Blink-182 Prove They Haven't Lost A Step At Raucous Tour Kickoff In Vegas

The reunited band is goofy, loud and self-effacing, but certainly not nostalgic.

LAS VEGAS — "Motherf---, s---, f---." Those were Blink-182's first words to the fans on Thursday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, two songs into the first show on their massive summer reunion tour.

They were spoken by Mr. Thomas Delonge — who really has a flair for that type of thing — and, if anything, they served notice that though he and his Blink bandmates might have gotten older, spent nearly half a decade apart from one another, launched various side projects and clothing lines, starred in reality-TV programs, started families and become godfathers of a scene they never intended to create, they really haven't changed a bit.

And that was basically the theme of Thursday night's show, which despite a few extra bells and whistles (not to mention a rotating drum kit), was just a really great Blink show at its heart. Nostalgic it wasn't. Goofy, funny, loud, raucous, self-effacing and profane it most certainly was.

Opening with "Dumpweed," from 1999's breakthrough Enema of the State, then launching headlong into "Feeling This," from their final, self-titled disc, Blink showed no signs of rust or nerves — this was, after all, the kickoff of their first tour since 2004. Rather, it was like they had just emerged from a time capsule, perfectly preserved. Delonge still battered his guitar (and slurred the words like crazy), Mark Hoppus still struck at his bass (and pogoed a lot), and Travis Barker still bashed his kit (and didn't wear a shirt).

They played a copious amount of hits (after Delonge's opening salutation, "Rock Show" was followed by "What's My Age Again?," "First Date" and "Adam's Song"), and some lesser-known stuff ("Not Now," "Going Away to College," "Anthem Part Two"), all of which were eaten alive by the sweaty, throaty crowd. Oh, and the between-song banter? Well, let's just say they never lost a step in that department, either. It bears mention that nearly 90 percent of the stuff was unprintable, but some PG-13 gems on this night included Hoppus launching into a longwinded parody of Waylon Jennings' narration on "The Dukes of Hazzard" before stopping and proclaiming, "I'm 37, by the way ... fart!" and Delonge running through about 15 different scenarios in which the audience could have sex with various members of their family.

This is not to say that the whole show was one continuous pee-pee-and-poo-poo spiel. Blink also proved that with age comes the ability to flat-out play, and they showcased their chops on a variety of show-stopping numbers, including a long, jammy take on "I Miss You" and a moody version of "Stockholm Syndrome," which started ominous and somber, then mutated into a gnarly exercise in shredding.

Barker also got his chance to shine, in the form of an extended drum solo that saw him pound away to remixed versions of tracks like Jay-Z's "Dirt off Your Shoulder," while his drum kit whirled around in ever quickening 360s (sadly, we didn't get the full, "Barker and his kit soar over the audience" version on this night, since the Hard Rock was too small a venue). That, too, was greeted with thunderous applause and many camera phones held alight.

Barker's pyrotechnic display came right after Blink had finished their set. His bandmates then re-emerged from backstage to rip though a taut, retro-leaning encore: "Carousel," from their '94 Cheshire Cat debut, and — of course — "Dammit," from '97's Dude Ranch. It was the latter that the kids in the audience had been clamoring for, and when its speedy opening chords hit, the crowd went bananas, moshing as best they could, thrusting fists in the air and crowd-surfing with abandon.

Then, as the feedback was still washing over the stage, Delonge stepped back to the mic, searching for a perfect way to end the night. This is what he came up with:

"You guys are so f---ing cute! You're so godd--- sexual! I don't really know what to say. Masturbate!"

It was a nice bookend, really. Some things never change.

Swizz Beatz Talks New Records With Jay-Z And DMX

Plus: DJ Drama offers details on his new tape with Gucci Mane, in Mixtape Daily.

Behind The Beats: Swizz Beatz, Part 1

What's good, homies? For this section, we usually go hard in the studio with one of the top producers or DJs, but this is Swizzy — he always has a million things going down. And when the superproducer calls and gives you a couple of exclusives, why wait? Furthermore, Swizz is bigger than the studio. You can catch him in an art gallery, shooting a video in Dubai or even at Whitney Houston's album-listening session. Homes keeps himself active in all aspects of entertainment.

"I seen something on the cover of the XXL: 'The Death of the Super-Producer?' " Swizz said. "It was on the cover. I was like, 'I hope the f--- they not talking about me.' "

Swizz's career demise seems unfathomable. Besides Houston, he's working on that new DMX album, as well as some tracks for Jay-Z's Blueprint 3.

