If there's a poster boy for success in 2009, it's probably Adam Lambert. Over the course of 12 months, he went from unknown L.A. theater kid to #3 on MTV News' Man of the Year list. His personal life filled the tabloids, his performances riled up the censors, and his talents — not just as a singer, but as a showman — won him millions of devoted fans.

And while Lambert was one of the biggest names in pop culture this year, we had to ask for his impressions of 2009. Who inspired him? Who pushed him to be great? And what was on his iPod? Here's what he told us:

Song of the Year

"Oh, it's difficult for me to pick one, because I make lists," Lambert told MTV News. " 'Boom Boom Pow' was pretty cool. 'Bad Romance' was a great song. I loved 'Sober' by Pink, that's a great song. I love her, she's amazing. I like that new Ke$ha song, 'Tik Tok,' that's a good song. 'Use Somebody' by Kings of Leon ... amazing."

Album of the Year

"Probably [Lady Gaga's The Fame.] Like I said, I am so bad at favorites," he said.

"I have a list of things that I love. You know what else is a great album? Miike Snow's [self-titled debut]. That album is unbelievable. I need to learn how to pronounce it, so I can start plugging it. Is it pronounced like the Japanese director? Mai-ike? Mike? That double 'I' is confusing. I'm gonna start calling them Mike now."

Man of the Year

"I don't know who I would say," he said, hesitating. "That's a tough question. Obama's a good one. Tiger Woods, not so much for me?"

Woman of the Year

"I do love Lady Gaga, it's no secret," Lambert declared. "Everyone knows that I get all obsessed over her."

Lil Wayne Shows You How And Where He Records His Rhymes

On Monday, DJ Scoob Doo gave MTV News a behind-the-scenes preview of his new DVD, "The Nino Brown Story Pt. 2," featuring Lil Wayne reflecting on his past. Now Scoob graced us with another preview, showing us how Wayne really gets down in the studio.

You would imagine that a Lil Wayne recording session would involve a smoke-filled room and Weezy bobbing spastically in the booth, spitting an onslaught of lyrics at the mic. The fact that Wayne doesn't write anything down only adds to the legend but it's the small things that set Wayne apart from the rest.

Wayne is shown listening to the playback of a freestyle he spit over Jay-Z's "D.O.A (Death of Auto-Tune)" for his No Ceilings mixtape, and he's not sure if he's getting his point across.

"Say, because I said, 'Getting swallowed in a Maybach,' I meant the Maybach's so big. I don't want n---a thinking I'm getting h--- in the Maybach."

After a sip of his juice, a lightbulb seemly goes off in his head and Wayne runs back into the booth. He asks his engineer to play the sound back from a certain point and begins to re-record the lines, "I do it for my team Tim Tebow, n---a/ I'm killin' this shit, grim reap flow n---a/ Getting swallowed by the Maybach, deep throat n---a."

According to DJ Scoob Doo, Wayne's partner on the DVD, the clip was shot in the wee hours of the morning in the rapper's Miami condo. "You get to see how much fun Lil Wayne has making songs. It's phenomenal to see somebody at 7 o'clock in the morning or 8 o'clock in the morning after being in the studio for a good 10, 12 hours and still having fun."

Wanye exited the booth excited to hear the small change, and then turned to the camera to explain the importance of paying attention to detail.

"That's important, rappers, on the real — two-letter words are important. You gotta change sh--. Think about the things you say, because people are listening," Wayne said. "It's simple, but it's important.

"And this is just a mixtape."

An autopsy on Brittany Murphy was performed in Los Angeles on Monday (December 21), the day after her death. In an e-mail to MTV News, representatives for the Los Angeles County Coroner's office disclosed the initial results.

"The Los Angeles County Department of Coroner conducted an autopsy on the body of Brittany Anne Murphy-Monjack, age 32, on December 21, 2009," the statement reads. "The cause of death has been DEFERRED pending the receipt of additional toxicological tests and tissue studies that have been ordered by the deputy medical examiner.

