Fire Starter: Slim Da Mobster

We all know Dr. Dre has an ear for beats, but the West Coast superproducer also has a keen sense of recognizing upcoming lyrical talent.

Dre's The Chronic launched Snoop Dogg's career, and his second solo album, 2001, helped solidify Eminem as a serious talent to pay attention to in the game. With his third opus on the way, the good doctor has tapped South Central rookie Slim Da Mobster to contribute to Detox, alongside heavyweights like Lil Wayne and T.I.

"I'm not even focused on my album right now," Slim told us in Los Angeles. "I'm all about his album. 'Cause the better I do on that, the better it is for the situation with my album."

Da Mobster might be new on the scene, but the Los Angeles rhyme-spitter impressed Eminem so much that he pushed to have him ink a deal.

After getting the co-signs from the big homies Dre and Em, 50 Cent was the next to jump onboard behind the young rapper. Now, Slim Da Mobster is the first artist signed to all three artists, representing G-Unit/Shady/Aftermath.

To add to the repertoire, Slim is managed by industry veteran John Monopoly, who helped usher Kanye West from producer to breakthrough artist.

Danny Gokey Wants His And Adam Lambert's Fans To Get Along

'They tend to bash each other,' the 'American Idol' finalist tells MTV News.

LOS ANGELES — One's a makeup-wearing, "Twilight"-loving gay man, and the other's a devoutly religious worship leader from a small town in Wisconsin. Nope, it's not the pitch for a new sitcom, but rather the reality of "American Idol" finalists Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey, currently on the road for the American Idols Live! tour.

With such a disparity between the two performers, it's not surprising that the singers' fanbases have as much in common with each other as Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat. Sadly, instead of singing and dancing about their differences, the rival fans are screaming at each other on the Internet. And Danny Gokey thinks it's gone too far.

"It's not cool. They tend to bash each other," Gokey told MTV News at the recent "Idol" tour stop in L.A.

In fact, Gokey cites the unfortunate fan friction as the main reason stories began surfacing about a supposed Adam/Danny feud.

"There's a lot of made-up stories about how me and Adam are behind the scenes, like, punching each other and fighting. And me and Adam are like, 'Uh, hi, guys! We're buddies! We're cool!' " Gokey insisted.

Gokey and Lambert even took to Twitter, telling their fans to take a chill pill. Gokey said their fans' response was frustrating. "They [didn't] believe it! 'That's a false Adam, that's a false Danny! It's not them.' "

The reluctant Danny and Adam fans finally came around when Lambert's Twitter account was hacked (in an unrelated incident) and saw that Adam chose Danny's account to spread the news. The two singers also began appearing in several video BubbleTweets together.

"Since the BubbleTweets, things are calming down," Gokey said. "I've seen on my Twitter account some people are saying, 'Oh! You and Adam are cool. OK, we're fine with that!' "

Ne-Yo Won't Write A 'Chris Brown Bash Song' For Rihanna

'I'm not gonna turn my back on a person I call my friend because he made a mistake,' singer/songwriter tells MTV News.

Now that Chris Brown has apologized for the altercation that took place earlier this year between him and Rihanna, will the "Umbrella" singer be next to speak up?

Well, according to Ne-Yo, it's more likely to happen in an interview than a song. The singer/songwriter said Rihanna won't be addressing the matter on any material he writes for her next album.

"I've done some stuff for Rihanna's [project]," he told MTV News. "I didn't really want to go there too much, because I know that's what everybody is expecting. I don't think there isn't a person alive that doesn't know what happened and what it was. I don't feel like it needs to be glorified. I don't think that needs to be a song that's sung or written. It's sad that it took that happening to get the attention it deserves. Women get beat up all the time, and nobody says anything about it or chooses to do anything about it. But now that it happened to a celebrity, [it's], 'Let's talk about it on Oprah Winfrey.' "

In the past, Ne-Yo has worked with Britney Spears, and during the tumultuous time following her divorce form Kevin Federline, he told MTV News the "Toxic" superstar would touch on her personal life on the record.

This time, however, Ne-Yo said he isn't able to go there with Rihanna, nor does he want to, because of his friendship with Brown.

"Chris Brown is a friend of mine, and I don't view him as a bad guy for what happened," Ne-Yo explained. "It was an absolute mistake, and he has some lessons to learn and some maturing to do. But I'm not gonna bash him for that. I'm not gonna turn my back on a person I call my friend because he made a mistake. [So] I can't write the Chris Brown bash song and then turn around and look myself in the mirror."

