The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Message to Green Lantern: Homie, make it happen! One of the great DJs in the game is on the road with Nas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley on the Distant Relatives Tour, and we're all hoping Green can convince Nas to do another mixtape.

"Perhaps," Nas said with a grin. "Green is that dude. I'm always knocking Green Lantern mixtapes."

Nas and Damian Marley's Distant Relatives joint LP came out Tuesday (May 18). Nas also appears on Capone-N-Noreaga's independent July 13 album, The War Report 2. Although Nas didn't specifically record rhymes for the album, he appears on a track called "With Me." Nore told us the Nas vocals were taken from an old studio session he had in the vault.

"It's all good," Nas said about appearing on the album. "That's a team outta Queens. It's all good."

What about C-N-N's business partner Raekwon? Nas was conspicuously absent on the Chef's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ... Pt. II, and he regrets it. Maybe he'll get on the Wu-Tang Clan co-founder's upcoming Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang album.

"It's been no discussions," Nas said about appearing on Rae's new project. "You know how the music game is. Everybody is out there grindin', making music. But his last album was classic. I definitely wish I was on that piece. So yeah, something in the future is definitely likely. That'll be good."

Finally, what's good with a new Nas solo LP?

"I talked to a lot of people I really like about my next project. But there's no one sitting there doing my album right now that I could speak of," he said. "This record here [Distant Relatives], I think it's gonna push me and D in our solo projects. I think any record we do, it's gotta live up to this record. It's gotta be as good or better. We set the standard with this album. I'm just excited about this record right now."

On Tuesday night's (May 18) episode of "Glee," Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) comes face-to-face with his onetime high school rival, Bryan Ryan. "How I Met Your Mother" actor Neil Patrick Harris guest stars in the role, flexing his singing muscle.

"Well, I'm on it," Harris told MTV News. "I sing a bit, and I'm a jackass. I sing a few [songs], one of which is 'Dream On' by Aerosmith. And yeah, that's me hitting the high note at the end, FYI."

In the episode, directed by Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), Gleeks will learn what's at the root of the feud between the former classmates, and the revelation will be a surprising one, according to Harris.

But Harris isn't only fighting. He hinted there might be some loving too — with a certain head coach. "I don't know what scenes made it. I certainly had a love scene offscreen with Sue Sylvester, and that was exhausting," Harris joked. "But we'll see when we watch the show."

MTV News caught up with Morrison at the Fox upfronts in New York City on Monday, and though he wouldn't confirm the specific episode story line, he did admit that Jane Lynch, who plays Sue, was known to get frisky with her co-stars on set.

"Oh yeah! NPH! I actually haven't seen the episode so I don't know," Morrison said, referring to Harris. "This whole season has felt like one long episode, so it's kind of hard to think back and remember ... I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow night. I cannot confirm nor deny that, but Jane Lynch is known to do that. I might have done that as well."

Who do you think would win in a sing-off between Matthew Morrison and Neil Patrick Harris? Tell us in the comments!

Debi Nova Says New Album Luna Nueva Marks 'Rebirth'

'Sometimes it came in English, sometimes it came in Spanish,' singer says of her bilingual project out today.
By Rya Backer

Debi Nova has spent the majority of her musical career collaborating: She's lent her vocals and songwriting skills to the likes of Sean Paul, Mark Ronson, Ricky Martin and the Black Eyed Peas. But for Luna Nueva, her debut album out today, the 29-year-old Costa Rica native did it all on her own.

Nova, who moved Stateside when she was 17, is bilingual and highlights that throughout her new project, a mixed-genre collection that spans pop, reggaetón dance and Latin music. The singer also wrote all of the tracks.

"A good representation of what this project represents is a hybrid movement, or a mix, of English and Spanish. ... I played piano, guitar, and am really excited to put out a record at this moment in history, a record that's in two languages," she said when MTV News sat down with her earlier this year.

The first single off Luna, "Drummer Boy," is an uptempo pop track that combines synths and a Latin-inspired beat. Nova said she didn't strive to create a bilingual album, but rather, it evolved organically.

"I didn't plan it," she said. "You know, I really went into the studio with a blank canvas; I had no idea what I was going to do. I speak both languages, so I just let inspiration come in whatever shape, form it wanted to come, and sometimes it came in English, sometimes it came in Spanish, sometimes it came in both. ... So halfway through the album it was a deliberate thing. I wanted to make an album that represented that."

According to Nova, the album's title, Spanish for "new moon," speaks to her artistic growth. For fans wondering whether she drew any inspiration to a certain film of the same name, Nova was quick to quash that notion: "No, it's not about the vampires."

"When I decided to make this album in 2007, it was like a new cycle beginning for me, it was like a rebirth. The new moon in many different cultures marks the beginning of a cycle ... and I wanted to mark the beginning of a cycle."