"There will be no final ruling as to the cause and manner of death until all of the requested test results have been received and reviewed in context with the autopsy findings. It is anticipated that this process may take approximately 4 to 6 weeks or more.

"Anatomical findings show no evidence of trauma to the body."

As initial reports suggested, foul play is not suspected in her death.

People magazine reported on Monday that Murphy had been experiencing flu-like symptoms for days before her death, and quotes a spokesperson for the coroner who confirmed that she had been taking prescription medication.

"The family said that she felt ill for a few days prior with flu-like symptoms and that she had vomited," Ed Winter told the magazine. "She was taking prescription medication, but I can't confirm what types or quantities. We're in the process of interviewing her doctor to find out her past medical history."

"She appeared to be healthy," he continued. "She's a small woman, though." In addition to the reported flu-like symptoms, "Her mother reported to the hospital that she had some history of diabetes," Winter said, "but we haven't been able to confirm that or not, or to what level it was."

The Associated Press published a similar report, suggesting that the illness may have contributed to her death.

Fans, colleagues and celebrities have been mourning the actress' death since reports first emerged early Sunday. "Today the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon," tweeted Ashton Kutcher, Murphy's "Just Married" co-star and former off-screen boyfriend. "See you on the other side, kid."

Lady Gaga Reveals Details Of Revamped Monster Ball Tour For 2010

'This is definitely going to bring [showbiz] back,' Gaga says.
By James Montgomery

If you've been meaning to check out Lady Gaga's Monster Ball Tour, but haven't found the time yet, get thee to a Stub Hub, stat. Because after she wraps the U.S. leg of the jaw-dropping jaunt in January, Gaga is planning on scrapping the entire thing in favor of a brand-new show, which she'll unveil during her run of U.K. arena shows the following month.

It may sound crazy — and certainly, those close to the singer maintain it is — but, as Gaga sees it, re-vamping the Monster Ball Tour is just something she has to do, especially since the current version of the tour came together at the very last second.

"It's kind of funny because, after Kanye and I split up for this tour, I was really unsure if I could get a show together in time for my fans," Gaga told MTV News on Saturday, hours before her Monster Ball stop in San Diego. "But I didn't want to disappoint them and not tour over Christmas, and I had a new record coming out, so ... what's exciting about this show is that I was able to put together something that, in truth, I never would have done if I had a longer amount of time.

"So, I put together a show that is so perfectly an avant-garde-performance-art-fashion installation, put in a blender and vomited on as a pop show. It's kind of this amazing theme of evolution, but it's in a garage, and me and all my friends are kind of exploring the music," she continued. "But it's a very vacuous space. It's a box, it's a runway, and we have to transform that space to feel like eight different acts throughout the entire show. But for the next version of the Monster Ball, which is going to be in February when I begin in the U.K. with my arena tour, I'm throwing out the stage. My team thinks I'm completely psychotic. But I don't f---ing care what they think."

Gaga wouldn't divulge too many secrets of the new Monster Ball, but she did say that Danish pop act Alphabeat will serve as the opening act. And she also hinted that her fans will be in for a very big show, in just about every conceivable way.

"Well, just to give you an idea, the stage is about four times the size of the one we're on now and conceptually, it's completely different," Gaga said. "One thing that has been lost over the past 10-15 years, in pop music, is the idea of showbiz. And this is definitely going to bring that back."

Lady Gaga On Being Named MTV News' Woman Of The Year: 'It Means Everything'

'It makes me want to work harder,' says singer, who cites VMA performance as high point of year.
By James Montgomery

No one had a bigger 2009 than Lady Gaga. Her hits were omnipresent. Her tours legendary. Her television appearances, well, they were definitely water-cooler material. And that's saying nothing about her outfits, her photo spreads or her art.

So it was no surprise that last week, MTV News named her Woman of the Year.