What Will Katie Holmes Do For 'So You Think You Can Dance'?

Among the many reasons "So You Think You Can Dance" can count both dancers and couch potatoes among its fans is the way the competition clearly shows its contestants grow from unknown, struggling artists into full-blown stars. But what will happen when the show takes a page from that other network dance competition and puts an A-list actress on the stage? We'll find out Thursday night (July 23), when Katie Holmes performs a song-and-dance tribute to Judy Garland.

Holmes is performing the number, choreographed by her friend and frequent "SYTYCD" guest Tyce Diorio, to promote the Dizzy Feet Foundation, a charity co-founded by the show's executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, director/choreographer Adam Shankman and "Dancing With the Stars" judge Carrie Ann Inaba. The organization aims to give dance scholarships to underserved children and create an accreditation program for dance schools.

"I can't say anything about it — all I know is that Katie Holmes is an incredibly talented dancer, singer, entertainer, much more so than other people have gotten to experience," Shankman told MTV News. "And she, having come onto the board of Dizzy Feet Foundation, really helped kick up the profile. And she is really into it; she talks about wanting a place where [daughter Suri Cruise] can go to school."

Kherington Payne, one of season four's top 10 dancers, gave us a hint of what Holmes' performance will look like, based on her own experience with Diorio. "You can expect a fun, spicy Broadway number, that's for sure!" said the dancer. "I've never seen her dance or sing before, so I think it's going to be exciting. ... She's going to have an adrenaline rush like no other!"

Payne, who is making her own transition from dancing to acting as she co-stars in the new "Fame" remake, is happy to see celebrities like Holmes and this week's guest judge Ellen DeGeneres appear on "SYTYCD." "This show has done a lot for the dance community and for dancers. People are realizing that, and celebrities and non-celebrities want to support it."

In addition to his frequent guest-judge appearances on the show, Shankman has also done his part to support the dance community by producing the "Step Up" movies and helming "Hairspray" (which, he pointed out, was once Suri Cruise's favorite movie). And he's certainly noticed the impact dance TV shows and movies have had on would-be b-boys and ballerinas.

"I think that the TV shows and their outrageous popularity ... have really penetrated the households, and everybody can see how hard the kids work, how real the struggle is, how real it is and how beautiful it can be," Shankman said. "And how exciting and also how aggressive and male and athletic it can feel, so it doesn't have this sort of out-there feeling anymore. ... It's just in people's lives."

Nas Announces Birth Of Son With Kelis In Online Video

Nas and his estranged wife, Kelis, have welcomed a baby boy named Knight to the hip-hop world, according to the Queens rapper.

In a video recorded by Video Music Box and posted online, Nas revealed the name of his newborn.

"My son is born today, so shout-out to my son, Knight," the rapper says in a clip, which is stamped with Tuesday's date.

Kelis went into labor on Tuesday, but a representative for the singer had not confirmed details of her delivery as of press time.

The couple publicly announced the pregnancy in January after being married for four years. The pair appeared to be in good spirits months after the announcement as they solicited names for their child from MTVNews.com readers. However, just two weeks after the solicitations, Kelis unexpectedly filed for divorce from her husband.

The splitting process has been bitter, with the two arguing over finances in court filings. At one point Kelis took to Twitter to admonish Nas after the rapper posted a salacious picture of himself with a group of women on the site using singer Maxwell's account. Reports also surfaced on Tuesday that Kelis barred Nas from the delivery room while she was in labor.

While the once happily married couple continue to be at odds, Nas appears to be in a celebratory mood over the birth of his second child in the online video. (He also has a daughter from a previous relationship.) In the same video clip, taken at a neighborhood party at the rapper's native Queensbridge Housing Projects, Nas takes the stage to perform. He again shouts-out his son and also urges his fans to be cautious when watching news reports about his divorce proceedings.

"My son's name is Knight. That's what I named the young God, Knight," Nas tells fans. "Y'all heard it first. Don't believe nothing you hear in the media. I love y'all. Don't listen to that bullsh--. I love y'all, that's why I'm here."

Swizz Beatz 'So Excited' To Work With Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys

'I was super happy,' Beatz says of the reaction his 'Million Dollar Bill' got at Houston's recent listening party.

