Fire Starter: Young Money

Young Money, baby! The Young Money album is slated for November 24, as is Lil Wayne's Rebirth LP, according to a source in his camp.

No doubt about it, the New Orleans Fireman is loaded. Rap's most popular mic king just kicked off Young Money Presents: The America's Most Wanted Music Festival, and one of Weezy's main goals on the tour is to make sure his Young Money artists get shine. While you know all about Drake (he's a Fire Starter alum), Nicki Minaj and newest member Omarion, we thought we'd put you onto game about the rest of the clique.

"Gudda, he's got this aggression about him," Wayne told us about the artist who's been with him the longest. Gudda Gudda has been riding with Wayne since he was a teenager on Cash Money.

"What people don't know, Gudda started rapping several years ago," Weezy added. "He started rapping because I said, 'I like your look. You should rap.' I wrote his first rap for him, and I never written another rap for him ever since that day I told him he should be a rapper."

Representing the younger faction are Lil Twist, who's on the tour riding his Segway scooter around, and Lil Chuckee, who uses his feet to cover ground backstage.

"His energy, he's a pure entertainer," Weezy said of Chuckee. Wayne is also a fan of Chuck's swag. "I know that kid is gonna make it. It's like in sports when you got that Kobe Bryant. You don't know what to do with him, whether to play him the guard, center, small forward — you just know we're gonna win with him."

Rounding out the clique are mostly names you've heard of: Mack Maine, Tyga, Jae Millz, D. Woods' sister Shanell (also known as SNL) and T-Streets.

"He's more like my brother," Wayne said of Streets. "He's been with me since Gudda. He's like my protector. Anybody wanna play games, T-Streets is right there. So I make sure T-Streets is on everything I do, always around."

'The Hills' Premiere Date Set

New season, featuring Kristin Cavallari, will premiere September 29 at 10 p.m. on MTV.

Ready, set, drama! "The Hills," minus Lauren Conrad, is set to return on September 29 at 10 p.m. on MTV. And when it does, a familiar face is set to make her comeback to reality TV. Of course, we mean Kristin Cavallari.

In addition to Cavallari's return to MTV, Audrina Patridge, Lo Bosworth, Heidi Montag and husband Spencer Pratt are all expected to get caught up in what occasional "Hills" co-star Holly Montag described as the "whirlwind" known as Cavallari.

"I've seen a little, but honestly, she came in like a whirlwind ever since the first day at the wedding, the Speidi wedding," Montag told MTV News.

And although Holly isn't sure how to handle the ensuing drama, her brother-in-law, Spencer, welcomes the whirlwind to the show. "There wouldn't be a 'Hills' if there wasn't a Kristin Cavallari, because the 'Laguna Beach' brand wouldn't have had the power," Spencer said. "We still love Lauren, we'd love to have you come back on the show. But hey, you were the calm, quiet girl trying to steal Kristin's boyfriend, the cool girl at the high school. So shout-out to the cool girl joining 'The Hills'!"

Cavallari herself has been quite open about the stir she's causing in the lives of the kids on the show and said that she felt it was time for her to come back.

"Well, I'm coming back for a few reasons," Cavallari explained in May. "One is they've been asking me to do 'The Hills' for a while now, and I just thought, what was the point of going on 'The Hills' when it was Lauren's show and all it would really do is relive high school drama, which was 'Laguna Beach.' So I thought with Lauren leaving, it's kind of the perfect time."

Exclusive: Spencer Smith Reveals New Members Of Panic! At The Disco

For two weeks, Spencer Smith sat idly by while his former bandmate, guitarist Ryan Ross, spoke at length about leaving Panic! at the Disco and venturing out on a career of his own. Late Wednesday (July 29), that all changed.

Smith spoke with MTV News about splitting with Ross and bassist Jon Walker — echoing Ross' sentiments, he called the decision "beyond amicable" — and his and Brendon Urie's decision to carry on under the Panic! at the Disco mantle.

