Kanye West 'Inspired' By Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face' For Kid Cudi Single

Fire Starter: Bound To Blow

Masspike Miles had girls screaming way before he got his first tattoo or signed with Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group. The Roxbury, Massachusetts native used to get attention as a chubby kid during his stint in a short-lived R&B group in the early '90s.

"The whole thing is, I was also in a group called Perfect Gentlemen under Maurice Starr, who started New Edition and New Kids on the Block," Miles revealed. "So I was developed under Maurice Starr at a young age as well. I was on Warner Brothers at 11, 12 years old. I already had a taste of what was to come and what I had to deal with."

Masspike (born Miles Wheeler) was the youngest member of the group and sang lead on their self-titled LP. Unfortunately, Perfect Gentlemen didn't enjoy the longevity that New Edition and the New Kids did, and Miles soon found himself out of the game. He doesn't blame Starr, however, who New Edition accused of stealing money.

"A lot of people get into the game and they have this misconception of 'I'm gonna be rich,' " Mass said of New Edition's financial woes. "The game was totally different in the '80s. Your percentage and your royalties are gonna be different. If you got five people in a group, you're splitting $20,000 from a show — do the math. Twenty percent to the manager as well. At the end of the day, if you don't save your money right, and you ain't a proper hustler, then yeah, you're gonna get a VCR at the end of the day. I don't got nothing bad to say about Maurice Starr, 'cause he taught me a lot. And he taught them a lot. They wouldn't be who they are if it wasn't for him."

Miles went from the stage to the street when his entertainment funds started to dry up.

"I was on the block, getting in trouble, getting locked up," he said. "Holland Street in Roxbury. I was doing the things people do when they on the block. That's why I speak that real language on them records. That's my life. That's what I lived. If I ain't lived it, I'm speaking on something that my man lived and might have been a great concept to come up with. I was in the streets, then I took a step ... Benzino and Dave Mays from The Source magazine saw me in the grind and took me and put under The Source magazine. So I was doing a lot of modeling and all of that. But I was mostly in the streets."

While on his hustle, Masspike — named after the Massachusetts Turnpike that stretches from Springfield to Boston — kept producing records for himself and his business partner and fellow artist Smoke Bulga. Miles lucked out when he crossed paths with Rick Ross when the Bawse was on a promo run in Boston for Trilla.

"It's an honor being in the presence of such greatness — that's real language," Miles said of working with the Miami chart topper. "It's an honor to be in the studio with him. He's a mastermind. You're in the studio with somebody you know knows how to sell records — somebody you know who knows the game."

Masspike got his chance to shine on "Cigar Music," a bonus track off of Deeper Than Rap. A video was recently released on the Internet, in which Masspike gets his videographer on. He's been the cameraman for many of Ross' viral freestyle videos.

Masspike recently released his mixtape The Pursuit of Happiness with Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, Bigga Rankin and others. His debut is slated for release on Def Jam.

"It's an honor, it's a pleasure and I'm totally excited to be able to be put in a position like that — being one of the artists to be able to come out of Massachusetts along with New Edition, New Kids on the Block, Bobby Brown, BBD. It's an honor, point-blank, and I'm ready for it."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Kanye West says he's been there before. "I've had girlfriends who had girlfriends," he said. So when he discovered what Lady Gaga was actually singing about on "Poker Face," he was attracted to the record. Then when he saw her perform a different version of the song on the Internet, he was hooked. Kanye sampled the song for Kid Cudi's next single, "I Make Her Say," which was formerly titled "I Poke Her Face."

"It's a single for Cudi," Kanye explained. "Due to radio, the name of the song is called, 'I Make Her Say.' When I saw that YouTube, that's what made me fall in love with the song — when I saw her play it the acoustic version. I could hear all the melody lines. On the 'Poker Face' single, she sings it straightforward, almost, like, ripping it or chanting it. But this [acoustic version], you hear the Broadway melodies run up and down. I was inspired by that. I wanted to sample it. I thought it was really dope — just on some hip-hop, 'Say when I p-p-poke her face.'

"All the backstory to the song is really controversial," he continued. "When I found out that her actual song is about her making love to her boyfriend but really thinking about her girlfriend, I was like, 'Oh, that's crazy.' For us to even flip it to another level and challenge people's opinions, that's it."

