Nick Cannon Insists: No Beef With Eminem Over Mariah Carey Dis

Nick Cannon was pretty steamed over Eminem's brutal lampooning of the singer and his wife, Mariah Carey, in the song "Bagpipes from Baghdad, which appears on Eminem's new LP, Relapse. Cannon wrote and then quickly took down a long blog post where he accused Eminem of being racially insensitive and "still obsessed with my wife, the same female that wouldn't let him get to second base from eight years ago"; Eminem later said Cannon had misinterpreted the song.

Entertainment Weekly talked with Cannon on Thursday about the issue.

"I felt like I said what I had to say," Cannon said. "I didn't take [the post] down, like, 'Oh, somebody instructed me to do it' or anything like that. It was just one of those things, like, I said it."

As for the real reason he took the post down, Cannon said it had to do with the traffic to his Web site, which "pretty much crashed my site. There'd be thousands and thousands of comments and people couldn't leave comments on other posts or any of that stuff. So that was the only reason why I took it down."

And while noted that he doesn't have any regrets about what he said — "I feel exactly the same way by it and stick by everything, but I think it's one of those things where it becomes that it's not really that big of a deal, you know?" — he did say he has no beef with the MC.

"I never even considered it as beef," he said. "It's not beef. It's just, Hey, I heard the record. I said what I had to say."

Cannon went on to praise his relationship with Carey. "I feel that my relationship with my wife is one of the best things — or the best thing — that's ever happened to me, and it has nothing to do with celebrity or this industry. It's all about, you know, just love and finding love and being happy and respecting the union that it is."

Kanye West's 'Thank You And You're Welcome' Makes Philosophy 'Simple'

After selling it online, book will hit stores July 7.

Kanye West loves to collaborate, whether it's on music, album artwork or tour lighting. Last year, he teamed with marketer/philosopher J. Sakiya Sandifer to write a book of "Kanye-isms" called "Thank You and You're Welcome." After selling it on his Web site, the multi-Grammy winner told MTV News the book hits stores July 7.

"He inspired the format of the book, because he wrote a book called 'Think, Think, Think and Think Again,' " West said Friday morning (May 22) about Sandifer. "[He did] bullet points in bold graphics, and he expounded upon them ... whereas books hide the main points chapters in. You have to read so much to get so much out of it. We wanted to make it simple for people who are non-readers, who don't feel like doing all that, and still get the point across."

One of Kanye's favorite philosophies in the book is "Get used to getting used."

"To use someone is necessary. What's negative is to misuse, overuse or abuse somebody," West said. "To use is necessary. If you can't get used, then you're useless."

"That really came from my entrepreneurial journey," Sandifer said. "I would complain when my phone wasn't ringing. 'No, I want to be used.' Being the resident philosopher, I put it in that context."

West and Sandifer call working together a "great collaboration." They've also collaborated on some of 'Ye's acceptance speeches and a line from "The Good Life"

" 'Having money's not everything; not having it is,' " Sandifer repeated of the line he came up with. "That's where the real problem is — when you don't have it."

While West and Sandifer might make another book, it probably won't be a sequel to "Thank You."

"It's just gonna be another collection of our ideas and theories," Sandifer said. "It's not gonna be like 'Thank You and You're Welcome Volume Two.' I think that would be limiting."

Kris Allen Still Thinks Adam Lambert Deserved To Win 'American Idol'

Posted: 22 May 2009 12:35 AM PDT

'He's one of the most gifted performers I've ever met,' the new champ says of his rival.
By Katie Byrne

Kris Allen might have been a stranger to "American Idol" fans before the top 36 performance shows, but three months later, he was crowned the show's new champion.

How did he do it? We caught up with the 23-year-old newlywed from Conway, Arkansas, to talk about his under-the-radar journey, whether he'll be going country and what Kanye West said about his version of "Heartless."

Q: After you were announced as the winner, you said Adam Lambert deserved to win. Why did you say that?

A: I still feel that way. I feel like Adam deserved it just as much as I did. He was the most consistent person all year, he's one of the most gifted performers I've ever met, he's really just a great guy. We became great friends, and we told each other that day, "You deserve it," and he shot it back at me. I think it could have gone either way, and America could not have gotten it wrong.

