If there's a poster boy for success in 2009, it's probably Adam Lambert. Over the course of 12 months, he went from unknown L.A. theater kid to #3 on MTV News' Man of the Year list. His personal life filled the tabloids, his performances riled up the censors, and his talents — not just as a singer, but as a showman — won him millions of devoted fans.

And while Lambert was one of the biggest names in pop culture this year, we had to ask for his impressions of 2009. Who inspired him? Who pushed him to be great? And what was on his iPod? Here's what he told us:

Song of the Year

"Oh, it's difficult for me to pick one, because I make lists," Lambert told MTV News. " 'Boom Boom Pow' was pretty cool. 'Bad Romance' was a great song. I loved 'Sober' by Pink, that's a great song. I love her, she's amazing. I like that new Ke$ha song, 'Tik Tok,' that's a good song. 'Use Somebody' by Kings of Leon ... amazing."

Album of the Year

"Probably [Lady Gaga's The Fame.] Like I said, I am so bad at favorites," he said.

"I have a list of things that I love. You know what else is a great album? Miike Snow's [self-titled debut]. That album is unbelievable. I need to learn how to pronounce it, so I can start plugging it. Is it pronounced like the Japanese director? Mai-ike? Mike? That double 'I' is confusing. I'm gonna start calling them Mike now."

Man of the Year

"I don't know who I would say," he said, hesitating. "That's a tough question. Obama's a good one. Tiger Woods, not so much for me?"

Woman of the Year

"I do love Lady Gaga, it's no secret," Lambert declared. "Everyone knows that I get all obsessed over her."

T.I. Released To Halfway House

Rapper's lawyer says he was released from federal custody Tuesday afternoon.

T.I. isn't home yet, but the rapper appears to be on the road to freedom as he was released from prison custody on Tuesday (December 22) and is on the way to a halfway house to serve out the remainder of his sentence, his attorney told MTV News. Tip was serving a year-long sentence for felony weapons charges at a low-security federal prison in Forest City, Arkansas.

A report from XXL magazine on Tuesday morning first indicated that that rapper had been released. Steve Sadow, a lawyer who represented T.I. in the case, confirmed the information to MTV News, but as of press time, he wasn't sure if his client had arrived at the halfway house.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the rapper will be serving out the remainder of his sentence at Dismas Charities Atlanta West in Georgia. A spokesperson for Dismas could not be reached at press time.

Last week, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons told MTV News that T.I. could be sent to a halfway house in January.

"If his full-term release date is in March, it's not uncommon for an individual to be released to a halfway house to serve out the last portion of their federal sentence," Bureau of Prisons spokesperson Edmond Ross explained. "There are a number of factors that need to be considered: if the person is not a danger to the community, the current offense, the individual's prior criminal history, the availability of programs and space availability."

According to a representative for the agency who spoke with MTV news on Tuesday, however, prison records indicated that T.I. was still in custody at Forest City. A rep for the rapper's label had no comment on the matter, but multiple sources close to the rapper's camp suggested that he was in fact released to the home on Tuesday.

T.I. was originally sentenced in April of this year to serve 366 days in prison following an October 2007 arrest for illegally attempting to purchase firearms. He began his prison stint in May, after serving over 1000 hours of community service as a part of a plea deal he struck with prosecutors to avoid a lengthy jail sentence. When he is released from the halfway home, he will have to complete 500 more hours of community service and serve out the rest of his home confinement, which could be upwards of 20 to 60 days.

Jay-Z Premieres Video For 'Young Forever'

Overseas-only clip surfaced online Tuesday.

Jay-Z may have just turned 40, but the indomitable rapper's reign is far from over. Hov recently scored his first #1 record with "Empire State of Mind," and now with his latest video, "Young Forever," the Brooklyn rapper is asserting his claim that the best is yet to come.

In the clip — which popped up online Tuesday (December 22) — images of the the Roc Nation boss are juxtaposed with scenes of children, who playfully partake in youthful activities while Jay-Z performs onstage. There are shots of kids playing basketball, frolicking in a cornfield and breakdancing, and all the while Hov stays cool as he dutifully raps to a roaring crowd. The visuals were helmed by Anthony Mandler, who directed Jay-Z's "Run This Town" earlier this year and also worked on videos for Rihanna ("Russian Roulette"), T.I. ("Live Your Life").

However, the video is set to air overseas only, according to a rep for Atlantic Records, the record company distributing the rapper's Blueprint 3 album. The Swizz Beatz-assisted "On to the Next One" will be Jay-Z's next video in the States, and that clip is tentatively scheduled to premiere next month.