"I've been kicking since '98," Swizz said, "That's what I told Hova: 'We did it in '99, and we 'bout to do it in '09.' That's a blessing. I've been around.

"I'm starting to feel like a senior citizen," Swizz laughed. "I have people coming to me, saying, 'I started to listen to you when I was 9.' But I gotta remember: I started when I was, like, 16, 17. I'mma be 31 in September. Sh-- is crazy."

Swizz said he and Jay should finish up some of their new work together this weekend.

"I like the album," Swizz said of Blueprint 3. "He gotta say a lot. You know who to come through for the gutter [beats]. He just called me from London, spazzin'. Me and Jay, we're so much into the art of music, and we're great friends. This album, we happened to get into a little bit. That sh-- is super fun. We're still working."

Next Wave Of Flav

On DMX's hip-hop album: "By him not coming out on Summer Jam gave us the freedom to do everything we're doing right now [to make the album at our own pace]," Swizzy said. "I'm about to drop this joint that was supposed to be DMX and Jada, but it's gonna be DMX and Eve. I want people to hear Eve in that hard element again. X is on his A-game. They're in trouble. Just the lineup of music I have already done, ignorant! X is gonna come back so crazy. They are both on the way."

On DMX's gospel album: "I'mma let him do his thing later," Swizz said. "Now we gotta stay focused on what we gotta do. We gonna do the gospel later. But if we do the gospel album, it's gotta be with the official gospel people: Mary Mary, this one, that one. I want it to be something that even in the gospel realm is respected."

On the next Swizz Beatz album: "I paused up on my album sh--," he said. "I'm on a different level of expressing myself. I'd rather express musically than lyrically. But any minute, I can go in the studio and jump on some sh-- I made for somebody else and not wanna give it to them."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From the Underground

"Gucci Mane Starring as Mr. T"? What's up with that? That's what's advertised on the new Gucci and DJ Drama mixtape The Movie Part 2.

"That's Gucci Mane," Drama said. "I'm assuming it's a jewelry thing. I think Gucci is trying to go for the crown, as far as jewels. I told him he's the new Slick Rick."

The duo have been putting this tape together slowly since Gucc was released from prison several months ago.

"Drumma Boy did almost half the tape, if not more," Dram said. "Drumma has a great working relationship. Just like Drumma did most of the first tape. He's been working ever since he got out. We went through a bunch of ideas for the tape. We even toyed with the idea of it being a freestyle tape over instrumentals. But Gucci being Gucci, and the project being a 'movie,' he wanted to go in like the first one and it being almost an album-like project.

"One thing I like about this time, it being 'the movie' and it being a sequel, it's a lot of 'Also Starring.' The tape starts off with 'The Movie Intro,' " Dram said. "You have an awesome intro, then you have 'Pressure.' Real gutter beat. Willie Da Kid is on that beat. Gucci is also spitting. Then it goes into 'Burr.' I put 'Burr' at the top of the tape because people have been taking Gucci's slang. 'Burr' is his explanation of what 'burr' means. Then you have 'Beat It Up' with Trey Songz. 'Lay It Down' is another monster song with Nicki Minaj and Shawnna — the female side of things. I think them two are the [female] front-runners. The girls gonna love that. The tape is really The Movie. It's a bigger blockbuster. Bigger budget. On the tape, I say, 'It's the Transformers. Call me Optimus Dram.' "

Allison Iraheta Is Ready To Rock On Debut Album

LOS ANGELES — Allison Iraheta is hard at work prepping her debut album for Jive Records while she's on the road for the American Idols Live! tour, and she has a great idea for a new tune, based on a line she said to a confounded Simon Cowell during the show.

"I will write a song called 'It's Not Like I'm Cutting Myself,' " Iraheta joked. "I will."

At a recent tour stop in L.A., the singer told MTV News she's "just a little exhausted, pretty much going with the flow. I definitely don't want to stop, because otherwise I'll crash and pass out."

Iraheta — who placed fourth this past season — confirmed that she's working with Kevin "Let It Rock" Rudolf and David "Ex-Evanescence" Hodges on her album but put the kibosh on a rumor started by songwriter Ross Golan, who tweeted recently that Allison had met with Vitamin C in a songwriting session. "False!" Iraheta shouted. (I guess we won't hear any graduation-themed songs from Ms. Iraheta.)

