Christina Aguilera's 'Not Myself Tonight' Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

From Madonna to Michael Jackson to Bettie Page, we give you a rundown of the influences on Xtina's new clip.

Christina Aguilera's jaw-dropping "Not Myself Tonight" sees the pop star getting back to her "Dirrty" roots, but that's not the only thing about it feels a bit nostalgic.

See, in addition to all the bondage, barely there outfits and heavy breathing on display in the clip, there's a whole lot of it that also reminds us of some of the greatest videos of yesteryear (or even last year). There's a familiar feel to "Tonight," which is just part of why watching it is such a blast (those barely there outfits are another). So in order to maximize your enjoyment, we've compiled this handy pop-culture cheat sheet, a sort of scorecard of the many influences that flash before your eyes. Oh, and we've alphabetized it for your perusing ease.

Here's what you may have missed in Christina Aguilera's "Not Myself Tonight":

"Bad Romance": Epic, white-washed Lady Gaga video. From Christina's cat-like crawl across the floor to her red lingerie, there's a whole lot of "Not Myself Tonight" that's reminiscent of "Bad Romance" though, for brevity's sake, let's just focus on the black pair of Carrera shades she wears at the beginning of the video. Gaga can be seen rocking an identical pair in "Romance," although hers are white.

Dewan-Tatum, Jenna: Actress/wife of "G.I. Joe" star Channing Tatum (the two met on the set of 2006's "Step Up") makes a cameo in "Tonight" as Aguilera's bound-at-the-wrists S&M slave. This scene also appeared in the director's cut of "Step Up," which is, like, really weird.

"Dip It Low": Sex-sational 2004 video by Christina Milian. In the clip, Milian rolls around in — and then covers herself with — what appears to be black oil. In "Tonight," Aguilera douses herself in the same black liquid, though this appears to be black milk. Perhaps it's a nod to the Detroit rapper/producer of the same name? Probably not.

"Express Yourself": Truthfully, there are several Madonna videos referenced in "Not Myself Tonight," but especially this iconic 1989 clip helmed by David Fincher. More than anything, it appears to be the primary influence on Aguilera's clip, from the monocle Xtina wears to the Fritz Lang-ian sets. Other similarities? In "Express Yourself," Madonna crawls across the floor and laps milk out of a bowl, just like Christina. Both clips feature "dancing in the rain" sequences and gratuitous guy-on-girl groping. Not like we're complaining about that last one, to be honest.

"Freedom! '90": Supermodel-packed George Michael video also directed by Fincher. When Christina torches her closet in "Tonight," it appears to be a direct homage to Michael's video, though we're fairly certain when Fincher set fire to Michael's iconic leather jacket (which was also hanging in a closet) there was some sort of deeper meaning intended.

Hair: Filamentous cells containing keratin that grow from follicles in the dermis (not the Broadway play, though, come to think of it, that works too). In "Tonight," Christina's many hairstyles recall style icons like Bettie Page, Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani and Gaga. Also, her blown-and-bedazzled 'do reminds us of a similar style she rocked in the "Lady Marmalade" video.

"Human Nature": Incredibly S&M-heavy Madonna video from 1995 (it's also the one where she has cornrows.) By popular demand, we added this clip to our Cheat Sheet, and to be honest, we sort of can't believe we forgot it. The influence on "Tonight" is pretty evident, most notably in Christina's leather get-ups, her dominatrix attitude and the sultry chair-related activities she engages in throughout.

Jackson, Michael: Late, great King of Pop. One could argue that basically everything in the "Tonight" video is an homage to MJ's greatness, but we'd be remiss if we didn't point out the crotch-grab-apalooza that Xtina and her dancers engage in at one point. Tributes take many forms, it would appear.

"Like A Prayer": Legendarily controversial Madonna clip. There's no burning crosses or black Jesus in "Tonight," but the church in which Christina and her cohorts cavort does seem rather familiar now, doesn't it?

Voldo: Spindly, S&M-themed character from the "Soul Calibur" video games. When Aguilera stuffs a studded ball-gag in her mouth in the "Tonight" video, she bears an eerie resemblance to Voldo, right down to the barely there outfit. Though, we suspect that probably wasn't what she was going for.

Did we miss anything in the "Not Myself Tonight" video? Let us know in the comments below!

Bret Michaels' Doctor: 'Bret's Will To Live Is Undeniable'

Doctor says Michaels' condition remains serious, tests will continue.
By MTV News staff

According to a statement posted late Friday (April 30) on Bret Michaels' official website, the singer is receiving treatment for the brain hemorrhage he suffered last week at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona — one of the world's top neurological centers and is the home of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center. The statement said Michaels' location was not previously revealed "due to the severity of his life-threatening condition, the instantaneous way in which the hemorrhage presented itself and respect for his family."