The past 12 months have been a testament to Jay-Z's staying power as he enters the next decade still holding the attention of fans that first began following him over 10 years ago. The rapper was named the Hottest MC in the Game by MTV News' Hip-Hop Brain Trust and recently was named MTV News' #2 Man of the Year. And he notched his 11th #1 album, the most of any solo performer as he bypassed even the legendary Elvis Presley. (Also toss in a couple notable interviews, among them Jay sitting on the sofa across from talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey.)

Mr Hudson, the Kanye West protégé featured on "Young Forever," told MTV News earlier this year he wanted to pinch himself after working with Jay-Z.

"I hope Jay ... Jay-Z still likes it," the singer said of their collaboration. "I call him Jay like I've met him more than twice, but we flipped [Bob Dylan's] 'Forever Young.' ... But to be on a Jay-Z album and a Kanye West album in six months ... I'm pinching myself. To be honest, it just does not sink in."

Simon Cowell's Brother Says He Is Leaving 'American Idol'

As if Paula Abdul's exit from the "American Idol" judging panel wasn't enough of a shock to the audience, then this news will leave them speechless. Tony Cowell, Simon's older brother, revealed in his weekly podcast "The Cowell Factor" that the upcoming ninth season of the show will be Simon's last, as he's focused on bringing his British talent competition "X-Factor" to the States.

"Meanwhile, Simon prepares for a new season of 'Idol' — or should I say, his last season of 'Idol,' " Tony said in the December 19th episode. "A press statement is being prepared which will confirm what everybody expected: Simon will leave 'Idol' at the end of 2010 to concentrate on bringing the American version of 'X Factor' to U.S. TV in 2011."

This conflicts with earlier news reports in which Robert Sillerman — CEO of CKX, the parent company of "Idol" and co-producer 19 Entertainment — said Cowell was in negotiations to renew his contract for another three seasons.

"We've heard from Fox, who has asked us for approval for Simon Cowell to appear for three more years on 'Idol,' " Sillerman said. "They, in their negotiations with Cowell, have asked us to pre-approve him not only for 'American Idol' '09, which has begun taping, but they have also asked us for approval for '10 and '11, indicating to us that they're finishing their negotiation with Cowell. We did grant approval for that, quite obviously."

In August, Paula Abdul confirmed that she would not be returning to the show. Rumors surfaced that Abdul was not happy with the amount of money she was offered to renew her contract.

"I'll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon," Adbul tweeted. "What I want to say most is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me. I do, without any doubt, have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all."

And while the network and show producers weren't able to work things out with Adbul, they did find a replacement. In September it was announced that Ellen DeGeneres would take a permanent seat on the judging panel. The show's host Ryan Seacrest also renewed his contract for the next three seasons. Last season's new addition, Kara DioGuardi, is on board for the upcoming season as well as Randy Jackson, who is under contract until the end of the current season.

Kid Cudi Held At Gunpoint By L.A. Police

Kanye West protégé Kid Cudi was stopped by the Los Angeles Police Department on Monday in a case of mistaken identity during a magazine photo shoot, according to an online report.

The "Day N' Nite" star was being snapped for a spread in an upcoming issue of British magazine New Music Express. According to the magazine's site, after the shoot ended, Cudi and his entourage piled into two SUVs and a Jeep, but before they got very far two police cars closed the road ahead of the crew. Police then ordered everyone out of the car and forced the passengers to the ground on their knees, reportedly responding to a call from a neighbor in the area saying that a group of men were looting.

Writer Emily Mackay was one of those on the scene, and according to her blog post about the incident, she, Cudi and others were handcuffed. She said that there were "10 or so armed police officers with an alarming amount of weaponry pointed in our direction as a helicopter circles overhead."

The rapper was released moments later, and the officer in charge claimed it was a case of mistaken identity. Cudi appeared "jovial" after the incident, Mackay said.

"Who knows, really, the story changed a bunch," Cudi later told NME.com about the ordeal. "I'm just happy to be back. I'm a free man! For that moment I was not free. I was in handcuffs. It did not feel very comfortable."

A representative for the LAPD had no comment when contacted by MTV News. Representatives for Cudi were not available as of press time. The rapper's manager, Plain Pat, tweeted about the incident, assuring fans that Cudi was not arrested.

Cudi was in Los Angeles to perform a few shows. Last week the rapper ended his stint as Lady Gaga's opening act, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts, but it is thought that his recent scuffle with a fan in Vancouver may have had something to do with it. The fan decided not to press charges against the rapper.