"I suppose it's inevitable that our two bands will always be linked now ... sort of like what happened when Blink-182 split, with Angels & Airwaves and +44, or At the Drive-In split into Sparta and the Mars Volta," Smith said. "But that's just a media thing, really, a way to add something to the story. Brendon and I are still friends with Ryan and Jon, we really like their new band [the Young Veins], they really like our band, and we hope fans like both of them. There's thousands of songs on my iPod, there's room for both our bands on it.

"And with Brendon and I, really, there was never any doubt that we were going to carry on as Panic! Honestly, we wanted to move forward as the band," Smith added. "We're working on an album now that, hopefully, takes the best parts from both of our records ... because we love them both and are really proud of them."

But before Smith and Urie could move forward as Panic!, they had to come to terms with the past — something that's proven to be tough, given the reaction most fans have had to the split.

"It's one of those things where, it's sad for us to know, but at the same time, it's sort of heartwarming to know there's people that love your band that much that they would genuinely be upset that we were splitting apart," Smith said. "And I think that there was absolutely no way to get around that, and we have to keep reminding ourselves of that. And also knowing that it was the right decision, and as me and Brendon are moving forward and I'm sure Ryan and Jon are moving forward too. ... It's unfortunate that there's no way to sort of get around the initial fan reaction, but it makes sense, and it's amazing that they care about our band that much to really feel that way. Hopefully over the next few months, the music will amend that."

Oh, and about that music. Smith revealed exclusively to MTV News that — for the immediate future, at least — he and Urie have tapped a pair of their friends to join the band for their upcoming dates with Blink-182. Replacing Ross on guitar is Ian Crawford, who spent time with Panic!'s Decaydance labelmates the Cab. And on bass, it'll be singer/songwriter Dallon Weekes, mastermind behind Utah-based indie act the Brobecks.

"Yeah, we've taken on a couple of new guys for the tour. They're friends, so the decision was easy. Plus, we're really excited to play with them as musicians," Smith said. "Ian is probably the most talented guitar player that me and Brendon have ever played with, and Dallon is a really nice guy and a really great bassist. It's new. Like I said, we're really excited."

Lil Wayne is in no rush to put out his Rebirth LP. The record's release has been pushed back repeatedly, and no concrete date has been announced. Weezy says he's been working on the LP, but he's also been concentrating on getting his record company in order.

"Honestly, I'm just starting up this Young Money label and I'm trying to get my artists down right. Get everybody together," Weezy told MTV News. "Once I got that together, then I could work back on me. I'm a very humble person. I know once I get to it, I'mma get to it. So like I was saying, it's Young Money time, so making sure my artists get their just due."

On Monday night, Wayne kicked off his latest tour, Young Money Presents: The America's Most Wanted Music Festival. In addition to introducing his artists — from Drake to Nicki Minaj — throughout the show, Wayne carved out his own time with the audience. Weezy went from hip-hop to rock to pop during his set. He says the versatility of the music is indicative of what he's offering on Rebirth.

"The Rebirth album is just me expressing myself without any boundaries. Without any margins, without any guidelines," he said. "[I'm] trying to do something different. I told my record company, 'Don't tell me nothing about what I say. Don't tell me nothing about what you hear. Just get behind me.' That's what Rebirth is."

Wayne is on tour with the entire Young Money crew — as well as Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy Tell'em, Jeremih and Pleasure P — until September.

Shorty's kinda crazy, but it turns him on. Kanye West said it, not us, in the song that's becoming a video starring his girlfriend, Amber Rose.

"I have Kanye's 'Robocop' video," Rose told MTV News Monday night in Scranton, Pennsylvania, during the launch of the America's Most Wanted Music Festival. "I'm playing a robot through the whole video. Ninety-five percent of the video is just me."

Rose, who has appeared in such videos as Ludacris' "What Them Girls Like," said the rise of her profile over the past few months has been a welcome surprise.

"I have Complex mag, Elle magazine, Persona magazine — I have the cover to the back, the whole issue is dedicated to me," she said of her upcoming publicity appearances. "I'm excited about that.