The last time Katy Perry performed at an MTV awards show, things worked out pretty well. At the VMAs in September, she busted out a bone-shaking rendition of Queen's "We Will Rock You" to open to the evening. Then she fell for — and got engaged to — VMA host Russell Brand. Is it any surprise that she wants to do it all over again?

Perry is set to perform live at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards on June 6. The singer will play "California Gurls," the first single off her upcoming album, Teenage Dream. She joins previously announced performer Christina Aguilera at this year's show.

"I'm proud to represent the West Coast at the MTV Movie Awards in the magical glow of the Hollywood sign with my new single 'California Gurls,' " Perry said in a statement. "I hope it will be the theme song to a lot of summer loving; I know it will in my house!"

We can also announce a new group of high-profile presenters for this year's show. The cast of the upcoming comedy "Grown Ups" — Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and David Spade — as well as Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Aubrey Plaza will all be on-hand to dole out Golden Popcorns to winners.

These folks join previously revealed presenters Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Zac Efron, Jonah Hill, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove, Shaun White, Vanessa Hudgens, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Russell Brand.

Hosted by Aziz Ansari, the 2010 Movie Awards air live on Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET. Voting is currently under way at MovieAwards.MTV.com, where fans can choose their favorite films and actors in categories like Best Kiss, Best Villain and Best Scared-As-S**t Performance. "The Hangover" is leading the pack with six nominations, followed by five for both "New Moon" and "Avatar."

Don't miss the MTV Movie Awards, airing Sunday, June 6 at 9 p.m. ET on MTV!

Lee DeWyze Radio Single Marks An 'American Idol' First

Posted: 17 May 2010 01:07 AM PDT

'Princess (Reprise)' went to Chicago stations last week; no other 'Idol' contestant has had a song on radio before the finale.
By Gil Kaufman

Plenty of "American Idol" finalists have independently released albums or singles before rolling the dice on the show for a shot at a big-time recording contract. In April, an Ohio radio station even started playing Crystal Bowersox's "Holy Toledo," a song that was never released on an album. But never in the history of the program (as far as MTV News can tell) has a top-three finisher had a brand-new single offered to radio in the final weeks of competition.

On Friday — the day Lee DeWyze returned home to Chicago for a parade, a concert and a visit to Wrigley Field to sing the national anthem and throw out the first pitch at a Cubs game — his former label, Wuli Records, delivered "Princess (Reprise)" to two hometown stations. On Wednesday afternoon, music engineer Doug McBride was at Chicago's Gravity Studios putting the finishing touches on the song, which he'd first laid ears on less than 24 hours earlier.

"These guys [Lee DeWyze bandmembers and Wuli partners guitarist Louis Svitek and drummer Ryan McGuire] essentially produced this song," he said, cueing up the tune on the small studio's booming system. "It's not really a remix of the album song; it's a completely different production and recording. And basically, I just kind of helped them finish it." He said the song, which appears in a much more sedate version on the Wuli-released Slumberland, shows a different side of DeWyze, with a crunchier rock arrangement, big drums and a heavier, alt-rock vibe.

The tune starts out with DeWyze's raggedy, soulful voice over a gently strummed acoustic guitar, which is quickly joined by crashing drums and a thick wall of electric guitars that mixes the sensitivity of John Mayer with the stomp of Nickelback. The result is much more aggressive than the style of songs DeWyze has performed on "Idol," especially in the middle section, which features a squealing electric-guitar solo.

Though Wuli's founders sent copies of the song on Wednesday night to both the alt-rock station WKQX 102.1 (Q101) and the more classic-rock outlet WLUP 97.9 FM (The Loop), Kyle Guderian, operations manager for the Chicago sister stations, said Monday (May 17) that only WLUP has played it so far.

"We put it on the air Thursday on the Loop and spun it a few times on Thursday and Friday," he said, noting that it did not get any weekend play but was supposed to pop up again during the Monday drive-time hours. "We're still evaluating it to see if it will be a permanent add." While the song didn't fit the format for Q101, the station honored DeWyze's request to be interviewed on Friday on the outlet he said he listened to all the time growing up. DeWyze was in town for his home visit, which his many supporters were excited about, as the low-key singer steams toward a possible showdown in the finals with Crystal Bowersox or Casey James.

While the Loop only has about a dozen new songs in rotation at any give time, Guderian said the response has been positive so far for "Princess (Reprise)," and he's psyched to have the exclusive. "There's lots of local hometown support for him, so it's natural to have people exited to hear it and applauding the Loop's effort to support him," he said. "For a straight-ahead rock song, it fits the bill."

Slumberland, released quietly in January when DeWyze was already on the show, was the second of a planned trio of Wuli albums under the singer's contract with the label. Svitek and McGuire let their bandmate out of his contract, though, so he could compete on the show, but McGuire said the wheels were already in motion to release the follow-up to 2007's So I'm Told, so that plan went ahead.

