Chris Brown Says He's 'Confused' About His Public Perception In MTV News Special

Posted: 05 Nov 2009 03:50 AM PST

'I got the people that will come out and support and then the people that don't wanna see me do anything,' he says during 'Chris Brown: The Interview,' airing Friday at 6 p.m.

RICHMOND, VirginiaChris Brown pleaded guilty to assault back in June after a physical confrontation with then-girlfriend Rihanna. He was formally sentenced in August to one year of weekly therapy sessions, five years' probation and 180 days of community-labor service.

But when it comes to the court of public opinion, Brown is discovering that the ruling hasn't been nearly as swift and tidy.

"I'm confused right now as far as the public perception [of me]," he revealed during the upcoming MTV News special "Chris Brown: The Interview," which airs Friday, November 6, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. "Like, I think with my fans, they still love me, they support me, definitely. You have those people who will support you. So it's kinda like 50/50 for me. I got the people that will come out and support and then the people that don't wanna see me do anything. They basically want me in jail."

Many critics felt Brown got off the hook too easily for the altercation, which left Rihanna battered and bruised. But his sentence might, in fact, be just as difficult as jail time, according to legal expert Peter Haven.

"Labor service is not a walk in the park," Haven explained to MTV News shortly after the sentencing. "It may be better than spending 180 days in jail, but it's not a walk in the park. ... Remember, if he violates [anything], it'll be a violation against his whole plea agreement."

Brown has recently begun taking the first steps to resurrecting his career. He returned to the stage last week for the first time since the incident and electrified those in attendance at the New York radio festival Powerhouse '09. The singer was energetic and also very eager to show his remorse during his set, telling fans he promised to be a better man.

Next, Brown will set out on a Fan Appreciation Tour later this month, where he'll perform at smaller venues beginning in Houston and finishing up December 15 in New York.

Chris Brown opens up about the February assault and its aftermath in "Chris Brown: The Interview," airing Friday, November 6, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Lady Gaga Loves Working With 'Up-And-Coming' Artists Like Adam Lambert

'They called me and told me Adam really wanted me to write for him,' she recalls.

Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert are both splashy, glamorous pop singers, so having Gaga write a song for the "American Idol" runner-up's forthcoming debut album, For Your Entertainment, felt like a natural fit. When Lambert's camp approached the over-the-top singer to contribute a song to the album (which hits stores the same week as her The Fame Monster re-release), she had just the right song for him.

"I saw him on the set backstage when I did 'American Idol,' but I didn't really know him. They called me and told me Adam really wanted me to write for him," she told MTV News, adding that the song "Fever" felt just right for Lambert. "And I had this song that I had already done that I thought would have been perfect, so we went into the studio."

Although Gaga's solo career is rising at an explosive rate, she said she loves hooking up with other newer artists and nurturing their careers.

"I actually really love working with younger, up-and-coming artists that I can kind of bring to the forefront, someone like [my tour opener] Semi Precious Weapons or Wale," she said. "I do the same thing in fashion. I help promote young designers."

But Gaga was also onboard when a certain well-established artist came calling. "When it comes to Beyoncé, that was the right collaboration," she said.

Lambert's For Your Entertainment drops November 23, while Gaga's The Fame Monster hits stores the next day.

Drake Calls Rihanna's Rated R 'A Great Album'

'I'm excited for her. She deserves everything that she gets,' Drake says.

Anticipation is high for the November 23 release of Rihanna's new album, Rated R. and one of the album's biggest boosters is 2009 breakout star (and Rihanna pal) Drake.

"Rihanna has a great album," the MC told Rap-Up.com. "She's got great records that she's using, she's got great records that she's not even using that she has for a later date. I'm excited for her. She deserves everything that she gets."

One of the songs that didn't make the cut is a duet between Rihanna and Drake that was produced by Norwegian hitmakers Stargate, who'd previously worked with Rihanna on "Unfaithful" and "Take a Bow."

"We did do some great work together and hopefully it'll find its place on some project one day," Drake said, without revealing the song's title. "The record we have is great. It's a special record, so for it not to make it, I know something had to click. It's all good. I think the project's gonna be great no matter what."

