Michael Jackson's Brothers React To His 'MTV News' Man of the Year' Honor

'You made the right choice, definitely,' Jermaine Jackson says.
By James Montgomery

On Friday (December 18), MTV News named Michael Jackson the Man of the Year, and not just because his death was the biggest story of 2009. In passing, he reminded us all of his formidable legacy — as a musician, a showman and a cultural icon. He revolutionized the world of music videos, wowed fans around the world and, somewhere along the way, helped a fledgling cable channel called MTV to establish a foothold in the world.

And for all those reasons — not to mention a few more — Jackson's surviving brothers think MTV News made the right call.

"I think it's great, because Mike was a pioneer," Jermaine Jackson said. "I really feel he put MTV on the map because of his contributions to music. You made the right choice, definitely."

Marlon Jackson agreed, though he added that Michael should also be remembered for something else — his charitable work, most of which he did not participate in because he knew it would earn him headlines, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

"There are so many other things too. Michael and the brothers, when we were the Jackson 5, used to go to children's hospitals, and that hasn't stopped," Marlon said. "And a lot of people didn't know about all the different charities he paid for — a lot of celebrities, when they had passed and could not afford to bury themselves, he would pay for it. The Lord puts you in the position to help others, and that's part of helping others."

By James Montgomery

Last week, we detailed Rihanna's rather, uh, eventful year when we named her our #3 Woman of 2009. It started in February with her assault at the hands of then-boyfriend Chris Brown, and culminated in the release of her most adventurous album yet, the dark and artful Rated R. Along the way, she overcame adversity and reclaimed her title as one of the biggest acts in the world and, perhaps most notable of all, she inspired millions with her strength and spirit.

But what inspired her? When we caught up with Rihanna on the set of her just-released "Hard" video, we decided to find out. She let us in her world, revealing the song that served as the soundtrack for her year, and the artist who she idolized the most in '09.

Song of the Year

" 'Empire State of Mind' was definitely one of my favorite records of 2009 ... one of the biggest records of 2009, also. It's timeless. It's epic, and it makes me want to be from New York every time I hear it. I'm like, 'Wow, I wish I was in New York, or I wish I was from New York.' It's just that great feeling when you hear it."

Artist of the Year

"[Lady Gaga]. She has a very bold, fearless image and, I have to say, I have so much respect for original artists ... who aren't afraid to do what they do. That's what I respect the most. She's awesome."

When Brittany Murphy died suddenly Sunday morning (December 20), she left behind an impressive body of work and a lot of fans wondering what cut her life so short. Similarly, the Hollywood community and her own family spent the asking questions and mourning the 32-year-old actress.

"Brittany was one of the sweetest people you will ever meet," "Scrubs" star Donald Faison said in a statement to MTV News regarding the actress, who co-starred with him in the 1995 hit "Clueless." "She had the voice of an angel and a genuine heart of gold. I'm very happy to have known and worked with such a special person. My heart goes out to all of her loved ones."

"I always felt connected to her as we shared a very special experience in our lives together," another "Clueless" co-star, Alicia Silverstone, told People magazine. "I feel love in my heart for her — and hope she is at peace. This is truly sad ... I loved working with Brittany. She was so talented, so warm and so sweet."

Others stars took to a familiar, very modern way of expressing grief at a time like this, posting messages on Twitter.

"Never met her, but sad to hear about Brittany Murphy," Kevin Smith tweeted Sunday afternoon. "G'night, Ms. Murphy; hope you're rollin' with the homies someplace nice."

"Known her since we were kids. Very sad ... I'm shocked," "Less Than Perfect" actress Sara Rue wrote. "Hold the ones you love close today. Xoxo."

"Meet the Barkers" star Shanna Moakler tweeted. "R.I.P Brittany Murphy. Too young."

"So saddened about Brittany Murphy," wrote actress Diora Baird. "There's not too many broads that can make you laugh, but she was one of the top in my eyes."

Musician Josh Groban took a more judgmental tone with his Twitter statement: "Hollywood loses another bright soul. ... How many more?" he asked. "A decade of decadence and devastation. Time to wake up."

"So sad: Brittany Murphy has died," tweeted film critic Richard Roeper. "Did some fine work in '8 Mile' and 'Sin City' and (chilling title now) 'The Dead Girl.' "

"Had a great meeting with Brittany Murphy for 'The Nines,' " writer/director John August wrote, remembering his 2007 Ryan Reynolds film that she auditioned for but was not cast in. "She was truly cool, and I rooted for her comeback."

"RIP Brittany Murphy," "Slither" writer/director James Gunn echoed. "She was a very nice girl and this is sad as hell."