McGuire said he and Svitek were inspired to work with the one vocal take they had from DeWyze of the alternate version of the song because they were eager to try to get some of Lee's music on local radio stations to support the hometown finalist. What they came up with was an unused track from the Slumberland sessions that they added new music to and beefed up in order to get play on commercial radio in the lead-up to the May 26 "Idol" finale.

Though sales of Slumberland were sluggish to tiny at first, McGuire said they've picked up considerably since, and he's hoping the new single — or, best-case scenario, a win by Lee — will boost them even more. "He's done pretty well," McGuire said cagily, his eyes hidden underneath a baseball cap pulled low over his face. He noted that Walmart had just made a sizable order and that other major national retailers are getting onboard, in addition to iTunes. Though he didn't have hard figures to share, he said even without DeWyze available to promote the disc — which he can't do while on "Idol" — the word of mouth is definitely getting out. "Walmart is a huge chain, and they gook a big chunk, a big whopper order," he said of the disc, which was recorded in his backyard studio in the Oak Park section of the city.

McGuire — who, along with ex-Ministry member Svitek, backed up DeWyze for five years and played on both records — couldn't resist razzing his former frontman, chuckling about how Lee had insisted on having the Slumberland cases printed on recycled hemp paper with plant-based dyes, a process that tacked an extra six weeks onto the manufacturing process. But now that orders are picking up, McGuire said he's been forced to revert back to good-old plastic jewel cases to comply with some of the major chains. "It's plastic from now on," he laughed. "Sorry, Lee."

What do you think about Lee's former bandmates releasing his music? Let us know in the comments.

Justin Bieber Gets Tattoo -- Check Out A Photo!

Young singer's tattoo is apparently of a bird in flight.

When you think about musicians with tattoos, teen sensation Justin Bieber is probably not the first — nor the hundredth — to come to mind. Yet on Monday (May 17), photos emerged showing the young singer getting, and then sporting, a small tattoo on his torso.

Two photos are making the rounds: one is a shot of Bieber sitting in a tattoo parlor, shirt pulled up, with the tattoo artist finishing up his work. The other finds him playing on a beach in Sydney, Australia, with the tattoo visible on his pelvis.

According to the photographic evidence, the tattoo is of a small bird in flight. And while Bieber's reps had not commented on the matter at press time, the agency that supplied the photo said the inking took place in March, the tattoo is part of a Bieber family tradition and that his dad, Jeremy Bieber, was alongside Justin when he got the ink at the Son of a Gun tattoo parlor in Toronto. The senior Bieber then "showed his approval by giving a thumbs-up when they posed for a photo with staff."

Bieber's fans have already taken to Twitter to post their reactions to his ink.

"OMG!! U cant believe what I just read!!" treasure_girl8 wrote. "Justin Bieber has a tattoo on the left hip?!?!?! WHAT?? Is that true??"

"Whenever my dad tells me I'm a disappointment for having a tattoo, I will remind him that Justin Bieber, 16, has one," glass_passenger wrote.

StopJBFanWar said simply, "Justin Bieber has a tattoo? That's hot."

Nas Says Working With Damian Marley Helped Him Through Personal Drama

Posted: 17 May 2010 05:44 AM PDT

'I kept my head clear and focused on what we was doing,' he says of recording Distant Relatives.
By Shaheem Reid

Nas shared a brotherly bond with Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley while recording their Distant Relatives LP, which was part of the reason he has been able to get through his much-publicized personal turmoil over the past year. In April of last year, Kelis filed for divorce from Nas. Since then, the two have been embroiled in a court battle over child support.

Still, despite whatever drama the MC found himself in, it didn't blur his focus on his new project.

"Personal life is what it is," he said Monday (May 17). "Everybody goes through it. Working on this record got me through it. Rockin' with D got me through it. His whole squad, his whole team, the way he rides, his whole culture. He didn't have to push anything on me. He didn't have to say anything particular. Just, I know this is my brother right here. Rockin' with him, I kept my head clear and focused on what we was doing, so it was all good."

Their joint effort hits stores Tuesday. The two started a tour in support of the project, touching the stage in Chicago over the weekend, and they hit New York on Monday night.

"People don't know what to expect still," Nas said of their live shows. "It's a good thing the album is out. You can enjoy it, come through, anticipate certain songs. We're doing an album for the first time, so we're still getting the kinks out, but each show we do, it's just growing."

Nas promised that the duo will get "heavily" into the album at their concerts. The guest stars on Distant Relatives include K'naan, Joss Stone, Lil Wayne and Jr. Gong's brother Stephen Marley.