As far as her genre goes, not many will be surprised that she's sticking to her musical roots. "Rock, definitely," Iraheta confirmed. "It's something I've always wanted to do. It's what I've grown up on."

Allison's standout "Idol" performance of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" (which she jokingly calls "the baby-makin' song") proved that the singer can tackle adult themes despite her young age. But she hopes to find a balance between her youthful exuberance and her mature voice. "I definitely don't want to be singing about, 'My boyfriend, yeah! He loves me!' It's definitely going to be [leaning] towards the reality of life, the crazy stuff that's happened to me in the past that people can relate to."

In the short term, she's focusing on the tour and making sure fans get their money's worth. "It's been a lot of fun," she said. "The fans are amazing. It's kinda crazy when we hit the venue, there's a line of people waiting outside. It's just crazy how committed they are!"

The level of commitment has gone so far that some Adam Lambert fans have tossed bras and thongs onstage while Allison and Adam perform their memorable duet of Foghat's "Slow Ride." Iraheta would prefer a more useful gift from fans. "I don't mind bills thrown at me," she quipped.

Only time will tell whether her following will "make it rain" when her debut album hits stores in the fall.

Blink-182 Fans Run Wild In Las Vegas Before Reunion-Tour Kickoff

'I begged and cried and bribed my mom to let me go,' one superfan says of her dedication to Blink.
By James Montgomery

Photo: MTV News

LAS VEGAS — For hours, they wandered the halls of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, most not old enough to even be near the blackjack tables, killing time, waiting for Mark, Tom and/or Travis to appear, for the reunion to get under way.

Around 3 p.m. local time, they began lining up outside the Joint, the hall where on Thursday night (July 23), Blink-182 will really, honestly, officially kick off their first tour in nearly five years. Doors didn't open for more than three hours, so they waited some more, sang Blink songs and compared smiley-face tattoos.

These are Blink-182 fans. They are dedicated, slightly crazy, and they weren't going to let anything stand in the way of being there for their favorite band to take the stage ... and, really, we mean anything.

"[My boyfriend's] car got impounded yesterday. ... He got pulled over for speeding, and he had a suspended license, so the cops impounded our car," said Lauren Davison, 18, who came from Utah to be here. "We had to pay $170 to get it out the impound, but it was worth it to be here."

"It's been five years since they toured, so, of course, I had to be here," her boyfriend, Sam Simpson, added. "That's probably why I was speeding. But getting impounded, the ticket, it was worth it."

That sentiment was echoed further up the line, by a rather energetic 20-year-old named William Emerson Catin, who bellowed Blink's name and thoroughly terrified the throngs of confused gamblers and tourists who passed him by. Seems he's risked financial ruin to be here.

"I've been waiting 17 years to see Blink-182. I think I'm gonna poop. ... I might cry a couple times. This is my first show. I finally get to see them," he enthused. "My sister had to drive me here from California, because I have a beat-down Volkswagen, and it would've blown up halfway here. I have no money. I blew all of it to get here. I almost went bankrupt."

But that's nothing compared to what 19-year-old Blink nut (Limited-edition Blink tour T-shirt? Check. Blink tattoo on neck? Check.) Thomas Strong endured to make it to Vegas.

"I drove all the way here from South Carolina. It took me three days. I slept in my car every day. I got pulled over, because a cop thought I had drugs in my car, and they searched me," Strong said. "And Blink are playing October 1 at Charlotte [North Carolina]. That's, like, 30 minutes away from my house. I could drive there, but this is the first show. I had to be here."

Impressive, indeed. But Strong didn't bribe anyone to get here; 12-year-old superfan Yasi did.

"I begged and cried and bribed my mom to let me go," Yasi said, while her mom looked on bemusedly. "I first heard Blink when I was 7, but really, I've been waiting my entire life for this. I was in my mom's stomach, and I was waiting for this to happen. I mean it."

Kelis Awarded Spousal, Child Support From Nas

Nas must pay Kelis — who just gave birth to the couple's child, Knight — $44,000 a month until September hearing.

Just hours after Kelis gave birth to her first child, a judge reportedly ordered her estranged husband, Nas, to pay her hefty sums in both spousal and child support.

