'Friends With Benefits' Stars Weren't 'Begging To Be Naked'

'When I found out Mila was going to be naked, I was really sort of like, 'Ewww, gross,' ' Justin Timberlake jokes to MTV News.

In case you've missed them, Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis have been involved in a few very clever promotions for their upcoming romantic comedy "Friends With Benefits." There was their mutual groping at the MTV Movie Awards in June followed by a friendly public service announcement-style video touting the merits of a friends-with-benefits arrangement.

And if those efforts haven't already inspired you to see the film when it opens this weekend, perhaps the knowledge that the two attractive actors spend a lot of their screen time totally naked will increase a few ticket sales.

Speaking about said nude scenes — of which there are several that feature a bare Timberlake bottom — the two stars admitted to MTV News that however comfortable they may be with their bodies in private, they weren't dying to disrobe on camera.

"I wasn't begging [to be naked]," Timberlake said. "When I found out Mila was going to be naked, I was really sort of like, 'Ewww, gross,' " he joked. "But I guess if that's what it takes to make the movie, then I'll do it."

"[You are] such a hard worker," Kunis said, playing along with Timberlake's joke. "You're committed."

"I know. I am a hard worker," Timberlake assured us.

"He genuinely believes that [my being naked] was gross," Kunis added seriously.

"Shut up," Timberlake shot back playfully. "We had a lot of fun making the movie," he said sincerely. "[But] none of us were begging to be naked."

After 'Deathly Hallows,' Tom Felton Goes From 'Potter' To Primates

Actor will hit the big screen again in next month's 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes,' with a spate of big-screen parts on the horizon.

Tom Felton may be giving up his bleached-blond Draco Malfoy hair color, but he's not giving up his "Harry Potter" character's bad attitude just yet.

As "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" was breaking box-office records and opening to critical acclaim over the weekend, Felton was already looking forward to his first post-"Potter" film, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which hits theaters on August 5. And from what he's told MTV News about the movie's plot, his "Apes" character has a few things in common with Draco.

"My character, he works at a primate facility — I can reveal that — in which ... he's not the nicest of people looking after these lovely creatures," Felton teased.

But that's not the only project Felton is gearing up for: He finished filming "The Apparition" last year, a thriller that also stars "Twilight" actress Ashley Greene and "Captain America: The First Avenger" actor Sebastian Stan. While "Apparition" isn't due out until sometime in 2012, the movie is already earning some serious buzz in the online fan communities because it brings together two major movie franchises.

Felton has also filmed the sports flick "From the Rough" with Taraji P. Henson and Justin Chon and director Pierre Bagley. Add to that docket two war movies: "Grace and Danger" is currently in pre-production and "Evac" is on the horizon.

With films like "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "The Apparition" on the way, Felton seems to be positioning himself as a viable big-screen presence post-"Potter." But he seemed genuinely surprise that the opportunity to make another big-budget movie had come so quickly after the end of "Potter."

"It was very exciting for me to go from 'Harry Potter' on to ['Rise of the Planet of the Apes']," he told MTV News. "I didn't expect to go on to that class of set straight away, so it was hugely exciting. We had a great time making it."

Soundgarden Triumph In Red Rocks Reunion Show

Grunge gods prove they can still shred after 14-year split.

MORRISON, Colorado — An ecstatic-looking Chris Cornell gazed over the Red Rocks Amphitheater on Monday night and declared, "We're Soundgarden, and we're back."

Setting off the night with "Searching with My Good Eye Closed" from 1991's Badmotorfinger and the Grammy-winning "Spoonman," one of their first big hits, the recently reunited grunge gods quickly cleared any doubts about whether they still had it, even after 14 years apart. "We're doing this because of you," Cornell professed.

After the frontman encouraged the crowd to "smoke it all so you don't get busted on the way home," the band unleashed "Jesus Christ Pose," with Matt Cameron's pummeling of the drums reminding everyone that while he's served as drummer for Pearl Jam since Soundgarden's 1997 breakup, it was his work with tonight's headliner that made him sought after.

The band then allowed the audience to take a breath, slowing down the already-sleepy "Blow Up the Outside World." The song's fade out had the sold-out crowd of 9,400 chanting in unison.

Cornell reveled at the venue his reformed group had taken on. "We played here before, and maybe a little bit was lost on us," he said. "It's f---ing amazing." Between songs, he coaxed attendees to shriek just for the hell of it, giving props to the amphitheater's legendary acoustics. "This big rock over here and this one over there," he said, referencing the two giant stones that flank the seating area, "it acts like a speaker, funnels down to my head. It's trippy."

