Aaron Kelly Sent Packing On 'American Idol'

Michael Lynche joins him in the bottom three, despite experts predicting Casey James' exit

On this week's "American Idol," the top five went old school, tackling the time-tested songbook of Frank Sinatra. So it was perhaps not all that surprising that the show's youngest contestant ended up getting the boot.

Yes, on Wednesday night's (May 5) results show, voters sent 17-year-old Aaron Kelly packing, thanks largely to his shaky performance of "Fly Me to the Moon," a timid turn that Simon Cowell rather rightfully described as "mouse" like.

Still, despite coming so close to winning it all, Kelly was all smiles when host Ryan Seacrest told him his time was up, saying, "I've had a great time; I've had a blast," before taking one more run at "Moon" (and, to be honest, this version was much better than Tuesday night's).

And while Kelly's exit wasn't exactly shocking, it was who joined him in the bottom two that raised more than a few eyebrows: Michael Lynche, the big-bodied crooner who won praise for his jazzy version of "The Way You Look Tonight," a performance Cowell and fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres particularly liked.

In the end, Lynche survived, and joined Lee Dewyze — a lock to advance after his swinging, swaggering take on "That's Life" — Crystal Bowersox and, somewhat surprisingly, Casey James, in the top four.

James had been most "Idol" experts' pick to get the boot on Wednesday, following an awkward version of "Blue Skies." And yet, he avoided elimination yet again (maybe it had something to do with his scruffy, sorta-beard).

Earlier in the show, Lady Gaga — who wore black (lace) in keeping with the classy, Sinatra vibe of the show — strutted through a performance of her current single "Alejandro," and Sinatra Week mentor Harry Connick Jr. crooned his way through a version of the Lennon/McCartney classic "And I Love Her" (from his new album of covers, Your Songs) and w was joined by the remaining "Idol" hopefuls through a medley of his own hits.

Next week, frequent "Idol" collaborator Jamie Foxx will help guide the top four through some of Hollywood's best-known movie music.

Bret Michaels Says He's 'Lucky To Be Alive'

'I said [to the doctors] in these exact words: 'Am I dying?' ' Poison frontman tells People magazine.

One day after he was released from the intensive care unit of a Phoenix hospital following a massive brain hemorrhage, Bret Michaels told People magazine that he feels "lucky to be alive."

In the new issue of the magazine — which hits newsstands Friday — Michaels recalls the harrowing moments after he was first rushed to the emergency room on April 22, following a series of "excruciating headaches," which doctors would later discover were actually due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

"I said [to the doctors] in these exact words: 'Am I dying?' " Michaels told the magazine. " 'If I'm dying, I want to see my kids. But if I have a chance, I don't want them to see me in this condition.' "

Doctors were able to stabilize Michaels, but he remained in the ICU for 10 days. During that time, he underwent a battery of tests to determine the cause of his hemorrhage, which occurred at the base of his brain stem, as fans filled Facebook and Twitter with messages of support, and his friends — like "Celebrity Apprentice" co-stars Sharon Osbourne and Bill Goldberg — issued statements hoping for a full recovery. His condition slowly improved, and earlier this week, the Poison frontman was able to speak without slurring his words.

His team of doctors at Phoenix's Barrow Neurological Institute praised Michaels' strength and spirit, saying his "sheer will to live and fully recover is undeniable." According to People, Michaels is currently undergoing physical therapy at an undisclosed rehabilitation facility and is expected to make a full recovery.

Lady Gaga Brings 'Alejandro' To 'American Idol'

Pop star starts over-the-top performance with a slowed-down snippet of 'Bad Romance.'

She's one of the hottest musical acts at the moment, an endlessly fascinating performer who has enough tricks up her sleeve to possibly outlast the long list of flavors of the month who have similarly skyrocketed to the top of the charts. On Wednesday night (May 5), "American Idol" officially went Gaga.

"This is a woman who's dominating the charts and pushing the pop-culture envelope," Ryan Seacrest said in his gushing introduction of Lady Gaga.

With that, America's most popular TV show became a showcase for one of its most unique talents. Taking to the stage with a large ensemble of backup dancers in a pre-taped performance, Lady Gaga sang the newest single from The Fame Monster, a Spanish-influenced number called "Alejandro." Gaga started out at the piano for a slowed-down snippet of "Bad Romance."

