The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Despite meager sales of Jealous Ones Still Envy 2, Fat Joe said critics' talk of his career demise is preposterous. Still, Joe feels fueled by the doubt. He has a new LP coming in a few months called The Darkside: Volume 1.

"The people gotta understand: I don't give a f--- right now," Joe said. "It's nothing to be political, nothing to be friends about. My n---as that's with me is the loyal n---as. Bandwagon n---as don't rock with me. Right now, I tried to give y'all the nice guy. I tried to go, 'Hello, Aloha' — they don't want Fat Joe to do that. I'mma have to do something that I'm an expert at; it's called 'kill people.' That's why it's The Darkside: Volume 1. Once you get this one, you ain't gonna never want Fat Joe to do anything else. Just know that this new album right here is about to be the skeleton. We about to change how every n---a do their album now. N---as is gonna have to come hard."

Joe's last LP had club records such as "Celebration" and songs for the ladies like "Put You in the Game" and the aforementioned "Aloha." This time around, all the material is going to be much harsher, even the songs for the clubs.

"I always give quality work," he promised. "I always make hot records for people — that ain't the point. The point is that I need to go back home. I need to go back to doing Don Cartagena, Jealous One's Envy. I need to go back to that blackout zone, that dark side. All this sugarcoated music, they need somebody to just take them in that right direction. Like Khaled said: 'The streets is fed up.'

"How I figure it, you make all that pretty music, and you ain't selling no records anyway," he continued. "You might as well do what your strength is. I come from Diggin' in the Crates, Big L, Big Pun. I come from this hard sh--. I'm not playing with n---as. The mask is off, the gloves is off. We darkin' out, we don't care. We leaving fingerprints at the police scene so they can find it on purpose."

Joe is working with Young Jeezy, Busta Rhymes, DJ Khaled, Cool & Dre, Alchemist, Street Runner and more on the LP. Scott Storch is also set to dish out beats.

"Some people wish, they wish it was over," he laughed. "I got some things that's gonna light up the airwaves. My first single I'm gonna put out, me and Young Jeezy, when Funk Flex hears this, he's gonna play it from 7 at night, till 11 at night. No other songs played on the station, no interruption. The worst thing you can do to Fat Joe is back him in the corner or back him down till he's got no breathing room. He's a warrior. He's a conquistador. He's coming out fighting and swinging harder than ever. ... Fat Joe's walked through fire and the coldest of winters."

Before the interview, Joe was working on following up a freestyle he dropped a couple of weeks ago over Snoop Dogg's "I Wanna Rock" beat. This time, he's taking over the Timbaland track to "Say Something."

"It ain't over till Bobby Brown is sober and I got more M's than Oprah," he raps.

Lady Gaga Brings Her Shocking Style To Consumer Electronics Show

The singer, wearing a see-through dress and wacky hairstyle, thanks her 'monsters' at the event

When word spread that Lady Gaga would be at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Thursday (January 7) to discuss her partnership with Polaroid as the new creative director for a specialty line of products, many wondered: What would the pop star wear? In true Gaga fashion, her outfit definitely stood out.

Gaga's hair was the true centerpiece of the ensemble — which included a see-through black dress and sunglasses — with her blond locks (or a matching hairpiece) styled to resemble a wide-brim straw hat, similar to the oversize hats women wear to the Kentucky Derby.

The singer spoke to the crowd at the CES Polaroid event about why she got involved with the company. "Well, I'm definitely a Polaroid camera girl," she said. "I really believe in the lifestyle and injecting the things that I love into [this]. ... For me, what I'm really excited about is bringing back the artistry and the nature of Polaroid."

Later in the day, with Timbaland by her side, Gaga arrived to help promote the new red version of her Heartbeat headphones. Proceeds will go to Bono's RED campaign. "There will be a red Heartbeat that will also be packaged with an acoustic version of 'Poker Face,' " the singer announced, adding, "We really appreciate you little monsters."

In a statement released earlier about her work with Polaroid, Gaga said, "I am so proud to announce my new partnership with Polaroid as the creative director and inventor of specialty projects. The Haus of Gaga has been developing prototypes in the vein of fashion/technology/photography innovation — blending the iconic history of Polaroid and instant film with the digital era — and we are excited to collaborate on these ventures with the Polaroid brand. Lifestyle, music, art, fashion: I am so excited to extend myself behind the scenes as a designer, and to — as my father puts it — finally have a real job."