The Seattle foursome revisited their breakthrough album, Superunknown, for three in row, following "The Day I Tried to Live" with "My Wave" and "Fell on Black Days." They went all the way back to their Screaming Life/Fopp EP for "Nothing to Say" and shredded eardrums with "Rusty Cage." For "Outshined," Cornell dropped his guitar in favor of a microphone stand as his temporary weapon of choice, alternately waving it and pounding it into the stage.

As seasoned bands often do, Soundgarden changed up some of their biggest hits when most fans probably would have preferred the radio version. And while Cornell shied away from some of the notes on the choruses of "Black Hole Sun" and "Pretty Noose," it seems he was saving his pipes for the set-ending fan favorite "Slaves & Bulldozers." Having admirably conquered the night's 20-plus selections, Cornell explored the heights of his iconic wail without hesitation.

The band — which released its first-ever live album, Live on the I-5, earlier this year — is currently crafting its first studio LP since 1996. Though nothing new was debuted during Monday night's hit parade, fans can be hopeful that they channel the passion they displayed for their old material.

Ja Rule Sentenced To 28 Months For Tax Troubles

Incarcerated rapper gets added time for failing to file with the IRS.
By Rob Markman

As if getting hit with a two-year jail bid wasn't enough, rapper Ja Rule just got some more time tacked onto his current sentence. On Monday (July 18), Rule (born Jeffrey Atkins) was sentenced to 28 months in prison to run concurrent with his existing sentence for failing to file tax returns with the IRS for more than $1.1 million in taxes.

Rule's attorney, Stacey Richman, told MTV News she is grateful the court didn't judge the rapper on his public persona. "We were all very concerned about what the potentials were, and we think that the outcome was very fair and that the court took him into account as an individual, and we appreciate that tremendously," she said.

In December 2010, Rule pleaded guilty to attempted gun possession stemming from a 2007 arrest. The 35-year old MC turned himself in June 8 to begin the bid, and got hit with the additional time Monday in a New Jersey federal court. The sentence was the result of Ja's March admission of his failure to file for money earned from 2004 to 2006.

The former Murder Inc. rapper commented on his tax troubles when he appeared on MTV's "RapFix Live" in April. "Let me just clear this up for people who think that Ja Rule doesn't pay taxes: bullsh--," the rapper told MTV News' Sway Calloway. "Ja Rule pays plenty of taxes, millions of dollars in taxes. I owed them a little bit more. I had some issues when the whole Murder Inc. thing went down with my accountant, and she had some federal issues with the boys herself for doing some things, so I fell into a few issues there, but it's not an issue like that. That's being taken care of."

When handing down the sentence, U.S. Judge Patty Shwartz said, "Taxpayers do not have the luxury of deciding whether to comply with the laws."

What the added time means for Rule is that, in theory, he will serve a full 28 months regardless whether his current New York state sentence ends early. If the rapper ends up serving the entire 24 months of his current incarceration, he will owe the government the extra four months. However, "good behavior" creates the possibility of a shorter federal sentence.

Pia Toscano Says 'This Time' Isn't 'Just A Breakup Song'

'American Idol' alum says she's well into recording her yet-untitled, R&B-flavored debut.
By Gil Kaufman

You can't blame Pia Toscano for being angry. The "American Idol" season 10 finalist was shockingly bumped from the competition in ninth place, though many viewers and experts suspected it was not the last time they would see — or hear from — the raven-haired singer.

After Toscano scored a major-label deal with Interscope Records — making her the first ninth-place eliminee in "Idol" history to pull off such a feat — the 22-year-old New Yorker made it clear on her first single, "This Time," that she's determined to do things her way.

"The song could pertain to 'American Idol' and my journey on the show," Toscano told MTV News about the double meaning some fans and critics have found in the empowerment anthem's lyrics about shaking off a guy (or a voting bloc) who did her wrong. "It's a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, and it's not just a breakup song."

The tune, with a heavy R&B beat and a twinge of twang that might not be out of place in a Carrie Underwood foot-stomper, was written by Ester Dean, who has made similarly smart anthems for Rihanna ("S&M," "Rude Boy") and Nicki Minaj ("Superbass").

Though she said no specific breakup in her past inspired the tune, Toscano — who is reportedly dating "Dancing With the Stars" pro Mark Ballas — said she felt like it suited her well and might just reflect on some things that have happened to her in the past. "I can 100 percent relate to it whether it's about a relationship or my journey on 'Idol,' " Toscano said as she navigated her way through an airport on her way to an Idols Live! Tour date in Oklahoma City.