Dressed in a revealing-but-veiled black outfit that might be appropriate for a woman attending a stripper's funeral, Gaga wielded a cape and was surrounded by a team of shirtless dancers. Halfway through the performance, she shed her cape and began writhing on the floor.

"Alejandro, let me go," she sang. "You know that I love you, boy/ Hot like Mexico, rejoice."

Over in one corner of the stage, a statue of the Virgin Mary had flames pouring out of the top of it, in something that felt straight out of Madonna's repertoire in her prime. Smoke filled the stage while the songstress performed a highly choreographed dance routine.

The "Idol" crowd seemed appreciative of the spectacle, welcoming her with opening arms and cheering throughout the performance.

Gaga taped the performance after last week's elimination show, when Siobhan Magnus got the boot.

Travie McCoy And Bruno Mars Hit The Beach In 'Billionaire' Video

Pete Wentz and Brendon Urie even show up in the clip to ride around on Vespas.

When Travie McCoy first started writing songs for his solo album, it was shaping up to be a decidedly dark affair. Deflated by his "sh--ty breakup" with Katy Perry, he penned a host of brokenhearted, mad-at-the-world songs, all of which he intended to put on the album.

But then, almost out of nowhere, he had an epiphany: In the grand scheme of things, he didn't have it all that rough, so why should he be writing feel-bad songs? (Or, as he told MTV News, "Why dampen the mood with sad, sh--ty records?") And so, his album changed, becoming a full-blown, unapologetically good-time affair — the soundtrack to the slathering of suntan lotion and not the shedding of tears.

We got the first taste of Lazarus in March, with the premiere of the first single, "Billionaire." And now, with temperatures rising and summer just around the corner, we get the video. The timing couldn't have been better.

The track — which features suddenly sizzling songwriter/producer Bruno Mars on the hook — is sunny, shiny, breezy and blissed-out, a sort of updated take on "Brewster's Millions" (that's how McCoy put it, at least), with Travie doling out the dollars and fulfilling wishes. And the video is in the same vein: a fantasy ride in which McCoy helps out the downtrodden (or, at least, skateboarders, graffiti artists and those annoying dudes who try to sell you their rap demos) while Mars strums an acoustic in the sunshine. Oh, and Pete Wentz and Brendon Urie show up to ride around on some Vespas.

If McCoy was looking to raise spirits and score a summertime smash, well, then it's pretty much mission accomplished: The song is perfect for the sunshine, Mars is currently the hottest name in the biz (thanks to B.o.B's hit "Nothin' on You"), and the video is a lighthearted romp. And he still manages to get in a dig at his ex in one of the verses — which is sort of like having his cake and eating it too.

J. Cole Eyeing August For Debut's Release

'That's what feels right and that's what it looks like, trajectory-wise,' he says of late-summer release.

J. Cole has been riding a wave of momentum ever since his appearance on Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 track "A Star Is Born." While Cole's underground acclaim started with the release of his second mixtape, The Warm-Up, back in June, the Jay feature, as well as his sold-out show at New York's S.O.B.'s, put him on the mainstream radar.

When the single "Who Dat," from his yet-untitled debut album, dropped last week, it left many wondering when the album would drop. Cole was on Shade 45's "The All Out Show" on Tuesday, and he explained that nothing was concrete, but it's likely to be late summer.

"They ain't gave me no date yet, but I'll just say August myself, because that's what feels right and that's what it looks like, trajectory-wise," Cole said.

When MTV News caught up with him at S.O.B.'s in March, he said he felt like the material he was coming with was the perfect setup for what's to come.

"You might have an incredible single or an incredible song, and if you just set it up the wrong way, it won't go as far as it could've went," he said. "I feel like Jay's last album had the perfect setup, single-wise. So it's really about finding the right setup, and then from there, it's up to the people to decide."

J. Cole said he thinks his album is phenomenal, but it's ultimately up to the people to decide. Along with his own production work, Cole had a chance to work with a variety of A-list hitmakers. He worked with Salaam Remi and Pharrell and said his experience with Jim Jonsin was the most fruitful.

"When you think Jim Jonsin, he has #1's. His #1's include [Lil Wayne's] "Lollipop" and Beyoncé and huge pop records. So when I went in there, of course I'm not going in there with an attitude. I'm going in there really like, 'OK, what's about to come out of this?' Because, man, that's really not my style. The first beat he played me was like, 'Whoa.' And he hadn't heard my stuff really, but the first beat he played me was custom-fit for me."