Drake Says Kanye West Is 'The Most Influential Person' On His Sound

'He knows how to utilize great sounds and great music,' up-and-coming rapper says.
By Jayson Rodriguez

NEW YORK — With its mix of singing and rapping, Drake's buzz-building mixtape So Far Gone has drawn comparisons to Kanye West's latest effort 808s & Heartbreak. For his part, Drake said the Chicago lyricist had a huge impact on his music and even described 'Ye as "the most influential person" in shaping the young rapper's sound.

"Before I ever got the chance to meet him, Kanye West shaped a lot of what I do, as far as music goes," Drake told MTV News on Tuesday night before his show at S.O.B.'s. "We always, always, always took the time to listen to Kanye's music and appreciate it beyond. We searched the samples and we find out where his inspiration came from, because he has one of the best ears in music, period. He knows how to recognize great music that's not his. He knows how to utilize great sounds and great music. So before I met him, I had the utmost respect for Kanye West. I'd even go as far as to say he's the most influential person as far as a musician that I'd ever had in my life."

Drake said he and 'Ye initially met in Hawaii, where West has been working on music recently. The interaction was brief at first, but now the two are expected to collaborate on Drake's upcoming debut album. 'Ye attended Drake's New York show this week, and one of West's managers, Gee Roberson, acts as a co-manger for Drake.

Over the weekend, West returned the accolades in a post on his blog, saying that one of Drizzy's lines on Young Money's "Every Girl" is the rhyme of the year.

"Drake said, 'Do you like girls like I do?? Les-bi-honest!!!!!' Best line of the year so far!" West wrote in all caps.

As an upstart, Drake said the comment was hilarious and flattering.

"I feel like it's funny, because that's something he might have said," Drake said about the line. "[But] it's an honor that he's even looking at me as somewhat of an equal, somewhat of a peer. I think he's one of the greatest to ever do it."

Britney Spears Shoots Fake Perfume Ad For Logo's NewNowNext Awards

'She's having fun with her gay audience, because she's an official gay icon,' Logo's Christopher Willey says.

Britney Spears already has a popular perfume line, but sales might skyrocket if her newest scent makes it into stores: a fragrance called 'Mo that carries the tantalizing tagline "One spray and the gays will run your way!"

Too bad 'Mo — and the video promoting it — is a spoof, part of the viral-marketing campaign for the Logo network's NewNowNext awards show. MTV News called up the brains behind the clip to get the inside scoop about how the project came together and why Brit decided to take part.

"She's having fun with her gay audience, because she's an official gay icon at such a young and tender age," said Christopher Willey, a Logo executive producer. (Logo and MTV are both owned by Viacom.)

Willey explained that the tone of the awards show is "very playful, irreverent, doesn't take it too seriously." When they decided to give their Always Next, Forever Now award to Spears, Willey approached the singer's label and management with the idea for the faux perfume ad.

"We [wanted] something that would be fun and playful that we can celebrate/mock, and we thought, 'It's her perfume career,' " Willey said. "Because everyone knows every holiday season they bring out those commercials of her running through a forest or a hotel."

Spears' people loved the idea, although Willey did have to explain the meaning of 'Mo, which is a term of endearment within the gay community. "Britney herself wanted to make sure that the punch line — which is the word 'Mo — wasn't offensive in any way," Willey said.

A spokesperson for Spears told MTV News the singer was not available for comment on the spoof.

Logo shot Britney's "One spray and the gays will run your way!" line on the Los Angeles set of her video for "If U Seek Amy" and filled in the rest with footage from music videos and a documentary. The package will open the NewNowNext show as an imaginary message from the program's sponsor.

The second annual awards show airs June 13 at 9 p.m. ET and will feature appearances by Lady Gaga, Vanessa Williams, castmembers from "The Real Housewives of New York City" and a musical performance by Eve. And, of course, Spears will be on hand to accept her award.

"She has this natural rapport with the gay community," Willey said. "I think she just really likes her gay fans and she sees this as a way to talk directly to them, which she hasn't really done before."

Embattled R&B singer Chris Brown has taken to the Web to comment briefly on his alleged altercation with Rihanna and plug his forthcoming new album.

In a grainy YouTube video made with Bow Wow at NBA star Shaquille O'Neal's house, Brown addresses the camera for 30 seconds and ends his comments with a message to his fans, saying, "I ain't a monster."