"He's on two tracks, his vocals, which is on 'Leaders' and 'In His Own Words,' " Damian said. "He also produced those two tracks and a track called 'Patience' on the album. For me, it's a natural thing. All of my albums prior to this was produced by my brother and myself. That's how we do music. It's another natural step for us to do music on this album also."

"It's mind-blowing, man," Nas added about being in the lab with the Marley family. "Anytime you see family, you're always taken aback and see the similarities between people. When you see Stephen, you see Julian — all the brothers. It's an amazing thing. Sometimes I think, 'What if their father was here to see all of them, how well they're doing now?' He's gotta be proud — even now. It's a beautiful thing. [My brother] Jungle definitely came through. We made it a big family affair; the Marleys and Joneses: We chillin'."

The current single from Distant Relatives is "As We Enter."

"Great fun shooting that music video," Jr. Gong said. "It's almost like, in some way, a version of the live show. We get up there, performing for the camera. It reminded me of the 'Road to Zion' video. The look of it."

After collaborating with 3OH!3 on her second single, "Blah Blah Blah," Ke$ha returned the favor, lending her vocals to the duo's "My First Kiss," from their upcoming album, Streets of Gold. In the video for "My First Kiss," recently shot in Los Angeles, Ke$ha makes a cameo, and she told MTV News to expect, yes, a lot of kissing.

"Oh, my gosh! ... It's really fun! There are a lot of lips and golden things involved," she teased during KIIS-FM's annual Wango Tango festival at L.A.'s Staples Center on Saturday.

"Those guys are really fun, and I feel like we share a lot of the same mentality when it comes to our music and our life and having fun and being sarcastic and ironic and throwing dance parties," Ke$ha said.

The Nashville native explained that she and the guys, Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte, are actually pals; working together again was a natural progression.

"They're so funny and such good writers and really, really good guys," the "Tik Tok" singer said. "Not just friends in the business, like, we're proper friends now because they're just good people."

3OH!3 recently revealed their "Kiss" clip would be heavy on lip-locking. "Honestly, there is a lot of kissing, there's a lot of lips," Foreman told MTV News on the set of the video. "I think we all have mono after today, so we're all going to get tested. We probably should've been tested before," he laughed.

When "Sex and the City" fans found out Miley Cyrus would be making a cameo as herself in the upcoming sequel, they wanted every detail about the Disney princess' appearance in the film, opening May 27. Well, Samantha Jones herself, Kim Cattrall, said Cyrus was a professional beyond her years.

"She flew in, and she was literally there for, like, three or four hours," Cattrall told MTV News. "So then she was gone again. It was like this teen queen landed, and then she blasted off, because she's of a certain age, and she can only work certain hours. And, of course, we were there until 4 in the morning."

Despite her blink-and-you-might-miss-it time on the set, Cattrall said Cyrus was thrilled to be working with the "SATC" ladies. "It was a fun scene to do, and she was up for it," Cattrall said. "She was very sweet, and she was so excited by the fact that she was a part of this, and that was exciting for us. I mean, all of our guest stars — Liza Minnelli, Penélope Cruz and Miley — it really adds a couple more sparkles."

Like Cattrall, Sarah Jessica Parker said Cyrus showed up and did her job incredibly well. "She's a beautiful young lady and very self-possessed," she said. "I literally was not in the scene with her. I was in the scene, but we were not [onscreen] together. But she was lovely and on time and prompt and professional, very sweet. She worked two hours, and she was in and out.

Fresh off being named one of the top two finalists on "The Celebrity Apprentice," Poison frontman Bret Michaels is taking his story — specifically, his recent recovery from a life-threatening brain hemorrhage — to "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

During the sit-down — Michaels' first on-camera appearance since being rushed to the hospital for treatment of a subarachnoid hemorrhage last month — Michaels said he knew something "was severely wrong" the moment it happened, People reports.

"It just exploded instantly — ran from my temple down to the back of my skull," the singer/reality star said on the show, which airs Wednesday.

Michaels spent two weeks in intensive care, yet in true rocker fashion, he said he insisted on wearing his signature bandanna throughout the ordeal, even while confined to his hospital bed. "I said, 'If I'm going out, I want to go out rockin'.' "

Despite making rapid progress, Michaels is still in the midst of intense physical rehab. He will appear on Sunday's finale of "The Celebrity Apprentice," and win or lose, the rocker has plenty to keep him busy in the coming weeks. He announced last week that he will return to the stage at the Hard Rock in Biloxi, Mississippi, on May 28. He is also reportedly set to begin a tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd on June 10 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Michaels recently revealed his next TV project, returning to his "Rock of Love" home, VH1, for the series "Life As I Know It." The reality show debuts May 31 and promises viewers an inside look at Bret's home life.

Finally, Michaels has a new album to promote, Custom Built, due June 8. It features his collaboration with Miley Cyrus on "Nothing to Lose," as well as a cover of Sublime's landmark hit "What I Got."

