Behind the Beats: Sean C. and LV

Sometimes it's just easy for producers Sean C. and LV, a.k.a. Grind Music Inc. — play the beat, let the artist rap over it, done. Classic.

"We had that Michael Jackson sample. L went up there to Yonkers and played them the beat," Sean C. said of Jadakiss' new street jam, "One More Step." "It's pretty simple, straightforward."

"Soon as he heard it," LV added. "I played, like, 20 seconds and he was like, 'I already know what that is. Don't even worry about that.' "

"It was a blessing they got it on some 'We Gon Make It'-type vibe," C., a former A&R rep at Loud Records, added.

Sean C. and LV have incredible credentials and have worked with the best of the best.

"This is a plaque I got for Reasonable [Doubt]," Sean said, holding up his reminder from his early work with Jay-Z. C. co-produced "Can't Knock the Hustle."

It was on Jay-Z's last album that the two friends — who grew up in the same neighborhood but didn't start working together until 2002 — proved themselves as one of hip-hop's most viable production teams. Working with Diddy, they handled six songs off 2007's American Gangster, including the sonically combustible theme "Roc Boys."

After that, the phone rang off the hook. The two did work on Busta Rhymes' "Don't Touch Me," Ghostface's "Barrel Brothers" and Fat Joe's "I Won't Tell," among others.

"We wanna just keep putting good music out," said L, who came up as Big Pun's DJ. "You just wanna stay relevant and stay hot. So that's what we got to prove to ourselves. We know we could do it. You always talk about, 'I'm nice, I'm nice' — now it's time to show it. Anything you need, come down. It's like Home Depot — Beat Depot."

"It works different ways for different joints," Sean C. said about how the two work in the lab. "It might be a day when L would have an ill sample, then he'll start f---ing with it and I might find some drums for it ... or a vocal sample to go on top of it. We just make good music. That's what it's about."

"Every beat is different," L insisted. "We just do it."

On Ghostface Killah: "We cooking that up right now. The last three Ghost albums we been on. The last one we had five [tracks]. ... The chemistry with Ghost is very good. It's mostly an automatic thing. He'll have a beat CD for a minute and when he's ready, he's like, 'I want this one this one and this one.' It just happens." - Sean C.

On Clipse: "We got three on [their next album]. I'm exited about that. They spit your head off. It's hard, straightforward, aggressive. They do what they do." - Sean C.

"The beats don't sound like us. One of them does, but the others don't." - LV

On Slaughterhouse: "We're really in the beginning stages of it. We're trying to scope a sound for Slaughter House so it's their sound, not somebody else's. We're sending them joints, they got a bunch of joints they picked." - Sean C.

On Wale: "I think he sounds real good. I definitely like the record we did. I like the Cool & Dre record. We went in a few times with him. The joint we did got Travis Barker on the drums. Wale got that done while he was is in L.A. The beat was done, then Travis played over it, then we played on top of what Travis did." - LV

"It's called 'OG.' He's talking about how OGs schooled him to the game and how they was when they were young and how he listens to them. It's not a street OG thing, but he touches on how things were different at that time." - Sean C.

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From the Underground

Recently on BET's "106 & Park," 50 Cent spoke on how he, Eminem and Dr. Dre are probably the most powerful crew of artists in the music business today. Dre's a legend, Eminem is rolling — his Relapse went #1 last week — and Fif has been very successful as well. But since 50 and Em are so tight, will we ever see the two of them make an entire LP together? DJ Whoo Kid says the project has been talked about, but he isn't holding his breath waiting for it to happen.

"They been talking about that sh-- for years," Whoo Kid said. "We even talked about it in the mixtape format. It's an incredible situation [that] I hope one day goes down. Who wouldn't want to see that? I don't know what they gonna call that. I remember Em joked about that, 'Let's call it Ebony and Ivory.' Society is gonna have to force these guys to do it ... the scheduling, Em's album, 50's album — it's all scheduling. We've talked about it the last three, four years. You would want to see it, right?"