Ludacris wears many hats these days — recording artist, actor, entrepreneur — but when the Atlanta MC was younger, the riches weren't exactly raining down like they are these days.

"At the age of 17, I had a job at Pizza Hut," Ludacris reveals during the next episode of MTV's new show "When I Was 17," which airs Saturday at 11 a.m. and also features "Biggest Loser" trainer Jillian Michaels and Pete Wentz.

Ever the hustler, Luda pushed pizzas at the restaurant chain for a particular reason.

"Not only did I get a job at Pizza Hut to get a little extra change in my pocket, but I also did it so that I could eat," he explained. "I lived with my father. God bless my father, I love him to death, may he rest in peace, but my father did not know how to cook. Simple as that."

There seems to be room for debate between 'Cris and his friends about how much he actually enjoyed his employment.

"I loved working at Pizza Hut, 'cause it was a hell of an experience," he said, smiling and calling the job "beautiful."

"Well, he told me working at Pizza Hut was one of his worst jobs ever," the rapper's friend Kiah recalled.

The Disturbing Tha Peace CEO worked in the kitchen making the pies, which, according to another friend Ryan, didn't help him land any hot dates.

"He hated that job," Ryan said. "I know it wasn't really helping his love life. ... Working at Pizza Hut? That ain't gangster."

At least we know Ludacris has moved on to bigger and better things.

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Ludacris, Jillian Michaels and Pete Wentz — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

Drake Talks About Female Fans 'Throwing Underwear Onstage'

MC says he's 'honored' to be a member of the 'bra-and-panties-tossing club.'
By Jayson Rodriguez

It seems that Drake has joined an exclusive club usually reserved for R&B lotharios. According to the rapper/singer, his tour stops have featured "this recurring theme of throwing underwear onstage."

In an interview with CNN, Drake talked about his career, influences and becoming a member of the "bra-and-panties-tossing club."

"You know, that's nothing original," Drake said, joking about the long practice of female fans tossing their undergarments onstage in appreciation of a performance. "Prince can tell you better stories about that than I could. I just feel honored to be inducted."

Drake explained that he writes primarily for his female fans — case in point, his new single "Find Your Love" — and he studies them carefully.

"I'm inspired by the makeup of the woman, their minds, their conversations, the emotions that they exude and pour out of them," Drake continued. "I love women, I love to study women. I'm not a womanizer; I love to just study behavior patterns in a woman and how to interact with them, because I like to write for women."

The recently announced Hot 97 Summer Jam performer also talked about Lil Wayne and his jail term.

Drake said he disagreed with the punishment; Wayne pleaded guilty to attempted gun possession and was sentenced to a year in prison.

"In my opinion, he didn't do anything wrong," Drake said. "I think it was the opportunity to make an example out of someone that didn't deserve to be made an example out of."

Justin Bieber Fans Send Kim Kardashian 'Death Threats'

'This is unBeliebable!!!' Kardashian tweets about Bieber's overzealous fans.

Justin Bieber has not been shy about his desire to make reality star Kim Kardashian his girlfriend. So, when the two met up at the White House Correspondents' dinner in Washington, D.C., over the weekend, he made sure to get a picture with her. He later posted the picture on his Twitter page and called her his "girlfriend."

Some Bieber fans, however, weren't at all pleased with the situation and let Kardashian know as much. On Tuesday, the reality star tweeted, "Seriously Biebs! @JustinBieber I'm getting death threats from your fans! This is unBeliebable!!!" Bieber responded with a tweet to his fans saying, "Ladies calm down. @kimkardashian is a friend. a very sexy friend but a friend. no need 4 threats. Let's all be friends and hang out often."

Just days before, Kardashian tweeted that she is the latest person to catch Bieber Fever, writing, "I officially have Bieber Fever!!! ... Best time in DC. Heading home soon!"

It seems Bieber had an equally good time chilling with her, even if the whole Kardashian encounter left his fans with a bad taste in their mouths. "Obama had jokes!!! Met some really great people and sat with Queen Latifah. She is an awesome person," he wrote. "The dinner tonight with the president was fun. I'm super jet legged ... Great night in DC ... but this jet lag from the last 2 weeks of travel is bad. sleepy but trying to watch this fight. Money is on Mayweather."

Bieber's fans have earned a reputation for being incredibly loyal. In fact, several appearances over the last several months were canceled due to their over-enthusiasm for the pop star. Late last month, an appearance in Australia was canceled after a crowd stampede. And prior to that, fans in Paris and Long Island got so out of hand that appearances there also had to be canceled.