What's ironic about the song is that Underwood-esque country twang mixed with an R&B backbeat, which gives it a sound like the kind of contemporary pop/country tunes you might expect from "Idol" runner-up Lauren Alaina. In it, she sings that she's "mad as hell, ain't gonna take it no more" and that she's "gonna free herself."

"This time, I'm gonna do it my way/ This time, I'm finding out the hard way," Toscano sings on the chorus.

The former makeup artist said that's just a preview of the range of sounds you can expect to hear on her yet-untitled debut, due in the fall. "It's not just one thing, not pop or R&B," she said, promising that "This Time" is an anomaly and she won't be encroaching on Alaina's or winner Scotty McCreery's country airspace.

"It will be pop with an R&B influence, with an edge," she said of the album. "It will be soulful and powerful."

Shaggy Proves 'Dancehall Music Is Alive' At Hometown Show

For diamond-selling dancehall artist Shaggy, the homecoming festivities he experienced over the weekend in Jamaica were as sweet as his new single "Sugar Cane."

On Saturday, "Mr. Boombastic" took his melodic reggae sounds back to the island that made him famous, performing a free show in front of his fellow Jamaicans with the assistance of a few other notable reggae stars. The concert, called "Shaggy and Friends," came on the heels of the release of his 10th studio album, Summer in Kingston.

"It's home. This is my hometown. This is where I was born, where I was raised," Shaggy told MTV News following the performance. "This is where I currently live. I just really wanted the international audience to come in and just see what we're really about. This dancehall music is alive, this reggae music is alive. There's an audience here."

Hundreds of fans lined Knutsford Boulevard starting at 7 p.m. for the show, which got under way a few hours later. The smell of Jamaican jerk and a certain green leaf wafted through the humid air as Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, Chino, Di Genius, Agent Sasco, Christopher Martin, Leftside, QQ and others warmed up the stage for Shaggy.

According to producer Di Genius, the evening was another shining moment in the superstar's music career. "To have such a huge show like this in the streets of Jamaica is definitely groundbreaking, but it goes hand-in-hand with the type of artist that [Shaggy is]," Genius said. "Shaggy has been breaking ground throughout the years. Shaggy is a 9 million-selling dancehall artist, and that's something that's really not normal. Definitely a groundbreaking event for the country."

The day prior, Shaggy capped a week of promotional events to support his "feel-good album," as he described it, with a performance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." Shaggy debuted the clip for his crossover single "Sugar Cane" as the intro to Saturday's show. Starting this week, Shaggy will embark on an international run to further support the album, but for the reggae legend, it's the more natural moments such as this weekend's epic concert that define him as an artist.

"This is home," Shaggy declared. "And you're nowhere unless you're respected at home."

Sway's a.m. takeover has begun.

On Monday (July 18), the MTV News correspondent broadcast his first episode of "Sway in the Morning" on Sirius XM's Shade 45, and in addition to playing hip-hop's hottest tunes, he conducted interviews with Bun B, Lupe Fiasco, Diggy Simmons, Estelle and "Entourage" actor Jerry Ferrara; even Eminem called in to toast the new host.

"You played such a vital part in my career and such a big role in hip-hop, we're just happy to have you," Eminem, who owns Shade 45, said to Sway. But when Calloway asked for a freestyle, Em joked, "It might be dial tone."

Sway also unearthed an old interview that he conducted with Em, dating back to when the rapper first signed with Dr. Dre. 'When Em got signed, he came to our house in L.A., and he was just like, 'Man, I got this opportunity with Dre,' " Sway recalled of his and King Tech's earlier interactions with Em on their legendary on-air "Wake Up Show" in the late 1990s. "Then we had him come up on the radio show to make that announcement and he busted a freestyle, so we played that segment."

That wasn't all for the debut broadcast: Sway, who co-hosted with Houston on-air personality Devi Dev, played a portion of a never-before-aired interview with the late Tupac Shakur from the set of his "How Do U Want It" video. In the clip, 'Pac expresses his love for Oakland and downplays the East Coast/ West Coast rivalry of the mid-1990s. "I felt like whatever I am, the Bay Area had something to do with making. So if I'm bad, they had something to do with making me. If I'm good, then they had something to do with making me," 'Pac says before showing love to the various cities where he spent his formative years. "Between the East Coast, the Bay Area, L.A. and Baltimore, those places made me."

"All in all, it was good," Sway told us after the show wrapped on Monday. "We played a lot of hip-hop music and made a good relationship [with the listeners]. I'm going to try to tie in all of these worlds: MTV, Shade 45, pop, politics, culture, music, all of that. At the end of the day, that's the vision for the show."