NEW YORKSwizz Beatz's music is about to hit hard again with tracks on upcoming albums by Jay-Z, DMX, Eve and, of course, Whitney Houston. Swizz was at Lincoln Center on Tuesday (July 21) as one of the attendees at the listening party for Houston's upcoming I Look to You. Swizz and Alicia Keys crafted a track for the project called "Million Dollar Bill," which is just screaming to be a first single.

Swizz started the process on the song four months ago when he got a call from Clive Davis and record executive Larry Jackson. They told Swizzy, "We're working with Whitney. Let's see what you have. We know you have something under your sleeve."

"I went to the office and vibed with Larry," Swizz explained. "I was like, 'She really sounds good. She's on her A-game.'

"At the time I was working on some stuff with Alicia," Swizz added. "I was like, 'We need to bring Whitney back. We need to do some stuff to support Whitney.' Then Alicia was like, 'I love Whitney, she's an icon. I would love to be a part of that.' I started vibing on different things. I didn't want to come with anything that would make her sound too old or too young. That's when I got the vibe to do something that had, like, a disco feel, but still with the hard drums on it — still musical but moving. I wanted to do something that was instant when it came on. Then I played the idea for Alicia to make sure I wasn't bugging out. 'Am I going too far with this?' She was like, 'Nah. That can be a big smash.' "

Swizz and Alicia then sat down and came up with lyrics.

"Million Dollar Bill" is all about the feelings new love can bring. And although the duo felt they had a strong single for the album, Houston and Davis had been choosy when it came to picking the songs for the album that has been over three years in the making. But Houston loved the tune.

"She was so excited Alicia wanted to be involved in her project," Swizz said. "More sisterly love-type of vibe. Like, 'Wow, one of my sisters that I respect in music is reaching out and helping when she could be doing a lot of other things in this world.' "

Keys and Beatz got Tony Maserati to mix the record, but were tweaking right up until the night of the listening party. Davis wanted the drums to be a little harder on the finished version, so Swizz had Maserati take the modulation off the song and turn the drums all the way up.

"I want this to be one of the biggest records of her comebacks," Swizz noted. "I want her to be onstage at the Grammys talking about this record."

At the listening party, the crowd cheered when the track came on.

"To get a standing ovation for a song we put so much work into was like, 'Wow,' " Beatz recalled. "That's why Alicia was taping [the listening party] — we're capturing the moments. We was like, 'We can't miss this, this is history.' I was super happy."

Michael Jackson Doctor's Office Searched In Manslaughter Investigation

Raid of Dr. Conrad Murray's Houston office was conducted based on preliminary autopsy results, AP reports.
By Gil Kaufman

The attorney for Michael Jackson's personal doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray, confirmed Wednesday (July 22) that when officials executed a search warrant on his client's office in Houston, it was in connection with an investigation seeking evidence of manslaughter in the singer's death.

"We can confirm that a search warrant was executed today on Dr. Murray's offices in Houston, Texas," reads the statement from attorney Ed Chernoff about the search, which The Associated Press said was conducted based on preliminary autopsy results. "We reviewed the warrant and remained on the premises while the search was being executed. The search was conducted by members of the DEA, two Robbery/Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department and Houston Police officers. The search warrant authorized law enforcement to search for and seize items, including documents, they believed constituted evidence of the offense of manslaughter."

Law-enforcement officials have described the probe into Jackson's death as a criminal case, and the wording of Chernoff's statement is a clear indication that investigators could be considering filing serious criminal charges against anyone tied to the June 25 death of the self-proclaimed King of Pop.

Among the items seized during the search of Murray's offices were images from a computer hard drive and 21 documents, none of which Chernoff said had previously been requested by police or the Los Angeles coroner's office. A spokesperson for Chernoff stressed that the action was "officially a search warrant and not a raid," as it had been widely described earlier in the day.

The various law-enforcement officials arrived in a 15-car caravan at Murray's Armstrong Medical Clinic midmorning and stayed for a little over two hours. Though not named as a suspect in Jackson's death, Murray has been a central figure in the investigation. He was hired by the 50-year-old singer to be his personal doctor in the months leading up to the planned July 13 kickoff of his 50-date This Is It residency at the O2 arena in London. Murray was present the day Jackson died, administering CPR to the singer after Jackson suffered cardiac arrest.