On Saturday — hours before her triumphant Monster Ball tour stop in San Diego — we sat down with the reigning princess of pop to talk about the year that was, the year that will be (from the sound of things, she's not planning on resting in 2010) and what the Woman of the Year honor meant to her. Turns out, it meant an awful lot.

"It means everything," Gaga said. "I'm not only flattered but really excited. It makes me want to work harder, make better videos and better shows and better music all the time. I really appreciate all the love MTV has shown me, and the support. My performance at the VMAs, for me, was a turning point artistically, and I appreciated that you guys supported me so much."

And speaking of that blood-soaked, metaphor-heavy Video Music Awards performance (you remember it — the one where she was crushed by a chandelier, gushed gallons of blood and ultimately ascended to heaven?), Gaga counts it as one of her high points of 2009, not only because it set the stage for her current incarnation (the so-called "Fame Monster"), but because it was something she'd been dreaming about for years.

"I always dreamed about being a performer on the MTV awards. ... More importantly, I wanted to be a performer, and I wanted my VMA performance to be my groundbreaking, life-changing performance," she said. "So everything that I'd been working on was leading up to that moment, and then after that I gave birth to this new album, The Fame Monster. It was an amazing moment for me."

As friends and family still react to the sudden and tragic passing of Brittany Murphy, who died of cardiac arrest on Sunday, fans of the 32-year-old actress are still in shock over her loss.

"I was really surprised. It was really a disappointment, 'cause she's a big actress. She made a lot of movies," Alex told MTV News. "She was really young and for someone to die so young ... it's really terrible."

Another fan, Evan, added, "I saw it in the papers and I was totally shocked — crazy. She seems pretty young for that kind of death. We were totally shocked when we saw it in the papers this morning."

Fans flooded MTV News' Web site with condolences for Murphy's family, including her husband, Simon Monjack, with whom she recently shared she wanted to start a family in the coming year. "My heart goes out to her husband and her entire family, R.I.P Brittany M. I think she was very talented, in my opinion. Wow, we lost a very down-to-earth kind of woman. She's going to be truly missed," Stacey Linnear wrote. "A beauty full of sunshine."

Many other fans, like jtcj25, saw this as just the latest celebrity tragedy this year. "This is just tragic. I'm sick of everyone dying. 2009 is the worst year!" they wrote. "I am saddened for her family and for the world of entertainment. Brittany Murphy was a find."

Lisa echoed the sentiment, adding, "It seems like so many young persons die lately. Michael Jackson, DJ AM, Brittany Murphy ... this is really tragic and my heart goes out to Brittany's family, friends and of course fans. What was the cause of the heart attack? So sad. Rest in peace, girl, gone too soon."

Fans like Gina recalled Murphy's films and memorable roles. "So sad. I loved Brittany Murphy!" she wrote. " 'Clueless' & 'Riding in Cars with Boys' are my favorite movies of all time! How awful & right before Christmas. May she rest in peace!"

'They kicked me out,' Que says, citing differences with band's management.
By Jocelyn Vena

After a video appeared online over the weekend of Day26's Qwanell "Que" Mosley announcing he was no longer with the band, his manager confirmed the split to MTV News on Monday (December 21). Que said the split had nothing to do with Diddy or Bad Boy, which his manager also confirmed.

In the video, Mosley, speaking from a recording studio where his management said he is currently working on solo music, says: "I love Day26 and I just wanted to move forward with my management. I feel bad for my brothers because they don't get it, and they making me seem like the bad guy. But no, MTV don't got control of this no more, I'm telling the world the truth, it's [Day26 manager Joseph 'Screwface' Charles] Screwface, it's not Puff.

"I love all my fans and I want y'all to know I think y'all should know the truth. I'm not here trying to put anybody down but the fans deserve the truth. I love y'all and I support Day26. I just want to move on because they don't want to get their business in order. God bless them. I'm in the studio working. I'm just moving on. I wish them the best."

On Monday, Mosley spoke to MTV News about the split, adding that the friction between him and his band took place earlier this year and came to a head recently, causing him to post the video announcing his departure from the group.