According to The Associated Press, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled Thursday (July 23) that Nas must pay Kelis nearly $44,000 a month in support. The ruling is temporary until a follow-up hearing September 8, when it will be decided if the amount should be altered. In addition to the monthly support, Nas must also pay $45,000 to cover Kelis' attorney fees and for a forensic accountant.

Attorney for both parties were at odds over support for Kelis' prenatal care. In papers filed with the court, Kelis claims Nas "abandoned" her during her pregnancy. A lawyer for Nas, however, contends his client paid $30,000 in expenses toward the birth and maintained her health-insurance costs.

When contacted by MTV News, representatives for Kelis' lawyer's office declined to comment or confirm the information.

Kelis and Nas have been embattled in a bitter divorce dispute since word broke that the couple would be splitting in April.

In papers filed in court at the time, Kelis cited irreconcilable differences. The couple were married for four years, and in January, they announced they were expecting their first child together. Nas spoke excitedly to MTV News in April about welcoming his second child; he has a teenage daughter from a previous relationship. He even went as far as suggesting fans help the musical couple name their son.

"I've been thinking about kinda putting something online: 'Choose his name,' " he said. "You get a couple stacks for that. We take care of you for that. You win something real. But we're thinking now."

A couple of weeks later, Kelis announced the split, and the couple have had it out since through court papers, Twitter posts and now legal rulings.

Nas, for his part, seems to be in a celebratory mode. In a video posted online earlier this week, Nas revealed the name of his son, Knight Jones, and shouted out his newborn. He also urged his fans to be cautious about all the media attention about his divorce.

"My son is born today, so shout-out to my son, Knight," the rapper says in a clip, which is stamped with Tuesday's date. "My son's name is Knight. That's what I named the young God, Knight. Y'all heard it first. Don't believe nothing you hear in the media. I love y'all. Don't listen to that bullsh--. I love y'all. That's why I'm here."

Taylor Swift Says Working With Jack White Would Be 'Really Awesome'

Taylor Swift may still be rocking the charts with Fearless, but that doesn't mean that the 19-year-old isn't thinking of what her next album is going to sound like. Swift is already in the planning stages for her follow-up, and she promises this one has a lot of personal inspiration to draw on.

"As soon as I put out my last album, Fearless, the next day I was writing for the next album. So I'm always thinking ahead," she told MTV News. "I love organizing and planning and getting a theme going for the next record."

Swift has a lot of topics she could cover — being a pop star, touring, fame, reading about herself in the gossip pages — but she's not divulging what exactly she'll be touching on in the next LP. "I'm very happy to have that theme, and a lot has happened in the last year that's been very inspiring," she said, adding, "It's a secret."

But if you think that the album will be available at your local record store anytime soon, you're mistaken — Swift, who is currently touring and will be performing at the VMAs in September, is taking her time and making sure she does it right.

"You know, what I love doing is taking a long time to put an album together, because you have these ideas that hit you in the middle of the night and you never know what you can write two weeks before you're supposed to," she explained. "So I like to take a lot of time and really develop an album and take a year and a half ... two years to make an album so that it's not thrown together."

Who would Taylor love to collaborate with on this next album? "Jack White ... 'cause he's awesome," she said about the possibility of working with the White Stripes mastermind. Working with Swift wouldn't be White's first foray into country; the singer/songwriter produced and performed on Loretta Lynn's 2004 album Van Lear Rose. "I love his style," Swift continued. "I love his writing and I think he's an amazing player too, so any kind of collaboration there would be really awesome."

But he's not aiming for a raunchy music career: 'My style is more reserved, refined,' he tells MTV News.

LOS ANGELES — Watch your back, Spectacular. "American Idol" finalist Anoop Desai has perfected the bump-and-grind, and he's not afraid to show it off.

"You gotta put your chest out first, and then roll," Anoop demonstrated to MTV News at the recent American Idols Live! tour stop in L.A. "It's funny, because I actually think of this stuff," he laughed.

Anoop is putting those skills — as well as his vocal chops — to good use during his three-song set on the tour, which runs the gamut from Elvis Presley's version of "Always on My Mind" to a raunchy (for "Idol") "My Prerogative" that would make Bobby Brown proud.

Although he's got the R. Kelly stage antics down (and the ladies are noticing — see what some Idols Live! concertgoers had to say), Anoop wants his fans to know that there won't be any (alleged) sex tapes anytime soon. "I'm not peeing on anyone," Desai joked.