Justin Bieber Tells Ellen DeGeneres He's 'Dating Around'

He also reveals his hair secrets: 'I get out of the shower, I blow-dry it, and it's done in five minutes.'

When it comes to landing teenybopper stars, Ellen DeGeneres has been on top of her game. Hot on the heels of last week's appearance by YouTube sensation Greyson Chance, DeGeneres was visited by Justin Bieber on Monday afternoon (May 17). Their lively exchange included talk about crazy fans, spending time with Miley Cyrus and Bieber's trademark glossy locks.

The talk-show host started things off by asking Bieber how he handles the constant screaming and assorted fandemonium associated with his public appearances.

"We've had some crazy stuff," he admitted but brushed off fan antics as par for the course, saying, "It can get a little crazy sometimes, but we have tight security. ... I'm having fun. Teenage boy on the road, havin' fun."

DeGeneres then ventured into more personal territory and asked the 16-year-old pointed questions about his dating life.

"I'm dating around," he said. "Hanging around with girls, but not really dating."

"Like hanging around with Miley Cyrus?" DeGeneres pushed, while showing the audience a paparazzi photo of Cyrus and Bieber together.

"[I'm] just, like, hanging out with people," Bieber responded.

"With Miley Cyrus?" DeGeneres asked again.

"Yeah," Bieber said, smiling, uncomfortable with answering the question directly. "And just ... people."

The cheeky host eventually let up, suggesting that he and Cyrus should at least record a duet together. She then changed the subject to Bieber's hairdo, wondering how long it takes him to get ready every morning.

"Like five minutes," Bieber said. "Like seriously. ... I get out of the shower, I blow-dry it, and it's done in five minutes. I just shake [my head]."

DeGeneres then readied the audience for Bieber's performance of his hit song "Baby," but before going to commercial, she held up some scissors and announced that she was going to cut "just a little" bit of the pop star's hair. Bieber politely, and a little anxiously, declined.

Author hopes the new setup will bring more in-depth questions than mainstream press.
By Kara Warner

"Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer announced a rather surprising publicity move Monday (May 17): She will be hosting her own press junket to promote the upcoming release of "Eclipse."

According to the letter she posted on her website, Meyer explained that she wants to offer her fans something different for this movie release, so she is inviting four lucky "Twilight" fan sites to her own "mini-junket" on Friday, June 18, the week before the film's L.A. premiere.

"For Twilight, I did the normal press junket, for New Moon I got to go on Oprah," she wrote. "Both of these were fun, exciting experiences. However, they both had the same drawback — the interviews were designed for a very broad audience, and because of that, most of the questions were about things you guys have known the answers to for years."

Meyer said she wants her junket to instead focus on in-depth, specific questions from the readers about the "Eclipse" movie, as well as her "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner" novella, out June 5.

The lucky U.S. fan sites picked by Meyer at random out of a hat (of which the author posted photos on her site) are: Twilight Series Theories, Twilight Source, Twifans and Letters to Twilight.

The websites may send one representative plus one guest. Meyer said she drew four replacement sites to be put on a waiting list, should one of the four selected be unable to attend.

"We'll have lunch, hang out, and hopefully have a fantastic time," Meyer promised. "I hope you all can make it! -Steph"

Ashley Olsen and boyfriend Justin Bartha are safe and sound after their flight from New York's JFK to Los Angeles' LAX had to make an emergency landing Sunday night when a small fire broke out in the cockpit of the plane.

Fellow passenger and L.A.-based publicist Phil Lobel told E! News that Olsen and the "Hangover" actor were among around 100 passengers on the United flight, which was diverted to Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport at about 9:30 p.m. after an electrical fire caused a crack in the plane's windshield.

Lobel told The Associated Press that about 30 minutes into the flight, he detected an electrical burning smell, and shortly thereafter, flight attendants began going over emergency instructions with passengers in the exit rows and someone brought up a fire extinguisher from the back of the plane.

No injuries were reported, according to FAA spokeswoman Holly Baker, but fire trucks and about a half-dozen other emergency vehicles met the plane on the runway in D.C.; passengers were reportedly booked on outbound flights to Los Angeles on Monday morning (May 17).

A rep for Olsen confirmed to E! News that the actress and Bartha were on the flight and that they are both OK.

Olsen and Bartha weren't the only actors aboard the plane: "Californication" actress Pamela Adlon and Jarrod Spector of Broadway's "Jersey Boys" were also passengers.

A rep for the National Transportation Safety Board said three people have been assigned to investigate the incident to determine the cause of the fire.

Stone Sour's Audio Secrecy Is 'Loaded With Melody,' Corey Taylor Says

'It's probably the best thing I've done in a long time,' says the singer, who also fronts Slipknot.