Dr. Joseph Zabramski, the neurosurgeon who is leading Michaels' treatment team, said in the statement, "There is no doubt that Mr. Michaels' condition is serious. We are treating the subarachnoid hemorrhage, which caused his severe cranial pain. Mr. Michaels will continue to undergo testing considering we have hit a few roadblocks including hyponatremia, severe cranial and back pain suffered from blood drainage, an emergency appendectomy performed a week earlier and a lifelong history of Type 1 Diabetes.

"However, Bret's sheer will to live and fully recover is undeniable," Zabramski continued. "He has an unbelievable fight in him and told me what kept him alive at the moment of the hemorrhage was that he 'did not want his family to wake up and see him lying unconscious in the middle of the floor.' It was a combination of Bret's fight to stay conscious during the hemorrhage and get to the emergency room and the immediate medical attention provided by our staff at Barrow that enabled us to stabilize his condition."

A press conference will be held at 12 p.m. local time Tuesday (May 4) at Barrow to discuss Michaels' treatment and prognosis in detail.

Michaels' sister Michelle told a Nebraska radio station on Wednesday that she'd spoken with her brother recently. "Things are definitely looking up," she said. "He sounded good — as good as you can when your brain's throbbing. He seems very coherent to me and like he knew what he was saying. ... [He] does sound like Bret. Truth be told, I think he'll outlive us all."

'Kiss teamed up with DJs Drama and Green Lantern for this Mayweather-Mosley-themed mixtape -- a Mixtape Daily special!

No matter what happens in the big Floyd "Money" Mayweather vs. "Sugar" Shane Mosley bout on Saturday, it'll have a hard time topping the excitement on the new Champ Is Here 3 mixtape by Jadakiss and DJs Drama and Green Lantern. 'Kiss is already legendary, but the lines on this one are as immaculate as ever.

"The game is all Jada's/ Something hot drop, I get 'em in all flavors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals," he spits. "He's a di--, you a p---y, y'all neighbors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals/ MJ of the Pro-Tools, anti-social."

We don't need to say much more than that! Our money is Money May and of course 'Kiss. Shout to DJ Drama and Green Lantern who hosted this one on the tag team. It's a "Gangsta Grillz Invasion."

This Week's Main Pick

Street Kings: Jadakiss, Green Lantern and DJ Drama

Holding It Down For: Legendary hip-hop

Mixtape Album: The Champ Is Here 3

Real Spit: As promised, the biggest event in hip-hop right now is here: Jadakiss' Gangsta Grillz Invasion, The Champ Is Here 3. 'Kiss' collabo with Green Lantern and DJ Drama has been strategically planned to drop on the same day that Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley are getting it on in the ring: tomorrow, May 1. This time around, though, Jada isn't pushing an album (at press time he was only three or four songs deep into his next LP, Top Five, Dead or Alive).

"The regular formula for the first two was drop the mixtape right when I finished the album," Jada added. "I just shifted it on you this time: Give you the mixtape then go finish the album. Let you compare it with the albums that's coming out while I'm in the kitchen."

Kiss' mixtapes have been so dope, he's often found himself competing with himself.

"That's another reason why it's good to drop it before, so I won't have that problem," Jada laughed. "It'll just be creating pandemonium everywhere instead of competing with my own album. It might be better to do it this way. We gonna keep switching it around. We might do another one this way, but we gonna switch the pattern up so they can't follow."

Guests on the tape include Yo Gotti and Nicki Minaj — and that's just to start it off.

"We got some underground artists, some high-class artists, some of them good, down-bottom artists. It takes you all around. You definitely gonna rock out for Memorial Day, for the summer."

"There's some surprises on this joint, even with just his features," Lantern continued. "We never had features outside of the Lox. But we have some nice surprises."

Green and Jada have been rocking on this series since the start. They called Drama into the fold for the third.

"I got the phone call one day. Green been in [Atlanta] recently, invading the airwaves, invading the city," Drama told of his participation. "We been looking for a project to do for a couple years now. Green called and said, 'We making the mixtape game exiting again. It's fun. We're moving around brands. What do you think about coming on board for this Champ Is Here 3? It made perfect sense. I been on my New York sh-- heavy. Green is in the A, 'Kiss being the legend he is — three very important and crucial brands in hip-hop. Stupid!"

Joints To Check For:

"Bang" "You know what I'm spitting already," Jada laughed. "That's self-explanatory. The content is just fight dialogue, workout dialogue, getting ready for the fight. What I'll do to you before or after the fight."