'Avengers' Producer Jon Favreau Reveals His Marvel Role

'My involvement is just to be as supportive as I can be,' former 'Iron Man' director tells MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian

When Jon Favreau bowed out of the "Iron Man" franchise in December, the filmmaker made clear he remained on good terms with Marvel execs and that he'd stay within the studio family as an executive producer on the upcoming superhero all-star flick, "The Avengers."

But with Favreau busy with directorial duties on the alien-Western hybrid "Cowboys & Aliens" and prep work on "Magic Kingdom," his Disney World-set family picture, it remained to be seen how involved he'd be with "Avengers," which kicked off filming in April. Now, as the "Avengers" teaser trailer has leaked (after appearing in the post-credits sequence of "Captain America") and fans have gotten their first look at what director Joss Whedon has done with that collection of superheroes, we're also getting an idea of Favreau's role in the action.

"My involvement is just to be as supportive as I can be. Most of the cast is people that came onboard to work with me on the 'Iron Man' film, so I feel a sense of responsibility to them. I really hope it works out," Favreau told MTV News while promoting "Cowboys & Aliens." "I'm not in the trenches with them and I'm not making creative decisions on their behalf, but I'm completely available and of service."

That's a far cry from how fans might have thought things would play out back in 2008, when Favreau said he'd be open to directing "Avengers." But in October 2009, MTV News broke the news he wouldn't be helming the film, and after "Iron Man 2" hit theaters last year, he ceded directorial duties on that franchise to Shane Black. These days, Favreau said Whedon is a far better choice to direct "Avengers" than he ever would be.

"They have Joss Whedon, who's a very talented guy and is really good with ensembles and really understands the superhero genre better than I do," Favreau explained. "I understand 'Iron Man' very, very well, especially the 'Iron Man' movie and the cast and the characters all built to one thing. But there are other characters that I don't know. Each filmmaker had a different approach to how they went about it — 'Captain America' is coming out, 'Thor.' The combining of all those things is going to be its own thing in and of itself that Joss has embraced and wrote the script. I expect big things."

Ricky Bell recalls to MTV News 'going to the mansion and seeing him skip down the stairs.'
By Rob Markman

New Edition

New Edition are fast approaching 30 years in the music biz, and the Boston boys have a ton of memories since dropping their debut album, Candy Girl, in 1983.

For Johnny Gill, his favorite came in 1990 when NE reunited on the MTV Video Music Awards; for Ralph Tresvant, his best memory came after hearing the group's song on the radio for the first time. Ricky Bell, nodded in agreement, but then recalled another special time — meeting the King of Pop.

"I guess Ralph took my number one, but number two would probably be meeting Michael Jackson, being invited to his house. Going to the mansion and seeing him skip down the stairs," Bell told MTV News before the group performed at DJ Cassidy's 30th birthday party in New York City on July 6. "Just to meet someone, that icon who inspired you, is a moment I'll never forget."

New Edition — which includes Bobby Brown, Tresvant, Gill, Bell, Ronnie DeVoe and Michael Bivins — are in the middle of a reunion run after performing in New Orleans at the 2011 Essence Music Festival. In addition to a number of shows they are performing together, NE also have a new album in the works, and if they have it their way, they will continue to add on to three decades' worth of memorable moments.

For Brown, though, it will always start at the beginning. "For me, 30 years would probably be just meeting them," he said of his bandmates. "Meeting them and being able to have friends in my life and have brothers in my life that weren't blood brothers, but they were my brothers and they took care of me."

Red Hot Chili Peppers Reveal Origins Of 'Rain Dance Maggie'

New single started life as an hour-long jam session, Anthony Kiedis tells MTV News.
By James Montgomery

On Friday, the Red Hot Chili Peppers officially ended their hiatus with the premiere of "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie," the first single from their upcoming I'm With You album.

About a month before the premiere of "Maggie," MTV News sat down with RHCP's Anthony Kiedis and Josh Klinghoffer in Venice, California, to talk about the band's new album (and the lengthy break that preceded it). We'll be rolling out more of the interview as we get closer to I'm With You's August 30 release date, but we've already given fans a taste of what they can expect, when Kiedis and Klinghoffer explained the genesis of the album's title.

And now, with "Maggie" officially out of the box, we figured it would be time to pull the curtain back on a second portion of the chat, in which Kiedis revealed the origins of the song itself — origins that began with an hour-long jam session and exactly one classic bass line.

"When I first heard ['Maggie'], I didn't know it would be a single. [But] I knew that I loved the jam," Kiedis explained. "My first recording of that, I don't think it had many vocals on it. It was kind of mostly instrumental, about an hour long. Flea brought it in as a very specific exercise to write a classic bass line. He woke up, had his tea, sat down: 'I'm going to write a classic bass line. You can't stop me.' Played his bass line until he felt it was cooked into a classic, brought it to us and said, 'This is Classic Number One.' On a good day, you just know if there's music to wrestle with and get with, and it was one of those moments."

