Voice Of The People: 50 Cent Responds To You

Could it ever really happen? In May, we brought you news that years ago, there had been loose discussion that Eminem and 50 Cent would make an entire album together. DJ Whoo Kid had a good laugh, telling us some of the names that were thrown around in jest for the dream project, like Ebony and Ivory. You guys wrote in and, for the most part, were in full support of the joint effort.

"Oh yes ... they should totally do an album together," a fan named Tuff_Brunette wrote. They would be soooo perfect. They would complement each other so nicely. I am really hoping this happens! Since I wasn't too fond of Em's album anyways, which was massively disappointing, I'll give him another shot if he gets with 50. ... Heck yes."

"I would love an album of Dre and Eminem together!" Fobgirl posted.

Jasent76 co-signed on the dream album: "Holy sh--! I would love to have a full album of Em & 50 together! How badass is that!?"

Very badass, Jasent. While we still haven't heard word from Mr. Mathers, 50 Cent told us last week that he'd be down to do an album with his homie Eminem. "I'd love to," 50 said about a LP with Slim Shady.

Fif even devised a couple of scenarios to make it work.

"We haven't [seriously] discussed making an album together, 'cause we would have to sit collectively and create each song," he said. "Unless we was doing something where half of it was his and half of it was mine. And conceptually, maybe if he came up with the first six songs and I built the last six songs and we just featured on each other's records, you know what I mean? We'd do that in a heartbeat."

Maybe we'll get heavy doses of Em and Fif together on Dr. Dre's Detox LP ...

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From the Underground

Raekwon the Chef is out promoting Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II, but there are a couple of other LPs he's looking toward in the future. There's a Rae, Method Man and Ghostface Killah album being talked about, as well as that full Wu-Tang Clan LP called Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang. If you remember, Rae first spoke of that album to Miss Info a few years ago during the promotion of the ill fated 8 Diagrams LP. Rae hinted that Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang would be some type of payback toward the RZA.

Rae explained that there is currently no unrest within the Wu, so Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang will instead pay homage to the Clan's beginning.

"Before I was a member of Wu, I was an MC on the street that just loved hip-hop," the Chef said. "When you think of Shaolin [Staten Island], you think of the home of the brave. Before anything and everything, this is where you was from. You inherited your style as a kid coming up. Shaolin is still considered the streets to us. So it's like me challenging my old way of life. This album was designed to let the master know your students are now masters too. We wanted to take it back to challenging the master on a couple of techniques we feel we got from the street side of things.

"We always said Wu-Tang members are a group but still able to hold their own," he added. "When you're able to hold your own, you're still considered that dude from Shaolin that's nice. It's just an alter-ego thing challenging the sharpest sword we ever had with our old tactics that allowed us to get that far as a Clan. [It'll] be alter egos challenging each other, really allowing RZA to fall back on the production and allowing us to give him a flashback memory to the things we know we need from the abbot [RZA]. We want him to be involved [with the album as an MC], but the concept was for him not to be involved production-wise."

Rae compared Wu to a martial-arts film.

"It's like when you look at your illest karate flick," he said. "Sometimes the abbot be whooping on you so much, he's teaching you to get iller. Next thing you know, you whoop on the abbot. Now he already know: 'I gotta give you the crown now.' It's all love, and it's movies. Our life is a karate flick. If you look at a karate flick, it's the same kinda format in our life."

NEW YORK — Swizz Beatz has a thing for millions. He produced and is featured on Maino's "Million Bucks," and now the superproducer has given Whitney Houston a beat for the song "Million Dollar Bill."

Swizz and the song's writer, Alicia Keys, were in the Allen Room in Manhattan's Lincoln Center on Tuesday night (July 21) at a listening event for Houston's first studio LP in six years, I Look to You, along with L.A. Reid, Martha Stewart, Diane Sawyer and others.

Clive Davis presented the album and told a story of how Keys asked him personally to write for the album.