"I don't do all this talking on the thing, this is just some new stuff I'm doing," Brown said, bending over and leaning into the camera. "I just wanna say 'what's up?,' because I ain't been out there in a minute. But the new album is gonna be coming soon. We working on it right now. It's called Graffiti. It's got everything on it, so y'all be ready for that. I'm about to drop a single this summer for y'all. We ain't going nowhere. Everybody that's haters, they just been haters. All my real fans, I love you. I ain't a monster."

Bow Wow, who appears in the background of the video, Tweeted about playing basketball with Brown, Chris Tucker and Shaq at the basketball player's home. The dispatch was posted on Twitter Tuesday night. "Me c breezy shaq chris tucker bout to play ball at shaq house! Shaq in dis big ass semi truck! Dat sh-- crazy," the rapper wrote.

Brown is due back in a Los Angeles courtroom on Thursday. He did not appear at a hearing late last month, where his attorney sought to have the case dismissed due to leaked photos and information about the case. Brown is facing felony assault charges and charges of making criminal threats after being arraigned in the case.

Will Ferrell And Danny McBride Give Andy Samberg Hosting Advice

'I hope he's sober,' Ferrell says of this year's host of the MTV Movie Awards.

Will Ferrell is an MTV Movie Awards veteran, and his friend and fast-rising Hollywood newcomer, Danny McBride, learned the ropes last year. Now, the comedic duo are offering their words of advice to this year's host, Andy Samberg.

"Number one," Will Ferrell began, "I hope he's sober."

"That is going to be his biggest obstacle," grinned McBride, the "Pineapple Express" star who is nominated for "Best Fight" alongside James Franco and Seth Rogen.

"That's going to be his biggest challenge — performing sober," Ferrell explained of his fellow "Saturday Night Live" breakout. "I'm just excited. I'm excited to see what Andy's going to bring to the table. He's a sharp, funny guy with beautiful hair. Has there been a host recently who's had as good of hair as Samberg?"

"I don't think so," McBride agreed, perhaps dissing the 'do's of Mike Myers, Jimmy Fallon and Lindsay Lohan. "No way."

"Probably not," said Ferrell, who stars with McBride in "Land of the Lost," due June 5. "I think he's gonna be the new Hugh Jackman of the MTV Movie Awards."

"Yup," McBride said of Jackman, whose song-and-dance stylings elevated the Oscars to new highs recently. "That's safe to say."

According to Ferrell, every MTV Movie Awards is a spectacular event. And to make sure he remembers them all, he always takes home a souvenir.

"I've enjoyed myself by making sure that I take a piece of the show with me," the "Anchorman" star revealed. "Like a memory. Or, literally, someone's wallet."

"A chair?" McBride suggested.

"Yes," Ferrell replied, considering his options. "A chair, maybe."

Zac Efron Takes On The Action Stars For Best Male Performance

If you wanted to be nominated for Best Male Performance at this year's MTV Movie Awards, it was all about embracing your inner action hero — unless you're Zac Efron.

With four of the men — Christian Bale ("The Dark Knight"), Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man"), Shia LaBeouf ("Eagle Eye") and Vin Diesel ( "Fast & Furious") — nominated for action flicks, Efron stands alone, thanks to reprising his role as Troy Bolton in "High School Musical 3: Senior Year."

With Efron as the song-and-dance man in a sea of testosterone-fueled dudes, it looks like it could be an epic battle that only the most genius comic book writer could come up with: Iron Man vs. Batman. Downey and Bale managed to have blockbuster summers last year with "Iron Man" and "The Dark Knight," so it's just a matter of who the fanboys vote for. And don't count out Diesel in this category: "Fast & Furious" was a huge movie as well and could possibly spoil it for the superheroes.

LaBeouf might have had an "Eagle Eye" in his nominated role, but it will still be hard for him to best Efron and his rabid tween fanbase. Efron told us he loved dancing in "HSM 3," since it allowed him to live out a childhood dream.

"When we got to the junkyard, everything just opened up for us," he explained about his "The Boys Are Back" dance sequence. "We had all these props and cars. It was like a dream come true. I've wanted to do that since I was, like, 5."

Pitbull On Punching Disruptive Fan: 'Natural Instinct Kicked In'

When making it rain goes wrong, Pitbull reacts. Amateur video of Pit onstage in Colorado recently hit the Net, showing the rapper punching out a fan. The scene starts with Pit entertaining the audience, when a man in the crowd started throwing money on the stage. Pit pulled the man onto the stage and he started throwing money in Pit's face, and Pitbull immediately knocked the guy down with a punch to the face.