"I definitely welcome it," she added. "I appreciate all my fans. I definitely never expected it. I don't wanna say I never wanted it. But ... I just know a lot of girls, they go to modeling agencies every single day. That's their life. A lot of stuff ... just landed in my lap. I thank God for that; it's really a blessing. I thank God for that — and Kanye, of course. Kanye definitely gave me the fast track to the top."

Rose was in Scranton to support her girl Nicki Minaj. The two first met on Twitter, then face to face on the set of Drake's "Best I Ever Had" video, which Kanye directed.

"She's a dope girl," Minaj said of Amber. "You can tell she's dope. I'm all about girls that are spearheading a movement. She's doing her own thing in her own lane. The world has yet to see what she's going to accomplish. Be on the lookout for that."

New Boyz Challenge Chris Brown To A Jerkin' Competition

'I called you out, Chris Brown!' Legacy jokes.

Every so often, a new dance craze comes along to captivate the hearts and minds of people all over the world. Whether it's the Macarena or Soulja Boy Tell'em's Crank That, the dance becomes a staple at summer barbeques, prom dance floors and, in more recent years, on teenagers' YouTube videos.

And this year, that craze seems to be jerkin'. The dance originated out of Southern California and has spread across the country thanks in part to videos of kids doing it on the Internet. The most prominent proponents of jerkin' culture have been the New Boyz with their song "You're a Jerk." The teen duo were fans of the movement and wanted to make it bigger. "People were making jerkin' music, but nobody was like doing anything with it," Legacy said. "We wanted to make it worldwide."

So when the group saw a video of Chris Brown doing the dance, they took a little exception.

"I seen Chris Brown jerkin' on YouTube, actually," Legacy said. "And it's crazy, 'cuz he's from Virginia, as everybody knows, so I'm like, 'He's always coming to California, getting a new dance.' "

He said that Brown previously came to California and took another SoCal dance, crumping (also spelled "krumping"), and ran with it; the choreography in Brown's early music videos show its influence. But Ben J said he didn't want the same thing to happen with jerkin,' and he challenged him to jerkin' battle — a jerk-off, if you must.

"I called you out, Chris Brown, that's what you wanted, dog!" he said. "I'm about to show you how the real California dudes jerk and where it started from."

However, the New Boyz said that there's no real beef. They said that they're about to make a song with Brown, and he's actually their friend.

"It's a friendly battle," Ben J said. "That's my boy! So I'm calling you out, Chris Brown, in front of all of the girls."

"It's going to be a biggest event ever," Ben boasted. "Ben J from the New Boyz, 'You're a Jerk, Chris Brown!', HBO pay-per-view," said Legacy. "It's not going to be on none of those shows, but it's still going to be the biggest event ever."

Demi Lovato Is 'Completely Ecstatic' Over #1 Debut

Here We Go Again will be #1 on the Billboard albums chart next week.

On Tuesday night, Demi Lovato achieved something most 16-year-olds only dream of: Her new album, Here We Go Again, will be #1 on the Billboard albums chart next week.

"It's great! I'm having a blast. I mean. never could I ever think I'd be this lucky," she told MTV News on Wednesday (July 29). "I'm excited. I was just completely ecstatic over it. I didn't know what to do! Last time I debuted at #2 [with Don't Forget] and so I thought if I could get close to that, that'd be awesome, so I was so excited."

The singer and Disney star said that she learned about her big debut before she hit the stage Tuesday night in Delaware. "[I found out] yesterday at my concert," she said. "I found at my [pre-show] prayer. We were all praying and somebody called."

Lovato was especially excited by the news since she feels the album is very personal, and she knows that her fans have been supportive of the move to write about events she's gone through in her life. "It's nice because now people get to see what I'm all about," she said. "And this album is more me and hopefully they like it. They've been able to relate to it a lot, which is really cool."