Q: During Tuesday night's performance finale, the judges seemed to not really comment on your performances of the coronation song, "No Boundaries." Why do you think that was?

A: After that last song, I don't think me or Adam were happy with our performances at all. I think that they were not trying to judge us on that song, more than anything, and just judge us on the year, which was kind of nice. It felt great to be judged on what we've done throughout the year and not exactly what we'd done on that song.

Q: Do you have any plans to change up "No Boundaries" to make it fit your style a little more?

A: The track is out for sale right now, so there's not much we can do for it. The track actually sounds really good; I listened to it. But doing the live performances, I've kinda been doing them just acoustically, just on guitar and maybe piano. It fits me a little bit better. The song is good. They kind of have some stipulations on what they're supposed to do with these songs. They have to write the words a certain way. It's supposed to be this nice feeling. To have your first single not be something you were a part of writing, it's a little bit weird, but I can't complain.

Q: What kind of music do you see yourself putting out?

A: For me, I felt like I did exactly what I wanted to do on the show that I would want to do on a record. ... When I went on the show and did "Ain't No Sunshine," I felt like that's the kind of stuff I wanted to do, stuff that kind of has that feel, stuff that kind of moves people.

Q: After your duet with Keith Urban on Wednesday, are you thinking about going in a country direction with your debut?

A: I was actually afraid of that. For me, I don't feel like I would go that country way. That's not my type of music and that's not the feeling that I want in my album. But we had a great time together. He was a great guy, and I respect him so much as an artist and musician.

Q: How did you decide to rework Kanye West's "Heartless"?

A: We got to do whatever we wanted to do, as long as it got cleared. I was listening to the Kanye album, because I think it's great, and the song came across, and I was just like, "What if I did this song and made it my own?" And I was just like, "You know what? I'm not gonna ask anybody about it, I'm just gonna go for it and be bold and be risky." I did it, and I think it got a lot of good reviews. I was really excited that I got to do something like that, because I think it showed people what I could do.

Q: Did you hear anything about Kanye's response to your version?

A: I haven't heard from him, obviously. But I have heard some other people say that he blogged about it and put the video up of me on his blog. That really meant a lot.

Q: Was your wife angry after Simon said you should have hidden her away to garner more female fans?

A: Absolutely not. She had actually been saying that kind of stuff before. She was like, "I don't know if you need to mention me." She was trying to look out for me as well.

Q: Your top 36 performance was one of the first times we saw you on the show. Were you frustrated by your lack of exposure in the audition and Hollywood rounds?

A: I think there's a little bit of, "Wow, they're not showing me." But it was more shock than anything, because I felt like I had done my thing and a lot of other people had gotten shown. For me, that's kind of the way I live my life. I'm kinda laid-back and low-key, and every once in a while, I'll stick my head out. So that's kind of how I did the competition, and it seemed to work out, so I can't be mad at that.

Q: What is your goal as an artist?

A: For me, the only thing I really want to do is just be respected in the music industry and my music be respected. Whether that means selling albums or winning Grammys or just people liking your music, that's all I really wanna do.

While the 2009 MTV Movie Awards will look toward the future with appearances by rising superstars like Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Shia LaBeouf, we must pay our respects to the great actors who paved the Hollywood way. That's why we're bestowing MTV's highest honor, the Generation Award, on Mr. Ben Stiller.

And, of course, the guy just cracks us up. He's portrayed some of the most memorable comic creations in the last 20 years: oblivious male model Derek Zoolander, who can only turn right ("I'm not an ambi-turner!" he explained) and spent years perfecting his astonishing "Magnum" pose; perpetually aggrieved and unfortunately named Gaylord Focker, who claimed he could milk a cat but probably not Robert De Niro; and last year's "Tropic Thunder" star Tugg Speedman, the self-absorbed action star trying, and spectacularly failing, to be taken seriously as an actor.

In fact, Stiller has been nominated in the brand-new MTV Movie Awards category Best WTF Moment, based on one particularly gruesome, and hilarious, "Thunder" scene in which he tastes the decapitated head of Steve Coogan's character. If that moment alone doesn't merit a Generations award, what does?

"I am honored to be getting the Generation Award," Stiller said. "I was given my first show at MTV and also canceled for the first time. I also was secretly having an affair with J.J. Jackson, so it brings back pleasant memories."