What do you think of Bieber Fever? Has it gotten out of hand? Tell us in the comments!

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Apologizes To Erin Andrews On 'The View'

'I'm really sorry, and I wanted to offer that publicly too,' Hasselbeck says.
By Larry Carroll

After 13 years on the air, the list of people "The View" has offended seems longer than the ranks of those who haven't been unfavorably provoked by the talk show's hot-button conversations. Now, "Dancing With the Stars" contestant Erin Andrews is the latest to receive an apology and lightning-rod host Elisabeth Hasselbeck is the one making a mea culpa.

On Tuesday, the football player's wife commented on the convicted stalker who peeped at the sideline reporter through a hotel-room keyhole, filmed it and placed the clip on the Internet. In effect, the conservative Hasselbeck was making the point that Andrews' revealing outfits on "Dancing With the Stars" could have saved the stalker the jail term because he would have seen nearly as much.

The point was deemed ill-advised by many, including Hasselbeck herself a few hours after the show's taping. The former "Survivor" contestant said on Wednesday's (May 5) show that she left work feeling badly about the comments, and her 5-year-old daughter explained to her why she should apologize.

"She's so cute; she said to me, 'Mommy, why don't you just call Erin and tell her you're sorry?,' " Hasselbeck reported on "The View" Wednesday. "So, thankfully, I listened to her — she's a wise little girl — and I did. So, I'm really sorry, and I wanted to offer that publicly too, even though I did follow that advice."

For Andrews — who has waged a very public, very emotional battle against the stalker and additional threats — the comments of Hasselbeck were an insult. "[It's] a slap in the face to victims of stalking and sexual predators," Andrews said after Tuesday's "Dancing With the Stars" results show. "[As a] woman, I'm disappointed she went there."

Damon Dash Says He'd Welcome Jay-Z's Return To Roc-A-Fella

'He can come holla at me,' Dame says of his former Roc partner.
By Shaheem Reid

By now, everyone should know that Dame Dash is bringing back Roc-A-Fella Records. He recently signed a distribution deal with very familiar partners Def Jam and will be releasing albums under the name of the Roc, a label he co-founded with Jay-Z and Kareem "Biggs" Burke in the '90s before selling his share to Island Def Jam in 2004.

But Dash's co-founders aren't onboard for the new venture, and some Roc-A-Fella purists are already saying that it just isn't the Roc without Jay and Biggs.

"I don't know," Dame said of the naysayers. "A 'Roc-A-Fella purist' is me. So what am I gonna tell myself? If someone has the essence and the DNA that Roc-A-Fella initially meant and they reflect that, then it's not an issue. Any Roc-A-Fella purist — that would mean they would love to see the evolution of Roc-A-Fella. They would be happy because as of now [the label] doesn't exist. And the spirit doesn't exist. If we're gonna bring back the spirit of Roc-A-Fella, any Roc-A-Fella purist would say, 'That's exactly what I would have wanted Damon to do if he was still the CEO of Roc-A-Fella.' Or, 'Roc-A-Fella as an entity always chose the opinion leader, and he seems to be that guy. And always a thorough individual, and he seems to be that guy as well.' So I would think a Roc-A-Fella purist would be happy."

Dash says he welcomes the participation of both Biggs and Jay-Z, if they want to be involved.

"If Jay wanna come through and do something, he can come holla at me," Dash said. "I ain't got no beefs with Jay."

Dame made sure to add that he and Hov would have to come to an amicable business agreement if they were ever to partner again.

"Just off the strength that it's Roc-A-Fella, I could never tell Jay he can't be a part of something he helped create," the Harlem born CEO said. "So maybe it felt ridiculous that he said [me and Biggs couldn't be a part of Roc-A-Fella once we sold the company] and a Roc-A-Fella purists didn't appreciate that. If I walked away from Roc-A-Fella, then that would be different. But the option should always be there. So the option is there for him. He helped build that. And I don't hold grudges. I think one of the most important things in evolving is forgiveness. If he did something wrong or if I did something wrong, we'd have to forgive each other, or we'd still be children."

The first release from the latest incarnation of the Roc is Curren$y's Pilot Talk, which has a tentative release date of June 15. After that will be the mixtape album helmed by Ski Beatz called 24 Hour Karate School.

Can Roc-A-Fella Records truly exist without Jay-Z's involvement? Share your thoughts in the comments.
