friend Monica — she concluded her statement by saying, "My girl Monica never lies."

Wale Dishes On His New Sex Column: 'I Straight-Shoot On That'

In 2010, there won't be a day when Wale isn't working, he told MTV News. If he's not writing rhymes, he'll be writing his new sex column for Honey magazine.

"I feel that I matter in another sense other than rap," Wale said on the L.A. set of his "Pretty Girls" video. "I have an album out, I'm in all these magazines and TV, but I took time out to write an article as if I was presenting it for a class. I was like, 'Wow, people really love the article.' My mother always told me I was good with words. A lot of the women actually dug it. I was keeping it funky, like 100. I don't do all that lying and all that. I straight-shoot on that. It came out pretty good. I look forward to doing more stuff with Honey mag."

The rapper was asked by a reader to explain the difference between "making love" and "having sex." "The art of making love seems like a pastime, whereas [just having sex] has become this generation's making-out," he wrote. "I think men pursue it a bit more aggressively than women — after clubs, after school, etc. I personally enjoy the occasional quickie but never OD.

"Making love is, simply put, poetry in motion," he continued. " ... Strawberries, champagne, a bubble bath, eye contact, hearing her heart beat while slowly handling business. Making love, in my opinion, is what makes the world go 'round. The toughest dude, the most coldhearted gold-digger, they all have that thing."

"To be politically correct, I was trying to differentiate love from lust," Wale said about the column. "That's what I did. I went into extreme detail about it. That's what rappers do; we do a lot of things in detail. We schooled a couple [people] there."

Wale's columnist duties aren't keeping him from his rhymes. He wants to re-establish himself as an MC.

"I'mma show 'em now," he promised. "I'mma show them that I feel I'm the best, as you should. If you a writer, reporter, model, you should feel you the best. I took a different approach [with Attention Deficit]. I wrote over a bunch of kinda go-go beats. Loop beats. I'mma show 'em. D.C.'s here. We not going nowhere."

For a lot of musicians, performing in front of a packed Apollo Theater crowd is a dream come true. Newcomer Melanie Fiona was able to scratch one more dream off her list after performing there with Alicia Keys on Thursday night.

"I've admired Alicia Keys since before I got into the music industry, just everything she represents as a female artist," said Fiona, who is gearing up to tour North America with her role model. "I feel like us collaborating on a tour is going to be really strong, really empowering and what a great show, so I'm really excited."

The songstress has ridden the success of her single "It Kills Me" to #1 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, a Grammy nomination and now Keys' Freedom Tour this spring, which will make stops around the U.S. and Fiona's native Canada.

Fiona said her achievements thus far have left her overwhelmed. "Forever, I get to say, 'I was a Grammy-nominated artist, and I had a #1 record with Billboard for two weeks,' " she marveled.

"It's a dream come true," Fiona continued. "You hope that you could get to a point as a new artist where you feel like you are with the people you've admired for so long, and you're fitting in with a certain realm or caliber of artist that you admire. I definitely admired Alicia Keys, what she represented as a woman, as an artist and just through her music that has been so successful. I'm now going to be on tour with her, exposed to her audience. The least I could say is, it's a dream come true."

Ellen DeGeneres Brings 'Layperson' View To 'American Idol,' Randy Jackson Says

'She will give the at-home viewer a real voice to be on the judges' panel,' Jackson says of newest judge.

"American Idol" fans barely had time to process Paula Abdul's shocking exit from the show back in August before another surprise came their way: Ellen DeGeneres would be taking her seat on the judges' panel. Viewers had a lot of questions about the move, not the least of which was what qualified the comedian and talk-show host to judge a singing competition.

We caught up with original judge Randy Jackson to see what he thinks of his new colleague, and he insisted that Ellen is the right woman for the job.

"I think her being just a die-hard music fan and loving music [makes her qualified to judge]. And just being a really smart, talented person herself — because she's a performer and entertainer as well, right?" he told reporters in a conference call Friday (January 8). "She knows about performing and entertaining, because this is how she's made her career, and a very amazingly successful, great career."

Jackson stressed that DeGeneres will represent "Idol" viewers on the panel as an ardent music lover: "She'll give that layperson-at-home view. ... She will give the at-home viewer a real voice to be on the judges' panel."

While Jackson and DeGeneres haven't judged together just yet (Hollywood Week doesn't start until next week, and Ellen was hired after auditions were already taped), he's sure she'll bring a new feel to the panel.

"It's definitely going to be a different dynamic, completely different people," he predicted. "Ellen's different than Paula, and she's going to interact with Simon [Cowell] and interact with me and Kara [DioGuardi] very differently."

The biggest difference? "There will be a lot of laughs," Jackson promised of the ninth season, which kicks off Tuesday at 8 p.m. "Welcoming Ellen to the fold is a good look. She's funny, she's charismatic, she's really cool, she's my homegirl from Louisiana, like me. It's going to be a very interesting, funny, different season of 'Idol.' "

Michael Jackson Death Investigation Completed By LAPD

Police will reportedly present case to DA's office within weeks.
By Gil Kaufman

More than six months after pop icon Michael Jackson's passing, the Los Angeles Police Department has reportedly completed its investigation into his death and is preparing to send the case to the district attorney's office within weeks.

TMZ reported that it is looking "all but certain" that Jackson's live-in physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, will be criminally charged with the singer's death. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office had no comment at press time and spokespeople for the LAPD's Robbery and Homicide division could not be reached for comment.

Citing unnamed sources, TMZ reported that detectives completed their investigation in late December and that the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney soon. According to what the site called a "very informed source," the police investigation was "exhaustive" and "extremely thorough," giving the DA's office enough evidence to present a criminal case against Murray. A spokesperson for Murray had no comment at press time, but his lawyer has stated that Murray did nothing that should have caused the pop singer's death.

Though it has not yet officially released the full findings of its investigation, pending the completion of the police probe, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office has ruled Jackson's death a homicide. Murray's lawyers have lashed out against authorities for announcing the homicide ruling without releasing the autopsy findings. The doctor has not spoken publicly since Jackson's June death, but the Murray released a one-minute video in August in which he thanked supporters and said, "I told the truth, and I have faith that truth will prevail."

As part of the investigation, police served search warrants on Murray's offices in Houston and Las Vegas, as well as the doctor's storage unit and home and a Las Vegas pharmacy in search of evidence. Murray told investigators that he administered the surgical anesthetic propofol as well as other tranquilizers to Jackson several times in the hours leading up to the singer's death — Jackson reportedly used propofol to combat chronic insomnia — and the coroner has ruled that the singer died of lethal levels of the drug. While no charges have been filed to date in the death, Murray is reportedly at the center of the LAPD's manslaughter probe.

The case is complicated, TMZ reported, because while propofol is typically administered by a trained physician in a clinical setting in which the patient's vital signs are carefully monitored, Murray did not technically break any laws by hooking Jackson up to an IV drip of the drug in his private Los Angeles home.

No decision has been made yet on what Murray might be charged with, but citing an unnamed source, TMZ said it is likely to be involuntary manslaughter, which requires prosecutors to show that Murray engaged in gross negligence in his actions, but not that he intended to cause harm or death to Jackson.