Stiller has also excelled behind the scenes, writing and directing films like "Zoolander" and "Thunder." He also directed the 1994 cultural milestone "Reality Bites."

Past recipients of the Generation Award include Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.

Will the vampires grab more trophies than the slumdog? What was the year's ultimate onscreen WTF moment? It's up to you to decide the winners of the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. Vote now, and tune in on May 31 at 9 p.m. ET, when the big show airs live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

Dolla's Family Disputes Alleged Killer's Claim Of Self-Defense

The family of slain rap artist Dolla (real name: Roderick Anthony Burton) responded to claims by the accused killer's lawyer that the shooting was done in self-defense, and that Dolla was a gang member. Aubrey Louis Berry allegedly shot and killed Dolla at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles on Monday. He was arrested later that day and charged Wednesday with two counts of assault with a firearm and one count of murder and is being held on $5 million bail; he has pleaded not guilty and remains in jail.

"There are three victims in this case, none of which is Aubrey Berry," the Burton family's spokesperson, Dennis Byron, said Friday (May 22) in a statement, adding to MTV News that the family was upset by the claim. "His claim of self-defense is very colorful but the fact is that he traveled from Atlanta with a loaded firearm — for which he didn't possess a carry permit for in the state of California — and then he assassinates Mr. Burton and attempts to shoot his cousin Will and his friend DJ Shabazz. Dolla was doing what he normally does, and that is to come to town and record in the studio and visit his family. He has been a recording artist for many years and being a member of any gang is as far-fetched as Mr. Berry's claim of self-defense. Mr. Price is attempting to argue his client's case in the media but the courtroom is where this matter will be dealt with."

On Thursday, Berry lawyer, Howard K. Price, told MTV News that his client had been victimized and threatened by Dolla over a previous incident at an Atlanta nightclub.

"If somebody has a reasonable perception that he is in danger of bodily injury or death, he has a right to defend himself," Price said. "He felt his life was in danger because of the previous altercation and what this guy [Burton] is reputed to be, which is [a member of] the Crips [street gang] and the way he conducted himself ... and the way his crew approached him when they left the restaurant and followed him to the parking lot."

On Friday at 6 p.m., a viewing of Dolla's body will be held in Atlanta, and a memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. Friends, family and fans are welcome to attend the viewing.

Adam Lambert Never Felt 'Stifled' By 'American Idol'

Posted: 22 May 2009 12:58 AM PDT

'They've been 100 percent supportive of everything that I've done,' over-the-top runner-up says.
By Katie Byrne

Adam Lambert might have been one of the most theatrical contestants ever on "American Idol," but that doesn't mean he's heading straight for Broadway.

We caught up the runner-up to talk about his theater roots, Katy Perry's rhinestone tribute and why he's not losing sleep over his loss.

Q: A lot of your fans are pretty disappointed about your loss. How are you feeling about it?

A: I know it sounds cliché, but I really feel like I won by getting to the final. To me, it's not about the title of American Idol, it's about the experience. I made music, and I got to do a different performance every week, and I was able to use "American Idol" as a platform to get myself out there. I have a career. There's no need to dwell on the negative. We should look forward and be excited about an album and the rest of my career. That's where I'm at.

Q: If a Broadway show came calling after the tour, would you be interested? Or do you plan to focus on a recording career?

A: I think my direction right now is to try to become a recording artist. I spent time doing the theater thing for a number of years. I'm not turning my back on it, but I'm definitely going in the other direction right now.

Q: There's been a lot of theatricality in rock over the years, and you seem to be bringing that back. Why do you gravitate to that over-the-top style?

A: I think it's just in the name of good entertainment. First and foremost, it is about the music. It just kind of packages it in a little bit more of a flashy, interesting, dynamic way, in my opinion. Theatricality is just another way of performing. I don't think it's a better way or the way, but it's my way. [Laughs.]

Q: What did you think about Katy Perry BeDazzling your name on the back of her Elvis cape during her "Idol" performance?

A: I was shocked, and I was completely honored. I had a huge smile on my face the minute I saw it. I wasn't prepared for that. I didn't know she was going to do that, so you can imagine my surprise.