Right from the start, "Million Dollar Bill" displays Houston's billion-dollar voice over a club-friendly Swizz track that blends a rough-riding thump with R&B. Keys got up and danced while taking video with her personal camera as the words she wrote boomed through the speakers.

Houston sings of looking for love and finding a man with potential. "If he makes you feel like a million-dollar bill, say, 'Oh, oh/ Oh, oh,' " she sings on the hook. "It's been a long time since love has come my way. I've been looking and searching for a man to touch this place."

Later, Whitney commands people to dance if they're experiencing good love right now.

"Throw one hand in the air/ Left, right, up, down/ Got you spinning all around, say, 'Oh, oh/ Oh, oh.' "

The audience gave the record a rousing round of applause when it was done.

"Million Dollar Bill" was the first of nine songs Davis played from the album, one of which is a cover of Leon Russell's "A Song for You." The beat was remixed with a dance/club vibe, inspiring the people in the audience to stand up and dance and clap. Houston walked out, dancing and clapping as the record played.

R. Kelly wrote and produced a record called "Salute." The Pied Piper also wrote the title track, which is produced by Tricky Stewart and Harvey Mason Jr.

The power ballad "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" was written by Diane Warren and produced by David Foster.

Does Shakira Have A Crush On 'Twilight' Star Robert Pattinson?

'I've heard he's a great singer and a great musician,' she says of Robert Pattinson

Do you want to see Shakira blush? Ask her about "Twilight." Why would the vampire-and-werewolf film franchise get the superstar singer feeling a bit embarrassed? Is it because the title of her upcoming October album, She Wolf, shares a fondness for hirsute shape-shifters? Nope. Turns out Shakira has a little crush on "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson.

"I love 'Twilight,' " she told MTV News' Tim Kash recently. "I can't say what I love about "Twilight.' "

"Does the first name begin with Robert and the second name end with Pattinson?" Kash wondered aloud.

"No, no, no," said the Colombian-born singer, bursting into laughter. "I'm too old. I can't say those things."

Fighting off a case of the giggles, she added, "I mean, how old is he — 23? 24? ... You are getting me in trouble!"

For the record, RPattz doesn't turn 24 until next May. And the 32-year-old Shakira didn't fall for the man behind Edward Cullen until after she'd written and recorded the first single off the new album, also called "She Wolf." "And then the president of my label said, 'Have you checked out "Twilight"? It's about wolves and vampires and things,' " she said. "And I'm like, 'Ah, that's up my alley. I mean, where is it?' And I watched it and loved it."

But Shakira is a fan of all the big new fantasy movies and, if she had to pick, she'd side with Team Harry Potter over Team Edward. "I mean, 'Harry Potter' has been there for how many years?" she decided. "Pattinson just arrived."

That doesn't mean she wouldn't be interested in a little musical collaboration with RPattz, who plays guitar and piano and recorded vocals for two songs on the "Twilight" soundtrack.

"I've heard he's a great singer and a great musician," she said. "If those rumors are true — yeah, of course, why not?"

Chris Brown Fans React To Apology With Pride, Skepticism

On Monday, Chris Brown released a video online apologizing for his assault on Rihanna, for which he received five years of probation in a plea deal last month.

"What I did was inexcusable," Brown said in the clip, explaining that his lawyers had kept him from speaking publicly about the incident, though he has repeatedly apologized to Rihanna and has expressed remorse for his actions. "I am very sad and very ashamed at what I have done. My mother and my spiritual teachers have taught me better than that."

After seeing the video, some of Brown's fans applauded him for his honesty and candor.

"I am so proud of Chris right now! That had to be one of the hardest things he has or will ever do, to face your critics and seek forgiveness," Tracie commented on MTVNews.com.

"It shows so much courage and humility," Ben added.

"He ain't perfect," KonyakZero wrote. "Give the kid a break. Now, if he does it again, that's a different story. Second chance, people."

