'Amazing Spider-Man' Star Shows Nerd Cred At Comic-Con

SAN DIEGO"The Amazing Spider-Man" swung into San Diego Comic-Con on Friday (July 22), and star Andrew Garfield made sure he came ready to talk about the comic book influences he drew from for his performance.

Part of what makes Garfield so endearing in the role is his passion for the character of Spider-Man and his love of the comic books. When he chatted with MTV News, he showed off his nerd cred by dropping comic book names when describing the suit and physicality he used for Peter Parker.

"The body time in the Ultimates is what I loved," he explained. "Because I'm skinny, if you hadn't noticed; I'm a skinny guy. I love the idea of a skinny guy beating the crap out of big guys just as a personal fantasy fulfillment."

But there was more to his performance than that. Garfield made sure he was very specific with his body movements and his physical appearance because he wanted to make a point of bringing more to the evolution of Peter Parker to Spider-Man than the previous films did.

"One of the elements that I was interested in was doing something with his physicality," Garfield said. "I wanted it to be like the venom, the spider bite, was doing something specific to his DNA ... In life, imagine like he has more arms than he does, more legs than he does, and more of a special awareness."

Fans have finally had a chance to take a look at "The Amazing Spider-Man" thanks to a trailer that debuted earlier this week. But, as a huge fan himself, Garfield had a bit of a difficult time rationalizing to himself that he was actually Spider-Man.

Garfield said there was only one moment in which he felt like he was Spider-Man instead of going through some strange out-of-body experience that wasn't really happening. "I was in a changing room on my own, and I could be honest with myself. I was really moved by it because no one else was around," Garfield said. "It was genuinely very, very emotional, and it felt surreal. It was the only moment where I felt like I was Spider-Man."

Justin Bieber's Next Big Adventure: Pee-wee Herman's Movie?

Pee-wee makes a plea from Comic-Con for singer to cameo in his Judd Apatow-produced film.

SAN DIEGO — Beliebers are in luck, because Justin Bieber might be heading to the big screen once again soon, if Pee-wee Herman has his way.

Turns out Herman, who has been working on a new film alongside producer Judd Apatow, has recently written the VMA nominee in as one of the celebrity cameos. The only problem? Bieber doesn't know yet.

"I can't really tell [what the cameo is], but he makes an appearance toward the end of the film," Herman (actor Paul Reubens, but we definitely interviewed Pee-wee) told MTV News at San Diego Comic-Con. "He doesn't know about it yet, so if you're watching this, Justin!"

That's not the only grade-A cameo Herman has written into the script. He has his eyes on lots of stars — and the White House.

"There's a party scene in the film that I think will have a lot of the stars. We just wrote President Obama into them. We have an offer out to him," Herman unveiled. Will any other government officials be given a role in the movie? "Sarah Palin wasn't asked. I have to draw the line somewhere, and unfortunately that's where it was drawn. I'm sorry, Sarah, I'm sorry," he whispered.

The script for the currently unnamed comedy is being looked at by Universal Studios at the moment, and Herman said he hoped filming could begin within the next couple of months. It only helps that he has Apatow in his court and that the director/producer has words of wisdom to pass on to Herman to make the best comedy he can.

"He's given us the same advice over and over again, which is 'emotional arc,' " Herman explained. "He wants the character to go through an emotional arc and to come out on the other end arced. So that's what we're doing. We're adding an emotional arc. Emotional growth, so there's a change in Pee-wee Herman during this film. Pee-wee makes a change."

Taylor Lautner Names Tom Cruise, Matt Damon As 'Abduction' Inspirations

At Comic-Con, 'Twilight' actor says he and John Singleton studied film.

SAN DIEGO -- Taylor Lautner is ready to abduct the title of Hollywood's resident action star when "Abduction" hits theaters September 23, but he didn't get there without a little inspiration from some of the genre's greatest actors.

When MTV caught up with the "Twilight Saga" star at Comic-Con 2011 this week, he revealed that he did more than admire the top action actors: He studied them. Considering "Abduction" is being described along the lines of the "Bourne" movies and "Minority Report," it makes sense that Tom Cruise and Matt Damon are among Lautner's biggest role models.

"I studied film with John Singleton while preparing for the movie, and I chose Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington, Harrison Ford; we just went down the list," Lautner explained. "It would be an honor to have a tenth the career that those guys have."

Having spent so much time watching the movies, Lautner said he sometimes found himself copying their moves during his takes. It took him time to take a step back and figure out how to tailor -- or "Taylor" -- their concepts to his own acting style.