So Kiedis sat down and listened to the track and was immediately struck by the propulsive groove Flea had laid down. And things just took off from there, with Klinghoffer adding a winging guitar line and drummer Chad Smith providing a loose, limber backbeat. But even if things were taking shape, Kiedis said he never thought "Maggie" would be anything more than a B-side. If that.

"I took it home and it felt so fun to listen to at length that I literally left it on in my driveway, opened the door and danced with the tree next to me for quite a while," he said. "I had no idea that it would even be a song, I just thought, 'Oh, this is a great dance track. Let's put it on as a B-side, [an] hour long.' And then, as fate would have it, people heard it, and they were like, 'Oh, that's your best thing right there. That's your best thing.' "

And so, eventually, "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" made the leap from jam to official first single. And now that it's out there, Kiedis knows he's going asked plenty of times just who this Maggie is. Unfortunately, he's not about to reveal his inspirations.

"It's just a collection of memories and people along the way that had maybe left my consciousness until I heard that music, and then they kind of came dancing back into my consciousness, and out the old pen onto the paper," he smiled. "Names have been changed to protect the innocent. Although there is a Maggie, I realized later. There's two Maggies, actually."

'Dark Knight Rises' Trailer Hits The Net!

Clip offers glimpse of villain Bane in action while Liam Neeson's Ra's Al Ghul resurfaces in voiceover.

In exactly one year and two days, the Dark Knight will rise for the last time under the direction of Christopher Nolan.

Fans flocking to the cinemas over the weekend to see "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" were lucky enough to catch the first teaser trailer of "The Dark Knight Rises," the final installment of Nolan's Batman trilogy. But now the official trailer has hit the Internet, teasing an apocalyptic conclusion to the beloved series.

The latest clip appropriately teases the two elements of "The Dark Knight Rises" that have fans already so riled up. First off, a voiceover by Liam Neeson's "Batman Begins" character, Ra's Al Ghul, implies the connection to the first Batman movie that moviegoers have long suspected.

"If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, then you become something else entirely," he whispers. "A legend, Mr. Wayne, a legend."

When we last saw Batman, he was going into hiding after the destruction caused by the Joker and Two-Face. But the Batman must rise, and in new footage from the trailer, it's Batman's old friend, Commissioner Gordon, who asks him to do so. "We were in this together, and then you were gone," says an incapacitated Gordon, played by Gary Oldman. "And now this evil rises. The Batman has to come back."

"This evil," the second key trailer element, seems to imply Bane, the new "Dark Knight" villain played by Tom Hardy. Several shots of Bane are mixed in with the final moments of the trailer, a follow-up to the previously released photo of the man who broke the Bat. Among these images is also the first shot of Christian Bale as Batman in "The Dark Knight Rises."

The final look in the trailer — Gotham City's skyscrapers crumbling down in a shape of the Bat symbol — hearkens back to the poster released last week. It certainly seems to imply that Gotham City might be destroyed while the Dark Knight does rise.

There are still several characters left unseen, though, including Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard in presumed there-must-be-more-to-it-than-that roles. The Neeson voiceover opens up a whole new can of worms when it comes to the theory that Cotillard is actually playing Ra's Al Ghul's daughter, Talia Al Ghul, though whether that concept comes to fruition remains to be seen.

'Harry Potter' Star Emma Watson Will Be Back Onscreen Soon

We hope Emma Watson has already digested her post-"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" brunch. Because now that she's finished the project that virtually defined a decade of her life, the actress has plenty to look forward to.

The 21-year-old starlet did just a few non-"Potter" acting roles during her time with the franchise, only separating herself from Hermione long enough to star in the 2007 BBC film "Ballet Shoes" and lend her voice to 2008's "Tales of Despereaux." Now, she has wrapped her first two post-"Potter" films and is excited for people to see her outside of a "Harry Potter" capacity.

Up first is the Michelle Williams-starring adaptation of "My Week With Marilyn," based on Laurence Olivier's assistant's account of spending time with Marilyn Monroe (Williams) while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl." Watson plays a character named Lucy who goes on a few dates with leading man Eddie Redmayne. It's a minor role for a small film (which is slated for release this November), but it's garnering a lot of attention because of Watson's involvement.

"I've seen a trailer for it. It looks pretty amazing," Watson told MTV News at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. "I mean, Michelle is an incredible actress, and Eddie Redmayne is also in it, so he did a great job."