Though some accused Brown of reading from cue cards in the clip, they acknowledged the humility that was on display. "This young man is only 20 years old," Kimmyanita commented. "This is a lesson he has to learn from. People are so harsh on people when they make a mistake, remember he is human."

But there were just as many who felt Brown's statement was tardy and insincere. "I'm glad he apologized, but in my opinion, public apologies mean nothing. He says he will never do it again. Well, I guess we'll have to see what happens behind closed doors," Diva4real5291 wrote. "But I'm happy he said something."

Others were more cynical. "Day late and dollar short. Do I smell a first single coming from a new album?" Maxie wondered.

"I'm not feeling it," Keekee said. "His career is tanking, so it's time to fix it before it's too late."

"This apology is coming after he tried to plead not guilty," unome_djd wrote. "I'm sure that he has given [Rihanna] a sincere apology and I commend that, but this two-minute apology isn't getting it for me."

Few weighed in on how this would affect their opinion of Brown's music, though it was the last straw for sonrisas_101, who wrote, "Blah blah blah. He's still wrong for what he did, and like Oprah said, HE WILL DO IT AGAIN. Never again will I support him by listening to or purchasing his music."

Brown is currently working on his mandated community service and attending classes about domestic abuse. He has been working on a new album called Graffiti, which is expected to come out later this year.

Kris Allen Says 'No Boundaries' Just 'Didn't Work' In 'Idol' Set

'Adding the Killers song was a, you know, boost in the energy,' the 'American Idol' winner says of his song swap.

LOS ANGELES — Turns out there is a boundary for "American Idol" winner Kris Allen after all.

Less than two months after releasing victory single "No Boundaries," (and defending it at the "Idol" finale), Kris Allen has already dropped the song from his American Idols Live! tour set list and replaced it with the Killers' "All These Things That I've Done."

But the amiable acoustic rocker insists the switch has nothing to do with his feelings on the song — which remain positive — but rather chalks it up to musical flow.

During the Los Angeles tour stop on Thursday, Allen told MTV News, "We were talking to the tour director and stuff, and it kinda just didn't work with the set."

Early tour reports from critics and fans pointed to the Kara DioGuardi-penned "No Boundaries" as "sticking out" on Allen's five-song set list, which also included his well-received covers of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine," Kanye West's "Heartless" and the Beatles classic "Hey Jude."

Allen first replaced "No Boundaries" with the Killers anthem at the Sacramento, California, tour stop and immediately noticed a big difference in audience reaction. "Obviously, adding the Killers song was a, you know, boost in the energy," Allen said.

Kris Allen fans outside the Staples Center were elated with Allen's performance Thursday night, particularly because there were no boundaries, mountains or hurricanes mentioned anywhere onstage. One Allen fan, Tatiana, gushed, "Thankfully, there wasn't any 'Boundaries'!" Another fan, Barbara, emphatically echoed, "It's better he didn't do it. He was great!"

The sentimental (and often schmaltzy) coronation song has long been a bone of contention for "Idol" die-hards. Last year's single, "Time of My Life," was renamed "Magic Rainbow" by David Cook fans thanks to one specific lyric. And two years later, Jordin Sparks' "This Is My Now" is still a go-to punch line for "Idol" bloggers like Entertainment Weekly's Michael Slezak. Allen dropping "No Boundaries" is the first instance, however, of an "Idol" winner distancing him- or herself from the single during the tour.

In addition to the American Idols Live! shows, Allen is hard at work on his major-label debut. (In June, Kris confirmed to MTV News that he's in the process of co-writing a song with the Fray's Joe King.) There's no word yet on whether this set-list switcheroo indicates that "No Boundaries" will be noticeably absent from his album when it hits stores in the fall.

Alice In Chains Reunite, Ready <i>Black Gives Way To Blue</i>

'We just slowly took little steps until it felt right,' drummer Sean Kinney says of the band's journey after Layne Staley's death.