He got a chance to meet Cruise while filming a promo for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, and though their work together wasn't action-oriented, Lautner said working with the "Mission: Impossible" actor was "surreal."

But was he able to hold it together around his idol? "I definitely played it cool," Lautner said with a laugh. "It was hard."

'Harry Potter' Fans Consider Life Post-Potter

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 04:09 AM PDT

'For those who have been so involved and grown up with the series, it feels like a chapter of your life has closed,' one expert says.
By Josh Wigler

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" has been in theaters for a week, kicking magical tail at the box office and basking in the glow of rave reviews from critics. All good things, to be sure, except for one not-so-tiny wound: "Harry Potter" is officially over.

"Wait ... there's no 'Part 3'?" joked a wistful Micah Tannenbaum of MuggleNet, commenting to MTV News on the fact that the "Potter" series is finally ending. "It's a bittersweet feeling. For those who have been so involved and grown up with the series, it feels like a chapter of your life has closed, but at the same time, you're eager to see what's next. J.K. Rowling always has something up her sleeve."

MTV's very own "Potter" expert Terri Schwartz, who was one of our main commentators during the "Harry Potter" World Cup, is one such reader to have grown up alongside the Boy Who Lived, giving her a unique perspective on the cinematic ending of Jo Rowling's magical franchise.

"It is fair to say that I grew up with 'Harry Potter,' so now that the movie series is over, there is an overriding sense of finality to the era that wasn't there when the last book came out," she said. "I definitely feel like I will never experience another pop-culture phenomenon quite like this again in my lifetime."

Indeed, it's a popular sentiment. For many fans, the end of "Potter" marks not just the end of a franchise, but the completion of a massive zeitgeist-defining tale the likes of which won't be repeated anytime soon. There's a sense of pride among "Potter" fans for having been around to witness such a narrative gift, but it doesn't come without a bittersweet cost.

"I think the fans are experiencing mixed emotions," Tannenbaum said. "It's a bit different than when 'Deathly Hallows' the book was released in 2007, because you still had several movies to look forward to. Now what?"

Thankfully, there is a place to turn: Pottermore, Ms. Rowling's online haven where muggles across the world can rediscover the majesty of "Potter" all over again.

"It's a good thing [she] decided to announce Pottermore just before the last film hit theaters," Tannenbaum said. "I have a feeling it will cure any lingering post-Potter depression and provide fans the ultimate online experience. With all the books being re-released over time with new content, fans can experience the series all over again."

Pottermore is still several months away, of course, but fans aren't without options: "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" is still in theaters, of course, and judging by last weekend's record-breaking box-office numbers, it's a sure bet that many Potterheads will be heading back to Hogwarts this weekend.

" 'Part 2' is definitely the strongest of the 'Potter' films, so it is exciting to see that this last movie is holding steady to be the strongest of the bunch," Schwartz said. "It just solidifies the fact that this is the most successful movie franchise in cinematic history, which is a title it well-deserves."

"The box-office results are impressive," Tannenbaum added. "I think the fact that 'Part 2' shattered midnight, opening-day and opening-weekend records here in the U.S. as well as records overseas shows the series' reach. It's the fastest film ever to the half-billion mark, and it has only been in theaters for a week! Plus, it just passed 'Star Wars' as the highest-grossing franchise of all-time. Definitely going out with a bang."

Check out everything we've got on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

Taylor Swift Is 'Totally Cool,' Tour Openers NeedToBreathe Say

South Carolina rock band tells MTV News Swift is 'very pro for somebody who's 21.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Even at the tender age of 21, Taylor Swift is one of the most poised superstars on the planet. And she has quite the reputation for being incredibly professional to work with. But when her tour openers NeedToBreathe finally got the chance to meet her, they were actually surprised by how true that is.

"Well, she won't let us look at her [for] long," Bear Reinhart joked to MTV News. Brother Bo added, "She wears, like, a veil over her face the whole time, like, no eye contact."

Of course, that is anything but true, and Bear later added, "Honestly, it's been really not like that at all. She was totally cool the first day ... very pro for somebody who's 21." Bo continued, "[She's] very down to earth and easy [to work with]."

As the story goes, Swift handpicked the South Carolina band to be the opening act on her Speak Now Tour, which is currently hitting up the country. And the band finds it hard to believe that they are playing to a sea of screaming teenage girls in arenas and stadiums night after night.