"Here I Go" (featuring Yo Gotti) "Yo Gotti is poppin," Jada said. "He's been doing his thing for a while in the South. I feel he's an underdog like me. He do his thing but he don't get the props he should get. Those are the people I rock with the hardest. He don't care, he knows what he's doing despite what anybody might think. I respect him for that."

"It's a problem man," Dram concurs. "We wanted to give them something they wasn't expecting and haven't heard. The beat on 'Here I Go,' it felt right. Mystikal is home. We used his beat."

"Who Shot Ya?" "Rest in peace B.I.G. Big shout to Nasheem," Kiss — who rapped over Biggie's classic track, said. "You can't really play with that. I took shots at y'all [the MTV Hip-Hop Brain Trust] on there ... Not really, just getting y'all back. Big up to them ["Hottest MCs in the Game"] lists. I don't let them lists discourage me because the people who make the list, the people who's on the lists, [watch out for my] new album, Top Five, Dead or Alive."

"Listen," Green adds. "I heard it for the first time a couple of days ago. I had to stop for a minute. This is special. You just can't go regular on that beat, so I just stopped. I had to take a minute and really concentrate on that one. He came off. He wrapped it up. Blood on the floor at the end of that one!"

Eminem's <i>Recovery</i> To Include 'Dark' Track By Mobb Deep's Havoc

'I try to think outside the box but not go too far with it,' Hav says of new track.

In a departure from his previous albums, the bulk of Eminem's forthcoming Recovery (due June 22) is being made by other producers. Just Blaze was announced as a major contributor last year, and in recent weeks Jim Jonsin (Beyoncé, Lil Wayne), Boi-1da (Drake), DJ Khalil (Clipse, Drake) were confirmed. Dr. Dre, of course, will handle some production duties as well.

On Thursday, Emimen revealed one more name, telling Shade 45 morning show host Angela Yee that Mobb Deep's Havoc also made the cut. The announcement was news to Hav, who was still waiting on confirmation.

"I honestly didn't think I was gonna make the project, but when I heard I did, I was definitely happy about it," Havoc told MTV News.

Eminem has been a longtime fan of Mobb Deep, and Hav has been trying to land a beat on a project with the Detroit lyricist for just as long. He told MTV News that he provided Slim Shady with a dark number featuring an interesting sample loop, which he wouldn't reveal just yet.

"When it came to him, it's like, I really didn't want to give him a track that he was already kind of familiar with rhyming to," Havoc said. "I just wanted to do me and doing me consists of doing all kinds of different styles than what they associate me with, which is dark-sounding. The track that I did for him, it's dark and at the same time it can go across the board as far as the content in the sample and what it's saying. I try to think outside the box but not go too far with it. I think I met myself somewhere in the middle, and I hit him with a track and it worked."

Since releasing last year's The Hidden Files, the New York producer is in between projects at the moment as he awaits the released of incarcerated Mobb Deep partner Prodigy.

Invoking the Notorious B.I.G.'s name in rhyme can be overwhelming for any MC, but Jay Electronica took the challenge in stride. The New Orleans rapper released a new track on Friday (April 30) boldly titled "The Ghost of Christopher Wallace."

The song even features the iconic late rapper's old producer and friend Diddy, who's up to his old ad-libbing antics on the track.

But Jay Elect said the song was meant to inspire a mood more than serve as a tribute to the slain rap superstar. "I like a lot of the music that's out [now], but I don't get excited like I used to get about rap music," he told Shade 45 morning host Angela Yee. "More often than not when I click on new music and it feels good and I like it, it can be good, it can be great, but I don't necessarily get that feeling I used to get. I just think when Big was around, that time period when people used to rhyme, it was more than just the rhyme and the skill, it was the spirit of the person that you could tap in to. I really wanted to invoke that energy."

The rapper said he recruited the song's producer, Quincey Tones, via Twitter and offered Diddy a sneak peek of the song. The Bad Boy Records mogul approved of the track and offered to hop onboard.

"Fasten your seatbelts," Diddy whispers after Jay's rap: "All aboard, it's the last train, Soul train/ A bottle of Ciroc will turn a private jet to Soul Plane/ Put your seats back and trays down and feet up, 'cause we about to heat up."

In the track, which is still unfinished according to the rapper's manager, Jay Electronica continues his trend of literary references in rhyme, as he name-checks "War and Peace" author Leo Tolstoy as well as Dostoyevsky.

"The flow's so Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoy, half oyster, half shrimp, fully dressed po-boy," he raps.

Jay Electronica is currently working on a number of projects, including a collaborative effort with Nas and another with Mos Def and Curren$y.