But her upcoming film that's getting the most buzz is the Summit Entertainment adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's coming-of-age novel, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." Watson plays Sam, the love interest of main character Charlie (played by Logan Lerman). It wrapped shooting several weeks ago, and Watson told us at the Movie Awards that the expectation was to turn it around and get it released quickly.

"It's so funny because I never thought I'd make another sort of high school-esque movie, and here I am in this coming-of-age, American teen [movie]," she said. "But it's very witty, and it's very funny and it's very moving, so I'm excited."

'Harry Potter' Box Office: How High Will It Go?

Film experts weigh in on how 'Deathly Hallows, Part 2' blockbuster finale is likely to fare in the long run.
By Eric Ditzian

There was little doubt that when the "Harry Potter" franchise finally came to a close after a decade-long presence at the multiplex, it would do so in epically lucrative fashion. But only when "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" actually began lighting up screens last Thursday at midnight did the true extent of its box-office power become clear: The film raked in a record $43.5 million at those early screenings and ended up shattering the three-day opening record of "The Dark Knight."

"While I assumed it would have the best 'Harry Potter' debut of all time, I wasn't quite sold on the fact that it could eclipse the 'Dark Knight' record, as none of the previous films, although highly successful, have ever approached that staggering number, despite having one of the most rabid fanbases filmdom has ever seen," said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. "This was monumental, as it seems everyone wanted to be a part of the discussion, everyone wanted to say goodbye to dear friends, and everyone wanted to experience the magic on the big screen one more time."

But not everyone wanted that magical experience in 3-D. While "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" benefited from the largest 3-D launch ever, according to Box Office Mojo, a majority of ticket buyers choose 2-D screenings, with just 43 percent of its total gross coming from 3-D screenings ("Transformers: Dark of the Moon," by comparison, earned 60 percent of its opening gross from 3-D showings). So, although "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" opening marks the second-biggest 3-D opening after "Alice in Wonderland," the last "Potter" film wasn't a 3-D must-see — it was a pop-culture must-see.

But insiders hardly predicted how intense the get-out-to-the-theater urge would be. Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com, pointed at social-networking sites as the key factor that raised awareness and drove ticket sales in the days leading up to release. The franchise's Facebook page added 870,000 new "likes" last week and Twitter registered more than 225,000 tweets in that time frame. "It clearly showed that even casual fans of the series were excited about the last installment," he said. "You can't break records with just die-hard fans — you have to expand the base. That's exactly what 'Part 2' did."

Just don't expect it to do what "Avatar" did. James Cameron's sci-fi flick built slowly and stayed at the top of the box office for weeks. "Deathly Hallows, Part 2," by contrast, experienced a hefty, 53 percent drop from Friday to Saturday, showing the film, like so many blockbusters before it, was a frontloaded theatrical event. While it will safely become the biggest movie of the summer, these wizards won't be able to compete with Cameron's big blue aliens, who drove "Avatar" to $2.8 billion worldwide.

"While the global grosses of 'Avatar' and 'Titanic' will likely be out of reach, expect 'Deathly Hallows, Part 2' to become the third-highest grossing movie ever once it exits theaters, and surpasses 'Lord of the Rings: Return of the King,' which hauled in $1.1 billion worldwide, " Bock said.

"Harry Potter," then, is on the verge of unseating "Star Wars" to become the most lucrative franchise in movie history. While some franchises struggle to maintain early success (see this summer's "Transformers" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" films), "Potter" has had no such problems. The example that Warner Bros. has set with its boy wizard is one that other studios wrapping up franchises would be wise to follow.

" 'Potter' fans grew up and didn't abandon the series, but that could happen with 'Twilight,' " Contrino said. "You have to mature at the same pace as your audience. The 'Potter' series grew darker and more compelling as its audience aged. It worked perfectly."

Jennifer Lopez And Marc Anthony: A Timeline

Fans were shocked when the news broke on Friday night that Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony announced they were ending their seven-year marriage.

The split came after the two worked closely together on this season of "American Idol" — on which they even performed a song together — and embarked on a South American adventure this summer for their upcoming reality talent competition, "¡Q'Viva! The Chosen."

The Latin stars first crossed paths in the 1990s and their relationship had a number of ups and downs, but the pair seemed steady, particularly in the last year, working on projects together and raising their twins, Max and Emme, born in 2008. Here, we look back on their union.

» Lopez and Anthony first met backstage at singer Paul Simon's 1998 Broadway show "The Capeman," in which Anthony starred. Lopez, then just a friend, co-starred in Anthony's video for the song "Contra La Corriente" and he returned the favor by recording the duet "No Me Ames" on her breakthrough 1999 album, On the 6. Both emerging stars, the pair dated briefly during that period in the late 1990s.