Q: Do you think all the talk about your sexuality had an effect on voting?

A: Probably! [Laughs.]

Q: What kind of album do you plan to put out?

A: We're at the drawing board right now, trying to figure it out. My view of the record industry is that it's a little too specific lately. The labels tend to try to put one box around every artist and keep them in one genre. To me, I'm so fortunate because I got to use this show to get myself out there, so we don't have to go about it that way. Obviously, we want the album to have a cohesive sound, but I think it can kind of be a collection of different styles with me at the center of it. Everybody knows who I am singing it, so that's the common thread.

Q: Your style seems to be a throwback to late-'80s, early '90s glam rock. Do you hope to resurrect that?

A: Maybe little bits of it. My thing is that I don't want to do one specific genre. I'm more about fusion. I kind of like adding little elements of things into the final mix. If anything, I'm more fond of the '70s glam feel than the '80s, even though I have that style of vocal. But we'll see what happens. I'm kind of experimenting with that. There are a lot of pop artists using the glam kind of vibe in their music currently, so I think I'm actually part of a wave, and there just happens to not be many guys doing it right now.

Q: With all the risks you took on the show, did anyone ever tell you "no"?

A: No! [Laughs.] The really cool thing about this show is that they've been 100 percent supportive of everything that I've done, every aspect of everything I've done, from the music to what I'm wearing to how I perform. I would go into a vocal session and be like, "Well, I have this idea. Can we try it?" "Yeah, sure, let's try it." [To] Ricky Minor and the band, I'd be like, "What about this? Can we try something like this?" "Yeah, let's try it, man." It's been very positive and creative. And never once for a second did I feel stifled in any way.

David Cook Tried Not To Cry During 'American Idol' Finale Performance

On Wednesday night, a year after he was crowned the American Idol, David Cook performed on the season-eight finale, when Kris Allen was named this year's champion. During his performance, Cook paid tribute to his late brother Adam with the song "Permanent."

"For the finale this year, I was floored that they would allow me to have that platform," he told MTV News. "There's so many great artists out there that could have had that moment. The fact that they had me come back and perform 'Permanent,' something that was important to me, the charity and everything, to continue to give me that platform [was great]."

He does admit that although he was grateful for the chance to sing the song and bring attention to his charity, Accelerate Brain Trust Cure, he did hope that when he went out there, he wouldn't get too emotional and cry in front of everyone. "I was kind of half-joking with everyone beforehand that I always seem to cry at 'Idol,' " he said. "I really didn't want to with this last performance."

Luckily, the show offered him some eye candy (and some old friends) to keep him from tearing up. "It was difficult, but I just remember looking around the room and seeing, like, Cameron Diaz over here and Heather Locklear over here and the four judges in the front and just thinking it's such an oddly absurd moment, and I was here a year ago," he said. "To have those, for lack of a better way to phrase it, distractions, it was just like, 'Where in the world am I at right now?' It kind of helped me get through it."

For one brief moment during Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale, it seemed as if Kara DioGuardi and Katrina "Bikini Girl" Darrell had settled their feud when they performed Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love" together.

However, on Friday (May 22), Darrell gave an interview slamming DioGuardi for baring her bikini at the end of their performance. "I don't think she got the reaction she was hoping for. I think she probably thought I would cry or get mad, and I didn't — I played it off," Darrell told RadarOnline.com. "Looking back at the tape, she just made herself look stupid; she didn't make me look stupid."

Darrell also claimed that "Idol" producers cut off her mic when DioGuardi surprised her onstage. "I knew there were 100 million viewers, so I couldn't cry," she said. "I couldn't get mad. I just had to smile and deal with it. The show producers kind of said, 'I'm sorry.' I think they tested me. I think I did really well, considering all that I went through."

After the show, Darrell said her little sister had a nasty run-in with DioGuardi backstage. "We were walking, and [Kara] said, 'Oh, sweetie, I hope you didn't take anything personally,' " Darrell recalled. "I rolled my eyes, and my sister said, 'Hey, next time you try to upstage my sister, get a spray tan! How old are you — 45 or 50?' I looked back and shrugged. She kind of said what I was thinking but couldn't say!"

As for who looked better in a bikini, Darrell said: "Well, I'm not 50 years old, and I do spray tan!"