Corey Taylor isn't mincing words when it comes to the new Stone Sour album — and yes, he realizes this might offend fans of his other band, Slipknot.

"It's so good, man. Every song has a catchy hook — even the heavy stuff — every song is loaded with melody. It's still got the attitude, but it's there. It's probably the best thing I've done in a long time," he told MTV News. "I mean [Slipknot's 2008 effort] All Hope Is Gone was a great album, and I worked really hard on it, but on this album ... coming in with the amount of material — we recorded 18 songs — and knowing that every tune not only has its own identity but is damn good, I'm very, very proud of that."

Yes, Taylor is willing to talk at great length about Audio Secrecy, the follow-up to Stone Sour's breakthrough 2006 album, Come What(ever) May. Recorded at Nashville's iconic Blackbird Studios — the first time he's made an album outside of Los Angeles or his native Iowa — it's a record positively brimming with ideas, one that, as he put it, represents "everything that we've been threatening to do," even if that means exploring far quieter, more refined sonic territories.

"I finished my last song two days ago, and it's all killer; there's no filler. It's so good. I mean, there's so many vibes and so many styles, but it's all cohesive. The continuity is there," he said. "It doesn't sound like a comp album, it doesn't sound like 12 bands coming in going, 'We're going to record a song!' It sounds like a band exploring, which, to me, is [a] really old-school tradition.

"You never used to go in and just kind of chop out a bunch of songs and throw it out there. The old guard would go in, and they would just record what they had. They would record the songs that they wrote, because they wrote them. It didn't have to sound a certain way, didn't have to be a certain way, it didn't all have to sound the same," he continued. "It had life, and that's what we did with this. ... We just said, 'You know what? We wrote this. So what if this is heavier than that? So what if this is in a major key and these are in minor keys? ... We feel this, so let's go for it.' "

The funny thing is, though he'll seemingly never run out of good things to say about the album, there's plenty he's mum about. Perhaps in keeping with its title, there's still no firm release date for Secrecy, and Taylor wouldn't reveal if all 18 songs would make the final track list ("There's a plan hatching ... that's all I'm gonna say"). And when asked about his favorite song on the album, he would only say, "They're all killer," before singling out a piano-laden track called "Miracles" as a standout.

"I play piano on a bunch of songs. One of them is called 'Miracles,' which is really dark but kind of crescendos into this huge chorus at the end," he said. "There's so much more, though. We have an overabundance of writers in this band. We all write, so it's not a case of one guy writing all the songs or no one writing the songs. It's a complete thing."

While Taylor is playing things close to the vest with Stone Sour, things aren't quite the same with Slipknot. After wrapping a world tour in support of All Hope Is Gone in late 2009, the band went on a rather informal break — and, from the sound of things, not much has changed since then. For the immediate future, Taylor is 100 percent focused on Stone Sour.

"There's nothing really happening [with Slipknot]," he said. "There's a DVD coming out, apparently, that I will be informed of so I can promote it. Nobody talks to me about these things. I get a complimentary copy. I mean, I still don't have a copy of [the band's 2002 DVD] 'Disasterpieces.' What the f---?"

We've seen Poison's Bret Michaels surrounded by a bevy of buxom, tattooed babes on "Rock of Love," watched him compete on "The Celebrity Apprentice" and waited anxiously to hear news of his recovery from a potentially fatal brain hemorrhage. But the one side of the former wild-child rocker we haven't really seen is his private one.

That will change on May 31 when VH1 premieres a new Michaels documentary series, "Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It," which a press announcement promises will give viewers "an insider's look at Bret's home life when he isn't touring, shooting, partying and rocking out. After the lights have dimmed on stage and the music stops for the night, Bret rolls off the tour bus right into the loving arms of his daughters Raine and Jorja, who affectionately refer to him as 'Poppa Rocka.' "

Due to Michaels' recent health crisis, the full 10-episode run of the half-hour show has been pushed to the fall, with no confirmed air date available at press time.

"After Bret's recent appendectomy and life-threatening brain hemorrhage, we're so happy that he is on the road to recovery and coming back to VH1," said Jeff Olde, executive vice president of original programming and production at the network. "Bret is family to us and has always been a huge hit on the network, headlining several series and specials that have garnered record-breaking ratings and made a strong connection with our audience. We have temporarily halted production on the series with Bret's health as our primary concern. Production will resume when it is cleared by his doctors. ... We'd like to celebrate Bret's recovery with this sneak peak special featuring the next chapter in Bret's story on VH1. It's a never-before-seen look into Bret's family life — the real center of his world from which he draws his unsinkable strength."

Michaels is recovering from the hemorrhage and is slated to give his first on-camera interview since the health scare on Wednesday, when he visits "The Oprah Winfrey Show." He is also expected to appear on the season finale of "The Celebrity Apprentice" on Sunday and to play his first concert since the incident on May 28.