He did, however, say that he was surprised by the selection of the eerie "Russian Roulette" as the album's first single. "It's a cool little record," he allowed. "I don't know if personally that's the route I would've gone for a single choice. I can only say that because I've been around and heard the music that she's coming with other than that record."

Drake said he was met with a similar reaction for his "Best I Ever Had" video, which didn't get the warmest reception from some fans. "We all make personal choices," he said. "It's like the same way I shot a certain type of video for 'Best I Ever Had.' Maybe that's where she's at emotionally right now. I think if I heard it in the mix with the other ones, I would probably find more appreciation for it as opposed to it being the only thing that people are hearing from her right now after so long."

Rumors swirled about a budding romance between Rihanna and Drake earlier this year when they were spotted getting close in New York, but Drake quickly quashed them, saying she's "just a friend, that's all."

Taylor Swift Talks Fearless Re-Release, New Songs

Taylor Swift is still breaking records with her self-titled debut album. But her latest album Fearless — which she just re-released last week — is also still resonating with audiences. It's been incredibly successful and launched Swift into the mainstream pop-music stratosphere. Swift appreciates all the success and attributes it to the honesty she shows in her songwriting.

"I think with Fearless and with my first album, I've just written songs about what I go through. I was a teenager in the music industry and so you have a lot of people pitching you songs that are kind of older than what you've been through," she explained to MTV News. "But I always kind of insisted on writing my own songs and writing songs about the period of time I was actually going through in life."

She explains that for her, it's not about looking ahead for material — it's about seeing what's going on right there in front of you. "I write in real time. I try not to go too far ahead of myself," she said. "I guess 'cause my songs were so personal, people were able to relate to them."

Many fan favorites are found on the album, but she has included new songs, such as the bright "Jump Then Fall." "It's really bouncy and happy and lovey," she said. "It's got this really cool banjo part that's, like, bouncy and ... I don't know, it just has a really good feel-good vibe to me."

Andre 3000 Gives Atlanta MC Pill His 'Stamp Of Approval'

Fire Starter: Pill

We're going ham! All this month in Fire Starter, we're going to be bringing some of the emerging talent from the South who we feel you should be up on. First up is Pill, who's already gotten props from one of the best to ever do it. Andre 3000 gave the Atlanta MC kudos for his mixtape 4180: The Prescription.

"To have his stamp of approval, me being from the A and idolizing them — him and Big [Boi] — for him to hit you and quote your lines on the tape, I was like, 'Oh!' " Pill said. "I was like, 'For real? That's what's up! I appreciate it.' He's top-five to me. ... I was like, 'I might know how to rap a little bit.' " Pill is a former protégé of onetime Outkast affiliate Killer Mike but has since ventured out on his own. While handing out copies of his mixtape earlier this year, he bumped into Three Stacks and gave him a tape. Andre called the next day with compliments.

"I didn't think he'd ever listen to it or ever say nothing about it," Pill said. "That gave me some more fuel to keep going. I was like, 'OK, yeah, maybe I need to actually keep on going.' "

Dre is just one of many to join Pill's fanbase since 4180: The Prescription came out in February. The tape has generated enough interest that Pill has been performing at clubs and high-profile events such as the recent CMJ Music Seminar. The mixtape's frantically paced "Trap Goin' Ham" has been one of the year's big underground sleeper hits. The equally gritty video and ode to a day in the trap had people wondering what the hell "goin' ham" meant. He said "ham" is slang for "mayhem."

"It's just a street term we use down there. 'Ham' is just like off the meter," Pill explained. "Don't nobody know where it originates from. I ain't going to sit here lying, like, 'Oh, I made that up.' That's just a slang term in the A. Everybody said, 'That thing going ham.' I just thought of making a song about the trap goin' ham."

Pill also pointed out that "ham" is a universal term that could apply to the trap, a strip club or a ten-piece of chicken.

On Tuesday, Pill released the Bizness-produced "Hear Somebody Comin'," which is the first song from his new mixtape 4075: The Refill, due November 17.