"I was so confused and lost because I never had an issue with Day26," he said. "We just had to fix our business. I have nothing bad to say about them. I just want to move forward because they sent me a letter saying they don't want to work with me. ... I only had the issue with management. I don't feel protected around them now. I don't feel safe. I don't feel like they're my brothers anymore.

"They kicked me out," he continued, adding that any other negotiations with the label were made without him. "This is my business and this is my life. I don't want to be kept in the dark. I want to be in control of my business. I never had a motive."

At press time, Charles had not responded to MTV News' requests for comment, and a rep for Day26's new label Atlantic Records had no official confirmation or further information about Mosley's departure.

Get an advance look at 'The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 2' right here!

Lil Wayne has come a long way since he was in school, and he's got the crib to prove it. In an exclusive preview from Wayne and DJ Scoob Doo's forthcoming behind-the-scenes DVD, "The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 2" (the follow-up to 2008's part one), we get a look at Wayne's home and hear him reflecting on his past.

In the clip, Wayne talks about his early days as a rapper. "I was still in school after I dropped my first solo album," he said. "After I dropped Tha Block Is Hot, I was still in school. It was platinum and I was still in school."

Wayne was literally riding the success of his 1999 debut album, with a brand-new Mercedes-Benz drop-top two-seater with a Kompressor engine. He said that many of the people in his neighborhood didn't know such a car existed, and thought he'd had it made especially for him. But his good fortune did not end there, as he got a call from Cash Money label head Baby one evening, asking him to come to his house: " 'Yo shawty, come to the crib,' " Wayne recalled him saying. Wayne said he went to Baby's house and was told to go to the back, where the tarp was taken off of a BMW two-seater, a gift from the label.

In the clip, Wayne also recalls that his mother ordered him to leave school. "My mom, she made quit," he said. " 'Look, I'm going to let you quit school, but them b----s better get you a tutor!' " Wayne said, mimicking his mother's voice. He said he called up Baby to make it happen.

" 'Yo B, my momma said I have to get me a tutor.' I had the tutor the next day," he recalled. " 'You gotta go at 9, shorty,' " Baby said.

Despite his mother's insistence, Wayne said he continued to go to his old school anyway. "They used to make me get off the campus and all kinds of wild sh--. 'Get off the campus!' C'mon man, I'm my own millionaire! You gonna really kick me off a public school campus? I just was going to this [school] last week, making straight A's."

"I love school, like my daughter," he continued. "My daughter cries when we say she has to stay home because she's sick."

Later in the clip Wayne exits the studio area of his Miami mansion walking down a narrow hallway that has one of the walls adorned with a number of guitars. The kitchen area sitting just outside Wayne's living room is surrounded by a pile of clothes and fitted baseball caps that sit neatly on the floor. "Clothes on the floor," Wayne confirms to the camera. After a long day of work, Weezy sits comfortably in his living room watching a Boston Red Sox game on his flat-screen television with two of his pals.

MTV News will have more footage from Lil Wayne and Scoob Doo's "The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 2" this week!

Brittany Murphy's Best Moments On MTV News

From tours of the actress' trailer to shopping at Blockbuster, we never knew what would happen next.
By Larry Carroll

Over the weekend, 32-year-old actress Brittany Murphy passed away — and it's at times like this that we here at MTV News have to take a moment to reflect back on what it was like to spend time over the years with someone like her.

A lot of what you see in entertainment news is unapologetically manufactured. But when it came to Murphy, she was as pure a star as you could ask for — what you saw at home was exactly what she was like in real life. And as we got into the MTV offices this morning and began poring over some of the many interviews we had with her over the years, it was incredibly moving to see how her personality always shone through.

"Hey, MTV, this is Brittany Murphy, and you're now visiting my trailer — my very own trailer! — on the set of 'Molly Gunn,' " the actress told us in 2002, giving us a "Cribs"-style tour of her trailer when we visited her on the set of a film that would eventually be released as "Uptown Girls." "Would you like to see my refrigerator? We have Mountain Dew, Mountain Dew and some Mountain Dew."