The rocker has a new album, Custom Built, due out on June 8. It features his collaboration with Miley Cyrus on "Nothing to Lose," as well as a cover of Sublime's landmark hit "What I Got."

Ludacris has gone from radio personality to rapper. Most recently, he entered the spirits business, with a cognac called Conjure hitting the top shelf. And now, it seems his latest his latest endeavor is having quite an effect on his art. The Battle of the Sexes star told MTV News his next video, for "Sex Room," would be inspired by 2010 MTV Movie Awards nominee "The Hangover."

"The 'Sex Room' video will be on your tube very soon and on the Internet," Luda said on the red carpet for KIIS-FM's annual Wango Tango festival in Los Angeles over the weekend.

"We got two different versions: one just for the adults and one for the kids. We did it out in Las Vegas. What better way to do it? Me and Trey Songz — it's pretty self-explanatory. The concept is kind of like 'The Hangover' theme, just like the movie. You gotta check it out."

"Sex Room" features Trey Songz, and is the third single from Luda's latest effort, Battle of the Sexes, which earlier this year debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. While the album is the Atlanta MC's seventh, it's his first concept-driven collection.

In February he explained the idea behind it to MTV News, saying it was originally slated to be a duets album featuring 'Cris and former Disturbing Tha Peace artist Shawnna before it morphed into a free-for-all for female MCs.

"It's such a male-dominated industry that I feel like females need more of a voice, so we wanted to hear more of what the hell they had to say," Luda said. "With that being said, I went out and got women from the past, the present and the future — everyone from Lil Kim, Eve, Trina, Nicki Minaj. I got records where I'm talking about women ... and where women are talking back to me."

In the wake of heavy-metal singer Ronnie James Dio's death on Sunday, tributes have been pouring in from fans, bandmates and fellow musicians. Slash, Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx, Queen's Brian May, the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan and the members of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are among the musicians who took to the Internet to honor Dio, who fronted Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell and, of course, his own band, Dio, over the course of his long career.

"Ronnie died at 7:45 a.m.," Slash tweeted. "But his music will live for eternity."

"I still have this image of him standing onstage in front of 100,000 belting out 'Man on the Silver Mountain' and remember the shivers it sent up my spine," said Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx, who became friends with Dio while touring Europe. "[Dio was] one of the kindest souls I have ever met, and his talent was beyond inspirational to so many of us."

Billy Corgan took to Twitter: "R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio. I only got to meet him once and I can honestly say he was the nicest person I have ever met in music. ... Ronnie was a true gentleman, and obviously one of the best rock singers there will ever be. What a sad loss."

"It's a shock to hear that Ronnie has gone," Queen guitarist Brian May wrote in a post on his website. "Even though we had all known he was battling with cancer for some time, he was such a wiry fighter, and of such an amazingly optimistic nature, I think I assumed he would go on forever.

"[He] was one of the creators of the genre of heavy metal," May continued. "I don't know if he invented the devil-horn salute, but he was certainly the man who, more than ever, made it a universal symbol, a worldwide salute of metal. ... He was universally loved in the community of rock music and will be sorely missed."

The members of Iron Maiden called their longtime friend an "incredibly gifted singer" and "a wonderfully warm, intelligent and generous person" in a joint statement. "We played many shows together over the years, and we will all miss him greatly. ... The world has lost an irreplaceable talent and, first and foremost, one of the finest human beings you could ever wish to meet."

Judas Priest offered a message of sympathy for Dio's widow, Wendy: "We are filled with great sadness at the terrible news about our friend Ronnie James Dio. Our condolences and love go to Wendy [Dio, Ronnie's wife/manager] and Ronnie's family. ... Ronnie was a wonderful man and will be sorely missed."

Chris Brown and Lil Wayne protégé Tyga released their collaborative mixtape Fan of a Fan online in the wee hours of Monday morning (May 17).

The project is a joint effort between Brown and the Young Money rapper featuring a mix of polished R&B tunes and raw hip-hop numbers.

Lil Wayne pops up on "I'm on It" and Bow Wow makes a cameo on "Ain't Thinking 'Bout You." By and large, though, the set is mostly Brown and Tyga going back and forth.

"Yo, all the fans, Fan of a Fan, that strictly means we're the fans of you guys," Brown said in an interlude. "We love y'all and thank you for all the support, and we're gonna keep rocking."

"Number One," a standout among the collection, ups the fan appreciation.

"You know that I want it, so please let me get it, girl," Brown croons. "When it's all said and done, I'm gonna make you number one."

"Dueces," another standout that leaked prior to the mixtape's release (along with a video for "Holler at Me," a track that didn't make the final cut), features what appears to be a dig at Rihanna, Brown's ex-girlfriend.