Kenna Says First Day Of Kilimanjaro Climb Is 'A Bit Harder Than I Expected'

Singer says Santigold is Summit on the Summit's flashiest hiker, Jessica Biel the most determined.

If you're shivering wherever you are, just be glad you're not doing it while trekking up the highest mountain in Africa. After the first day of hiking on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania as part of the Summit on the Summit project to raise awareness about clean water, singer Kenna called MTV News from his satellite phone on Thursday (January 7). He says conditions at base camp are already more challenging than he ever imagined.

"Everything's great," said Kenna, who attempted and failed to make it to the 19,340-foot summit of "Kili" five years ago this week. "It was a bit harder than I expected. ... The route we took was more difficult, with more rocks. We had to cross a river a few times, and there were more ups and downs than the first time I did it."

And that was just the first two-hour hike of a seven-day, 50-mile journey up the mountain that is part of a campaign to raise awareness about the need for clean water in developing nations around the globe. The climb will be chronicled in a 90-minute documentary slated to air on March 14 at 9 p.m. on MTV. In addition to a number of eminent scientists, Kenna is joined on the trek by actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas and musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold. Along the way, they'll be posting tweets, photos and video blogs about the climb on SummitOnTheSummit.com.

After leaving a village near the base of the mountain at 5:30 on Thursday morning, Justin Wilkes, an executive producer on the documentary project, said the team took a two-hour ride over bumpy dirt roads to a gate near the base, where everyone had to get out and have their packs weighed to make sure they were all under 20 kilograms. "Then we drove up through a tropical rainforest, where it was in the mid-80s, for another two hours and pulled up around a corner, and there was a huge team of porters waiting for us. It was an unbelievable sight. We're in this post-apocalyptic landscape and there are dozens of people standing there."

Wilkes said once they passed through the rainforest the temperatures dropped much lower than the group expected, with daytime highs in the 40s and nighttime lows in the 30s. "There's quite a bit of snow on the mountain," he said. "We spent two hours walking across this mostly flat, rocky, shrubbish plateau, and the mountain was entirely enshrouded in clouds until we got to the base camp. And when we arrived the clouds suddenly parted, and it was like, 'Holy sh--! It's really high!' It looks much higher than anyone expected it to."

All the hikers are carrying personal packs with clothing, water bottles and daily amenities. While everyone did OK on the first day, there were already some issues with altitude sickness, which caused headaches, nausea and dehydration.

The stakes will be raised on Friday, when a six-hour day of trekking will take the group up 4,000-5,000 feet. "As far as the eye can see, it's just an uninhabited nothing," Wilkes said of the area surrounding the mountain. "You might as well be on the moon. One thing we're all conscious of is that there's a lot more snow on the mountain than there has been historically. Usually, it's just on the cap, but almost three-quarters of the mountain is covered in snow, so we're nervous about it getting really cold, really steep and the air getting much thinner."

Kenna said his tent mate, Lupe, is acting like a veteran, even though he's a mountain-climbing rookie. So far, the rapper is holding up just fine, even though he made the first-timer mistake of trying his boots on just one day before the climb began. "He says he's a veteran," Kenna joked. "He went to sleep a lot later than me and trekked as much as I did and drank a lot of water and took some medication [for altitude sickness].

"I think this is a monumental occasion," Kenna continued, speaking over the sounds of his fellow climbers celebrating the end of an exhausting day. "You have people of all different cultures and creeds and histories on a climb of Kilimanjaro representing other people in the world, including people that can't represent themselves. You can go on the site and see the excitement of people trying to do something difficult, who took time and energy and put their hearts into it, knowing full well it's for others."

Offering his high school superlatives for the first day, Kenna gave Santigold the "Best Dressed" award thanks to her spray-painted boots with gold laces. Lupe earned "Most Likely to Go to Bed Early From Fatigue." Hirsch got props for being the funniest, Biel for being the most focused, Lucas "Most Likely to Succeed Mother Nature" due to her love of the outdoors and himself the "Most Likely to Summit and Jump Up and Down and Scream Success After Failing Once" designation.

"When everyone summits, that's the point where we will be able to speak to the world from the top of the world and say, 'This is the global clean-water crisis. If you're not paying attention, it will happen to you.' "

Check back with MTV News for more updates from Kenna and his friends during the climb and tune in to "Summit on the Summit" on March 14 at 9 p.m. on MTV.