"We thought when people called us, we thought they were joking," Bear said of learning they'd be opening for the comely singer. "I think partly because it's Taylor Swift and partly because we're not really a country band and her fans are obviously a little younger than ours sometimes. But it's been cool because she genuinely likes music and she likes our band and she's been really sweet about the whole thing.

"We met her and she was kind of nervous around us," he continued. "I guess [because] we're older than her, but she's like a real fan. She's like, 'What songs are you gonna play?' So that's good, to be appreciated on a tour like that. Obviously, we could, like, never see her again, but she's been great."

Usher Collaborator Rico Love Calls Kelly Rowland's 'Motivation' 'Truly Organic'

Behind the Beats: Rico Love

If more people read the credits behind some of R&B's biggest hits, Rico Love should be a household name. Born Richard Preston Butler Jr., the former Florida A&M University student is now one of the music industry's most-sought-after singer/songwriters.

After writing hits for Usher ("There Goes My Baby"), Beyoncé ("Sweet Dreams") and Diddy-Dirty Money ("Hello Good Morning"), to name a few, one of Rico's biggest hits to date is Kelly Rowland's "Motivation."

"It came about in a truly organic way," Rico told Mixtape Daily of the Jim Jonsin-produced "Motivation." "We had this meeting in New York: myself and Sylvia [Rhone] and Kelly. And they just were saying, 'We need to find that single; we need that big single.' Everybody was asking for an uptempo, actually.

"I flew down to Miami the next day, and that Tuesday, we got back in the studio, and Jim started playing these chords, and then coming up with these little sounds — the signature sounds that Jim comes up with. I just told him to lay it like a skeleton idea, and I jumped in the booth, and I started with the verse, and I kind of sang my way all the way through the record."

Rowland, formerly of Destiny's Child, was in the studio while Rico was laying down the reference track and made her regard for the song known immediately. "Kelly was there and watched the whole process," Rico recalled. "As soon as I finished singing the demo, usually an artist wants to live with it or listen to it for a little while. She just said, 'I want to cut it right now.' So she jumped in the booth, and we cut the record."

"Motivation" became the lead single for Rowland's third album, Here I Am, which was released in April. The song, which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, features a verse from Lil Wayne.

"Lil Wayne got out of jail a few days later, and as soon as he got out of jail, [Rowland] went to see him, and he jumped on it," Rico explained. "It was the most organized situation ever. It was nothing contrived about it."

There's been nothing manufactured about Rico's accomplishments either. Starting his musical career as a rapper, he has signed former Roc-a-Fella rapper Young Chris to his Universal/Motown-distributed Division 1 label.

After leaving Florida A&M to pursue music, Rico caught the attention of Usher, and penned songs for the R&B singer, including "Throwback." Other artists soon benefitted from his songwriting, including T.I., Pleasure P and Mario. Rico takes pride in being versatile with his talents, preferring not to make specific songs intended for specific artists only.

"Sometimes, when you keep an artist in mind, you'll limit yourself," Rico explained. "You won't go a place that they probably would go because you're thinking, "Nah, she wouldn't say this," or "He wouldn't do this," or "He wouldn't say this," and "This melody is out of the way for them."

"When I get a chance to just get into the studio and just write music and just produce music and sit at the piano and tell a guy where I want to hear the chords and create the progressions and just freely make music, it's a lot more fun."

Lately, Rico has been back in the studio with Usher. In 2007, he was signed to the singer's former US Records via J Records. But his debut album was never released, and he and Usher went their separate ways.

But as Rico become a songwriting force, the two eventually started working together again. The first song they recorded was the Grammy-winning "There Goes My Baby" from 2010's Raymond v. Raymond. Now, Rico is working on Usher's forthcoming album and embracing the pressure of surpassing its predecessor's platinum sales and critical success.

"I feel like this is what separates the boys from the men," Rico said of working with Usher. "This week, we been creating records together. We had two mics, two headphones set up in the booth, and we just sit there and vibe out.

"These first few days have been amazing. We got four records cut so far that sound super amazing. I'm super excited about it. I'm just anxious for the world to hear it."

Robert Pattinson Reveals Secret Behind 'Breaking Dawn' Sex Scene

'You have to have some tantric breathing and stuff,' he jokes to MTV News at Comic-Con.

SAN DIEGO — What kind of preparation went into the steamy love scenes in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I"? Well, if Robert Pattinson is to be believed, there was very little.