Although Murphy was working on various projects at the time of her death, she had most recently been seen playing a government seismologist in the earthquake thriller "Megafault," which was released on DVD last month. Her director on that film, David Michael Latt, spoke to MTV about Murphy's humanity. "Brittany approached every day on set with smiles and a cheery attitude. She made it a point to meet everyone in the crew and thank the fans that came to set," he explained. "I remember one instance when she heard that a young man just came back from two tours in Iraq. She went up to this soldier and thanked him for his service, took some pictures, and gave an autograph — even though she was in the middle of a very emotional scene."

Finally, Murphy's father — Angelo Bertolotti of Branford, Florida — told The Associated Press that he is "broken up" by his daughter's death. "She was just a regular girl," he said. "[She was] an absolute doll."

Lil Wayne has come a long way since he was in school, and he's got the crib to prove it. In an exclusive preview from Wayne and DJ Scoob Doo's forthcoming behind-the-scenes DVD, "The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 2" (the follow-up to 2008's part one), we get a look at Wayne's home and hear him reflecting on his past.

In the clip, Wayne talks about his early days as a rapper. "I was still in school after I dropped my first solo album," he said. "After I dropped Tha Block Is Hot, I was still in school. It was platinum and I was still in school."

Wayne was literally riding the success of his 1999 debut album, with a brand-new Mercedes-Benz drop-top two-seater with a Kompressor engine. He said that many of the people in his neighborhood didn't know such a car existed, and thought he'd had it made especially for him. But his good fortune did not end there, as he got a call from Cash Money label head Baby one evening, asking him to come to his house: " 'Yo shawty, come to the crib,' " Wayne recalled him saying. Wayne said he went to Baby's house and was told to go to the back, where the tarp was taken off of a BMW two-seater, a gift from the label.

In the clip, Wayne also recalls that his mother ordered him to leave school. "My mom, she made quit," he said. " 'Look, I'm going to let you quit school, but them b----s better get you a tutor!' " Wayne said, mimicking his mother's voice. He said he called up Baby to make it happen.

" 'Yo B, my momma said I have to get me a tutor.' I had the tutor the next day," he recalled. " 'You gotta go at 9, shorty,' " Baby said.

Despite his mother's insistence, Wayne said he continued to go to his old school anyway. "They used to make me get off the campus and all kinds of wild sh--. 'Get off the campus!' C'mon man, I'm my own millionaire! You gonna really kick me off a public school campus? I just was going to this [school] last week, making straight A's."

"I love school, like my daughter," he continued. "My daughter cries when we say she has to stay home because she's sick."

Later in the clip Wayne exits the studio area of his Miami mansion walking down a narrow hallway that has one of the walls adorned with a number of guitars. The kitchen area sitting just outside Wayne's living room is surrounded by a pile of clothes and fitted baseball caps that sit neatly on the floor. "Clothes on the floor," Wayne confirms to the camera. After a long day of work, Weezy sits comfortably in his living room watching a Boston Red Sox game on his flat-screen television with two of his pals.

MTV News will have more footage from Lil Wayne and Scoob Doo's "The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 2" this week!

Brittany Murphy Dead At 32

The 'Clueless' star reportedly went into cardiac arrest and died Sunday morning in Los Angeles.
By Josh Horowitz

Brittany Murphy, the 32 year-old actress best known for energetic roles in "Clueless," "8 Mile" and "Sin City," died at 10:04 a.m. PT on Sunday (December 20) in Los Angeles, a spokesperson for Cedars Sinai Hospital confirmed to MTV News. The spokesperson would not provide further details, but TMZ.com reported that the actress went into full cardiac arrest and could not be revived. The Los Angeles Times reports that the city's police department has opened a preliminary investigation into Murphy's death.

A rep for the actress said in a statement released Sunday: "In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy."

Along with co-star Alicia Silverstone, Murphy first came to prominence thanks to a memorable turn as Tai in the instantly quotable 1995 teen classic "Clueless." The New Jersey-born Murphy provided Tai with the perfect street-smart sass counterpoint to Silverstone's Cher.

In a 2006 interview with MTV News, Murphy recalled her happy times on the set of the film. "I'd never been in a film before, so it was really exciting," she said. "I was only 15, and I was really intimidated. I felt as though I was the freshman watching the seniors. The one person who bridged the gap was Alicia [Silverstone]. She always was very kind to me. She was the person I spent the most time with — her and her dog."

Always an actress who seemed to be juggling multiple projects, Murphy worked steadily after the her high profile big break, notably alongside Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder in "Girl Interrupted" and opposite Clive Owen in the noir thriller "Sin City," in which she played a femme fatale.

In 2002, she appeared as Eminem's onscreen (and rumored offscreen) love interest in the box-office smash, "8 Mile." Looking back on the experience in 2006 she told MTV News, "When I remember '8 Mile,' I recall very specifically music being everywhere. Marshall [Mathers] was recording Encore and everything for '8 Mile' at the time. I remember when the whole cast was brought in to hear 'Lose Yourself' and watching Mekhi [Phifer] hear it for the first time. That was really fun. There was music being created everywhere, and it was such a large part of the film as well."