And Lovato got very personal on the album, noting that her favorite song, "Stop the World," which she worked on with friend Nick Jonas, is all about her love life. And although she didn't mention it as the inspiration, she did recently split from 20-year-old Metro Station frontman (and Miley's brother) Trace Cyrus.

"I put a lot of personal things into [it], and it just seems to be the story of my life," she said. "The song is basically about like falling in love with someone you shouldn't fall in love with, which is what I tend to do. ... Pretty much like waiting until you're older to be somebody."

Although the star has yet to figure out how she's going to celebrate, she does know that her schedule includes a lot more work — more touring, more TV and another album in the future.

"I continue my tour and then I film 'Camp Rock 2' and then I shoot the TV show ['Sonny With a Chance'] and hopefully make my third album. I think I'll probably throw a birthday party," she said about how she'll eventually celebrate on her 17th birthday next month. "And celebrate this at the same time."

Kelly Clarkson's Claims Are 'Hurtful And Absurd,' Ryan Tedder Says

Clarkson took OneRepublic frontman/ songwriter to task for similarities between her new single and Beyoncé's 'Halo.'

Over the weekend, after several blogs noticed the similarities between Kelly Clarkson's new single "Already Gone" and Beyoncé's hit "Halo," Clarkson did an interview in which she claimed she was unaware of "Halo" until she heard it on the radio — and then fought like crazy to keep her label from releasing "Gone" because the songs sounded too much alike.

She also went to great lengths to put the blame for the situation squarely on OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, who wrote both songs, saying that upon hearing "Halo," she called him and angrily asked why he had given the same song to two different artists.

"No one's gonna be sitting at home, thinking, 'Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyoncé and Kelly the same track to write to,' " Clarkson told Canada's CBC radio network. "No, they're just gonna be saying I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, 'I don't understand. Why would you do that?' "

On Wednesday (July 29), a spokesperson for Tedder sent MTV News a statement from the songwriter, who disagreed with Clarkson's — and several blogs' — assertions that "Already Gone" and "Halo" are based on the same song.

" 'Already Gone' is one of the best songs I've written or produced since [Leona Lewis'] 'Bleeding Love' and stands tall on its own merits apart from 'Halo,' " Tedder said in the statement. "They are two entirely different songs conceptually, melodically and lyrically, and I would never try to dupe an artist such as Kelly Clarkson or Beyoncé into recording over the same musical track. The idea is both hurtful and absurd."

Tedder didn't address Clarkson's claim that she fought her label's decision to have "Gone" released as a single, but he did urge fans to listen to both songs and decide for themselves if the tracks are similar.

"I think when people hear 'Already Gone,' they will hear what I hear — one of the greatest female vocalists on earth giving her most haunting and heartbreaking performances on a song she helped write," the statement continues. "I challenge people to listen and form their own opinions."

A spokesperson for Clarkson's label, RCA, did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the matter.

Silversun Pickups Win Over Metallica Fans, Make Their 'Darkest Video'

Frontman Brian Aubert calls upcoming 'Substitution' clip 'sort of depressing.'
By James Montgomery

Earlier this year, before Metallica thundered onstage at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, the Silversun Pickups were given the unenviable task of warming up an audience of over-served, overheated, die-hard metal fans.

It seemed like an odd choice for an opener: the swoony, alt-leaning Pickups yanking the curtain for Metallica, one of the hugest, heaviest acts on the planet. Somewhat surprisingly, however, things went off without a hitch.

"That crowd was amazing. ... Everyone was so stoked. We've never had that many people headbanging at our show before, and it was pretty cool," Silversun Pickups frontman Brian Aubert laughed. "It was a sea of black. I saw this guy who looked like he was 50 years old, he was bashing his head against a pole, just having the greatest time ever. It was pretty great, actually."

Afterward, they watched from the side of the stage as Metallica destroyed everything in their path. And, again, this was something the Pickups weren't exactly used to witnessing firsthand.