Lil Wayne Shows You How And Where He Records His Rhymes

On Monday, DJ Scoob Doo gave MTV News a behind-the-scenes preview of his new DVD, "The Nino Brown Story Pt. 2," featuring Lil Wayne reflecting on his past. Now Scoob graced us with another preview, showing us how Wayne really gets down in the studio.

You would imagine that a Lil Wayne recording session would involve a smoke-filled room and Weezy bobbing spastically in the booth, spitting an onslaught of lyrics at the mic. The fact that Wayne doesn't write anything down only adds to the legend but it's the small things that set Wayne apart from the rest.

Wayne is shown listening to the playback of a freestyle he spit over Jay-Z's "D.O.A (Death of Auto-Tune)" for his No Ceilings mixtape, and he's not sure if he's getting his point across.

"Say, because I said, 'Getting swallowed in a Maybach,' I meant the Maybach's so big. I don't want n---a thinking I'm getting h--- in the Maybach."

After a sip of his juice, a lightbulb seemly goes off in his head and Wayne runs back into the booth. He asks his engineer to play the sound back from a certain point and begins to re-record the lines, "I do it for my team Tim Tebow, n---a/ I'm killin' this shit, grim reap flow n---a/ Getting swallowed by the Maybach, deep throat n---a."

According to DJ Scoob Doo, Wayne's partner on the DVD, the clip was shot in the wee hours of the morning in the rapper's Miami condo. "You get to see how much fun Lil Wayne has making songs. It's phenomenal to see somebody at 7 o'clock in the morning or 8 o'clock in the morning after being in the studio for a good 10, 12 hours and still having fun."

Wanye exited the booth excited to hear the small change, and then turned to the camera to explain the importance of paying attention to detail.

"That's important, rappers, on the real — two-letter words are important. You gotta change sh--. Think about the things you say, because people are listening," Wayne said. "It's simple, but it's important.

"And this is just a mixtape."

Not only are Taylor Swift and Beyoncé nominated for a slew of Grammy Awards next month, but the pop superstars were just announced to play the big show on January 31.

Along with Swift and Beyoncé, the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Antebellum and Maxwell are among the first acts announced as performers at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, which airs live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on CBS. Additional performers and presenters are set to be announced in the coming weeks.

Last year, Swift and her pal Miley Cyrus sang Swift's track "Fifteen" together on the show. Swift is up for eight Grammys including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "You Belong With Me."

"I honestly never would have predicted this, eight nominations. I'm ecstatic and blown away and so, so thankful," she said earlier this month about the nominations. "To be recognized by the Grammys is the ultimate honor."

Beyoncé received 10 nominations, competing against Swift in categories like Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Country act Lady Antebellum have two nominations. Meanwhile, the Black Eyed Peas and Maxwell are up for six awards each.

"This is a blessing. We're very blessed," Fergie told MTV News about the band's nominations earlier this month. "The thing is, we're still hungry, we're still working hard ... and all of the work we've put into it just makes us appreciate it more."

Although a conclusive determination of Brittany Murphy's cause of death has been deferred for now, details about the morning of her death on Sunday have begun to emerge. According to notes written by a Los Angeles County Coroner's office investigator, Murphy's mother and husband frantically tried to save the actress before she died.

In notes reportedly obtained by TMZ, Investigator Blacklock noted that Murphy, 32, "had been complaining of shortness of breath and severe abdominal pain" in the seven to 10 days leading up to her death. Other reports had said she'd been experiencing flu-like symptoms in the days before her passing.

The notes go on to say that Murphy then went into the bathroom at around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. Her mother, Sharon Murphy, went to check on her about half an hour later and discovered Murphy "lying on the floor unresponsive." The investigator also wrote that she called for help, prompting Murphy's husband, Simon Monjack, to come see what the problem was.

While her mother called 911, Monjack "attempted to revive the decedent by placing her in the shower and running the water. ... The decedent remained unresponsive and purged her stomach contents prior to the arrival of the paramedics," according to notes.

By the time the paramedics arrived, she was "without signs of life." She was then moved to the master bedroom where several prescription drugs were found, some prescribed to Murphy, others prescribed to her husband or mother. TMZ reports that antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication, painkillers, an anti-infammatory, an antibiotic, hypertension medication, a drug to treat diabetes and one to prevent seizures or migraines are listed in the notes.