Of course — just like we would love to see the Jay-Z and Nas album, the Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre album or even that T-Wayne LP. But, like Whoo Kid, we'll believe it when we see it.

"I don't think Em and 50 will ever get it together to do an album," journalist Elliott Wilson said. "I know there was talk of [a joint album] when 50 first blew up and it was gonna be called Black and White. I personally love that title," the founder and CEO of RapRadar.com continued. "I'm sure there are plenty of unreleased records they've done and some kinda compilation could be released one day. But as far as a full-fledged album recorded together, that's doubtful. Then again, this is hip-hop, so what the f--- do we know?"

DJ Whoo Kid added that when 50 and Em are in the studio, they bring out the best in each other.

"The element of Dre being there, too, brings their bars up," Whoo Kid said. "They're both excited, crazy. They're already excited with each other. You see the verses are way up there, the creativity is way up there. 50 is influenced by [Em's] creativity where he crosses the line. The only time you see 50 buggin' out is when they're together. Whereas when 50's solo, he's creative too, but into the gangsta world, the thug sh--. Em showed him there's other lines out there you can f--- with.

"In the beginning it was business," he continued about 50 and Em's relationship. "They naturally grew into a family-type bond. 50 hangs more with Eminem and he's more connected with Eminem than Dre. Not to say 50 and Dre don't get along — they're really cool, they're friends and everything, but it's mostly business. But 50's gonna go to Eminem's wedding, 50's gonna go to Eminem's barbecue, they're gonna go on vacation together. They're more into the family sh--."

"Although I've never been around Eminem and 50 together," Wilson told us, "I believe that their friendship is built on loyalty and trust. I think 50 is Em's biggest fan and supporter who always shows his appreciation to Marshall for enabling him to build an incredible life. He doesn't even know how to not show that gratitude. And 50's probably one of the few people in this world Em can truly confide in."

'Twilight' Best Kiss Nominee Was Born On Catherine Hardwicke's Bed

'They went a little too far,' director recalls of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's Movie Award-nominated lip-lock.

VENICE, California — An acclaimed indie filmmaker who hit the big time with last year's "Twilight," Catherine Hardwicke takes pride in doing things differently than most directors. For years, she's held "chemistry reads" at her house, switching out various actors while making them feel at home. And, as is now the stuff of "Twilight" legend, 18 months ago she invited two young actors named Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart into her bedroom.

"This is the bed. That's where we had the first kiss between Rob and Kristen," Hardwicke beamed on Thursday when we visited her home just blocks from the beach, to celebrate such MTV Movie Awards moments as the Best Kiss nominee born on her own personal bed. "We did the audition — the chemistry read — here to see if these two would have chemistry. To see if their kiss would be exciting and cool.

"They came to my house — they had just met," Hardwicke remembered, inviting MTV News' Tim Kash to sit on the same edge of the bed where RPattz had made his move all those months before. "I said, 'I know you just met, but I need you to do this scene. We're gonna do it in my bedroom, on the bed — and you're really gonna kiss.'

"Kristen already had to kiss three other guys that day," Hardwicke smiled, addressing the Twilighters. "I know that's torturous, ladies."

Then it came time for the young actor they were referring to as "Bachelor Number Three." "She was kind of sleepy and just hanging out — and then Robert appeared in the room," Hardwicke remembered. "His hair was a little different — it was his Dalí hair, with the black bangs."

Although the finished product would be sexy enough for a Movie Awards nomination, Rob and Kristen's first smooch was anything but. "He was a bit nervous, because suddenly you've just met a girl and you're going to start making out with the person — and someone is filming," remembered Hardwicke, who was capturing test footage on film to show the studio. "[Pattinson] was really wild on the first take — use your imagination.

"I had to tell him, 'This is going to be a PG-13 movie!' and have him settle down a little bit," she laughed. "Afterwards, Kristen and I were looking at each other like, 'Whoa!'