"They don't show the whole clip of what happened," Pit told us Wednesday (May 27) of the video. "Before the song 'Bojangles,' I play a whole set and I only get three breaks. I was going into 'Bojangles' and this mutha----a had already made it rain, like, three times. He threw a gang of money in the air and I was scooting the money, giving it to the crowd. I didn't touch the money, but I was scooting it, giving it to the crowd."

Pit said he had enough and gave the guy a verbal warning from the stage.

"I told him, 'Look, dog, you already got three strikes. Don't make it rain no more. I'm telling you. I ain't gonna talk about it no more, I'm just gonna be about it. Don't do it no more,' " he recalled. "Boom, left it alone. I started 'Bojangles,' then about a minute later, he comes to the other side of the stage and throws money again."

From there, Pit actually extended his hand and pulled the man onstage.

"I'm bringing him onstage with no intention of doing nothing to him," he explained. "I'm bringing him onstage to say, 'Look, this the clown that's gonna f--- up your show. I'm getting rid of him. I'm letting y'all know right now. Don't nobody else make it rain.' When I bring the mutha----a up on the stage, he throws a wad of money in my face. When he did that, that's when natural reaction ... natural instinct kicked in."

Pit laid the guy out with one punch.

"No way, shape or form was that my intention. It was more like a reaction, self-defense," he explained. "Mind you, I've been in shows before and I done got hit with a bottle. Any time I see anything moving onstage, I'm cautious about it. You feel me? As soon as he threw that money, it was on from there."

The man was escorted out and the concert continued after Pit apologized to the crowd for the disturbance.

"That was the beginning of the show — five or eight minutes into the show," he said. "I have a hour-and-15-minute set. ... He made me feel [wild] like I felt back in the day. I'm in a profession now. I'm here to entertain. ... I heard he was a fan and he drove from a long way. When I saw the video, I said, 'Hell nah. He knew exactly what he was doing.' In any country when you throw something in somebody's face, it's disrespectful. When I looked at the tape, you could see he did that and was waiting like, 'What now? Yeah mutha----a, I just threw a wad in your face.' "

Fortunately for Pit's fans, the incident hasn't slowed him down — he has a slew of summer radio shows lined up for the next three months.

Pitbull's next album Rebelution is slated to drop later summer or early fall. The Miami MC just released the mixtape Sh---in' on the Industry.

Eminem's Relapse Notches Biggest Billboard Debut Of 2009

New albums from Method Man and Redman, Busta Rhymes and Dane Cook also make top 10.

Guess who's back? As if there were any question of whether Eminem could dominate the charts again after a near four-year absence, the rapper's return-to-form, Relapse, will crush the competition next week to take the #1 spot on the Billboard 200, thanks to the highest first-week bow of the year so far at 608,000.

How big was it? Even with seven other albums making their debuts in the top 10, Slim Shady sold nearly as many albums as the rest of the top 10 combined. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, last week's #1, Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown, dropped down a spot on sales of 166,000. Breakdown, the "Hannah Montana" soundtrack (#7, 58,000) and Lady Gaga's Fame (#8, 45,000) are the only holdovers from last week.

Among the new entries at the top: Kenny Chesney's Greatest Hits II (#3, 89,000), comedian Dane Cook's Isolated Incident (#4, 61,000), Busta Rhymes' Back On My B.S. (#5, 59,000), Method Man and Redman's Blackout 2 (#7, 57,000), Tori Amos' Abnormally Attracted to Sin (#9, 41,000) and Kate Voegele's A Fine Mess (#10, 37,000).

There was also plenty of debut action just outside the top 10, including a #13 bow for singer/songwriter Mat Kearney with City of Black & White (26,000). Live at Madison Square Garden from the dynamic classic-rock duo of Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton comes in just behind that with 23,000 in sales, and '80s star Lionel Richie seems to have enjoyed an "American Idol" bump that helped his new album, Just Go, land at #24 (19,000).

Speaking of "Idol," runner-up Adam Lambert might have come in second, but he will still manage to break into the charts at #33 with his 12-song Season 8 Favorite Performances iTunes EP (16,000), which includes his covers of "Mad World," "A Change Is Gonna Come," "Whole Lotta Love" and "The Tracks of My Tears." Meanwhile, winner Kris Allen's iTunes EP is a bit further behind at #50 (10,000), with his versions of "Falling Slowly," "Heartless," "What's Going On" and "All She Wants to Do Is Dance."