Prior to her casting in "Clueless," Murphy had appeared in various sitcoms, including "Frasier" and "Blossom." At the age of 9 she proved to have musical aspiration when she starred in a production of "Les Misérables." In recent years, Murphy dabbled increasingly in music, collaborating with Paul Oakenfold on the 2006 single "Faster Kill Pussycat" and performing on the soundtrack to the huge box office hit "Happy Feet" with covers of songs by Earth Wind and Fire and Queen.

Murphy remained a prolific actress in recent years. There are at least two films she is known to have shot before her passing: "Abandoned" and "Something Wicked."

Lady Gaga Brings San Diego A Feast For The Eyes And Ears

Monster Ball is a two-hour spectacle of crazy costumes, feigned death and a little geographical snafu.
By James Montgomery

SAN DIEGO — The delightfully ancient San Diego Sports Arena has, over the years, played host to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Elvis Presley, prize fights, NBA All-Star Games and the massive Kobey's Swap Meet, where one can haggle over the price of airbrushed T-shirts or receive free legal advice. But it's a pretty safe bet that the arena has never seen a show the likes of the one Lady Gaga put on Saturday night.

And though the show was quite a spectacle — lights! smoke! costume changes! — it was Gaga's graciousness that made the crowd forgive the fact that at three different times during her set, she mistakenly addressed the crowd as "San Jose," a city some 500 miles to the north.

The first instance — during a break in "Just Dance" — was greeted with puzzled, "What did she just say?" murmurs from the audience. The second, during "Love Game" ("Scream, San Jose!"), elicited a smattering of laughter. And the third, during some between-song banter ("Now, San Jose ..."), got the crowd a bit agitated. It was a thoroughly surreal moment, though Gaga recovered beautifully, working the correct name of the city into the chorus of her song "Alejandro," then, at song's end, with a self-effacing (and crowd-pleasing) mea culpa.

"I am so lucky that San Diego rhymes with 'Fernando' and 'Alejandro,' " MTV News' Woman of the Year sheepishly laughed.

Later in the set, she apologized again for the mistake, explaining that just as she was about to go onstage, she was told that the show was taking place in San Jose. The crowd cheered wildly, and all was forgiven. Of course, it helped matters that, at this point, Gaga had spent the better part of an hour positively pouring herself into every note, dance step and barely there costume. Showmanship goes a long way, after all.

Make no mistake about it, Gaga's Monster Ball is a whirling, booming feast for the eyes and the ears. And on Saturday night, she was in full command of the entire thing, part ringmaster, part priestess, part S&M mistress.

Opening with the clubby strains of "Dance in the Dark" (from her recent The Fame Monster album), Gaga strode onstage in a diamond-crusted bodysuit lined with flashing lights, declared herself "a free bi---," then broke into a hip-displacing routine, backed by a trio of sinewy dancers who were dressed in their electro-ninja-mummy finest. As the song ended, she disappeared backstage, only to re-appear a few moments later for "Just Dance," which opened with her playing a keytar inside a glass case, in what appeared to be a subtle nod to the sculptures of British artist Damien Hirst.

The visuals didn't stop there, either. "LoveGame" saw her don an ensemble that looked like a cross between Marie Antoinette and H.R. Geiger. She performed "Speechless" behind a piano, wearing a massively ruffled collar which made her look like an overwrought mannequin (or ostritch). And on "The Fame," she strutted across the stage while wearing a golden Anubis helmet.

There were, of course, big set pieces (movable trees, mountable scaffolding), bright lights, booming soundscapes (Gaga's costume quick changes were aided with a pounding DJ mix) and edgy video clips (slo-mo glimpses of Gaga being slapped and vomited on, artful closeups of snarling dogs and brooding ravens). There were moments of sheer performance art, too, like when she skewered the concept of fame worship by lying prone on the floor and shouting, "Scream for me. Do you want me to die?"

She preached unity and gay rights, told a dirty joke or two, feigned her own death during the set-closing "Paparazzi," and then signified her own rebirth with the encore — a two song run of "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)" and her current smash "Bad Romance" — which had her descend from the heavens in a rotating gyroscope, as white lights and rolling fog filled the stage.

It was an ambitious, conceptual show, and, at nearly two full hours, it was a decidedly workmanlike effort, too. Gaga gave everything she had, and the crowd — gay and straight, young and old, all dressed in their Gaga-est getups (bubbles, feathers, lightning-bolt eye makeup and more than a few towering crowns) — matched her effort and intensity, screaming loudly, clapping thunderously, and singing along obediently.

Gaga clearly fed off the energy, and was touched by it too. There might have been a few missteps, but she powered through and turned the San Diego Sports Arena into a raucous, delightfully raw discotheque. Towards the end of her set, after wrapping up a banging take on "Poker Face," she laughed and said, "I had the best time tonight, San Diego!"

To hear the crackle of emotion in her voice, you believe she meant it — especially the part about San Diego.