"No alcohol containers, paraphernalia or illegal drugs were discovered," the notes reportedly say. "The night prior to her death, the decedent had consumed some noodles, leftover Thai food, Gatorade, water and tea with lemon."

According to her husband, who spoke to the investigator, he didn't think much of the pain she suffered in the days leading up to her death since, "she often suffered from severe menstrual pains."

TMZ also reported that Murphy left a will, drafted before she married Monjack, that bequeaths her estate to her mother. There was no information on whether her will had been updated since her marriage.

Adam Lambert appeared on "The Jay Leno Show" on Monday night, where he discussed how dramatically his life has changed since he competed on "American Idol," performed at the American Music Awards and released his first album, For Your Entertainment.

"I'm hanging on white knuckles. It's a good ride. I mean how hasn't [life changed since 'Idol']?" he said. "It's wild. I have people that are so supportive of me that are buying the CD."

Lambert said the new season of "American Idol," set to begin in January, will be very different without Paula Abdul sitting at the judges' table. "I think Paula's amazing," he said. "It's bound to be different. She provided so much warmth and positive critiques. [Simon's] great at what he does. He's hard on people. Paula's the flip ... she provides positive reinforcement."

The singer also talked about what he did before his career in entertainment. "I worked at Starbucks when I was 16. ... It was all right," he said about his former day job. "I liked meeting new people. I used to come home and I stunk of coffee beans and it was awful."

Lambert explained his short-lived stay at college, saying, "[My parents have] always been really supportive [like] when I decided to drop out of college after five weeks. I tried. ... [I was studying] musical theater. I don't know. ... I thought to myself I don't want to learn this in a classroom. [My father] was always supportive. My mother was always supportive. They were always there for me and ... I know they're very proud."

The singer also discussed his younger brother on the show, noting that he did manage to graduate school. "You know he's got a little artistic [side]," he said. "He just graduated college. He was a political science major. He's a great writer. He's a lot more cynical than I am, but he's funny. He's really smart."

The "Idol" runner-up also took some time to clear up rumors that have been floating around about him. "I haven't started a makeup line. I might, but I haven't yet," he said. "My father was rumored to be mortified by what I did [at the 'American Music Awards'] and that we're not speaking. That's a rumor. ... I think Bill O'Reilly perpetuated that. Lovely man. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. [My dad and I] were laughing about it ... so that was a rumor."

Lambert ended his "Leno" appearance with a performance of his song "Whataya Want From Me."

Brittany Murphy's Husband, Simon Monjack, Finds Himself In Media Spotlight

The actress and screenwriter/director were married for two and a half years.

Brittany Murphy's sudden death at the age of 32 has thrust her husband of two and a half years, Simon Monjack, into the media spotlight for the first time without his wife by his side. So who is Monjack?

Monjack started his career as a commercial director and went on to become both a screenwriter and film director. The 39-year-old's most high-profile exposure came via story and executive producer credits on 2006's "Factory Girl," the Sienna Miller-starring biopic about '60s It girl Edie Sedgwick. Before then, he directed and co-wrote "Two Days, Nine Lives," an indie film one critic likened to "The Breakfast Club," only "with more crack."

Murphy and Monjack got engaged in 2006 and married the following year at their Los Angeles home in a ceremony officiated by a rabbi. Afterwards, they jetted off to the Kentucky Derby. Murphy had previously been engaged twice — once to a Hollywood lighting and rigging technician and once to talent agency head honcho Jeff Kwatinetz.

According to People, Monjack was slated to direct a film about Sigmund Freud in which Murphy would star, but that project never moved into production.

A report in the New York Daily News highlighted the income disparity between Murphy and Monjack. While she was paid $4 million for 2004's "Little Black Book," he suffered financial woes, including being sued by a mortgage company for $470,000 and being evicted from his residence.

In November, Monjack was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after reportedly becoming incoherent during a flight originating in Puerto Rico. Murphy had been in Puerto Rico filming the horror movie "The Caller," but she was replaced in the role due to "creative differences," her publicist said. Rumors swirled that both Murphy and Monjack were causing problems on the set, the latter often arguing with members of the crew.

Following Murphy's death, Monjack reportedly requested that an autopsy not be performed, though that procedure eventually took place anyway. "My initial reaction to the autopsy was 'they're going to cut her open.' I couldn't bear it," he told People. "That would break her mother, but we realized we needed to know. I look forward to getting the results."

Earlier, Monjack defended his relationship with Murphy to "Access Hollywood," saying, "We found love. ... Brittany didn't get to where Brittany was with anyone controlling her."