"You just get lubed up and jump right into it!" he proclaimed to MTV News while backstage at San Diego Comic-Con shortly after making an appearance on a panel with his "Breaking Dawn" castmates and director Bill Condon. The group answered questions from Comic-Con attendees and treated them to footage from the upcoming flick, which is the second-to-last film adaptation in the epic saga.

Fan familiarity with Stephanie Meyer's "Twilight" novels means anticipation has been high for several elements of "Breaking Dawn," including a wedding, a birth and perhaps the most anticipated of all: the sex scenes. Smiling broadly, RPattz added: "You have to have some tantric breathing and stuff."

All joking aside, it was pretty clear once Pattinson continued talking that there was, in fact, a bit of planning put into the onscreen depiction of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan getting down to some romantic business. "Everyone always says it about sex scenes in movies — it's really awkward and blah, blah, blah — but it is!" he pointed out.

Ultimately, he likened it to a popular board game. "You're playing Twister," Pattinson deadpanned.

With "Twilight" mania still in full swing, it might be hard for moviegoers to imagine seeing the chemistry between Pattinson and Kristen Stewart re-created within the context of different characters in another story, but that doesn't mean Pattinson wouldn't be up for re-teaming with her in a non-"Twilight" film.

"I'd love to. Definitely," he told us without hesitation. "I don't know how audiences would respond to it or whatever, [but] I'd love to."

'Captain America: The First Avenger': The Reviews Are In!

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 02:22 AM PDT

Film should give 'Harry Potter' a run for its money this weekend.
By Josh Wigler

The summer of superheroes rages on this weekend with the theatrical release of "Captain America: The First Avenger." It's the final building block audiences need before the full picture of Joss Whedon's "The Avengers" comes into focus this summer, and by all accounts, the movie does not disappoint. Sporting a fresh rating at review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes, both comic book fans and casual moviegoers alike are feeling the patriotic splendor that Cap has to offer, so "Harry Potter" better watch out: Steve Rogers' mighty shield could very will split the Boy Who Lived's wand in half this weekend!

Read on for a selection of the "Cap" reviews currently rocking the Web, and check out our own "Captain America" review on Splash Page. And if the star-spangled superhero spirit moves you, give us your own reviews in the comments section below.

The Story
"It was a pleasure to realize, once 'Captain America: The First Avenger' got under way, that hey, here is a real movie, not a noisy assembly of incomprehensible special effects. Of course it's loaded with CGI. It goes without saying it's preposterous. But it has the texture and takes the care to be a full-blown film. You know, like with a hero we care about and who has some dimension. And with weight to the story. As we plunge ahead into a limitless future of comic-book movies, let this be an inspiration rather than Thor or Green Lantern. " — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Hero
"As the titular comic book character, Chris Evans has an appealing, earnest quality, whether he's playing the digitally enhanced (reduced?) scrawny Steve Rogers or the well-muscled super-soldier dubbed Captain America. Evans provides just the right human anchor to the flash and dazzle of director Joe Johnston's production. The movie wouldn't work without Evans' likability and the sense of integrity he projects, as well as his all-American good looks." — Claudia Puig, USA Today

The Villain
"Then there's Hugo Weaving as Captain America's nemesis, Red Skull — a role that requires delivering a genuine performance from behind grotesque crimson prosthetics, which Weaving accomplishes with admirable dexterity. In fact, everyone hits their marks with energy and finesse in 'Captain America,' which with its clean, Art Deco lines and sprightly spirit exemplifies why comic book movies are such reliable fodder for Hollywood. They come pre-storyboarded, after all; their gadgets, dinguses and doo-dads are a production artist's dream, just as those tights, capes and masks must provide fetishistic frissons for the most on-trend costume designer." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Action
"A chase and shoot-out in a 'Dick Tracy' version of New York is one of the most thrilling scenes of the summer movie season, yet this generous film keeps the popcorn popping for two full hours. It's got musical numbers, as Rogers is costumed as Captain America and sent on a war-bonds tour; it's got a prison break, as the touring celebrity frees some multicultural P.O.W.s from the Nazis, and it's got a mythic smackdown, as Captain America squares off against Germanic evil genius Johann Schmidt (the hugely entertaining Hugo Weaving, mimicking documentarian Werner Herzog)." — Joe Williams, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Setting
"Though it begins and ends with a scene or two in the present, as directed by Joe Johnston from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, 'Captain America' is first and foremost an origins story. Almost half of the film's running time elapses before Rogers gets any kind of power at all, and though its elements are awfully familiar, it's the most involving part of the film because it takes advantage of Evans' performance. These early-days sections are so old-fashioned that, if you take away the copious special effects, watching 'Captain America' feels akin to watching the venerable 1950s television version of 'Superman' starring George Reeves. Buttons are pushed, dials are turned, secret passwords are uttered and lights blink, just like they did way back when." — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times Check out everything we've got on "Captain America: The First Avenger."