"They had to do it three times," she remembered. "The first time, they went a little too far, and I was like, 'I can't show this to anybody at the studio!' After we finished the whole thing and we had met bachelors one, two, three and four, Kristen said, 'It has to be Rob.' She basically threatened me."

Not even two years later, Pattinson and Stewart have emerged as one of the great cinematic love stories for this generation. And on Sunday night, perhaps the MTV Movie Awards will write the final chapter on their iconic kiss. But more importantly: Where does the bed go from here? The Smithsonian? A tour for Twilighters?

"Well, I've been thinking about it," Hardwicke said of tours of her home. "But this is actually my bed. I have to sleep here every night!"

50 Cent, Eminem On Relationship With Dr. Dre: 'We Understand Our Positions'

'When [we] come together, I'm actually the smallest person in our circle,' 50 says of Em and Dre.

Two-thirds of the infamous "Three-Headed Monster" were out in New York this week: Eminem appeared on BET's "106 & Park" and brought out G-Unit General 50 Cent as a surprise guest to help share the triumph of Em's Relapse debuting at #1 on the Billboard albums chart.

"I think we're absolutely in a great space, considering his project is where it's at, #1. And it's working," 50 said about the "monster" that is him, Eminem and Dr. Dre. "Until they find a collaboration of artists that work together as well as we work together, I don't think we got issues."

50 said he and the two guys that signed him work so well together because everybody knows their roles.

"One of the most important portions of our relationships is us understanding our positions," Fif explained. "I'm like King Kong when I'm by myself, and when [me, Em and Dre] come back, come together, I'm actually the smallest person in our circle. I get a chance to be down to earth."

So if Fif is the hairy beast that terrified the natives of Skull Island as well as the visitors of the Empire State Building, Em says he's the creature that blew fire and stomped through Japan.

"Godzilla? Maybe Godzilla," Em smiled about what creature he might be. "I don't know. I think the best thing about the combination of me, 50 and Dre is that we take criticism from each other, we listen to input. We're always trying to do better."

So where was Dr. Dre? Maybe working. Both 50 and Slim Shady assured the live audience and the fans at home the legendary producer's long-awaited Detox album is well under way, and on its way.

"I heard eight records," 50 revealed. He also said that Dre has just under a dozen songs finished.

"There's probably 10 records," Eminem confirmed.

Rihanna To Be Called To Testify In Chris Brown Case

Rihanna's attorney says D.A. has indicated she will be subpoenaed.

First, Chris Brown broke his silence. Now, Rihanna might be next.

The female pop star's lawyer told reporters Rihanna is likely to appear at a court hearing next month as a possible witness in the assault case against former boyfriend Chris Brown. According to The Associated Press, attorney Donald Etra said prosecutors have indicated to him that Rihanna will receive a subpoena to testify during a preliminary hearing in a Los Angeles County courtroom on June 22.

"The D.A. has advised me that she will be subpoenaed [to testify]," Etra told media gathered outside the courtroom on Thursday (May 28), according to People.com. "She absolutely will comply," Etra said, adding that his client would be subject to cross-examination by Brown's lawyer.

During that hearing next month, the judge will determine if there is enough evidence to move forward with the case against Brown. Brown is facing felony assault charges after allegedly assaulting Rihanna in February. Brown pleaded not guilty to the charges and did not appear in court on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Brown spoke publicly for the first time since the incident, which occurred on the eve of this year's Grammy Awards. In a YouTube video, Brown, appearing with rapper Bow Wow, said into a camera that he "ain't a monster" and thanked his fans for their support. Rihanna has yet to speak publicly since the alleged altercation took place.

Brown's attorney, Mark Geragos, attempted to receive police records and other investigative material from authorities in court this morning. Geragos was seeking to have the case against his client dismissed after photos of a battered Rihanna from the night in question leaked online. The photos were in the possession of the Los Angeles Police Department. The judge, however, denied Geragos' request. According to the AP, the judge told Brown's attorney the motion was premature. Geragos will be able to refile the request after the preliminary hearing.