Bow Wow Uses Haters' 'Negative Energy' To Fuel New Mixtape

'I have to push it 10 times harder,' he says of proving himself on his new label, Cash Money.

Bow Wow has been making announcements on his Twitter page that his new mixtape, Greenlight 2, did an astounding 2 million downloads in two days. Obviously, it's hard to verify the numbers on various mixtape sites, but nonetheless, Bow's online buzz is huge.

"All the critics who point their finger at me, like, 'They fixed the numbers,' or, 'Aw, man, he's still Lil Bow Wow to me.' I use all that negative energy and I use it in my head like, 'I gotta make these mutha----as eat all this sh-- back,' " Bow said Thursday (January 7) about his drive to put out music. " 'I gotta throw this back in their face.' What other way but to throw out hot-ass records? That's the only way you gonna do that."

Bow recorded his latest mixtape in just two weeks after finishing a new film with Ice Cube called "Lottery Ticket."

"The whole mixtape is different," Bow said, adding that his favorite track is "Dangerous." "It's a conceptual record. I got the idea from watching [the 1989 Eddie Murphy movie] 'Harlem Nights,' watching ole girl Sunshine. I was like, 'This girl is really dangerous if she can make somebody call their wife the next morning and make them say, "It's over. I'm not coming home." ' That's been one of the favorites. As well as the one me and Short [Dog] did over Snoop's 'I Wanna Rock' [beat]."

Being a part of the Cash Money/ Young Money family now (he's officially signed to Cash Money Records, and co-owner Birdman is also his co-manager), Bow knows he can't slack in official releases.

"I tell people one thing about me: Practice makes perfect," he said. "Being signed to Cash Money, you get to see [Lil] Wayne and ... our studios are all right next to each other. Stunna, then my room, then the Wayne room. When you go to the studio, you see the grind. You wanna keep up with what they doing, especially me, 'cause I'm the new guy. I feel like I'm a new artist, 'cause now this is the type of music that I'm about to start making."

Bow said the edgier music we hear on his mixtapes is actually him, not the manicured, cuss-free Bow we've heard most of his career. It was Jermaine Dupri's idea to keep his music clean.

"I have to push it 10 times harder and make people accept it," he said about his evolved music. "My goal is to come with hot sh--. You have no choice but to step it up when you signed to the number-one label. You got [Drake] over there, who I speak to often. I call myself 'The Prince of Hip-Hop.' Drizzy is a newcomer, but he's finnin' to take over the game. You got no choice but to step your sh-- up. So that's basically the approach I took. I been in that studio every single day. That's the Cash Money way. I follow suit and abuse it. If you a rapper and spend time in the studio and go every day, you gonna get better."

The 22 year-old has taken charge of his own career. He's now managing himself, along with the Birdman, and he revealed that before he puts out an official album, he'll release Greenlight 2.5, coming out exclusively on iTunes.

"Stunna and them let me do whatever I wanted to do," he said. "Previously, I dropped two mixtapes with DJ Infamous. That was the beginning of me stepping into the mixtape game. The first one, I did that in my office. F---ed-up microphone, the sound quality wasn't that good. I was gonna quit after that. I was like, 'This sh-- ain't for me.' Then I did the Half Man, Half Dog 2 with Infamous. That got way more downloads. Then when I hooked up with DJ Ill Will to do the Greenlight, the first Greenlight did half a mil overnight. I know if I stayed on this track, then the next couple of joints would be even bigger."

Whether it's her music, image or fashion, Madonna has always been adamant about change and reinvention throughout her career. Her new, yet-untitled album will be no different.

The singer, who is currently hard at work to deliver the follow-up to 2008's Hard Candy, has lined up a series of collaborators, including DJ A-Trak, David Guetta and Fernando Garibay, to help her with a new sound.

"It's my production, turned into song structure — halfway between rap and electronic and whatever else I listen to," DJ A-Trak told British newspaper the Daily Star.

Madonna isn't the only star to work with the DJ recently. A few months ago, A-Trak revealed that he and Kanye West were throwing out several new ideas for his upcoming album. "Kanye's taking a bit of time away from the limelight. But he keeps telling me all these ideas he has for songs and fashion bits," he told the Daily Star in November.

According to the newspaper, Madonna will also infuse some rock into her catalog by working with Pearl Jam producer Brendan O'Brien.