M.I.A. 'Born Free' Video Kid Says Clip 'Shows Violence To End Violence'

Ian Hamrick adds, 'M.I.A. was a sweetheart.'
By James Montgomery

Toward the end of M.I.A.'s incendiary "Born Free" video, there's a horrifying slow-motion scene in which 12-year-old Ian Hamrick — one of the redheaded "minorities" rounded up by armed police officers — is shot in the head, then collapses to the ground as blood spurts from the wound.

Not surprisingly, Hamrick's parents weren't too excited when he was first cast in the video (his dad is a retired cop), but he persisted and eventually they allowed him to take part. And for the young actor, it was actually an opportunity to make a powerful statement. Because, as he revealed to TMZ, he's pretty deep for a 12-year-old.

"I think she was trying to show violence to end violence," Hamrick told the site Thursday. "The video is definitely not for kids — I haven't even seen the full video myself — but for all the adults and people in different countries who are doing that in real life ... doing the genocides to whatever: Italians, Africans, wherever it's from, it's still genocide. So it's showing violence to end violence."

Hamrick also told TMZ that he had met with the production team behind "Born Free" before signing on for the video, and was well aware of the grisly storyline. He also wants it to be known that "M.I.A. was a sweetheart."

In the meantime, debate continues to rage over the content of the video, which, while not entirely "banned" from YouTube, has been carefully hidden by YouTube's staff after enough viewers flagged the clip for objectionable content. A report on Wired.com cites a spokesperson for the site as saying that, while YouTube didn't pull the video, it did place it behind an age-restriction click through, rendering it impossible to find unless you already know the URL.

What do you think of M.I.A.'s "Born Free" video? Be warned: it's extremely violent.

Cam'ron, Jim Jones Talking Dipset Reunion: 'The Deal Is On The Table'

'We speak a few times a week,' Cam says.

There's nothing official yet, but Diplomat fans can get ready to rejoice: Cam'ron says that he and Jim Jones are now in constant conversation and that a deal is being put together for a new Dip Set LP.

"Realistically, we working out business," Cam'ron told website Nowwut.com today. "Me and Jim are speaking. I don't want people to think me and Jim aren't speaking," Cam'ron said. "We speak a few times a week. Right now, we talking out the business. The deal is on the table. But until the business gets situated, it's [Cam's group], the U.N.; me and [protégé] Vado. We not about to stop. All the bosses meet at the roundtable. To be honest, we missed out on a lot of money on the Diplomat thing the first time. I'm not moving on nothing Diplomat until the business gets done. But it's close to getting done. Right now I don't want to mislead nobody and say it's not U.N. right now."

On Monday, Cam sat down with DJ Green Lantern, but the rapper dodged questions about a Dipset reunion, divulging only, "Me and Vado are putting out four albums this year ... I'm with the U.N. right now, Green. It's me and Vado, we doing the U.N. I'm focused though."

The Dips first told radio personality Miss Info of their reunion, at least, news that the pair were getting back to friendly terms, earlier this month.

"It's 2010, and this is something I gotta get off my chest," Jones told Info. "You've known us from back when we didn't have what we have now, so you remember, that above all, me and Cam, we still brothers. And we're building on getting back on track. But first, I apologize for being a rude brother, for saying things publicly without first trying to handle them privately. I apologize for not leading by example because what I didn't realize at the time, I was venting but it wasn't all about me. There were other people whose dreams were also part of this movement. So, by not leading by example, they were left stranded too. The way I handled our business issues was with emotion, and it got totally f---ed up. That's what selfishness does."

"There's nothing really Diplomats-related to show you yet," Cam told Info. "We all have our own obligations right now, our own projects. I have this Boss of All Bosses Pt. 2.5 mixtape with Vado and DJ Drama dropping soon. But yes, me and Jim have been speaking, we're working out the mechanics of this, and looking at our options right now. If it makes sense, it can happen."

Gorillaz Bring <i>Plastic Beach</i> To Life In London

Damon Albarn and crew bring their live show to his hometown.
By James Montgomery

Gorillaz's Damon Albarn performs at London's Roundhouse on Thursday
Photo: MTV

There was a British orchestra dressed up as Russian sailors. A New York City rapper made up to look like Abraham Lincoln. Members of the Clash wearing captain's hats. Swedish and Japanese singers performing barefoot. A high-stepping brass ensemble from Chicago. What can we say? When Gorillaz put on a show, they really put on a show.