Throughout his "Idol" journey, 'Noop Dogg indicated that he wanted to pursue an R&B career once the show wrapped up. And he's thrilled that he gets the chance to flex his R&B muscles without the constraints of the "Idol" theme weeks. "If you wanna check out what we're doing after 'Idol,' then come on out to the tour," Anoop said.

But don't let the suggestive dance moves fool you: It's unlikely you'll find him looking to join Pretty Ricky anytime soon.

"My style is more reserved, refined. I really like Chrisette Michele right now, I love Ne-Yo, as I've said a lot. But that's more the style I wanna go to. More the neo-soul vibe, but definitely pop music," Anoop said.

Michael Jackson's Sister Rebbie May Take Care Of Kids

Eldest Jackson, also a professional singer, has three grown children.

With the ultimate decision involving custody of Michael Jackson's three young children still very much up in the air, speculation turned to the possibility that MJ's sister Janet would raise Prince, Paris and Blanket. But Janet might not actually be the aunt who eventually rears the kids. Rather, Michael's 59-year-old sister, Rebbie, might play that role, according to a report from TMZ.

The Web site said that even if Jackson's mother, Katherine, assumes custody of the children, it will be Rebbie who cares for the children on a day-to-day basis. In fact, Rebbie is said to be living with Katherine and the kids at the family's home in Encino, California.

So who is Rebbie Jackson? In the weeks since Michael's death, his older sister has maintained perhaps the lowest profile of any of the Jackson family. But, like all of her siblings, Rebbie was for a time a professional singer.

Born in Gary, Indiana, in 1950, Rebbie — whose first name is actually Maureen — is the oldest of the nine Jackson siblings. While her brothers began performing as the Jackson 5 in the 1960s, Rebbie didn't get a chance at a professional singing career until 1976. When the family group left Motown, she began to contribute background vocals to acts like the Emotions and Betty Wright.

Rebbie finally got her shot at a solo debut in 1984 with the LP Centipede, which featured covers of songs by Prince ("I Feel for You") and the Miracles ("A Fork in the Road"). Following the astonishing success of Thriller, Michael produced Rebbie's biggest hit off the album, a single also called "Centipede," which rose to the #4 spot on the Billboard R&B chart and eventually went gold.

Two years later, Rebbie's follow-up, Reaction — which highlighted collaborations with Isaac Hayes and Cheap Trick's Robin Zander — didn't fare as well commercially. The title single, though, managed to crack a few Billboard charts. Her third album, R U Tuff Enuff, also struggled, managing to eke out one Billboard R&B top 10 single.

Rebbie ended up taking a decade-long break between studio albums, returning in the late '90s with an album released off Michael's own record label called Yours Faithfully, which contained a remixed version of "Centipede." It would prove to be the eldest Jackson's final album to date.

While Rebbie pursued a career as a recording artist, she also raised a family of her own. After marrying her childhood friend and fellow Jehovah's Witness, Nathaniel Brown, in the late '60s, she and her husband had two daughters and one son, at one point moving the family to Virginia. All of their children are now grown, and Rebbie now is back in California.

Jane's Addiction have been forced to cancel their upcoming Australian tour due to the hospitalization of drummer Stephen Perkins. According to a press release from the group's spokesperson, Perkins, 41, has been admitted to the Infectious Disease Ward at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles for treatment of an infection in his elbow.

"Doctors expect to keep him there for the next few days for further diagnosis and observation while anti-biotic treatment continues," the statement read, noting that a full recovery is expected over the next few weeks.

The news comes on the heels of the announcement earlier this week that Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys will be undergoing treatment for cancer of the salivary gland in his throat. That treatment knocks the Beasties out of four major summer-festival dates, including Lollapalooza (August 7-9), where the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will take their place. Jane's Addiction, whose singer Perry Farrell is one of the co-founders of Lolla, are also slated to headline one of the nights of the upcoming festival on the Chicago waterfront, and a spokesperson for the group said Perkins' hospitalization is not expected to impact the group's Lollapalooza performance in any way.

The Australian tour by the indie-rock godfathers — who reunited with their full original lineup last year and are in the midst of their first world tour together in more than 17 years — was due to kick off Saturday. "I know how excited we were to come play in Australia, and how long the fans there have waited for this," Farrell said in the statement. "I want everyone Down Under to know that we will come back as soon as we can."

The band had recently returned to Los Angeles after a European leg of the tour when an unidentified infection was discovered after Perkins noticed severe swelling and pain in his elbow.