"All that bulls--- is for the birds, you ain't nothing but a vulture," sings Brown, who is currently under probation after pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna. "Always hoping for the worst, waiting for me to f--- up/ You'll regret the day when I find another girl, that knows just what I need/ She knows just what I mean, when I tell her keep it drama free."

Brown and Tiger performed "Deuces" over the weekend at the singer's Virginia Stand Up! charity concert, which benefited his local community and aid to Haiti.

In February, Brown dropped his first mixtape, In My Zone, a collaboration with the reigning Southern mixtape king DJ Drama.

Ronnie James Dio Remembered By Bandmates Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore, Others

Former bandmates in Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Dio remember singer, who died Sunday.
By MTV News staff

In the hours after legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio's death on Sunday, the Blabbermouth website has been filled with comments from musicians paying tribute to the vocalist, who fronted Rainbow, Black Sabbath and, of course, Dio during his long and influential career.

Among the many noteworthy comments were ones from his former bandmates. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who left Deep Purple in 1975 to form Rainbow with Dio, was characteristically terse in his statement: "Ronnie had a unique and wonderful voice. He will be sadly missed in the rock and roll world."

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi — who worked with Dio three separate times over the years, twice in Black Sabbath and most recently with Heaven and Hell — said:

"Yesterday, 16th May, my dear, dear friend Ronnie James Dio passed away at 7.45 a.m. L.A. time. I've been in total shock; I just can't believe he's gone.

"Ronnie was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. We had some fantastic times together. Ronnie loved what he did, making music and performing onstage. He loved his fans so much. He was a kind man and would put himself out to help others.

"I can honestly say it's truly been an honor to play at his side for all these years. His music will live on forever.

"Our thoughts are with [Dio's wife/manager] Wendy Dio, who stood by Ronnie until the end. He loved her very much. The man with the magic voice is a star amongst stars, a true professional.

"I'll miss you so much, my dear friend."

Heaven and Hell were scheduled to tour Europe this summer but cancelled earlier this year owing to Dio's condition.

Former Dio guitarist Rowan Robertson said, "I am privileged to have been a part of Ronnie James Dio's life and music. His closest ones are in my thoughts."

And former Dio keyboardist Jens Johansson wrote a long post remembering the singer.

"I hesitated a bit to write something about this. In a way it feels weird to use this sad day to attract attention to myself. Then I realized I also feel a bit strange to not even comment in public.

"I joined Dio-the-band for about a year in the early '90s, that's how I got to know Ronnie. Him, and let's not forget Wendy, who is still very much alive. They were a team. ...

"My time in Dio was simply one of the best times in my life. Ronnie was one of the best people I ever met, very different from the usual musicians and other suspects in this wretched industry. I think this is something you will hear over and over — you have heard it before he was gone, and you will also keep hearing it after he is gone. Quite simply, because it's the truth. And especially towards fans.

"If you didn't realize it by now, you can ask anyone who met him. Ronnie was the guy signing autographs in the cold rain after the point where any mere mortal would have crawled back into bed. It was insane. His dedication to the fans was not from this world. He is the guy that finally made it dawn on me who it is who actually pays the bills — it is the fans. ...

"His voice was like a tank... I never heard him have a bad day. I have honestly never met anyone else like this in my whole life. Even if he stayed up all night drinking and talking, he would still deliver 150 percent the next day.

"From his performing, you'd think he was 22 years old, his whole life... but if you look at how much he accomplished, you'd think he lived to the age of 120.

"My best memories of the time with him are either him laughing at something I or someone else said, or me laughing at something he said, or any of the many running gags that he created. ...

"He was very intelligent. He was, without a question, NOT some sort of devil worshipper or Satanist. He grew up in a small town and was what I would call just a 'very decent person.' He had higher morals than most people I have met, and definitely he had higher morals than I have. He just didn't particularly believe in God of the Christian bible, I think. But he was really spiritual and thought about deep issues, a lot.

"I realize this may sound like I'm trying to paint too soft a picture. I am really racking my brains here and I couldn't think of anything bad to say about him even if I tried. The only thing I can think of is that his character definitely had a surprising bite when something pissed him off; he didn't suffer fools lightly. If you were a fool in his path, and all options of patience, understanding and politeness had been exhausted, then he didn't hold back verbally... beware, fool, you might have two a--holes all of a sudden, or your head might be rolling on the floor! I, of course, found this extremely amusing (unless it was me who was the unwitting fool, which I think happened, like, once).

"I don't exaggerate when I say I feel him being gone is a loss for humanity, but I still try to look at the glass as half full. Imagine if he would have died at 27 like so many other geniuses. As a listener I'm thankful for that grace, and as a person I'm thankful I got to know him. ...

"The music he made will remain after me, or anyone reading this, will be gone. So unless you did already, put some of it on. If it puts an evil smile on your face, then your day is better. That's all any musician can ask from you."