Dame Dash: 'I Don't Have Beef' With Beanie Sigel, Jay-Z

'No beef! None of that. I don't have beef with nobody,' former Roc-A-Fella mogul says.
By Shaheem Reid

Dame Dash just laughs off stories about how he is supposedly in dire straits financially. He gets so much of a kick out of it that he doesn't rush to defend himself against the rumors. These days, Dame is back where he started, making music independently along with brokering art and producing television.

Dash has a complex in lower Manhattan, DD172, where he has two music studios and an art gallery, and also publishes a magazine and maintains CreativeControl.tv. Mos Def has dubbed the building the "24/7 karate school" because of all of the artists that come through and work together, including Mos, the Black Keys, Jay Electronica, Jim Jones, the RZA, Raekwon the Chef and producer Ski (Reasonable Doubt) to name a few.

Dash says everyone is welcome, just as long as no one brings negativity.

"I'm not teaching violence. No beef! None of that. I don't have beef with nobody."

Dash's name has popped up in headlines dealing with Beanie Sigel's recent lash-out against Jay-Z. During some recent interviews, Beans accused Dash of shady business dealings when the two were putting out the State Property PRO-Keds sneakers.

"Him and the licensee who licensed Rocawear went behind my back and obtained the license to the company that was licensing PRO-Keds and stopped making the State Property PRO-Keds," Beans said on Philadelphia radio station Power 99. "It was all geared towards Roc-A-Wear."

Dame said he did not want to address any specifics regarding Sigel, but did say he did not want any beef.

"I love Jay, I love Beans — what's the reason for beef?" Dash responded. "That's stupid. What's the reason for beef? People die, people don't feel good — I want people to laugh. What's up, y'all?"

Dame was shocked to hear Beanie on the radio.

"I was surprised. I was hurt for him, more or less, because I know that ain't him," Dash said. "But I don't want to speak on that. Whatever [Beanie's] going through where he's got to do that ... I could understand where he may look at things and feel that way. I can see that. He's probably got a lot of people around him and nobody to really tell him what's going on. It was a different environment for Roc-A-Fella back then. I feel bad for those cats. I love those cats. I hate that they struggle. I hate it. I hate to see anybody struggle. I don't embrace that. I'm not one of those dudes that get happy when I hear something bad about somebody I had a bond with. I really loved those dudes. You see Ski down there, I knew Ski for 20 years. That's my man. Sometimes people have different agendas for why they don't wanna be my friend. But at the end of the day, I'm always there for them."

On November 27, Dash releases the first album from his Black Roc label — the next LP from the Black Keys, under the name Blackroc. The album features Jim Jones, the RZA, Raekwon the Chef, Mos Def, Q-Tip, Billy Danze and Pharoahe Monch.

Rihanna will be performing at this year's American Music Awards, joining previously announced acts like Eminem, Jay-Z, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys and the Black Eyed Peas, MTV News has confirmed.

The show airs on Sunday, November 22, the day before Rihanna releases her new album, Rated R. At press time there was no word on what song she will perform, but she's already dropped two singles from the album — the eerie ballad "Russian Roulette" and the midtempo "Wait Your Turn" — and the Young Jeezy collaboration "Hard" has already hit radio.

It will be the third time she's performed on the show. In 2007, she sang her Ne-Yo duet, "Hate That I Love You," and her breakthrough hit, "Umbrella." In 2008, she sang "Rehab." Rihanna has won three American Music Awards in the past.

The awards show will feature an array of nominees determined by data from Nielsen SoundScan radio and retail figures, with Taylor Swift in the lead with six nominations, followed by the late Michael Jackson and Eminem at five apiece. Though Jackson had not released new material for nearly a decade at the time of his passing, his nominations are based on the strong sales of his catalog albums following his death.

Other multiple-category nominees include Lady Gaga, T.I., Kings of Leon, Beyoncé and the Peas, who all have three. For the third year, winners will be determined by online voting.

Rihanna will appear on "Good Morning America" on Thursday and "20/20" Friday night. She's also set to visit MTV's "It's On With Alexa Chung" on Monday.

Beanie Sigel Slams Jay-Z, Might Join G-Unit

'I'm gonna put my foot on his neck until [Jay] responds,' Beans says in radio interview with 50 Cent.