They came of age alongside such contemporaries as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Now, seven years after the death of troubled frontman Layne Staley, multiplatinum rock group Alice in Chains are returning to the spotlight with a new singer, a new album and a forthcoming world tour. And while fans have cautiously watched the new venture take shape, the guys are confident they can recapture the magic that made Alice in Chains one of the most influential acts of the 1990s.

"We've seen the crossed arms for the first couple of songs," relates vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell of their recent shows. "[But] then, by the end, people are having fun. They've let go of whatever personal reservations they may've had, and they're seeing why we're doing this."

The decision to re-form Alice in Chains with Comes With the Fall singer William DuVall taking co-vocalist duties with Cantrell was a difficult one for the group, which also includes original members Sean Kinney and Mike Inez. The trio had frantically tried to save Staley from a devastating drug addiction, and his passing left the band shaken beyond repair.

"When Layne [died], I doubt we even thought about doing this," Kinney said. "We never thought about getting a new singer. It wasn't an option and it wasn't how we went about this. We just slowly took little steps until it felt right."

"We hadn't committed to do anything after that initial charity show that we did [in 2005]," Cantrell explained. "Playing that show with a group of friends, including William, seemed to cough up a real f---ing sh--ball of f---ing grief. It was something that we had been walking around with, and something that we chose not to discuss in public. It was a private matter for us. So it's something we couldn't take lightly and we knew we didn't have to do. It just continued to feel right enough to continue trying, and it continues to feel right to move forward."

Like other bands that have reformed over the years with missing members, questions over the legitimacy of using the Alice in Chains name have been floated in some circles. But for Cantrell, there was no other option.

"The band's changed. I get that," Cantrell said. "But some of the [questions] are kind of annoying, like, 'How could you call yourself Alice in Chains?' Well, because it's our f---ing band. And we decided as a group that we can live up to that name, and we will, and it's our choice. But it's cool that it strikes such a chord and that it's so personal to everybody, and we dig that."

The evolution of Alice in Chains is evident in the new album, Black Gives Way to Blue, slated for a September 29 release. The LP comes from a matured sensibility, and Cantrell promises its themes will fill in the band's missing pieces. There's also more to the lyrics than drug use and depression, he asserts.

"It's easy just to f---ing put a blanket thing on those two particular subjects because that sh-- was there and we did write songs about that. But there are songs about our relationships with each other, there are songs about my brother, there are songs I wrote for my dog, there are songs Layne wrote for his girlfriend. We didn't just write about f---ing drugs," Cantrell laughed. "It's there, but it's an easy catchphrase and I find that that's kind of a drag sometimes living inside of that.

"It was a dark factor to all of that," he continued, "but I think that came from just dealing with things through a gut level and in a truthful way. But there are a lot of other subjects that we wrote about, and on this record there are a lot of subjects we brought to it. There's a lot to address, and from the time we stopped to where we are now, that's all on the record."

In the end, it's a contemplative experience for Cantrell, as he and his bandmates prepare to begin the next chapter in the storied history of Alice in Chains.

"There's a bigger message for us personally," he said, "which is, 'Sh-- happens to everybody, and life is not always good, and you take your f---ing lumps.' We've done it together, so regardless of how well this record does financially, we're really proud of the music that we created and we're really looking forward to the future. More than all of that, I'm totally f---ing proud of all of us for manning the f--- up and continuing to live."

Lil Wayne's <i>Rebirth</i> Delayed Yet Again

Will Weezy's new LP be worth the wait? Our hip-hop experts deliberate, in Off the Dome.
By Shaheem Reid

Lil Wayne's Rebirth isn't coming out next month after all. Weezy just announced that the album has been delayed again. He's still working on it. While there is some speculation that it will come out in September, sources in Weezy's camp tell us that there is no confirmed release date at this time but that there have been no problems in the album's recording process. The holdup is simply that Wayne's schedule is extremely hectic, and he's been busy gearing up for the America's Most Wanted Music Festival. Still, Weezy is on the projected list of Cash Money and Young Money albums slated to drop this year, along with LPs by Drake, Birdman, G. Malone, 2 Pistols and Weezy's Young Money crew.