On Tuesday, Chernoff said in a statement that investigators from the Los Angeles coroner's office had asked for additional medical records from Murray and that, "based on Dr. Murray's minute-by-minute and item-by-item description of Michael Jackson's last days, he should not be the target of criminal charges."

Sources told People magazine that the focus of the search was the drug Propofol, the powerful anesthesia that Jackson might have taken before his death. TMZ reported that the agents were looking for "all medical records relating to Michael Jackson."

Late last month, Murray met with LAPD detectives for three hours to answer questions about Jackson's death. Detectives also impounded Murray's car, which was parked at Jackson's home, because it could contain evidence related to the singer's death. They also served search warrants to three different physicians. A spokesperson for the LAPD confirmed that the warrant was served on Murray on Wednesday but said because it was a sealed document no information about what officials were looking for, or what they took into evidence, would be released to the public.

In early July, Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse and nutritional counselor, told the AP that Jackson had begged her for Diprivan — also known as Propofol — but that she denied his requests because it could be harmful to his health. Late on Wednesday, TMZ reported that an official from the Los Angeles County Coroner's office had visited Lee's offices and left with Jackson's medical records; a spokesperson for the coroner's office could not be reached for comment at press time.

TMZ has also reported that Propofol was found at Jackson's house. The drug is extremely potent — it is given intravenously as a general anesthetic used to sedate patients for surgery — and is only available to medical personnel.

Last week, a spokesperson for the coroner's office told MTV News that the results of toxicology tests on Jackson were in hand but that officials were waiting for all the reports on the results to come in before announcing the details to the public; those reports are expected within the next 10 days.

Matt Giraud Plays A Rabid Adam Lambert Fan As A 'Practical Joke'

LOS ANGELES — The American Idols Live! tour is well under way, and for fifth-place finisher Matt Giraud, it provides the perfect opportunity to let loose, both onstage and off.

When not rocking a three-song set of the Fray's "You Found Me," the Black Crowes' version of "Hard to Handle" and Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind," Giraud loves meeting his supporters outside the venue — even if a few of them can be a little intense occasionally.

"Fans have been great. Some of them are a little crazy, but others ... some really love you, really support you," Giraud told MTV News at a recent tour stop in L.A.

So how does Matt deal with the more stalker-inclined fans, whom he affectionately called "creepers"? He messes with them!

"The other day, there was a bunch of people waiting for Adam [Lambert] at the hotel. And as kind of a practical joke, I went into the group of women, kind of really low-key, and waited with them for Adam to come," Giraud laughed.

Matt's "low-key" disguise wasn't as good as he thought, because it didn't take long for the "Idol" fans to recognize him: "They knew it was me, and they were like, 'What are you doing?' And I was like, 'Just waiting for Adam!' "

But Matt's level of commitment didn't end there. "As [the other 'Idol' contestants] came out, I started snapping pictures, and I was like, 'There he is!' And I chased him onto the bus," Matt recalled.

At the end of the day, Matt says the practical jokes are all in good fun. "None of us take it too seriously, even Adam. He'll laugh at that kind of stuff," Giraud said, adding, "We're having too much fun, honestly."

Holly Montag Settles Beef With Spencer Pratt

'He's a great guy in a lot of ways,' Heidi's sister says.

Heidi Montag's sister, Holly Montag, may have been responsible for one of the most memorable moments of last season's "Hills" wedding finale when she threw food at her sister's very expensive handbag. The action seemed to stem from some preexisting friction between Holly and Heidi's husband, Spencer Pratt.

"I did not get tipsy. ... All right, I was completely blacked out," she joked to MTV News about the incident. "I was on a seven-day bender. I don't know what you want from me."

But Holly insists that these days things are a lot better between her and Speidi. "At first it was touch and go, and we had our problems," she said. "I think we've ironed through most of them."

Holly said that since they all appeared on "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" the relationship has become a lot stronger. "He's been so supportive with this last show, and he came there rooting for me," she explained. "We've gotten a lot closer. He's hysterical."

Plus, Holly can't hate too much on a guy with whom her sister is in love and who is equally in love with her. "He's a great guy in a lot of ways ... possibly I just didn't see [it] before," she said. "He's treating my sister incredibly well, and that's all I could ask for."

So, with Lauren Conrad gone and Spencer and Holly settling their beef, who will be Spencer's next target? Only time will tell, because Holly doesn't seem to be dishing. "I have no idea," she said. "But I'm sure that Spencer will find someone to focus his aggressions on."