A second appearance on "Idol" this season also helped last year's winner, David Cook, whose self-titled debut jumps up nearly 30 spots (and more than 110 percent) to #29 on sales of 17,000, while season-two champ Ruben Studdard had a so-so debut for his new one, Love Is (#36, 15,000). The "Idol" bump didn't do wonders for creaky classic popster Rod Stewart, whose appearance on Wednesday night's finale was only good for a #52 debut for the Definitive Rod Stewart collection (10,000), or for comedian Steve Martin, whose debut music album, the bluegrass collection Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, snuck in at #105 on sales of nearly 5,000 after an appearance on the "Idol" finale.

Ciara's Fantasy Ride is turning into a bit of a spin-out, as her latest drops 24 spots in its third week on the charts, shedding another 40 percent of business from the week before to land at #34 (16,000). The news is no better for rapper Cam'ron, whose Crime Pays plummets 64 percent in its second week, falling from #3 to #35 (15,000).

The charts shouldn't get too much of a shake-up next week: The biggest names on the horizon include long-in-the-tooth shock-rocker Marilyn Manson's latest, as well as albums from Mandy Moore and reggaeton superstars Wisin y Yandel.

Mike Tyson Was Focused On Keeping His Life Together In April Interview

Posted: 27 May 2009 03:39 AM PDT

MTV Movies Editor Josh Horowitz recalls a sometimes devastating chat with the complicated public figure, before his daughter's death.
By Josh Horowitz

Mike Tyson speaks to MTV News in April
Photo: MTV News

No one would have called it a storybook ending, but a month ago, at the very least, it seemed like Mike Tyson's bizarre life had taken a turn in the right direction. After years of talk dominated by rape and tattoos and biting and addictions, the rhetoric was actually positive. He was almost becoming beloved.

Had Mike Tyson finally found peace? It wasn't to be.

On Tuesday, after the sudden and seemingly random death of his 4-year-old daughter Exodus, the life of one of the most complicated public figures of the last century just got that much more complicated — and tragic.

I first interviewed Mike Tyson briefly in January. His eponymous documentary had just screened at the Sundance Film Festival, and he was sandwiched into a tuxedo totally incongruous with everything I knew about him. The film had been buzzed about since a glorious Cannes debut last summer. Directed by James Toback, "Tyson" revealed that, yes, there was more to one of the most documented and divisive sports figures of all time than just the scandals. Here was an introspective man in his 40s, willing to own up to most, if not all, of his sins. It was all right there on the big screen. And critics and audiences were loving him for it.

When Tyson walked into a hotel room for our interview last month in New York, he was as revealing and real as the man I'd seen depicted on the screen. What was supposed to be a 10-minute interview turned into a 30-minute dissection of a life in transition but very much on the upswing. He confided that he was afraid of the love he was receiving. He worried it would lead him to the temptations he had so often been unable to ignore — sex, drugs and an overall megalomania, as he put it. "I can't afford to slip," he said. "I probably don't have another line of cocaine in me. I don't got another shot of Hennessy in me. I don't have another case of sex addiction in me."

It was rough, soul-searching, even devastating stuff. But it was also kind of beautiful, because behind it all was a true hope that he wouldn't fail his family. You got the sense talking to Tyson that his priorities had truly changed — that it wasn't only about him anymore and his problems alone — that there was a true recognition and sadness over the pain he'd caused others.

"I look forward to having some grandkids one day. And I'm really trying to work into re-creating my relationship, rebuilding my relationship with my children," he said. "[In the past, I was so wrapped up in being] this Mike Tyson, 'Iron Mike,' heavyweight champion of the world or whatever I was, that I neglected my children and people I was in love with at one time, and I'm bearing the brunt of it right now. At this stage in my life, I'm starting to feel the pain and the effects from it, and I would like to rekindle that relationship."

I asked him if he could reconcile the empathy that was suddenly coming his way, and he again dismissed it, "I would give all that up if it caused me losing what I have now: that little condo with my girlfriend and my daughter and having a relationship with the rest of my kids."

Tyson and his family are mourning their collective tragedy, and for those of us who've spent decades wondering about Iron Mike, we're left shaking our heads in sadness yet again. And the question that's followed him for far too long returns again: "What next?"