Another collaborator who has scheduled sessions with the Material Girl is David Guetta. When asked who would be his dream collaborator, the French DJ said Madonna remains at the top of his list. "I would love to work with Madonna," he told DigitalSpy.com. "It will probably happen very soon actually. It's all in the early stages and I'm not allowed to speak about it yet!"

Producer Fernando Garibay, who has worked with Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, has also confirmed his involvement with Madonna. When a fan asked Garibay on Twitter when he will work with the Queen of Pop, he tweeted, "Madonna coming soon."

Is Jay Leno Moving Back To 11:30 P.M. Time Slot?

Jay Leno's move to 10 p.m. will be short-lived, according to TMZ.

The site is reporting that "The Jay Leno Show," which currently resides in a 10 p.m. slot on NBC, will be placed on hiatus on February 1 and will return to its original time slot of 11:30 p.m. after the Winter Olympics.

The news comes after several months of declined ratings for Leno and reports of unrest among NBC affiliates, who have complained about the dwindling audience.

Unwilling to publically commit to a decision, NBC has issued a statement regarding the reports:

"Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay's show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance."

"The Jay Leno Show" premiered in its new earlier time slot on September 14 and saw record numbers on its first night with some 18 million viewers tuning in. The second episode, however, lost 40 percent of those viewers, with ratings trending downward since.

If NBC does make the move to shift Leno back to 11:30, there remains some question as to the fate of Conan O'Brien, who accepted ownership of "The Tonight Show" last June. "The Tonight Show" has also suffered from lower ratings since the departure of Leno, with its numbers dipping well below those during Leno's hosting stint.

Mariah Carey Gets Awards Speech Re-Do At People's Choice

The singer blames tipsy Palm Springs acceptance speech on champagne and Lee Daniels.

On Tuesday at the Palm Springs International Film Festival gala, Mariah Carey took the stage for easily the most awkward acceptance speech of the 2010 awards season so far. Honored for her supporting turn in "Precious," she giggled and leaned on the lectern for support as her eyes went glassy during uncomfortably long pauses. Finally, the diva confessed, "Please forgive me because I'm a little bit ... um, yeah!"

The next night at the People's Choice Awards, Carey explained her clearly inebriated behavior in Palm Springs. As she told reporters backstage, she and "Precious" director Lee Daniels hadn't seen each other in a while, and they got a little carried away while celebrating their reunion.

"We were celebrating and having little splashes [of champagne], and I hadn't eaten, and that's what it was," she said. "We were celebrating the movie and all the exciting stuff going on. There's a time for celebration and a time for not — but really, technically, it's a party atmosphere. We had splashes of champagne. I love Lee, but he's a bad influence."

Carey had a shot at a re-do when she won the People's Choice Award for Favorite R&B Artist. Maybe she had time for a nosh or skipped the bubbly, but she proved capable of delivering a speech sans awkwardness. Hubby Nick Cannon guided her up to the stage, lest her heels get caught in her floor-length gown, leading to an embarrassing tumble.

"My real fans know that they are my extended family, and I love them so much," she said in thanks.

Cobra Starship Hope For World Domination, 'Mad Men' Cameo In 2010

'This year we're taking Cobra worldwide,' Gabe Saporta says.

Last year was definitely good to the guys (and gal) in Cobra Starship. In 2009, they launched the deceptively brilliant "Cobra Cam" Web series, debuted in the top five with their Hot Mess album and scored a massive hit with "Good Girls Go Bad," a collaboration with "Gossip Girl" star Leighton Meester.

So how do they plan on following up the past 12 months? By taking their party-hearty message global — and then hitting the States with a mysterious co-headlining tour.

"This year we're taking Cobra worldwide," CS main man Gabe Saporta told MTV News on the People's Choice Awards red carpet. "We're going to a bunch of places we haven't been yet ... then in April we're doing a co-headlining tour with our boys — we can't announce who it is yet — but it's going to be an amazing tour. Anyone who's a fan of Cobra is definitely a fan of these dudes. It's gonna be awesome."

They're also setting their sights on something smaller: TV screens, with hopes of a cameo on the fourth season of AMC's angsty "Mad Men." It's a move that would require them to tone down the DayGlo (not to mention travel back in time), but they're willing to do it if necessary.

"I would love to be one of those lounge bands on 'Mad Men.' It takes place in the early '60s, [and we wouldn't be able to play] a cool song, because all those guys are uptight," Saporta said. "Then again, there's all those hippies from downtown. Maybe we could be hippies and get into a fight with Don Draper and he could beat us up."