» Before meeting Anthony, Lopez was married to waiter Ojani Noa for a year (1997 to 1998), after which she moved on to a high-profile, nearly three-year relationship with Sean "Diddy" Combs. Lopez went on to marry former backup dancer Chris Judd in 2001, a union that lasted less than a year due to her subsequent relationship with actor Ben Affleck. The latter pair's very public relationship proved a model of overexposure and a wedding was called off just hours before it was scheduled to take place. Lopez was seen hanging with Anthony just months after the Affleck wedding was called off in September 2003.

» In the meantime, Anthony married former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres in May 2000 and the couple had two sons before separating in early 2002. They got back together later that year, only to divorce two years later.

» Lopez and Anthony married on June 5, 2004, less than a week after his divorce to Torres was finalized. Though the secret ceremony was small, they went public as a couple with a performance of "Escapemonos" at the 47th annual Grammy Awards in February 2005.

» Their personal and professional lives became very entwined once they took the plunge, including a duet for the soundtrack to Lopez's 2004 movie "Shall We Dance?" that was reportedly later axed from the album over fears that their relationship would overshadow the film in the way her liaison with Affleck sunk their notorious bomb, "Gigli."

» Lopez cast Anthony's daughter, Arianna, in the video for "Get Right," the first single from her 2005 album Rebirth.

The couple co-starred in 2007's "El Cantante," the story of troubled salsa legend Hector Lavoe. They also toured together that year.

» Their children, twins Emme Maribel Muniz and Maximillian David Muniz, were born on February 22, 2008.

» The pair made a splash at a number of official balls during President Barack Obama's inauguration in January 2009.

» After Lopez began her tenure as a judge on "American Idol," Anthony joined the show as well in the role of unofficial mentor to the young singers. The duo also performed together on the show.

» In May of this year, they announced their joint fashion line for Kohl's, which is slated to hit stores in September. A month later, they revealed their new reality talent competition, "¡Q'Viva! The Chosen," which will take them on a journey to Latin America to find new stars. According to Deadline Hollywood, the breakup will not affect the show, which has not yet completed its journey to 21 countries across Latin America. In fact, they haven't even filmed their parts yet and an unnamed spokesperson for the production said they are both still committed to the show.

» According to US Weekly, tongues began wagging about a possible breakup on July 9, when Lopez showed up without Anthony at the BAFTA Brits to Watch party in Los Angeles not wearing her wedding ring.

Lady Gaga Dishes On Sex, Drugs, Born This Way On Howard Stern

For months, Sirius radio host Howard Stern has been bellyaching about how Lady Gaga seemed to be talking to everyone except him. So, when the singer stopped in to chat on Monday morning (July 18), the notorious radio host made sure to make the most of it, indulging in one of his show's longest celebrity chats in recent memory, a nearly 90-minute ramble in which he got Gaga to talk about fame, fashion, sex, drugs and rock and roll.

For the most part, the interview hit many of the highlights of Gaga's now-legendary rise to superstardom: her childhood fascination with piano, the first song she ever wrote, her move to Manhattan as a teenager and the one-year ultimatum her dad gave her after she dropped out of college. But she also revealed a bit more about her offstage self and the inspirations behind some of her most beloved tunes.

"I really don't give a f--- about money at all," Gaga said when Stern tried to get the singer to dish on how much money her album sales and tours have grossed. In fact, she said she still lives in a tiny Brooklyn apartment and has only bought two things with her newfound riches: heart surgery and a car for her dad. "The Monster Ball was really expensive and the next show will be really expensive and I will pay for it," she said of the 2012 extravaganza that she's planning.

There was, however, one topic even the famously prying Stern couldn't goad Gaga could into talking about: her love life.

"What boyfriend? ... Who's Jean Luc?" she joked when Stern asked about what her closest friends call her offstage. (Even her parents call her Gaga at this point, she said, especially when they're mad at her.) "It's hard to find a boyfriend who doesn't mind a good tuck," she added, throwing more fuel on the fire of the absurdly tenacious Internet rumors about her gender.

"My first love is music," she explained, though when Stern asked whether she had been intimate with anyone recently, she laughed, "I got laid last night ... the guys who are here are my best friends in the whole world. You're talking about Luc Carl; he's been my best friend since I was 19."

Gaga stressed that Carl is still her best friend, sidestepping the boyfriend issue once again — and that he's going to launch a Sirius satellite radio show soon.