Beanie Sigel says he's still not getting the reply from Jay-Z that he wants. On Tuesday, the Broad Street Bully appeared on Philadelphia radio station Power 99 as a surprise guest during 50 Cent's interview. The two hinted that Beanie and the G-Unit would be aligning sometime in the future. More overt, however, was the suggestion that Beans would be calling Jay out in public more often.

"He is a crumb. I'm gonna put my foot on his neck until he responds," Beans said as the segment came to a wrap. Beans added that he's ready for a lyrical tangle with his once-close clique member and that he would relish a retort from Jiggaman for the "What You Talkin About (Average Cat)" song.

"Please make a record," Beans yelled on-air. "A week's been out, dog. I'm not taking nothing from Jay as an artist. He ain't no walk in the park as an artist. All I'm saying is I don't gotta jog to keep up to him."

During the interview, Beanie also addressed Jay's recent comments that he did a lot for Sigel, who Jay noted had a record deal and a record label and drove two Bentleys at one point. Sigel said that the label and the cars were earned and that Jay didn't give him anything.

"I think he has good intentions, Jay, but he's using a traditional business corporate model," 50 said calmly. "I think the only place he really went wrong was when he said 'La Familia,' like 'we family.' "

50 added that a few years back, he wanted to offer Beanie at least $800,000 to come to the G-Unit upon his release from prison but that Jay had blocked the deal.

"I said it makes sense right now, I could sell this right now, I could get him out and go right away with the actual music," 50 recalled about the deal that never materialized.

Lady Gaga and Beyoncé have apparently found a quite a kinship in one another and have become good friends quickly. While it might seem that the two superstars would be worlds apart it terms of image, sound and vibe, but at the end of the day there's no question that they're two of the hardest working women in pop music today.

And perhaps those personality traits made it easy for the two of them to bond and collaborate with one another. Since the 2009 Video Music Awards, where both women won awards, their paths have been crossing quite frequently — and they've worked together on two projects so far.

The first to appear will be Beyoncé's clip for "Video Phone." Not many details have emerged about the Hype Williams-helmed video, which was shot in Brooklyn, New York, last month.

The pair also collaborated on a new song, "Telephone," that will appear on the forthcoming deluxe reissue of Gaga's debut LP, dubbed The Fame Monster, which includes eight new songs and is slated for release on November 23 (Gaga's Monster Ball Tour launches in Montreal four days later).

Gaga had nothing but praise for B when she sat down with MTV News for a long interview on Tuesday.

"You know she is such a beautiful person, and I gotta tell you, I just adore her," she said. "I had kind of lost faith a little bit in meeting artists in the business — and then I met Beyoncé."

She also spoke briefly about how much fun the two of them have together. "She is a real, real woman," Gaga said. "I have never laughed so hard on a video set in my life. We had the best time doing 'Video Phone.' "

MTV News will have lots more from our sitdown with Lady Gaga in the coming days!

In case anyone was wondering if Taylor Swift is going to go there when she hosts "Saturday Night Live" this week, the answer is yes. The superstar isn't afraid to poke some fun at Kanye West's now-infamous VMA stage-crash.

In a promo shot Tuesday, the singer and "SNL" castmember Bill Hader put their spin on the encounter.

Standing in a 30 Rock corridor, the promo opens with Hader on his cell phone while Swift says, "Hey, I'm Taylor Swift, and I'll be the host and musical guest this week on 'SNL.' " As she completes her line, Hader gets off the phone and tells the star who he was talking to. "Whoops, Kanye West just called. He thinks Beyoncé should host instead," he said. "Funny joke, right?"

Swift rolls her eyes and whispers to herself, "Wow." Hader then awkwardly says, "Good times," before walking off the set whispering to himself, "Hader." The two share a laugh after they complete the sketch.

In an interview with MTV News before she went off to shoot the promo, she said nothing was off-limits this weekend. "I want to look nothing like myself," she said. "I told all the writers, 'Don't count anything out.' I want to go completely, 100 percent in. I don't want to be halfway involved. Just because I have a lot of things to do as far as being musical guest and host doesn't mean I don't want to live up to my full hosting demands."