Paramore's 'Decode,' Miley Cyrus' 'Climb' Face Off At MTV Movie Awards

Bruce Springsteen and A.R. Rahman take on the tweens for Best Song From a Movie on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.

There's quite an epic battle brewing for Best Song From a Movie at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. There's not a genre left unturned, and every type of movie is represented by the nominated songs.

The category is split between Oscar-nominated songs like A.R. Rahman's "Jai Ho" from "Slumdog Millionaire" and Bruce Springsteen's title track for "The Wrestler." But don't count out the teen-girl power: Paramore's "Twilight" theme "Decode" is competing against Miley Cyrus' empowerment ballad "The Climb" from "Hannah Montana."

The clear front-runners seem to be Paramore and Cyrus, since they each hail from tween-favorite soundtracks. Paramore also gets a push from the Twilighter community, which is very, very loyal to all things "Twilight."

No disrespect to Springsteen and Rahman, but when two older dudes are trying to compete with the forces of Cyrus and Paramore, well, let's just say the Academy isn't voting for this one.

Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams is a Twilighter herself, so when she was asked to do a song for the movie, she jumped at the chance. "I chose the title 'Decode,' because the song is about the building tension, awkwardness, anger and confusion between Bella and Edward," she said. "Bella is the only mind Edward can't read, and I feel like that's a big part of the first book and one of the obstacles for them to overcome. It's one added tension that makes the story even better."

Pretty Ricky's Spectacular Says Suggestive Video Was 'For The Ladies'

R&B artist says 'Strip With Spectacular' clip is the first in a series of videos he plans to post online.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Pretty Ricky member Spectacular set off a frenzy online earlier this week when the singer posted a video online of himself gyrating suggestively wearing nothing but skimpy red briefs. The video served as his challenge (albeit an odd one) to other young R&B acts, including Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Omarion and Day26.

"To all them boys out there that be grindin', I wanna know who's number one," Spectacular said to the camera, before Pretty Ricky's new single "Tipsy" played in the background. Spectacular then began dancing.

Online commenters mocked the clip and questioned whether the R&B singer were gay. Spectacular addressed the response when he called Chicago radio personality Kendra G.

"Everybody knows I'm not gay," Spectacular said, adding that the video and the briefs were for the ladies. "Them little tight man drawers ... I bought 'em to show off my cuts [in my stomach]. I wanted to show off my body. The underwear was for the ladies."

The Pretty Ricky member said the video is titled "Strip With Spectacular," and it's just the first in a series of clips he plans to put online. He also said the challenge was all in fun.

"Everybody grindin' now," Spectacular said of the suggestive dance style. "Before we came out, no one was bringing you that but the old-school cats. We brought it back out. But everybody is doing it now. It's like a dance competition, though. I don't do that pop-and-lock, I grind."

Katy Perry graces the cover of the latest Complex magazine, and inside the pop rocker ditches her trademark bright attire — you know, the whole fruit thing — for a much racier, sexier look.

"It's a bit of a darker side of me, a little S&M," Perry told the mag for their June/July issue. "Though I did have to hang from a cage, which could have easily gone wrong with the 5-inch heels I was wearing."

The nine-photo spread features Perry not only caged, but sporting a revealing black corset, skintight leggings and impossibly high heels. The look may be a move to match the "I Kissed a Girl" siren's new musical direction. Perry told the magazine that her debut, One of the Boys, was recorded when she was between 17 and 23. Now 25, Perry says her next project will be more mature.

Last month she spoke with MTV News and discussed her sophomore project.

"I definitely want to make a follow-up pop, fun record. I'm not looking to alienate my fans, but I can't be that grown-up Shirley Temple girl wearing the stupid strawberry in her hair all the time ... because I'd kill myself or someone else would for me," Perry laughed. "So I'm really excited to always be evolving, and changing; with my look, with my music — it keeps me entertained as well.