DJ Khaled Denies Rick Ross/ Young Jeezy Beef

'Beef ... we're here to get money. We're here to make great music,' Khaled tells MTV News.
By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Rob Markman

DJ Khaled just released his fifth album, We the Best Forever, which features contributions by Rick Ross and Young Jeezy. But not on the same track, which shouldn't be surprising considering the two rappers have an ongoing feud. But according to DJ Khaled, that is no longer the case.

"They don't have a beef," Khaled vehemently told MTV News. "That's people that would probably try to stir things up that have a beef. First of all, Ross is my brother. Jeezy is a great friend of mine. And if they did, I would be the guy in the middle [that would] be like, 'Stop!' That's just what I do. Beef ... we're here to get money. We're here to make great music. What's beef gon' do? But if somebody disrespects you and try you, you gotta do what you gotta do. It is what it is. But we hope it don't come to that in life. And that's just in any situation."

Despite the Miami DJ and producer's assertions that there is no friction between Jeezy and Rozay, the relationship between the two rappers can be described as cold at best. It began in August last year when Jeezy released the freestyle "Death B4 Dishonor." Rapping over the instrumental to Ross' hit "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)," many speculated the lines "How you blowin' money fast?/ You don't know the crew/ Oh, you part of the fam?/ Sh--, I never knew," were aimed at Ross.

However, the Snowman said that was not the case. Since then, both have taken jabs at each other in song and in the press. Then in November 2010, footage appeared of Jeezy in Miami rhetorically saying, "Where is your favorite rapper at?" when he was asked about Ross. To this Ross told U.K. DJ Tim Westwood, "If you really have an issue, put it on the table and handle it like a G."

Nevertheless, Khaled, who has had his own issues with 50 Cent, is so confident in his skills at musical diplomacy that he feels he could get the Snowman and Rozay on a song together right now.

"I've done it plenty of times already," Khaled, who featured both Ross and Jeezy on two songs ("Fed Up," "Put Your Hands Up") from his 2010 album Victory, said. "Of course I could. You want me to go make one, no problem I'll go do it. Matter of fact, I'll do it just for the fun of it. But absolutely I can do that. Ross is my brother, and Jeezy is my brother. That ain't no problem, that's easy."

While hip-hop heads are eyeing the throne, more details are being revealed about Drake's highly anticipated sophomore album, Take Care. After releasing a handful of songs via his blog (including "Marvin's Room" and "Dreams Money Can Buy"), the Toronto rapper and YMCMB representative reportedly will soon be dropping his new album's proper lead single "Headlines" and has also divulged info about a few more songs on the project.

Drake let loose an obvious clue about his official single with a tweet on July 18 that read simply, "Headlines." On Thursday, it was confirmed that there is a song called "Headlines" and it was produced by longtime Drake producers and collaborators Matthew "Boi-1da" Samuels and Noah "40" Shebib, according to HipHopDX.

Ironically, despite all the speculation on what his new album's first single will be, Drake expressed his disdain of single tracks. "I hate singles. ... With this album, I want to tell a whole story," Drake told Rolling Stone. "I don't want people to just hear a piece and judge the album on that."

In the interview, conducted in the Toronto studio where he is recording the album, Drake revealed the titles to three songs: "Shot for Me," "Free Spirit" and "The Real Her." "Free Spirit" features Rick Ross, and "The Real Her" features Drake's Young Money benefactor Lil Wayne. Drake also mentioned his desire to collaborate with an eclectic mix of musicians for Take Care, including R&B crooner Abel Tesfaye of the Weeknd, storied hip-hop producer DJ Premier, and indie rockers Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine's and producer Jamie Smith of the xx.

Take Care is due in stores October 24, which happens to be Drake's birthday.

Tyler, The Creator Thinks His VMA Rivals 'Suck'

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 08:07 AM PDT

'If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I'm gonna be mad because they all suck -- except for Adele's,' Tyler tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

Tyler The Creator
Photo: MTV News

Tyler, the Creator bites his tongue for no one. Some call him evil, others, unbelievable. So when asked about his feelings on his 2011 MTV VMA Video of the Year nomination, Tyler simply spoke his mind. "I'm really excited, shout out to Ron Artest. If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I'm gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele's," he told MTV News.