A TV shoot with a movie star is very much determined by the actor. No matter how many hours of preparation or how many creative ideas you've come up with, if the star isn't eager to play ball, the footage won't work. That was never a problem with Brittany Murphy.

At the Movie Awards earlier that year, she had given her "8 Mile" co-star Eminem a two-fingered salute while he performed — and naturally, we had to ask why. "My fingers popped up, and I was having the time of my life," she bubbled over, happy to discuss anything. "I never saw him perform live, and it was so much fun!"

That sort of enthusiasm made Brittany seem like a real, normal person who gets excited at a concert, though unlike a normal person, she might even date somebody as cool as Eminem. Rumors were floating around that Murphy and Em had been more than just co-stars, so we again had to ask a potentially difficult question. And, once again, Brittany was polite and sweet.

"I'll never tell!" she teased, quoting what might be the most famous line of dialogue she ever delivered — a catchphrase yielded from the commercials for her movie "Don't Say a Word." "[Eminem and I] became very close, and that's all I'm going to say about that."

On a personal note, my most memorable interview with Murphy was in 2005 for my favorite film of hers, "Sin City." Before the cameras rolled, I told her how much I had enjoyed her in the otherwise-mediocre flick "Sidewalks of New York," and she was eager to talk about actor David Krumholtz, with whom she had created a truly adorable love story: "That was one of the coolest chemistries I've ever had as an actor," she beamed.

When the interview began, Murphy said her favorite thing about "Sin City" was "the fact that Clive Owen and Benicio Del Toro are fighting over me," and I remembered a key element in interviewing the star: Ask your question quickly, and then get out of the way. She was so energetic that you could see her wanting to talk as soon as you began asking the question. Although that can be tricky sometimes, with her it was always fun.

"I actually didn't realize how cool ['Sin City'] was," she beamed. "I didn't know that was the case until I saw the picture for the first time, the day before yesterday, and went, 'Wow! This is pretty amazing.' "

A few years prior, she took us on a fun tour of a Blockbuster Video store (remember those?).

"Thank you MTV; I'm sitting on the counter at Blockbuster, because I can — and I never will be able to do this again without getting in trouble," she giggled. "So, have a wonderful day or night or whatever time you're seeing this, and I'm going to go enjoy my movies!"

On her way out the door, after we had asked her simply to say "goodbye," Brittany improvised something more, flashing a peace symbol, then a bat-toosie as she giggled her farewell several times.

Bret Michaels Says Miley Cyrus 'Nailed' Cover Of 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn'

Miley Cyrus was excited to work with Bret Michaels on a "rad" cover of Poison's classic ballad "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," and the feeling was mutual. Michaels insisted that Cyrus is the real deal and he was honored that the star was interested in working with him on the song.

"It was really, really simple," he told MTV News recently while promoting his cameo in "American Pie Presents: The Book of Love." "I think her first concert was Poison. She saw us at Nashville at the arena. It was her introduction into rock and roll."

He went on to say that despite her role on "Hannah Montana" and her reputation for making catchy pop, Cyrus truly does have a rock-and-roll spirit. "She's one of the few musicians — and I want to use that word cause she can actually play and sing — she's one of the few people who can pull it off and give it her own flare and make it sound good," Michaels offered.

Although there's still some work to be done on the track before it hits stores, the Poison frontman noted that Cyrus "nailed the song. She really knew what she was doing." He added, "She got in there and picked the guitar up. It was one of those nights that just worked. It was fun. It's gotta be her taking 'Every Rose' and making it all hers."

He made sure to note that the track won't be a duet. "Well, I'll do some harmonies and stuff like that, but it's gotta be her version," he explained. "I think that's what's going to make the song feel like she owns it. She's got a very contemporary twist to it ... it has to be what she feels and [producer] John Shanks feels what's playing on contemporary radio."