"[Boys] was like my 'dear diary' album, from when I was, like, 17 to 23," Perry added. "It was my perspective then, and it was so widespread, and some of the things that really meant a lot to me at 17, you know, they change. They evolve. So this record will be a very present record for me. It will be me now. It won't take five years — hopefully. It will be Katy Perry as a young, 25-year-old woman."

What Will Happen At Chris Brown Preliminary Hearing?

Next month's hearing, where Rihanna could be asked to testify, will determine whether case will go to trial.
By Jayson Rodriguez

After charges were filed, a not-guilty plea entered and motions denied, Chris Brown's case is finally moving forward. On Thursday (May 28), a judge in the assault case ordered a preliminary hearing that will take place next month in Los Angeles.

So what exactly will occur during that hearing? According to legal expert Peter T. Haven, a preliminary hearing is when prosecutors argue that they have enough evidence in the case to go to trial.

"During the preliminary, which is significant, the prosecution puts the case in front of the judge to convince the judge that they have sufficient evidence to go forward with a criminal prosecution," Haven told MTV News. "The defense then tries to kill the case. [But] if there's enough evidence, the prosecution could then get a trial date."

In Brown's case, there is a lengthy police report, the leaked photo of a battered Rihanna and a willing district attorney. Haven, who worked on O.J. Simpson's controversial book "If I Did It," spoke with MTV News by phone on Thursday after the judge's ruling, and he believes the prosecution has a very strong case.

The Los Angeles-based lawyer also suggested that both parties involved — Brown and Rihanna — might ultimately push for a plea deal in the interest of discretion. Should the preliminary hearing proceed, additional details from the night in question might arise that could reveal damaging information.

Rihanna's attorney, Donald Etra, said Thursday that his client is expected to be subpoenaed to testify next month. He also said Rihanna will be subject to cross-examination if she takes the stand. Brown's attorney, Mark Geragos, has not offered any comments on the matter.

Should the case reach the preliminary hearing, Haven said once a ruling is made, a trial date would be expected to begin in 30 to 90 days.

Last month, according to multiple reports, Geragos and the D.A. were attempting to reach a deal but haven't come to an agreement.

Now you can see for yourself — Kristin Cavallari is heading to "The Hills"!

A new video clip from Sunday night's season finale of "The Hills" shows Cavallari's debut on the series. Rumors of her involvement had been circulating since it was announced that Lauren Conrad will be leaving the show, and just weeks ago, it was confirmed that Cavallari will have a starring role in season six. Both Cavallari and Conrad made their MTV debuts on the series "Laguna Beach," which spawned "The Hills."

In the clip, we see Cavallari entering into the Speidi wedding to an ominous music cue. As she walks down the aisle, we can see the rest of "The Hills" cast in attendance: Brody, Lo, Justin Bobby, Audrina, the scandalous Stacie the Bartender, and even a Perez Hilton sighting in the back row.

"The Hills" season finale airs on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, just before the MTV Movie Awards. Lo Bosworth, Frankie Delgado and Stephanie Pratt will join MTV News' Sway and Tim Kash as MTV Movie Awards weekend guest hosts.

MTV News talked with Cavallari earlier this month about her joining the show. "I'm actually kind of excited," she said. "It's fun because I know the whole crew. It's almost like going home. It's really comfortable. I know what to expect going into it, so I think I'm just more excited than anything."

Like Cavallari, the current "Hills" residents are also excited to have her joining them. "I've been getting phone calls. I think it's great," Cavallari said. "The fact that the cast is really excited makes me even more excited. They've all been really sweet and are welcoming me with open arms. So it's been great."

And although everyone has been great about her joining the show, her biggest cheerleaders come in the form of Speidi, who have already told MTV News how excited they are to welcome Cavallari.

"Spencer and Heidi called me and they were just like going off," Cavallari said. "It's going to be great."

Don't miss the season finale of "The Hills," airing Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