The Odd Future standout's self-directed "Yonkers" video is up against Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise," Bruno Mars' "Grenade" and Katy Perry's "Firework." The "Yonkers" clip, which was uploaded to the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All's YouTube page back in February, has since racked up 15 million views. Most noted for the scene in which the rapper hangs himself in the end, the "Yonkers" video has become one of the most talked about and debated works of the year. It earned Tyler a Best New Artist nom as well.

While the Cali rapper/producer/director is more respectful of his fellow Best New Artist nominees, he still wants to win that one too. Up against indie poppers Foster the People ("Pumped Up Kicks"), Big Sean ("My Last"), Kreayshawn ("Gucci Gucci") and Wiz Khalifa ("Black and Yellow"), Tyler will let his guard down just a bit in this category. "The Best New Artist thing, that's cool. Wiz is a really good dude and I've been a fan of his music, so if he wins I'll be pretty excited. I wanna win that for sure, but Wiz is awesome, I've been listening to him since '08," he said. "Even Kreayshawn, she's cool. So if she wins that too, I'll be pretty stoked. But you know, I wanna win, I'm just gonna keep it 100."

Snagging a VMA has been a goal of the "Sandwitches" MC for months. He has been tweeting feverishly about it, but even he was surprised when he actually heard the nominations announcement. After the group manager called the entire OFWGKTA to a meeting, Tyler grew weary. "We were like, 'What the f--- does he have us here for?' We were ready to leave. Then the VMA nomination thing came on and I was on my phone and I was like, 'Oh crap I want to see what wack videos they have this time,' " Tyler recalled of his skepticism before being hit with the news. "Then they said my name and was talkin' about it and I was like 'What the hell?' I kinda stopped breathing, I was just sitting there. I was kinda shaking. I don't know, it was surreal."

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Adele Is 'Flabbergasted' By Seven VMA Nominations

Earlier this week, Adele continued her march toward complete and utter global domination when she picked up seven Video Music Awards nominations, for her hit "Rolling in the Deep," including nods for Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.

That tally tied the British belter with Kanye West for the second-most VMA noms this year (they both trail Katy Perry, who leads with nine), and only further cemented her status as 2011's biggest breakout star. And so, on Friday (July 22), she took her to blog ... not only to express her excitement about the nominations, but also to reveal her rather interesting celebratory plans.

"Flabbergasted about the VMA nominations! Thank you, thank you MTV!" Adele wrote in a post. "I'm thinking about releasing a range of chairs to celebrate!"

We'd totally buy a set. And though she didn't comment on her chances of winning a Moonman (which, despite the fact that she's up against heavy hitters like Perry, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears, we've got to say, are pretty good), Adele did write that she's already looking to another part of the VMA show — the blockbuster performances.

"I can't wait to see everyone's performances. If they're anything like the last couple years it's gonna be so exciting," she wrote. "Huge props to Sam Brown, the director of 'Rolling in the Deep!' "

VMA Nominee Leader Katy Perry, By The Numbers

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 09:27 AM PDT

It's not just those nine VMA nods — it's been a record-setting year for Katy.
By Gil Kaufman

There's no other way to say it: Katy Perry is having a moment. Actually, she's having 525,600 moments, as in 365 days of record-smashing, parent-upsetting, whipped cream-spurting, alien-loving, Indian wedding-having minutes of awesomeness.

And what better way to top it off than with a field-leading nine MTV Video Music Award nominations? Perry leads this year's field, as well she should, given that her clips for such hits as "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," "Teenage Dream," "Firework" and "E.T." have become modern classics and racked up millions of online views.

But the year has been about a whole lot more than gummy video goodness, so we decided to take a look back and crunch some numbers on the Year in Katy:

Explore our "Katy Perry: By The Numbers" infographic:

4 million: Number of digital copies Perry's "E.T." has sold so far. In fact, it joins her hits "California Gurls," "Firework," "Hot N Cold" and "I Kissed a Girl" in reaching that mark.

48: That's the record Perry shattered for the most consecutive weeks with a single inside the top 10, beating out Swedish popsters Ace of Base.

2: Number of beefs Perry got into with Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. Though it was quickly squashed, for a minute it seemed as if the former Christian singer had dissed Gaga's "Alejandro" video for its use of religious imagery.

Months later, Perry denied taking a swipe at Spears over product placement in Britney's "Hold it Against Me" video.