On Friday (April 30), Damon Albarn unleashed his animated all-stars on a sold-out crowd at London's Roundhouse theater (a performance streamed live on MTV.com) and he spared no expense, filling the stage with a seven-piece string section (the Sinfonia ViVA), a blaring army of horns (Chicago's Hypnotic Brass Ensemble), a massive backing band (that included former Clash-men Mick Jones and Paul Simonon) and more than a few special guests — all gathered together to perform tracks off the Gorillaz' new Plastic Beach album.

It was a show that was equal parts fierce and fragile, nasty and pretty, boomingly loud one minute, achingly quiet the next — sort of like the album itself. Things kicked off with the hushed strings of the Sinfonia and a beamed-in appearance from Snoop Dogg, who appeared on a video screen dressed as a sea captain and strutted his way through the Beach intro "Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach."

Then the full Gorillaz ensemble launched headlong into the throbbing "Stylo," featuring vocals from Bobby Womack and the mighty Mos Def (who rapped through what appeared to be a C.B. microphone). That was followed by the dreamy "Rhinestone Eyes," which saw Albarn finally step to the front of the stage — he had spent the first portion of the show tinkering with a piano in the background — while electronics chimed and wooshed around him.

The show then segued into quieter fare — "Broken," which got a soulful boost from the Hypnotic Brass and the Sinfonia, and "Empire Ants," featuring Little Dragon frontwoman Yukimi Nagano on vocals. The Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music was trotted out for an extended, intricate jam, a transcendental few minutes that crashed right into "White Flag," featuring hyped-up cameos from Brit rappers Bashy and Kano (and Albarn waving an actual white flag).

A thumping, super-electro take on "Superfast Jellyfish" was up next, with frequent Gorillaz collaborators De La Soul serving as frontmen (and Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys singing the hook). Then Mos Def appeared once again — decked out in a stovepipe hat that, when coupled with his chin beard, made him look a whole lot like Abraham Lincoln, even if that wasn't the intended effect — to serve as a sort of carnival barker on "Sweepstakes," backed by the powerful Hypnotic Brass.

As the crowd cheered wildly, Albarn again stepped to the front of the stage to duet with Nagano on a bittersweet "To Binge" and, after a few tender moments, Womack emerged again to perform a moody "Cloud of Unknowing," the penultimate track on Beach.

And then, it was over — a breakneck hour filled with highlights, all directed by Albarn. As the band exited the stage, he looked happy, but exhausted. And who can blame him? This, after all, was a show.

Christina Aguilera's Fans Weigh In On 'Not Myself Tonight Video'

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 04:01 AM PDT

'Christina is a pop-cultural reflection of the world,' one fan says.
By Eric Ditzian

Christina Aguilera is back, and she didn't bring a whole lot of clothing with her. The star's "Not Myself Tonight" video showcases the 29-year-old singer in one revealing outfit after another — a chain-mail bikini, a see-through raincoat, some red lingerie — in a pop-culture mashup that pays tribute to Madonna, Michael Jackson and others. It's quite a rebirth for Aguilera as she gets set to unleash Bionic, her first studio album since 2006. And, on an otherwise sleepy Friday afternoon, the video has been burning up the Web.

"I just love it," says MTV reader dvnovert. "Christina is a pop-cultural reflection of the world. She breathes in culture just like all of us, but expels [it in] a deliciously fresh and exciting and superior way to all that have come before and all who have come since. Christina is the one to beat: beauty, brains, rhythm, voice and charisma to boot!"

Many fans have noted similarities between the video and recent efforts from Lady Gaga. Reader Mark Anthony Sanchez, for one, views Aguilera as the true artistic trailblazer. "I love the direction she is taking her music," he writes. "Since her start she was doing her own thing and not caring what anybody says. This woman has been around 10-plus years and for anybody to pin her against Gaga is seriously dumb. They are their own person and do their own thing."

MTV reader Rbearcuub agrees, writing, "You cannot even compare them. What do they have in common? Music! Gaga at least sings, unlike [Britney] Spears in concert. But she has her lane and Xtina has her own damn highway."

Comparisons aside, some folks simply weren't digging the video. "Christina used to give videos that were fresh and edgy with meaning and integrity," wrote reader Ericstar. "This oversexed video reveals a huge awareness among her people that she is now competing on the same platform as Gaga. The video lacks depth and does no more than try to prove that Christina is more advanced than the new top female in her arena. She's relying strictly on fetish to do it. If Christina disagrees with the comparisons and feels like Gaga has borrowed one too many pages from her book, she ought to be confident enough to challenge herself and step out in a new direction."

But as most fans realize, that's exactly what she already is doing. "I think what Christina did was amazing," reader Marco wrote. "I love her video and I can't wait to have Bionic. You rock Christina, you are the best."

What do you think of Christina's new video? Let us know in the comments below!