"We were getting sweat on by them, which was amazing. It put me in a place ... it was nostalgic," Aubert continued. "I saw them when I was really young, and being that close to a band that's been that large for 30 years, it's awe-inspiring. Because how many bands like that are there working today? Five? Plus, Robert Trujillo is like the most amazing bass player ever. We were all watching him. [Silversun bassist] Nikki [Monninger] was taking notes."

"He was in the pocket, and I try to be," Monninger laughed. "I love pockets."

The whole Metallica thing is a pretty good example of how the past three years have gone for the Pickups, who went from the most popular band in Los Angeles' trendy Silver Lake neighborhood to slightly oddball mainstays on modern-rock radio, thanks to the success of singles like "Lazy Eye" and "Well Thought Out Twinkles." They toured like crazy behind their full-length debut, 2006's Carnavas, then jumped right off the road into a studio, where they began work on the follow-up, Swoon.

The first single from that album, the angsty "Panic Switch," has done even better than their previous songs, going to #1 on the modern-rock charts, cracking the Hot 100, and putting them in the same breath as other rock-radio giants like Nickelback, Staind and Shinedown. And again, this seemed a bit odd — to everyone but the Pickups, that is.

"I think it's sort of ridiculous to put limits on your fans, and that mentality. Anyone who wants to listen to us can," Aubert said. "I remember when 'Lazy Eye' was on stations like that, I always felt like we were the really wacked-out kids at the prom, that would, like, spike the punch and stuff like that. Like, all of a sudden, we were at this party and a lot of the people were like, 'Dude, who are these guys?!?' but some of them were like, 'Hey, these guys!' It makes you stand out, for sure."

And from the sound of things, the follow-up single "Substitution" is only going to make them stick out more. Or, at least the video — helmed by sibling team the Malloys, who have done clips for N.E.R.D., the White Stripes and Kid Rock, to name just a few — should. By all accounts, it's shaping up to be a fairly odd project.

"It's cool. It's gonna be weird. We're playing the song in a surreal moose lodge, and then there's musical chairs going on with, like, eight Amazon-type gorgeous girls. Babes, I suppose," Aubert said. "They were actually playing musical chairs for, like, a real prize. ... It got pretty ugly. Everybody in the room watching it was like, 'This is the weirdest thing.' All the girls are color-coded. In one way, it's bright and sort of silly, but the way we're looking at it is sort of depressing. In fact, I have to admit: It's by far the darkest video we've ever done."

Stan Lee Reflects On 'Friendly' Relationship With Michael Jackson

Pair met 'a number of times' in the 1990s to discuss buying Marvel Comics.

SAN DIEGO — It's no secret that Michael Jackson was a comic book fan — just take a look at some of the items from his personal collection. But what many people don't realize is that the recently deceased pop icon was almost a comic book publisher too.

Last month, MTV's comic book movie blog Splash Page recalled how close Jackson came to buying Marvel Comics in the late 1990s alongside Stan Lee, the famous co-creator of Spider-Man, the X-Men, Fantastic Four and countless other superheroes.

During last weekend's Comic-Con, Lee said the relationship he developed with Jackson over the course of their business dealings extended well beyond professional courtesy. In fact, as various videos popping up around the Internet lately seem to attest, it wouldn't be out of line to call Jackson a fan of Lee and his creations.

"We had met a number of times," Lee told MTV News. "In fact, [Jackson] came to my house once with his son, and I remember my wife took care of his son for about an hour while Michael and I were talking.

"He was quite a good father," he added. "He was very solicitous, and he cared very much for the boy."

While their plan to buy Marvel never progressed past "the discussion phase," Lee said, the pair grew fairly close. At one point, Lee even made a trip to Jackson's home to discuss, of all things, Spider-Man.

"I had been to his place in Neverland," Lee said. "He wanted to do Spider-Man. I'm not sure whether he just wanted to produce it or wanted to play the role. ... Our conversation never got that far along.

"He thought I'd be the one who could get him the rights [to make a Spider-Man movie], and I told him I couldn't," Lee continued. "He would have to go to the Marvel company. But we did become friendly ... and he was a great guy."