4: Perry came this close to making history this summer when it looked like "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" would become the fifth single from Teenage Dream to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. If she had hit the top (she stalled, ironically at #4), she would have become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off the same album and the first artist of either gender to do it since Michael Jackson (in the period between 1987 and 1988).

2: Number of times Perry has appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine since Teenage Dream came out.

17: Shots of Perry's nearly naked rear end in the "California Gurls" video. (Not like we sat there and counted or anything.)

Billions: Amount of Gummi Bears that Perry offended when she cast some nude, crude and middle-finger-flipping rude candy bears in the "Gurls" video.

9: record-setting number of weeks Eminem's Recovery would have spent at #1 had Teenage Dream not rained on its parade.

0: Total number of celebrities besides Perry who have had their "Sesame Street" bits shelved because they showed too much cleavage.

2: Number of elephants (Laxmi and Mala) involved in Perry and Russell Brand's wedding in India in October. Also involved in the wedding? Jugglers, acrobats, a drum troupe and traditional Indian Rajasthani folk singers and dancers.

0: Number of famous couples besides Perry and Brand who have flirted and gone on a date and then gotten married after being introduced at the VMAs.

Rihanna And Jay-Z Run The Town In Concert

'This is the Loud tour, so don't try to act all cute,' Rihanna demanded of her audience at the Izod Center.

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — With her perfect legs supported by hot pink stilettos, Rihanna entered the stage dressed in a vibrant blue dress with a very important message: "I want you to make me feel like I'm the only girl in the world," which she sang in perfect harmony as screams filled the Izod Center in New Jersey Thursday night. Following Kanye West's surprise appearance for her encore on Tuesday night on Long Island, many were wondering if Rihanna had something special in store this time around too.

As it turned out, there was a huge surprise: Jay-Z emerged from underneath the stage for Rihanna's encore, joining her for "Run This Town," and of course, "Umbrella." The whole arena shook as Rihanna laughed, smirked and pranced around the stage with the legendary rapper, whose new collaboration album with Kanye West, Watch the Throne, is set to drop in August.

Prior to the stage nearly collapsing with star power, Rihanna held her own quite remarkably.

With her magenta (or is it fuchsia?) Whitney Houston-style hairdo, the 23-year-old pop star spent two hours proving her diva abilities, singing every one of her hits and introducing significantly more advanced choreography than we've seen in tours past. Making use of pyrotechnics, steam generators, pink army tanks, and set pieces that would even turn the heads of Britney and Madonna, the Loud tour proved to be up to standard with today's greatest pop acts.

During "S&M," Rihanna put on a VMA stage-worthy performance where the gyrating of her hips reached a new peak while a female dancer had her tied up in long white ropes and hands reached for her body from below the stage.

Amidst performing her immense catalog of hits ("Live Your Life," "Shut Up and Drive," "Hard," "What's My Name," "Rude Boy" and "Don't Stop the Music," just to name a few), Rihanna's team crafted a beautiful set of erotically charged videos accompanied by music and sound effects that blasted through every eardrum in the room, hence the tour's title.

"This is the Loud tour, so don't try to act all cute," Rihanna told fans. "New Jersey, make some f---ing noise!"

The sole opening act, up-and-coming rapper J. Cole (Cee Lo Green had to drop out of the tour last month), didn't disappoint, bouncing around the stage with smooth verses to his catchy beats.

Dark days seem to be a thing of the past for Demi Lovato. Just a week after topping the iTunes chart with her power ballad "Skyscraper," the 18-year-old Disney starlet appeared ready to get back into the swing of things by catching up with some of her loyal Lovatics during a live chat with fans. On Thursday night, the comeback kid answered a number of questions about her new single and touring plans and made a special announcement regarding her forthcoming album.

"I hope you're screaming and jumping down in your room right now because I'm about to tell you when my album is releasing," a giddy Lovato said from a Los Angeles recording studio, before revealing the September 20 release date.

When asked about details regarding the sound of the project, the singer admitted she's left behind her days of pop rock to focus more on a vibe that will showcase her vocals, as heard on "Skyscraper," adding, "I'm feeling really, really comfortable on what we have so far."

With "about 20-something" new tracks already recorded, it's expected that the teen star will hit the road for a tour to promote the album. Lovato dropped a few sly hints, saying, "If I was to tour, I would announce it soon and maybe, possibly, I'm in the works of putting together a tour. Maybe. And maybe it'll be all around the world. I don't know. I'm just saying."