One of the stories Stern was predictably fascinated with was the fact that Gaga's first piano teacher was a stripper who danced at one of the radio host's favorite New York gentleman's clubs, Scores, leading him to wonder if he'd ever gotten a lap dance from Gaga's instructor.

Back in the day, in fact, before she was famous, Gaga said she used to dance on fire escapes and pretend she was a star, an image she re-created for her "The Edge of Glory" video. But those pre-fame days were also difficult, as she toiled at waitressing jobs and turned to drugs when she felt lonely, something she now really regrets. "To any little sweethearts that are listening ... don't touch [cocaine], it's the devil."

Though she's best known for writing her own songs, Gaga discussed the two tracks she's written for Britney Spears, "Quicksand" (which appeared on the Circus album), and "Telephone," which Spears recorded, but never released. Asked if it bummed her out that "Telephone" was rejected by Spears, Gaga said, "Hell no! Frickin' Britney Spears sang my record! I was doing back flips and ordering drinks!"

After describing how she came up with "Born This Way" while in the shower, Gaga pulled out her BlackBerry and played a number of early demos of her songs, including the first, vocals-only take on "Highway Unicorn," her first pass on the chorus to "Judas" and a snippet of a bouncy new song she wasn't ready to unleash yet. She also described how "Marry the Night" was inspired by the moment when she decided that she was not willing to become another one of those California club people after spending some time on the Left Coast early in her career trying to fit in. " 'No thanks ... see you later, it's been nice in the sun,' and I went back to New York and I married the night," she said of why she would never move to Cali, preferring the divey, shots-and-pool-table bars in her native city.

"Do I feel like a powerful person in show business? Yeah," she said when Stern wondered if she will use her newfound powers in the industry for good or evil.

The appearance also featured a performance of "Glory," with Gaga prefacing with a story about how it was inspired by her grandfather's passing, the first death of a close family member she'd ever experienced. "When my grandma was saying goodbye [to my grandfather], there was something so intense that happened for me that I saw ... as sad as the moment was, they both were acknowledging that they had really won in life because they had each other," she said of the 60-year marriage of her grandparents.

On the day her grandpa died, Gaga said she and her father sat down at the piano in their home and traded shots of tequila and she told her pops, "Grandpa's about to cross over into his glorious moment. It's hard now because he's on the edge." Right then, Gaga said she began playing piano and the song just tumbled out of her. She recorded it and played the emerging tune for her grandfather that day over the phone, and she's convinced he could hear it. He passed just hours later.

"It's about also knowing in your heart that you may never reach that glorious moment until you die, so live life on the edge — halfway between heaven and hell — and let's all dance in the middle in purgatory," she said before playing an affecting solo piano version of the tune.

And, in honor of Stern's notoriously luxurious locks, she also performed the Born This Way tune "Hair," explaining that it was inspired by her rebellious teenage Grateful Dead phase, when her mother would sneak in and chop off her gross, dread-y hair in her sleep to keep her looking neat and clean.

Blink-182's Mark Hoppus Reveals Neighborhoods Inspiration

'We're each like different neighborhoods in a city,' Blink bassist tells MTV News of his bandmates.

Last week was a big one for Blink-182 ... and their fans. Not only did the band debut "Up All Night," their first new song in almost eight years, but they revealed the title of their much-anticipated new album, too: Neighborhoods.

Of course, while all of this was happening, Blink bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus was e-mailing MTV News, first to express his excitement about the new music, and then to reveal just how "Up All Night" went from being a rehearsal favorite to Blink's official comeback single.

And now he's at it again, this time talking about the inspiration behind the album's title. As is the case with everything involving Blink these days, it seems the Neighborhoods name owes much to the long road Blink have taken since going on indefinite hiatus back in 2005.

"As Blink-182 reformed, we came to realize that, as close as Travis [Barker], Tom [DeLonge] and I are, we are all very different people. With very different tastes. Travis just released a hip-hop album, Tom always talks about U2, Coldplay and the Police, and I listen to obscure indie rock stuff," Hoppus wrote. "We each bring a very different aesthetic, talent and sound to the band. And in the differences between our ideas, the struggle and edge of all the different directions, is where the good things happen when we write together.

"So we're each like different neighborhoods in a city. Everybody in the world thinks of something unique unto themselves when they hear the word 'Neighborhoods,' " he continued. "To some it is a big city, others a small town, others suburbia, everything. The world is wide, exciting and very different. That's what Neighborhoods means to me."

Blink-182 will return to the road alongside My Chemical Romance on the 2011 Honda Civic Tour, which kicks off August 5 in Holmdel, New Jersey. Neighborhoods is tentatively due in stores on September 27.