Well, how about we stop stressing Wayne and let art happen when it happens? Did we already forget that Tha Carter III got pushed back damn near a whole year before it came out? That record did OK, didn't it?

While a September launch is not sounding like the likeliest of scenarios, throwing Wayne into the mix of albums coming out that month would give an added twist to an already heavy few weeks of planned releases.

Today, myself and Rahman Dukes sat down and talked about some of the possibilities. Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Gucci Mane, Fat Joe, Raekwon the Chef and some others have already announced September arrivals for their LPs. Wouldn't it be crazy to have Wayne and Jay-Z box in a first-week showdown? Or a Wayne/ 50 first-week showdown? We'll see how everything pans out. Click the video to hear more of what we had to say.

After five long diva-less years, there's a new crop of pop stars set to claim, not to mention redefine, the title. Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, Adele and Leona Lewis are slated to perform at this year's VH1 Divas concert. The show, the first since 2004, will take place live on VH1 on September 17.

Cyrus, Adele, Lewis and Clarkson join a long list of esteemed singers who have graced the Divas stage, including Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Cher, Diana Ross and Beyoncé, to name a few. And although those ladies may seem more experienced in diva-dom, the show's producer, Lee Rolontz, assured fans in a statement that these girls are up to the task. "Adele, Kelly, Leona and Miley have all captured the world's attention with their talent and have earned their designation as VH1 Divas this year. Don't let some of their young ages fool you — these women are among the best entertainers in the world and will continue to thrill music fans for a long time to come."

According to the press release, more presenters and performers are expected to be announced in the weeks leading up to the show. As in years past, the show will also benefit the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.

The VH1 Divas series premiered in 1998 with Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin and Celine Dion. Subsequent shows included everyone from Donna Summer to Nelly Furtado to Mary J. Blige. The last concert took place in 2004 and featured Patti LaBelle, Jessica Simpson, Debbie Harry and Eve.

Tony Yayo Calls Cormega Back To The Streets

Yayo talks about recruiting a fellow Queens MC, in Mixtape Daily.

Two generations of Queens MCs: Tony Yayo and Cormega. In the '90s and early on in this decade, Mega was getting on majors like Def Jam and Interscope (the Firm's The Album), but he made his niche working independently. He released a string of well-received indie LPs, and now he's working on a new joint for later this year. Everyone from Pete Rock to DJ Premier to Buckwild has done beats for him.

Meanwhile, Tony Yayo is continuing to rep his team's flag on the streets with another mixtape. Mega and Yayo say their allegiance is legit, and a collaboration called "Streets Keep Calling Me" is just the start. Look for the exclusive video real soon right here on Mixtape Daily.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Mixtape: Public Enemy

Starring: Tony Yayo

Collaboration: "Streets Keep Calling Me" with Cormega

Essential Info: "Sometimes I feel like a public enemy," Yayo said. "Everybody is against me."

For the Queens native, the title was a no-brainer. He had just seen the Johnny Depp film "Public Enemies" when someone gave him a crime encyclopedia. So Yayo has learned a lot about John Dillinger lately.

Somebody who Tony didn't need to research for his mixtape was former Firm member Cormega.

"I had to bring the general out. Mega Montana. I know a lot of people he knows," Yayo said, explaining how the collaboration originated. "Real recognize real. I feel this dude. His music is c'mon. When you look at an artist like Nas, you put Cormega on that same plateau, to me, in my eyes. The Firm. Everything he did in hip-hop. I love hip-hop. I remember 'Dead Man Walking.' That's one of my favorite joints."

"I was telling Yayo, when he was in jail the Yayo buzz was one of the biggest buzzes I've witnessed in hip-hop, period," Cormega said. "I remember 50 before all that. I remember 50 Cent in my man Junior's crib... always smiling, always talking. When he got on, he blew up bigger than I even thought."

Yayo's mixtape will be available for download on ThisIs50.com Tuesday night (July 21).