Lovato also opened up about her Mark Pellington-directed visual for "Skyscraper," where she emotionally belts out the tune in a bright desert. "I had to go to that place in my mind that I was in when I recorded the song, so it was very emotional. It was actually a very intimate set. There wasn't very many people there. We took a plane with about 15 people and that was it. We went to the middle of a desert and shot this music video. ... It turns out to be my favorite video I've done and hopefully you guys feel the same."

Like teen counterpart Selena Gomez, Lovato has decided to tap into her heritage by recording a Spanish-language version of her new song "Skyscraper."

Pitbull, Marc Anthony Brave Heat In 'Rain Over Me' Video

Miami MC joined by Salsa crooner in sexy new clip for Pit's summer-ready jam.

It's a good time to be Pitbull. When he's not throwing parties with Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer in his "Give Me Everything" video, Pit is busy helping Marc Anthony find his groove in the sexy, sleek new "Rain Over Me" video.

The single "Rain Over Me" is off the rapper's Planet Pit album, which dropped earlier this summer. In the clip, VMA-nominated Pitbull and newly separated Marc Anthony take the party to the only place where it doesn't rain — the desert.

So, sure it doesn't rain in the desert, but well-tailored suits and pretty ladies (and some product placement) are aplenty in the barren setting. While the guys hang outside in the sweltering heat amid a shack-style location, a group of ladies swim around in a pool elsewhere trying to keep cool as the song's hot beats play in the background.

The conclusion seems to be that if you party hard enough in the desert — and look cool while doing it — you can eventually make it rain. The duo not enjoy the company of beautiful ladies, they eventually find themselves drenched. And there's really no better way to cool off after all that time in the sun.

"Rain Over Me" is just the latest summer jam from the Miami rapper. He recently spoke to MTV News about what makes the perfect summer tune. "People need to escape from everything that's going on. And ... if they're going to spend the last $20 they made — and they only made $50 for the week — they want to spend it having a good time, not running into drama," he said. "So I'm more than blessed to be a part of this summer and the great music out there."

And "Rain Over Me" isn't the first time Pitbull has collaborated with someone in the former Lopez-Anthony household. Earlier this year, he found chart success with J.Lo on her equally club-ready hit "On the Floor."

Kelly Clarkson Promises New Single In September

Singer tweets that 'it's a huge bummer waiting' but fans can expect new music soon.

By now, Kelly Clarkson fans have gotten used to the hurry-up-and-wait status of her new album. Release dates for singles have come and gone, her frustration about the long release process has flared at times and a slow trickle of never-before-heard songs has leaked online over the past month.

But Clarkson gave fans reason to hope on Thursday when she posted a series of tweets that made it sound as if her eagerly anticipated fifth album is getting closer to seeing the light of day. Still, as has frequently been the case with Clarkson lately, it was a mix of good and bad news.

"Also, just found out my single is hitting radio in August!" she tweeted Thursday afternoon. "Woohoo! It's sounds great as well! Can't wait for y'all to hear it!" Fans were understandably excited about the imminent release of the unnamed tune but an hour later, Clarkson said she may have misspoken a bit. "Okay please do not get angry but it might be September for my single," she wrote. "My calendar was messed up! I'm so sorry! BUT it might be late August! It's a huge bummer waiting but I promise it'll be worth it! Stupid technology!!"

Though disappointed, fans told Clarkson it was no biggie, saying it was worth the wait. "If people can wait till Nov. for 'Breaking Dawn,' I bet they can wait a few months for your new single," one fan wrote.

The original "American Idol," who at one point described the new songs as "Garbage-meets-pop-meets-Muse," has long expressed her desire to go in a more rock direction and she appeared headed that way on the follow-up to 2009's All I Ever Wanted." In October, Clarkson told fans on Twitter that she expected a single out by early 2011, teased a pair of duets with unnamed co-singers and said it might include two songs by her musical director and "Never Again" co-writer Jason Halbert.

The album obviously missed its initial late-2010 release date, and by February Clarkson was talking up other influences, such as Prince, Tina Turner, Radiohead, Sheryl Crow and Aretha Franklin, and hitting the studio with producer Rodney Jerkins. In early February she announced, with a bit of consternation, that the ywet-untitled album was finished, but had been pushed back until September. Then, earlier this month, three songs that are reportedly slated for the album leaked, just a week after another new tune, the rocking, "Let Me Down,"surfaced online.

The new songs, which were quickly scrubbed from the Internet, included the angsty "Let Me Down," the ballad "Forgive You" and the pop rocker "Dumb + Dumb = You."
